Visualartsbarbadosevents

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas. The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.

I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.

I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.

I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.

Thank you for understanding.

On two weekends in February and March, 2023, participating ASTB artists open their studios to the public for “show and tell”, and potentially, sales.

Art lovers, both local and international, are provided with an informative brochure of the event (including a map to all the studios) in order to visit the studios either independently or with a guided tour and to interact with the artist. Barbados National Art Gallery Featured Artist

Every other week, we highlight artwork from the Barbados National Art Gallery collection, alphabetically by the artist’s surname.

Arthur Atkinson "Untitled (Abstract)“ c. 1960s

Mixed Media 49.5 x 53cm

This untitled work represents a period of visual experimentation in the early career of Arthur Atkinson. His exploration of forms and media in this piece, some recognizable and some pure strokes of expression, speaks both to the symbolism within Surrealism, and the organic nature of Abstract Expressionism. The work was donated to the collection of the Barbados National Art Gallery by the late Mary Armstrong.

About the Artist

Arthur Atkinson (b. 1945) has lived and worked the majority of his life in Barbados except for five years in Grenada. Primarily working with paint on canvas, Atkinson has also created mix-media abstract works, as well as installation works, and has worked in graphic design and set design, including designing the first four issues of the Caribbean art publication Representing Artists (RA) in 1993-94. Although not undergoing formal tertiary level training, due to a lack of programmes in Barbados at the time, Atkinson did study with some of the island’s established artists, including Goldie Spieler in the 1970s. He has exhibited extensively both locally and internationally, his first exhibition being in 1969 at the Hilton-Banks Gallery, and he has produced over 12 solo exhibitions, including at Zemicon Gallery, Queens Park gallery (2005) and Bridgetown Gallery (2010, 2012), and over five joint exhibitions, including the recent Punch Creative Arena exhibition with Ewan Atkinson, Æ : Arthur and Ewan Atkinson, in 2017. He has also showcased in over 25 group exhibitions and Biennials. In 2008, Atkinson was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award in the Visual Arts and retrospective exhibition in the Barbados Central Bank Grand Salle. In addition to the Barbados National Art Gallery Collection, his work is held in the collection of the U.S Department of State. In an artist statement released for the exhibition Æ : Arthur and Ewan Atkinson, Atkinson stated: “I started exhibiting in 1968 and my subject matter has always been inspired by Barbados and things Bajan. The familiar. My experience. Though my paintings have been representational, they have not always been realistically depicted.”

Pauline Bellamy talks about her much discussed ‘The Bag Lady’ which she created for the recent exhibition ‘Wearable Art’ at Queens Park Gallery.

“The Bag Lady was created as a tribute to women who make a gallant effort to show up for life in spite of the seemingly insurmountable baggage that they carry every day.

The aim of the installation was to evoke emotion and conversation and to bring to light issues that are important to women.

Thank you @thencfbarbados for creating a space for me and other designers to display their designs and to show off their creativity at the first Wearable Art Exhibition. Thanks to those who took the time to visit the exhibition and to those who reached out to me to give their positive reviews on the Bag Lady.

The exhibition is closed now but you can look out for my Bag Lady Conversations to be posted soon. A series of reels where women share their thoughts on the Bag Lady installation. “

More on Pauline Bellamy’s ‘Bag Lady’ from the exhibition ‘Wearable Art’ at Queen’s Park Gallery.

“BAG LADY CONVERSATIONS • The Bag Lady was really supposed to be a painting of a lady's bag with all of the contents spilling out of it. The contents would then tell the life story of the owner of the bag. The inspiration was however used to create my wearable art piece which was recently on exhibit at the Queen's Park Gallery for the first Wearable Art Exhibition put on by The National Cultural Foundation. On the opening night of the exhibition, as I was about to leave, my bag fell from my hand, spilling all of the contents onto the floor. God surely continues to make me laugh. Now to share my final post of the Bag Lady Coversations :

Selfie time with visual artist Heather Dawn Scott.

 Capturing moments with Denise Hinds-Jordan.

 Heraldic artist Ann Rudder.

My dear friend Tracy reveals what she carries in her bag.

Kim Butcher of the Okoye brand shares what's important in her bag.

A touching review of the 'Bag Lady'.

Carol Cadogan, the queen of fashion, shares her thoughts on the installation.

My friend Lisa shares her observations and impressions of the 'Bag Lady'.

A long time client makes a moving contribution to the Bag Lady Coversations.

The vocals of Madison Ryann Ward seem perfect for this final look at the 'Bag Lady' and the behind-the-scenes memories. Just so you know, I aborted my plans to spray paint the mannequin before the exhibition and left it with its blemishes because every 'Bag Lady' has scars from the battles of life and they are all beautiful. To all of the ladies out there with "battle scars" and a heavy load, this one is for you. Thanks again to the NCF for putting on the first Wearable Art Exhibition. Thanks to Oneka Small for inviting me to be a part of it. Thanks to my son Amani for conceptualizing the 'Bag Lady Coversations' and thanks to everyone who went out to see the installation. “

Barbados Photographic Society ACTIVITIES 2023

“The Barbados Photographic Society is excited to announce the activities planned for the first half of 2023 filled with events, workshops, talks and themes.

We will be sending out reminders as events, talks, workshops and themes come up but we wanted you to be able to plan in advance so that you may join us.

Suggestion. Why not print this and put this flyer on your fridge/diary and/or add to your events on your phone/iPad/desktop/tablet .

The Barbados Photographic Society held their first event for 2023 on Sat Jan 28th.

A Documentary workshop with Jim Chambers from Canada followed by a Meet and Greet of members. Jim Chambers Workshop

One presentation focused on his documentary work and the other on photographs taken in Barbados over a twelve-year period.

Jim began with a brief talk of how he became a photographer after winning a photography contest in 1967 that changed his life. His father was an amateur photographer and had a dark room in the basement of their home. At the age of eight years his my dad taught him how to develop photographs; it was magic to him and still is.

After the presentation Jim was presented with an award and a gift for giving of his time and knowledge while here on holiday to the BPS

Now this is a different vantage view of an art gallery. The exhibition ‘Colours of Barbados’ now on at the Boardwalk on the South Coast. Open 24/7. All artwork and prints are 48” x 48” by many artists who live in Barbados.

Annalee Davis soon to be exhibiting in ‘Spirit of the Land’ at the Nasher Museum of Art in the USA.

*From A Garden of Hope* is a collective of 30 drawings that are part of a small herbarium of plants I have collected from @walkersreservebarbados, pressed and drawn as a gesture of care through careful observation or ‘inner seeing’ as opposed to the a history of ‘overseeing’.

Twenty of these drawings are making their way to the @nashermuseum today for the upcoming Spirit in the Land exhibition curated by @toschoon

The show opens February 16 and includes 30 artists from North America and the Caribbean. It explores how our identities and natural environments are deeply interconnected.”

-Annalee Davis

………………..

“So I went to the the opening of this exhibition yesterday evening and what an opening it was... It was a celebration of art at its core but also a celebration of life, love, friendship, family and our heritage..

We were blessed... We were entertained... And most of all we were blown away by the work and the accomplishments of Ireka Jelani...

I have long been familiar with her basket work but her textile work absolutely blew me away....

Under the theme of creation vibes we were treated to an explosion of colour and talent which all but overwhelmed the senses... As we saw nature and our local plant based life... Very much life... Through her eyes... And she sees things in vivid technicolor... Looking at her work brings a smile and makes you happy....

I was also pleased to see on site merchandising at affordable prices for those inclined to art who have not yet reached the financial status of patronage but who can still enjoy and support through items more easily within the financial reach of the average buyer...

Most striking ...

Three pieces mounted side by side on South Western (North facing) gallery wall which were simultaneously a carnival riot if colour and cohesive complementary complex mingling of soothing patterns within patterns which begged a continous viewing to take them all in... Not the only things in the room but easily the best and most striking pieces on display for me... And if they were the visions of the light then the corresponding side (south west north facing) contained a visual reverse but still colourful exploration... A quieter more soothing expression on a darker base... And...

a room full of weaving which rose from plinths like a spectacular forest Grove reimagined which drew you inside to walks amongst the works... You had to restrain yourself from reaching out to touch (and some people didn't but its not beyond the pale to understand that a well made utensil will ask to be held and used and will speak to potential users... Am I being to fanciful? )

I've taken as usual a few photos of my favorite things... But again... As usual... I note the subjectivity of art, my own amateur status of art lover and that (of course) you should go see it for yourself...”

Antilles Gallery. https://m.facebook.com/AntilleanGalleryofArt/

Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.

I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.

With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

The artists of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery: Catherine Forter Chee a Tow, Cathy Cummins, Chris Richards, Dana Sikkens, Jeena Chatrani, Julia Seymour, Julianne Gill, Lorna Wilson, Mario Holder, Maurice Forde, Sian Pampellonne, Tracey Williams, Trevor Desilvia Curator Jeena Chatrani

Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”

Our Mission

To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.

The Role of the NCF

The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.

FUNCTIONS of the NCF are:

To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally

To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government

To organize cultural festivals

Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.

OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:

To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work

To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage

To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains

To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms

To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders

To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets

To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry
