FROM THE EDITOR’S CHAIR: WHAT BOC 2025 MEANS FOR US ALL

Having just returned from the European Orthodontic Society Conference in Krakow, I am inspired. Through my involvement with the European Federation of Orthodontic Specialists Association (EFOSA), and by engaging and listening to excellent clinical and research presentations, the conference reaffirmed the transformative power of knowledge-sharing and collaboration. It served as a compelling reminder that by working together, we can shape the future of our specialty.

There’s something special that happens when orthodontists come together—not just to listen, but to contribute, question, and elevate the conversation.

As we look ahead to the British Orthodontic Conference in Wales, I feel that same sense of anticipation— not just for the stunning venue, but for what the BOC stands for: connection, reflection, and growth. One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s BOC is the incredibly varied speaker line-up. From renowned clinical experts and innovative researchers to fresh voices bringing new energy and perspective, the programme has something for everyone. Whether you're seeking clinical pearls, academic insight, or a broader view of where our specialty is heading, the BOC offers a rich, diverse experience that reflects the multifaceted world of modern orthodontics.

Education has always been at the core of our specialty, and as Nelson Mandela so powerfully said,“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

And in our world—of wires, brackets, aligners, and biomechanics—that change starts when we challenge each other to think deeper, do better, and stay curious.

This year’s programme truly reflects the diversity of our profession in

the range of voices leading the conversation. Pam Gill, Chair of the Orthodontic National Group, is curating a practical and inclusive BOC 2025 programme tailored for dental nurses, orthodontic therapists, and support staff. With topics ranging from vaping and AI to neurodiversity, Friday’s session promises fresh thinking and practical takeaways for the everyday challenges of practice life.

The 2025 programme has a lot to offer, this is one of the few events where you can move seamlessly from a deep dive into aligner protocols to a cleft management workshop, a discussion on career transitions, and a trainee-led academic session—all in a single day.

To those attending BOC for the first time—welcome. And to those returning—welcome back. Whether you're here for the keynote lectures, the late-night ortho debates maybe with a glass of wine in hand, or simply the chance to feel reenergised, this is your opportunity to sharpen your skills, broaden your perspective, and reignite your passion.

Let’s keep showing up and lifting each other higher.

See you in Wales!

The Complete System for All Indications

“I have been using the TOMAS pin in my clinical practice for more than 10 years and we now also use the system in our hospital and postgraduate training programme. The attraction of the TOMAS pin and accessories is both the simplicity and versatility of the system. To support the product I like the ongoing educational opportunities and support provided covering topics such as the importance of the pin design, the relevance of cortical bone thickness, site selection for insertion and when to pre-drill, and appropriate torque at insertion to minimize risk of failure.”

KNOWLEDGE-FEST

“How would I sum up BOC 2025? It’s the perfect combination of a stand-out programme, world-class speakers and a state-of-the-art venue.”
-

This year’s British Orthodontic Society Conference (BOC 2025) will raise the bar for dental events with its unrivalled line-up of speakers and thought-provoking parallel programmes, set for the first-time at the purpose-built ICC in the south west of the UK – one of the UK’s best conference venues in the country, says BOC 2025 Chair Dr. Guy Deeming.

As the only UK event bringing together the entire orthodontic community, BOC 2025 offers a wide-ranging programme, including clinical insights, research-based future gazing, Q&A sessions, and the opportunity to get under the skin of latest technical breakthroughs with BOC’s commercial partners.

Says Dr. Deeming: “One of the most exciting things this year is that we’ll be at the fantastic setting of the ICC for the first time. It’s an incredibly well-equipped, purpose built event venue. Plus, because it’s a campus-based experience, it will bring the whole delegate population together, not only for the conference itself, but also for the social events, meaning it will be much more collaborative, with more opportunities for networking. This includes, at no extra cost to delegates, a welcome drinks reception on the Wednesday evening and a fantastic street party on Thursday night, all in the same location. We also have a fantastic golf day on a world class golfcourse, organised the day before things tee-off.”

Dr. Deeming has worked closely with conference scientific advisor Professor Martyn Cobourne to bring world-class speakers to BOC 2025 – many of whom will be speaking in the UK for the first time.

“It’s always a challenge to bring in novel speakers who have sufficient experience and fantastic things to say, but I think we’ve absolutely nailed it,” he says, listing amongst others, Dr. Jay Bowman from the United States, along with Dr. Dietmar Suran and Dr. Marie Cornelis. Dr. Eugene Chang and Dr. Paulo Kitano, both flying in from Australia, Dr. Thor Henrikson from Sweden, and UK Drs. Simon Littlewood, and Richard Cousley – who will talk about digital workflows and its latest applications. Plus, of course, not forgetting our guest speakers from outside the orthodontic specialty – Professor Sophie

Scott and Professor Hugh Montgomery, who bring incredible knowledge and stories to amaze, entertain and impress.”

“And that’s not to say that all activities take place on the main stage. As in Birmingham last year, our parallel programmes will underpin the essential nature of BOC for the entire practice team. Our audience has become a far more sophisticated and considered consumer of educational presentations. With that in mind, the content of the parallel programmes is carefully planned. They include the very latest clinical techniques, work-life balance, health and wellbeing, business development, and practice management.”

Alongside the main conference programme is a comprehensive agenda featuring top commercial names in the world of orthodontics who will bring their expertise and latest developments to the Trade and Studio theatres, allowing delegates to get hands-on with technical and digital innovations.

Dr. Deeming is emphatic that anyone involved in orthodontics will find immense value in attending BOC this year - both past delegates and practitioners new to the conference. “If you are involved with orthodontics in any way in the United Kingdom, you need to be at BOC 2025. To those colleagues who may never previously had the time or appetite to attend, then this year is the best time to be there. Not only are the programme, venue and location first-class, the experience will open your heart and mind to how dynamic the UK’s orthodontic profession really is. Now we’ve come through the past five years post-Covid, this is going to be the year that launches the BOC for the next decade and supports the entire orthodontic community in the UK and beyond.”

He concludes; “How would I sum up BOC 2025? It’s the perfect combination of a stand-out programme, worldclass speakers and a state-of-the-art venue - there is literally something for everyone, whatever stage of their orthodontic career.”

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME CURATED TO REFLECT WHERE ORTHODONTICS IS RIGHT NOW

“This year’s BOC programme has been carefully curated to reflect where orthodontics is right now. Digital systems, AI, skeletal anchorage, aligners, and early treatment planning all feature in a line-up that mixes global names with respected clinicians from the UK. Whether you're fresh out of training or have decades of experience under your belt, you'll find content of relevance to your daily practice.” according to Professor Martyn Cobourne.

Professor Cobourne, scientific advisor for the BOC programme, says that the aim was to create balance. "We’ve tried to make sure the schedule speaks to a broad audience. All the sessions will be directly applicable to clinical practice, with some more focussed on the academic side and some more clinical, and they will all feel contemporary and relevant.“

Among the international names on this year’s roster is Professor Björn Ludwig, who will give the prestigious Northcroft lecture. Known for his pioneering work with mini-screws and digital planning, Ludwig is hugely popular across Europe and his talk is likely to be one of the most attended sessions of the week. Also making the journey to Newport is Dr Jay Bowman, bringing his unique blend of clinical wisdom and straight-talking commentary. A perennial highlight on the international circuit, he offers a unique perspective, drawing from his extensive experience of orthodontic practice in North America.

Professor Marie Cornelis will address two topics: retention and the application of skeletal anchorage. She brings academic rigour complemented by realworld experience and her talks are consistently clear, practical and thought-provoking. Whilst Dr Thor Henrikson will share his expertise on clear aligners and skeletal anchorage in the management of open bites. Dr Farhan Bazargani will guide delegates through a recent randomised controlled trial on interceptive treatment of posterior crossbites. This session will be valuable for clinicians managing mixed dentition cases or those working within the NHS, where early intervention remains a cornerstone of the workload.

The programme also features a speaker from outside the clinical realm: Dr Paolo Cattaneo, an expert in biomedical imaging, will explore how advances in 3D analysis are shaping diagnostics and treatment simulation. His talk will bridge the gap between technology and orthodontics in an accessible manner, even for those less inclined towards the digital aspects of practice.

The UK speakers are just as strong. Professor Aliki Tsichlaki from the Eastman will share updates from her academic work, whilst Dr Richard Cousley will be presenting on digital integration in practice, covering everything from diagnostics to aligner workflows. Dr Farooq Ahmed will present a session on AI in diagnosis, following the recent publication of his study. He is one of the clearest communicators on the UK circuit and always draws in an audience. Dr Sunil Hirani is also on the schedule with a personal take on invisible orthodontics and incremental improvement. His talk will combine clinical cases with reflections on growth, learning and technical precision, something he has become well known for in recent years and there

Beyond the main lecture theatre

What makes this year’s programme especially interesting is how it opens up space for conversation. Beyond the big lecture hall sessions, delegates will also have the chance to attend Studio Sessions. These are smaller, informal Q&As with headline speakers where you can ask follow-up questions, dig deeper into a case or simply listen in on what others want to know. Bookings will open closer to the event, and details will be available on the BOC website and app once finalised.

Alongside the main programme are several focused streams. There is a full-day cleft programme for those working in joint clinics or who want to strengthen their understanding of interdisciplinary care. There is also a strong programme for trainees, featuring handson workshops and exam preparation guidance. For nurses and therapists, the Orthodontic National Group is delivering a separate full-day programme on Friday, packed with current, practical content. Much of the wider content is hosted in the exhibition hall, including shorter lectures in the Trade Theatre and real-time demos on sponsor stands. The programme has been timed so that delegates do not have to choose between CPD and networking. Breaks are generous and the layout has been designed to make everything easy to access.

Come for the talks. Stay for the conversations

One of the subtle triumphs in the programme's design is how it facilitates team learning. Many principals bring therapists or treatment coordinators to BOC, and this year's format makes it particularly straightforward to share insights over coffee or lunch. The conference isn't merely about passive attendance but about gathering ideas and starting conversations that continue long after returning to practice.

Putting the schedule together has not been without its challenges. Managing diaries, coordinating travel and handling the logistics of international speakers is a full-time job. However, as Professor Cobourne explains, most people were very quick to say yes. "The feedback we’ve had from speakers has been really encouraging. They know the BOC is a serious conference with an informed and genuinely engaged audience. If you are looking for lectures that are relevant, well-delivered and based on real clinical questions, the 2025 programme has a lot to offer. It is one of the few events where you can go from an in-depth aligner protocol to a workshop on cleft management or a discussion about career transitions to an academic session presented by trainees - all in the same day.” He concludes.

60 SECOND Q&A WITH PROFESSOR DR. BJÖRN LUDWIG

Professor Ludwig, your work has significantly advanced the use of Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs) in orthodontics. How have you seen their role evolve in clinical practice over the years?

When I first started using TADs, they were seen more or less as a last resort- something you’d try when nothing else worked. Today, they’re part of everyday biomechanics. With digital planning and guided insertion, they’ve become more predictable and accessible, even for younger colleagues. We’ve definitely moved from improvisation to precision. That said, I personally use them a bit less now. I’ve become more selective and also a bit more conservative - sometimes the classic ‘low-tech’ mechanics still do the job just fine.

You're presenting at BOC 2025. Could you give us a glimpse into your session and what attendees can expect to learn?

Yes, I’ll be talking about combining skeletal anchorage with aligners - especially for complex cases like impacted canines. It’s a very clinical lecture, with lots of videos, practical tips, and real-life workflows. But I’ll also highlight that high-tech alone isn’t everything. We shouldn’t forget our roots - basic mechanics, handmade wire bending, the stuff that still works. So it’s really a mix: high-tech, low-tech, and honest, real-world orthodontics... with a few imperfections, just like in everyday life.

Your research often integrates 3D imaging and digital workflows. How do these technologies enhance patient outcomes in orthodontics?

Digital tools like 3D imaging have changed everything - diagnosis, treatment planning, force application. We’re more precise, and patients benefit from faster, more targeted treatments with fewer side effects. But at the same time, we have to stay grounded. Not every case needs a fully digital plan, and we shouldn’t forget the evidence-based basics. Sometimes, the simplest approach is still the bestand we need to be honest about that.

You've been involved in numerous international collaborations. How do these experiences influence your approach to orthodontic treatment and research?

Working with international colleagues is incredibly enriching. It opens your mind, challenges your habits, and keeps you humble. There’s never just one ‘right’ way to treat a case. Collaborating like this keeps the specialty evolving - and keeps me personally motivated.

You've authored and edited several influential books in orthodontics. How do you balance clinical practice with your academic and editorial responsibilities?

I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered the balance! But I really enjoy both sides. Clinical work gives me questions, and the academic work helps me look for answers. I try to stay curious, and that keeps everything in motion.

Your recent work includes the 'canine-first' approach for managing impacted maxillary canines with aligners and TADs. Could you elaborate on the benefits of this method?

The main idea is to simplify a difficult situation. By focusing on the impacted canine first - with skeletal anchorage and clear biomechanics - we can avoid bulky auxiliaries and help aligners do their job more effectively later. It works really well in many cases, but not all. It’s important to stay patient-centered, not appliance-centered. The method should serve the patient, not the other way around.

How do you foresee the integration of digital technologies shaping the future of orthodontic treatment?

We’re still at the beginning. AI, fully guided mechanics, custom appliances - they’re getting better fast. But they won’t replace us. They’re tools to make us better, not substitutes. In the end, good judgment and experience still matter most.

For those considering attending BOC for the first time, what would you say to encourage them to participate?

Definitely go. BOC has an incredible energy - it’s science-driven, not commercial, and the quality of

NEUROSCIENTIST PROFESSOR SOPHIE SCOTT PRIMED TO EXPLAIN THE SCIENCE OF COMMUNICATION AT BOC 2025

Neuroscientist Professor Sophie Scott is lined up to reveal the many secrets of human communication at the British Orthodontic Society Conference 2025 (BOC).

Professor Scott, the Director of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London (UCL), is internationally recognised for her work exploring ways people produce, perceive, and emotionally respond to human voices. Conference delegates will learn more about the science of communication and how it is so much more than a transfer of information, but also about conveying empathy and forming and managing relationships.

Professor Scott’s research into speech perception should have particular relevance for orthodontists. Clinician-patient communication is at the heart of good practice, especially when it comes to treatment

involving orthodontic appliances which can alter speech. For UK orthodontists working in diverse and often busy practices, communication challenges present daily; language barriers, neurodivergent patients, and people with dental anxiety all require an even more flexible, personal and nuanced approach.

There’s also growing recognition within the sector about the importance of inter-disciplinary thinking. As digital technologies reshape how orthodontists diagnose and deliver care, the ‘human’ side of practice - communication, empathy, and behavioural influence remain critical. Professor Scott’s keynote will speak directly to this balance.

The neuroscience of laughter— how to keep your patients smiling!

In her professional life, Professor Scott is well known for her public engagement work, including stand-up comedy and appearances on BBC Radio Four’s The Life Scientific. In 2015 she delivered a Ted Talk Why We Laugh. In 2024 she gave the Friday Evening Discourse at the Royal Institution on the science of laughter. She holds a UCL Provost's Award for Public Engagement and presented the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 2017 with The Language of Life, which explored the topic of communication.

GENETICIST PROFESSOR

HUGH MONTGOMERY:

HOW WILL GENETICS INFLUENCE THE FUTURE OF ORTHODONTICS

Distinguished geneticist and professor of Intensive Care Medicine at University College London (UCL) Professor Hugh Montgomery will explore how understanding patient genetics could offer new avenues of personalised care when he takes to the stage at the British Orthodontic Society Conference 2025.

Professor Montgomery, who is renowned for his ground-breaking discovery of the angiotensinconverting enzyme [ACE] gene, which influences physical fitness and endurance, will discuss how genetic factors influence craniofacial development and anomalies, while potentially predicting their susceptibility to conditions such as malocclusion. It is anticipated that in the future this level of detail will be used to inform early interventions and personalised treatment plans in line with patients’ genetic profiles.

His work ranges from the development and application of gene-environment interaction studies, to population genetic studies, artificial intelligence and climate change. He has authored nearly 500 research papers in journals including Nature, The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine and was co-Editor-inChief of the Open Access journal Extreme Physiology & Medicine. He is co-chair of the 35-country, 52-institute international Lancet Countdown on Climate Change, which reports annually. He has hosted television documentaries and appeared frequently across print and broadcast media, as well as delivering numerous lectures and talks across his range of specialist subjects. He has received 11 national and international awards.

Professor Montgomery, who is also UCL’s Director of the Centre for Human Health and Performance and practices as a consultant in critical care at the Whittington Hospital in North London, will be one of two guest speakers at BOC. His presentation forms part of three days of thought provoking days of lectures and discussion delivered by a glittering line-up of expert, national and international clinical and business

development speakers covering a broad spectrum of progressive topics.

5 MINUTES WITH PROFESSOR MARIE CORNELIS

“European and Australian clinical research findings, delivered with a French accent!”

Professor Marie Cornelis is presenting at the BOC 2025. This ‘5-Minutes with… session allows you to get to know her a little better in advance of the event.

Professor Cornelis, your career has spanned posts in Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, and now Australia. How have these diverse experiences shaped your approach to orthodontics and education?

These diverse experiences thoroughly shaped my career; they made me a different person. From a clinical perspective, working in different environments around the globe has sharpened my critical eye and broadened my mind: even in 2025, and despite the increasing level of evidence-based guidelines, the clinical orthodontic landscape is quite different in different areas across the world, as it is shaped by the local welfare systems and the educational background of the academic leads. From a teaching perspective, having taught in several countries has given me the opportunity to select the most favourable teaching strategies in each setting and assemble the best of all worlds in my present teaching!

Your research focuses on skeletal anchorage, digital workflows, and post-treatment stability. How do these areas influence the future of orthodontic practice?

I believe these areas are key avenues for the future. Skeletal anchorage and digital workflows have reshaped the way we think and plan, and now we all know that they are here to stay. By contrast,

post-retention stability, though definitely not a new topic, has definitely become a population issue, as about half of the population is orthodontically treated in the Western world.

Having practiced and taught across multiple continents, what unique perspectives do you bring to the UK orthodontic community at BOC 2025?

I bring some European and Australian clinical research findings, delivered with a French accent! (smile)

How do you think events like the BOC help shape the future of orthodontics in the UK and beyond?

Orthodontic meetings like the BOC shape the future of the profession, not only because of the clinical and scientific update they provide, but also because they offer the networking and collegiality which we missed so much during the COVID lockdowns.

What are you most looking forward to at BOC 2025 – aside from your own presentation?

I am looking forward to listening to the other speakers and to meet some colleagues and friends from around the world!

Why do you think it’s important for the whole orthodontic team – not just specialists – to attend conferences like BOC?

Attending conferences fosters not only knowledge, but also engagement within the practice.

If attendees take away one thing from your talk this year, what do you hope it will be?

I hope my lectures will help them to take evidencebased clinical decisions.

How does speaking at BOC compare to other professional milestones in your career?

The BOC is a large event, and usually well attended. I am very happy to provide my contribution!

In one sentence, why should someone book their place at BOC 2025 today?

Because it will be the best national (and perhaps international smile) meeting of the year!

5 MINUTES WITH PROFESSOR PAULO CATTANEO

“Tooth

Movement and Root Resorption: A Biomechanical Perspective”

Professor Cattaneo, your research extensively utilises finite element analysis to study orthodontic tooth movement. How has this approach advanced our understanding of orthodontic biomechanics?

Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) was among the first applications of finite element (FE) analysis outside traditional engineering fields. The use of FE for studying OTM was driven by the motivation of my PhD mentor Professor Birte Melsen, to establish a scientific foundation for understanding tooth movement - ultimately aiming to provide greater scientific credibility to the orthodontic

specialty. The most significant conclusion is that explaining OTM based on the oversimplistic notion of “tension=formation” & “compression=resorption” is fundamentally incorrect.

You're presenting at BOC 2025. Could you give us a glimpse into your session and what attendees can expect to learn?

Root resorption is an almost inevitable side effect of OTM. In my session, I will present the current evidence-based perspective of this phenomenon, and propose a biomechanical framework to elucidate its underlying mechanisms

CONFERENCE PREVIEW

Your work often involves integrating 3D imaging techniques in orthodontic diagnostics. How do these technologies enhance clinical decision-making?

Imaging in dentistry has evolved dramatically in the last 2 decades – arguably its impact is comparable to the introduction of X-rays over a century ago. Nowadays, it is virtually inconceivable to perform a diagnostic assessment without 3D imaging (e.g. intra-oral scans, and for selected cases, CBCT scans). However, imaging is just a tool, which needs to respond to the specific clinical need.

Your work bridges cutting-edge research and practical orthodontics—what do you think is the next big breakthrough on the horizon for everyday clinical practice?

The most obvious answer would be the integration of AI (smile). Yet, I do believe that even without that, a meaningful step forward would be the proper application of the existing knowledge on OTM, particularly our understanding of the stress and strain fields generated within the alveolar support complex, to enhance orthodontic treatment.

As an Honorary Fellow at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, how do these roles influence your research and teaching?

I am a bio-mechanical engineer by trade, but I strongly believe that research outcomes should be directly translatable to clinical practice. That is the reason why I always wanted to be ‘embedded’ into clinical environments throughout my career. These collaborations are to be seen as the direct outcome of this vision.

You've authored over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals. How do you balance research, teaching, and clinical practice?

Given my background, I do not have clinical experience. Having said that, I do teach clinicians. Therefore, the ‘So what?’ is always very important in my teaching. The statistically significant difference is only significant when it is clinically relevant.

Your research focuses on the interaction of dento-alveolar structures with mechanical stimuli. How does this knowledge translate into improved patient care?

Providing the best evidence-based knowledge to optimise clinical orthodontic treatment has been, and still is, the red-line of my research. At the end we do not move teeth: we re-model bone!

What are you most looking forward to at BOC 2025, both professionally and personally?

A stimulating conference, where an evidence-based approach is shared and valued by the speakers and participants.

For those considering attending BOC for the first time, what would you say to encourage them to participate?

Learning is never optional!

NAVIGATING TRANSITION, STRESS AND THRIVING IN MODERN ORTHODONTICS

Dentist-turned-coach Dr Sophie Acker brings a fresh and deeply personal perspective to BOC 2025 with a session exploring transitions in professional and private life. Drawing on years working in the digital orthodontic sector, and her current coaching practice, she will be providing practical tools to help clinicians find clarity, calm and confidence through change.

Dr Sophie Acker has spent the last 15 years at the centre of dentistry’s digital transformation. As a former industry professional, she’s seen how actual innovation has reshaped clinical practice, business models and patient expectations. Now working as a dedicated coach to orthodontists and practice owners, she’s turning her attention to something just as critical as workflows and appliances: wellbeing.

At this year’s British Orthodontic Conference in Wales, Sophie will present a session that explores the complex emotional and practical transitions orthodontists experience at key moments in their careers and lives. “It’s not just about implementing technology,” she says. “It’s about how those changes affect your practice, your team and your sense of self.” Her talk will be addressing the human side of progress. Whether it’s buying a practice, bringing in an associate, preparing for retirement or coping with personal loss, Sophie highlights the overlap between private life and professional identity. “There is no such thing as the work-you and the home-you. You’re the same person, carrying the same values and anxieties across both spaces.”

These overlapping pressures are something Sophie understands not only through her clients, but also

through her own journey. Having worked in corporate dentistry and led digital adoption projects across Europe, she has first-hand experience of highperformance cultures, tight deadlines and the kind of silent stress that builds up over time. “I know what it’s like to look like you’re managing everything, but still feel like something’s not right,” she explains.

Sophie’s coaching work has revealed two major pressure points that clinicians face: the building phase and the slowing-down phase. She has witnessed people overwhelmed by growth while they are expanding their practice, raising a family and trying to stay on top of everything. Another pinch point occurs when they are preparing for retirement or scaling back and their children have left home and routines are changing, they feel lost. These moments are when personal and professional transitions collide. What sets Sophie’s perspective apart is her emphasis on recognising early signs of stress, long before it develops into full burnout. She explains that many professionals don’t realise they are approaching overload until much later. Subtle indicators, like difficulty switching off after work, increased indecision, or mentally replaying conversations with colleagues, are often overlooked but critical to spot.

CONFERENCE PREVIEW

In her session, Sophie plans to highlight three common mistakes professionals make when trying to manage stress. Rather than helping, these well-meaning strategies often lead to more pressure and anxiety. One of the biggest pitfalls, she notes, is blaming yourself for struggling and trying to regain control by working even harder. Instead, she encourages a more reflective and compassionate approach to oneself.

A key takeaway will be the importance of understanding where your healthy growth zone ends and when you're entering what she refers to as the danger zone. The culture of checking emails late at night or scanning case forums while half-watching TV with family might feel productive, but Sophie sees it as a clear signal that boundaries are slipping. She also wants to challenge the unrealistic standards many clinicians feel pressured to uphold. In her coaching, she often encounters professionals who believe they must always be available, constantly striving and relentlessly on top of every detail. Sophie reframes success not as non-stop output, but as the ability to recognise when it’s time to pause and take stock.

Popular narratives on social media about grit and perseverance also come under scrutiny. Sophie points out that messages such as “choose your hard” or motivational slogans about pushing through fear often overlook the emotional toll this mindset can create. She believes a more honest conversation is needed about what real resilience looks like in practice. Ultimately, Sophie encourages what she calls “peaceful confidence” which is a grounded sense of capability paired with calm, rather than stress. This is where she

believes clinicians can operate at their best: clearheaded, focused and not constantly on edge.

Her BOC session is designed to provoke reflection but also offer practical, manageable changes that attendees can take back to their clinics. Sophie hopes delegates leave feeling challenged in a positive way, and better equipped to protect their energy while staying connected to what matters most. As a speaker, mentor and coach, Sophie also has a wider message for the profession. “So much of the industry is focused on team leadership or business growth. But all that rests on how well you’re leading yourself. If you’re not looking after your own wellbeing, it limits how much you can care for others and your practice.”

She hopes her talk will resonate across the orthodontic community, from seasoned specialists to early-career clinicians. “This isn’t just for people who are struggling. It’s for anyone who wants to grow with balance and stay connected to the reason they got into dentistry in the first place.”

Consultant orthodontist, podcast host and researcher Dr Farooq Ahmed to address BOC 2025 and will share new insights into AI in diagnosis, digital learning and the evolving identity of the modern orthodontist. Expect thoughtful debate, practical ideas and a fresh take on the future of the profession.

When it comes to orthodontics, Dr Farooq Ahmed wears many hats; clinician, educator, researcher, and host of the popular Orthodontics in Summary podcast, he has made it his mission to connect the academic and clinical worlds in a way that feels both practical and inspiring. At this year’s British Orthodontic Conference in Wales on the opening Wednesday, Farooq will deliver a session focused on artificial intelligence and its role in modern diagnosis. It’s a welltimed topic and one that speaks directly to the heart of how orthodontists will work in the years to come.

“AI is no longer some abstract idea that’s coming in the future,” he says. “It’s already here. What we need now is a thoughtful discussion about how we use it wisely.” Farooq’s talk will be grounded in recent research, including a study he led comparing the diagnostic accuracy of AI systems with human clinicians. The findings, published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics1, sparked discussion around the reliability of machine learning and where the boundaries should lie.

“The results were fascinating,” he explains. “There were areas where AI performed very well, and others where clinical judgement was clearly still superior. What I want to explore at BOC is not just what AI can do, but what it can’t do, and why we must remain in control.”

He’s quick to point out that this is not a session about replacing orthodontists with computers. “The tools are improving rapidly, but the value we bring as clinicians

is our ability to contextualise, to communicate, to empathise. That’s where AI still falls short.”

Farooq’s interest in accessible education has also made him a respected voice beyond the research world. His podcast, Orthodontics in Summary, distils complex academic papers into short, digestible episodes aimed at busy clinicians. Since launching it in 2020, he has recorded more than 200 episodes and built a global following. He commented: “In 2024, Kristos Livas’ research showed that reading peer review articles from the Angle Orthodontist were viewed on average 1,296 times, and by contrast average plays for each of our podcasts and hits to our blogs number between 4,000 to 6,000. That tells you something about how people want to learn today.” He believes that digital platforms, if used responsibly, can be powerful tools for professional development. “There’s definitely a risk of oversimplifying or spreading misinformation online. But there’s also a huge opportunity to engage with evidence-based knowledge in ways that are more flexible and inclusive.”

As someone who works in both primary and secondary care, Farooq has a broad perspective on what orthodontists face day to day. His career spans hospital consultancy, private practice and academic teaching. He believes that technology should enhance, not replace, the patient experience.

“There’s a real temptation to over-automate,” he says.

“But we must not lose sight of the human connection that defines good dentistry. Patients don’t just want straight teeth. They want to feel listened to, understood and cared for.”

At BOC 2025, Farooq aims to start a conversation rather than deliver a verdict. “This is not a lecture where I tell you what to think,” he says. “It’s a chance for us to reflect, share experiences and think critically about where we’re heading.” For those who have not heard him speak before, expect a relaxed but thoughtful delivery style, grounded in real clinical questions and backed by solid evidence. He will also be sharing practical ways to evaluate AI tools, avoid common pitfalls and apply them safely in practice.

“BOC is the one time in the year where we all come together,” he says. “It’s not just about CPD. It’s about

GOLF DAY

community. It’s where you get to step back, take stock and get excited about the work we do.” Farooq is also keen to hear from early career orthodontists and those considering research. “We need more people asking big questions and challenging assumptions. BOC is a brilliant place to start those conversations.”

Tee off the Conference at the BOC Golf Day

Looking for a way to swing into the conference?

The BOC Golf Day takes place on Tuesday 23 September at the world-renowned Twenty Ten Course at Celtic Manor.

With breakfast, a full round of golf, access to the range, club house and shoe cleaning, as well as a sociable dinner with prize-giving, it’s a great way to meet colleagues before the lectures begin.

About the Twenty Ten

Built to stage The 2010 Ryder Cup, the first course to be built specifically for golf’s greatest team tournament, The Twenty Ten measures a robust 7,493 yards off the back tees and has a par of 71.

With water hazards on half of its holes, the course has six signature holes and presents many more memorable tests and risk-and-reward dilemmas. One of the features of the spectacular course is its variety with many of the earlier holes having a links-like feel with long rough and greenside swales, before the middle section reveals the full extent of the lake-lined challenge.

A tough finishing stretch culminates in a real sting in the tail at the 18th.

PUSHING BOUNDARIES WITH INVISIBLE ORTHODONTICS

Triple board-certified orthodontist Dr Sunil Hirani brings two decades of clinical insight and a passion for invisible orthodontics to BOC 2025. His main stage presentation blends technical brilliance with honest reflections and practical advice for clinicians looking to grow.

Dr Sunil Hirani has built a career on doing things differently. With over 20 years of orthodontic experience, he’s treated thousands of patients and helped redefine what’s possible with invisible treatment options. As a recognised leader in lingual orthodontics, Sunil brings technical precision and a teaching mindset to every case he undertakes.

At this year’s British Orthodontic Conference in Wales, Sunil will present a talk titled Invisible Orthodontics and TADs-Atomic Habits! It’s a mix of clinical strategy and personal philosophy, built around his belief in the power of small, consistent improvements. “Over time, I got better by focusing on being just 1% better every day,” he says. “That applied to how I treated patients, how I used new appliances and how I reflected on what didn’t go to plan.” His presentation will explore how to manage complex cases using invisible systems such as clear aligners and lingual appliances, supported by temporary anchorage devices (TADs). It’s an area Sunil has spent years refining in practice.

As Chair of the British Lingual Orthodontic Society and an accredited member of both the European Society of Lingual Orthodontics (ESLO) and the World Society of Lingual Orthodontics (WSLO), Sunil remains at the forefront of clinical innovation in this field. He is also the only consultant-trained orthodontist in the UK to have passed the highestlevel board examination set by ESLO. “There are fewer than 200 clinicians worldwide who have passed this extremely difficult exam,” he explains. “It means your clinical work has been assessed by the most experienced orthodontists globally, and it drives you to maintain the highest possible standards.”

Sunil is also the recipient of the Maurice Berman Award for clinical excellence from the British Orthodontic Society. This is the highest honour one can receive for their work in clinical orthodontics.

For Sunil, lingual orthodontics is more than a technique. It’s a clinical mindset focused on discretion, excellence and precision. “Lingual is technically challenging,” he admits. “But for the right patient, it’s life-changing. Adults who would never consider visible braces can feel comfortable pursuing treatment. And once you master the technique, the results can rival or even exceed those of labial appliances.”

Delegates can also expect a detailed look at the use of TADs to push treatment boundaries, particularly in combination with aligners. Sunil explains that it isn’t about throwing fancy tools at a problem, but about choosing the right approach at the right time, based on clinical judgment and experience.

His BOC session will also be a candid reflection on the ups and downs of his own journey. “I’ll be showing cases where things didn’t go to plan,” he says. “Because that’s where the most valuable lessons come from, and I hope people in the room will see that too.”

Beyond his clinical work, Sunil is a passionate educator who lectures in the UK, Europe, Asia and the USA. His articles have appeared in publications including the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, the European Journal of Orthodontics and Orthodontic Update. He also chairs the Milton Keynes branch of the British Dental Association and maintains strong referral relationships with general dentists.

“I love teaching, and I love learning from others,” he says. “That’s what makes BOC so special. You get to share ideas, challenge yourself and be inspired by others who are passionate about orthodontics.” He encourages delegates to attend his session with an open mind. “This isn’t about a product or a brand. It’s about exploring how we can all refine our craft, push our limits and offer the best possible care to our patients.”

Join Dr Sunil Hirani and leading voices in orthodontics at BOC 2025. The British Orthodontic Conference takes place from 24-26 September at the ICC Wales. With world-class speakers, practical sessions and networking opportunities, it’s the UK’s premier event for orthodontic professionals. Book your place at www.bos.org.uk/boc2025 and be part of something exceptional.

The British Orthodontic Society Conference is the only UK event which brings together the entire orthodontic community. Hosted in the South West of the UK at the state-of-the art ICC in Wales for the first time, delegates can look forward to three days of thought-provoking presentations and discussion delivered by a sparkling line-up of expert, national and international orthodontic luminaries covering a broad spectrum of progressive clinical topics related to the science and art of orthodontics.

THE BEATING HEART OF BOC: MEET, EXPLORE AND DISCOVER

“With cutting-edge products, hands-on demos, business insights and real-time networking, this year’s exhibition at BOC 2025 is more than just a trade hall. It’s the beating heart of the conference experience and the best place to connect, discover and move your practice forward.” So says Dr Paul Scott.

The British Orthodontic Conference has long been known for its speaker line-up, and this year is no exception, and delegates can look forward to a line up of International and UK experts. Across the three-day event, delegates can look forward to clinical excellence, evidence-based lectures and real insights into contemporary orthodontic challenges. But while the lecture theatres are where ideas are explored, the exhibition floor is where they come to life.

This year, the BOC trade and exhibition experience has been designed to offer more than product information.

It’s a hands-on, face-to-face space where delegates can trial new technologies, compare services, ask the right questions and speak directly to the people behind the tools and systems shaping modern orthodontics.

Sponsorship co-ordinator Dr Paul Scott sees the exhibition as the true engine room of the conference.

“It’s where conversations happen,” he explains.

“Delegates don’t just walk through and browse; they stop, they chat, they try things out. It’s where relationships start and where practices begin to evolve.”

More than 60 companies will be exhibiting at BOC 2025, with everything from aligners and AI imaging to bonding systems, scanners, training programmes and business support. If there’s something you’ve been thinking about upgrading, changing or introducing to your clinic, this is your chance to explore it up close and without pressure. For dental professionals who rarely have time to properly assess suppliers, the exhibition floor offers rare breathing space. There are no generic sales emails or virtual product demos, just real people, real products and the chance to make informed decisions about what works best for your team, your patients and your setup.

To help encourage exploration, this year’s exhibition features a refreshed layout designed to bring delegates and exhibitors closer together. Smaller companies and specialist suppliers are placed in the high-traffic central area, surrounded by the main social and catering zones. Larger sponsor stands are positioned just beyond, ensuring no part of the space is hidden or hard to reach.

The popular Trade Theatre also returns this year. Located in the exhibition hall, this semi-open stage will host a packed schedule of sponsor-led talks, product demos and informal workshops across all three days. These are short, practical sessions focused on clinical and commercial problemsolving, from how to improve your photography workflow to integrating AI into aligner protocols. For those attending with their team, the exhibition is also a brilliant place to compare notes and make decisions together. You might find yourself discovering a new lab, debating a software switch, or finally finding the supplier which really understands your vision. Event co-ordinator Claire Joffe believes the trade hall is the most energising part of BOC. “It’s where the buzz is,” she says. “We want delegates to get involved, speak to people, pick things up and try them. There’s so much innovation happening in this space, and it’s all happening live at the conference.”

To make things even more interactive, the BOC “Passport for Prizes” initiative will return, giving delegates the chance to win rewards simply for speaking to exhibitors. Visit participating stands, collect stamps, and enter the prize draw, all while gaining valuable insights into what’s available across the profession. For newer clinicians or those attending BOC for the first time, the trade exhibition is also an informal place to network. Conversations happen more naturally when you’re testing a scanner or chatting over coffee. Whether you’re looking for mentoring opportunities, business connections or just want to put a face to a supplier you’ve only emailed, this is the place to do it.

Even if you’re not actively buying, the hall is worth exploring. Seeing how different companies approach customer service, training, and support can be a useful reference point when you’re comparing providers in future. While for those nearing retirement or considering selling their practice, speaking with buyers, brokers and transition consultants in person can be far more productive than any online enquiry.

BOC’s official app will support the trade experience by offering stand maps, company information, theatre schedules and push notifications about sessions or product launches. It’s your pocket guide to what’s happening and where and ideal if you only have a short window between lectures.

Finally, the social programme is also built around the exhibition. Wednesday’s welcome drinks take place in the hall itself, giving delegates and exhibitors the chance to connect in a relaxed atmosphere. And with lunch and coffee areas woven into the layout, it’s easy to make time to explore while on the move between sessions.

OPENING THE DOOR TO ORTHODONTICS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

Consultant orthodontist and educator Dr Naeem Adam is curating the popular “So You Want to Know About Orthodontics” (SYWTKAO)” symposium at BOC 2025. Passionate about mentoring and access, he’s on a mission to help the next wave of clinicians find their feet in one of dentistry’s most competitive specialities.

For those curious about what it really takes to become an orthodontist, Dr Naeem Adam is the ideal guide. With a career that blends clinical excellence, academic teaching and research, Naeem has dedicated much of his time to supporting young dentists at the very start of their journeys. At BOC 2025 in Wales, he is leading the “So You Want to Know About Orthodontics” sessions, designed for dental students and early-career professionals who are considering a future in the field. “It’s a session I wish I could have attended when I was younger,” he says. “Orthodontics can seem out of reach to many, and part of my goal is to make it more transparent and less intimidating.”

SYWTKAO presenters include some of the most respected and experienced members of the profession including Professors Jonathan Sandler and Martyn Cobourne, along with Trevor Hodge Their sessions will cover everything from how to build a competitive portfolio to what training really involves, and how to prepare for interviews. There’s no sugar-coating, but there is a strong sense of encouragement. “We’re honest about the hard work,” says Naeem, “but we also want people to know that this path is open to them.”

Drawing on his own training in paediatric dentistry, restorative dentistry and oral surgery, Naeem brings a wide-angle view of what makes a good orthodontist. He qualified from Newcastle University with academic and clinical distinctions and has since gone on to achieve some of the profession’s highest accolades, including Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Now based in both primary and secondary care settings, he works with

orthodontic trainees across the UK and Ireland. “I’ve taught on multiple therapy courses and been involved in consultant-level training,” he says. “So I’ve seen what success looks like at every stage.”

But his work goes beyond just teaching. Naeem is also an advocate for research and professional development. His prize-winning study on the personality traits of over 900 dental professionals was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and remains one of the most widely cited papers of its kind. He explains that it has helped him understand that success in orthodontics isn’t just about grades or skills. “It’s also about self-awareness, resilience and being able to work in a team.”

He brings these insights to every talk he gives, and BOC 2025 will be no exception. While the sessions are designed with students in mind, he believes there is value for everyone, including established clinicians who want to support the next generation. “It’s useful for mentors and trainers too,” he explains. “If you understand what younger colleagues are facing, you’re better equipped to guide them.” The sessions will also offer a chance to hear from recent trainees, creating space for open discussion about the realities of applications, examinations and career progression. “We want people to leave with clarity, direction and a bit more confidence,” says Naeem. “Even if they decide orthodontics isn’t for them, they’ll know what’s involved.”

Alongside his clinical and academic work, Naeem has a clear passion for mentorship and access. He believes events like BOC offer the perfect chance to bridge the

gap between different parts of the profession. “There’s something really powerful about being in the same room as people who have done the job for years,” he says. “It’s a great leveller. Whether you’re a student, a newly qualified dentist or someone considering a change in direction, this conference gives you the space to ask questions and make connections.”

He also stresses the value of building networks early. “I often say to students, the people you meet at BOC might become your future colleagues, principals or supervisors. The relationships you build now can last your whole career.” As for what keeps him coming back to the conference year after year, it’s the energy. “BOC has a real buzz about it. The speakers are top

class, but it’s also a very open, welcoming event. You never stop learning, no matter how long you’ve been qualified.”

SYWTKAO delegates will also be able to enjoy lunch together which is being supported by Align Technology.

Align Technology UK Ltd

Growing patients are the focus for Align Technology at BOC, providing a detailed look at the expanded Invisalign® system portfolio, specifically created for patients in early and mixed dentition, along with new digital scanning technologies.

Early intervention can prevent more severe problems or alignment issues, which could become more challenging as young patients grow:

Invisalign First™ clear aligners feature the same proven technology, comfort and discretion as the parent system, but designed for growing patients. This enables orthodontists to address the challenges of younger patients’ malocclusions, including shorter clinical crowns, management of erupting dentition and predictable arch expansion.

The Invisalign® Palatal Expander System: An advanced approach for early interceptive orthodontic treatment in patients with primary, mixed or permanent dentition. Unlike traditional, fixed expanders, which rely on mechanical activation, the Invisalign Palatal Expander System features a series

of staged, digitally designed expanders which are changed daily or at the orthodontist’s discretion. The easy to wear and minimally intrusive devices are 3D printed based on an iTero™ intraoral digital scan.

Invisalign® System with mandibular advancement featuring occlusal blocks: A new treatment option for Class II skeletal malocclusion in youngsters, while simultaneously straightening their teeth. The dual action minimises the need for multiple treatment stages, and unlike traditional bulky appliances, combines clear aligner technology with precision mandibular advancement, providing both alignment and jaw repositioning in a single system. The built-in occlusal blocks encourage natural growth while improving bite function and facial profile. Digital customisation enhances treatment accuracy and efficiency.

iTero Lumina™: The next-generation iTero Lumina scanner with its 50% smaller and 45% lighter wand is ideal for growing patients. The 3x larger field of view, 25mm maximum capture distance and innovative software enables a wide and deep data capture that increases the speed of scan and simplifies the capture of complex areas, including palates. Photorealistic scans and visualisation tools within the Align Oral Health Suite support education, and parent-child communication and oral health monitoring.

ENLIVENING THE WHOLE ORTHODONTIC TEAM

Chair of the Orthodontic National Group, Pam Gill, is leading a practical and inclusive programme at BOC 2025 designed for dental nurses, orthodontic therapists and wider support staff. From vaping to AI to neurodiversity, the Friday session offers fresh thinking and useful takeaways for the day-to-day challenges of practice life.

Pam Gill has always been an advocate for the wider team and as Chair of the Orthodontic National Group (ONG), she’s spent over three decades helping dental nurses and orthodontic therapists find their footing in a fast-moving profession. At this year’s British Orthodontic Conference in Wales, she’s bringing that same focus to the Friday programme, which she describes as “the most varied we’ve had in years”.

“This dedicated parallel session is about giving people practical, useful content,” says Pam. “We’ve chosen topics that really matter in everyday practice, especially for those working directly with patients.” One of the headline talks will be from Joe Bell, a speaker whose research into teenage vaping has gained national attention. “We see more young patients than almost any other area of dentistry,” Pam explains. “And vaping is becoming a serious concern. It’s important that nurses and therapists understand the facts and feel confident talking to patients about it.”

Also joining the line-up is Ed Calvert from Dental Monitoring, who will explain how artificial intelligence is being used in both NHS and private settings. The talk will focus on how new systems are improving efficiency, managing routine care and freeing up clinical time. “AI is already part of our working day,” Pam says. “It’s not about replacing staff. It’s about understanding how these tools can support what we already do well and spotting the risks too.”

Another key session is being presented by Orthodontic National Group Committee Member Joycee Rebelo and Oral Health Educator Sarah Haslem, who will speak about supporting neurodivergent patients. Drawing on their own experiences, they will explore how small changes in communication and clinic setup can make a big difference. “More patients are coming through with

autism, ADHD, or anxiety around care,” says Pam. “This session is about being better prepared for that—not just clinically, but in how we talk and listen.”

The afternoon includes a presentation from Dr Debbie Reed on career development for dental nurses, as well as a session on cone beam imaging and impacted canines from a postgraduate orthodontist. She’s keen for delegates to make the most of everything BOC has to offer. “My top tip is to check the app in advance,” she says. “There are so many great speakers outside of the ONG programme. It’s worth exploring talks in the main lecture halls as well.” For those attending with their team, Pam says it’s a brilliant opportunity to learn together and come back feeling motivated and connected. “It’s not often we get time to step away from the clinic. Being at BOC helps you recharge and come back with ideas you can actually use.”

Now in its 31st year, the Orthodontic National Group continues to grow. Affiliated with BOS since 1995, the group provides quarterly journals, organises study days and is a sounding board for members with clinical questions or concerns. Pam explains that they are there to help, whether it’s about CPD, clinical queries or just feeling part of something. “The BOC programme is one of the most important projects we work on, and we’re proud to keep building on it each year,” she adds.

As for what makes this year’s event stand out, Pam doesn’t hesitate. “The venue is stunning. The speakers are excellent. And for many of us, this will feel like a real change of pace. It’s more relaxed, more open and hopefully more enjoyable too.”

THE ALCHEMY OF A WORLD CLASS ORTHODONTIC PRACTICE

How to build a better practice business and grow, whatever the challenges you face.

BOC 2025 promises to be a landmark event for orthodontic professionals ready to reimagine what's possible for their practice. Among the key highlights will be an enlightening and empowering session led by renowned dental coaches and business mentors Drs. Rahul and Bhavna Doshi, whose insights are set to challenge conventional thinking and inspire real, sustainable change.

Their session, The Alchemy of a World-Class Orthodontic Practice, is designed for both specialists considering launching their own clinic and established practice owners whose growth has plateaued. With

decades of experience as clinicians, practice owners, and now transformational business coaches, the husband-and-wife duo are no strangers to navigating the complexities of dental business success.

Dr. Bhavna Doshi explains, “Our mission is to empower, inspire, and elevate people—to create positive transformations. This presentation is about unlocking fresh, entrepreneurial ways of thinking. There are only so many hours in a day. So, how do you maximise your time and leverage every opportunity? How do you bring your team along with you, excited and aligned with your vision?”

The Doshi blueprint is anything but theoretical. Practices they mentor often experience threefold growth and up to four times the profitability. Their approach is built on practical, proven strategies that deliver tangible results.

According to Dr. Rahul Doshi, their message will especially resonate with two types of practices: those that feel like they’ve lost their mojo and are stagnating, and those that are still energised but lack the structure and strategy to reach the next level. Their goal is to provide both with a clear and actionable roadmap to success.

Their presentation doesn’t shy away from the real-world challenges facing practices today. From economic volatility to increasing recruitment difficulties, the pressure is undeniable. However, the Doshis maintain that with the right foundations in place, practices can not only weather these storms but emerge stronger. Success, they argue, starts with clearly defined performance goals. These are then supported by robust marketing strategies that are aligned with the practice's vision and values. Operational systems need to be streamlined for efficiency, and most crucially, the entire team must be motivated, inspired, and genuinely aligned with the mission of delivering exceptional patient care.

Dr. Bhavna Doshi passionately emphasises the role of culture in this equation. “The one thing that gives you a competitive edge is the culture you nurture. It’s about creating an environment where your team feels valued, heard, and inspired to contribute. That sense of ownership and innovation becomes tangible—it’s something your patients will feel the moment they walk through the door.”

She continues, “It’s not about how sleek your practice looks or how many treatments you offer. It’s about the experience - how your patients feel. A healthy, empowering team culture becomes the heartbeat of your brand.”

Delegates at BOC will walk away with more than inspiration. The session is packed with real-world case studies, relatable anecdotes, and practical steps that can be applied immediately. The Doshis aim to provide clarity and a renewed sense of direction to help practice owners reignite their passion and accelerate their growth—regardless of external pressures.

Adding to the excitement, Dr. Bhavna Doshi will also be launching her second book, Dental Alchemy, in the acclaimed Lead to Grow series at the conference.

Following the remarkable success of her first book, Lead to Grow: Keys to Unlocking Team-Inspired Success in Healthcare, this new release will delve deeper into the concept of “Practice Alchemy” - the art of turning strategic vision into tangible results and everyday leadership into lasting legacy. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at BOC, and Dr. Doshi will be signing copies after their presentation.

For orthodontic professionals looking to rethink, reenergise, and rebuild their practice with purpose, The Alchemy of a World-Class Orthodontic Practice is a must-attend. It’s more than a lecture - it’s a catalyst for transformation.

THE AWKWARD ARCHWIRE

Because even perfect smiles come with imperfect moments.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported The Awkward Archwire and taken the time to write in and share how much you’ve enjoyed it. What began as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to my own faux pas has grown into something far more meaningful—a shared corner of our profession where humour bridges the gaps, and where those awkward moments remind us that we’re never alone in this.

In a world of torque, elastics, and ever-changing appointment books, it turns out that a good laugh is just as essential as a good debond.

“I just wanted to say that, although I enjoy my regular copy of BOS News, it rarely (if ever) makes me laugh out loud.

But I did have a chuckle to myself on the way to work this morning after reading “The Awkward Archwire.” In a job that can be stressful and demanding, it’s nice to know we can all still have a giggle!”

— A smiling BOS member

A few of you have written in—and we love that. So, here are some more one-liners, mishaps, and “did-Ireally-just-say-that?” stories to brighten your day.

And now, some fresh tales from the trenches…

Slip of the Tongue #1

“I once told a patient to ‘bend over’ instead of ‘open wide.’”

Slip of the Tongue #2

“A colleague of mine asked a patient, ‘Do you wax?’ She meant to say, ‘Do you floss?’

Facepalm Moment of the Month

An adult patient—let’s call her Susan—had been travelling every six weeks for treatment, always turning it into a little social outing with her partner, friends, or family.

One day, I noticed another well-dressed, elegant woman waiting alongside her,

In a moment, which I struggle to justify to this day, I smiled in return and said “Hello, you must be Susan’s Mum”

As Susan sat in my chair, she pointed out that it was her best friend from school, and she was six months younger than her, I realised the horror of my misjudgement.

As I heard muffled sobs from the waiting room, I pondered why I didn’t just say “sister”.

So much for orthodontists improving self esteem! Got a cringe-worthy clinic moment? A classic ortho one-liner? Something that would have made your registrar, patient, or nurse self blush? We want to hear it.

Whether it's from dental school, orthodontic training, or a long day in clinic—send us your stories, your punchlines, your 'please let the ground swallow me' tales.

Let’s keep laughing, sharing, and reminding ourselves: no matter how awkward the archwire, we’re all in this together.

Have a story or anecdote to share?

Don’t hesitate to write in, please feel free to keep names and places anonymous unless you have permission to share all details. bosnewseditor@bos.org.uk

I look forward to hearing from many of you..!
