Orthodontic conferences have long been a cornerstone of professional development and community building within the field. These events offer not only a platform for the latest innovations and research but also a space for practitioners to connect, share experiences, and inspire one another. As a young dentist, who attended my first British Orthodontic Conference in Bournemouth with aspirations of becoming an orthodontist, I can attest to the profound impact these gatherings can have.
Walking into the British Orthodontic Conference in Bournemouth the prospect of specialising in orthodontics felt both exciting and daunting. The conference served as an eye-opener, showcasing the diverse opportunities within the field and the supportive community that comes with it.
The networking opportunities were invaluable. I met peers who were on similar paths, as well as seasoned professionals willing to mentor and guide. The conference was more than just an educational experience; it was a pivotal moment that solidified my commitment to orthodontics. It reinforced my desire to pursue orthodontics and gave me the confidence to take the next steps in my career.
As we look forward to the 2024 British Orthodontic Conference (BOC), Birmingham, there is much to be excited about. This year's conference promises a revamped layout designed to enhance both learning and networking. The new format will include world class speakers renowned in their fields, as well as parallel sessions, team sessions, a Studio Theatre, and Trade Theatre offering attendees a more immersive and practical experience.
Moreover, the conference will feature an expanded exhibition area, and Saturday Sessions showcasing
the latest advancements in orthodontic technology and equipment. The emphasis on practical application and real-world solutions reflects the conference's commitment to meeting the evolving needs of orthodontic professionals.
Attending the BOC is a chance to learn from the best, share your own experiences, and stay abreast of the latest trends and technologies.
More importantly, conferences unite us in our shared passion for orthodontics and our commitment to improving patient care. The connections made and the lessons learned at these events can have a lasting impact on our professional lives and careers.
As we approach the 2024 British Orthodontic Conference, and the 30th anniversary of the BOS, I encourage all my colleagues, both aspiring and established, to attend.
Embrace the opportunity to learn, connect, and grow!

Guy Deeming, Chairman of the BOC Committee welcomes you.
I very much look forward to welcoming you to the British Orthodontic Conference (BOC) 2024 in Birmingham.
The committee and I have worked hard over the last year to reevaluate our offering to ensure we continue to deliver what best serves our delegates. One of the other clear aims for Martyn Cobourne, my scientific advisor, and I was to introduce a new range of national and international speakers to the congress, who have a reputation for their clinical or scientific work but may not have had the opportunity to speak to a UK audience before. This combination of unique speakers and a new way of interacting with the congress and our commercial trade partners is our core aim for this year. We want to build on success and create new audiences and a new delegate experience.
I'm very excited to see our Saturday sessions, which are our trade-sponsored Saturday, and our studio theatre and trade theatre projects. And of course, like so many others, I am looking forward to seeing friends and colleagues from across the country and world. 2024 is also the 30th anniversary of BOS so we will be celebrating that with a wonderful party on the Friday night.
We continue to offer the virtual conference element to delegates that has been so well received in recent years and allows those who may not be able to attend in person to benefit from the programme as well as offer to all a chance to ‘catch-up’ on what they may have missed.
I look forward to seeing you at the ICC in Birmingham, 16-18 October (not forgetting the Saturday Sessions on the 19th).

Infinitas Mini Implant Advanced Course 09:00 - 17:00
Over the years, the Infinitas course has helped many orthodontists to successfully integrate skeletal anchorage into their clinical practice, and received consistently excellent feedback. This new ‘Advanced’ course will take your knowledge and aspirations onto the next level, with a focus on 3D planning, complex biomechanics and palatal appliances including 3D printed metal expanders.
Commencing in 2024, this brand new one-day course includes lectures and supporting practicals on:
• CAD-CAM planning for mini-implant insertion, including the one-visit protocol (how to go from a digital model to both appliance fitting and miniimplant insertion in a single appointment)
• An update on advanced buccal biomechanics
• Molar intrusion treatment for anterior openbite cases
• Mid-palate mechanics for molar distalisation & mesialisation (protraction)
• Maxillary skeletal expansion
• Orthognathic applications
About the Course Lecturer
Dr Richard Cousley is widely regarded as an expert in both orthodontic skeletal anchorage, and in 3D software and printing applications in clinical orthodontics. He developed the InfinitasTM miniimplant system (in 2007) which is the most widely used bone anchor in the UK and currently sold in over 50 countries. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed clinical and research papers, plus two editions of his textbook: ‘The Orthodontic Mini-implant Clinical Handbook’. Richard created a clinical protocol for (palatal alveolar) mini-implant assisted molar intrusion and established the UK’s leading one-day hands-on mini-implant teaching course. He has lectured across the world on mini-implants and more recently on 3D printing in orthodontics.

At BOC2024 we are proud to partner with our nominated charities, Kidscape and BOSF. Each were chosen for their remarkable contributions and alignment with our values of community support and social responsibility.
Kidscape is an award-winning bullying prevention charity. Established in 1985, they support children and their families across England and Wales to challenge bullying and to have happy, healthy relationships. Their vision is for all children to grow up in supportive communities safe from bullying and harm.
Their mission is to provide practical support, training, and advice to challenge bullying and protect young lives.
The BOSF promotes improved patient care by supporting the highest standards of research and teaching in orthodontics. It aims to ensure that the specialty of orthodontics continues to grow and flourish, enhancing people’s lives by helping them to smile with confidence. To achieve this, the Foundation plans to promote research into better prevention, care of facial deformity and dental malocclusion as well as encouraging excellent teaching. This will ensure that orthodontists are inspired, well-informed, caring, valued and responsible.
When you register for BOC2024 you will be prompted to leave a donation for one or both of these important charities. This can be of the set amount per person as suggested but if you wish to offer more support there is a field where you can choose any amount you wish.
Not to worry - you can log back in with your email and confirmation code and navigate to the donations option and add to your booking.
We thank all our delegates in advance for their support of these two important initiatives.
As you have come to expect at the largest conference in the UK dedicated to orthodontics, BOC2024 is being well supported by our trade partners and friends. They will be on hand throughout conference to share the latest developments and improvements across orthodontics, business and related disciplines.
To allow attendees to make best use of their time, here we include an exhibition floor plan so you can plan who you would like to speak to.
BOC2024 is conveniently located at the ICC, Centenary Square – in the heart of Birmingham. With 90% of the UK within a 4 hour drive time of the ICC, most of our visitors enjoy the option of either travelling home after the event, or remaining in Birmingham overnight –whichever’s more convenient.
Birmingham is easily accessible by plane, rail, tram and car.
By Plane: The nearest airport is Birmingham Airport which is the only UK airport with a train station connected to the terminal, which means it takes just a ten-minute train ride to get into Birmingham New Street. If you’d prefer to jump in a taxi, you’ll find a rank directly outside the airport.
By Train: If you’re jumping on the train you’ll find three stations to choose from, all in the city centre, and all just a short walk from the ICC with New Street Station the closest.Birmingham New Street is well connected with train services in and out to London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Nottingham and Leicester to name a few.
For more information on rail services, train times and tickets, please visit the National Rail Enquiries website: www.nationalrail.co.uk
By Tram: There is also a tram network that connects Birmingham to Wolverhampton, which stops at Centenary Square, just outside the ICC.
By Car: If you’re driving to the ICC, you’ll have no problems finding us as Birmingham is at the heart of the UK’s motorway networks, close to the M6, M5 and M42. And when you get here, you’ll find parking’s a walk in the park thanks to the thousands of spaces near to our venue. Our closest spaces are at our sister venue Utilita Arena Birmingham (King Edward’s Road, B1 2AA). Mobile payments can be made upon arrival at the Arena car park via www.parkjockey.com/pay, quoting location code 5020.
Visitors arriving by car will need to be aware of Birmingham's Clean Air Zone. The ICC and associated visitor car parks are located within this area. Daily charges apply to vehicles entering the zone which do not comply with the zone's criteria.
Away from the orthodontics and networking with colleagues, there is plenty to do in the second city.
Birmingham is a vibrant shopping destination with bustling high streets and indoor centres housing your favourite fashion, beauty, home, and electronic stores. The Bullring and Grand Central takes centre stage as Birmingham's largest shopping centre. This architectural marvel, featuring the iconic Selfridges Birmingham building, has become synonymous with Birmingham's retail resurgence. Boasting over 160 shops, including one of only four Selfridges in the world, the Bullring offers a diverse and comprehensive shopping experience.
Birmingham, birthplace of heavy metal music, holds a legendary status in the annals of rock history. It was here, in the industrial heartland of England, that bands like Black Sabbath forged the thunderous sound that would define the genre. With its gritty streets and working-class ethos, Birmingham provided the perfect backdrop for the raw energy and rebellious spirit of heavy metal to emerge. From the iconic riffs of Tony Iommi to the haunting vocals of Ozzy Osbourne, the city's influence reverberates through generations of headbangers worldwide. Birmingham remains a pilgrimage site for metal enthusiasts, honouring its unparalleled contribution to music.
Birmingham famously has more canals than Venice. What better way to explore the city and surrounding region than via the historical canals – all 313 miles of them to be precise. Start off in the city centre and take a narrowboat tour along the outskirts of Birmingham, or why not navigate the locks for yourselves whilst taking in the sights along the West Midlands canals.
