MP officially Making dough and raising dough! opens award winning day nurseries

Plymouth MP Luke Pollard has met with local childcare provider Cheryl Hadland of Tops Day Nurseries at the nurseries in Stonehouse and Devonport and pledged his commitment to support local childcare providers.

Luke joined Cheryl Hadland, managing director of Tops Day Nurseries during the official openings for Tops Stonehouse on Wolsdon Street and Tops Devonport, based at Greenark Children’s centre at the beginning of May. Throughout the open day, colleagues, parents and Luke Pollard MP signed a specially made pledge board to agree to banishing single use plastic and reducing waste to landfill.

As one of the South’s leading ecosustainable day nursery groups with 29 settings across the South Coast, Tops are leading the way in sustainable childcare. One of the group’s settings were even the first nursery setting in the UK to achieve the Surfers Against Sewage: Plastic Free Schools status.

Speaking after the official opening event, Cheryl Hadland said: “I am delighted Luke Pollard has pledged his support for childcare providers, families and children in Plymouth “At Tops Day Nurseries we provide topquality early education to our children, and we’re pleased that the Government’s 30-hours childcare policy means that more three and four year-olds can benefit from our services.

“However, funding in Plymouth is less than the cost of delivery, and this reduces our ability to pay our staff what they deserve and burdens parents with having to pay more towards their children’s education and care than any other parent in Europe.

“We also want a healthier environment and future for our children and grandchildren. This is why I look forward to working with our local MP to campaign for a more sustainable future for childcare providers, parents and children.”

Luke Pollard commented: “ I was particularly impressed with Tops’ commitment to reducing one-use plastic and reducing their impact on climate change.

“It’s great news that some three and fouryear-old children in Plymouth are now able to receive 30-hours funded childcare. However, I understand that many settings and parents of small children are facing financial challenges, and I will be making representations in Parliament and to the Government to help ensure that every child in Plymouth is able to access a high quality early education and also that we work to improve Plymouth’s effort to reduce one use plastic and air pollution, and to process waste more efficiently, in order to provide a healthier future for our children.”

A special, limited-edition, Help for Heroes tri-seeded loaf will be tickling taste-buds in Plymouth during June.

As part of the annual Bake for Heroes event, the Column Bakehouse in Devonport has risen to the challenge to create the Hero Loaf which will help raise funds for the charity.

The white sourdough bread contains pumpkin seeds, poppy seeds and linseeds, to reflect the Tri-Services and the ongoing need for support for those wounded, sick or injured in service.

But it won’t be around for long. The first batch of loaves will be available to buy for donations from the Column Bakehouse stall at Flavour Fest in Plymouth city centre from Friday May 31 to Sunday June 2.

It will then be stocked every Friday at the Column Bakehouse in Devonport Guildhall and Ocean Studios in Royal William Yard, Plymouth.

The final batch will be available at Armed Forces Day on Plymouth Hoe on June 29. It follows a recent YouGov survey, commissioned by the charity, that revealed many people are turning to baking to fight stress and to improve their wellbeing.

Natasha Mason, 43, from Plymouth is a keen amateur baker and when she was invited to bake her own Hero Loaf, she jumped at the chance: “I came down to the Column Bakehouse in Devonport a few weeks ago and did a day of baking with some other veterans.

“We all went away really happy. It was something completely different. Took you away from the mundane thought processes, gave us something else to focus on and brought us all together. We loved it.”

Natasha served her country for 19 years in the

Royal Navy. She began her career in the Naval Reserves in 1993 and fell in love with the Senior Service, joining full-time in 1994. She started off as a Communicator before becoming a Weapons Engineer.

She served onboard some of the Royal Navy’s biggest warships, including HMS Invincible, and saw conflict in Former Yugoslavia, served on ships supporting operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and took part in the evacuation of British personnel from Beirut.

But her career was cut short after a knee injury showed up a more serious condition: “During my rehabilitation it was found I had osteoarthritis and that was probably caused throughout the entirety of my career rather than just the one injury. But that coupled with an earlier back injury spelt the end of my career.”

“It was obviously a shock being told you have to leave. I was a single parent. You think ‘I’ve got a mortgage to pay. I’ve got my son to feed, bills to pay’. This was all happening 3-4 years earlier than what I’d planned. It was quite daunting.”

But Natasha had a dream: “I quite fancied being a lawyer. Lots of people told me that I should aim my sights a lot lower. I was a Junior Rate for all of my career, and I kept being told that was not a job that a Junior Rate does. But I thought ‘yes I can’. I left the Services in June 2013 and started at Plymouth University in September 2013.

“I’m a trainee solicitor now. I’ve completed my law degree. I did a Master’s in legal practise and I’m now a trainee solicitor at Wolferstans in Plymouth.”

Natasha initially got involved with Help for Heroes with physiotherapy and hydrotherapy treatment but soon realised she needed extra

help to begin her training – which the charity was able to provide: “I was talking to Help for Heroes about needing to do a Master’s Degree. I had a bit of shortfall in the funds for that. The course was an extortionate amount of money, but you can’t actually be a solicitor without doing it. So, I was able to apply for a grant to help me fund the remainder.”

Andy Stuart from Column Bakehouse said: “We believe Help for Heroes is a really important charity that does a lot of good work, especially here in Plymouth. We are neighbours with Help for Heroes, which is in the Naval Base, and we felt it was a positive step to be part of the work that they are doing.

“Baking is very much a therapy with a lot of different aspects. Some of it’s to do with the physical act of kneading and manipulating the dough, sometimes it’s about having that opportunity to work to a specific process.

People are going to take different things out of it depending on what is really important to them. Of course, they always know they can enjoy something delicious afterwards which is a real bonus.”

Plans for new crematorium at Saltram are given the green light

Plymouth College of Art is celebrating the success of its first ground-breaking programme to help drive up employee skills.

The state-of-the-art facility will be built on the east of the city adjacent to Drake Memorial Park off Merafield Road near the Stag Lodge entrance to Saltram Park.

The designs have been produced by local architects Stride Treglown and Aecom show single-storey buildings nestled in green spaces with water pooled around the ceremony rooms.

Inside, light and open ceremony spaces with large windows are in keeping with the desire to provide a modern quality facility.

The plans have been developed with insights from the public and the funeral industry received during consultation events held last year.

Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, said: “The granting of planning permission marks an important milestone in this project. I look forward to seeing work start later this year.”

The new facility will incorporate two ceremony spaces providing differing seating capacity to cater for larger funerals and with the flexibility to accommodate a diversity of faiths and cultures.

The two ceremony rooms will seat approximately 200 people with time slots for funerals generally between 9am to 5pm on weekdays.

There will also be a bereavement suite and ancillary café located at the site entrance, providing refreshments to relatives and close friends of the deceased, prior to or following the ceremonies.

It will feature three modern cremators with the latest abatement equipment to provide clean emissions.

Also included are waiting room facilities, toilets, book of remembrance area and flower room, a reception with meeting room for sensitive discussions, along with landscaped grounds to include memorial gardens and reflection spaces, with public realm planting.

It is proposed that approximately 10 staff will be on site at any one time, with a total of 18 staff being employed across the wider bereavement service.

The new crematorium will replace the existing crematoria at Weston Mill and Efford, owing to their age and outdated facilities.

Children were able to test their physical skills, balancing, swinging and sliding on the park equipment and then they squelched along the muddy river’s edge to discover strange shaped trees; dark curious caves; pearly white shells and slippery seaweed.

After a picnic lunch the children fed some chickens and were later introduced to different breeds of dogs that were staying nearby. They were different colours and sizes, as well as being long haired and short haired.

Finally the children had a run around and a bounce on the trampoline before getting the mini bus back to nursery.

unveiled by Plymouth Universiry Plans to transform a landmark office block at Plymouth Railway Station have been unveiled.

The University of Plymouth is acting as a catalyst for the regeneration of the station by converting the 10-storey Intercity House for academic use.

The University has announced it will be an anchor investor in the development with plans to locate purpose-built academic facilities on the site, building on the University’s significant track record in educating health professionals for the region and beyond.

The University has submitted the first planning pre-application in the programme that will see the area around the station transformed into a fitting new approach to the city.

The application is for a change of use of the former Intercity House from offices to academic facilities by way of a major refurbishment throughout and a full external rejuvenation - which will become known as Intercity Place.

Intercity Place will house clinical skills facilities for the University’s Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Midwifery as well as additional educational services, enabling staff to be working together in one location to support the future health workforce.

University of Plymouth Vice-Chancellor, Professor Judith Petts said: “This forms an important part of the University’s ambitious plans which will transform the campus and transform university teaching and research spaces for the 21st century.

“The station scheme is an important part of these plans and will significantly improve this notable city landmark so that it becomes an exciting gateway into Plymouth.

The project has the backing of the Heart of the SW LEP, Plymouth City Council, the Department for Transport and the Cabinet Office, as well as Cornwall Council, Network Rail and Great Western Railway.

Leader of Plymouth City Council Tudor Evans said: ”This scheme is incredibly complex and entails radical change to the look and feel of the area around the station to create a modern and friendly welcome for the increasing number of passengers.

“The project is huge, complicated and needs a city approach, which is why I am so excited to see this application from the University now submitted.

“We’ve started a journey to completely transform the station to create a better sense of arrival. With public transport playing a huge role in tackling climate change, this journey is more important than ever.

railway station which, when finished, will massively improve the welcome for visitors and commuters arriving in Britain’s Ocean City.

Once planning consent is granted, work on Intercity Place is due to commence early next year and to be completed by February 2021.

Stuart Cade, director and lead architect at MICA added: “We are delighted to be working with the University of Plymouth on the exciting transformation of a prominent Plymouth landmark. MICA’s design transforms the 10-storey station building with a new gleaming bronze anodised, pleated facade that supports a low energy strategy for the high performing academic building.”

Mitch Tonks goes fishing for business Mitch Tonks, who runs the award-winning Rockfish restaurant group, spent the morning with a group of final year students at Plymouth University where they presented the results of their research project focusing on his business.

Mitch, who has an honorary business degree from Plymouth University, has worked with the University’s business and hospitality department previously and encourages other local businesses to get involved.

Mitch said, “Every time we collaborate with students at Plymouth University it has been incredibly rewarding, they work to a very high standard and are totally professional in their approach.

“They understood the brief completely and offered real insight into the business, giving us useful information from their research and really sound ideas that can be used by us immediately. This is a valuable partnership for both of us and we are really happy to continue working together. I’m already looking forward to next year’s!”

A wheelie good cycle challenge for teams Registration for the second annual Every Ride Counts challenge is now open.

The workplace cycle challenge, organised by Plymouth City Council’s Plymotion team, pits teams from organisations in Plymouth against each other to achieve the most bike trips through their daily commutes.

The ‘wheelie’ good competition runs during June and takes in Bike Week during June 8 to 16. It’s all about encouraging more people to get out and about on their bike, reducing car trips in Plymouth throughout June and beyond.

Last summer’s challenge had 86 employees from ten different organisations making up 23 teams to take part in the challenge. A team of four cyclists from Babcock International won Best Team in Every Ride Counts 2018.

This year’s challenge will see teams competing again for the top place, and each bike trip they take, whether a long or short journey, counts. More prizes are up for grabs, including the Every Ride Counts Workplace Award, nominated by employees for being a cycle-friendly employer.

Registration to enter Every Ride Counts closes on June 7.

Increasing the number of people cycling to work and leaving the car at home can improve the health and wellbeing of staff, cut down travel costs to work and help solve limited office parking spaces. It also reduces traffic congestion and leads to lower carbon emission.

One of last year’s participants said: “I have often thought about riding my bike to work, but always found an excuse not to! This was just what I needed to get me to take the plunge and I have carried on cycling into work now the Plymotion event is over and intend to do so until the weather gets pants again!”

A prize of £100 worth of vouchers is on offer for best team (four in a team) and best individual. There is also a prize draw of £50 worth of vouchers up for grabs when people register.

Thefts from vehicles Police have been made aware of a number of thefts from motor vehicles in the Stoke and Morice Town area in recent weeks.

Thieves have smashed windows and stolen items that are on display within the vehicles. Items stolen have included loose change, phone charging wires and bank cards.

The Devonport Neighbourhood Policing Team have reminded vehicle owners to remove all items from their vehicles when leaving them unattended, and whenever possible please park vehicles in well lit areas.

College Road pupils get all kitted up for competitions

Presentation of classic working class play as one man magic show Townsend Theatre Productions is delighted to announce the return of its critically acclaimed stage adaptation of Robert Tressell’s 1914 novel, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists.

Pupils at College Road Primary School in Keyham have been trying on the new sports kit for future sporting events and competitions, which has been donated by Drake International recruitment services.

Leonna and Mitchell Turner, who organised the kit on behalf of Drake International’s south west office, felt that having a matching team kit would give the children more confidence at events.

The school have entered a team into the upcoming Plymouth athletic championships at Brickfields and hope their new kit will give them the confidence to perform well.

Headteacher Jim Wallace thanked Drake International for their ongoing support, adding; “The new sports kit looks fantastic. Thank you so much, Drake international, for sponsoring this and helping the children of College Road to go faster and aim higher! We look forward to welcoming our new partners to the medal ceremonies.”

Ford Park Cemetery’s latest exhibition is entitled ‘Plymouth’s Lost Churches’ and opens from May 18 until July 7.

The exhibits tell the story of the city’s beautiful churches which have disappeared over the years, due to enemy bombing or redevelopment.

The exhibition will be open for public viewing on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Local historian Graham Naylor will give a talk on the lost churches on May 22 at 7.30pm.

Tickets for this event can be purchased in advance from the cemetery office (weekdays only 665442), or on the evening at the cost of £3.

The heritage team will will be heading up a guided walk around Ford Park on Sunday May 26. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 2pm.

Former Navy Chaplain is the new rector at Stoke Damerel A former Royal Navy chaplain is the new Rector of Stoke Damerel Church.

The licensing ceremony for the Reverend Keith Robus took place at the beginning of May and was conducted by the Bishop of Plymouth the Rt Revd Nick McKinnel.

Revd Robus was brought up in a pub in South London, went to the local church primary school and joined the parish church choir at the age of seven. Since that time he has never left.

His early education took him to Westminster College for Hotel and Catering studies then to employment at Midland Bank with Bateman Catering.

From the age of 14 he was aware of a possible vocation to the priesthood and 12 years later it was confirmed by the Church.

He spent three years at Chichester Theological College to be ordained

deacon in Harrow, West London. It was in that parish he became the local Sea Cadet Corps Chaplain.

After four years with a marvellous training incumbent he left to be the curate in charge of a church in the inner city of London, Harlesden, which had a predominantly West Indian congregation.

In ten years the church grew from a failing church to a vibrant community church which opened its doors to all.

From there he was called to serve in Acton where he joined the Royal Naval Reserve. Acton Parish grew and as with all the parishes where he has served, much building work was undertaken.

After seven years as a Vicar in Acton he became a full-time Royal Navy Chaplain.

He spent time at sea with HMS St Albans and HMS Gloucester, and also served as Rector of St Ann’s Church in Portsmouth Dockyard. He has been

on land operations in Iraq and on deployment as sole British military Chaplain in Kabul, Afghanistan. Since then he returned to sea with the Hydrographic and Meteorological Squadron. For his last four years he has been the Chaplaincy Team Leader at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

During the time in Dartmouth he got to know both Bishop Robert Attwell of Exeter and Bishop Nick Mckinnel of Plymouth.

It was Bishop Nick who invited him to apply to become the next Rector at Stoke Damerel. So he arrived with many experiences, a lot of energy and kit-bags full of Naval ‘can do’ spirit.

He thanks everyone who has worked for the parish community in the last few difficult years, and requests they continue with assisting him and help him leading the way forward.

Grand musical event in Devonport Park A music festival in aid of Children’s Hospice South West is being organised by the Real Friends of Devonport Park on June 9.

The event starts at 12 noon and features bands, choirs and soloists as well as a dog show, bouncy castle, face painter and Star Troopers.

Plymouth’s new Lord Mayor takes up his role

Plymouth’s new Lord Mayor Coun Richard Ball and Deputy Lord Mayor Coun Terri Beer have officially taken up their roles.

Councillor Richard Ball has been Compton ward councillor since 2008 and was Deputy Lord Mayor in 2015/2016.

Councillor Ball was born and raised in Plymouth and apart from occasional absences due to his naval career, has lived here all his life. His wife Dianne will serve alongside him as Lady Mayoress. Together they have two children and three grandchildren.

Councillor Ball, said: “I am delighted to

start my term as Lord Mayor and honoured to represent the people of Plymouth.

“Plymouth is the city where I was born and raised and I am privileged to be asked to serve its people. “I hugely enjoyed Lord Mayor’s Day and met many volunteers and charities that I look forward to supporting.

The turnout was fantastic and I hope residents had as much fun as I did.”Councillor Terri Beer will serve as Deputy Lord Mayor for the year.

Impact of lost pets grows on Woodside sanctuary Plymouth’s Woodside Animal Welfare Trust has been taking in pets for decades, and while many are bought to the charity due to personal circumstances, lost pets are proving to be a growing area of concern.

This National Microchipping Month, Lisa Darcy, deputy manager, said: “We could have reunited pets with their owners far quicker if they’d been microchipped.”

With the highest number of lost pets being cats due to their independent nature, Woodside’s telephone incident book has recorded 78 cats as missing in Plymouth and surrounding areas in the last six months.

Perhaps the most obvious method for returning lost felines, a microchip can allow vets and shelters to scan and receive details about an owner and allow a simple reunion.

However, it is important to make sure your details are always kept up to date with the database company.

When a pet is lost, owners and members of the public can help too. Here are just a few things you can do when a cat is lost or found: • Cats can often be lured home by smell. If your cat has gone missing, try hanging out its

bedding or placing litter trays outdoors.

• If you suspect a returning cat is a stray, avoid feeding it; they could be an opportunist and may decide that your home is better than their own perfectly good and loving one.

They may also be on dietary medication or a special diet, and treats could cause them to become ill.

Cats can live for over 20 years and, while healthy and well cared for, may not look it.

They may also be on medication or have medical issues that can affect their weight.

• While also promoting neutering and spaying, the Trust highlight how entire cats are more likely to distance roam to look for a mate, and can be seriously hurt during territorial fights. It is recommended that your pet is neutered for this reason, amongst many other benefits.

Cats aside, Woodside still cares for 19 different species of pet, and felines aren’t the only animals found and bought to the Elfordleigh Sanctuary.

While stray cats have been in the highest number, Woodside have also taken in other animals who have been found too.

Just this year alone, abandoned or escaped hamsters and rabbits have been taken in, while the charity’s welfare team have also assisted in the capture and reunion of a peacock and lamb with their rightful owners.

Menopause day aims to help women take control of the change Only half of women who suffer from menopausal symptoms ever seek professional help. Sally Fletcher, a nurse from Derriford, is going through the menopause herself following cancer treatment and was shocked at how little information is available.

Now Sally has joined forces with local GPs, mental health specialists, nutritionists and local businesses to organise a day dedicated to the menopause for the women of Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

The event is hosted by Emmanuel Church in Mannamead on Saturday June 22, from 10am to 3.30pm.

Speakers will talk about the physical and psychological effects of the menopause as well as the effect the menopause can have on a woman’s identity.

Following a menopause friendly lunch, there will be workshops on sleep, nutrition, the workplace, HRT, relationships and re-inventing your life. Participants will also be able to see displays from Livewell Southwest, Plymouth Options and the Royal Osteoporosis Society.

Confidence about body image can be a casualty of the menopause, so Sally has invited Olwyn Friday of Revive Beauty and Esther Friday aka Girl Friday make-up artist along to the event to help inspire women, to promote the concept of self-care and encourage women in their busy, demanding lives, to take a little time out for themselves.

Sally’s message to women going through the menopause is clear. “Please don’t suffer in silence, help is available and you are not alone. So many of us are going through the menopause and I hope by coming together we can feel more in control of this stage in our lives,” she said.

New enterprise where end of life matters can be discussed

A new community benefit enterprise has been created in Plymouth - thought to be the first business of its kind in the country.

Grey Skies is a one stop shop for end of life matters. It was created by city funeral celebrant Wendy Coulton with the hope of normalising discussion and planning for a topic which is still for many a social taboo and not prepared for.

The shop will be a friendly, welcoming place where anyone can visit as an independent hub providing information and hosting activities, events, training and support related to dying, death and bereavement.

Wendy, who has personally funded the set up and initial running costs of the business, said: “In my six years as a funeral celebrant Wendy Coulton I have witnessed first hand the distress, financial hardship and conflict within families because their loss has been sudden or unprepared for.

“What I have envisaged for some time is a welcoming and comfortable space where anyone can ask about matters related to dying, death and bereavement. Nothing really exists like this in the country so Grey Skies will evolve in response to people’s need.”

Grey Skies will be where information on a wide range of end of life issues and topics is available from leaflets and books to talks, activities and training workshops.

There will also be quality gifts and keepsakes to give comfort to the bereaved and a private space for counselling.

Wendy added: “I am very grateful to Devonport Community Land Trust for giving me the opportunity to use the shop unit for this initiative. If the reaction I have received so far to the purpose of Grey Skies is anything to go by then people have been very open minded and receptive to the services being offered.

“This is an idea I have had for some time now. If there’s anything I have learned from conducting hundreds of funeral services it is that we should try to have no regrets at the end of our life.

I would regret not giving Grey Skies a go - but it’s a bit daunting going into uncharted territory.

“This is a not for profit business - it will be reward enough if people find real value in what is being provided and they feel empowered and informed to make important decisions which give peace of mind and spare loved ones unnecessary distress and hardship.”

Big date at Pavilions Introduces for rising young Plymouth band

One of Plymouth’s fastest rising young bands will play their biggest headline show in June, when they appear at Pavilions Introduces.

The Native is made up of Charlie Noordewier, Ben Andrew, Tom Booth and Harry Youngs, who are all 18, and Max Williams, who is 21. The boys are all local to the Plymouth area and all but Max are studying A Levels at Devonport High School for Boys. Max works for his family’s ice cream business based on Dartmoor.

The formation of the band can be traced back to Charlie and Ben writing songs during their lunch breaks and in between lessons whilst studying for their GCSEs. They were quickly joined by their two friends Tom and Harry at the beginning of 2018 after the group of school mates realised they had a real passion for music.

In June 2018, the band were lucky enough

to win the public vote to play at MTV’s Ocean City Sounds 2018 but were short of a drummer. Max was known from previous gigs and when asked, he stepped up and took on the role with only a week’s notice. Since this he has become a key part of the band, and has solidified the line up now known as ‘The Native’.

With this line up the band has gone from strength to strength, focusing on playing as many shows as possible and writing new material.

The boys describe their music as ‘Indie/ Alternative’ and their sound has been likened to artists such as Fleetwood Mac, James Bay, Amber Run and many others.

Last year saw the release of their debut EP ‘Fall Down’ which has just reached over one million streams on Spotify. They have played at some of the UK’s major festivals including opening up for Bastille at MTV’s Ocean City Sounds, Boardmasters, Port Eliot,

Leopallooza and Tunes in the Dunes.

Their upcoming gig at Plymouth Pavilions on June 22 is their biggest headline show yet and is incredibly important for the band as it will start off their summer season of shows.

Band member Charlie said: “It’s crucial that the Pavilions Introduces shows are supported by the community as it gives local bands the opportunity to play at one of the South West’s premier venues.

“With the closure of venues such as The Hub, support of Plymouth’s local music scene is needed now more than ever. This is a great honour for the band as we will be playing on the same stage as many of our idols we have seen at the Pavilions over the years.”

Four Plymouth building projects up for awards...

Four of Plymouth’s recent property projects have been shortlisted in the 2019 Michelmores Property Awards.

The annual awards celebrate exceptional property and construction projects located in Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Bristol and Cornwall, across ten categories.

Oceansgate Phase 1 in Plymouth, has been shortlisted in the Project of the Year (over £5m) category. Balfour Beatty and Plymouth City Council have come together to create Endeavour House, a new office and industrial space.

The project aims to support a community of like-minded businesses, and has links to innovators and academic research organisations.

In the Education Project of the Year category, Scott Medical & Healthcare College in Stoke, has been shortlisted. The studio college provides 18 specialist classrooms, break-out spaces, a gym, and also a multifunctional atrium. This project aims to support young people aged 13-19, looking to work in medicine, nursing, health sciences and social care.

Sherford has been shortlisted in the ‘Residential Project of the Year (36 Units and over)’ category. This project will consist of 5,500 homes, with three distinct neighbourhoods, including four schools, community facilities, and a 500-acre community park.

Thousands join in tea dance celebrations

Thousands of people fulfilled a promise made during the Second World War by dancing on Plymouth Hoe on May 26 as part of the Lady Astor Statue Appeal.

As part of the project to raise a statue to the first woman to take her seat in Parliament, organisers threw a huge party to thank those who have helped make history - and make a pledge by Waldorf Astor come true.

The original tea dances were organised by Nancy and Waldorf Astor during the Second World War to boost morale after the city was bombed almost beyond recognition during the Blitz.

In the wake of this devastation the tea dances were held on The Hoe and Lady Astor famously joined those dancing. At the time Waldorf Astor said: “The people of Plymouth have danced on the Hoe during the darkest days of war. They will dance here again in peace on a Hoe which overlooks a city which has been planned for them, for a wider, freer, healthier, and more prosperous life.”

Up to 3,000 people - young and old alike gathered on Plymouth Hoe to fulfil that promise and danced again in peacetime.

Sailors from HMS Raleigh joined dancers of all generations and Brownies in tribute to the first woman to take her seat in Parliament and who served as Plymouth Sutton MP for 26 years.

The event was organised by the Lady Astor Statue team with Plymouth Dance and with the Drat Pack band playing a range of dance music from the 1920s through to the 1960s and beyond.

Among those who danced again was Doreen Willis, nee Blackler, aged 90 who can be seen in background of the iconic photo of Lady Astor dancing with a sailor.

The Co-operative Council award, sponsored by the Co-operative Councils’ Innovation Network, recognises the best practice demonstrated by local authorities and celebrates the great work delivered at a local level.

Hans Rosling died in 2017 after a long career as a health expert and educator - noted for his TED talks and YouTube videos.

For most people the world is poorer, less healthy and more dangerous than it is.

In Factfulness, his last book, Hans demonstrates how wrong perceptions can be and sets out 10 tools to help everyone think more positively about human progress. He shows how the brain is wired to make things look worse than they really are, and provide tools to think about the world more clearly.

It’s got lots of graphs and statistics, but it’s an engaging book, full of interesting and moving stories and facts from Hans Rosling’s life.

For example, that the number of guitars in the world has risen from 200 per million people in 1962 to 1100 per million in 2014, and learn to think about all the plane crashes that didn’t happen.

All steamed up in Southway!

Plymouth Miniature Steam is often referred to as Plymouth’s best kept secret.

Hidden away in a nature reserve in Southway valley is a ‘live steam’ miniature railway, which is open to the public for rides on the first and third Sundays of each month from April to October.

Trains travel through woods, over bridges and through tunnels to arrive at the station in time for teas and cakes.

It’s a popular delight for young and old alike. In fact there are as many grandparents as youngsters who visit to see the trains and anything else of a model engineering nature that may be on display at the time.

Plymouth Miniature Steam is a dedicated group made up of model engineers, steam enthusiasts and railway nuts who have over many years developed the railway as part of their hobby.

Members have built the steam engines, diesel electrics, and the rolling stock which carries the passengers around the track, which covers almost a kilometre.

Many of the members have built and own their own engines, some also have large scale traction engines and steam engines of many different types.

While some of the model engineers have their own workshops, work and training is also being carried out at the local Tor Bridge High School workshops where an apprenticeship scheme is being run to introduce youngsters and adult members into engineering and practical skills.

It’s a surprise for many visitors to discover that the miniature railway has been in Southway for nearly 30 years.

The railway was opened in 1990 by the then Lord Mayor Councillor Dennis Dicker with the group’s first locomotive which is aptly named ‘Hernia’ as most of the workers claimed they had one after building and carrying the engine!

The club has been in the Plymouth area for many years and references to large exhibitions in the city centre go back as far as 1947. The club originally had a raised level track in Central Park, from about 1970 but then had to move location during the 1980s due to the building of the Mayflower Sports Centre.

Construction of the Southway Railway sometimes called ‘Goodwin Park was led by the then chairman Sandy Goodwin and the site is named after him. The minor miracle of change that has taken place over 35 years is amazing.

The site was originally used as a council tip and after the Second World War had been used to deposit bomb damaged rubble from the blitzed city centre.

Sandy Goodwin organised over 3,500 tonnes of topsoil and earth moving equipment over two years to achieve the landscaped woodland that the club now enjoys with mature trees and dense undergrowth that encourages wildlife.

Thankfully the Manpower Services Commission, an organisation set up in those days to help train and find employment for the unemployed youth, helped with some of the track laying work and lighter landscaping.

Today it is a vibrant club which provides an appreciated service to the community in Southway by caring for the woodland associated with the railway, and also a source of fun and entertainment during its public running days for children and the childlike who appreciate little trains. We would ask that Visitiors to the area are asked to be mindful of the neighbours and not cause a nuisance from noise or careless parking, and also not disturb the wildlife and parkland.

Plymouth College of Art achieves Baccalaureate World School status Plymouth College of Art has become the first college of its kind in the South West to be awarded International Baccalaureate World School status.

Step out for children and raise funds A children’s charity is calling on Plymouth residents to put their best foot forward and step out for children.

Members of the Plymouth Support Group of Action for Children are preparing to change a child’s life for good by organising the ‘Step out for Children’ sponsored walk to help its work with some of the UK’s most vulnerable and neglected children.

Step out for Children, a national series of sponsored walks, has seen local communities join together to raise thousands of pounds over the years.

This year’s walk takes place on Saturday June 8, starting from Clearbrook Village Hall at 12.30pm. Long or short routes will be available. The hall will be open from 11.30am, with registration starting at 11.45am. For more information or a sponsor form, please contact Maureen on 292118.

The college’s Palace Court campus for 16 to 19-year-olds joins a global community of schools including Auckland in New Zealand, Hiroshima in Japan, and Washington, USA, all offering an internationallyrecognised framework of career-related education for post-16 students.

The International Baccalaureate Careerrelated Programme (IBCP), will be taught in conjunction with its existing A Levelequivalent UAL Level 3 Extended Diplomas.

This means that for the first time, from September 2019, all 16 to 19-year-olds in the region will have access to this world-class framework of education, combining vocational skills with academic excellence.

The International Baccalaureate Organisation is a global not-for-profit organisation founded in 1968 that is active in 147 countries and has had 1.3 million graduates to date, from an international network of over 4,700 schools and education providers.

Scouts rewarded for life skills Interest in Scouting has increased significantly in recent years with waiting lists now in place to join.

The Plymouth District, which covers everywhere west of the Plym, now has over 800 young people involved in its programmes, supported my 300 adult volunteers.

At a recent event to celebrate the highest accolades in scouting, District Commissioner for Plymouth, James Littlejohns, spoke of his heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who form the backbone of the Scouting movement.

He said that Scouting is indeed a force to be reckoned with with 11 out of the 12 astronauts who have walked on the moon having been Scouts!

The recent awards ceremony, held in Four Greens Community Trust Building in Whitleigh, honoured the young people who had recently completely Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards through Scouts and to bequeath the Queen’s Award for Scouting, the pinnacle of awards for Scouts.

Vice Admiral Sir Richard Ibbotson, one of Devon’s Deputy Lord Lieutenants, presented the awards and spoke of his admiration for Scouting, both as a former head of the Royal Navy’s training organisation and as chair of Trustees at the Torbay and South Devon NHS Trust where he sees the added value of achieving such awards in future careers.

Scott Fearn was given the Commissioner’s Commendation and the Scouts Dragon Award for camping out every month in the year, and volunteering to support a group of DoE candidates who were cycling over three days for their awards and desperately needed another person to validate their trip.

It was clear the young people loved what they do! Scott seemed to be more than happy under the stars, and Dino, who is studying A levels at Hele’s School and wants to attend drama school explained that Scouting was a ed by our Be amaz great experience. le events b i d incre “I’ve been involved since I was five,” said Dino. “I’ve made lots of friends and learnt things I’ll hold onto for life - everything from social skills to fire making.”

Reunion for swimming community

A reunion for who people have been connected with swimming in Plymouth over the last 60 years is taking place in June.

The reunion is for anyone who has been involved with any aspect of swimming either as a swimmer, diver, water polo player, committee member, coach, fundraiser or volunteer.

At previous reunions people have come from as far afield as New Zealand, as well as various parts of the UK. This year swimmers from London, Oxford and several other places around the country, including Devon and Cornwall, have confirmed they are attending.

The reunion is being held at the Caffeine Club, Tavistock Place on June 22 starting at 7pm. Attendees are welcome to bring a friend or family member for an event which promises to be a night of nostalgia.

When slowing down is important...

Slow down. I heard those words at 5am recently. It was in that quiet, inside space where sometimes words drop like whispers of wisdom and pull you up short before you have time to edit them.

Some may say it was the voice of conscience, or self-talk; some may say it was the ‘still, small voice’ of God who speaks to us in the deepest places. Take your pick, but for me I’m going with the still small voice.

Slow down. Funny thing to hear, seeing as I’d just woken up. I lay still, thinking over the last few days.

I’d taken time out, deliberately to regain lost resources of patience, good temper and kindness. My colleagues at work were very pleased I was doing this. Family too.

Slow down. I thought I was, gardening and occasionally thinking of the ‘bigger picture’ of where the business is going outside of the micro detail. But the Voice was softly persistent.

Slow down. I had enjoyed the end result of the work in the gardens, yet that sense of something missing still remained.

As I lay there quietly, another question arose out of my heart: ‘Did you enjoy the process?’ The answer – No. I hadn’t enjoyed that very much. I was looking forward to the end of hours of work when I could sit back, crack open a beer and relax in the results and say ‘Aaaaaahhh that’s better.’

Slow down. I was so fixed on the goal that I treated the process as just the way to get there as fast as I could. I had been blessed to take some precious time, time that can’t ever be recovered, Ian Pilkington and instead of enjoying that time I had ploughed through it unheeding.

I have no recollection of whether it was warm, sunny (it was) or even if the birds were singing.

So, I’m slowing down. I’ve noticed, as I slow down, that my responses to my children are different. Instead of barking with just enough edge to get their attention and get that job done, I’m a bit gentler.

In that space, my youngest (seven going on 16) has started to make her own choices to help around the home and to simply do what she’s asked.

Not always (oh Heaven!) but enough to make me realise that when I shortcut quickly to the barked command in order to get the job done, she hasn’t even time to grow in her own choices. Slow down, indeed.

Thinking back over the years bringing up her older brothers, I marched them through life from goal to goal; at times I treated relaxing as a task.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.’

Calling all Plymouth choirs!

Mayflower 400 needs you Do you lead a choir or singing group? Your group could be part of a momentous, global event on Plymouth Hoe for the Mayflower 400 commemorations.

2020 is the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage, one of the most influential journeys in global history and a defining moment in the shared history of Britain, the US and the Netherlands. Plymouth was the Mayflower’s final departure point in the UK and the city is the lead partner in the commemorations.

As part of Mayflower Week, a major four nations ceremony is being planned for Wednesday 16 September 2020.

The ceremony organisers are looking for existing choirs and vocal groups from Plymouth and the surrounding area to take part in the event. While event details are being kept under wraps for now, there will be a new piece of music for the chosen choirs to learn and perform during the ceremony.

A wide range of singers are wanted to create a stunning musical performance. This includes people of all ages, backgrounds and differing experience levels – from beginners to fully trained singers.

The event offers the chance for a significant number of people to be involved, but to ensure the right balance of singers, choir leaders must complete an online application form for their group to take part.

Applications must be submitted by Sunday June 9 and all choirs will be notified of the outcome at the beginning of July 2019.

Choir leaders will be required to attend a session to learn the piece of music in January 2020 and then teach it to their groups during normal rehearsals. There will be a full rehearsal in September 2020, just ahead of the main event.

Daredevil Rosy flying high Dame Hannahs supporter Rosy Holland is bravely celebrating her 70th birthday with a Wing Walk!

Having celebrated her 60th birthday with a flight in a Tiger Moth, daredevil Rosy was keen to take on a new challenge to celebrate her 70th.

The Wing Walk takes place at Bodmin Airfield on July 2.

As she approached her big birthday, Rosy decided that she was not ready to slow down yet and wanted to take on a new challenge. She decided to support Dame Hannahs when she met a young person helped by the charity and also read about the Wing Walk in the press. Rosy retired from teaching 15 years ago and has led a busy and active life ever since.

Rosy has already raised £3,000 for Dame Hannahs but is still busy fundraising. In all her fundraising efforts she is supported by her husband Ken and children Andrew and Clare and their families.

Keen photographer Ken has given some photography presentations of their recent trip to India and also raised money for Dame Hannahs.

Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed production of Les Misérables comes to Theatre Royal Plymouth from June 11 until July 6.

Since Cameron Mackintosh first conceived this new production of Les Misérables in 2009, to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary, it has taken the world by storm. Originally touring the UK throughout 2009/10, and concluding with 22 performances at the Barbican, this production was hailed by audiences and critics alike.

This production inspired the hugely successful movie version starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne.

Plymouth Miniature Steam Plymouth Miniature Steam is a group of like minded enthusiasts who have an interest in steam engines, model engineering , or any interesting engineering artefact or machine, the club runs a miniature railway in Pendeen Crescent, Southway. for the benefit of members and the local community, Pictures of our activities can be seen on our website (www. plymouthminiaturesteam.co.uk). Basketball England has announced that Slam Jam, a revolutionary new grassroots basketball programme which aims to introduce the sport to primary school aged children across the country, is coming to Plymouth.

Slam Jam, which has been created in partnership by basketball and educational experts, is a landmark programme for Basketball England, representing a notable investment into the grassroots level of the game.

Slam Jam will be delivered in both school and community locations in Plymouth with fun-filled sessions lasting between 45-60 minutes.

Running for six to twelve weeks, it has been designed to provide children with their first experience of basketball and an achievable

advantage of our subsidised taxi scheme (£2 each way). Members are also able to enjoy our regular meetings when we have short mat bowls, darts and other activities, and come to the two meals out every year. Targeted specifically at seven to 11-year olds, children have been involved in every part of Slam Jam’s design, from choosing the mascots and characters to developing the games and drills which form the sessions.

Over 1,000 children have already enjoyed the benefits of Slam Jam during a pilot period earlier this year, with 97% of participants saying they want to continue playing the game. Basketball England is aiming to introduce 180,000 new children to basketball through the programme.

Comedy legend Sir Lenny Henry will be appearing in Plymouth later this year.

Lenny Henry is one of Britain’s best-known and celebrated comedians, with a career which began with cult stardom on children’s television including writer, radio DJ, TV presenter, co-founder of Comic Relief and award-winning actor.

He will bring his latest show ‘Lenny Henry: Who Am I Again?’ to Plymouth Pavilions on November 10.

In the first half of the evening, Lenny will take the audience through a jam session of funny and sad memories and stories - from growing up in the Black Country, puberty, school, friendship, family secrets and unashamed racism. With his mother’s mantra of

‘H’integration’ echoing in his ears, Lenny will recount setting out on his rollercoaster ride of a career - but at every stage wondering: Am I good enough? Is this what they want?

In part two, Lenny will be interviewed by friend, broadcaster and author Jon Canter, for further insights into his life and career, followed by questions from the audience. Dr Marc Epps from BASICS receives the cheque

A group of knitters in Plymouth have raised over £600 for BASICS, the local lifesaving charity.

The group, which meets at Chocaccino in the Barbican, first heard about BASICS - which stands for British Association for Immediate Care Schemes - in April last year and after finding out more about the charity’s work decided to fund raise for it.

Jude, the Chocaccino knitting group organiser said: ”Although the Knit Group has been going now for several years, it was only three years ago that we discussed the issue of fundraising.

“In 2016 we each produced a few Poppies some in crochet and some knitted. By the end of the venture we produced 100s of them raising around £300 for the British Legion.

“We then decided to support on an animal charity called the Cinnamon Trust. During 2017 we raised £200 to enable them to upgrade some of their facilities in Hayle.

“So early in 2018 we had a group discussion as to who we would next support? Fatima, in her role as a GP, told us about all the amazing stuff BASICS Devon guys do. So that was us sold!”

Jude said they raise the vital funds by knitting, crochet or sewing small seasonal items such as Easter chicks, bunnies, daffodils as well as Christmas items and hearts for Valentine’s Day. Their efforts this year were boosted by Joanne, one of the group’s members, who bravely had her hair shaved off, raising over £300 in the process to boost the overall total.

BASICS Devon volunteer responder Dr Marc Epps from Plymouth went along to see the ladies to thank them for their hard work, as they reach an amazing £606.50 and will continue to support BASICS Devon this year.

He said: “This donation will make a real difference to the local community. It will help to ensure the volunteer doctors have current medical equipment and can continue to provide immediate access to specialist emergency medical care at the scene of illness or accident.”

BASICS Devon want to say a huge thank you to the Chocaccino Knitting Group for their continued support and look forward to the rest of the year with them.

Dartmoor Rambling Club The Dartmoor Rambling Club is a long established Rambling Club based in Plymouth. We have a regular programme of walks on alternate Wednesdays and at some weekends. The Wednesday walks generally use public transport from Plymouth City Centre to the start of the walk. Wednesday walks are usually about 8 to 10 miles on Dartmoor or on the coast and are taken at a pace to suit the participants. A popular soft play venue in Plymouth city centre is celebrating its first year anniversary.

Plymouth Soft Play Café is part of Plymouth Methodist Central Hall - opposite the Cornwall Street entrance to Drake Circus Shopping Mall, and is the realisation of a dream that started over 10 years ago.

The café opened on June 5 last year and has proved a big hit with families.

Although there are soft play centres on the outskirts of the city the team behind the idea felt that it was time for the city centre to have one.

The Methodist Church generously provided a grant for this and a year later it’s proving a magnet for mums and dads and young children from two to eight years old as well as toddlers and babies.

Julie Morris, a member of the Soft Play Café team said: “Almost every day new people find their way here and are blown away by how wonderful it is for their little ones.”

In addition to the Soft Play, built on the stage in the sports hall, there are ride-on cars, small climbing frames, trikes and scooters.

Sofas, tables and chairs provide space for parents and carers to relax, while keeping an eye on their

children. Delicious cakes, sandwiches, teas and coffees can be bought.

There is a charge for the play area and this is helping to fund the under fives family worker in the church.

Various groups use the café for their gathering including breast feeding support groups and a cloth nappy library.

The Soft Play Café opens from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 2.30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 11.30am to 2.30pm on Thursday and 10am to 3pm on Saturday.

During school holidays the venue is open from 10am to 3pm Tuesday to Saturday.

Cost for two to eight year olds is £3.50 and toddlers from 12 to 23 months £2.

It’s a grand day out at Aardman for Plymouth students!

Thirty animation students from Plymouth College of Art have visited Aardman Animations in Bristol for a day of workshops with the internationally-acclaimed animators.

Among the party of BA (Cons) Animation students was Elliot Rowe, a former carpenter and boatbuilder from Elburton, who was so enthused by the hands-on skills offered

by Aardman that he returned to Aardman Academy soon after for further modelmaking training.

The students attended a workshop led

by Jim Parkyn, a senior Model Maker with almost 20 years industry experience. He taught students the process of how to model the Aardman character Morph, first seen on television in the 1976 BBC show Take Hart.

He has also worked on animated movies including Shaun the Sheep, Chicken Run and The Pirates!

A second workshop was led by Neil Pymer, a creative director at Aardman working on the studio’s interactive and immersive projects. Neil, who was nominated for a BAFTA for his work on BBC’s Escargot Escape Artistes, taught students how to build and prototype their own interactive stories. Elliot said: “I’ve been a fan of Aardman Animations since watching Morph on Art Attack as a boy.

Visiting the Aardman studios was a dream come true for me, particularly when senior model maker Jim Parkyn led a workshop on how to make our own Morph models.

“Growing up I struggled at school because of my dyslexia and my family felt like I needed a practical trade, so as a result I became a fully qualified carpenter and boat builder. But I’ve always had a passion for art and animation, and Plymouth College of Art have helped me discover the worlds of stopmotion animation, set and prop fabrication.

I’d been working in carpentry since I was 14 years old. “ I’m 27 now, preparing to graduate in BA (Hons) Animation, and because of the skills I picked up along the way I feel like now I can design and build anything.”

Tim Pattinson, senior lecturer and programme leader for BA (Hons) Animation at Plymouth College of Art, said: “One of my first teaching jobs in North America involved bringing a studio pipeline model for animation into a Higher Education environment - creating a pipeline for creating and delivering animation assets to deadline, in the same way that students will be expected to when they go on to work in the industry.

“A layout artist from Disney features came to visit us and was blown away by how successfully we’d implemented that live studio model within the classroom.

That’s what I’m putting into practice now at Plymouth College of Art, preparing students for work at the big animation studios, which is why we’re so fortunate to have an internationally-respected studio such as Aardman based in Bristol, so close to us.

“We’re very grateful to everybody at Aardman for making us feel so welcome and giving students such an excellent opportunity to network and learn invaluable skills.”

‘Cook Your Catch’ event returns to Royal William Yard Marina The marina at Royal William Yard will be the focal point for a range of activities this summer - and the first sees the return of the popular Cook Your Catch event.

Highlighting the very best that Royal William Yard Marina has to offer, the Cook Your Catch event sees visitors taking part in the ultimate fishing, seafood dining and wine tasting experience.

Taking place on Saturday June 8 and Saturday September 14, Plymouth Boat Trips, in partnership with wine experts Le Vignoble, will set sail for the plentiful local waters to fish for mackerel, sea bass and whiting.

On returning to dry land, diners will be welcomed to Le Vignoble where they will be treated to a fully guided English wine tasting and a selection of nibbles.

Expert chefs will then demonstrate how to fillet, prepare and cook the day’s catch fresh from the boat. Paired with a glass of English wine and served alongside locally sourced salads, diners will be able to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

For a lighter bite, visitors can venture out on the new lunchtime cruise with Plymouth Boat Trips. Available every Saturday and Sunday at 1.45pm from the Marina, time allows for the opportunity to sample a delicious lunch from one of the many restaurants in Royal William Yard, before setting off on an hour-long coastal cruise to discover stunning coastline views and learn about Plymouth’s rich heritage.

With the new ferry season launched at the beginning of April, visitors can travel by water to experience the rich coastline on their way to the Yard. Operating throughout the season, the ferry links the Royal William Yard to Mount Edgcumbe and the Barbican. With bikes and wellbehaved dogs welcomed on board, it makes for a convenient and scenic travel option - perfect for attending the Yard’s key summer events.
