The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.

The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.

I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.

I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.

I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.

Thank you for understanding.

Risée Chaderton-Charles will be presenting her fine art series ‘Caribbean Atlantean’ in an exhibition with ‘Site Festival’

Created by Stroud Valleys Artspace (SVA), Stroud, UK.

Saturday, June 7, 2025 - Sunday, June 22, 2025 Artist Talk Monday June 16th SVA Gallery, 4 John Street Stroud GL5 2HA

https://www.sitefestival.org.uk/site-2025/2025/5/2/risee-chaderton-Charles

“Risée Chaderton-Charles, our guest artist from Barbados presents ‘Caribbean Atlantean’, a new series of digital collage pieces created by merging photography, digital illustration, text, and watercolour which tell the stories of Africans who jumped from the slave ships - who chose the water instead of the world of colonizers.

Risée Chaderton-Charles is a photographer and digital artist with over 25 years of experience in art photography, wedding photography, portrait photography, and photojournalism, encompassing work in Barbados, Trinidad, and New York. Her recent work incorporates physical media, photography, digital collage, and digital illustration — built on a foundation of photography, painting, and sketching… but all used to tell stories.

Her academic training includes a diploma in Cultural Studies, and she currently lectures in photography at a tertiary level, teaching both the mechanics of photography and the role of photography in culture and social commentary.

There is room below : Risée Chaderton-Charles

Her fine-art and journalistic work reflect her interest in history and social issues, with specific focus on Black Caribbean women, and the understanding of their own worth and agency.

Caribbean Atlantean is a series of digital collage pieces created by merging photography, digital illustration, text, and watercolour in a unique way. Chaderton-Charles combines her years of experience as a photographer with her fine art skills and her love of history to create underwater worlds, illustrating stories that are often untold and glossed over. Caribbean Atlantean tells the stories of Africans who jumped from the slave ships — who chose the water instead of the world of colonizers.

The Atlanteans become goddesses and ancestors, and are woven into the folklore of Caribbean people. The images are overlaid with archival documents and the writings of modern Caribbean voices. A quote from Dr Karen Lord’s layered contemporary novel “The Blue, Beautiful World” is incorporated into “And Now We Are Free”. Angry public comments on race are incorporated into “Small Up Yourself”. Maps and archival illustrations are incorporated into “There Is Room Below”. Caribbean Atlantean is a visual voyage from the western coast of Africa, through time and across an ocean. to the shores of the Caribbean

“My work is like a mosquito, a buzzing in your ear that inspires a frantic search for the source and the meaning of the noise. It is art that creates anticipation of potential discomfort as the viewer moves through the visual space.

Art doesn’t have to be pleasant, art does not have to be comfortable, art doesn’t even have to be pretty but art should cause reaction, and my challenge is to make the audience see into the dark, dusty corners of our shared history. The corners that we are often more comfortable leaving untouched in both social conversations and within our own minds.”

Artist Jeannie Taylor’s etching has been accepted by the Royal Academy, London, UK, for their annual Summer Exhibition, which is the world’s oldest open submission exhibition, held since 1769.

“Held every year since 1769, the Summer Exhibition displays works in a variety of mediums and genres by emerging and established artists.”

“The Summer Exhibition is the world’s oldest open submission exhibition – which means that anyone can enter their work to be considered for inclusion. It's happened every year since 1769, and each year a Royal Academician, such as Yinka Shonibare RA, Grayson Perry RA and Jock McFadyen RA, coordinates the exhibition.

On May 22nd, the International Day of Biodiversity, we officially opened the visual arts exhibition "Harmony With Nature and Sustainable Development".

Through their art, the artists pulled viewers into lush environments of flora and fauna in Barbados - from the creeping vines and towering trees living symbiotically, to the precious habitats of various animals in the Graeme Hall swamp - while reminding us of their vital importance in a rapidly changing world, and their need to be preserved and protected.

Thank you to everyone who came out and attended the opening reception, the artists for their inspiring artwork, and of course to the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification, @biodiversity.bb and @artistsalliancebds for arranging this exhibition.

The exhibition will run till the 28th of June, 2025. We invite you to come on down and experience it!

Worlds

Collide Barbados’ Art Show at 02 Beach Club & Spa

with live performances that blended music, art, and culture.

May 18th, 2025.

The feature artist exhibiting this year was Bajan visual art Shane Eastmond, who performed a live painting demonstration. Eastmond will be joined by a talented lineup of performers and fellow visual artists including Worlds Collide founder Stefan Amali, Brandon Best, Julianne Gill, Sophie Skinner, Art by Ancient, Junior Sealy, Lagoon Wavy, and Islandboyray, who took the stage with live performances that blended music, art, and culture.

The vibe was warm and electric at the Worlds Collide Barbados event that took place recently at Oro restaurant inside the O2 Beach Club and Spa in the parish of Christ Church.

The exhibition featured the lovely art of Bajan artist Shane Eastmond, with a handful of other Barbados and Caribbean artists also showing works and in attendance. Eastmond as well did a "live painting" during the event as attendants watched and listened to Eastmond's *process*, while the other artists gladly showed off and gave background to their collectively bold and vibrant art works.

Artist Maria Stanford is the KAC GFA SOLO Artist for May 2025

https://www.kacgfa.com/solo-artist-maria-sanford

“It has been great for us to see the international collection of artists and art lovers—from places such as the US, the UK, Ireland, Togo, Nigeria, South Africa, Ireland, Canada, Poland, China, Barbados, and more!— who have discovered or re-engaged with the colorful, aerial perspective, tropical representations of our KAC GFA SOLO Artists for May 2025, Maria Stanford.

Her visually dreamy yet grounded artworks playfully use distance as a means to drawer the viewer closer in, inviting an uplifting accessibility and identifiability with its sunny subjects, whether it be people, terra, architecture, or any combination thereof.

Stanford's SOLO Artist exhibition runs for just one more week (through May 31) and the editorial thread of her works selected for the exhibition provide the light and hopeful expectations of our upcoming summers of respite and recreation.”

LLANOR ALLEYNE

Congratulations to Llanor Alleyne whose mixed media collage , “Another Poem (For Colin Robinson),” is among the works to recently join the collection at the LeslieLohman Museum of Art, Soho, New York, USA

Llanor Alleyne’s (@llapen) mixed media collage Born in Barbados and raised in New York, Alleyne explores queer and feminine identities from a Caribbean perspective, using the many layers of collage to depict the complexity of the queer or feminine self. Her identification with flowers, seeds, leaves, and vines comes from their significance in Caribbean culture as symbols of resilience and change.

This work was commissioned for our 2024 exhibition “The Plural of He,” a tribute to Trinidadian American poet, critic, and activist Colin Robinson (1961–2021), curated by Andil Gosine. Robinson was co-founder of the New York State Black Gay Network, the Audre Lorde Project, and, in Trinidad and Tobago, the Coalition Advocating for Inclusion of Sexual Orientation (CAISO). “Another Poem” grounds Robinson’s rich activist and poetic legacy in his two homes. The silhouette at the center of the work is based on a Robert Giard photograph of Robinson in New York City (which is also in our collection), and the mountains are inspired by photos of Robinson’s home in Trinidad and Tobago.

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS

How It Happened

I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.

What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.

The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.

Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.

The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.

I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.

With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Helping the young talent where we can.

This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art.

I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena.

These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting.

Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados.

Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need.

Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving.

Please don’t add their names here. Private message me.

Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them.

QUEEN’S PARK GALLERY

Our Mission

To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.

The Role of the NCF

The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.

FUNCTIONS

of the NCF are:

To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally

To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government

To organize cultural festivals

Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.

OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:

To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work

To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage

To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains

To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms

To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders

To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets

To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
