It’s never too late to learn!

There’s an old saying that ‘it’s never too late to learn’ and that is certainly true for local mum Dyl Williams.

She was unable to make the most of her education for a variety of reasons, but thanks to the adult learning organisation On Course South West, Dyl was able to get the qualifications she needed to secure an excellent job.

You can read her inspiring story on page 8 of this month’s magazine.

Dyl’s story is similar to that of many people who, often through no fault of their own, did not have a good experience with school education.

By the age of 15, Dyl had attended 16 different schools, due to a fairly chaotic home life. This included time in South Africa and when she returned to the UK she was backtracked to Year 9 due to differences in schooling.

“I couldn’t cope with that, I was 16 (born in September) and was in a class with 14 year olds.” Shortly after, she was made homeless and moved from shelter to shelter until she was 19, by which time she also had two children.

As a single parent she moved to Plymouth to give her family a better chance with a fresh start in life.

“I always believed in myself, I knew it was my education that was missing, not my intelligence,” said Dyl. She applied for, and was accepted, on courses to further her education, but each time the opportunity collapsed because she could not afford childcare.

Fortunately, On Course South West were running a functional skills course at Whitleigh Green, and – most importantly – they offered free childcare.

“That made all the difference,” said Dyl. “My two oldest, Nay and Luca, were at school but the free crèche was needed for my youngest, Annie. It meant I could study and prove to myself and others that I was capable of more. It also gave me a chance to socialise, which helped my mental wellbeing, too.”

Dyl learned to help Nay and Luca with their homework and after gaining her functional skills qualification, she went on to more study, learning all the time. She also used her increased confidence to become a volunteer for Trevi House.

Volunteering for Trevi, she taught herself how to use web coding software HTML because, as she says, “I could never get hold of the website guy so I tried it myself.

“Trevi advertised for a co-ordinator for their new project, Pause, and I heard of it because I posted the vacancy on the website. So, I applied. That was when I realised I needed to know Excel, so I got down to learning it.” She could not have done that without her foundation in functional skills.

The interview process involved a pre-test where her numeracy skills and analysis were tested; then an interview and a five day induction with other candidates, many of whom were extremely well qualified on paper.

“But I also had the life experience and had volunteered for five days a week – I was determined to help people to change and thought the best way to do that was to be part of the change myself,” said Dyl. It paid off, and Dyl got the job. “I burst into tears I was so happy,” said Dyl. “I told everyone ‘I’ve done it, I’ve got a Big Girl paid Job!’” It all started with the care as well as the skills training that On Course South West provided to Dyl. Tristan Parkinson, On Course’s community marketing lead said: “Our functional skills courses are run locally in different areas of the city, and we can help people overcome travel issues as well as childcare with our family learning service. This is a big issue for many of our learners and we’re delighted it has worked so well for Dyl.” It’s all coming full circle now for Dyl, as the ladies on the project at Trevi frequently gain functional skills at On Course.

“I can model this,” said Dyl. “People know my journey – if I can do it, they can believe that they can, too.”

KF Kitchens win another National Award

Local kitchen retailer and showroom KF Kitchens has won another prestigious national kitchen award. The Plymouth -based company topped the ‘Best Showroom Experience’ category at this year’s Häfele Studio Partner Awards, following on from last years Studio Partner of the Year Award.

The ceremony, which took place on Thursday 27th June, was held at Scotland’s Gleneagles Hotel. The Häfele Studio Partner Awards celebrate the achievements of Häfele’s Studio Partner network –170 plus premium independent Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Studios across the UK which have access to Häfele’s extensive product range of furniture

and fittings.

The award was presented after the Plymouth based studio were visited by a mystery shopper, along with other nominated studios from all over the UK. Mark Buckette, an industry insider, who visited KF Kitchens on the pretence that his mother was moving to the area comments “Nathan and Derinda approached me with a warm professional attitude. Nathan took time to listen to my needs and at no time in the conversation did I feel I was wasting his time.

What came next was very unexpected. He asked me to take a seat and explained that the most important thing when deciding on a project was to have some idea of the cost.

Sunshine Kitchen

Walking in my garden in these summer months, I’m noticing how beautiful the herbs are. Not only are they good to eat, they produce lovely flowers, the bees love them and they are pleasing to the eye and smell divine. Not all plants can boast that.

How often do you use herbs? Did you know herbs are a concentrated source of both flavour and nutrition? They add a vibrant freshness to my everyday dishes. I wouldn’t dream of eating Spaghetti Bolognaise, for example, without fresh parsley scattered over the top or make a salad without fresh herbs. I really miss their zing if they are not there.

So, if the pots of herbs on your kitchen windowsill are just for decoration and you’re watching them wilt, I have good news for you, Salsa Verde!

This is my secret weapon for unexpected guests or to just lift up a weeknight meal.

Salsa Verde is an Italian classic aromatic and piquant sauce, traditionally used to add flavour to poached meat or fish.

It goes beautifully, however, with any meat, fish, chicken or vegetables whether roasted, pan fried, poached, blackened or grilled.

I say ‘Italian’ but there are other countries that claim they are the place of its origin as it is used in Tabbouleh and scrambled eggs. It has even been found on fish tacos!!

Using Salsa Verde is the way I raise everyday meats and fish and even salads to another level. If I want to make an impression, but don’t have time to cook anything complicated, I make Salsa Verde; it never fails to impress and only takes a few minutes. I’ve put mine on monkfish in the picture.

I always have fresh herbs growing outside my kitchen door on the patio so I just tear off handfuls of what I need and I’m ready to impress.

Since it is BBQ season, we have everything barbecued and I get bored with it so Salsa Verde comes to the rescue!

Even though it is made from Olive Oil it has the ability to cut through fat. (So great with lamb and salmon).

This is the first Salsa Verde recipe I ever tried and it is still my favourite: • Flat Leaf Parsley - one handful, chopped • Basil – one handful, chopped • Mint – one handful, chopped • Dill – one handful, chopped • Capers – one tablespoon, rinsed in cold water and chopped • Anchovy fillets – four, chopped • Garlic – one small clove, minced • Shallot – one, finely chopped • Lemon juice – one tablespoon • Olive Oil – eight tablespoons • Black pepper – fresh ground The method is simple: • Start by chopping the herbs and put into a bowl.

• Add the other chopped ingredients and the minced garlic.

• Then stir in the lemon juice and Olive Oil • Finish with a couple turns of the pepper grinder to taste but not too much • Do not add salt, the anchovies are very salty.

This sauce is all about a balance of taste, so chop and taste as you go. A food processor can be used but changes the colour and texture of the sauce so I always chop mine by

hand. Exchanging red wine vinegar for the lemon juice brings a pleasant change too.

Obviously if you are making this for a vegetarian, just leave out the anchovies.

If you don’t like mint you can leave it out or substitute with another soft herb, like Tarragon.

I find the woody herbs like Thyme or Rosemary can be overpowering, but in reality you can use whatever herb you like.

The famous chef, Angela Hartnett from London’s Murano Restaurant sticks with Parsley alone. That’s the beauty of Salsa Verde it is so tweakable and the River Café’s classic Italian Cookbook favours the addition of a little Dijon, I like that too.

Salsa Verde is also perfect for making new potatoes scrumptious, especially if you have people who don’t eat butter. When you make a fish or chicken traybake just dollop Salsa Verde around the dish and bake for the last 10 minutes.

I really hope you try Salsa Verde – it brings the taste of summer to any plate and brings your star rating to restaurant standard!

FINANCE MATTERS A Plymouth-based Independent Financial Adviser has expressed concern that households in the city are failing to obtain the advice they need and are in danger of not maximising their savings, investments and pensions.

Helen West feels that the importance of financial planning has gone ‘off the radar,’ leaving people unaware of the many options available and are confused by the new regulations.

Helen runs West Financial Management in Hyde Park, Plymouth, and is an authorised Independent Chartered Financial Adviser. She is a member of the Million Dollar Round Table, a voluntary global association of financial professionals and is placed within their top 1% of performers.

There are approximately 64,000 male Independent Financial Advisers in the UK, but there are only about 10,555 women*, making Helen one of a very rare breed (*New Model Adviser magazine April 2019, FCA February 2019).

Next year, Helen has double cause for celebration, with it being her 30th year as an Independent Financial Adviser and the 15th anniversary of West Financial Management.

The firm has a team of five, offering a holistic service to individuals and businesses, specialising in investments, retirement planning, wealth succession planning, inheritance tax mitigation and long-term care. They also work with trusted associates in Plymouth who specialise in mortgages, wills and insurance.

An Independent Financial Adviser is not tied to any particular provider, which means they can offer truly independent advice based on the individual needs of the client: “There are a number of options available when taking pension benefits, so it is imperative that individuals take advice before making any decisions,” said Helen. “Many individuals are not aware that based on their choice, when they die, the money amassed in their pension pot may not be passed on to their loved ones.

Helen also warns that with interest rates offering very little return for savers over a long period of time, many people will have seen their savings actually go down in real terms: “If they have let their money sit in a savings account earning little interest because they ‘don’t need it right now’, that money will be worth less in real terms as inflation erodes the value over time. When the time does come and they do need the money, they find the value has dropped and it doesn’t go as far as they had hoped.”

For example, and illustration purposes only**, based on an inflation rate of 2% per year, if someone had £70,000 today and took no action at all, the estimated value of this money in 10 years’ time might only be £57,424.38 (**ONS inflation figure April 2019, RL360 inflation calculator). £70,000 in a savings account earning 1% interest would generate £700 per year. However, if you were to invest in a medium risk plan you could potentially receive a 3% return, meaning you could receive £2,100.

at the very least seek independent advice in order to make an informed choice: “Yes, there is a fee for independent financial advice,” said Helen. “But the cost of not taking advice could be greater and individuals need to be aware of the pitfalls. It’s really important to put your money in the right place for you, enabling you to turn the tap on and release that extra money when you need it.”

Helen offers an initial discovery meeting and summary letter free of charge. If you wish to proceed further, there is a fixed fee of £500 to provide a report containing Helen’s recommendations to you.

This fee will be deducted wholly or in part from the implementation fee, should you decide to take up any of the recommendations.

With all of her business achievements, Helen says that her Helen West outside her proudest moment this year was offices in Hyde Park when she managed to deadlift the Road, Peverell equivalent of her own body weight: “I was so chuffed,” said Helen, who is also a Rotarian and a Trustee of YMCA Plymouth. “Keeping fit and healthy is very important to me. I do spin classes twice a week and have an ambition to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats.”

Never one to rest on her laurels, Helen is seeking to grow the company and train new advisers ‘in-house’. She is also looking to invest in one or two similar businesses - “if the fit is right”. She currently manages £67 million on behalf of her

clients and purchasing additional businesses will increase her portfolio further: “I love what I do and intend to carry on doing it for another 10 years,” she said. “I want to help as many people as I can with their money.”

Meet the nurses behind Plym world class wound care serv Plymouth is full of surprises. Did you know, for example, that the city is home to a team of world class specialists and researchers, offering unparalleled expertise in wound care? And that they offer a service direct to the public as well as to GP surgeries, nursing homes - and even the leisure and tourism sector.

DDRC Wound Care at Plymouth Science Park in Derriford was launched in 2011 by DDRC Healthcare, a not-for-profit organisation which has provided hyperbaric treatment for patients since 1980. Much of DDRC Healthcare’s work has traditionally been for divers with decompression illness, also known as ‘the bends’. In fact, it’s one of the busiest hyperbaric facilities in the UK, offering a 24-hour service for emergency cases. But recompression chambers also assist in healing wounds because of the way hyperbaric oxygen works with the body’s tissues.

This expertise led to the establishment of DDRC Wound Care, the elite wound care team dedicated to this specialist area of nursing. The team’s services have expanded so that it offers expert treatment for wounds that don’t require hyperbaric treatment - but do require timely, individualised and effective care.

The focus is on treating difficult to heal, post-operative and chronic wounds, including leg ulcers. Many of their patients have issues connected to diabetes.

The team of three specialist nurses is led by Senior Clinical Nurse and Tissue Viability Nurse Specialist, Ali Bishop, who has been with DDRC Healthcare since 2005 and was instrumental in setting up the wound care team.

Before joining the organisation, she was a Leading Naval Nurse with the Royal Navy and served in intensive care on board the Royal Fleet Auxiliary hospital ship Argus, during the 2003 Gulf War. Ali is an Honorary Tutor at Cardiff University for its MSc in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair. She also delivers some of the lectures in the specialism for Plymouth University and she has contributed to many papers on wound healing.

Recently, she was engaged by Devon Community Education Provider Network (CEPN) to deliver in-house training to practice nurses at GP surgeries and health care assistants.

For the public, having such a specialist service in the city is an opportunity to get the best possible care when they need it: “A lot of our patients are on the waiting list to see an NHS Specialist and are wanting some treatment in the interim,” said Ali. “Others have been seen but need additional or follow-up input. Some are looking for a second opinion to find the solution to a long-term problem that’s not clearing up.

They feel they need a different or new plan of care.”

Ali is keen to work in conjunction with GP surgeries in offering this highly skilled service: “We always offer to write a letter to patients’ GPs and practice nurses, detailing our plan of care. And we can work with surgeries so that dressings can be collected there and, if necessary, changed by the practice nurse.”

At DDRC Wound Care’s clinic in Plymouth, an initial 1-hour assessment will cost £80 for complex wounds and £50 for a 30 minute acute or post-surgical patient - look out for the 20% off voucher in this magazine. The cost of any future care is also discussed at the assessment. The initial fee includes a bespoke care plan and there is also the option to buy additional dressings.

GARDENING MATTERS

By Fiona Newton and Rebecca Rose of Plymouth Garden Centre Seeing wildlife flourishing in your garden is quite a wonderful sight. With the bee population still declining, it is so important now more than ever to plant flowers that will encourage them to feed on the nectar and collect the pollen.

As well as pollinating our flowers, bees produce honey to feed the young bee larvae. Interestingly, the larvae that are chosen to become future ‘queen bees’ are fed with ‘royal jelly’ which is honey produced by young female worker bees and incorporates not only the pollen but also chemical secretions from their glands.

And it isn’t just bees that we need to look after; butterflies, hoverflies, lacewings, moths, ladybirds and more, each have their own benefit to our ecosystem and environment. Make your garden into a wildlife habitat and you will reap the rewards – encouraging birds and hedgehogs too (great for slug control!).

It isn’t quite as easy as simply planting any plant: multipetalled flowers are often too tricky for pollinators to gain access and some plants are sterile, which means they don’t produce pollen.

Sterile plants may still produce nectar, however, so can still be used for gathering food. We have picked out some of our favourites pollinator attracting plants.

These plants are perfect for containers too, so even a small space urban garden can become a natural wildlife habitat.

In fact, city gardens are even more important, since the loss of green spaces in our urban areas means pollinators are needing to fly further between plants, often becoming too exhausted, or not finding enough food to feed themselves, let alone their hive.

Lavender and Salvia

Let’s start with the most popular! Bees love Lavender and Salvias, in fact they attract all beneficial insects, including ladybirds who will happily munch away on aphids. Plant it in larger drifts to attract butterflies who prefer large areas of blooming flowers.

Snapdragon and Foxglove

Both plants have tubular flowers which are mainly visited by long-tongued bumblebees although other bees and butterflies will feed on them too.

They use their weight to open the jaw of the flower and squeeze inside to gather the pollen as you can see in the photo! They can be grown as a bushy plant in a container, and dwarf antirrhinum varieties look great in a bed or border.

Dahlia

Most varieties flower continuously through into Autumn and their showy flowerheads make them a fantastic statement plant for a container. Single flowered varieties are perfect for bees and butterflies, but many varieties have masses of petals which make accessing pollen just too difficult for pollinators. They still have a place in the garden through, giving a place for a rest and a wash, as this Small Skipper Butterfly is demonstrating in the photo!

As the name suggests, pop one of these in your garden and you will soon have lots of butterflies! They are available in many different colours, with dwarf varieties for small

Plymouth Art Trail 2019 is about to hit the streets!

They’re iconic bits of Plymouth, but not as you’ve seen them before; they’re everyday aspects of domesticity, viewed through a quirky lens; they’re fleeting ‘wow’ moments spotted while walking in the city; and they’re uplifting abstracts using the language of paint and colour to express words you can’t say.

Rita has spent the past few weeks painting with her left hand, after breaking her right hand in a fall - and is amazed at the results: “It’s been a total revelation,” she said. “There is something that’s coming out that is different. I’ve just started to paint again with my right hand, but I will continue to paint with my left hand as well.”

My Kilimanjaro challenge!

By Andrea James of Peter Goord Travel A few years ago, over a couple of glasses of wine, I shared with my best friend my desire to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain and at over 19,000 feet is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.

We made a pact that we would complete this challenge together. When my 50th birthday was approaching we decided that this would be the perfect time to embark on our adventure!

I love to travel and still feel excited when I arrive at the airport for any trip I have planned, however, this time was filled with a little apprehension about the mammoth task ahead of us.

I travelled with G Adventures and on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport we were met by our guide and transferred to our overnight hotel. It’s here that we met the rest of our group, five Brits, five Americans, one Canadian and one German - mostly in their 20s and two of them had recently completed Everest base camp. Facts that didn’t exactly fill me with confidence!

We had selected the six-day Machame Route because of its acclimatisation profile and its scenery. Unfortunately it’s also known as the ‘Whiskey route’ due to its level of difficulty!

During our welcome meeting and after our introductions we were asked to discuss the toilet situation, which as you can imagine isn’t pleasant on a mountain! They have what is known as a ‘long drop toilet’ which is a hole cut into a piece of wood with a ditch below, which is some cases the ditch can already be quite full!

We were offered the option to rent two toilets at a cost of $400, as this only equated to $34 each, we pretty quickly all agreed that it was essential. On reflection, it was the best $34 I’ve ever spent! Our group of 12 would be accompanied up the mountain with a 42-strong team, made up of seven chief experience officers and 35 porters and cooks.

After a good night’s sleep we were ready to begin our adventure!

Day 1 Once our day bags were packed with three litres of water, wet weather gear, sun hat, sunscreen, hand sanitiser and snacks we were driven to the Machame Gate (1800m) in Kilimanjaro National Park.

After registration, pictures and a carb filled lunch we set off on our 11km walk through the rainforest. This was the first time we heard ‘pole, pole’ which translates as ‘slowly, slowly’ - a phrase repeated frequently over the coming days. The weather was pleasant and we arrived at Machame Camp (2800m) around 6pm.

We arrived at camp to find our tents pitched and our two newly hired porta loos just a few steps away. We were also

treated to our first clear glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro or Kili as it is affectionately known. My stomach flipped with a mixture of excitement and nerves, as it seemed so far away!

We were then all invited to meet in the ‘mess’ tent for tea and popcorn and a briefing on the following day’s trek. We each had to have our oxygen levels and heart rates measured and noted, this was repeated each evening until the end of our climb. After a dinner of cucumber soup, fish, potatoes and vegetables we finally fell into our tents exhausted at around 8.30pm.

Day 2 Despite having never slept in ‘Mild altitude sickness a tent in my life I’d say I slept and headache. Nothing pretty well. We were woken at 6.30am with a welcome can prepare you for cup of tea and asked to meet for breakfast at 7.15am. Today this feeling or wasn’t going to be such a prevent it’ long distance, but we were increasing in elevation to 3750m and the terrain was much more challenging.

It was much steeper than the previous day; the taller vegetation had disappeared, and the scenery was starting to look more barren, more like a mountain. I arrived at Shira Camp mid-afternoon feeling like I’d been beaten with a stick. Time for a short rest before we were introduced to all 42 members of the team and entertained by their singing and dancing.

Bedtime was earlier tonight at around 7.30pm, but not before we took time to appreciate the simple beauty of the night sky and the magnificent stars. Mild altitude sickness and headache.

Nothing can prepare you for this feeling or prevent it.

Day 3 Today was all about acclimatising, climbing high and sleeping low, we trekked for five hours through semi dessert terrain before stopping for lunch at Lava Tower (4600m). After lunch we continued down to Baranco Camp (3900m). Today was a long day, but the mood was good and was constantly lifted even higher by passing porters who always greeted us with a smile and ‘jambo’ to help us along, despite balancing tents etc on their heads! Again, I was suffering from mild altitude sickness and headache. My body was really noticing the lack of oxygen and we still had a long way to climb.

Day 4/5 The dreaded Baranco Wall! You can only pass through this in single file and when it’s busy you need to queue! To minimise any wait we had a 5.30am wake up and were ready to tackle the wall at 7am. Sections of the wall required ‘monkey style’ climbing but I felt safe in the knowledge that our guides and

TRAVEL MATTERS porters were supporting us and lending a hand when required.

Needless to say, only a few porters passed us and within two hours we had all completed the wall.

After stopping for lunch en route we arrived at Barufu or base camp at around 4pm. Today’s meeting was at 5pm and was very important as tonight was summit night! Barufu Camp is perched on an exposed ridge in a bleak and barren landscape.

Unfortunately, with the blustery winds it wasn’t looking great for our ascent. At around 7pm we were told to get some rest.

That’s easier said than done when you realise that in five hours you will be undertaking the biggest challenge of your life!

At 11pm we started to get ready: six layers of clothes on the top half, four on the bottom, balaclavas, hats, gloves and a head torch. Before we set off, our guide told us that we were in for possibly the toughest night any of us would ever undertake.

He said we would need to ‘dig deep’ if we wanted to reach the summit but that we COULD do it. He told us ‘Pain is temporary, victory is forever’ Once we’d done it, no one could ever take it away from us.

At midnight we left facing strong winds and freezing temperatures. After 45 minutes my water had frozen and I could no longer feel my fingers – it was going to be a long night.

After two hours it was obvious that our group had divided up into sections according to our pace. I was left with a guide and a porter and I had no choice but to share their warm drinks to keep me going. The rest of ‘I was mentally and the night is a bit of a blur but I remember seeing dawn break physically exhausted and realised that I wasn’t going to reach the summit at sunrise. I but this was one was too slow for that! of the proudest The last push through the scree to Stella Point was the moments of my life’ most mentally and physically challenging part of the trip. I tried to rest here, but my snack had frozen and the extreme winds made it impossible to relax.

I was then greeted by some of my group who were on their descent. This lifted my spirits as they were all full of smiles, hugs and encouragement. I still had an hour of walking to go before I reached the summit, but their high spirits definitely gave me a much needed boost of energy.

I finally reached Uhuru Peak (meaning Freedom) at 8.03am and I burst into tears. The skies were blue, the view incredible and it was a moment I’ll never forget. I felt so proud that I’d finally made it. What an accomplishment. I was mentally and physically exhausted, but this was one of the proudest moments of my life.

Two more of my group reached the summit shortly after me and it was lovely to all have a moment together, although this was kept brief due to the extreme altitude and freezing temperatures!

Now for the descent – nobody mentions this! It was a killer, we had to use our poles the whole way down, the wind was strong, and I was exhausted. I finally arrived at my camp after dreaming of my tent and mattress for hours, only to be told that due to the high winds camp had been moved. It was another two-hour walk. I cried again. I finally got to Millennium camp at 2pm, 14 hours after I had set off. As you can imagine, we all slept well that night.

Day 6 Our final day…a five-hour descent back to the gate. Once again, my friend and I were last to arrive, but because of this someone else had got to the bar first and greeted us with two bottles of Kilimanjaro beers! Cheers – we’d done it!

In summary: Kilimanjaro was the toughest thing I’ve ever done, harder than I imagined and I think my whole group agreed with this. I feel grateful that I have made some wonderful friends on this journey. It’s incredible how, when you are put under such challenging conditions, everyone pulls together and the support and strength that we all gave to each other was what enabled us all to reach the summit.

Also, six days with no hairbrush, (not intentional!) no mirror and no social media is far more liberating than you think.

My advice would be, if it’s on your bucket list, DO IT. You won’t regret it. And if you can raise a little money for charity along the way, like I did, it’s a win, win situation. www.cornerstonevision.com
