VISUAL ARTS BARBADOS

All issues
This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place.
Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible.
Corrie Scott PublisherThe Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on. I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding. Corrie Scott
‘
Unearthing Identity’, recent ceramic work by Juliana Inniss
Thursday 8 September – October 29th at The Brighton Storeroom.
Opening hours are 7am - 10am every Saturday (and by appointment).
“The Brighton Storeroom is delighted to announce an exhibition of recent ceramic works by Barbadian artist Juliana Inniss. The new works are large in scale and are informed and inspired by traditional African pottery, particularly clay vessels made by women.
Unearthing Identity is Inniss’ second solo show, and features a unique body of hand coiled workmade with a variety of clays – created in her Christ Church studio in Barbados. This collection of work focuses on the physical form of a vessel and reimagines it as a container for both the tangible and the intangible: a home for shared heritage, stories and spirits.
Several of Inniss’ vessels refer directly to the funerary anthropomorphic urns of the Bura culture from the Lower Niger River valley in Niger and in Burkina Faso. These extraordinary and little-known artifacts, created during a thousand year period from the Third Century onward, were the genesis of Inniss’ own vessels for holding the spirits of ancestors.
The artist has spoken of the significance of her research into African pottery and how it has informed her practice: “….. importantly for me, it is the Afro-woman traditional pot-making narrative that I am most interested in sharing……it gives me a sense of groundedness and connects me to this heritage….”
Juliana Inniss has established herself as one of Barbados’ most important contemporary artists. Her two major Public Commissions last year to the Golden Square Freedom Park in Bridgetown are a reminder of her national importance in exploring the way in which shared private exploration and story-telling can serve a more public and intangible search for a common ground of our identity.”
Ronnie Carrington is a Creative.
His transcendent talent is capturing light. He has a touch that not only accents beauty but tells a story. Landscapes become mystical fantasy lands. City life, a romantic play on seemingly insignificant aspects. Portraiture, a searching reflection of the subject’s soul. At the same time, embedded in each image is Ronnie’s character, non intrusive and humble with a sensitivity to people and events.
Every being is born with a talent. The onus is on the individual to find it, family and friends to nurture it, and society to accept and uplift. Ronnie found his at nine years old when his Aunt Dan (Constance Inniss) gifted him a camera. That was in 1957. A camera was an extraordinary gift in 1957. When we situate ourselves in that time period we get a true appreciation of the significance and impact of his life’s work: for in a Black upper middle-class home, to deviate from the scripted pathway of academics for an unconventional career was an act of rebellion, a rebellion that was challenged but eventually supported.
This retrospective reminds us that we each have a role taking care of nascent talent, in ourselves and in others; to pause that we may see the faintest ray, then help it to glow and grow. It is a reminder also to stand firm in one's convictions knowing the successes will come, and as we celebrate the achievements we also honour, as Ronnie so philosophically and poetically states, “…the fall that only success can break.”
This show captures the period 1975 to the present. 65 pieces for 65 years. Ronnie chose work close to his heart from his five preferred subject areas:
Sea Fans - images collected of visitors on his Art Exploration Tours.
Vintage – captures of a Barbados past that propelled him to fame. Street Life – candid shots of those in public spaces, some reflective of his trips to Thailand, China and Morocco.
Curatorial statement by Oneka Small on fine art photographer Ronnie Carrington and his exhibition at Queens Park Gallery.Barbados – The Other Side - breathtaking views of places few still see in Barbados. Right Place Right Time - photos of opportunity.
Although Ronnie Carrington is most well known for his artistry with a camera, he fuses his love of many disciplines for a multimedia approach to his art; similar to one of his greatest influences, Gordon Parks the photographer, musician, writer and film director. Music is one of his greatest inspirations and is equally as important as the photographs in all of the films featured in this exhibition. Street Life was inspired by the song with the same name. Pathways features his photography and poetry. His films blend image, music and prose. As a photojournalist, he works unobtrusively with specialised equipment to capture people in the public domain. We observe that in the more contemporary pieces the subjects are walking away from the lense, their backs turned to the audience, and we pause to ask, Why? Did the photographer see himself reflected back, agent and subject becoming one? Is the photographer more sympathetic? Or is the subject becoming more private as technology makes the world more public?
In Barbados - The Other Side, we are engulfed by the importance and grandness of nature. Ronnie’s landscapes are a uniquely framed view of the island. Even familiar views are captured with a different slant. Full of textures and tones, as opposed to houses and people. We again see the influence of another photographer, Ansel Adam who had a major impact on Ronnie’s work.
Ronnie remains on the leading-edge of his craft by maintaining his spirit of intrigue and wonder, with ample exercise as he hikes the fields and hills, learning from his students, and staying current with technology. As you explore the exhibition, challenge yourself to identity technology change and determine if it made for better photos or ease of creating?
Although he considers himself a sniper - he gets one shot to get it right - he quite literally has millions of images. A testimony to a long and illustrious career.

“The classes and demonstrations will take the form of a series of small projects leading to one finished painting.
Loosely based on botanical forms, participants will be given ways to free themselves from 'rules' and 'the perfect' and enjoy the process as much as the outcome.
The techniques demonstrated will be fun, easy for anyone and I hope even the real beginners will surprise themselves with the outcome.
We will be inspired by what we see, but not try to imitate it, rather use our limitless imagination. Experienced artists will enjoy the new processes and it is ideal for those who are feeling a bit stuck in a rut with their artwork.
There will be a field trip to Huntes Gardens to gather inspiration from the abundance of plant forms and colours.” www.nanikibarbados.com

Kesean Abrams ‘REAL TALK’ solo exhibition. September 25th-October 25th. Open every day. 10am-3pm
At The Old Spirit Bond, Wharf Road, Bridgetown. Hosted by the Centre for Hybrid Studies
Barbados Today News.
‘Real talk coming’
“Twenty-two-year-old Kesean Abrams is a Guyanese-born artist who is hosting his first exhibition Real Talk at the Center for Hybrid Studies, Spirit Bond, Wharf Road, St Michael from September 25 to October 25, 2022.
The former student of Parkinson Secondary School said that he was always involved in art and is inspired by anything around him.
“Art is in my blood, and I am inspired by everything around me, nature, people and even memories. That is why I decided that I wanted to name my first exhibition Real Talk as it seeks to inspire young persons about what life is like outside of the school setting. In this exhibition I want to speak to young men especially and show them how they can lead a more fulfilling life,” he said.
Abrams, who is also the holder of a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Law from The University Of The West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, said that since he has been an artist he has been a part of six exhibitions.
The most recent was at the Central Bank Crop Over 2022 Visual Arts Exhibition in Queen’s Park Steel Shed where he had the opportunity to live paint alongside some of the most revered artists in Barbados namely Shane Eastmond and Brandon Best.
In his career he has never seen the challenges he faced as problems but as opportunities in which he has learnt how to perfect his craft and grow his art into a viable business. “Since becoming a professional artist two years ago I have honed my craft through constant practice and relentless dedication.
“Every day when I come from work, I would dedicate eight hours to practising drawing and painting on cavass any idea that came to mind and over time I realised that the quality of my work had improved and I was ready to begin my journey as a solo exhibitor,” he said. Abrams is expecting a large turnout at his free exhibition which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
“I am inviting members of the public to come out and support my free exhibition as I have been working really hard on this and I believe the people of Barbados would thoroughly enjoy what I have to offer. I must thank Dr. Deryck Murray and the staff of the Centre of Hybrid Studies for the support they have given me in this venture,” he said.

Artist Taisha Carrington on her installation, the project ‘State ( of Mind), in Aruba.
“This installation of three Fuchsia coconut trees accompanied the ‘state(of mind)’ video. I wanted to play with this common caribbean/island identifier.
The trees are the conclusion to the performance/video. For me they are a joyful celebration of the new ideas of place cultivated in the performance. Three coconut trees breaking through the ceiling, one visibly emerging outside on the roof. Inspired by Moko jumbies festive appearance, tallness and mythical origins as a spirit rising above to see beyond and foresee danger.”

Sheena Rose (Barbados) who will be exhibiting at De Buck Gallery, New York. Sept 8th- October 8th.
“We are delighted to present Sheena Rose: Born of the Sea, an exhibition of new paintings by Sheena Rose (Barbados, 1985). Born of the Sea features 10 new acrylic-on-canvas works marked by lush sunsets, deep seascapes, and the artist’s signature, semi-abstract figures. Click the link in bio to learn more about the exhibition, which opens at our gallery in New York on September 8, 2022.
Motifs are consistently found across Sheena Rose’s artmaking, embellishing the painter’s gorgeous stories. After recently experiencing a tragic event, Rose painted to process her emotions. In Agony, the bird motif is especially pertinent. These creatures have appeared across Rose’s oeuvre, pictured in full flight, independent and content. Agony’s avian sits peacefully on the expansive ocean. It is rendered in pale yellow, the sun’s light beaming on its feathers. The pure ocean water which abounds might bring up a cleansing water, a baptism, an opportunity for renewal. Rose said, “there was a woman who told me, you go to the sea, you bathe, and you don’t look back.” Born of the Sea reflects a simply beautiful new chapter.”

The Barbados Photographic Society would like to extend deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
Gavin is well known to many of us in this group and for his stunning photography. He will be missed.
Photography by Gavin Hinkson.
I don’t use Facebook anymore but I had to come here today. We were the photography Bud and Lou, from the photo adventures to the falling outs. I learnt so much from Gavin through my years in photography. Even when I stopped using my Canon and just used my iPhone. I watched him move away from landscapes and become an awesome portrait photographer and ditch the fisheye for 85mm. I was always his hypeman on these amazing shots.
Anyone who was a BPS member from 2012-maybe 2015 would understand the symbolism of this pic. I’m sure Corrie Scott would remember well. RIP Gavin, thanks for the memories. My condolences to his friends and family.

Art!
name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.” Dan Rather
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
FUNCTIONS of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets
To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry
