The Teacher of the Year Selection Committee has narrowed the campus nominees to 15 semifinalists (10 elementary and 5 secondary). Each semifinalist was asked to submit additional essays, which will be judged by the selection committee. Next month, the committee will name six finalists - three elementary and three secondary teachers.

Emergency paid sick leave update

National School Counseling Week National School Counseling Week 2021 (#NSCW21), “School Counselors: All In for All Students,” is Feb. 1-5, 2021, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems.

Thank you, CCISD counselors, for the tremendous impact you have in helping students achieve success.

The Board of Trustees generously approved a resolution to extend the use of emergency paid sick leave in accordance with the Families First Coronavirus Response Act until the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

Human Resources will be partnering with the Office of Finance to make any necessary adjustments to employees’ leave balances retroactive to January 1, 2021.

CCISD includes student asynchronous days in 2020-2021 calendar In recognition of our teachers’ need for additional collaborative time during this challenging year, the 2020-2021 calendar now includes three days during which all students will learn asynchronously (remotely): Feb.15, April 1, and May 28.

You may view the updated calendar here.

While we understand that additional asynchronous (remote) days may inconvenience some of our families, we are confident that supporting our teachers during this difficult time ultimately benefits students.

Barring needs due to the pandemic or unexpected weather days, CCISD has no further plans to adjust the 2020-2021 school calendar.

Self-care Tip: practicing forgiveness When we hold on to grudges or regret, it affects our relationships, stress, anxiety levels and overall mood. It’s important to understand that forgiveness is a choice (and often a choice that needs to be made over and over). It is a distinct decision to give up anger, vengeance, resentment toward someone who wronged or hurt us.

When we consider that forgiveness is something that will help our own mental and emotional health it can often be easier to take steps toward making a choice to forgive. Forgiveness is NOT the same as accepting someone’s behavior and we may decide to end a relationship with someone even after forgiving. In addition, if we are in a close relationship with someone who hurt us, forgiveness is likely to improve satisfaction and intimacy in the relationship (as long as the hurtful behavior has stopped).

If you are struggling with this, be sure to remind yourself forgiveness requires patience and practice and it’s okay to go through the process multiple times to achieve the lasting healing that results from choosing to forgive.

The risk factor for Type 1 diabetes is a family history of diabetes. Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes are a family history of diabetes, being overweight, not being physically active, and a racial minority.

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes have the same signs and symptoms.

Type 1 symptoms usually occur over weeks or months while Type 2 symptoms develop over several years.

Symptoms of Diabetes include: • Increase in urination (pee), especially at night • Increase in thirst • Increase in hunger • Blurry vision or vision changes • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet • Feeling very tired • Acanthosis Nigricans- thickened and/or darkened skin usually in the folds and creases of the neck, armpits, or groin The campus nurse will annually screen students in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades for Acanthosis Nigricans to determine students who may have a predisposition to diabetes. School nurses are excellent resources for more information on diabetes.
