VISUAL ARTS BARBADOS EVENTS Facebookon Open 24/7 Updated https://www.facebook.com/groups/175529135827747daily

I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on. I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts. Thank you for understanding.
The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas. The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, Iresidencies.willalsopost visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.

ALISON CHAPMAN-ANDREWS ‘Catholene ‘ series
Portrait of Alison by Arthur
Atkinson

“The paintings are all of my model and muse, Catholene Weekes. “The last of the old time maids” was how she once described herself. However, this year, she changed her appearance completely by having a haircut. Her amazing posture is emphasized by the title THE QUEEN MOTHER HAS A HAIRCUT and, on the wall, behind, the vague image of the Benin ivory pendant mask known as the “queen mother “. The curtain is based on a hanging in my collection by Heather Dawn Scott and gives the colour theme used throughout of redness. We are both getting older, I am preparing for my 80th exhibitions, and my eyes are not able to change focus between model and picture, anymore, so this maybe the Therelast. are 12 paintings, starting in 2014 , but only 4 large ones, each of these has a painted sketch, which may be a detail, an initial idea, or show where it could be developed.”

ART OVER SUGAR

On Wednesday 20 July a small band of artists revisited the site of their crime 30 years ago at Vaucluse Plantation Yard to view the preserved evidence. The crime was an alternative Crop-Over event with visual artists, musicians, poets, storytellers, who gathered together for a happening. In evidence were a 24ft mural by Ras Ishi Butcher, a 24ft mural by Akyem Ramsay, a 6ft mural by Arlette St. Hill, 3ft candle stands by Dawn Pionkowski, along with the list of perpetrators. Kudos to property owners Ed and Dawn Pionkowski for safeguarding the crime scene. Following is the crime report by Alison Greaves (Chapman-Andrews) in her weekly newspaper column “Gallerie” of 9th August 1992, Sunday Nation: Congratulations to sculptor Gayle Hermick for devising and presenting an alternative crop-over event Art Over Sugar in her Vaucluse studio. Her tall steel planter arched over hundreds entering the happening. Inside the derelict factory Ras Akyem, Ras Ishi and Arlette St. Hill painted murals. Hilary Armstrong, Anne Dodson, Bill Grace, Alison Chapman-Andrews, George McBean, Derek Went and Jean Leslie produced banners while Sharon Oran and Annalee Davis did installations. Goldie Spieler had made a complete pottery table-setting. The visual artists did not fill the space like the musicians but could you image Ras Ishi’s “Cane Cutter” even larger? Derek Went’s banner of abstract cane and Ann Dobson’s repeat of workers were outstanding. The performances made the day as the optimism of one contrasted with the serious message of the next. Annalee Davis wrapped Colin Hudson like a mummy while his national anthem and sugar facts became more suffocated. Overhead Winston Farrell and Ken Corsbie performed poetry and Geraldine Archer and Arturo Tappin made music. Eric Lewis and Jeanette Springer both brought out the hardships of workers past and present. From this happening a visual artists association, “RA (Representing Artists)”, emerged. In 2019, Annalee Davis reflected on the why and the outcome of this event, ( see next pages) Text and photos Norma Springer
ART OVER SUGAR ART CRIME SCENE REVISITED AFTER 30 YEARS
ART OVER SUGAR - A Reflection
Around this time, the National Cultural Foundation (organiser of Barbados’ participation at the 1992 CARIFESTA V arts festival in Trinidad and Tobago) gave artists twenty-four hours to produce and submit work. As a result of the happening, the short-lived Barbados Representing Artists (RA) was formed. They collectively penned a statement explaining their grievance with this unprofessional approach at national selection and representation.
The statement read: The one-day notice CARIFESTA organisers gave to Barbadian artists to create, frame, and submit a work of art (maximum dimensions 20” x 40”) to a jury is a direct abrogation of artists' fundamental creative rights, is antiexcellence in art and brings into question CARIFESTA's entire cultural mandate.
Shortly thereafter, Representing Artists (RA) was co-founded and, although short-lived (1992-1994), it shook up the space, impacting the Barbadian art scene by challenging the status quo of mediocrity, mitigating isolation, and forming regional alliances through its RA newsletter, which I edited for its six issues.
Annalee Davis, 2019 Art Over Sugar (1992), collaboratively organized with Barbadian-based Canadian sculptor Gayle Hermick, took place in a former sugar factory that was her studio. A one-day 'Happening', we curated an inter-disciplinary group of twenty-two creatives including visual artists, poets, musicians, dancers and comedians invited to respond to the derelict building and demise of the 300 year old sugar industry. We had no idea if anyone would showup, yet an audience of five hundred appeared out of seemingly nowhere.
Signed by twelve artists, (Ras Akyem, Hillary Armstrong, Annalee Davis, Anne Dodson, David Gall, Indrani Gall, Jean Goddard, Bill Grace, Ras Ishi, Martine Pile, Simon Pile, and Derek Went) printed and matted with a faux gilt frame, it was collectively submitted and rejected by the jury. Hanging in my studio, it suggests inadequacies of the nation-state and reminds me of the need to continually agitate for professionalism, equity, and fairness.
RA represented a microcosm of the larger nation-state. We were without the necessary guidelines clarifying how to extricate ourselves from a traumatic and divisive colonial past. RA was a naive attempt to cohere a small ambitious and committed group of artists who desperately wanted more from this place.

In spite of the shared desire to be part of an expanded community, RA became a family of outcasts with all the unattended challenges and betrayals eliciting the union's explosive end. Familiar divisions of race, class, and gender were ineffectively managed –we didn't have the coping mechanisms–, so much so that when the opportunity came for me to migrate to Trinidad with my family, I vowed never to return again. The fracture seemed so complete—I felt as though there was no room for me in this small place. America, the Caribbean, and their Annalee Davis

Performer with Annalee Davis is Colin Hudson
In front of an audience of about 500 Barbadians, I collaborated with the late Colin Hudson - agriculturalist, inventor, singer and field naturalist. Together Colin and I opened the altar to present the unholy trinity of politician, farmer and businessman, all complicit in the crime of cutting up agricultural land and selling lots to the highest bidder, while a woman screams loudly at the horror. I draped Colin in a sheet of white cotton and wrapped his body from head to foot in long strips of white gauze. He sang the Barbados national anthem which he interjected with provocative questions and statements. Playing on words in the anthem, he noted that “only this morning the papers said another 2,000 acres were no longer our very own”. He provocatively challenged our role as active citizens as stated in the anthem to be “strict guardians of our heritage, firm craftsmen of our fate” by suggesting alternatively that we were strict guardians of our heritage and firm craftsmen of our fate. He continued saying that in 1948 the director general of the Food and Agriculture Organization named Barbados as one of the six most important examples of tropical agriculture. He ended like a broken gramophone player, mummified by the fabric. http://annaleedavis.com

The Things We Worship consisted of an altarpiece activated during a 1992 performance at the dilapidated Vaucluse sugar factory as part of a one day ‘happening’ called Art Over Sugar. When closed, the altar displays a central image of a rural Barbadian landscape flanked on one side by a fish out of water and sugar cane at sea. On the reverse of the altar is a red line-drawing of a rural landscape perforated by a ‘cut along the dotted line’ - eagerly followed by scissors - a reference to permissions granted for the cutting up of prime agricultural land for housing lots and golf courses requiring the use of pesticides and copious quantities of water in an already water-scarce country.

TAISHA CARRINGTON

Artist Taisha Carrington on her installation. ‘State (of mind)’ Sharing a part of my video from my installation called ‘State (of mind)’ at @atelier89 for This work began with an interrogation of the language around our State(nation) and how it impacts Words and phrases like ‘just a small country’, ‘developing nations’, ‘island’ ( and its connotations of ‘isolation’) and how this can subconsciously affect ideas of self. During this performance, done alone on an uninhabited Islet, I made a new space for myself as a reference point- a moment in time- where I separated state and state of mind. With the empty island acting as a blank slate, I traced myself, dug out my negative shape and filled the space with my body, creating a new landscape and connection with an ‘imaginary’ place outside of my nation. With my recent work I continue to think on themes of transience, isolation, agility, resilience and adaptation as it relates to the Caribbean. All change begins with a thought.” edited by @ethanarchipelago Drone footage by @ryanedsonl Other footage by me Production assistants @kathkennedyart and @lenernds90

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”

The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
