CHRISTMAS

CHRISTMAS 2025

Christmas is always among most people’s favourite time of year — a time of carols and rejoicing, but also a time for family and friends at the end of an often busy and hectic year. It’s also the season for entertaining, which means good food, good company and, most importantly, good wine!

Our 2025 Christmas brochure is full of truly memorable wines, which will add immense enjoyment to all festive occasions. The brochure itself is a visual masterpiece, and the photographs were taken on a beautiful sunny August day at our Edinburgh office, based at the impressive Oxenfoord Castle. The grand formal rooms brought a touch of wonderment and a festive atmosphere — a little surreal considering it was 25 degrees outside!

As for the contents, you’ll find a condensed selection of quintessential wines to cover all your needs throughout the season — from big events and social gatherings to an extra special gift, or that great wine to make your Christmas lunch all the more memorable.

Included is our ever-popular Own Label range, which provides household staples that are perfect for the festive season. This year, the range has been revamped to display the new Royal Warrants to HM The King, but also HM The Queen (we are honoured to be the only wine merchant to receive this prestigious recognition), and show the fresh new livery. As always, these wines showcase a “best in class” example of what these appellations can produce at a very reasonable price.

We also have a great selection of larger format bottles to keep the wine flowing as you celebrate in style — always very popular this time of year, they add a sense of theatre to many a gathering! Meanwhile, our Mixed Cases will cover most eventualities at various price points, and make for thoughtful gifts.

This year’s brochure includes articles written by our Scottish team highlighting a few festive offers. There’s also what we expect will be a very popular section

of very special “Fine Wines” selected by our Head of Broking, Gary Owen. To finish, there is a section on sweet wines, designed not only for Christmas pudding, but the cheeseboard as well.

Lastly, we have taken on distribution of a very famous liqueur, known to many golfers around the UK — the legendary Wolfschmidt Kümmel. This delicious liqueur has been a staple in my house since I was a young boy. Produced from caraway seeds, it is unctuously herbal with a lovely sweetness, best served straight from the freezer… do try some, it’s gorgeous!

A quick word about our warehouse teams and drivers, of whom we are very proud. The unseen heroes of the season, they process orders efficiently and are out in all weathers, ensuring your delivery reaches you in a timely fashion. We aim to deliver directly to your (or your recipient’s) doorstep, making the process as easy as possible for you.

Throughout November we’ll be hosting Christmas tastings at venues across the country: in London, Leeds, Edinburgh, Glasgow and our Newmarket and Ayr shops. You’ll get to taste most of the wines from this brochure and speak with our knowledgeable staff. Please find full details at the back of this publication. Meanwhile, our online Christmas Hub showcases our full festive offering, with a personal touch from our team on request.

Finally, I’d like to thank you for your continued support over the past year. If you’re looking for personalised recommendations, advice, or gifts, please contact our team, who are always on hand to help.

Wishing all of you a very happy and peaceful Christmas.

LANG MAY YER BUBBLES FIZZ

Champagne is undoubtedly special, but it is not the only choice when you’re looking to impress or spoil yourself.

No other drink encapsulates the festive period quite like a great bottle of sparkling wine. Whether it’s Cava, Crémant or Champagne, popping a cork on Christmas morning or at the bells on Hogmanay instantly creates that feeling of celebration. I keep the house well stocked throughout the holiday season — with family visits and a big party for friends and neighbours, we need quite a few bottles to keep us going, not forgetting a special magnum to accompany the present opening on the big day!

With so much choice it’s sometimes hard to know what to go for, so I’ve chosen four of my favourites to save you the thinking time: a fabulous Prosecco and Cava for parties or a midweek glass, a stunning Crémant that offers a bit of luxury on a budget and an English sparkling wine from one of the best in the business!

My first pick is the wonderful Sylvoz Prosecco from Le Colture. Owned and run by the Ruggeri family, they can trace their winemaking history in the area back to the 1500s. On top of this wealth of experience, the winery is based in the village of Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene, right in the heart of the region and in amongst the finest vineyards; how could they fail to make special wines? This is a particular favourite of mine as it’s a Brut, which is unusual for Prosecco. This means it’s not too sweet and it’s full of floral aromas and flavours of conference pear and ripe red apple — hallmarks of the best Prosecco.

A nice pink fizz is always a winner, and we’ve recently added the perfect bottle to our portfolio. Cava Joan Sardà Garnacha Rosat Brut 2022 is

produced by a family-run winery in the hills above Barcelona. Made with 100% organically grown Garnacha, the grapes are crushed and briefly left on the skins to extract just the right amount of colour. The wine is then aged for 20 months, which gives extra layers of complexity and a fine, sherbet-y mousse. It’s surprisingly elegant with a refreshing finish — the ideal pairing for a classic prawn cocktail.

After spending years in the shadow of Champagne, Crémant is finally being recognised as a quality sparkler. Made using the same method as Champagne but from one of eight different regions of France, the potential for quality is obvious and many examples are the equal of more illustrious bottles. While Tissot-Maire make a lovely Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay), I feel their Blanc de Noirs is marginally the stronger of the two wines. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir, this is clean, rich and fruit-forward, ideal as an aperitif but also the perfect partner for a light, citrussy crab starter on Christmas Day.

Champagne is undoubtedly special, but it is not the only choice when you’re looking to impress or spoil yourself. Breaky Bottom owner Peter Hall was a hugely significant figure in the English wine industry and a pioneer, having planted his first vineyard on the South Downs way back in 1974. Dedicated to his godmother, the brilliantly named Breaky Bottom Cuvée Marraine Pooks Brut 2016 is made from 100% Seyval Blanc grown on flinty, chalkrich soils, just two miles from the English Channel. Extended lees ageing has endowed the wine with impressive complexity and texture, it is excellent when served with smoked salmon canapés and it will grace your lavish Christmas dinner with its versatility. A seriously rare treat as only 2088 bottles were produced!

CHRISTMAS WITH CLAN DAVIDSON

Without doubt, one of the most difficult decisions of the year appears around mid-December, when we all gear up for that short period of festiveness, and ponder existential topics such as world peace, good will to all men and which case of wine we should bring to the family gathering.

Christmas has barely changed since my first memories of my mother’s Yuletide ‘extravaganzas’. This is no exaggeration. She was a remarkable cook and a hard festive act to follow: she’d make wonderful hearty suppers on Christmas Eve, pilaf or fricassée on Boxing Day, and a Christmas roast dinner in which, for one day only, she would swap the simplicity of three or four components of our everyday meals for the clutter and confusion of a plate packed with as many proteins, vegetables and sauces as grapes permitted in Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge! Go on… count them! I now continue the tradition, with all the stress and madness that comes with it, and take over during Christmastime. But wine is a more relaxed affair — although equally important — and hopefully something I am more versed in!

Aperitivos are first up. Tunella have been a great favourite of both staff and customers of C&B throughout their long relationship with us. Their Pinot Grigio from northeast Italy’s Colli Orientali del Friuli region is a lovely example of how this ofteninfamous grape can deliver an elegance and depth of fruit that can also cover a variety of delicate starters. Another great all-rounder that’s extremely flexible with food is Myburgh Brothers’ Old Vine Chenin Blanc from Joostenberg Estate in Paarl, South Africa. Tyrrel Myburgh is a master with the grape and has an infectious enthusiasm for his organic philosophy in the vineyard, and this Chenin just oozes the same kind of personality with succulent, ripe tropical and orchard fruits and a crisp, juicy acidity. Bags of ‘food-friendliness’.

Moving up through the courses, there are two wines that might interest the more curious amongst us who are looking for something more gastronomic

One of the most difficult decisions appears around mid-December — which case of wine should we bring to the family gathering?

or slightly off the well-trodden path! Le Faîte Blanc Producteurs Plaimont Gascony may tick those boxes. A fascinating blend of selected parcels of Gros Manseng, Petit Corbou and Arrufiac grapes that delivers a wine full of ripe opulence, creamy texture and mouth-watering acidity, which I can thoroughly recommend with turkey fricassée. It’s a star, and will work well with more challenging dishes throughout the festivities. Another great favourite in the portfolio is Domaine du Nozay’s Le Paradis — a biodynamically run, single-vineyard Sancerre that mixes finesse, minerality, purity and power, and would work well with simply cooked white fish and shellfish. Tasted for the first time recently, it’s a charming bottle of wine.

And finally, Chardonnay… I can still recall my mother crying out: “With a roasted bird!?”.

A few years back, I managed to convince her that perhaps the time-honoured classic combination of Burgundy, or even Burgundy-style Chardonnay, was the way forward with Clan Davidson’s Christmas turkey. Domaine Leflaive’s beautifully balanced Mâcon-Verzé was one of the first bottles that I poured into her festive glass. I can proudly say that it changed her life — well, at least for one day of the year. A slightly alternative classic with a Napa edge, Hyde de Villaine’s HdV Chardonnay delivers classical stone fruit characters and immaculate acidity. Another perfectly matched ‘cracker’ for the festive table…

THE C&B GIFT GUIDE

We’ve put in the work, so you don’t have to.

No need to panic buy socks — if you’re looking for Christmas presents, you’ve come to the right place. A great bottle of wine is more than a material gift, it is an experience. It can build new memories or recall old ones: tell a story or spark a conversation. After all, the best gifts are the ones that can be shared.

This year, let us do the work for you, with handpicked recommendations for the special people in your life.

FOR THE ADVENTURER

Certezas Sémillon, Michelini i Mufatto, El Peral, Mendoza, 2021

Fine wine doesn’t have to mean playing it safe. When seeking that special bottle for someone curious, try Certezas Sémillon, from Argentinian producer Michelini i Mufatto. Made from pre-phylloxera Sémillon planted high in the Uco Valley, this unique wine indulges with honeyed complexity, spicy quince and a surprising mineral tension.

Bottle: £39.95 / Case of 6: £239.70

Château Marsyas Rouge, Bekaa Valley, 2016

If you’re looking to gift the perfect conversation starter, opt for Château Marsyas Rouge. Founded in 2005 by the Saadé family in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, Château Marsyas spans 55 hectares of prime, high-altitude vineyards at the foot of Mount Barouk. Their Rouge is classically structured with dark berries, rum and raisin, complemented by cracked pepper. Perfect to sip by a roaring fire while telling the story of this incredible estate.

Bottle: £29.95 / Case of 6: £179.70

Not To Be Missed Mixed Case

Delight them with a glorious line-up of distinctive bottles that all have that je ne sais quoi. From a lively, irresistible Albariño and fragrant, floral Grüner Veltliner, to a deliciously rich and innovative Amaronestyle red, and Austrian Zweigelt rich in dark cherry and sweet baking spices, this is a wonderfully varied selection. They may even find new favourites to keep on sipping into the new year, and beyond.

Case of 12: £169.00 / Worth: £188.91

FOR THE CONNOISSEUR

Fino Viña Corrales, Pago Balbaina Saca 2022

Fino Sherry meets iconic producer Peter Sisseck. Upon visiting Jerez, Peter had an epiphany: no one was producing single vineyard Sherry, and thus Fino Viña Corrales was born. This is a showstopping Sherry scented with camomile, cherry blossom and blanched almonds. The aromas twist and turn in the glass, drawing you in sip after sip.

Bottle: £34.25 / Case of 6: £205.50

Aus den Lagen Spätburgunder Weingut A. Christmann 2019

For the Pinot Noir lovers, we recommend Aus den Lagen Spätburgunder from Weingut A. Christmann. The estate’s calcareous marl soils, similar to those found in Burgundy, really let this German rendition of Pinot Noir shine. The wine is dark and gently peppery on the nose, with a supple palate of sapid, textured blackberries and cherries, accompanied by fine, gentle tannins. A stylish pairing for turkey and all the trimmings!

Bottle: £33.95 / Case of 6: £203.70

Legendary Mixed Case

A collection of outstanding fine wines to impress the most discerning of palates. A succulent Californian Chardonnay, showstopping Puligny-Montrachet and joyfully zesty Savagnin from Jura represent the whites, while a Burgundian Pinot Noir, Christmas-spiced Brunello di Montalcino and generous Claret round off the case. A supremely elegant selection to make this their finest Christmas yet.

Case of 6: £315 / Worth: £362.71

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING WITH EXTRA OOMPH?

Fear not! Corney & Barrow’s Head of Broking, Gary Owen, has compiled a selection of very special wines for very special occasions (or recipients). From iconic back vintages of Bordeaux to sought-after Barolos, this little black book of fine wine has something to delight even the most discerning wine buffs. And the best part? Some of these wines are available as single bottles, making them perfect for gifting or for those who’d like a treat without the full-case commitment.

FOR THE GEN Z

Ascension Chardonnay, Loncomilla, Valle del Maule, Maturana Wines, 2023

From the ruins of the 2010 Central Chile earthquake, the Maturana brothers, Sebastian and José, reshaped their future — crafting bold, low-intervention wines from some of the country’s oldest vines. Maturana’s wines are meticulously crafted from nearly century-old vines and heritage grapes, with a low intervention sensibility. Their Ascensión Chardonnay, with skin contact and partial ageing in clay amphorae, concrete eggs and old oak barrels, is a weird and wonderful wine with a zesty zip and an earthy finish. New wave Chile at its finest.

Bottle: £16.95 / Case of 6: £101.70

Riesling Beblenheim, Domaine Trapet, Alsace, 2023

We were delighted when our friends the Trapet family of Gevrey-Chambertin decided to take over family vineyards in Alsace, applying the same biodynamic disciplines as they exercise in Burgundy. Their Riesling Beblenheim is from vines planted on chalky soils which impart a floral, citrus character, the wine becoming more mineral with age. The 2023 vintage boasts lemon zest, cantaloupe and honeysuckle with a chalky minerality and the region’s signature zesty acidity, creating a vibrant, lip-smacking wine.

Bottle: £23.95 / Case of 6: £143.70

Soraie, Cecilia Beretta, IGT Veneto, 2022

Since 1998, the object of Cecilia Beretta winery and its vineyards, owned by the historic Pasqua family, has been to make the highest quality wines possible from the indigenous grapes of the region. Through the Cecilia Beretta range, the Pasqua family aims to recapture the force and personality of the traditional wines of the Valpolicella and Soave areas, which are the precious products of a unique and original history and culture. Soraie IGT Veneto is a unique take on the Amarone style — more accessible but with much of the character. Rich and velvety, with flavours of black plums, cherry, vanilla and a moreish chocolatey finish.

PAIRING IS CARING

Christmas Day is all about spending time with those you love, but food and drink provide honourable supporting roles. From the mug of mulled wine after a cold morning walk, to the glass of fizz sipped whilst opening presents, we make very considered decisions about what we drink on the big day, perhaps more so than at any other time of the year. Therefore, when it comes to the main event of Christmas dinner (or lunch, depending on your stance), you will probably spend some time picking the perfect wines to match your festive feast. But doing so can be a daunting task — pairing wine with food is tricky, particularly when the dinner table is full of so many different dishes and contrasting flavours. Thankfully, C&B has you covered with a fantastic selection of red wines to suit every style and budget.

Given that Christmas Day is delightfully full of indulgence, a light, fresh red wine can be a nice starting point. Tres Priors Trepat Merlot 2024 comes from the Conca de Barberà appellation in northeastern Spain and showcases the indigenous Trepat grape variety. This is a lighter style of red with bright flavours of crushed strawberries, pomegranate and a touch of dried herbs. If you’re feeling daring, you can serve it slightly chilled, and it will be a fantastic match for nibbles, canapés and starters like pâté.

When you’re hosting a large group of friends or family, it can be difficult to find a wine to suit everyone’s palates, and work with almost any food. My go-to crowd-pleaser is Mucchietto Primitivo 2024 from Puglia. Packed with juicy berries, sweet spices and ever-so-silky tannins, it is an instantly likeable wine, and very food-friendly. Even your granny will love it!

Having roast turkey on Christmas Day? Pinot Noir is a classic match because turkey has relatively delicate flavours and little fat. However, when pairing wine with food, remember to always match the most

dominant flavour on your plate — you will also have cranberry sauce, sprouts and stuffing to contend with! Therefore, a Pinot Noir with a little more ‘oomph’ from a warmer climate is a great option — I like Fossil Point Pinot Noir 2021 from California’s Edna Valley. It has bright red fruit, elegant floral notes and a nicely balanced acidity that will refresh your palate between mouthfuls.

When pairing wine with food, remember to always match the most dominant flavour on your plate.

Heartier dishes such as lamb, beef, or a veggie Wellington call for a wine with a little more structure and complexity. I recommend Psi Bodegas y Viñedos Alnardo 2022, a Tempranillo-dominant Ribera del Duero, which combines crunchy red and black fruits, with a touch of dark chocolate, and fine, wellintegrated tannins.

And if you can’t treat yourself to a special bottle of wine at Christmas, when can you? A classic Bordeaux is the perfect centrepiece on a Christmas table — guaranteed to impress guests, pair well with meaty main courses and enhance your end-of-dinner cheeseboard. I will be drinking Roc de Cambes 2017 — produced on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, this is a Merlot-dominant blend matured in 100% new oak. The resulting wine is rich and powerful, with luscious, plump fruit, layered with mocha and warming vanilla. Sounds like Christmas in a glass!

WOLFSCHMIDT KÜMMEL

After an absence from the UK, Wolfschmidt Kümmel has returned. First crafted in Riga in 1847, this historic liqueur quickly became a favourite of Tsars, European aristocracy, and closer to home, an intrinsic part of British golfing tradition. Affectionately known as “putting mixture,” it has been enjoyed for generations both before tee-off to steady one’s nerves, and in the clubhouse to round off a post-game meal.

Distilled today in Switzerland, the recipe remains true to its origins: a smooth, aromatic blend of caraway, cumin and fennel, with a warming sweet spice finish. Versatile and distinctive, it can be enjoyed neat, over ice, or in cocktails.
