The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

How It Happened
I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.
What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.
The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.
Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.
The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

SUSAN MAINS

ASHER MAINS

Sunflowers never caught my notice until my husband casually noted that they were his favourite flower.
Suddenly I started seeing sunflowers everywhere, in gardens, in art, in July with the Tour de France, and even in the hearts of my quirky mathematician friends, sunflowers suddenly bloomed in my imagination. Since 2020 sunflower seeds have been a challenge for me to acquire but recently I found them back on the shelves. I started planting them in the garden as a surprise for my husband, I knew it would take him a while to notice our tallest guests but the actual struggle was keeping the youngest kids from squealing in excitement whenever he got too close. Happy children are the worst secret keepers.
When the sunflowers started to bloom and my husband finally noticed the giant stems his smile was worth the effort.
Photographing them was unplanned, I grabbed my phone and documented them often with groceries in one hand, while looking for a misplaced toy, or rushing to drop children off to their various activities, one day I even grabbed a few shots while dashing outside to rescue laundry from unexpected rain. The eye loves pattern and symmetry and sunflowers provide both. Light dances on the multiple textures found in the flowers and the tonal values between stem and petal are almost perfect in the early morning or late afternoon but putting aside the technical aspects, sunflowers, these sunflowers were perfect because they made my children giggle in anticipation and my husband smile with the knowledge that he is appreciated even in something so small as a flower.

JENNY GONSALVES
WOMAN
Her story is far from simple
It’s
Messy
Raw
Real Complex
Her Story is about Her journey
About finding Her voice & asserting Her place in a world that may sometimes feel unforgiving
It’s filled with moments She wishes She could erase
But it’s a story of Resilience
Finding Peace in the Chaos
A story not just of Survival but one of Triumph & discovering a Grace within Herself

CHERYL SMALL
After getting a DSLR some seven years ago, Cheryl decided to join the Barbados Photographic Society, where she could rub shoulders with like-minded persons and participate in training workshops, field trips and overseas photography tours.
Inspired by photographers such as Martin Osner from South Africa and our very own Hugh Walker, her main interest is in Landscape and Fine Art photography.
When not on field trips or photo walks with the BPS, you can often find her wandering around Barbados with her camera, taking images of anything that catches her eye.

ANN MARIE MASSIAH
“My goal is to use my photography as a therapeutic tool to transport the viewer to a better place”. Ann Marie’s passion for photography led her to study the art and science of photography at Barbados Community College and her artistic vision and creativity were further developed when she obtained a certificate in “Seeing Through Photographs” from the Museum of Modern Art. Additionally, Ann Marie loves to capture the beauty of nature although she appreciates all genres of photography. She also enjoys Field Trips and Photo Walks and has exhibited her work in the Barbados Photographic Society’s Bajan Life Virtual Online Exhibition and the 2nd Annual Caribbean Photo Walk. Ann Marie is a Counsellor/Social Worker, and her mantra is “Self-care: You Can’t Pour from an Empty Cup”, was depicted as two leaves of the Joseph’s Coat plant and was exhibited in the “Of All Genres Exhibition 2024”. In her free time, Ann Marie enjoys travelling, listening to music, dancing, and exercising.

ELIZABETH MANDEVILLE
Elizabeth has a passion for landscapes and animal photography.
Name of Image: "Hidden"
Image Description: This image shows the beauty of the peacock hidden in is

ALISON ELLIOT
My passion for photography is closely connected to my love of travel, exploring new vistas and cultures, my love of animals, wildlife and nature in general. This parallels my interest in sports photography, especially equestrian disciplines. Having competed horses in my younger days, it gives me an insight into the requirement of the riders for the ultimate overall picture required! Self-taught, but always ready to listen and learn to improve, over the years I have exhibited with the Barbados Photographic Society and won Silver and Bronze medals at the NIFCA competitions. This image is one of my older photographs but the one which truly ignited a passion for wildlife photography. Taken in the Falkland Islands, the Rock Hopper Penguins brave the rough seas to jump onto the cliffs then begin an arduous climb (or hop!) upwards towards their breeding grounds. They pause at a freshwater spring to wash off the salt, preen and perhaps meet their partners before continuing their climb. Oblivious to the few humans who make it to this remote Saunders Island, they follow their age-old paths to their nests. The photographer clung to the slippery rocks and Antarctic wind whipped! A once in a lifetime opportunity.

CHERYL McCOLLIN-WALKER
Title of Photo: Love is in the Air
The power of black and white photography intrigues me with its ability to highlight the essence of a scene, stripping away distractions and revealing underlying beauty, thus telling its own story.

LINDA BRISTOV-BROWN
Born and raised in the UK to Barbadian parents, I have always had a profound connection to both cultures.
After graduating from the London College of Printing with a BA (Hons) in graphic design, I became a computer graphics technician, followed by a role as a computer graphics trainer. These roles prepared me for the various hats I wore while working for a software company.
Despite always being surrounded by creative minds, I felt a void in my own creative expression. I have now seized the opportunity to explore my creative self through photography. This is my moment to unleash the artist within. Through my lens I aim to share the captivating stories, colours, and emotions of my view of the world, weaving together my British upbringing and Barbadian heritage into a visual tapestry that celebrates the essence of both worlds.

SYBIL EDGHILL
I have always been interested in photography, from pre-teens. However, it was not until digital cameras became available, and having taken a few courses, I am now realising my dreams.
Image Description
This image was taken a few days ago at the BTMI Barbados Surf Pro and Live Like Zander Junior Pro competition held at the Soup Bowl, Bathsheba, Barbados

AUDREY BRYAN
Audrey’s interest in photography as a hobby developed from the early darkroom days at the Barbados Community College in the 1980s to digital in the 2000s. The experiences gained from field trips, overseas tours and thereafter presenting her pieces in various exhibitions, are valuable to her. The growth achieved and exposure from public exhibitions at Cuba Experience in 2015, “Lens Speaks’ in 2017, ‘Joining The Gathering” in 2020 and “20 Years of Light” in 2024 including various online exhibitions, are treasured. The Barbados Photographic Society afforded her these opportunities and she is grateful for the training from the various workshops, critique sessions and annual photowalks. Her goal is to continue to raise the quality of her images and to develop more creativity in this craft which continues to evolve.
Man and Dog take a tranquil, misty morning walk along the rugged East Coast waves. It is striking that the woman is not beside them to be part of that journey. Our women continue to cry, as the family unit continues to dwindle as our population growth continues to reduce. The appeal of the great singer Bob Marley in his song, No Women, No Cry is relevant today.

SABINE WYATT
Sabine Wyatt is a German self taught photographer.
She learnt to see the light and watch her surrounding with the eyes of a photographer through a number of online courses. Her passions is street photography. People in their daily life and routine is what she takes mainly.
I took this photo at Oistin’s Fish market a few days ago. I like the light and her content expression in which she stands there and plays her instrument, totally undisturbed by the crowd around her. The photo represents something very fundamental about the island’s heritage. The sound of the steel drums is as much part of Barbados as is the sound of the waves.

YVETTE REID
Yvette has always been interested in creating a print of what she was able to view; to be able to go back to it at some point. So, while still in the later years of Secondary School she started her photographic journey. Her nickname is "Steady Hands", as she has come up without the aid of a tripod or monopod over the years; which she thinks is a good thing. It taught the principle of getting your stance and holding your breath. Coming from the age of film it has also taught her to really think about her composition. Yvette has won gold and bronze awards for her work. Some of her work can be found in the US, UK and New Zealand.
Photo: This image was taken on the cliffs off the area of The Animal Flower Cave when the North Swells were raging. The sea in all its majesty.

RASHEDA DANIEL
Introducing Rasheda Anna-Rose Daniel, a fusion of passion and artistry. A dedicated photographer specializing in landscapes, seascapes, wildlife and the boundless beauty of nature. Originally from the picturesque island of Barbados, she spent many years residing in Trinidad and Tobago before returning to Barbados. Her development as a photographer was profoundly shaped during her youth, as she consistently captured cherished moments at family and friend’s events. As she progressed in honing her skills, she successfully completed a Professional Photography Course at the New York Institute of Photography. This training significantly broadened her understanding of the art of photography.
Her photography has been prominently showcased in exhibitions organized by the Barbados Photographic Society and has appeared in Barbados Visual Arts Magazine, highlighting her commitment and the compelling nature of her work.
Title: The Iguana

TASHAIA BURNETT
I am a novice photographer, still getting my feet wet but not yet immersed in the art form. I am constantly seeing the beauty in everyday life and finding opportunities to capture that beauty from behind the lens. My desire is to recreate the images and feelings I see capture with my internal camera –my eyes - with my external camera. With patience and persistence everything is possible.

CORRIE SCOTT
Artist. Photographer. Curator. Writer. Publisher.
CORRIE SCOTT
Corrie, self-taught, has photographed, and also scribbled and painted on everything she could find since childhood. Her special love of the Caribbean is apparent in her photography and her art.
With a camera always close to hand Corrie captures those elusive human moments and those 'around the corner' views that delight. The backlight of a flower, a turtle popping its head up above water, a lonely worker in the fields, a huddle of ladies gossiping under an umbrella, the balletic movements of the fishermen as they use their nets, sunsets, pets and more.

“The female face speaks for itself, but I had to dig deep into the term " Female facets" as it relates to femininity and female characteristics. Chatgpt highlights some of the following areas when looking at the female facets. Physical appearance (facial features and body structure etc); Social and Cultural facet (gender roles, feminism and women's rights movement, beauty standards and fashion trends); Intellectual and Professional facets ( women as leaders, their contribution to the arts, science and politics); Relational facets (their roles as wives, mothers, their role in the family.”

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!
My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Helping the young talent where we can.
This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art.
I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena.
These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting.
Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados.
Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need.
Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving.
Please don’t add their names here. Private message me.
Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them.

QUEEN’S PARK GALLERY

Our Mission
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The Role of the NCF
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
FUNCTIONS
of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets
To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
