The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas. The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies. I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.

I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.

I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.

Thank you for understanding.

Friday Feb 24th, Heroes Square, in front of the Barbados Parliament Buildings.

The NAG, a protest piece by artist Heather-Dawn Scott was installed on the plinth in Heroes Square in front of the Parliament of Barbados.

The ‘NAG’ is on the plinth. With banners “THE ART IS OURS”.

The NAG depicts our NAG (National Art Gallery) in dire straits. Still not open. We need our art collection to be in the public eye and not in continuous storage. Go see it and take take pictures and selfies and post them in social media in support of trying to get the Barbados National Art Gallery on its feet. Help the NAG get in its feet.

Please join the discussion on this link.

Heather-Dawn Scott wasin the heart of Bridgetown, near the Parliament Buildings Friday 24th, from 8pm till 9.30pm with a piece depicting our NAG (National Art Gallery) in dire straits .

All support for this latest protest piece is welcome.

And just to clarify a nag is an old useless horse.

NAG OUTING

“We are in dire need of a Barbados National Art Gallery (BNAG), a place to share ideas and discuss who we are and what directions we can carve out for ourselves.

Our sad, old NAG was feeling shattered and forgotten at being locked away and ignored for so long so we took him on a day out to visit his favourite haunts and to make some new friends. Then we locked him back up in the dark again.”

Sheena Rose’s solo exhibition “Earth Black Lipstick” will be on view from February 25 to April 1, 2023, at the Johansson Projects Gallery

(located at 2300 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland, California), USA.

A reception will take place on March 3, from 5:00 to 8:00pm.

Johansson Projects presents Earth Black Lipstick, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Barbados-based artist Sheena Rose. The exhibition runs from February 25 – April 1, 2023 with an artist reception on Friday, March 3, 5- 8pm. Natasha Becker, Curator of African Art from the deYoung Museum, San Francisco writes:

Combining representation, abstraction, and bracing color, Sheena Rose captures the lost art of leisure. Her paintings depict Black bodies in slow motion: playing tennis or pool, lounging around having drinks or perhaps grooving to music. Proper leisure time is what nourishes the human spirit.

In America, sites of leisure for Black people have more often than not been inaccessible and racially charged. While Rose’s treatment of color and flatness of paint capture one’s attention, it is the content of her work that invites further thought: What does it mean for Black bodies to experience leisure when to be Black in America is to live through a continuous cycle of grind culture, protest, survival, and exhaustion?

Art history abounds with representations of people in states of leisure across space, time, and place. For instance, in modern Western society, scenes of people enjoying free time were a favorite subject of Impressionist and PostImpressionist painters such as Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, George Seurat, Auguste Renoir, and so on. Leisure activities -swimming, reading, walks in the park- were divided along race, class, and gender lines. It was really only the upper and bourgeois classes who had access to free time and leisure activities. None of these iconic examples from the history of Western art depict Black people in repose.

Rose’s relaxed figures challenge centuries of demands for Black labor and instead, finds empowerment through leisure. Her vivid scenes, meticulously rendered in paint, invite joyful, playful, envious, and optimistic ways of seeing Black bodies. Conceptually, she shows that her subjects can do more in art and life than signify struggle. Instead, the artist represents Black bodies in vignettes and non-linear narratives. Her subjects are in conversation or engaged in leisure. Their active recreation celebrates the joy of mental and physical prowess. Beauty, indoors and outside, gives pleasure and relaxation. Her paintings exist in the world and are distinguished and exceptional for the tender intimacy and emotional depths they impart.

Sheena Rose often cites Monserrat-based author Yvonne Weeks’ book of poetry “Nomad” as a source of inspiration for her work. Week’s poetry is described as speaking to the “worlds we conjure and the inner world of the eternal wanderer.” I think, however, that Sheena Rose lives within her own rich interior and vibrant exterior world which enables and empowers her to reflect on her past and imagine her future.

*From A Garden of Hope* is a collective of 30 drawings that are part of a small herbarium of plants I have collected from @walkersreservebarbados, pressed and drawn as a gesture of care through careful observation or ‘inner seeing’ as opposed to the a history of ‘overseeing’.

Twenty of these drawings are making their way to the @nashermuseum today for the upcoming Spirit in the Land exhibition curated by @toschoon

The show opens February 16 and includes 30 artists from North America and the Caribbean. It explores how our identities and natural environments are deeply interconnected.”

Faire Monde(s) & ICF present Hold the Door

A conversation with artists and curators about making space to collectively imagine Caribbean representation in mega exhibitions

Our own Versia Harris and Allison Thompson participating.

“Faire Monde(s) in collaboration with ICF has invited a group of distinguished artists and curators to talk about their recent participation in the 2022 Biennale de Venezia and documenta 15. Both events, which take place in Europe and have long histories of shaping international discourses on contemporary art, attempted in 2022 to rethink and reconfigure ‘traditional’ templates of exhibition making. The participating speakers will share their experiences of the Venice Biennale and documenta, and reflect on strategies or possibilities for Caribbean participation in these arenas.”

Opening night reception of Ras Daniel’s exhibition “The Retired Slave Apartheid 1937” at NCF Queen’s Park Gallery. The free exhibition is open to the public. Monday to Saturday from 10am- 6pm. The current exhibition closes on Thursday, March 2, 2023.

“The National Cultural Foundation is lending support to artist, Daniel Alleyne well-known as Ras Daniel for his upcoming exhibition titled: The Retired Slave Apartheid 1937 being showcased at the Queen’s Park Gallery. The exhibition, which will open this Thursday, February 9 at 6 p.m., aims to reveal a sepulcher secret of Barbados history – that after abolition of slavery in 1834 social and economic conditions did not improve in the following 100 years, eventually fomenting the 1937 Riots.

As we celebrate African Awareness Month and delve into our past, there are two-and three-dimensional works, as well as installations utilising mix media and mundane materials to create this narrative. “The collection tells the tales of this dare nightmare of human suffering: hunger and attendant health conditions, horrific housing, child labour, rape, legal injustices and overall inhumanity,” Ras Daniel said.

The seasoned artist has been a part of several successful art exhibitions locally and regionally. Ras Daniel focuses on themes relating to slavery and Caribbean society, aiming to depict his stories through a combination of colour, texture, symbolism and found objects. His works are included in the Ras Ishi Collective Commission in Golden Square Freedom Park.

Other exhibitions he has participated in include: Roots and Branches, Crop Over Exhibition, Barbados Carifesta’s Team, Carifesta, Black History, Not For and Landscape. His art has been on display overseas in Tortola and Haiti. Ras Daniel holds a BFA from Barbados Community College (BCC) and continues his education through knowledge exchanges as both a resource and a participant. He is an art teacher/ tutor who continues to share, receive and give to his community.

The free exhibition is open to the public and all are invited. The galley opens Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The current exhibition closes on Thursday, March 2, 2023. (PR)” -National Cultural Foundation.

“These contour lines have shaped my life at Walkers Dairy in St. George, Barbados, grounding the work in the history of plantation society in Barbados. This is the land I walk in an attempt to understand its multilayered stories through a process of inner seeing rather than one of overseeing.l

Photo credit: Shanavas Jamaluddin. Courtesy Sharjah Art Foundation.

“Pray to Flowers – A Plot of Disalienation (2023), is a site-specific installation involving the steady transformation of the Bait Al Hurma [Women’s House in vernacular Emirati] courtyard into a sanctuary. The on-site living apothecary has been grown in collaboration with visual artist and researcher Yoeri Guépin, local gardeners, and the Sharjah municipality, with a view toward longerterm sustainability beyond the biennial.

The attached interior space features a suite of embroidered works mirroring the densely layered garden, a soundtrack of spoken words, titled A Blessing for Disalienation; a seed repository gifted to the public for growing gardens, a collection of reading material, and tea service for serving (bush) tea. A series of beds wind throughout the courtyard where the flowering and medicinal plants grown from seed are harvested for (bush) tea services for visitors.

The work references marginal lands given to enslaved people to sustain themselves, becoming sites of resistance within the plantation system. This plot thus acknowledges the regenerative potential of the biosphere and its inherent capacity for healing at the agricultural, botanical and psycho-spiritual levels. The work suggests future strategies for repair and thriving while investigating the role of botanicals and living plots as sites of refusal, counter-knowledge, community and healing."

NEIL GIBBS

Residence and Shop - Rural Barbados.

Another example of a residence upstairs and a shop downstairs. Some things to note are: the 3 door shop entrance, the woodwork of the top gallery, the chimney for the kitchen in the back, and more intriguingly, the octagonal design on the second gable. Also, the fact that this structure has 4 gables, not a very common sight.”

“Around 1990, I visited a lovely woman, Carmen, in Treviso, Italy. She planned a lovely weekend staying in Sirmione on Lago di Garda. Sometimes the weather was very misty given that it was at the foot of the Alps...the north end of the lake was Switzerland!

We walked, went to parks, museums, and ruins, and had wonderful meals. I was enchanted by this scene and the mist at the top of the Cyprus trees so I shot a few frames with my 1950s Leica M3 and 50 mm collapsible F2 Summicron on Tri-X film. My only mistake was to have it processed before flying home...the negs were rather grainy. But I loved the photo.

Fast forward about 15 years to my early work with platinum-palladium printing. Sure, I could make contact prints from my camera original 8X10 and 5X7 negs but 35 mm is too small. The trick was to make enlarged negs because all these 19th century processes are mostly sensitive only to INTENSE UV radiation, not visible light. Hence they are "contact printing only" processes, requiring a negative as large as your intended print. In those says I wasn't too up on digital techniques and one either had to make an inter-positive THEN an enlarged negative (slow and tedious) OR use a "direct positive" working film. There were many available up to about 2000 but, with the advent of digital techniques both in graphic arts printing and photography, those films quickly disappeared from manufacturers' rosters. What DID remain was Xray duplicating film...a direct positive way to make duplicate Xray images for medical, legal, insurance, or travel purposes. So, if I enlarged a negative onto it, it gave me an enlarged negative! BUT, the exposure times were veeeeeeeeeery long so dodging and burning were quite tedious.

A friend gave me some Xray dupe film which they couldn't (legally) use because it was slightly outdated but still worked fine! I enlarged my 35 mm neg onto a sheet of this and, with both bleaching of shadows and intensifying of highlights (in the neg) I finally got an enlarged neg with enough density range to make a decent platinum-palladium print. IIRC, that is Cranes Platinotype paper coated with about a 3/4 to 1/4 Pd to Pt ratio, exposed with a newly (then) acquired NuArc plate burner and developed in warm Pot Ox.

I think this may be the last time I used photo film to make an enlarged neg because, soon after, I got a good scanner and printer and have been making digitally enlarged negs ever since, with all the amazing image control available that way. I guess this image has a certain nostalgia for me because of the time, place, and process.”

My first five years in Venezuela, of a total of 38, were spent on a small farm, in the beautiful Venezuelan Andes. Every morning at 5am, I would bring the cows from the field for milking. In the predawn darkness, I saw lightning far down on the lowlands, nearly every day, and in the exact same direction. Little did I know that one day I would pioneer trips to take tourists to see the mysterious lightning. I went there more than 800 times. I'm proud to say that a Barbadian is probably the one who has photographed most lightning on our planet. Like six million other Venezuelans, I had to leave. Here I present to you my favourite image of one of the great loves of my life; the Catatumbo Lightning.

“A thousand thoughts"

#bpsTellaStory

This was shot during lockdown. During a time when simply being outside was a luxury. A time that strained people's mental health. So to be able to sit outside in the sunshine, even just to calm a thousand thoughts, was bliss.

8 years ago today this was my view from my balcony. And my story. #bpstellastory Sat 18th 2015. Our whole house closed down on seaside. Mad waves. Salt thick in the air. Sand and sea on balcony! Moved furniture. Claire, houseguest, in downstairs apt even closer to the sea is now closed in except for one window open to photograph from as waves, salt, spray and sand even worse down there. Going to be a mess to clear up. But great for photographs.

Sea egg fisherman, a dying breed. Tried to follow this fisherman as he was making his way to scramble into the sea by Ragged Point Lighthouse but there were just too many 'cobblers' to negotiate. These exceptional fishermen would enter the water by Ragged Point and collect sea eggs by diving without mask or flippers, only a maypole and net, and finally drag their haul of sea eggs onto the beach by Culpepper island. Here they would collect the leaves from the sea grape trees and form a cone to put the sea egg roe in before making their way to sell them at Skeete's Bay. This photo was taken years ago before the introduction of scuba gear that in my opinion had a significant impact on the sea egg population.

RED

At the opening of “The Retired Slave Apartheid 1937” exhibition of the highly acclaimed artist Ras Daniel on March 2nd, I had the privilege of interacting with the artist. The exhibition which runs until March 2nd at the Queens Park Gallery, features many multimedia works, utilizing elements of galvanize, barbed wire and wood to express the harsh reality of the lived experiences of the formerly enslaved up to the early 20 century. Among the other paintings still on display is VEXX RED, which is his interpretation and expression of the economic, societal and cultural influences that shaped the African descendants in Barbados and the region. Ras Daniel explained that the stainedglass windows depicted the historical influence of the Church. The outline of the windmill and the red, overlayered cutlass represented the ties of the people to sugar production. The deep and long-lasting scars of that experience are still visible in his depiction and while many families were able to own land and chattel houses, there was a bar across popular freedom of expression.

What a way to tellastory! Ras Daniel has done it well.

It’s 6 am and they want me to bathe in this cold water…...I did not eat breakfast as yet..…..and why all these people here…I not racing!!!! And worst yet, the photographer getting my bad side… Steups!!!!

Am so lucky to have this angle from my balcony which allows me to take photographs that show all of the paraphenalia a fisherman has in his boat. Casting net. Buoys. Oars. Sou’wester. Wood. Extra petrol. Pig tail bucket. Rope. Container with cover. Extender pole for his engine so he can stand on the wooden seats and see better for shoals of fish. Anchor. Every other week, we highlight artwork from the Barbados National Art Gallery collection, alphabetically by the artist’s surname.

Arthur Atkinson "Untitled (Abstract)“ c. 1960s

Mixed Media 49.5 x 53cm

This untitled work represents a period of visual experimentation in the early career of Arthur Atkinson. His exploration of forms and media in this piece, some recognizable and some pure strokes of expression, speaks both to the symbolism within Surrealism, and the organic nature of Abstract Expressionism. The work was donated to the collection of the Barbados National Art Gallery by the late Mary Armstrong.

About the Artist

Arthur Atkinson (b. 1945) has lived and worked the majority of his life in Barbados except for five years in Grenada. Primarily working with paint on canvas, Atkinson has also created mix-media abstract works, as well as installation works, and has worked in graphic design and set design, including designing the first four issues of the Caribbean art publication Representing Artists (RA) in 1993-94. Although not undergoing formal tertiary level training, due to a lack of programmes in Barbados at the time, Atkinson did study with some of the island’s established artists, including Goldie Spieler in the 1970s. "To Factory, Re: Storage”

2002

Mixed Media

122 x 143cm

“To: Factory, Re: Storage” is one of several works in Atkinson’s oeuvre that unpacks the role of education on imposing social hierarchies and parameters. The draw by numbers figures and other symbols of learning included in the panels of this work represent the often constricting boundaries of conformity and social acceptability that are imposed on children and that linger in the psyche well into adulthood. By including patterns originally seen in the design of Victorian era wall paper, there is a reference to the industrial era and its imperial focus as impacting the interpretation of these social constructs in a post/colonial Caribbean context. This work was exhibited in Atkinson’s solo show Personality Disorder Machine at Zemicon Gallery in 2002.

About the Artist

Ewan Atkinson was born in Barbados in 1975. He received a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art, and an MA in Cultural Studies at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill. He has exhibited in local regional and international exhibitions, with two solo exhibitions in 2002 and 2007. Notable group exhibitions include Infinite Islands (2007), Rockstone and Bootheel (2009), the 2010 Liverpool Biennial, Wrestling with the Image (2011), the 12th Havana Biennial (2015), Caribbean Queer Visualities (2016 - 2017), 2nd Bienal Del Sur, Venezuela (2018), Arrivants (2019) and Relational Undercurrents (2018 – 2019). Atkinson is an art educator and programme coordinator in the Studio Art BFA programme at the Barbados Community College as well as co-founder of Punch Creative Arena, an independent curatorial initiative. His work has been featured in publications such as Small Axe, Art in the Caribbean: An Introduction, See Me Here: A Survey of Contemporary Self Portraits from the Caribbean, and Island Bodies: Transgressive Sexualities in The Caribbean Imagination. In addition to the Barbados National Art Gallery, Atkinson’s work is in the public collection of the US Department of State. “

Artists Akilah Watts, Alanis Forde and Anna Gibson of A3 Design created a mural on the Lobby Level at Hilton Barbados Resort.

…………………………….

“Hilton Barbados Resort is dedicated to preserving the culture and history of Barbados.

With its stunning mural, created by talented local artists, our resort offers a truly authentic experience.

We recognise the importance ensuring that everyone who stays and visits the resort has an authentic cultural experience. This, coupled with the conceptualization of the mural, ties hand-in-hand with the vision of our General Manager, Jacques Monteil, who fell in love with the culture and beauty of the island. Jacques commented that Barbados has so much to offer with its rich history, culture, and of course, its greatest resource, its people.

Russell Watson of the University of the West Indies, played an integral role in forging a partnership with three talented artists of the A3 Design Studio, named Akilah Watts, Alanis Forde and Anna Gibson, to create the mural on the Lobby Level.

The vision of A3 Design Studio - “offering quality service and artwork to the general public for the purpose of beautifying our communities and preserving our cultural history”. “

Katherine Kennedy and Ada Patterson exhibiting in the exhibition ‘Here Comes the Sun’ at The SBC galerie d'art contemporain - Gallery of Contemporary Art.

…………………….

“The SBC galerie d'art contemporain - Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to present the exhibition Here Comes the Sun from January 27 to March 18, 2023. The exhibition, curated by Claudia Mattos, traces the origins of extractive tourism in the Caribbean through the eyes of four contemporary artists whose practices examine the colonial legacy of the region's agricultural plantations and service economies. The artists in this exhibition - Irene de Andrés, Katherine Kennedy, Joiri Minaya, and Ada M. Patterson - offer new points of entry into complex histories and struggles centered on the Caribbean imaginary and its commodification.

The first iteration of the exhibition, which ran from April 22 to August 20, 2022, was curated by Noor Alé for the Art Gallery of Burlington.”

“Several local artisans are honing their skills at our 10-day Master Class Workshops!

On Monday, January 30, the NCF team, led by Andrea Wells, Chief Cultural Officer, and Nyzinga Onifa, Programme Facilitator, welcomed the artisans to the opening of the interactive workshops in crochet and leather craft, taking place at The Bagnall's Point Gallery at Pelican Craft Centre.

Over the 10 days, participants will have the opportunity to fine-tune their skills as they gain additional knowledge and skills from Aliou Sylla, Master Tanner and Leather Maker; Lisle George Forde, Master Leather Maker and Stitcher; and Adama Diouf, Master Crochet Designer.

The leather craft workshop features both Aliou Sylla and Lisle George Forde. Aliou is a Senegalese master tanner, artisan of leather goods, and antique dealer who has over 30 years of experience and combines traditional and inherited generational knowledge and methods with new technologies in his production. While Lisle, a Barbadian, currently based in Los Angeles, has worked as a leather artisan for over 45 years. He takes pride in innovation, excellence in quality, and craftsmanship while paying attention to detail.

Taking the reigns on the crotchet workshop is Adama Diouf, an impeccable Senegalese crochet designer who reinvents crochet into a form of modern creativity by designing patterns and garments based on traditional fibre art techniques.

During the course of the workshops, the trainees will practice and complete a prototype of their own for conversion into the finished leather product.

From the NCF Master Class Workshops.

“Over 50 local artisans have increased their skill levels in leather craft and crochet at our Master Class Workshops

Participants took advantage of the opportunity to interact and learn from the master tutors while enhancing their skills and gaining new techniques to improve their designs and productions in leather craft and crochet. Last Friday at the closing event, the creatives showcased their finished pieces which they created over the 2 weeks.

Strengthening the link between Barbados and Africa, the workshops, spearheaded by Programme Coordinator Nyzinga Onifa were conducted by two Senegalese and one Barbadian master tutors:

Aliou Sylla - Master Tanner and Leather Maker; Adama Diouf - Master Crochet Designer; and Bajan Lisle George Forde - Master Leather Maker and Stitcher.”

Now this is a different vantage view of an art gallery. The exhibition ‘Colours of Barbados’ now on at the Boardwalk on the South Coast. Open 24/7. All artwork and prints are 48” x 48” by many artists who live in Barbados.

Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.

I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.

With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”

The Role of the NCF

The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.

FUNCTIONS of the NCF are:

To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally

To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government

To organize cultural festivals

Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.

OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:

To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work

To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage

To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains

To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms

To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
