La forma lobulada de los dos volúmenes, resultado de un progresivo refinamiento del diseño a través de maquetas, permite bañar la planta baja de luz natural y dirige la vista desde el parque hacia la bahía.

The two-lobed form, which is the outcome of a gradual refinement of the design through the use of models, ensures natural light in the ground floor and directs the gaze of visitors from the park to the water.

El Centro Botín se ha concebido no sólo como un edificio de referencia sino como una operación urbanística capaz de abrir al Cantábrico una zona de la ciudad que tradicionalmente le había dado la espalda. Con este fin, la construcción del edificio implicó también el soterramiento del tráfico rodado que separaba los Jardines de Pereda del frente marítimo, de manera que pudieran duplicar su superficie, extendiéndose hasta el mar y haciéndolo accesible a los ciudadanos.

Situado entre el parque y el mar, el edificio se apoya, por un lado, en los terrenos de la vieja dársena, pero por el otro queda suspendido sobre el agua, sostenido en pilotes, como si fuera un palafito.

Este modo de relacionarse con el borde marítimo, y el hecho de que el edificio quede en parte oculto por la vegetación de los Jardines de Pereda, evitan la obstrucción de las vistas sobre el mar y el bello paisaje de la bahía. La sensación de ligereza se refuerza con una serie de pasarelas de acero y vidrio que conectan entre sí los dos cuerpos redondeados que conforman el edificio, al tiempo que crean un nuevo espacio público levantado del suelo.

Estos dos cuerpos o lóbulos están diseñados para mejorar la iluminación de la planta, permitiendo y a la vez enmarcando las vistas de la bahía desde los Jardines. La superficie de los dos lóbulos está revestida con 280.000 pequeñas escamas cerámicas, ligeramente redondeadas y de tono nacarado, que rielan con la luz del sol, reflejando la superficie del agua y la atmósfera de Santander.

The Botín Centre, a space for art, culture, and education projecting into the Bay of Santander, restores the ties between the historical part of the city and the sea. The freeway separating the park from the sea has now been rung underground through a tunnel, making it possible to double the area of the Jardines de Pereda, extending them to the seafront and restoring pedestrian access to the sea for Santander’s citizens.

Hemmed in between the park and the sea, and on the axis of the public market, the new Botín Centre is half based on the land and the other half suspended over the water on stilts. This avoids obstructing the view of the sea and the beautiful bay landscape for people strolling in the park, as the Botín Centre is cleverly masked by the foliage of trees. A series of light walkways of steel and glass separate the two rounded volumes of the building and create a new square set above grade and fully public.

The two-lobed form of the building provides better illumination of the ground floor and accompanies the view of visitors and citizens looking out from the park to the sea. The two bodies that make up the building are completely faced with 280,000 small, slightly rounded ceramic tiles, pearl-colored and vibrant, that reflect the sunlight, the sparkle of the water, and the rarefied atmosphere of Santander.

Functioning as a hybrid between a facade and a roof and serving to give continuity to the complex, the envelope adopts the form of a checkered slope where balconies and glass surfaces alternate.

De los dos lóbulos que conforman el edificio, el este alberga un auditorio que se levanta en voladizo sobre el mar, así como un centro educativo orientado al norte, ambos concebidos para adaptarse con flexibilidad a usos diversos. Por su parte, el cuerpo oeste cobija las salas de exposiciones —caracterizadas por un gran ventanal que se abre a las vistas sobre el entorno— y se completa con una cubierta de vidrio que está formada por cuatro capas que protegen de la radiación directa y permiten regular con flexibilidad la entrada de luz cenital.

A los anteriores volúmenes se añade un anfiteatro excavado en el entorno del edificio. El programa se completa con un espacio acristalado que se sitúa en la planta baja, y que acoge un café, un restaurante, una zona comercial y un punto de información. El conjunto así formado crea la sensación de que el espacio interior y el exterior son casi indistinguibles, y hace posible que los visitantes y ciudadanos pueden disfrutar de un nuevo panorama del paisaje marítimo de la ciudad.

cantilevered over the sea, and to the north, the educational facilities: spaces designed with the maximum flexibility to adapt to multiple activities. In the west volume the exhibition galleries unfold on two levels, characterized by a spectacular double view over the sea and the park. The exhibition space on the upper floor is illuminated zenithally by glass roofing consisting of four layers which protects against stray light and can be used to make the lighting flexible.

An amphitheater hewn out of the park runs alongside the Botín Centre, its west facade equipped with a LED display for screenings and outdoor cinema. On the ground floor a fully transparent façade encloses a multifunctional space animated by a café, restaurant, commercial space and the information point. In this way, the inner and outer space are almost indistinguishable and visitors and citizens can see the sea and landscape of the bay framed by the broad eaves of the building.

En la serie ‘Restricted areas’, Danila Tkachenko (Moscú, 1989) muestra una inquietud arqueológica al examinar los vestigios del progreso tecnológico que un día definió el interés nacional soviético.

Danila Tkachenko (Moscow, 1989) shows an almost archaeological concern in his ‘Restricted Areas’ series, examining the utopian quest for technological progress that was once of national interest for the USSR.

Su temática y la aproximación objetiva al sujeto enmarcan el trabajo Tkachenko en el campo de la fotografía documental. En su todavía corta trayectoria, el joven ruso ha recibido ya importantes premios: si su serie ‘Escape’ fue premiada en el World Press Photo de 2014, en 2015 ganó el European Publishers Award for Photography gracias a ‘Restricted Areas’, donde recorre escenarios en los que la búsqueda del progreso tecnológico quedó paralizada en el tiempo por desastres nucleares, crisis económicas, catástrofes naturales, etc., convirtiéndose en lugares abandonados y desiertos, testigos de una utopía tecnocrática que nunca llegó.

The thematic and objective approach to the subjects of the images of Tkachenko frame his work in the field of documentary photography. In his still brief career, the young Russian has already received several awards, including the European Publishers Award for Photography in 2015 thanks to his series ‘Restricted Areas,’ where he travels through almost artificial environments where the pursuit of technological progress has been frustrated and halted in time by multiple causes – nuclear wars, economic crises, natural disasters, etc. – turning them into abandoned and deserted places, witnesses of a technocratic utopia that never arrived.

A Glass Pavilion Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid

La Norman Foster Foundation encuentra su sede en un palacete histórico, obra de Joaquín Saldaña, situado en el madrileño barrio de Chamberí. El patio alberga un nuevo pabellón donde se expone una serie de objetos e imágenes que a lo largo de los años han sido referencias personales para Foster.

El nuevo edificio resuelve la geometría irregular del patio con un tejado en forma de ala de avión sostenido por una estructura de acero en voladizo, oculta sobre una fachada de paneles de vidrio sin medios visibles de apoyo, de modo que el tejado parece flotar sobre ella. El resultado es una arquitectura que busca las cualidades efímeras de la luz, la ligereza y los reflejos. Los elementos se reducen al mínimo con un techo y alero de espejo, lo cual disuelve aún más el volumen del espacio para resaltar su contenido.

Una escultura creada por la artista española Cristina Iglesias proyecta sombra sobre el patio y la fachada de entrada al pabellón.

Dicha pieza, La Ionosfera (Un lugar de tormentas silenciosas), está compuesta de paneles ligeros entrelazados de fibra de carbono con patrones inspirados en Las fuentes del paraíso, un texto de Arthur C. Clarke, y enmarca las vistas del patio desde el pabellón, además de bañarlo en una sombra veteada.

Con su uso innovador pero sutil del vidrio, el acero y los materiales compuestos, el pabellón sigue explorando técnicas en las cuales Norman Foster ha sido pionero durante más de cinco décadas. Junto

In a central area of Madrid, the Norman Foster Foundation is housed in a heritage listed residential palace by Joaquín Saldaña.

Its courtyard is the setting for a new pavilion which will show a changing display of objects and images that have, over the years, been personal references for Foster.

The new building resolves the irregular geometry of the outdoor area with a roof shaped like the wing of an aircraft. This is supported by a hidden steel structure cantilevered over a structural glass facade without any visible means of support so the roof seems to float over it. The result is an architecture which seeks the ephemeral qualities of light, lightness and reflections. Elements are reduced to an essential minimum with a mirrored ceiling and fascia which further dissolves the volume of space to emphasize its contents.

The courtyard and entrance facade of the pavilion is shaded by a canopy created by the Spanish artist Cristina Iglesias. This work, The Ionosphere (A Place of Silent Storms), is composed of interlocking light carbon fiber panels with patterns generated from a text of Arthur C. Clarke’s The Fountains of Paradise. It frames the view of the court from the pavilion as well as bathing it in dappled shade.

From its innovative but subtle use of glass, steel and composite materials, the pavilion is a further exploration of techniques that Norman Foster has pioneered over more than five decades. The wide glass panel to the courtyard next to the entrance is itself a massive

door, weighing 2.7 tons and 6 meters long. When this portal is opened up the interior and exterior worlds are united into one flowing space for Foundation gatherings.

By working closely with the craftsmen in metal and glass it has been possible to develop a combination of slim bead-blasted stainless steel sections welded together and with mirror polished edges which dematerialize the bulk of supporting structures. The contents of the pavilion are an eclectic selection of objects, models, photography and sculpture from the worlds of art, architecture and design, embracing aircraft, cars and locomotives. For Norman Foster these are not separate worlds but interconnected with a special emphasis on his passion for flight.

An important and historic car is displayed for the first time.

This is not a replica – it is the newly restored and original 1927 Avions Voisin C7 that was owned by Le Corbusier and featured in photographs of all his early works. The car was very advanced in

its time using aviation technology pioneered by Voisin for his flying machines. Because of its large expanse of glass, echoed in the new architecture of its age, it was called the Lumineuse. Gabriel Voisin was also a patron of Le Corbusier who named his radical proposal for Paris The Voisin Plan.

The pavilion was realized through detail design and construction in six months. This was made possible by prefabricating all the elements which also avoided excavation on the site and disruption to neighbors. The high thermal performance of the glass building envelope, radiant heating and cooling through the floor, generous external shading and the latest generation of LED lighting are all part of its sustainable agenda.

Local skills and materials have been important – for example eleven of the twelve consultants are from Spain and six of the nine contractors and suppliers are Spanish – the remainder from Italy, Germany, and Japan.

Trabajando directamente con artesanos del metal y del vidrio, ha sido posible desarrollar una combinación de esbeltas secciones de acero inoxidable granallado con bordes de espejo pulido que desmaterializan el volumen de las estructuras de soporte.

El detallado diseño y la construcción del pabellón se ha llevado a cabo en seis meses. Esto ha sido posible prefabricando todos los elementos. El alto rendimiento térmico de la envoltura de vidrio del edificio, el sistema de climatización por suelo radiante, la generosa sombra exterior y la iluminación LED de última generación forman parte de su concepción sostenible.

El contenido del pabellón es una ecléctica selección de objetos, maquetas, fotografías y esculturas de los ámbitos del arte, la arquitectura y el diseño que incluye aviones, coches y locomotoras. Para Norman Foster no son mundos independientes, sino interconectados, poniendo especial énfasis en su pasión por la aeronáutica.

Se expone por primera vez el Avions Voisin C7 de 1927 restaurado, que fue propiedad de Le Corbusier y aparecía en las fotografías de todas sus primeras obras. Este vehículo histórico utilizaba tecnología aeronáutica ideada por Voisin para sus máquinas voladoras resultando muy avanzado a su tiempo. Debido a su abundante uso del vidrio, que recuerda a la nueva arquitectura de su época, era conocido como el Lumineuse. Gabriel Voisin también fue mecenas de Le Corbusier, que bautizó su radical propuesta para París como el Plan Voisin.

En la ejecución del proyecto han sido fundamentales los conocimientos, habilidades y materiales locales; once de los doce asesores y seis de los nueve contratistas y proveedores son españoles, el resto de Italia, Alemania y Japón.

Tras estudiar hostelería y trabajar en los fogones de Ferran Adrià en El Bulli, Andoni Luis Aduriz comienza su desarrollo en solitario con el proyecto de Mugaritz, que abre en 1998 y desde 2006 cuenta con dos estrellas Michelin. Mugaritz se ubica en un paraje natural formidable, que no sólo ofrece un lienzo sobre el que crear, sino también un espacio rodeado de tradición y producto local.

El inagotable éxito de Mugaritz (lleva más de una década en el top 10 mundial según la lista The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards) anima al chef a abrir TOPA Sukaldería. En contraposición con su restaurante insignia, éste se ubica en pleno barrio de Gros, en San Sebastián.

De esta manera acerca al casco histórico la rigurosa investigación gastronómica de Mugaritz, en un ambiente más informal y urbano.

Para su diseño ha apostado por las superficies del grupo Cosentino, incluyendo planchas de Dekton o la serie Eco Line de Silestone, en línea con muchos otros productos reciclados que se pueden ver en el local.

Upon completing culinary studies and working with Ferran Adrià at El Bulli, Andoni Luis Aduriz embarked on his solo career with the Mugaritz project. Launched in 1998, since 2006 the restaurant has two Michelin stars to its name. Mugaritz is located in a unique natural setting that offers a blank canvas for creation, in a space surrounded by tradition and local produce.

The success of Mugaritz (it has made the top 10 of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards list for over ten years now) encouraged the chef to open a new place, TOPA Sukaldería, this time in the very heart of the Gros quarter in San Sebastián. In this way Aduriz brings the rigorous culinary research of Mugaritz to the historic center, in a more casual and urban atmosphere.

The design project features surfaces manufactured by Cosentino, including ultracompact Dekton slabs or the Eco Line series of Silestone, in tune with other recycled elements used in the space.

Cada año la Serpentine Gallery en Londres elige a un arquitecto internacional para construir un pabellón temporal en los jardines de Kensington, que se convierte en una visita imprescindible del verano.

Every year London’s Serpentine Gallery selects an international architect to design and build a temporary pavilion in Kensington Gardens, and which immediately becomes a ‘must’ summer visit.

Diseñado por Francis Kéré, el pabellón de la Serpentine Gallery 2017 se concibe como un microcosmos, una estructura comunitaria que fusiona las referencias culturales de Burkina Faso —el país de origen del arquitecto— con técnicas de construcción experimental. El proyecto se inspira en el árbol entendido como el lugar donde las personas se reúnen, donde las actividades cotidianas se desarrollan bajo la sombra de sus ramas. Una gran cubierta, formada por barras de acero y envuelta por una piel transparente, permite que el sol entre en el espacio y al mismo tiempo lo protege de la lluvia. En la superficie interior del techo, un conjunto de listones de madera filtran la luz, creando un patrón de sombras dinámicas. Dividido en cuatro tramos y separado de la cubierta, un muro curvo teñido de azul permite que el aire circule libremente en todas las direcciones e invita a la gente a entrar. Cuando llueve, la cubierta se convierte en un gran embudo que canaliza el agua hacia el centro de la estructura, simbolizando la importancia de este elemento como recurso fundamental para la supervivencia y la prosperidad humana. Por la noche, el dosel se convierte en un faro que permite localizar este lugar de reunión.

Designed by Francis Kéré, the 2017 Serpentine Pavilion is conceived as a microcosmos – a community structure within Kensington Gardens that fuses cultural references of the architect’s home country Burkina Faso with experimental construction techniques. The project takes inspiration in the tree as a place where people gather together, where everyday activities play out under the shade of its branches. The design for the Serpentine Pavilion has a great over-hanging roof canopy made of steel and a transparent skin covering the structure, which allows sunlight to enter the space while also protecting it from the rain. Wooden shading elements line the underside of the roof to create a dynamic shadow effect on the interior spaces. Split into four elements and detached from the roof canopy, a curved wall painted blue creates four different access points to the Pavilion and allows air to circulate freely throughout. In times of rain the roof becomes a funnel channelling water into the heart of the structure. This rain collection acts symbolically, highlighting water as a fundamental resource for human survival and prosperity. In the evening, the canopy becomes a source of illumination marking the location of this gathering place.

Pritzker laureate Rafael Moneo (1937) and the acclaimed historian and critic Kenneth Frampton (1930) converse in Madrid about the problems afflicting contemporary architecture.

El papel cada vez menos relevante que desempeña la teoría y, en general, el pensamiento en la práctica profesional son, según Frampton y Moneo, los principales retos a los que se enfrenta la arquitectura contemporánea. A este punto de partida se le suman las grandes transformaciones de la sociedad, la economía y la propia arquitectura que han hecho que los discursos tradicionales, basados en conceptos como el ‘espíritu de los tiempos’, la racionalidad o la fe en el progreso, resulten hoy inoperantes; o la precarización del mercado laboral que afecta a los más jóvenes. Frente a ello proponen una lectura crítica de la globalización y también una ética de la resistencia sostenida en los principios de la disciplina.

Kenneth Frampton (KF): Nos conocemos desde mediados de los años 1970, una época en la que la teoría era fundamental para los arquitectos. Cuarenta años más tarde, ya no es tan importante…

Rafael Moneo (RM): Creo que hoy se ha renunciado a que la teoría respalde la práctica arquitectónica: la batalla se ha perdido.

En la década de 1970, Peter Eisenman y otros probablemente confiaban aún en que

su enfoque, el de la visualidad pura aplicada a la construcción por influencia de Colin Rowe podía generalizarse. Hoy la teoría ha acabado en manos de escritores inspirados por el posestructuralismo, franceses sobre todo. La teoría ya no tiene en absoluto la

Durante toda la segunda mitad del siglo xx, para intentar averiguar lo que significaba la teoría de la arquitectura había que recurrir a los historiadores. Los historiadores eran, en cierto modo, los depositarios de una tradición y, como tales, definían el paradigma de lo que podríamos llamar las ‘modernidades’. Esto ha cambiado radicalmente con la llegada del nuevo siglo.

KF: Sí, es cierto.

RM: Los historiadores delimitan en buena medida el marco de intereses de los arqui-

tectos; necesitas ir a sus textos para saber lo que realmente importa. Pero el modo en que la historia de la modernidad se ha narrado ya no resulta útil en el contexto actual. Este es el problema.

KF: Por eso creo que el discurso filosófico podría ser más útil. La cuestión de si la ciudad tradicional puede ser el sustrato de algún tipo de continuidad en el contexto contemporáneo es realmente un problema de calado. Y uno de los problemas asociados más profundos es la idea de progreso y la cuestión de si tal idea sigue siendo válida, no sólo desde el punto de vista de la arquitectura, sino en general. ¿Podemos seguir creyendo en el progreso?

RM: Ya no somos capaces de pensar con claridad en términos de progreso.

‘Zeitgeist’ y utopía KF: Estudié arquitectura en los años 1950 en Londres, y en el contexto del Estado del Bienestar británico. Entonces era posible creer que la idea del progreso estaba íntimamente ligada con la modernidad, y que la modernización sólo podía traer beneficios a la sociedad. Era un momento muy inge-

The ever diminishing role played by theory and thought in professional practice is, according to Frampton and Moneo, one of the principal challenges that contemporary architecture is faced with. Add to this the great transformations taking place in society, the economy, and architecture itself, thanks to which the traditional discourses, based on concepts like Zeitgeist, rationalism, and faith in progress, are ineffective. Not to mention the precarization of the labor market, with its terrible effects on young people. In this situation Frampton and Moneo call for a more critical reading of globalization, and also an ethic of resistance grounded upon the principles of the architectural discipline.

Kenneth Frampton (KF): We have known each other since the mid-70s, a time in which theory was very important for architects.

Forty years later, the role of theory and the dimension of architecture is sort of diminished in the current debate…

Rafael Moneo (RM): I think that the attempt to make architectural theory uphold architectural practice is nowadays completely gone, the battle has been lost. In the 1970s, Peter Eisenman and others probably had the

idea that the pure visualism that was still embedded in building after Colin Rowe could be extended. Nowadays we say that theory fell into the hands of writers inspired by poststructuralism, French writers above all. It doesn’t at all have the presence that it used

Therefore it ought to be recognized that even in the entire second half of the 20th century, the true way to try to find out what architectural theory means ought to be figured out by reading historians. In a way, historians are depositaries, they have defined the paradigm of what could be considered ‘modernities,’ something that has changed radically in this new century.

KF: Yes, I think that’s right.

RM: The description of what architects have sought is in the hands of historians.

You need to go through the reading to extract

what actually matters: the way history has been told isn’t anymore as useful to what is happening today. That would be the point.

KF: This is why I think that philosophical discourse would be more useful. The question of whether the old city can sustain any continuity, given the modern reality, is really a deep problem. And one of the deep problems associated with it is the idea of progress and the question of whether that idea has real validity anymore, not only from the point of view of architecture, but altogether. The question of belief in progress is a problem.

RM: We are no longer able to think clearly in terms of progress.

‘Zeitgeist’ and Utopia KF: I studied architecture in the 1950s in London, and within the British welfare state.

It was possible then to think that the idea of progress was modernity, that modernization could only have a positive outcome for society.

It was a naïve moment. I think that this is still reflected in the first edition of Modern Architecture: A Critical History. But, for whatever reason, it took me ten years to write it, and my views already had been modified – by coming

to the States, as a matter of fact. The States was a big shock for me.

RM: I think that the big difference between what is happening today and what happened, say, in the period between the two great wars and developed in the 1950s and 1960s, is that in the 1920s we still had the sense that progress could be designed. You were able to think utopically in terms of how the idea of city could be. Now, I don’t believe we are able to foresee how things are going to be. And yet everybody believes in the future, but a future that is formless. Nobody knows exactly how this future is going to be. Therefore, architects are unclear today about times to come.

I believe that the future is going to happen in a positive way but I wonder if we are able to foresee, and therefore to design, and therefore to think about ideas like Zeitgeist, now. That has been such a crucial word to talk and think about. How many times has it been said that we should be the spirit of the times? Right now, who is able to decide what today’s spirit is?

KF: I think one of the things that we haven’t quite yet embraced is to recognize the limit of the question of progress. And one of the things that have replaced the idea of progress, in my opinion, is the idea of maximization.

So that in medicine, agriculture, and many fields, above all of course in late capitalist development, maximization is the driving instrumental force in society – such as to maximize agricultural production, maximize the direct treatment of sickness through pharmaceuticals, maximize development of cities in the sense of capitalist development. When you think of all these high-rise buildings everywhere, like London, they are so meaningless from the point of view of culture. They

RM: What comes together with this is that we have lost confidence in the value of the word ‘reason.’ We have to give reason another, different way of being understood, because, for instance, at this moment in time, that which can be rebuilt is reasonable. People often talk about architects who build, architects with a commitment to reflection, but where are the

discussing architects nowadays? Architects now spend more time discussing the means of production at all the design moments. For instance, it would be difficult nowadays to establish the bridge between the work of artists and the work of architects.

KF: I think that one of the problems is that art itself, also, is becoming commodified.

And commodification is one of the problems because architects tend to think of their work as large art. The problem with that is there is not the same dialectic between architecture and art that there was in the 1930s. When architects think in terms of building as large art, they run the risk also of the general commodification of art. That is the problem today.

Shaping the Void RM: You used the term ‘commodification.’ It’s true that when architecture becomes that, it enters another order of things that doesn’t fulfil the duty of serving reason. Something that happens a lot nowadays and didn’t happen before.

KF: Somewhere, early on, Van Eyck, for example, says this aphorism about how architects can build if the society does not have form? How can the architect build the ‘counterform’ if it doesn’t have form.This is almost

nuo. Creo que esto se refleja en la primera edición de Modern Architecture: A Critical History. Pero, por lo que sea, tardé diez años en escribirlo, y en este tiempo mis puntos de vista cambiaron, sobre todo al radicarme en los Estados Unidos. Conocer este país fue un gran shock para mí.

RM: Pienso que la gran diferencia entre lo que sucede hoy y lo que sucedía, pongamos por caso, en el periodo entre las dos guerras mundiales y después en las décadas de 1950 y 1960, es que en los años 1920 todavía se tenía la sensación de que el progreso se podía diseñar. Uno estaba legitimado para pensar utópicamente.

Ahora, no creo que podamos prever cómo van a ser las cosas. Y sin embargo, todo el mundo sigue creyendo en el futuro, pero en un futuro informe. Hoy los arquitectos no tienen una idea clara de los tiempos que se avecinan. Creo que el futuro se va a desarrollar de una manera positiva, pero me pregunto si seremos capaces de anticiparnos a él y, por lo tanto, de diseñarlo. En una palabra: de seguir pensando a partir de ideas como la del Zeitgeist, el ‘espíritu de los tiempos’. Zeitgeist fue una palabra fundamental: ¿cuántas veces se ha repetido que los arquitectos debemos estar a la altura del espíritu de los tiempos? Pero, ahora, ¿quién es capaz de decir en qué consiste el espíritu de los tiempos?

KF: Creo que una de las cosas que aún no hemos asimilado es reconocer los límites de la idea de progreso. Una de las cosas que hoy han reemplazado a la noción de progreso es la de maximización. En la medicina, la agricultura y en otros muchos campos, sobre todo en el desarrollo del capitalismo

tardío, la maximización se ha convertido en una de las grandes fuerzas que mueven la sociedad: la maximización de la producción agrícola, la maximización del tratamiento de las enfermedades mediante medicamentos, la maximización de las ciudades en términos de desarrollo capitalista.

Todos esos rascacielos que proliferan por el mundo, como en Londres, ¿qué son sino máquinas ajenas a la cultura y concebidas

RM: A esto se suma el hecho de que hemos perdido la confianza en el valor de la palabra ‘razón’. Necesitamos darle otro sentido, desde el momento en que hoy todo lo que pueda construirse resulta sin más razonable. A veces se habla de los arquitectos ‘intelectuales’, aquellos que reflexionan y construyen, pero, ¿dónde están este tipo de arquitectos hoy? Los profesionales ahora tienen que emplear mucho más tiempo en los medios de producción de la disciplina.

Hoy, por ejemplo, resulta más difícil tender puentes entre el trabajo de los artistas y el de los arquitectos.

KF: Pienso que, en ese sentido, uno de los problemas es que el propio arte se está mercantilizando. La mercantilización es un gran problema porque los arquitectos piensan que su trabajo es una especie de arte a gran escala. Pero entre la arquitectura y el

arte no puede darse ya la misma dialéctica que la que se daba en los años 1930. Cuando los arquitectos conciben hoy los edificios como un arte a gran escala hacen que su disciplina corra el mismo riesgo que corre el arte: el riesgo de la mercantilización.

Dando forma al vacío RM: Has usado el término ‘mercantilización’. Es cierto que cuando la arquitectura se mercantiliza pasa a formar parte de un contexto en el que ya no se le exige servir a la razón. Es algo que sucede mucho hoy y que no pasaba antes.

KF: En algún lugar, Aldo van Eyck se pregunta cómo pueden los arquitectos dar forma a una sociedad que ya no tiene forma, encontrar la ‘contraforma’. Se trataba de una profecía hace treinta o cuarenta años, ¡pero hoy es un problema real!

RM: En este sentido, si los principios descriptivos y normativos de la arquitectura han estado durante la modernidad en manos de los historiadores, hoy resulta necesario reconocer que su narración ya no resulta útil en la medida en que ha perdido su carácter explicativo y no da cuenta ya de la realidad.

KF: Ese es el problema. Y lo notas; lo notas cuando dialogas con estudiantes. Se ha producido un vacío, una brecha que quieres cubrir, aunque no resulte fácil conseguirlo.

RM: Creo que este problema podría encararse dando a la palabra ‘continuidad’ un sentido positivo en lugar de uno negativo: dando cuenta, por ejemplo, de la historia que ha definido el contexto en el que trabajas, la historia, pongamos por caso, de

los doscientos últimos años… Todavía sigo creyendo que hay que ser muy cuidadoso a la hora de renunciar a las preexistencias, de desperdiciarlas…

KF: En este sentido, recuerdo algo que dijo un marxista argentino (citado tal vez por Tomás Maldonado), y que me impactó mucho: no se puede hacer nada sin generar desperdicios. Se trata de una declaración sorprendente. Es a esto, precisamente, a lo que nos estamos enfrentando.

RM: Siempre es necesario construir.

Construir es un acto de fuerza que siempre implica dañar algo hasta cierto punto: no hay duda al respecto. Además, es imposible repetir una y otra vez lo mismo, quedarse quietos para siempre. Cuanto más en profundidad conoces la historia de la arquitectura, más te das cuenta de la rapidez con la que cambian las cosas. Se necesitan largos periodos de tiempo para que un tipo arquitectónico se desarrolle, y, sin embargo, no puedes dejar de estar siempre alerta: lo ves cambiar año a año. Pero los nuevos arquitectos ya no son capaces de adaptarse a ningún esquema de estricta repetición.

KF: Para las generaciones más jóvenes, el problema está, por ejemplo, en la seguridad en el empleo, que ya no se da por hecha. No

hay estabilidad, sino lo contrario: la sociedad en su conjunto resulta muy inestable.

Y esta es la razón por la que, a riesgo de parecer un poco ridículo, sigo pensando en términos de resistencia. No en el sentido de que uno no deba cambiar, sino en el de que la arquitectura todavía tiene el potencial de dar a los seres humanos, durante el tiempo de su corta vida, algún tipo de sostén. Se trata de una aspiración que, de algún modo, acaba siendo ética.

RM: Pero, aunque ya no sepamos cuál es la verdadera expresión del Zeitgeist hoy,

«Construir es un acto de fuerza que siempre implica dañar algo» resulta difícil creer que lo que hacemos está al margen de lo que la sociedad nos pide.

Desde este punto de vista, no es difícil entender cómo se construirá el mundo. Pero esto no implica que no debamos aceptar que lo que sucede en el mundo de la arquitectura probablemente refleja, nos guste o no, lo que está sucediendo en el mundo en general.

KF: Creo que tras esta situación subyace

un problema de clases sociales en la medida en que, en cierto modo, podría decirse que el proyecto asociado a la idea de progreso, el proyecto de la Ilustración, es un proyecto de la clase media. Y podría decirse que la fe en la democracia también lo es, y que, cuando se acaba con la clase media o cuando no se es capaz de producir más clase media, entonces lo que se pierde es la propia democracia. Esta es la situación en la que nos encontramos, porque todo ese movimiento de dinero que, con la globalización, acaba en la cúspide de la pirámide social, forma parte de otro movimiento que destruye la clase media.

RM: Es cierto que parece que la clase media hoy está en su mayor parte destruida, y sin embargo esto implica que los nuevos proletarios no son ajenos a muchas de las cosas más valiosas producidas por la cultura y la historia. Tienes que admitir que antes la gente nunca tuvo la oportunidad de sentirse realizada, de llegar a las cosas valiosas de la vida…

KF: La paradoja es que cuando esas cosas se comienzan a mercantilizar, como ocurre con todo, entonces el valor del objeto deseado empieza a dejar de ser algo deseable.

Se trata de un extraño enigma.

RM: It’s true that once the expression and the description of what architecture thinks about how it should proceed is in the hands of historians, you need to tell historians that the narrative they have followed is no longer valuable for explaining.

KF: That’s the problem. And you feel it. You feel it when you talk to students. There’s this gap. I try to cover the gap but it’s not easy.

RM: It has also to do with this respect or attempt to give the word ‘continuity’ a positive meaning instead of a bad one, in this case following the hints given by the place itself, by the reading of how this piece of land had been 200 years before… I still believe that you have to be careful about wasting…

KF: There’s this funny figure, an Argentinian Marxist, who had a big impact on me. He says somewhere (maybe Tomás Maldonado quoted him) that you can’t make anything without waste, this is distinguishable from ideology of waste. It’s an amazing statement.

And this is really what we are facing.

RM: You always need to build. Building is an act of force that always means leaving something damaged somehow: no doubt about

it. Besides, it’s impossible to repeat things. It’s impossible not to move. The more you know about architectural history, the more you realize how rapidly changes happen. It seems like a long period of time for evolving a type, and yet you have an alert eye. You see changes every year. But new architects are unable to go through this scheme of strict repetition.

KF: For the young generation, the whole question, for instance, of security of employment, is no longer so evident. There is no stability. The opposite, society is very unstable.

And this is why I, however pathetic, think

“Building is an act of force that always means leaving something damaged” in terms of resistance. Not in the sense that one shouldn’t change, but in the sense that architecture still has that potential to give to human beings, in their own short life, some kind of ground. Otherwise there is no ground.

Somehow here there is an ethical question.

RM: Even though we don’t know what the true expression of the Zeitgeist is nowadays, it is difficult to believe that what we do is outside what society wants done. From this point of

view, it is not difficult to understand what the world will build. But this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t accept that what is happening probably reflects, whether we like it or not, what is happening in the world as a whole.

KF: But I think somewhere there is this issue of class, because in a way you could say that the project of the Enlightenment is a middle-class project. And you could also say that the belief in democracy is also a middleclass thing. And when the middle class is eliminated, or suppressed, or when you don’t produce a middle class, you can’t have democracy anymore. This is the kind of situation we are in because all this money that is going to the top of the pyramid is also part of a movement that means to destroy the middle class.

That is the danger of the moment.

RM: It seems that today the middle class is almost destroyed, and yet that means that the new proletarians have been taxed on many of the most valuable things culture and history has produced… You have to admit that never before did people have such a sense of fulfilment, of arriving at valuable things of life...

KF: The paradox is that when you begin to commodify, though, like everything, then the value desired starts to fall as something desirable. This is a funny kind of strange enigma.
