Power up for Cross Rhythms Plymouth

Cross Rhythms Plymouth community radio station is now reaching further than ever before.

The station, which has been broadcasting in the city since 2007 on 96.3FM, can now be heard clearer across the city and its signal travels much further.

It can now be picked up in areas north of Yelverton on the moors and into much of South East Cornwall.

The decision from Ofcom to grant increased transmission power was not guaranteed as several stations across the country were unsuccessful in their applications.

Cross Rhythms Plymouth station manager David Simpson said of the ruling: “We are delighted to have been awarded this increase. It is great to have our FM signal much clearer across the city and we are so pleased that as a result more people will be able to tune in to the station.

“From feedback we receive from listeners we know the station encourages many people in Plymouth. We are committed to airing positive and life-affirming content and we hope that listeners who tune in on FM will notice the improvement to the signal.”

The development comes at a key time for the station in which they are looking to upgrade much of their now ageing equipment. As a community radio station Cross Rhythms Plymouth is charity run and so is looking to raise much of the funds required for these upgrades. As a part of its programming the station is committed to promoting local charities, community groups and organisations who are working for the good of Plymouth and the local area.

Over the years the likes of Shekinah, Friends and Families of Special Children, CHICKS, Street Factory, St Luke’s Hospice and many more have all been featured.

The Community Matters programme, airing weekdays at 11am, provides those organisations with a fantastic opportunity to explain their work.

Robert Maltby from St Luke’s Hospice said of the show: “Cross Rhythms’ Community Matters programme has really enabled us to get our message out there and properly explain what we do.”

‘Topping’ event at Melville building Award winning regeneration company, Urban Splash, has progressed transformation of the Melville building at Royal William Yard with a ‘topping out’ ceremony held to mark the latest construction milestone. The company has also announced a series of new workspaces which will soon be available for Plymouth businesses.

The Grade I listed structure stands in the centre of Royal William Yard; it is one of the final buildings to be transformed within the revitalised waterfront community thanks to the efforts of Urban Splash and the funding support of Historic England.

It is being redeveloped to include an array of waterfront workspaces for retail, leisure and office space suiting businesses of all sizes; units range from 300 sq ft through to 40,000 sq ft in the first phase, and spaces up to 60,000 sq ft in phase 2. Occupiers will benefit from a prime location at the heart of the Yard as well as a bustling neighbourhood filled with 70 other businesses – including Everyman Cinema who confirmed a pre-let on 9,000 sq ft of space within the Melville building last year; a total of 55% of the building is under offer.

The ‘topping out’ means that construction has reached a significant phase, with workspaces on course for phased occupation from early 2020.

Urban Splash commercial director Emily Handslip said: “I am delighted that we have progressed our vision for Melville.

“This is such a special building and we want to embrace all of the original features it has to offer, sensitively restoring the exposed timber beams, cast iron columns and historic limestone and granite facades to create spectacular, well-designed spaces for businesses to base themselves.

“The composition of Melville means there are plenty of brilliant options on the table. We’re a renowned flexible landlord so can accommodate

Royal William Yard has undergone significant transformation by Urban Splash, with partial funding support from Historic England, in the past 12 years. Named Property Week’s ‘Development of the Decade’, it has evolved into a vibrant mixeduse destination, featuring over 90,000 sq. ft of leisure, retail and office space.

John Ette, partnerships team leader at Historic England added: “The Royal William Yard is a remarkable complex of early 19th century naval buildings unrivalled in England, and we’ve been involved in its regeneration for many years. We’re delighted to support this project with a £500,000 grant and to work with Urban Splash, Plymouth City Council and other partners to secure the

future of the Melville Building.

Emily added: “The Yard is a destination that pushes the boundaries of creativity, innovation and discovery, resulting in a unique community in which people want to live, work and play. We look forward to welcoming even more businesses to that mix as we complete Melville.”

Urban Splash is delivering the transformation of Melville – alongside design partners and architects, Gillespie Yunnie; the construction is being undertaken by Atelier Build, with MD Guy Jackson the former construction director of Urban Splash who has been involved in the regeneration of the Yard since the beginning.

“Tackling dog mess in our parks and streets is a high priority for Plymouth City Council and is one of our pledges. This school’s project complements the ongoing work we are doing in partnership with

responsible local dog owners to tackle the issue.

“The vast majority of dog owners are responsible and will clear up after their dog’s mess. But there are a minority who don’t clear up and give other dog owners a bad name.

“There are also fixed penalty notices of £100 for those owners who do not clean up after their dog.

“Pick it up. Can you afford not to?”

Tayla Gaunt, age seven, added: “We want to keep the streets nice and clean, not filled with dog poo. So we decided to make poo bag dispensers.”

School backs efforts to tackle dog mess

A local school is backing Plymouth City Council’s ongoing efforts to tackle the issue of dog mess in parks.

Pupils at Marlborough Primary Academy have made their own dog poo bag dispensers out of recycled plastic bottles, which they are placing in Devonport Park (fixed to fences), filled with dog poo bags for people to help themselves, to try and educate local dog walkers into picking up their dog’s mess.

The Council has an ongoing campaign and pledge to tackle the issue of dog mess, working with local responsible dog owners, and a few months ago several local dog walkers took part in a series of videos to help get the message across and make people aware that they can face a £100 fixed penalty notice if they fail to pick up.

The pupils’ initiative of re-using old plastic bottles to turn them into something useful also supports the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plan for Plastics in addressing plastic pollution and single use plastics.

Thomas Charnock, age eight, said: “We don’t want poo in Plymouth so we wanted to help dog walkers that forget poo bags.”

George Collins, age seven, said: “We loved making the poo bag dispensers because we want to keep the streets clean.”

Lauren Millar, Year Three teacher, said: “Our class have loved seeing the impact that their learning has on their community. We have visited our local library, residential home and now support the gardener’s at Devonport Park. We felt that this was an important place to start when tackling this issue as it is a space which many of them use and enjoy.”

Councillor Jemima Laing, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People for Plymouth City Council, said: “I’m so impressed by how much these young people care about their park and by

Family fun as sailing club ‘pushes the boat out’

New starting point for charity walk

Tamar River Sailing Club held a successful ‘Push the Boat Out’ day in June.

They opened their doors to invite members of the public to try some water sports, which gave everyone a chance to experience the fun of being on the water in the safe hands of qualified experts.

Rides were offered, free of charge, on sailing dinghies, powerboats and yachts and many of the families who attended tried all the options. The fine weather made it a successful day for all.

This also gave the club an opportunity to show off a new Safety Boat - an Avon 5.6m RIB and other equipment - donated by the local group North Yard Community Trust.

The NYCT is an independent organisation assisting the local people of Barne Barton, Keyham, Kings Tamerton, St Budeaux and Weston Mill.

Senior instructor and organiser Tony Ryan said: “The club really appreciates the support of NYCT helping us to help local people.

“We are a Royal Yachting Association Training Centre and they have even offered to sponsor eight local children for a full RYA sailing course. Some of those free spaces are still available, but anyone interested should respond as soon as possible.”

At the end of a very successful day many had put their names down for more fun on the water with the Tamar River Sailing Club.

City at forefront of tackling effects of childhood trauma Plymouth will become one of the first cities in the country to try an innovative new approach to tackling the effects of childhood trauma.

The City Council’s Cabinet are going to be making a commitment to support the work of a Trauma-Informed Network to understand the impact of childhood trauma on people’s behaviour in adulthood.

There is a strong link between the experience of multiple childhood traumas and adverse outcomes in adulthood ranging from criminal offending to drug and alcohol misuse, poor mental health and obesity.

Plymouth’s Trauma-Informed Network is made up of more than 70 professionals, from a number of different agencies including;

Devon and Cornwall Police, city schools, Barnardos, NSPCC, Harbour, Devon CCG and Plymouth City Council, all with insight of how trauma can affect people. The network will start to look at a system wide approach to tackling the effects of trauma by: • preventing traumas occurring in the first place • promoting protective factors for all children • recognising the behaviours that may be the result of trauma and intervening appropriately • helping adults who are already suffering adverse consequences Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet Member for Customer Focus and Community Safety

said: “We know that for some people the effects of a childhood trauma such as sexual abuse, domestic violence or the death of a parent can have a lasting impact on them which often leads to drug and alcohol abuse, offending and risk taking behaviour. We also know that we need a city wide approach to be able to support people and help them understand their past traumas to be able to support them to move forward with their lives.”

The development of Plymouth into a trauma informed city will ensure more effective treatment is offered through joined up services that think about the person as a whole and what experiences they have had, rather than a one size fits all response.

Plymouth is one of nine cities up and down the country staging the WALK IT event to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s & Colitis UK. The event, on Saturday July 13, was originally due to start and finish on The Hoe, but will now take place at Central Park.

This follows Plymouth City Council’s decision to relocate all walking-based fund raising events to Central Park, to make the most of the £9 million investment there.

The event village will be located near the bottom end of Central Park and the 5k route takes walkers from the start point down to Armada Way and then on to The Hoe, which means there will be some beautiful views to take in - as well as being less strenuous for those who have mobility issues. The 10k route starts from the same point and takes in Royal Parade, Exeter Street, the Barbican and Waterfront.

Last year a total of 230 walkers took part, covering either the 5km or 10km route around some of the city’s favourite locations. Their efforts raised a total of £11,000.

People can register as an individual or as a team and will receive a free t-shirt with the £14 registration fee. Children are £7 to register and they also get a free WALK IT t-shirt.

Walkers are being challenged to raise £100 or more - a sum which could help pay for 2,000 people to get the information they need about Crohn’s and Colitis.

Organisers are also keen to hear from volunteers who can help on the day.

The exhibition will run from July 27 to September 15 and will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Instead of the usual walk in conjunction with the exhibition, the Heritage Team will be holding a ‘Young Persons Day’ on August 4 when they will invite young people into Ford Park to enjoy various activities, including circus skills, orienteering, puzzle trail, headstone rubbing and pebble painting. All the activities are free, although donations are always welcome.

The fun begins at 12.30pm and refreshments will be available from the Visitor Centre. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

The current exhibition, ‘Plymouth’s Lost Churches’ continues on the same days until July 7.

The Friends of Ford Park Cemetery will be holding a Summer Fair from 11am to 2.30pm on July 13 with stalls including homemade cakes, bric a brac, tombola, books and jewellery. Refreshments will be available and entrance is 50p.

A quiz night will take place in the Visitor Centre on July 20 at 7.30pm. Tickets for the event cost £6 and can be bought in advance from the Cemetery Office on Plymouth 665442 (weekdays only) from 10am to 3pm.

Lottery boost for Plymouth charity Local charity Transforming Plymouth Together, is celebrating after being awarded over £9,000 in National Lottery Awards for All funding to support its work across the Plymouth area.

The charity which is a joint venture between Church Urban Fund and the Diocese of Exeter works in Plymouth with the support of all the churches in the city to help tackle poverty.

The Feast of Fun is an innovative community engagement for families who find that during the summer holidays their budgets get stretched by the absence of school meals and the extra demands of child care.

The events are designed to be aspirational and bring the churches across Plymouth together in a common cause to provide free and healthy meals throughout the summer. But it’s not just about food, the Feast of Fun combines fun activities every day in a safe environment which engage and care for a wide range of local people.

local adults to learn to read Most of us take our ability to read for granted and are unaware that there are around 2.4 million adults in the UK who either can’t read at all or who struggle with this most basic requirement of everyday life.

If you are reading this, perhaps you’d consider becoming a reading coach for Read Easy Plymouth?

Read Easy Plymouth has recently formed to offer one-to-one reading coaching to local adults. It is affiliated to national charity Read Easy UK, which was set up in 2010 by Ginny Williams-Ellis, who ran the Shannon Trust’s prisoner-to-prisoner reading programme in Dorchester.

Ginny saw how a confidential, one-to-one approach could encourage people to come forward for support and successfully learn to read. The first Read Easy group was started for the wider community, and there are now 29 Read Easy groups across the country – and counting!

Read Easy Plymouth is now seeking people willing to join as volunteer coaches.

No previous experience is necessary: all that is required is a genuine passion and commitment to help local adults to learn to read. Training will be provided with the first training day for new coaches taking place on Tuesday July 16 and there are still spaces for a few more volunteer coaches.

There are many reasons why people may not have learnt to read as children. Read Easy reading coaches minimise the possible stress and embarrassment involved in learning to read as an adult by providing confidential, one-to-one tuition at flexible times and in discreet and convenient places.

Read Easy’s gentle, free, volunteer-led one-to-one approach allows people to learn in privacy, at their own pace, and with the understanding support of their own dedicated reading coach.

Why get involved? The difference Read Easy makes is genuinely ‘life-changing’; it’s a phrase that new readers use over and over

again. It helps them in so many ways: • getting jobs or promotion, or attending training courses • becoming independent shoppers of medicines, food and clothing and life’s essentials • voting in general and local elections for the first time in their lives • reading books, newspapers and accessing the Internet/social media;completing online forms too.

• campaigning with confidence for change in their local communities • having the confidence to go to the doctors or opticians for a check up • increased confidence and self-esteem, and improved mental health • supporting their children and grandchildren with reading and homework Read Easy is cost effective, its working model is very lean, with all the local organisation and one-to-one reading coaching being done entirely by committed and hard-working volunteers.

The extravaganza is not just for the young people – some of the events are about providing

information to parents so they can get a flavour of the opportunities available to them, the expected pay and the qualifications.

Research shows that it only takes three memorable experiences for young people to become passionate about these subjects and to pursue them through qualifications and careers.

Plymouth STEM is a collaboration between industry, Plymouth City Council and Higher Education and Further Education working to grow, keep and attract STEM talent and inward investment. The aspiration is to become known as Britain’s STEM City.

Stem Spectacular now under way A ‘STEM Spectacular’ is now underway with a programme of events designed to inspire Plymouth’s children and young people to get into science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The STEM Spectacular officially started with the launch of a new annual Plymouth STEM schools’ competition at the official opening of the Tamar Bridge visitor centre.

The competition developed by Plymouth STEM, the University of Plymouth and the Institution of Civil Engineers, asks student to re-design a different iconic Plymouth structure each year, starting this year with the Tamar Bridge.

Over the coming months events designed to inspire young people in these key subjects are getting underway.

A total of 15,680 pupils – all in Key Stages 2 to 5 – are all getting specially tailored workshops aimed at challenging perceptions and to show that the key subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are fun. The South West Marine Careers Conference at the National Marine Aquarium on July 12 will offer young people from 14 to 24 and their families a great opportunity to learn more about the marine sector against the incredible backdrop of the UK’s largest marine aquarium. And it’s free.

On July 16 and 17 the STEM M400 Big Splash Tinside Lido and conference will provide a funfilled, interactive day, with students learning about

£7,000 Lottery boost for park The Friends of Devonport Park have been awarded a grant of more than £7000 from the Big Lottery Awards for All.

The Friends will use the £7150 grant for our its ‘Pop up Allotments’ project in Devonport Park.

This will see the creation of eight purpose-built raised planters which will be available for community use to encourage fruit and vegetable growing. Help and advice will be provided by the Friends of Devonport Park’s own voluntary gardening team and their retained horticultural consultant, Dennis Trewin.

To celebrate this award, a Healthy Living Community Fun Day will be held at the end of June, where members of the public will be able to celebrate by entering their own home grown produce into a fun fruit and vegetable show.

The year-long project will enable anyone who has an interest in trying to produce their own food to enjoy the experience of doing so, even if they don’t have a garden of their own.

City Council in moves to protect Plymouth’s historic post-war buildings

Plymouth’s unique post-war architecture could enjoy more planning protection under moves to create a new conservation area in the city centre.

Plymouth City Council is considering the designation, with Royal Parade and Civic Square at its heart of a new conservation area.

It would take in New George Street to the north; Raleigh Street, Derry’s Cross, Athenaeum Lane to the west; Notte Street to the South; and Old Town Street, St Andrews Cross and abutting the western boundary of the Barbican Conservation Area to the east.

If the conservation area is agreed, as well as protecting the buildings, the new status would mean the area is eligible for funding from external organisations such as Historic England.

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning said: “Quite simply there are very few places quite like it. Plymouth has a wealth of post-modern architecture and it all tells the extraordinary story of Plymouth.”

The area being considered forms an important part of Plymouth’s City Centre, which was rebuilt, following its destruction during World War Two, based on A Plan for Plymouth 1943 by Professor Patrick Abercrombie and James Paton Watson.

Within the proposed conservation area are a number of Grade II listed buildings including Royal Bank of Scotland at St Andrew’s Cross, the Theatre Royal, Derry’s Clock Tower, the Bank Pub, the Council House and Civic Centre, Catharine Street Baptist Church, the former Barclay’s Bank and Unitarian Church.

There are also buildings, which although not listed, are regarded as ‘local heritage interest which make a significant contribution to the overall character and appearance of the area’.

This includes House of Fraser and buildings next to it, the group of buildings between the former Derry’s Department Store and Pearl Assurance Building and the former Reel Cinema.

It’s not just buildings being considered – outdoor spaces in this location are also helping to make the case, including the Grade II listed Civic Square and the tree-lined Royal Parade.

Councillor Coker added: “We recognised the heritage significance of our city centre and want to ensure that changes we need to keep people flocking here happen, but in a way that preserves and enhances the character of our most significant heritage assets. We believe this designation will play an important part in helping us to achieve what we set out to achieve in the Joint Local Plan, improving the city centre and protecting our heritage assets.”

Simon Hickman, principal inspector of Historic Buildings and Areas for Historic England (South West), said: “Plymouth is a unique example of a British city centre that was completely replanned following the devastation of World War II. The vision for a new city saw the creation of these heroic wide boulevards flanked by striking – and often beautiful - modern buildings.

Major changes are already in the pipeline with planning applications submitted to refurbish Norwich Union House and public areas around Old Town Street and New George Street, as well as the refurbishment of the Civic Centre.

People can comment on the proposals until June 30.

The proposed Conservation Area designation will go to Cabinet in July. If approved, the area will be formally designated as a Conservation Area.

HMS Drake unveils new Battle Honours Board A New Battle Honours board, representing over 350 years of service has been unveiled at the Main Gate to HMS Drake in Devonport.

There to unveil the sculptured wooden board, made by local craftsman Peter Sings was Royal Marines Colonel Simon Chapman who is Captain of the Base. The board gives a glimpse into the rich and faithful service that Sailors and Royal Marines have shared with the name of one of Britain’s most famous historical figures.

“This honours’ board represents 350 years of brave, loyal and illustrious service by generations of sailors and marines in 19 warships named after one of England’s most famous seafarers,” said Colonel Chapman.

“Positioned at the entrance to HMS Drake, it serves as a daily reminder of the sacrifices made by our forebears in the defence of our country and the responsibility placed on us to uphold the Royal Navy’s reputation and fighting spirit.”

Battle Honours are awarded to military Units to show their operations or battles, and are emblazoned on Flags or Colours. As warships do not carry Regimental Colours, battle honours are instead displayed on a battle honour board, usually made of solid wood mounted on the ship’s superstructure.

City College Plymouth staff have been recognised for their outstanding achievements throughout the year at the college’s annual staff awards ceremony.

Jackie Grubb, the college’s principal and chief executive, hosted the celebration event and the Lord Mayor Councillor Richard Ball presented the awards.

Jackie said: “The staff awards is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the excellent work that goes on across the college.

It’s our way of saying ‘thank you’ to those members of staff who have demonstrated their commitment to delivering outstanding services to our students and other stakeholders.”

Police issue warning over biker ‘ride outs’ Devon and Cornwall Police have been made aware of a number of reports involving large numbers of young people on push bikes meeting for a ‘ride out’ and then cycling across the city.

Some of the reports received and CCTV viewed have identified that a small number of the young riders have been cycling in groups across pavements, within multi-storey car parks and shopping centres, endangering pedestrians, contravening traffic signs and other offences which are unlawful, anti-social and in some circumstances could be considered as dangerous.

A force statement said: “The Police do not want to stop young people enjoying themselves and riding their bikes together, however it is essential that riders do so lawfully and pay attention to other road users including pedestrians.

“One of the force priorities is to create a safe, enjoyable community for everyone to enjoy therefore we encourage parents to engage with their children to ensure they understand the laws when cycling on the highway and to ensure that they stay safe on their bike including wearing the appropriate safety equipment. Police are working closely with other agencies to address concerns from the community and to ensure that young people can continue to enjoy riding their bike safely.”

Col Simon Chapman unveils the new Battle Honours Board

Diners raise £6,000 for Children’s Hospice South West Staff from Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) were delighted to receive a donation of £6000 from Plymouth group the Kingsman.

The Kingsman group was set up to offer men a social dining group which wasn’t specifically about networking. The Kingsman started meeting once a month at Charlie Franks restaurant where members would enjoy a meal and form new friendships and contacts with others from around the city.

The group has now reached 75 members with between 30 and 40 members meeting up each month.

David Barrett, local businessman in Plymouth explained how the Kingsman has grown and how they raised the donation for CHSW. “We are a group of men that love to eat, drink and have a chat and that is what we do once a month at different restaurants. It’s not about networking, it’s about socialising with people from your local community.

There are so many different characters in the group from so many different walks of life but the friendship and comradeship which has formed from the group is quite amazing to see.”

Last November the group set out to raise £1000 for Children’s Hospice South West which runs three children’s hospices in the region including Little Harbour in St Austell which supports families from Plymouth and Cornwall.

David explained: “As soon as we mentioned we wanted to fundraise for Children’s Hospice South West members of the group were so supportive and donations started flooding in.

Sarah Nuttall-Worsley, corporate partnerships fundraiser for CHSW said “The Kingsman are such a lovely group of guys who have handed over an incredibly generous donation of £6000. We are so grateful for their support as we rely so heavily on donations from the local community to keep Little Harbour running.”

Little Harbour costs around £3million a year to run and is currently supporting over 120 children with life limiting and life-threatening conditions, as well as their families.

The hospice predominantly provides families with short breaks and respite as well as end of life care and bereavement support. Little Harbour offers a home from home for families where parents can hand over the medical responsibilities and simply enjoy precious time together making special memories.

Children take part in Clean Air Day activity Preschool children at Tops Day Nursery in Stonehouse celebrated ‘Clean Air Day’ by taking part in planting activities.

The youngsters focused on the importance of trees as part of a day of action by thousands of children from Tops Day Nurseries across the country. Cheryl Hadland, managing director of Tops Day Nurseries has recently become a registered Children’s Champion for children’s charity, UNICEF and is supporting the charity’s petition on fighting toxic air.

Cheryl said: “When we think of the word air pollution we think of thick hazy skies and bustling cities, but did you know that a whopping 92% of the global population live in areas of unhealthy air quality, most of which is invisible?

“As one of the South’s leading childcare providers,

we are responsible for educating the next generation.

We have already stopped the use of aerosols, use electric cars rather than petrol or diesel, have written a transport policy to encourage colleagues to cycle or car share and have plenty of indoor plants across all 29 of our settings.

“We can set this example to the children in our care in a hope that when they grow up they take action to combat pollution, but until then the problem will keep getting worse. The time for action is now.”

Time for Lions Club Dartmoor Walk Plymouth Lions Club’s annual Dartmoor Walk takes place on Sunday July 7.

The annual 10 mile walk will start and finish at Lee Mill and all walking teams, including families, workmates, schools and club are welcome to take part.

The event is not a race and teams of all ages and abilities can join in the fun. Each team will complete the designated course and raise money through sponsorship for their own chosen charity and local Lions’ charities. Sponsorship will be split 50/50 between the two.

The Lions Club organise and monitor the 10 mile walk with RAYNET at check points with refreshment tents en route. There will be a hot pasty and cuppa for all walkers on completion of the event.

Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault on a woman on a busy road into Plymouth city centre.

The 45-year-old Plymouth woman was punched in the face by a man following an altercation about the victim’s dog. She sustained facial bruising and swelling as a result of the attack.

The incident happened at Cattedown roundabout around 7.25am on Friday 7 June.

A 56-year-old man from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of assault ABH and has been released on bail until 5 July.

A police spokesman said: “This assault happened on a busy roundabout on a main route into the city centre so someone must have witnessed what happened.

“We would ask anyone who saw the incident or anyone who has any information to assist with the investigation to come forward.”

Mary (17) led a team of young volunteers attending St John’s Day celebrations at St Paul’s Cathedral, London, on June 22, where events included a service and family-friendly activities in the nearby Paternoster Square.

Mary, a volunteer with Crownhill Cadets, which is open to 10 to 17-year-olds, was named the country’s top Cadet at an event in February.

Since then, Mary has volunteered at the London Marathon and Birmingham Pride, as well as meeting young St John people from all over England to ensure their voices are heard within the charity, and contributing an article on the value of volunteering to the Civil Society website.

“I feel very proud to be taking a leading role in our St John’s Day events, which celebrate all of our people, plus the contributions every one of makes to their communities,” said the Devonport High School student who lives in Peverell.

Mary is working towards a career in medicine and hopes to study at UCL or King’s College.

“Being part of St John Ambulance and going on duties where I get to treat patients has really

helped cement my choice,” she added.

“I’ve always enjoyed how easy it is to talk to all of the different types of health care professionals who volunteer with St John on a one-to-one basis about their careers and getting advice on my future - I’m learning so much.

“I can’t stress how much young people can benefit from St John, especially if they are looking into a medical career.”

Mary joined around 30 district and regional Cadet of the Year winners from counties across England to greet the Lord Mayor of the City of London on his arrival at St Paul’s.

The cadets then moved inside to form part of a procession during the ceremony, as part of the charity’s annual celebrations at the cathedral.

They also took part in a reception the previous evening hosted by St John Ambulance’s chairman, Surgeon Rear Admiral Lionel Jarvis.

St John’s Day is a key event in the charity’s calendar and up to 2,000 volunteers and staff are expected to attend.

MP Luke announces school election result Not every school election result is announced by a real politician but that’s what happened when Year 10 at a Plymouth secondary school ran a campaign about politics, health and well-being.

As part of Plymouth’s month-long history festival, members of the Devonport Park Community Choir led a most unusual walk that brought to life an anonymous poem written in the 1950’s describing a shore leave pub crawl that took in over 20 pubs that stood close to the Devonport Dockyard Wall in those days.

The first verse reads: Come! Gallant men of Devonport, your duty will not wait On tiddley suits and shore-going boats, and muster nigh the gate!

Leave out your starboard fenders, and half head one and all, To South, to North, we’ll sally forth, along the Dockyard Wall.

Lucy Luxmoore, from the Choir said: “The tenverse poem was first discovered in what was then the Magnet pub on Albany Street (now run as the Lugger) pinned up on the wall. On reading it I was struck by how readily it would take a tune and proceeded to set it to music with a simple harmony line. The Devonport Park Community Choir was created in November 2011 in order to christen the park’s newly reinstated bandstand in the Spring of 2012.

The choir had not been going very long when we took this song into our hearts and repertoire performing it on the bandstand in Devonport Park as well as at Rio’s grand re-opening of the Devonport Column. When the History Festival was launched it seemed tailor-made to form the basis for a linear walk which faithfully followed the route taken in the song and 2019 marked the third ‘crawl’.

Thirty people met at HMS Drake and proceeded straight away across the road to the Royal Naval Arms pub across the road. In the poem this pub is called the Duty Watch, and is a wonderful place full of pictures of naval history. The group had a warm welcome from the publican and her staff and sang the entire song, with plenty of ale to quench our thirst.

From there the group proceeded along Saltash Road, hugging the wall, in the direction of Albert Gate which provided the focus for several pubs which no longer exist, but which were acknowledged all the same.

This pause was much enlivened by a sprinkling of anecdotal personal history from Mike Tincler whose family had run the Albert Road Dairy for several generations. The route then took them round to Gun Wharf Gate on the edge of Devonport Park and they stopped and sang select verses for each pub – regardless of whether it was still standing or not.

They were also joined by keen local historian Ernie Stanton who had painstakingly tracked down every pub so the group could undertake the first ‘crawl’ in 2013.

Lunch was at the Steam Packet in North Corner, where the publican Phil made everyone most welcome, and who, in hosting the lunch, was also able to raise money for local charities. As a thank you the choir sang the entire song through and then carried on up to the Lugger, the original home of the poem.

Lucy said: “We then pressed on through Chapel Street past pubs which are now shops or houses to the last pub that still functions: the Queen and Constitution where the final rendition was given.

“Close to the end, we just had to walk down to the statue of King Billy at Mutton Cove, past the New Pier (long gone and replaced with houses) where we reprised the last verse and people said our goodbyes. For anyone who would like to read the poem in full, all four remaining pubs were given a framed copy as a momento – an important part of Devonport’s social history.”

City College lecturer honoured in national celebration of teaching City College Plymouth lecturer, Brian Banks, has won a Silver Teaching Award in the category FE Lecturer of the Year and has been shortlisted for a Gold Award as part of the UK’s ‘Oscars for Teachers.’

Selected from thousands of nominations, Brian is one of just 68 Silver Award winners across the country as the Pearson National Teaching Awards marks its 21st year of celebrating excellence in education.

Award-winning Brian was presented with a prestigious Pearson Silver Teaching Award trophy at the college to celebrate his outstanding achievement.

Brian said: “I was amazed just to be shortlisted for the Pearson’s competition, never mind win the silver award, and to be considered so highly by the judges, staff and students is humbling. I work with amazing people every day, from our wonderful Access to HE lecturers to our superb adult learners, and I’m embarrassed to be singled out from among such company. If I’m to be considered good at this job, then it’s only because I have a love and a thirst for learning which I try to pass on to my students. Being recognised for my teaching is a surprise and a joy, but the honour comes from helping our students achieve their dream of becoming healthcare professionals across the South West. In my mind these are the

true heroes, and they make winners of us all.”

Originally from Belfast, Brian has had a varied and interesting life. For his work with sixth formers as part of a Northern Ireland Peace Project in 1990, Brian won a ‘People of the Year’ award in Ireland. He served for a time as a medic in the Territorial Army in Belfast, before finishing his PGCE in Queen’s University Belfast. His first teaching position was at Campbell College, in Northern Ireland.

On moving to England, Brian started a small web-design business, developing his computing and programming - skills he has since put to great use in his teaching and writing. Missing teaching, Brian took up a position as tutor with Plymouth City Council, moving to City College Plymouth in 2014.

Jackie Grubb, principal and chief executive at the College, said: “Brian is an exceptional role model to his students and colleagues and I am delighted that he has been recognised with this prestigious national award. Brian’s commitment, support and inspirational approach to teaching and learning make him a highly respected lecturer whose energy is infectious. Brian’s lessons are extraordinary and his techniques and inventiveness are now legendary at the College.”

As part of Project-Based Learning at Scott Medical and Healthcare College in Stoke, students were asked to create a political party and a manifesto around an issue that they feel strongly about.

Students then voted and Scott College’s local MP Luke Pollard visited the college for the afternoon to announce the winner.

“Students had to think of a name for their party, design a logo and create posters and leaflets to advertise their manifestos,” explained Nigel Morris, head of the Class of 2020.

The elections took place at the end of May and the whole year group, as well as a number of Year 12 students, were involved either as participants or as members of the audience.

Party leaders delivered their election speeches and students voted using an online survey.

As well as announcing the results, Luke Pollard spoke to the audience and was given a tour of the school’s purpose-built building which opened almost a year ago.

“Students conducted their

research and delivered their speeches with maturity and with a clear insight into the issues that they addressed. Congratulations to Beth of the Philanthropies party who was elected as our Prime Minister,” said Mr Morris.

“Beth and her party will now work with staff and students to make some of their manifesto promises a reality.

Luke Pollard said: “It was a real pleasure to announce the winner of the election – Beth has some great ideas for the school and I’ve no doubt she will implement them!

“It’s been great to see young people speaking so passionately about the environment and mental health today – a real credit to Scott College and the city.”

Beth said: “I’m really pleased and surprised to have won – I worked really hard with my team on our manifesto, our posters and our campaign and I couldn’t have done it without them.

“I want to give people a voice – I shared a very personal story about mental health as part of my presentation and I think it is so important that we keep being more open about it and allow people to talk.

“I am looking forward to making a difference in school and honouring the promises I have made about raising awareness of mental health,” she added.

teach - many of whom go on to train as teachers themselves thanks to the significant impact their teachers have had on them.

Brian has also been shortlisted to win one of just 13 Gold Awards at the UK’s ‘Oscars for Teachers.’ He will join fellow Silver Award winners, along with three Scottish Education Award winners and three winners of the Professional Teaching Awards Cymru, at the 21st UK ceremony of the Pearson Teaching Awards in October, which will be broadcast on BBC TV.

St Luke’s fundraisers will never walk alone Plymouth’s brightest mass participation event takes to the streets this summer, with teams from Plymouth Argyle and Wolferstans Solicitors proving fundraising is more fun with friends at this year’s St Luke’s Midnight Walk on Saturday July 20.

Open air treat for film fans

This year’s walk hopes to see thousands of women turn back time to an 80s-themed extravaganza, moving through the city to raise vital funds for end of life care for communities across Plymouth, West Devon and South East Cornwall.

This is the 13th walk for women organised by the charity, often raising a six-figure sum that keeps their life-changing specialist nurses on the road through the rest of the year.

Nickie Drewery from the Plymouth Argyle support team said: “I thought to myself I was going to do the Midnight Walk as the incredible St Luke’s nurses looked after my dad when he fell ill a few years ago. I mentioned it to some of the people I work with at the football club, which has a massive community spirit, and we decided to get a team together.

“We’ve got a mix of everyone, from those that work in the ticket office, ladies from our schools work and those that work in the grounds on match days. We consider ourselves as much a part of the team as the players here and we want to show we’re here to support Plymouth, not just have Plymouth support us.”

This year’s walk offers three routes, either three,

eight or 13 miles, meaning there’s something for everyone looking to get involved. Registration comes in at £22.84, just enough for the muchloved local charity to cover the costs of organising and managing the famous Plymouth event. It’s the generous sponsorship and donations for the walkers’ hard work on top of the fee that go towards the cost of keeping St Luke’s services running.

Also walking on the night will be Fran from Higher Compton and up to 30 friends from Wolferstans Solicitors. It’s her third time taking on the course and she explained: “At the end of the day it’s the taking part that matters but working as a team means we can do more in advertising and getting the word out to raise sponsorship money.

“You never know when you’re going to need St Luke’s so the more fundraising we can all do the more other families can get the really important support they need when someone close to them becomes ill. The care and help that my mum, and all our family, got from the team at St Luke’s made a difficult time much easier.”

Film fans will be able to watch blockbuster movies under the stars again this summer after the open air cinema programme was announced.

Plymouth Arts Cinema has announced the films that will be shown this summer, at the spectacular venues of Tinside Lido and Royal William Yard. It has been taking its cinema on tour each summer for a sell-out series of events since 2012. One national newspaper recently featured the programme as a Plymouth top Summer attraction for 2019.

The summer programme opens at Tinside Lido between August 1 and 3 with screenings of the classic Bogart and Bergman movie Casablanca, South West favourite Fisherman’s Friends and rounded off with Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

August bank holiday weekend at Tinside features a selection of films which really will have something for everyone. Friday night will see the screening of the classic shocker, Alien followed on Saturday night with audience favourite, Bohemian Rhapsody and Hitchcock’s The Birds on Sunday evening.

The big weekend at Royal William Yard from September 12 to 14, opens with one of the years’ biggest blockbusters, Captain Marvel.

This is followed by the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Friday the 13th and concludes with the second screening of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Smart Sound Plymouth to support next generation of marine technologies

Some simple steps to relieve foot pain...

Have you ever experienced a shooting pain in the heel or arch of your foot when you get out of bed? If so, it’s possible that you might have a very common, yet relatively unheard of condition.

Plantar Fasciitis is a case in point. It affects an estimated one in ten of the population.

For many people, it can cause intense pain, leading to time off work, reduction in sporting activities and a general disruption to quality of life.

It can be caused by a variety of factors including a sudden increase in exercising, shoes with poor cushioning or support, recent weight gain or overstretching your foot which, at the time, might have gone unnoticed.

The condition occurs when the foot is put under excessive strain usually due to the foot rolling inwards. This results in small microtears in the fascia, inflammation and in turn pain.

GPs will often recommend rest or painrelieving medication. In more severe cases, cortisone injections may be administered (ouch). They may also offer specific stretches to help. Any of these can be effective, but these actions deal with the symptoms and not the root cause of the condition. For this reason, some people find they can find some relief, but it won’t go away.

The good news is that many of the causes can be treated successfully with a combination of orthotic inserts (sometimes known as arch supports) and supportive footwear.

Orthotic inserts do two things. Firstly, they stop the foot from rolling in and secondly,

Coupled with the correct footwear, they can provide a long-term solution to the problem of Plantar Fasciitis and in many cases improvements can be immediate.

The Marine Business Technology Centre (MBTC) in Devonport has officially launched Smart Sound Plymouth, a proving area for designing, testing and developing cutting edge products and services for the advanced marine sector.

Using the facilities and expertise available within the MBTC - which is located at Endeavour House in Oceansgate - Smart Sound Plymouth is the first of its kind in the country with a wealth of assets to offer businesses.

The MBTC is a partnership between Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter and the Marine Biological Association. Together, these organisations boast considerable knowledge and expertise in the areas of advanced marine autonomy, alternative propulsion, environmental monitoring, advanced materials and cyber security.

Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “The unveiling of Smart Sound Plymouth represents a hugely significant step in making Plymouth and the surrounding area the UK’s centre for the development, testing and proving of cutting edge marine technologies.

“With the MBTC based in our new Oceansgate development, the UK’s first marine enterprise zone, Smart Sound Plymouth will be a unique selling point for the city and is going to be crucial for growing our marine sector.”

Covering over 1,000km2 of ocean off Plymouth Sound, the proving area’s impressive variety of water depth, sea states and weather conditions is ideally suited for conducting sea trials, including sub-sea tests with access to offshore water depths of 75m.

Through the MBTC, access to Smart Sound Plymouth is free for eligible businesses and comprises a number of physical assets to aid technological development. These will include:

• An unmanned surface vessel operated by the University of Plymouth • Fully instrumented data buoys that form part of the Western Channel Observatory operated by Plymouth Marine Laboratory • The Continuous Plankton Recorder run by the Marine Biological Association • A fleet of support vessels to facilitate trials.

Smart Sound Plymouth is ideally suited for building and supporting the next generation of marine technologies, and will provide access to a professional team.

Professor Stephen de Mora, chief executive of Plymouth Marine Laboratory, said: “Benefiting from a local partnership of world class organisations, Smart Sound Plymouth, as the best understood and instrumented coastal marine environment in the United Kingdom, provides an excellent opportunity to develop and trial marine innovation.”

The MBTC is designed for Devon-based marine businesses to help develop the next generation of technology. The centre has received £2.6 million from the European Regional Development Fund alongside contributions from all the partners, bringing the total investment to £4.5 million.

Help needed to find details of the Richardson family in St Budeaux The St Budeaux Community Association has received correspondence from the Netherlands where a resident is engaged in detailing the period up to the Battle of Arnhem where 288 soldiers lost their lives.

Among those killed was Private James Brown Richardson who was born in St Budeaux and died only 19 years of age.

Whilst the period is long gone my enquirer is interested to know if there is any record of the Richardson family still living in the St Budeaux area. My purpose in writing is to seek your support by asking residents in the area if they have any knowledge of the family or if they can remember any person by that name who may have attended the local school.

Private James Brown Richardson of the South Wales Borderers regiment was killed in action aged 19 on April 13 1945 at Westervoort near Arnhem during the liberation of the City of Arnhem. He is buried in Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery.

My enquirer is preparing a book concerning the liberation of the Veluwe area of the Netherlands and in searching records found the name of Private Richardson and is seeking more information. It would be appreciated if through your Chronicle readers we could uncover more information.

It’s carnival time in Stoke and Keyham!

Free events have always been great for communities to get together. Organisers of community events now have to have more of a handle on health and safety - remember those processions of flatbeds chucking diesel smoke out at face level of toddlers in pushchairs – but it would be difficult to beat the excitement and enthusiasm they evoked in local communities. It’s that time of year again as local communities get ready to celebrate in this side of Plymouth, kicking off with the St Levan Fair on July 13 and moving to the Stoke Fun Day on July 21.

‘Summer’s here and the time is right for dancing in the streets!’

It might be too much of a throw back to the 80s to remember David Bowie and Mick Jagger duetting together on ‘Dancing in the Streets’, but there is still a chance to relive the video for real at the Stoke Fun Day this year on Sunday July 21.

Thanks to the support of Plymouth City Council, the Mayflower 400 Community Fund, the goodwill of the emergency services, and the cooperation of the community, this year’s Fun Day will spill out of the park and into Devonport Road itself.

The road will be closed from the Co-op in Stoke Village all the way down to the Indian Inn all day on Sunday July 21, with access only up to 10am.

Just for one day there will be local craft stalls and a music stage instead of a busy thoroughfare.

There will be clearly signposted diversions in place, for buses and other traffic, and visitors to the fun day are being asked to leave their car behind to keep diversion routes clear for emergency vehicles, and to consider residents.

As well as all the usual stalls to browse, and giant inflatable fun, there will be a full programme of music throughout the day, running from 11am to 4pm, with highlights from the Andy Quick Band, Riptide, and Street Factory.

Stoke is home to a host of different cuisines from around the world, so there will be plenty of delicious food on offer. And, the village is famous for its hospitality, although to ensure a proper family atmosphere there will be no alcohol consumption at the event, except in designated areas.

Local artist Anna Christie has been busy working with schoolchildren to make kites representing hopes and dreams of local people which will form part of a procession, as we remember the carnival days that Stoke Village enjoyed years ago.

There will also be a full programme of events in the park, including a pay as you feel cafe from the Real Junk Food Project and an acoustic stage run

by Wonderzoo with an eclectic mix of spoken word, folk and ukulele players, and of course a dog show run by our friends from the Gables Dogs and Cats Home.

And the Devonport Folk Session invite you to bring your voice, an instrument, or just listen at 2pm in the Stoke Inn Function Room.

So, as the song goes, “It doesn’t matter what you wear just as long as you are there – it’s an invitation across the nation for a chance for folks to meet.”

Local residents are also looking forward to the eighth annual Summer Fun Day at St Levan Park, running from 11 am to 5pm on Saturday July 13.

Entry is free and there are lots of free activities and live music entertainment right from the start and all afternoon.

Plymouth in the top 10 for Engaged Cities Award

Plymouth awarded Plastic Free City status in recognition of fight against plastic pollution

Plymouth has been recognised for its work alongside residents to create and implement solutions that improve lives and communities.

Its groundbreaking crowdfunding ‘City Change Fund’ has helped Plymouth become one of 10 cities to reach the finals for the Cities of Service Engaged Cities Award.

Over 100 cities submitted bids for the award which has a minimum $50,000 prize.

Plymouth and London were the only two European cities to make the shortlist.

The award, underwritten by Bloomberg Philanthropies, highlights the ways that cities are shaping the future with residents and allows cities around the world to learn best practices and implement similar solutions in their own cities.

The shortlisting follows on from the project’s recent triumph when it was awarded the highest accolade given by the Royal Town Planning Institute – the Silver Jubilee Cup. The City Change Fund uses Crowdfund Plymouth to distribute funds raised by developments through the Community Infrastructure Levy. Since 2015, the council has pledged over £250,000 on 60 projects with the Crowdfund Plymouth platform, raising over £1.5 million in the city.

Projects include many from social enterprises delivering projects that are close to local peoples’ hearts. Campaigns have included improving local green space, such as Collings Park Trust to a sonic art silent disco at Devil’s Point.

The council uses the Crowdfunder website to distribute the ‘neighbourhood proportion’ and pledges up to 50 per cent of a project’s costs (up to a maximum of £20,000), if they meet the legislative and Council’s criteria and priorities.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Housing and Cooperative Development said: “This means a lot.

“What we set up in Plymouth to make a huge difference to our residents is making people sit up and take notice around the world.

“The City Change Fund has helped us reconnect to communities and city groups in a way we never thought possible. It’s people power and helping our residents make some incredible events and ideas happen – through contributions made by developers.

Myung J. Lee, Cities of Service executive director said: “The 10 finalist cities show the power said:f working alongside their residents to improve lives and provide a model for others to follow.”

Cities of Service received more than 100 applications from cities in the Americas and Europe. With help from an esteemed group of experts, Cities of Service chose 10 finalists, whose solutions achieved impact by engaging citizens in a variety of ways including: impact volunteering, participatory design, crowdsourcing, and citizen-sourced data.

The Engaged Cities Award was open to cities with populations of 30,000+ in the Americas and Europe. Cities of Service will choose up to three winning cities and award a total of at least $50,000. Winners will be announced at CityLab in October.

Campaigners in Plymouth are celebrating as the city has been awarded Plastic Free Community status in recognition of the hard work of partners across the city to reduce single use plastics and tackle plastic pollution.

The accolade was confirmed by Surfers Against Sewage, and comes on the anniversary of Plymouth achieving Plastic Free Communities status for its historic waterfront, and the launch of the city’s Plan for Plastics.

The success was announced at the second birthday party of Environment Plymouth; the strategic, citywide ‘green’ network that has led on the recruitment of local plastics champions since December 2017.

The event will also see a celebration of the first anniversary of the launch of the Plymouth Britain’s Ocean City Plan for Plastics led by the city’s Plastics Task group.

The Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Task Group is made up of a wide range of partners from across the voluntary, statutory, public and private sector in Plymouth and is committed to reducing single use plastics and tackling plastic pollution.

The news also follows a successful Great British Spring Clean during March and April when almost 600 volunteers took part in litter picks and beach cleans across Plymouth, collecting 1079 bags of litter on the way.

The events were coordinated by local community groups Clean Our Patch and Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers and the oldest item found was a crisp packet dating back to 1973.

The campaign to raise awareness of society’s misuse of single use plastics has been warmly welcomed by everyone involved to date and shows no sign of slowing down.

Jackie Young, Environment Plymouth’s coordinator, said: We’ve been overwhelmed by the local enthusiasm for this campaign. It owes much to the inspiration of Sir David Attenborough and the ‘Blue Planet’ effect but local support has been inspirational too.

Since Plymouth’s Plan for Plastics was launched in June 2018: • 118 schools, community groups, families and individuals have signed up to be Plastic Free Community Ambassadors and 102 local businesses have signed up to be Plastic Free Pioneers as part of the work led by Environment Plymouth.

• 72 campaigners have taken part in awareness raising ‘plastic surgery’ workshops • 800 volunteers took part in 160 litter picks with local community group Clean Our Patch, and collected 4,0000 bags of litter.

• 748 volunteers have taken part in beach cleans with Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers and collected 261 bags of rubbish and 5,000 ‘nurdles’ (small plastic pellets used in a number of products).

• CATERed who provide school meals for 67 of Plymouth’s secondary schools have removed 8,000 plastic straws, removed disposable plastic packaging and moved over to biodegradable.

• A Sea Bin has been installed by Plymouth City Council at Queen Anne’s Battery as part of a pilot project to monitor plastic pollution with the University of Plymouth • A ‘code of conduct’ is being developed to enable all event organisers in Plymouth to demonstrate their commitment to reducing single use plastic.

• Funding for the campaign was secured from Sea Changers and South West Water.

• Water refill points are being installed at key sites across the city for people to fill up their reusable bottles and help reduce waste, as part of a joint project by South West Water and Plymouth City Council. Refill Devon now has over 30 refill stations across the city.

• Environment Plymouth have won national recognition for the campaign from Groundwork’s 2018 Community Awards and regional recognition from the Chartered Institute of Waste Management SW for related presentations on ‘The Blue Planet Effect’ and Single Use Plastics.

• Two Plymouth based projects, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and Blue Marine have recently been awarded national funding by Waitrose and Partners and Hubbub to tackle the biggest and the smallest elements of plastic pollution – ghost gear from the fishing industry and microplastics.

• Plymouth City Council has pledged to ban single use plastics on all its premises by September 2019. on the cake in a year that has seen a considerable change in attitudes to single use plastic and the impact it has on the environment.”

Rachel Yates, Plastic Free Communities project officer at Surfers Against Sewage said: “We have over 500 communities across the UK working to free where they live from single-use avoidable plastic, from the beach all the way back to the brands and businesses who create it. It’s not about removing all plastic from our lives, it’s about kicking our addiction to throwaway plastic and changing the system that produces it.

“Plymouth is the largest city to date to achieve the Plastic Free Approved accreditation, which means they have put in place the five core objectives of the campaign. We hope this accreditation will be a boost to their continued

efforts to tackle single-use plastic across the city.”

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene for Plymouth City Council said: “It’s been a fantastic year since Plymouth’s Plan for Plastics was launched and we are absolutely delighted the city has been awarded citywide Plastic Free Community status.

Jessica’s Armed Forces Day design is a winner

Eleven-year-old Jessica Horton from Widewell Primary Academy has created the winning design for this year’s Plymouth Armed Forces Day badge.

Pupils from schools across Plymouth have been competing to create a badge which represents the spirit of Armed Forces Day. Jessica’s winning design shows the iconic Smeaton’s Tower with the Mayflower ship in the centre, against a background of the Devon flag. Her creativity and colourful design really impressed the judges.

Jessica’s pin badge is now on sale at the Tourist information Centre on the Barbican and the Royal British Legion Pop In Centre on Armada Way for a suggested £3 donation.

The badge will also be available to buy at Plymouth Armed Forces Day on Saturday 29 June from the Military Kid’s Club (MKC) Heroes tent in the Royal Navy Village.

All money raised from badge sales goes to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Last year’s badge raised £1,625.

The badge competition is sponsored by Plymouth Military Kid’s Club (MKC Heroes), a tri-service support network for the children of service men and women. The group was formed in Plymouth in 2010 with now the biggest cluster in the country with over 60 member schools. In total, there are more than 10,000 members across the country.

Pete Ogburn, one of the founders of MKC Heroes, visited the school to break the exciting news to Jessica who was very proud to be awarded first place and her father, an army veteran himself, was delighted her design won.

An apprentice at a Plymstock surgery is celebrating after achieving a top rating in a key assessment.

Rose-Marie Marsh, 27, achieved a distinction in her business administration apprenticeship End Point Assessment, while training at Skills Group and working at Church View Surgery in Plymstock.

The End Point Assessment (EPA) is a brand new rigorous testing process forming part of the apprenticeship reforms that are being rolled out nationally. The EPA and Apprenticeship Standard replace Frameworks, and are designed to develop and test the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to succeed in the profession.

Rose-Marie, who lives in Beacon Park, said: “I wanted to pursue a career in the health care industry as it is very rewarding being able to help people. In my previous employment I always preferred the business and administrative roles.

“The opportunity to complete my business administration apprenticeship at the surgery was a perfect fit for me. I am very proud that I achieved a distinction and the result has boosted my selfconfidence in my abilities to perform well.”

For the Level 3 business administrator apprenticeship, Rose-Marie had to complete workbased assignments and run her own project. For this, she chose to create a monthly staff newsletter with the aim of improving internal communication and boosting morale with good news stories.

Rose-Marie also had to plan and hold her own meetings, including video conferencing, and take part in recorded verbal discussions and observations.

Activity day set to boost inclusive sport participation In preparation for the 2020 Special Olympics Mayflower 400 Games, local charities YMCA Plymouth and Special Olympics Plymouth & District (SOPD) are hosting a free activity taster day, aimed at engaging young people with additional needs to try new sports.

Held at YMCA Plymouth on August 8 the day will be host to a huge range of sports and activities for young people aged eight to 14 with an intellectual disability.

Stacey Ferris, inclusions lead at YMCA Plymouth said: “We‘re really excited to be hosting this day with SOPD and offer children and parents the chance to try the inclusive activities we offer and find out more about the opportunities in our inclusive sport club.”

On the day a variety of activities will be on offer delivered by coaches from YMCA and SOPD. Sports will include sitting volleyball, table tennis, climbing, basketball, trampolining, frisbee golf and much more.

Most of the sports include pathways of progression for young people to develop and enter competitions, including in the upcoming Mayflower 400 Games.

Chairman of Special Olympics Plymouth and District, Alan Stockdale, said: “The Mayflower 2020

games provide a great aim for the young people to get their first taste of competitive sport. Even if they ‘ve never tried a sport yet, I urge young people and parents to come to our activity day and give it a go. We ‘re ready to develop their skills and get them participating.”

YMCA and SOPD run a weekly multi-sport club throughout school term-time every Wednesday from 4.45pm to 5.45pm. The ‘YMCA Specials‘ club was launched to offer young people with intellectual disabilities pathways to competition and use sport to overcome barriers, challenge stigma, as well as supporting mental and physical health.

The club sprung from the success of Special Olympics Plymouth & District ‘s adults club, which has seen many of its members attending national and international games, proudly returning with impressive medal hauls.

Stacey said: “We really hope young people take the chance to come along to the free activity day and get involved. It‘s an exciting time for inclusive sport in Plymouth, and for young people with additional needs, they may well discover something that‘ll have a hugely positive affect on their life.”

Music students donate £100 to homeless in Plymouth

In recognition of their excellent attendance record, a group of City College Plymouth music students were recently awarded £100 in Sports Direct vouchers, which they have generously donated to Plymouth’s homeless community through local charity Shekinah.

Soo Brizell, head of strategic partnerships and contracts at Shekinah, visited the college to meet with the students and receive their donation.

One of the students, Phoenix St Jean, said: “The vouchers were awarded to everyone in our class because we had the best attendance record in our Academy of Media, Digital Industries and Performing Arts at the college, and we came to a group decision that we wanted to donate the money to charity.”

Clint Jones, programme lead for Creative Media Production at the college, suggested the students consider donating to a charity that works with the homeless as the Sports Direct vouchers would be particularly useful for this community. Clint said: “Shekinah seemed like the best choice, not only because they are right on our doorstep, but also because of the significant work they do across the city.”

Looking to the future, the students, who are currently studying towards the Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance and Production at the college, hope to continue their support for Shekinah. They suggested a fundraising student gig at the college might be possible.

Soo thought this was a brilliant idea and said: “An event that brings together your talents for the greater good of a community that is often forgotten could be really amazing!”

She wanted to hear what they thought were the most pressing issues facing the country at the moment and what should be done to tackle them.

The first in a series of events like this, around 8 young people came along for pizza and a chance to chat together to come up with the main issues they wanted to see addressed and their ideas for solutions.

With issues ranging from Brexit (unsurprisingly), housing and homelessness, transport and big items such as how connected the South West is to the rest of the country, the need for honest politicians and the importance of tackling climate change, it was a great opportunity for healthy debate and a safe place to share ideas.

Speaking after the event, Rebecca said: “Understanding the issues that are important to young people is vital for anyone looking to represent future generations in Parliament.

“It is really easy to meet young people and tell them what you think they think or make undeliverable promises like free university education simply to get votes. To actually sit down and provide space for debate and feedback over pizza enabled me to show how much I wanted to know their views and provided me with some really helpful insight Rebecca Smith chatting with the young people

into the issues we all face today, regardless of age or background.

“Hearing directly from voters is something I’m always keen to do, whether out on the doorstep, meeting with groups across the city or through events like these. I will keep on listening and collaborating with different groups so that together we can make Plymouth a better place and so that I can better represent the city and all those who live here.”

One of the young people who attended the event, Ruth, said: “As a young person who is interested in politics, it was really encouraging to see Rebecca take such an interest in the political issues that really matter to us as young people.

“The thing that we all agreed on was that politicians today need to be more honest with us, and listen to us more, and it was really promising to see Rebecca doing just this and championing the causes that we care about. I look forward to our future discussions to ensure our young people in Plymouth are listened to.”

Royal William Yard serves up tennis on the big screen Tennis fans are invited to take to the green at the Royal William Yard to catch the Wimbledon action live on the city’s only big screen.

Running from July 1 to 14, the Yard’s lawn will play host to a tennis extravaganza, complete with all the key matches screened live, deckchairs, plenty of Pimm’s and lashings of strawberries and cream throughout the tournament.

For those keen to get into the swing of things, a variety of tennis themed activities will be on offer throughout the Wimbledon weekends. Nuffield’s racquet coaches will be providing free tennis lessons on the lawn for the whole family to enjoy, taking place on July 6, 7, 13 and 14 from 9am to 5pm. Alongside a range of pop up activities and free face painting, visitors can expect plenty of summer fun!

To truly bring the Wimbledon experience to Plymouth, themed refreshments will be available from some of the Yard’s restaurants. Fishermen keen to help address the problem of marine pollution Commercial fishermen are acutely aware of the potential for marine litter to cause lasting damage to their catches and the wider industry, a new study suggests.

They also appreciate they can be part of the solution, but believe others – including the shipping and offshore industries – could be doing more to support their efforts to prevent items of marine litter ending up in our oceans.

The research, published in Marine Pollution Bulletin and funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, assessed fishers’ perceptions of Fishing for Litter (FFL) – an initiative that has been operating around the British coastline since 2005.

With hubs in Scotland and the South West of England, its aim is to reduce the amount of marine litter in the sea by physically removing it, while also highlighting the importance of good waste management among the fleet.

Researchers at the University of Plymouth and the University of Surrey spoke to around 120 fishers and other stakeholders, including boat owners and crew both signed up and not registered with the FFL initiative.

Overall, fishers said they often found marine litter in their hauls, adding it was extremely important to manage waste responsibly at sea and on the coast, and that keeping the sea and coasts clean was important to them.

They also believed similar attitudes were held throughout the fishing industry, adding that most fishers assumed responsibility for their own waste and for disposing of it in a responsible manner.

Those surveyed were also broadly supportive of the FFL programme, with scheme members reporting less environmentally harmful waste management behaviours at sea and in other contexts than their non-FFL counterparts.

Dr Kayleigh Wyles, now a Lecturer in Environmental Psychology at the University of Surrey, conducted the research while at the University of Plymouth.

She said: “Marine litter is a global, persistent, and increasing threat to the oceans, and there are many great initiatives which are currently working to address this. Fishing for Litter is a unique example, accessing remote and hard to reach marine litter.

“Our study shows it makes use of people in the right place at the right time, and empowers fishers to do something about a problem that directly affects them (both whilst at work but also during their leisure time). As such, it can make an important contribution to an issue which might often seem to sit across boundaries and policies.”

Associate professor (reader) in psychology Dr Sabine Pahl, from the University of Plymouth’s International Marine Litter Research Unit, added: “The responsibility for marine litter does not sit at the door of

any one industry or organisation. However, it does require a collective global change of behaviour and that is something we should all be working to address.

“Our study shows fishers are passionate about their seas, and ultimately this is a positive initiative that others – whether they

work on land or at sea – can emulate as we look to reduce the global impact of marine litter now and in the future.”

Talented hairdresser Stacey wins top award - and spends day at leading London salon

Former City College Plymouth hairdressing student, Stacey Stewart has recently spent a day in London, meeting famous hairdresser, Errol Douglas and observing how his Knightsbridge salon is run, after winning best in her category and the overall Inspire Hairdressing Photographic Challenge 2018 competition.

Replicating professional competitions, this contest requires students to create a style and submit one photograph for judging by Errol Douglas and managing director of Schwarzkopf Professional, Peter Belcher.

Mum of three Stacey, 33, was one of hundreds of applicants to enter the competition, submitted a photo of her model at the college’s annual Hair Show and claimed first place in the ‘Avant Garde’ category and was crowned the overall winner.

Stacey, who lives in Honicknowle, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and experience of the competition, and the standard of the entries gave judges a tough decision in choosing just one winner! I was so surprised to win, but I put it down to thorough research, hard work and the confidence I gained at college.”

To recognise her achievements, Stacey was awarded an engraved glass trophy for her individual category, and a larger engraved trophy, goodie bag, and the once in a lifetime opportunity to travel to London, meet renowned hairdresser Errol, and spend a day at his Knightsbridge salon, as the competition’s overall winner.

Stacey said: “I was honoured to meet Errol.

He was very friendly, warm and welcoming.

He congratulated me on winning the Inspire competition and encouraged me to enter more shows and competitions. He has even started following me on Instagram!”

During her day at the high-end salon, Stacey observed Errol’s team of hair stylists at work and gained insight into the workings of the business.

She said: “It was a fantastic experience! I got to see how hair services are tailored to individual clients and their specific requirements, and how they give each customer the best experience possible.

“The professionalism of the stylists and their attention to detail was something else I noticed - everything was done so precisely and to the highest standard. I hope that in the future I can apply their approach in my own work.”

Commenting on the salon itself, Stacey added: “It was so beautiful and grand, it was a bit surreal - it felt like something out of a page in a magazine.

It’s a whole new world of hairdressing and was so inspiring. I loved my time there!”

Stacey’s lecturer and tutor at City College, Victoria Stacey has supported her during her studies and throughout the competition process, encouraging Stacey to take part. Victoria said: “We are so proud of Stacey - she has put in so much hard work during her time at the college and it has really paid off! Stacey was an excellent ambassador for the College during her time in London and she has come back inspired after meeting Errol and his team!”

Looking to the future, Stacey hopes to stay in contact with Errol and take up his offer to visit the salon again once the interior has been refurbished.

She is also keen to continue her studies at City College, focusing next on beauty therapy.

Living to the audience of one...

I recently heard a great phrase from somebody very close to me. The phrase was: ‘that Jesus had a lot of fans, but not necessarily followers.’

It was in the context of the two of us discussing what authentic Christian spirituality looked like. This person had gone through a seriously traumatic and tough time but had not let go of their faith in Christ Jesus, despite the very real pain of their circumstances. At the same time because of that deep spiritual faith and connection with God they were also able to be real with their emotions going through the process, thus revealing their emotional and relational intelligence.

When it comes to an answer for people’s growing challenges with mental health, loneliness and issues of wellbeing, a connection with ‘our Creator’ provides an anchor in the incredible storms of life that we are all prone to experience at some time or other. Jesus Himself said: “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because

I have overcome the world.” John 16 v 33.

The phrase I mentioned at the start of this article can be likened to a football analogy: I know some really committed football fans who are absolutely dedicated to their clubs, but with respect to everybody who follows a club they don’t play at a professional level for the team.

Playing seriously on the pitch where the rules of the game are quite exacting, and every member of the team must train to experience the games being won or lost is a demanding process. Win on the pitch and you have more fans, lose and you’re in big trouble. It’s the stuff of life that besets us all.

That is why I recommend to our church members: “live to the audience of one” because Jesus is the only one who truly judges you fairly whether you win or lose with some of the choices that are Chris Cole

made on the journey of life. I’ve been around the church community for almost forty years and much of it is wonderful with many people trying their best to be a support to their teammates, but the church is still made up of people on a journey requiring increased healing, maturity and in need of constant training or what the church calls discipleship.

Christianity is a lifestyle that requires training and only truly works if the individual applies his or herself to the process. I believe that if you come to church with a hungry heart to know about God, you’ll receive a revelation of communication from His heart to yours, not just some religious information solely to your head. The essential issues of life come out of the spiritual heart of a human being.

When we know, experientially by God’s interaction with us our incredible worth to Him, then we are equipped to play a great game on the pitch of life and not just be spectators in the stands. God doesn’t want you religious, he wants you free and a life changer, winning in life despite how tough the game can sometimes get.

Council U-turn on plans to remove cobbles from West Pier

A petition signed by thousands of people has led to a U-turn by Plymouth City Council over plans to remove cobbles from part of West Pier.

The planned programme of work on the historic pier - which is home to the Mayflower Steps - originally allowed for the cobbles to be replaced by flat-cut natural stone.

However, after a public outcry Council Leader Tudor Evans issued a statement confirming that the cobbles will stay. He said: “The council has to repair West Pier so it does not collapse into the sea and to do that vital work we need to lift the cobbles.

“The plan was to re-lay the cobbles nearby on the Barbican, but over the last few days it has been made abundantly clear to me that people want to see the cobbles put straight back on West Pier once repairs have been made. I have listened to what has been said and I have made it clear to the project team that the cobbles must remain on West Pier - and they will.”

Apart from repairing the surface of the peir, the plans include: • New coordinated street furniture and lighting – natural stone seating and lighting columns will run along the pier’s north side and will include street furniture needed for events, such as power supply points, waste bins, bollards and a drinking fountain • A new cantilevered balcony at the east end of the pier for people to get a cracking view of the Sound and Mountbatten • A new scheme of interpretation highlighting the story of Plymouth as a key point of departure for the Mayflower and over the centuries.

Queen’s Honour for Ian

Plymouth’s Ian Sherriff, a leading figure in dementia care and research, has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Ian, who is Academic Partnership lead for dementia at the University of Plymouth and Ambassador for Alzheimer’s Society, received the award for services to people affected by dementia.

His commitment to campaigning for people who might not otherwise have a voice has been recognised around the world, most recently in Japan where he was invited as a keynote speaker to the Osaka National Dementia Conference. The Japanese delegation said he ‘lit the heart of Japan for dementia’ – and his impact has resonated in local, regional and national communities.

Locally, Ian’s work has helped Plymouth to become the first dementia friendly community in the UK. He was integral in setting up the Plymouth Dementia Action Alliance (PDAA), of which he is currently Chair, enabling a citywide approach to dementia awareness.

He delivers dementia awareness sessions to healthcare professionals and students, and at organisations including the BBC, Plymouth City Councillor Advice Surgeries Saturdays Meet your local St Budeaux Councillors Bowie, Winter and Wheeler. Two hundred young people from Plymouth, England and Plymouth USA will come together for a concert at Plymouth Guildhall in July.

Plymouth International Chorus 2019 takes place on Wednesday July 10 at 6.30pm and is the latest collaboration between Plymouth Music Education Hub and the Plymouth Public Schools Visual and Performing Arts Department, Mass, USA to bring young people together in song in the lead up to Mayflower 400.

The project is now in its fifth year and sees young people aged between 10 and 14 singing together - odd years in the UK and even years in story. Children can choose which artwork they would like to do and each session is always followed by a feast! We also have regular social events held on alternative Fridays which are held at the Oak Villa Sports & Social Club in Ferndale Road, Plymouth just down the road from Weston Mill Cemetery. There is a bus which stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall. These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle.

Members of our group have free access but nonmembers will be asked to pay £2. Anyone intending to come regularly to these meetings would find it more economical to pay the £12 single/£20 double annual membership fee, and would also be eligible to take advantage of our subsidised taxi scheme (£2 each way). Former coxswain Suzanne Sparrow’s proud moment

Marking the 75th Anniversary of D Day in Devonport Naval Base, Commodore Peter Coulson the Naval Base Commander invited a very special guest to lay a wreath at the Boscawen Memorial in HMS Drake, along with the youngest Naval Rating on the Base.

Suzanne Sparrow who served in the WRNS during WW2 was one of the first females to become a small boats coxswain. She joined in 1942 at 17 and at her interview was asked what category she would like to serve with. Suzanne said ‘boat’s crew’ and passed her examination as a coxswain.

“We were trained as seamen, learning all about knots and drill in HMS Drake,” said Suzanne. “It was really exciting. I was working out of Flag Staff steps in the Dockyard before moving around to Saltash Passage near the Tamar Bridge, where the Landing Craft base was.”

The charity is experiencing an exciting stage of growth, launching their own telephone line so that supporters and their communities can reach them directly and with ease.

It enables local people to connect and contact the charity for all information including fundraising, volunteering or education and training opportunities.

BASICS Devon are keen to help reduce emergency response times and are dedicated to being there anytime, anywhere in Devon to help ease pain and suffering in an emergency situation and to save lives across Devon, especially in their rural communities.

Last year BASICS Devon volunteer doctors responded to 422 emergency call outs across Devon and its surrounding areas, some of which are hard to reach rural incidents.

Students in running for top photographic award Four students from Plymouth are in the running to win the nation’s most prestigious student photography awards, as the shortlist has just been announced.

Stagecoach South West, the Presenting Partner for Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth, has announced a unique collaboration with author and illustrator Fiona Lumbers to create one of the special Elmer trail sculptures.

Set to be the biggest family friendly public art event in the region this summer, the sculpture trail, which takes place across Plymouth and surrounding areas, is inspired by the much-loved children’s character of Elmer the Elephant, created

by Devon born artist and author David McKee. The colourful parade of 40 unique elephants is tipped to attract 250,000 visitors, raising vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth who provide care and support for people with a life-limiting illness and their families across Plymouth, South West Devon and South East Cornwall.

Fiona said: “I’m so excited to be involved with Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth and to be supporting the work of St. Luke’s. It’s a real honour to be collaborating with Stagecoach South West on this project. My Elmer will feature the characters from my book ‘Clem and Crab’.

“The story explores themes of conservation and keeping our beaches clean – how lots of small actions added together can make a big difference.”

Fiona is in the process of creating her design at Elmer’s Big Parade ‘Herd HQ’ in Plymouth, the former Toys R’ Us store, and met with Stagecoach South West commercial director Karen Hodder to catch a glimpse of the design in its preliminary stages.

The restoration and reinterpretation of Plymouth’s historic Elizabethan House has moved into an exciting phase with building work beginning in earnest.

Led by Plymouth City Council, with additional funding support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic England, the Coastal Revival Fund and The Pilgrim’s Trust, it’s one of the key legacy projects for the city’s Mayflower 400 commemorations.

The first physical sign of the work will be the creation of a temporary site compound in the seating area at the end of New Street.

The compound will feature a small hoardings scheme which will display information about the history of the house.

Once building work is complete and the hoardings are down the seating will be reinstated and refreshed.

Scaffolding will be installed to the front of the building in July. Repair work to the external structure and oak timbers will then be carried out from August.

clean, strengthen the floors and undertake an assessment for the foundations of a new extension will be carried out over the summer.

Once these are complete further structural and repair work will continue throughout the autumn/winter and into next spring.

Construction work for the extension will also take place. A small, two-storey addition to the original building, it will house storage space, a staff kitchen and toilets.

ambitious plans for the Elizabethan House.

The business runs a store on Union Street, Stonehouse which collects unwanted furniture and supplies it to a wide range of customers, including people who have recently been made homeless. The funding and support from M&S will help with visual merchandising, local marketing and digital media, and outreach to more people and charities in the local area.

Alison Turner, chairperson of The Furniture Reuse Project, said: “This whole experience has been a great opportunity for us to get our name out there so that more people know they can come to us for help. The grant and skills support will help us to grow the service and support more people.”

The Community Business Challenge launched in the Liverpool City Region in 2018, as part of M&S’s Community Transformation Programme. The retailer is trialling a range of actions in cities like Liverpool and Plymouth to help tackle the issues that matter most to communities – such as unemployment, skill shortages, loneliness, mental health and wellbeing.

upscale production capacity and explore opportunities to make the business more environmentally sustainable. The grant from Power to Change will be used as investment in new industrial equipment, so that Makers HQ can support the growth of local textile and clothing businesses.

Sophie Glover, studio manager at Makers HQ, said: “It’s a real privilege to have been involved in the Community Business Challenge. This support is recognition of the great work we’ve already done at Makers HQ and the potential we have to grow the business further.”

St Saviours, a new cultural hub and community space based at the church hall on the Barbican, will enter into a consultation with Power to Change to assess how the trust can provide funding and support for a planned asset transfer and renovation of the building.

Matthew Pontin, director of St Saviours, said: “This support means a huge amount to us as we develop our plans for the building.

We’re very proud to have been a part of the Community Business Challenge.”

Marks & Spencer and Power to Change are working together to support community businesses to transform local economies by taking the Community Business Challenge around the country.

Following the launch of the Plymouth leg of the challenge in March this year, residents in Plymouth have been voicing their support for the shortlisted community businesses in the M&S store, on social media and online at www.communitybusinesschallenge.co.uk.

The finalists came together yesterday to showcase their work to a prestigious judging panel made up of M&S and Power to Change representatives. Following inspiring pitches from all five community businesses, each of them was awarded as follows: Nudge Community Builders were awarded the maximum grant of £10,000 and business skills support. Nudge, which brings empty buildings back into use in Plymouth, will use support from M&S to help with business planning, visual merchandising and income generation at its converted market space The Clipper on Union Street. The £10,000 funding from Power to Change will be spent on improving the customer experience through a stronger visible presence, improved signage, outdoor seating and by ensuring the space is more welcoming for families.

Wendy Hart, co-founder at Nudge, said: “It’s amazing to have been awarded this grant and business support. The whole challenge has been a great way of showcasing the positive difference that community businesses are making in Plymouth.”

Billy Ruffians was awarded £9,250 and business skills support. The business is a community-owned brewery based at City College Plymouth, and the support from M&S will go towards building its customer base and optimising the brewery’s supply chain. The grant from Power to Change will provide capital investment towards bottling equipment and EcoKegs so that Billy Ruffians can produce more great beer alongside creating social, environmental and economic impact.

Jack Witek, co-managing director of Billy Ruffians, said: “We feel humbled and privileged to have received this support. It really energises us to build the business and take our plans forward.”

Makers HQ was awarded the maximum grant of £10,000 and business skills support.

The business is a textiles sampling studio in Stonehouse which provides training to members of the local community.
