In the face of the recent economic crisis, many Europeans and Americans are contemplating whether they should perpetuate their current lifestyle or consider living closer to nature and to find a refuge in which one can live well and as independently as possible in the case of a future economic crisis. Costa Rica still offers regions where one can afford property with the possibility of reaching self-sufficiency for relatively little money. As part of our real estate series, we introduce the South Pacific region this time. There is a wide variety of land available, large fincas, islands and beautiful properties with ocean views. Perhaps that arouses the escape artist in you! Coffee and Costa Rica naturally belong together. That you cannot only drink coffee, but also use it to develop photographs, is exhibited by the artist Saul Bolaños, who for 20 years, has been perfecting his technique. We visited him in his „Museo Costarricense Café Arte“ near Cartago and introduce you to his fascinating work. Recently, we were asked if we could provide specific information for residents in Costa Rica. Bearing in mind that there are tourists considering permanent migration, we decided this topic would be equally interesting for both kinds of readers and would illustrate what daily life looks like in this country. Therefore, beginning in this issue, we have the new section "Inside Costa Rica" with current and useful tips and details about life in Costa Rica for residents and those who might want to be. Costa Rica always offers new leisure activities that locals and tourists can enjoy outdoors. We have discovered the new sport, Stand Up Paddle, on Lake Arenal and are very excited to present it in this issue. Let us continue to surprise you!

die Erfahrungen mit der Wirtschaftskrise lassen viele Europäer und Amerikaner darüber nachdenken, ob sie so wie bisher weiterleben sollen. Mancher überlegt, näher an der Natur zu leben und sich ein Refugium zu verschaffen, in dem sich auch in einer zukünftigen Wirtschaftskrise gut und möglichst unabhängig leben lässt. Costa Rica bietet noch solche Regionen, wo man sich für relativ wenig Geld eine Finca mit der Möglichkeit zur weitgehenden Selbstversorgung leisten kann. Wir stellen Ihnen dieses Mal in unserer Immobilienreihe die Region Südpazifik vor. Hier gibt es von großen Fincas für Aussteiger bis hin zu schönen Grundstücken mit Meerblick eine große Vielfalt an Angeboten. Vielleicht weckt das auch bei Ihnen den Traum vom Aussteigerleben. Kaffee und Costa Rica gehören zweifelsohne zusammen. Doch dass man Kaffee nicht nur trinken kann, sondern ihn auch zum Entwickeln von Fotographien verwenden kann, zeigt der Künstler Saul Bolaños, der sich damit seit mehr als 20 Jahren beschäftigt. Wir haben ihn in seinem „Museo Costarricense Café Arte“ in der Nähe von Cartago besucht und stellen Ihnen seine faszinierende Arbeit vor. Häufig wurden wir in letzter Zeit gefragt, ob wir nicht auch spezielle Informationen für Residenten in Costa Rica bringen könnten. Wir haben uns nun überlegt, dass es ja auch unter den Touristen einige gibt, die sich mit dem Gedanken des Auswanderns tragen. Für sie dürfte es deshalb ebenso interessant sein zu erfahren, wie der Alltag in diesem Land aussieht. Darum haben wir ab dieser Ausgabe eine neue Rubrik „Inside Costa Rica“, mit aktuellen Tipps und Informationen zum Leben in Costa Rica für Residenten und solche, die es vielleicht werden wollen. In Costa Rica werden immer wieder neue Freizeitaktivitäten angeboten, mit denen sich Einheimische und Touristen in der Natur vergnügen können. Medical Tourism Becoming Increasingly Important Medizin-Tourismus immer bedeutender

The high cost of health care in their home countries motivates more tourists to be medically treated in Costa Rica each year with the added benefit of the opportunity to relax afterward in beautiful surroundings. The price differences can be remarkable. According to the agency Promed, a new knee in the United States costs about $ 50 000, while this surgery at a comparable medical standard in Costa Rica is approximately $ 12 500. And, a dental implant is between $ 2 000 and $ 10 000 in the US, while in Costa Rica $ 1 000 would be charged. In 2010, more than 36 000 medical tourists visited Costa Rica. The largest group among them received dental treatment (36%). This brought in $ 288 million in revenue to Costa Rica's economy - more than the exporting of coffee thereby creating an estimated 20 000 jobs. While a average tourist spends $ 1 600 during his stay, a medical tourist spends considerably more, about $ 7 000. A further increase in the number of these tourists is expected this year.CRS

lar, während diese Behandlung bei vergleichbarem medizinischem Standard in Costa Rica bereits für ca. 12 500 Dollar zu bekommen ist. Für ein Zahnimplantat werden im großen Nachbarland zwischen 2 000 und 10 000 Dollar fällig, während in Costa Rica 1 000 Dollar ausreichen. 2010 kamen mehr als 36 000 Medizintouristen nach Costa Rica, die größte Gruppe unter ihnen ließ Zahnbehandlungen durchführen (36%). Costa Ricas Wirtschaft brachte dies Einnahmen von 288 Millionen Dollar, mehr als der Export von Kaffee. Geschätzte 20 000 Arbeitsplätze sind inzwischen dadurch entstanden. Während ein normaler Tourist 1 600 Dollar während seines Aufenthalts ausgibt, sind dies bei einem Medizintouristen erheblich mehr, nämlich 7 000 Dollar. Costa Rica Top in Press Freedom

According to a survey completed by the private foundation The Freedom House, Costa Rica enjoys the top position in Latin America at number 1 and ranks 24th worldwide regarding press freedom. The study examined 23 areas and 109 indicators before it came to this conclusion. In Latin America, 23 countries have free press and fourteen countries were assessed as having "partially independent press". Ranking last was Cuba, which has no independent press.CRS

Ostional is one of four places in the world that hosts the amazing massive arrival of tens of thousands nesting Olive Ridley turtles. This phenomenon is called “arribada”. The event normally endures three days, but between September and December it could last up to nine days. It is estimated that the next arribadas will take place in the last week of July, on 20 August, on 20 September, in the first and the last week of November and on 20 December. In October, no arribada is expected. But solitary turtles can always been observed between the arribadas, too. CRS

Doch wenn der Künstler Saul Bolaños Kaffee kocht, dann hat er anderes im Sinn: Er will Fotos mit Kaffee als Ersatz für die übliche Entwicklerflüssigkeit herstellen. Dazu wird Kaffee mit ein paar Zutaten gemischt, dann können Fotos in der typisch braunen Kaffeefarbe entwickelt werden. Nicht nur auf Papier lässt sich diese Technik anwenden, auch auf Tassen und Wandtellern hat Bolaños seine

He produces photos using coffee mixed with a few ingredients as a substitute for conventional photo developer. Since 1988, he has refined the technique of photo processing again and again. Saul’s idea is not only used on paper but, can be applied to create other art as well and to decorate coffee mugs, wall plates and textiles. A long-awaited dream has now come true. Lake Arenal is located in a picturesque setting between hills and the Arenal Volcano. From the crater, smoke rises into the sky. At a distance, one might get the impression that there are people walking on the surface of the water but, a closer look reveals a group of water enthusiasts are actually paddling while standing on surf-type boards on the lake. New to Costa Rica, Stand Up Paddle or SUP has become increasingly popular. There are different opinions about the origin of the sport. Many people argue that Polynesian fisherman were the first to stand on their boats off the coast of Tahiti and this idea was developed further and then just caught on. Alternating strokes from one side to the other, a long paddle pierces the water and then the board glides silently onward. Über die Herkunft gibt es unterschiedliche Meinungen, viele sagen, polynesische Fischer hätten sich als erste vor Tahiti stehend in ihren Booten bewegt, und diese Idee sei dann weiterentwickelt worden. Tenorio National Park Hike and B athe in Parad ise Bathe Tenorio Nationalpark Zeit für ein blaues Wunder We climb more than a hundred steps and it is worth it! An impressive waterfall plunges into the depths from here. Enjoying the view, we take a deserved little breather before we head back to the Río Celeste (Sky Blue River) to look for the promised blue color. Sulfur odor wafts over us at one point, where hot vapors rise from the bubbling river. The water so far is transparent, not blue. Excited, we walk on. According to the map that we received at the park entrance, we would soon discover a blue lagoon. We follow the route in anticipation and shortly our expectation is met. The river water is such a surreal blue that it almost looks brushed by a painter but, actually it is just pure nature. Of course, we are interested in finding out why so we follow the path further up the river to a point where the Río Celeste is crossed by a suspension bridge. Along the way, there are smaller streams and a few trees have fallen down. We reach the point where the blue originates. In fact, it swells from underground so thick as if from a paint bucket that has been knocked over. Dissolved min-

eral salts in high concentrations give the river that particular color. There is a sign explicitly warning that swimming in the river is not recommended because of the unknown effects of minerals on the body. Another sign points toward the hot springs, one hundred meters away. Hikers rest there. Now we go down the river on the other side, ever making our way through dense forest. The river is rushing away here, gradually losing its blue color — apparently the mineral salts also. Separated from the cold river water by large stones, distinct streams offer different temperatures from very hot to pleasantly warm. In the middle of the jungle, we are totally relaxed in this natural bathtub. Birds sing, the river swishes by and we let the warm water wash over us. We never want to leave! CRS Useful information

The Tenorio National Park is open daily from 8 am to 4 pm and admission is $ 10. Due to its remoteness, the Tenorio National Park is rarely overcrowded, except during the Christmas and Easter holidays. A round-trip hike takes about four hours including stopping to bathe. The summit of the Tenorio Volcano is too far away and not accessible to tourists but, the half-day tour is already a splendid morning excursion. In the afternoon, the park is often shrouded in clouds and it rains frequently, leaving the unpaved paths very muddy. The park can be reached by turning off the Interamerican Highway North at the junction to Bijagua and then going ahead on a bad, but scenic, dirt road. On this road, there are basic accommodations right before the entrance to the National Park. The rate per person lies under $ 30 for overnight stay with half board. Ein derart unwirkliches Blau, dass es schon fast wie von einem naiven Maler gezeichnet aussieht. Aber das Wasser vor uns ist alles reinste Natur: Der rechte Fluss strömt glasklar durch den grünen Regenwald und der andere Fluss fließt von links im schönsten himmelblauen Wasser. Uns interessiert natürlich wo das herkommt. So gehen wir den Weg noch weiter flussaufwärts, bis der Río Celeste an einer Hängebrücke überquert wird. Es folgen noch ein paar quer gelegte Baumstämme über kleinere Bächlein, bis wir zu der Stelle kommen, wo das Blau seinen Ursprung hat. Tatsächlich quillt hier aus dem Untergrund ein dickes Blau wie aus einem Farbeimer, der versehent-

Gespannt wandern wir weiter, schließlich heißt der Fluss ja „Río Celeste“, himmelblauer Fluss. Laut Kartenskizze, die wir am Parkeingang erhalten haben, müssten wir in Kürze eine blaue Lagune entdecken. Wir folgen dem Weg in

Porres Esquivel war Mitglied einer bekannten Architektenfamilie aus der Kolonialzeit in Guatemala. Die Baute weist daher auch Elemente aus dem alten Guatemala aus, wie Breitwände mit geringer Höhe. Die Kathedrale zeichnet sich zudem durch schlichte Dekoration verbunden mit viel natürlichem Licht aus. Das Gewölbe ist vorherrschend und das räumliche Konzept ist barock. Die Ausgestaltung deutet die Anfangszeit des Neoklassizismus an. Die Kathedrale gilt als das wichtigste historische Gebäude in Nicaragua.

Die UNESCO führte 1994 die Liste der UNESCO-Welterbestätten ein. Ziel ist es, dass Teile des Kultur- oder Naturerbes von außergewöhnlicher Bedeutung als Bestandteil des Welterbes der ganzen Menschheit erhalten werden müssen. OMETEPE

An island with two mountains.... The popular children’s song really seems to have been composed here. “Ometepe”, in the language of the natives, Náhuatl, means “two mountains”. Even from the distant banks of Lake Nicaragua, one sees two shapely volcanoes aiming high out of the water. Concepción, the larger of the two, is a perfect cone and a surreal phenomenon jutting into the sky. The upper part is absolutely without vegetation and its view promises the struggle of an ascent. Altogether, one needs twelve hours to climb up the 1610 meter height and then back down. The peak is often veiled with a fine white cloud that, from a distance, looks like a snowcap. But, the temperatures are certainly far from freezing. A constant cooling wind makes the temperatures bearable while climbing and the occasional clouds are also welcome. For all the effort, one is rewarded with a beautiful view. A guide is required for the climb. In contrast, the Madera Volcano, the little neighbor standing 1394 meters high, is covered with dense forest. Reaching the peak, the hiker is offered a deep vista into the cold water lagoon that is the subject of many Information

Schon von weitem sieht man vom Ufer des Nicaraguasees zwei formschöne Vulkane aus dem Wasser emporstreben. Der Concepción, der größere von beiden, ist ein perfekter Kegel und ragt wie eine unwirkliche Erscheinung in den Himmel. Der obere Teil ist absolut vegetationslos und lässt schon die

Mühen einer Besteigung erahnen. Insgesamt zwölf Stunden braucht man für die Tour zum Krater auf 1610 Meter Höhe und wieder zurück. Oft ist die Spitze in eine feine weiße Wolke gehüllt, die aus der Ferne wie eine Schneekappe aussieht. Doch die Temperaturen sind natürlich weit vom Gefrierpunkt entfernt. Ein steter kühlender Wind macht die Temperaturen beim Aufstieg erträglich, und auch die gelegentliche Bewölkung ist willkommen. Doch dafür wird man mit einem schönen Ausblick belohnt. Für die Tour ist ein Führer Pflicht. Der Madera-Vulkan, mit 1394 Metern Höhe der kleine Nachbar, ist dagegen mit dichtem Wald bedeckt. Am Gipfel angelangt wird dem Wanderer ein tiefer Blick in die kalte Kraterlagune geboten, um die sich viele Legenden ranken. Auch diese Besteigung ist mit acht Stunden eine anspruchsvolle Tour. Doch Ometepe bietet auch eine Vielzahl weniger anstrengender Touren. Rund um den Vulkan Madera zeugen zahlreiche Steinzeichnungen (Petroglyphs) von einer frühen Besiedlung der Insel. Im Süden stürzt der Wasserfall von San Ramón mitten im Wald über 50 Meter von einer steilen Klippe in die Tiefe. Eine Paddel-

In Europe and USA the idea has been popular for several years: Whoever doesn’t want to absorb the full cost of his own car yet, would like to drive on occasion, for a few hours here and there can become a car-sharing club member. Usually, a one-time membership fee is paid and then cars which are billed by the hour can be rented at various locations. In Costa Rica, the company Sigo Car now offers such a carsharing model for an annual fee of $ 75. Currently, Nissan cars are available at seven locations in and around San José (one of them being at the airport Juan Santa Maria). The hour costs between $ 4.75 and $ 9.50, depending on the time of the day. The rental over night (from 6pm to 8am) costs $ 26. Er zahlt dann meistens eine einmalige Mitgliedsgebühr und kann sich dann an verschiedenen Standorten Autos mieten, die nach Stunden abgerechnet werden. In Costa Rica bietet nun die Firma SigoCar ein solches Car-Sharing Modell an. Für einen Jahresbeitrag von 75 Dollar kann jeder Mitglied werden. An derzeit sieben Standorten in und um San José, einem davon am Flughafen Juan Santamaria, stehen Nissan-Pkw zur Verfügung. Die Stunde kostet zwischen 4,75 und 9,50 Dollar, abhängig von der Tageszeit. Eine Anmietung über Nacht (ab 18h bis 8h ) ist für 26 Dollar möglich. Beginning in November, the airline Air Berlin will be offering a new route from Dusseldorf to Costa Rica. Every 14 days, it will fly through Cancun to Liberia in Guanacaste. Shuttle flights are currently available from Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Vienna and Zurich. On June 27, a so-called "discount rate" of 1115 Euros was offered for a departure date of December 10th, 2011, returning December 24th, 2011.

concept, two passengers sit opposite two others as in a train compartment and the four seats can be transformed into bunk beds for sleeping. Other concepts are also being tested in order to allow passengers in economy class a more restful sleep during the flight.
