I encourage anyone with a visual arts event to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for your exhibition, lasses, workshops, talks etc.

Let’s get the arts out there!

Visualartsbarbadosevents

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.

The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.

I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.

I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.

I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.

Thank you for understanding.

Llewellyn Xavier (b. 1945, Saint Lucia)

At the age of seventeen, Llewellyn Xavier leaves Saint Lucia for Barbados, where he is first introduced to watercolours while working as an agricultural apprentice. In 1968, Xavier travels to England, and becomes a pioneer in the field of mail art. He moves to the United States in 1979 to attend the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston. He later joins a monastery in Montreal to become a Cistercian monk for some time, before leaving the monastery, marrying and returning to Saint Lucia in 1987.

Xavier creates perhaps his most important works in 1993, titled Global Council for Restoration of the Earth’s Environment. The series of large collages, first shown at the Patrick Cramer Gallery in Geneva, incorporate all manner of recycled materials, including naturalist prints from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and postage stamps from many countries. They also include signatures of various world leaders of environmentalism and of a number of conservationists.

Xavier is well known for his oil paintings, characterised by multicoloured drops of paint applied to the canvas using a series of special tools. Looking at his paintings, it is clear that Xavier looks at the Caribbean, his homeland, as a source of inspiration for his use of color and light. His work often reflects his love for the environment. His most recent series, also collages, is titled Environment Fragile, and is meant to call attention to the destruction of the environment. Llewellyn Xavier is awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, OBE, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in 2004. His work is held in the Permanent Collections of The Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, The Ulster Museum, Northern Ireland, The Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto amongst others.

The artist currently works and lives in Saint Lucia.

TIPS FOR THOSE NEW TO FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY.

The Barbados Photographic Society is here to show the best of fine art photography and to nurture new photographers who are interested in furthering their art of photography.

We have a lot of members new to photography. All are welcome and we would like to help you show your images at their very best.

In trying to make sure you post your image at its best we ask that before you post an image that you check your images for clarity and sharpness, position of view, and horizons levelled.

Consider the value of the image as a photograph. Not just a snapshot taken and posted. We strive for the best at whatever stage of photography we are at here at the BPS.

We will be adding tips on creating the best you can.

Please feel free to ask any of the established photographers if you feel you need help or opinions.

The very basic things that need to be taken into consideration before you post are

1. Make sure your images are not blurred, unless you mean them to be. Hold your camera very steady with both hands. If you have a tripod use it. And clean your lens, specially with mobile phone cameras.

2. Horizons on landscapes. Make sure your horizon is balanced. A grid can be added to help. Or if you find you have taken the image and your horizon is not balanced you can use Snapseed ( a free app) or one of the paying software apps like Photoshop, Lightroom etc.

3. Subject and staging. Keep it interesting whether a close up or a long shot. BPS, promoting the art and craft of photography.

Monuments Episode 1:

OVERVIEW OF TRIBUTE

TO THE

BARBADIAN

FAMILY. Finalists Vincent Jones, Kevin Talma and Israel Mapp. Link https://youtu.be/s4laEOJPlIg by Sherwood McCaskie.

“In this first episode of Monuments, our attention is turned to National Heroes Square in the capital city of Bridgetown. The Monument Design Competition finalists share their designs as we await the announcement of the winner of that competition.”

WINNER OF THE MONUMENT DESIGN ANNOUNCED. A TRIBUTE TO

THE BARBADIAN FAMILY.

The winners of the competition Hugh Holder (centre) and Vincent Jones (right) collecting their prize from Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with Responsibility for Culture Senator Dr Shantal Munro-Knight.

The statue of Lord Nelson is to be replaced by one representing the journey of the Barbadian family.

Vincent Jones and Hugh Holder’s design We Loyal Sons and Daughters All was announced on Friday as the top pick in the monument design competition during a ceremony in the courtyard of Parliament in Bridgetown. The pair’s design earns them the cash prize of $15 000. The work traces the journey of the Barbadian family from the past to the present. Aspects of the National Anthem were used for inspiration, Holder said.

Noting that what is done today impacts future generations, Jones said: “Too often we treat culture “willy nilly” not understanding it has an impact in the future to come”. He said they both were honoured and pleased to make a lasting impact.

Second place went to Kevin Thelma who received $7 000 for his piece entitled The Monument To The Barbadian Family, while Sheena Weekes, Israel Mapp and Jamal Weekes placed third and earned $3 000 for their piece called Reunion.

A total of 11 people made submissions.

During the ceremony, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with Responsibility for Culture Senator Dr Shantal MunroKnight said Barbadians should have a sense of pride for who they are as a people when they see reflections of themselves from monuments and places of significance. She said it was important to celebrate and acknowledge the Barbadian family as a fundamental element of the development of this nation.

“[The 1813 Nelson statue] was a reflection of the suggestion of domination. That statue reflected a particular set of values, a particular outlook, a particular state of our country. The pulling down of that statue also said something,” she said.

“Independence is a project, we celebrate it on November 30th as a signal day but all of the things that we have been doing that we can look upon in the context of where we stand now are signals along that independence project. That we are saying to ourselves and to the world that we will no longer be defined by what that monument that was there represented.”

Chairman of the design committee thanked all the participants, stating that the competition was “stiff”. He explained that the purpose of the monument was to recognise the integration and building of families and emancipation after the horrors of the trans atlantic slave trade.

He said the monument also had to be able to withstand national and international scrutiny and be an enjoyable space for all.

CLOSURE OF THE BRIGHTON STOREROOM

“The Brighton Storeroom has decided, sadly, that the current exhibition will be our last when it closes on December 17th 2022.

TBS opened in November 2019 and has since presented work in a wide-ranging programme by over forty artists in thirteen exhibitions. Our mission was always to present challenging and engaging art by local and regional artists to highly professional and museum standards.

We survived the Covid pandemic, building up an inclusive, engaged audience and international following, whose enthusiastic support made our mission to showcase contemporary art within Barbados possible. We are genuinely grateful for this interest. We would also like to thank the artists for their art and everyone else who worked with us to make The Brighton Storeroom such a huge success.

Art will remain a key ingredient of the Saturday Market and further announcements concerning the new iteration of the gallery in 2023 will be made on the social media pages of The Brighton Farmers Market.

Our opening hours are 7 - 10am every Saturday and by appointment.”

Xmas Xtravaganza Art Exhibition at the Barbados Arts Council’s Art Gallery from Monday, 5th December 2022 until Saturday, 21st January 2023.

Jeena Chatrani Antilles Gallery.

Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.

I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.

With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”

Our Mission

To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.

The Role of the NCF

The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.

FUNCTIONS of the NCF are:

To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally

To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government

To organize cultural festivals

Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.

OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:

To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work

To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage

To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains

To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms

To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders

To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets

To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry
