Welcome to the summer edition of Profile - and my very first as Interim CEO of the Devon Chamber of Commerce.

It’s a real privilege to be writing this foreword and introducing what is undoubtedly one of our most packed and exciting editions yet.

This issue shines a spotlight on one of the most vital elements of our economy: Plymouth’s training and employment sectors.

At a time when skills development and workforce readiness are more important than ever, it’s encouraging to see so many inspiring initiatives taking place across the region.

You’ll find fantastic examples of collaboration between education providers, businesses and community leaders throughout this edition all working together to shape a stronger, more resilient future for Devon.

I also want to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us at the Crowne Plaza Plymouth in May for our glittering Devon Business Awards ceremony.

It was an unforgettable evening celebrating the passion, creativity and ambition of businesses from across the county.

We were blown away by the response this year, receiving more than 250 nominations across our 12 categories - as well as dozens of entries for our 30 Under 30 campaign, delivered in partnership with the University of Plymouth.

Our judging panel had the near-impossible task of narrowing down the entries to just three finalists per category. You can meet all our amazing winners later in this edition.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the support of our brilliant Awards partners and Chamber patrons - thank you for helping us bring such special events to life.

NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT ON DEVON AS BCC CHAIR MEETS LOCAL BUSINESS LEADERS

The Devon Chamber of Commerce was delighted to welcome Sarah Howard MBE, Chair of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), for a day of engagement with member businesses across Devon.

Richard Marsh, Interim CEO of the Devon Chamber, and Clare Baker, Membership Experience Manager, accompanied Sarah throughout the visit, which began at Kawasaki Precision Machinery (UK) Ltd in Plymouth.

Lee Crocker, Managing Director and Chair of the Plymouth Manufacturers’ Group, and colleague Paul provided a tour of the site, showcasing the scale and innovation of local manufacturing.

The group then joined some of the Chamber’s key partners and patrons for a small roundtable discussion, where the focus turned to the real-world challenges and opportunities facing businesses in Devon.

Topics ranged from skills and recruitment to infrastructure, trade and growth, with the insights gathered feeding directly into the BCC’s work on the national stage.

The day concluded at Fresh Air Studios, where Sarah joined Richard for a special edition of the Chamber’s ‘In Conversation With…’ podcast series, proudly delivered in partnership with Westcotts Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers.

this spring, captures Sarah’s reflections on the day, the role of the Chamber network, and why the voice of Devon matters in shaping UK business policy.

CHAMBER FOCUS: Plymouth Training and Employment

City College Plymouth’s Skills Builder initiative closely with employer needs and community aspirations. surpasses expectations - one year on Funded through the UK Shared Prosperity A community-focused initiative to tackle economic inactivity and build skills for a stronger Plymouth workforce has smashed its targets and is changing lives across the city.

Plymouth Skills Builder, a City College Plymouth programme supported by the City Council, is celebrating exceptional success one year on from its launch.

The project built essential foundations for future employment for those who took part, allowing participants to access basic skills training through City College Plymouth and

Argyle Community Trust, demonstrating strong demand for fundamental skill-building among economically inactive individuals.

Others received job-search support, and reengaged with education through the initiative, a critical first step for those distanced from training and employment pathways.

In collaboration with key partners including Argyle Community Trust, Plymouth Active Leisure, Livewell Southwest and Achievement Training, the project has engaged 283 individuals, exceeding its target by 60 per cent. The majority of those reached were deemed ‘socially excluded’, demonstrating the project’s success in reaching those furthest from employment, education and traditional support.

By offering targeted, practical support that builds confidence as well as skills, the programme is transforming lives across our city, building lasting opportunities for individuals and strengthening Plymouth’s future workforce.

“The success of the first year not only demonstrates the strong demand for inclusive, community-based employment support, but also showcases the power of collaborative, local delivery models to tackle economic inactivity at scale.”

STEP INTO A NEW CAREER With Skills Bootcamps at Exeter College

Yuliia Shuldiner Exeter College has been at the forefront of delivering Skills Bootcamps since their inception in 2021, helping adults across the region boost their skills, gain confidence, and take meaningful steps forward in their careers.

These government-funded programmes are short, flexible courses designed to support

adults into new roles or to progress within their current jobs. Running part time, usually over 10 to 16 weeks, learners attend one day a week, benefitting from the expertise of the College’s specialist lecturers and, often, realworld insight from industry partners.

The range of Skills Bootcamps on offer continues to grow, responding to the evolving needs of employers and learners alike. One of the newest additions is the Dental Nursing Skills Bootcamp — ideal for those looking to start a career in dental care, support a new recruit, or help existing team members step up into more advanced roles. Successful completion can also open the door to a Level 3 Dental Nursing Apprenticeship.

Among the latest cohort is Yuliia Shuldiner, who came to the UK from Ukraine three years ago. Drawing on her background knowledge in medicine, Yuliia saw the Dental Nursing Bootcamp as a practical route into a new profession.

“I would like to improve my English and, in the future, have a more interesting job,” she says.

“I already have a little knowledge of medicine, and it uses international terminology, so it’s transferable.

“I like that I can work and study together — it’s a good option for me and helps with learning English too.”

New Apprenticeship Programmes at On Course South West

We’re excited to announce the expansion of our apprenticeship programmes, designed to support local businesses and address skills gaps across Plymouth and the surrounding areas. Our new programmes focus on key sectors including Creative, Digital, Business Administration, Finance and Accounting, and Health and Wellbeing.

The launch will take place in two phases: phase one apprenticeships will begin in June, with a full launch in September. These programmes have been developed in close collaboration with employers to ensure they meet industry needs and contribute to workforce development. The strategic priority is to build strong, lasting relationships with employers, ensuring they remain engaged and satisfied with the apprenticeships we offer.

Long-term, we aim to create a sustainable model that evolves with the needs of both businesses and learners.

For the last two years, the Devon Chamber’s 30 Under 30 campaign has celebrated dozens of the region’s incredible young business people - and now, we’re thrilled to reveal our winners for 2025!

Young business people play a hugely important role in the future of our economy and our business community.

That’s why we’ve joined forces with the University of Plymouth for our 2025 campaign in a bid to reward young talent.

Each year we invite nominations for our 30 Under 30 list, celebrating the young talent in the region and recognising the next generation of business leaders. And every year, deciding

Our 2025 campaign culminated in a tough morning of judging at the University, where our expert panel of Steve Warren-Brown, Becky Moore, Rich Adams, Helen Lofts and Claire Wallace ran the rule over dozens of brilliant entrants to pick our winners.

LIFE IN AI: SOUTH WEST GETS HANDS-ON WITH THE FUTURE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE In Summer 2025, the South West experienced the future first-hand at LifeIn AI - the region’s premiere artificial intelligence event, held at the cutting-edge Market Hall in Devonport, Plymouth.

Headline partnered by Devon & Somerset LSIP and Devon Chamber of Commerce, and delivered in collaboration with Smart Working Revolution and Tomlinson Solutions, this free one-day event welcomed hundreds of attendees eager to explore how AI is shaping the world of work, technology, creativity and wellbeing.

With a full schedule of keynote talks, interactive workshops, live demonstrations and immersive experiences, LifeIn AI brought together businesses, educators, students, jobseekers and curious minds of all ages for a day of learning, connection and innovation.

Bringing AI to Life Attendees were greeted by a robotic dog capable of collecting farming data - and doing backflips. Nearby, another robot, designed to help combat loneliness, interacted with visitors, showcasing the emotional potential of AI in healthcare and community settings.

The University of Plymouth’s innovative contributions were just the beginning.

Visitors also experienced augmented reality goggles allowing them to explore underwater environments, “clicking” on fish to learn more, and ventured into the 360° immersive dome, which screened engaging AI-themed content throughout the day.

Hands-on exhibits were a major draw, giving people the chance to trial emerging tech, ask questions, and imagine what AI could mean for their futures.

Skills, Innovation and Strategy: AI on the Agenda The keynote stage featured a range of talks that explored how AI is transforming careers and industries. The day opened with The Intelligence of Together – a powerful session led by Ronnie Carter (Devon & Somerset LSIP) and Josh Hoole (Smart Working Revolution), exploring collaboration as a strategic advantage in the age of AI.

From there, keynote speakers tackled essential topics including: • The Future of Jobs in an AI-First World • How AI is Unlocking Small Business Potential • Digital Marketing & AI Integration • Can We Trust AI? • The Biology-AI Connection in a Changing World Speakers from Tech South West, Optix Solutions, Cosmic, Heart of the South West Growth Hub, and Phenomyx CIC helped attendees unpack the ethical, commercial and scientific implications of artificial intelligence.

Interactive Learning for All Upstairs, a series of workshops and practical sessions invited people to roll up their sleeves and test AI tools for themselves.

Highlights included: • Shadow AI to Strategic Superpower with Josh Hoole – a practical look at harnessing AI in the workplace • AI Image Generation – led by City College Plymouth, empowering creatives to turn hand-drawn sketches into digital art using AI • AI Agents & Automation with Inovara – showing how AI can save time and streamline workflows • The AI Circus – a metaphorical journey through what to embrace (and what to avoid) when bringing AI into your business Workshops from Elixel, Plymouth Business School, GE HealthCare, and others brought AI’s possibilities to life in practical, digestible ways.

And we ended the day with a recorded podcast that will be available soon to view and listen, led by Paul Philpott from Fresh Air Studios.

Why This Matters for LSIP For Devon & Somerset LSIP, LifeIn AI couldn’t have come at a better time. A recent

study by Accenture revealed that 97% of businesses know they urgently need to adopt AI, but just 15% feel ready to do so.

This event was a perfect fit with LSIP’s mission to strengthen regional skills through real-world business insights. LifeIn AI helped bridge the knowledge gap and highlighted the need for upskilling, reskilling, and strategic thinking around digital transformation.

As AI continues to shape the way we live and work, events like these play a crucial role in ensuring our region isn’t left behind. They give local people access to the tools, insight and confidence to embrace the future.

ENHANCING DIGITAL MARKETING EXPERTISE - A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE AT THE SKILLS BOOTCAMP Olivia Paterson, Communications Executive at the Devon Chamber of Commerce, reflects on her positive experience at Devon County Council’s Skills Bootcamps.

As a Communications Executive at Devon Chamber, my role involves managing a variety of digital content, enhancing our brand presence, and ensuring effective engagement with our members.

Enrolling in the Skills Bootcamp in Digital Marketing proved to be an invaluable decision.

From the outset, the Skills Bootcamp was structured to provide a comprehensive learning experience. YTKO’s flexible approach of online classes as well as additional weekly check in sessions were incredibly helpful. The classes covered crucial topics such as SEO, social media strategy, content planning, and GDPR compliance - all areas directly relevant to my role.

The first class set the tone, providing clarity on course objectives and expectations. Meeting the tutoring team and networking with other professionals from diverse industries enhanced the learning experience. The interactive sessions, coupled with real-world case studies, enabled me to optimize my understanding of buyer personas, brand-building, and AI integration in digital marketing effectively.

AI in Marketing: Understanding how to leverage AI tools helped in automating content scheduling and refining our analytics approach for data-driven decision-making.

The GDPR and Data Handling session was instrumental in strengthening our data policies, ensuring our marketing strategies continue to align with legal requirements.

The final Masterclass facilitated a structured approach to action planning, allowing me to set SMART goals for continuous improvement in our digital marketing efforts.

The Skills Bootcamp in Digital Marketing provided an experience that significantly enhanced my confidence as well as my professional capabilities. The mentoring sessions and Learner Portfolio development further reinforced my

understanding, making the experience very rewarding.

I highly recommend this Bootcamp to any professional looking to elevate their digital marketing expertise and stay ahead in the industry.

Clare Baker, the Devon Chamber’s Membership Experience Manager, said: “It was wonderful to see how much Olivia gained from the bootcamp, not just in new skills and in some cases a deeper understanding of areas she was already skilled in, but also how her confidence in her abilities has grown.

I am certain this sharing amongst the group has greatly added to the original course content and made it even more relatable to the workplace.

At Westcotts, we place a lot of emphasis on spotting future talent. Our recruitment process focuses on alignment with our values and someone’s ability to grow with us, all within a wider framework guided by our Diversity, Equality & Inclusion ethos.

Training and development thinking long term Training shouldn’t stop once someone joins. Lifelong learning is key - and that goes beyond formal qualifications.

We currently have more than 40 apprentices in training and more than 30 have completed their apprenticeships in the past five years. Many of them are now in management or even partnership roles. We’ve built a clear, structured development pathway and all staff submit annual CPD (Continuing Professional Development) plans. We also run weekly “Training Tuesdays”, covering everything from technical topics to soft skills, communication and performance reviews and inclusive leadership.

This approach has earned us a place in the Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers but more importantly, it has helped us attract and retain brilliant people and help them progress.

Wellbeing and belonging One thing I’ve learned is that development only works if people feel safe, supported and listened to.

We’ve introduced mental health first aiders, wellbeing initiatives like “Wellbeing Wednesdays” and practical support such as a healthcare cashback plan. Our internal feedback systems - including appraisals, surveys and a peer recognition scheme - help

us keep improving. None of these things on their own are revolutionary but together they create a workplace where people feel heard and looked after.

The bottom line – what it all adds up to All of this has a business benefit too. Our staff turnover remains below 11% and we continue to attract great people who want to build long-term careers. But ultimately, the impact is most visible in the stories - like one of our team, who joined us as a Level 3 trainee and is now knocking on the door of becoming a Partner.

That’s what happens when you invest in people with purpose, support their commitment and professional growth and recognise the power of combining formal qualifications with hands-on experience.

So, taking into account all of the above, my message to other businesses is that you don’t need to be a big company to make a big difference. Start by listening to your people; build a culture where development and wellbeing are taken seriously; hire with potential in mind; and commit to learning as an organisation, not just as individuals.

At Westcotts, we’re still learning too - and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

THOMPSON AND JACKSON SOLICITORS RAISE OVER £4K FOR TREVI

Thompson and Jackson Solicitors strive to support their local community.

The firm are profoundly motivated by giving back to organisations that provide essential services in Plymouth and the surrounding area. This is demonstrated by their continued engagement with local charities.

For the past two years, Thompson and Jackson Solicitors have been raising money and awareness for Trevi, an incredible charity in Plymouth that provides invaluable support to victims of domestic violence. They have now raised over £4,000 for Trevi through various fundraising efforts.

Thompson and Jackson have held some impressive events in aid of Trevi. Last summer the team trekked over 40 miles from Teignmouth to Tavistock which was a real challenge, but with some incredible team work, they pushed through to conquer that huge undertaking.

They have also hosted two successful yoga events, one of which took place at the Dome

in Market Hall boasting a fully immersive nature experience.

Thompson and Jackson have also recently arranged a coffee morning for their staff raising over £300 for Trevi. It offered a wonderful spread of homemade cakes and a raffle to win a Ninja Air fryer.

They also provide seasonal gifts to Trevi, including homemade cupcakes on international women’s day, Easter eggs and Christmas presents.

This April, four courageous volunteers from their team, Lauren Sayer, Katie Miller, Jess Craig and Olivia Gates, took part in a skydive organised by Trevi.

This was particularly daring because the jump was from the highest altitude you can skydive from in the UK, being 15,000 feet.

It is almost 3 miles up from the ground, and includes a full minute of freefall where our volunteers reached speeds of 125mph.

However, it was all worth it because as part of this event alone, Thompson and Jackson

raised a whopping £1,800. All four of the brave skydivers described how incredible the experience was and were cheered on every step of the way by their friends and families who all came to show their support.

Thompson and Jackson will continue their endeavours and fundraising efforts throughout the remaining year to ensure that Trevi can continue providing their vital services to those most vulnerable in our community.

UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH HIGHLIGHTS THE BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH STUDENTS “The work the intern produced from their project by far outweighed the time it took us to create the opportunity.”

As well as supporting students academically, the University of Plymouth is proud of its work to ensure that students are well prepared for the world of employment.

From placements and graduate jobs, to part-time work and modern micro-internships (short voluntary work experience projects between three and 10 days long) – the opportunities are many and the mutual benefit significant.

But what’s it like actually hosting a student? And what benefits does it bring? Regardless of a business size, internships are possible – and make a difference to all involved.

Westcountry Fabrication Ltd, a member of Devon Chamber, hosted a micro-intern for 10 days in 2024. Here’s what Director,

Sam, had to say: “Running a small business is challenging, office space is limited and our team are busy juggling many tasks. When I found out about micro-internships, I was keen to support a student.

However, the challenges of additional workload associated with student supervision, induction and office space limitations did cause me to hesitate.

“We decided to proceed, with the understanding that we would discuss days and times of internship with the student once they accepted the place.

This worked really well for us as we were able to be flexible to our needs and theirs in the times they came into the office, ensuring there was space and supervision available. There was a

small amount of admin to set up the internship, and the usual new starter induction requirements.

But it really was a delight to have someone new, with fresh perspectives in the office.

The University of Plymouth handled the recruitment and they did a fantastic job! I would highly recommend this opportunity to other businesses and students."

Student Linda added: “I had an amazing time and learnt so much.

How to get involved The University of Plymouth’s Micro internships have grown from a pilot of 26 in 2020 to more than 140 in 2024 – with host organisations from all over Devon and beyond. If you have a short project you need help with, or one of those ‘I haven’t got time, but I know it’d be useful’ tasks, it could be the route for you.

The more traditional full-year placement is also something the University runs on a number of its courses, from engineering to arts.

These are great way of identifying employees of the future – with many placement students going back to their placement provider upon graduating – while helping students to become fully immersed in their future industry.

A high proportion of Plymouth students look for part-time work alongside their degree, and companies can use our careers platform at any time for free to

advertise part-time casual work.

Employers can also use it to advertise graduate roles free of charge too.

And the University’s annual Careers Fairs are another key way for employers to meet and engage graduates of the future, while providing networking skills in a supportive environment for our students as they learn.

I joined Exeter Chamber two and a half years ago as CEO after exiting Coastal Recycling Limited, where I was a shareholder and board director. I’m proud to have instigated and been part of a board team that oversaw the sale of the business to an employee ownership trust, ensuring it is now run for the benefit of its staff.

As CEO of Exeter Chamber, and now Deputy CEO of the newly-formed Devon Chamber, I’m incredibly proud to represent and champion the interests of our fantastic members while supporting the teams at the Chamber.

I love my job because it gives me the chance to meet an extraordinary variety of people, businesses, and organisations. Each one is doing something brilliant to benefit our region, county, economy, and community.”

What inspires you?

Great people doing great things, in business, in their organisations or in the community.

Where do you see the future of your organisation?

I see our recent merger and subsequent creation of the new Devon Chamber as the start of a journey. We have brought two powerhouse cities and the membership of two brilliant chambers together to do the very best we can do for our members. We have a huge amount to offer and I see the opportunity now to roll this out across all parts of the county and who knows beyond.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Be yourself.

If you could sum up your CV in one word, it would be...

An ongoing journey not without a few bumps in the road.

When it comes to business, do you follow head or heart?

Starts with heart, finishes with head.

Describe yourself in five words Happy, Interested, Optimistic, Creative, Caring (I wanted to put Hungry, because I’m on a diet!).

How do you balance life and work?

I love the great outdoors and walking the South West Coast Path. Inspired by my wife, we are two days off completing all 600-plus miles. I love the mountains and skiing, any travel and any sport.

What’s your favourite quote?

It’s more of a marketing mantra: Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.

Who has been the greatest influence on you?

My first proper boss, the late Robin Hall.

He gave me my first opportunity at RH Advertising, where I eventually became an owner through a management buyout. Robin taught me invaluable lessons: to always stay curious, to never stop asking questions, and to truly understand and empathise with the perspective of the person you’re speaking to.

His wisdom continues to guide me in both my professional and personal life.

What are you most proud of?

My family will always be first, closely followed by what we achieved at Coastal and what we are about to achieve at the new Devon Chamber.
