VINEYARD

The Val d’Orcia lies inland at the meeting point of Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria With vines planted between 400-620 metres above sea level, there is a dramatic change in temperature between night and day, ensuring the grapes retain the everimportant acidity that balances these bold, broody and complex wines

When Franchetti first arrived in the 1980s, he purchased 200 hectares of woodland After investigation into the most interesting and suitable plots, he planted 23 hectares to vines From the beginning, the estate has followed organic and biodynamic practices Although not certified, the estate works in a conscientious and environmentally-focused manner.

WINEMAKING

With a microscopic inspection of terroir, the team identify and vinifies 55 individual cuvées They apply the same winemaking to all red wines: fermentation in stainless steel, 6-8 months in oak barrel, with a further 12 months in cement.

The real magic enters during the blending process With 55 cuvées to play with, they aim to make six key wines each year. Three single vineyard campi: which shine a light on Cabernet Franc grown across three different elevations and soil types; Palazzi is a blend of the best Merlot grown across the estate; and Le Cupole is the Bordelais equivalent of a second wine with a majority Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and others. The grand vin, Trinoro, is the top selection of grapes from across the estate, the blend changing year on year, but always with a Merlot majority To give their flagship wine the time it deserves, it is released with another year in bottle The 2021 vintage was the first made by Benjamin Franchetti, making this an extra special release.

Benjamin worked closely alongside his father for many years and is accompanied and advised by the skilled winemakers Lorenzo Fornaini and Calogero Portanesse With a PHD in mechanical engineering and a keen eye for detail, he has brought some subtle changes to the estate, such as a new and much gentler press and de-stemming machine

In the words of Tenuta di Trinoro,

“The year 2022 presented itself as one of the driest in recent times, following the already arid and challenging 2021 However, our vines reduced their vigour to conserve energy, in memory of the previous year

Work in the vineyard was meticulous, particularly in managing the canopy a necessary practice also for the selection of the bunches which followed In fact, all vineyards were relieved of excess weight, not so much to seek concentration as to help the plant bring its few bunches to ripeness, given the scarce water resources.

At first glance, picking seemed to be anticipated compared to previous harvests, but it then slowed down due to continuous rainfalls: the amount of water normally spread out over several months was concentrated in a few heavy downpours in September The climate during the last ripening phase of the grapes distinctly influenced this vintage, with vertical wines showing freshness and bold bouquets with crisp, fruity notes. The Merlot was brought to the cellar at the end of September, followed by the Cabernet Franc The later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot reached an incredible maturity, surprisingly achieved already in early October As always, picking was managed with a radical parcelization of our vineyards, bringing 50 separate parcels into the cellar all hand-harvested ”
