Life-saving defibrillator installed at care home

Detailed plans for new £49 million Forder Valley Link Road unveiled

Life-saving equipment has been installed at a care home in Derriford - and it will not only benefit residents but also the local community.

The defibrillator has been handed over to Abbeyfield’s Tamar House Care Home in Brest Road by Richard Oaten, assistant community responder officer for the South Western Ambulance Service Trust.

The equipment will be fully supported and maintained by the Trust and can be used for cardiac emergencies in the area.

All of the staff at Tamar House will be trained by the Trust in how to use the defibrillator.

Francesca Fletcher, care manager at Abbeyfield Tamar House, said: “At the moment, there are not too many defibrillators around our area and it shows that at Abbeyfield we take the care of our residents, visitors and staff seriously.

“Also if anyone is within 200 metres of Tamar House and phone the ambulance service in an emergency situation, they may well be directed to our premises where our staff would give them every assistance.”

Richard added: “As we all know, if anyone experiences a heart attack, the first few minutes before the ambulance arrives can be critical.

“Statistics show that for every one minute of delay before the heart is restarted correctly, the chances of survival decrease by 10 per cent.”

Residents and businesses along or near the Forder Valley have been given details of how one of the city’s biggest ever infrastructure schemes will affect them including the closure for 17 months of one of the main routes serving the area.

A series of public information events took place to give people the low down on the Forder Valley Link Road and how it will be built. The new road will provide a much needed key link between the A38 and the north of the city, where new homes and businesses are being planned as the city grows.

In order to carry out the work, traffic diversions will be needed. Most involve lane closures and contraflows but there will be a substantial road closure next summer – Forder Valley Road west will close for 17 months to enable the new road to be built up and to construct the new and enlarged junction as safely and quickly as possible.

A key feature is a new road bridge across Bircham Valley that will connect William Prance Road in Derriford to the junction of Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road. A larger, relocated signalised junction will be constructed at the Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road intersection as well as new walking and cycling facilities.

Improvements are also planned for the Forder Valley Roundabout to improve traffic flow and access for pedestrians and cyclists.

Once complete, the link road will help alleviate traffic on the A386 Tavistock Road and Manadon Roundabout, providing an alternative route to

the north of the city and Derriford which is home to key destinations such as Derriford Hospital, the University of St Mark and St John and the Plymouth Science Park.

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure said: “This is a huge project. Not only are we building a new bridge across a valley – which is a major piece of engineering – we are, in effect, lifting and shifting a junction up the road and raising it by five metres.

“The gains for the city are enormous. Once complete this road will be a new link between the A38 and the north of the city. It will help take the pressure off Manadon Roundabout and the A386 Tavistock Road and will reduce journey times and cut congestion.”

The landscape around the valley will change dramatically over the next few years, he said and added: “An awful lot of planning has been happening to make sure that any loss to the natural environment is more than compensated for. We are already planting the first of 14,500 trees, we are creating new ponds and have a huge range of measures that will improve the quality of wildlife habitats in the valley. We have an environmental team working with the contractors.

“We have spent months planning and designing how we can build this new link and to cause as little interruption as possible. We know this is going be inconvenient, particularly for those living in the wider Eggbuckland area, but wanted to give local people as much notice as possible that this is coming.”

The main scheme construction works are

expected to start this Autumn with work on the bridge as well as the junction.

Ahead of this, a number of utilities – such as broadband, electricity and water – will need to be moved and the project team is in touch with those residents affected.

The scheme is expected to cost in the region of £49 million. Earlier this year £22.56 million investment was confirmed by the Department for Transport towards to project with a further £4.7 million contribution from Highways England. The remaining funding will come from council and developer contributions.

Work is also expected to start on the Forder Valley (Leigham) Roundabout improvements in an effort to keep disruption down.

The short merge from the roundabout heading north on Forder Valley Road is being extended and improved.

Two lanes heading south are being extended and a short fourth lane on the southbound approach to the roundabout is to be added. An extra lane is being added on the roundabout itself between Forder Valley Road and the A38 eastbound slip road.

The subway under Forder Valley Road will be extended and walking and cycling facilities will be improved. These improvements will increase capacity and allow traffic to flow more smoothly, relieving congestion and queuing which currently extends back onto the roundabout and down the A38 westbound off-slip.

The Forder Valley Roundabout Scheme will cost about £8.8 million, with a £5 million contribution from the Department for Transport.

Family fun day Plymouth businesses battle for £10,000 award at Leigham Community Hall

A family fun day and summer fair is being held in Leigham in July.

The event takes place on Saturday July 6 at Leigham Community Hall between 11am and 3pm.

There will be something for all ages with bouncy castle, face paints, ice cream van and games for the children with a host of stalls for the parents including jewellery, handbags, scents, handmade soaps, hair braids, glitter tattoos, hampers and much more.

Making dough and raising dough!

Charity boss in 200 mile marathon run The chief executive of a local charity has his trainers at the ready and is set to run 200 miles in five days, to help raise awareness of the organisation where he ‘s at the helm.

A special, limited-edition, Help for Heroes tri-seeded loaf will be tickling taste-buds in Plymouth during June.

As part of the annual Bake for Heroes event, the Column Bakehouse in Devonport has risen to the challenge to create the Hero Loaf which will help raise funds for the charity.

The white sourdough bread contains pumpkin seeds, poppy seeds and linseeds, to reflect the Tri-Services and the ongoing need for support for those wounded, sick or injured in service.

But it won’t be around for long. The first batch of loaves will be available to buy for donations from the Column Bakehouse stall at Flavour Fest in Plymouth city centre from Friday May 31 to Sunday June 2.

It will then be stocked every Friday at the Column Bakehouse in Devonport Guildhall and Ocean Studios in Royal William Yard, Plymouth.

The final batch will be available at Armed Forces Day on Plymouth Hoe on June 29. It follows a recent YouGov survey, commissioned by the charity, that revealed many people are turning to baking to fight stress and to improve their wellbeing.

Natasha Mason, 43, from Plymouth is a keen amateur baker and when she was invited to bake her own Hero Loaf, she jumped at the chance: “I came down to the Column Bakehouse in Devonport a few weeks ago and did a day of baking with some other veterans.

“We all went away really happy. It was something completely different. Took you away from the mundane thought processes, gave us something else to focus on and brought us all together. We loved it.”

Natasha served her country for 19 years in the

Royal Navy. She began her career in the Naval Reserves in 1993 and fell in love with the Senior Service, joining full-time in 1994. She started off as a Communicator before becoming a Weapons Engineer.

She served onboard some of the Royal Navy’s biggest warships, including HMS Invincible, and saw conflict in Former Yugoslavia, served on ships supporting operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and took part in the evacuation of British personnel from Beirut.

But her career was cut short after a knee injury showed up a more serious condition: “During my rehabilitation it was found I had osteoarthritis and that was probably caused throughout the entirety of my career rather than just the one injury. But that coupled with an earlier back injury spelt the end of my career.”

“It was obviously a shock being told you have to leave. I was a single parent. You think ‘I’ve got a mortgage to pay. I’ve got my son to feed, bills to pay’. This was all happening 3-4 years earlier than what I’d planned. It was quite daunting.”

But Natasha had a dream: “I quite fancied being a lawyer. Lots of people told me that I should aim my sights a lot lower. I was a Junior Rate for all of my career, and I kept being told that was not a job that a Junior Rate does. But I thought ‘yes I can’. I left the Services in June 2013 and started at Plymouth University in September 2013.

“I’m a trainee solicitor now. I’ve completed my law degree. I did a Master’s in legal practise and I’m now a trainee solicitor at Wolferstans in Plymouth.”

help to begin her training – which the charity was able to provide: “I was talking to Help for Heroes about needing to do a Master’s Degree. I had a bit of shortfall in the funds for that. The course was an extortionate amount of money, but you can’t actually be a solicitor without doing it. So, I was able to apply for a grant to help me fund the remainder.”

Andy Stuart from Column Bakehouse said: “We believe Help for Heroes is a really important charity that does a lot of good work, especially here in Plymouth. We are neighbours with Help for Heroes, which is in the Naval Base, and we felt it was a positive step to be part of the work that they are doing.

“Baking is very much a therapy with a lot of different aspects. Some of it’s to do with the physical act of kneading and manipulating the dough, sometimes it’s about having that opportunity to work to a specific process.

People are going to take different things out of it depending on what is really important to them. Of course, they always know they can enjoy something delicious afterwards which is a real bonus.”

Dominic Spayne, CEO at Shared Lives South West, is planning on running from Barnstaple to Penzance with a pit stop at Plymouth Hoe to help spread the word about the work the award winning charity does and to celebrate national Shared Lives Week in June.

It‘s a double celebration as Shared Lives South West is also celebrating its 15th anniversary and is thriving, due to the unique model of care it offers.

The charity currently supports more than 400 adults - many in Plymouth - with additional needs and matches them with a carer. Its carers in turn open their family home to the person in need of support; it ‘s like fostering for adults.

Shared Lives South West supports people with a learning disability, mental health issues and illnesses relating to older age including dementia and it has recently been awarded an Outstanding rating by the Care Quality Commission.

During his week long run from June 17-21, Dominic will visit Shared Lives families who are hosting various events to cheer him along.

Day three will culminate with Plymouth carers meeting for Pimms and a picnic on Plymouth Hoe to cheer Dom on.

He ‘ll then continue on to St Austell and end the challenge with a big barbecue celebration in Penzance.

In recent months Dominic completed marathons in London and Boston respectively and is now focused on the gruelling challenge ahead.

“It will be good to meet carers and of course promote Shared Lives along the way,” said Dominic.

“There‘s no doubt there are some tough parts on the route, but I ‘m determined to get to Penzance at the end of the week.

“There are some great events planned and having staff, carers and people who use our services at various points on my journey will help the time go quicker.”

Holiday fun with Cabin Nurseries

Children from the three Cabin Nurseries in Plymouth joined together recently for activities and outings.

The children’s curiosity and sense of wonder and exploration was nurtured on a river and countryside trip.

Children were able to test their physical skills, balancing, swinging and sliding on the park equipment and then they squelched along the muddy river’s edge to discover strange shaped trees; dark curious caves; pearly white shells and slippery seaweed.

After a picnic lunch the children fed some chickens and were later introduced to different breeds of dogs that were staying nearby. They were different colours and sizes, as well as being long haired and short haired.

Finally the children had a run around and a bounce on the trampoline before getting the mini bus back to nursery.

unveiled by Plymouth University Plans to transform a landmark office block at Plymouth Railway Station have been unveiled.

The University of Plymouth is acting as a catalyst for the regeneration of the station by converting the 10-storey Intercity House for academic use.

The University has announced it will be an anchor investor in the development with plans to locate purpose-built academic facilities on the site, building on the University’s significant track record in educating health professionals for the region and beyond.

The University has submitted the first planning pre-application in the programme that will see the area around the station transformed into a fitting new approach to the city.

The application is for a change of use of the former Intercity House from offices to academic facilities by way of a major refurbishment throughout and a full external rejuvenation - which will become known as Intercity Place.

Intercity Place will house clinical skills facilities for the University’s Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Midwifery as well as additional educational services, enabling staff to be working together in one location to support the future health workforce.

University of Plymouth Vice-Chancellor, Professor Judith Petts said: “This forms an important part of the University’s ambitious plans which will transform the campus and transform university teaching and research spaces for the 21st century.

“The station scheme is an important part of these plans and will significantly improve this notable city landmark so that it becomes an exciting gateway into Plymouth.

The project has the backing of the Heart of the SW LEP, Plymouth City Council, the Department for Transport and the Cabinet Office, as well as Cornwall Council, Network Rail and Great Western Railway.

Leader of Plymouth City Council Tudor Evans said: ”This scheme is incredibly complex and entails radical change to the look and feel of the area around the station to create a modern and friendly welcome for the increasing number of passengers.

“The project is huge, complicated and needs a city approach, which is why I am so excited to see this application from the University now submitted.

“We’ve started a journey to completely transform the station to create a better sense of arrival. With public transport playing a huge role in tackling climate change, this journey is more important than ever.

railway station which, when finished, will massively improve the welcome for visitors and commuters arriving in Britain’s Ocean City.

Once planning consent is granted, work on Intercity Place is due to commence early next year and to be completed by February 2021.

Stuart Cade, director and lead architect at MICA added: “We are delighted to be working with the University of Plymouth on the exciting transformation of a prominent Plymouth landmark. MICA’s design transforms the 10-storey station building with a new gleaming bronze anodised, pleated facade that supports a low energy strategy for the high performing academic building.”

Mitch Tonks goes fishing for business Mitch Tonks, who runs the award-winning Rockfish restaurant group, spent the morning with a group of final year students at Plymouth University where they presented the results of their research project focusing on his business.

Mitch, who has an honorary business degree from Plymouth University, has worked with the University’s business and hospitality department previously and encourages other local businesses to get involved.

Mitch said, “Every time we collaborate with students at Plymouth University it has been incredibly rewarding, they work to a very high standard and are totally professional in their approach.

“They understood the brief completely and offered real insight into the business, giving us useful information from their research and really sound ideas that can be used by us immediately. Beyond Face at The Drum

Following the sold-out success of Mixed Grill, Beyond Face return to Theatre Royal Plymouth making their Drum performance debut with 2000 Stories.

Beyond Face have been making groundbreaking work in the city for over a decade from the grassroots of Plymouth’s cultural scene. Specifically focussing on artists of colour based in the Plymouth area, 2000 Stories is supported by Arts Council England and is part of the Mayflower 400 Culture Programme with Plymouth Culture. It’s the first project to come to fruition from the funding, one of eleven in total each inspired by the legacy of the Mayflower in Plymouth.

2000 Stories is a show about stories - the ones that have stayed with us, the ones we have forgotten and the ones we may have been forced to hear.

The show encompasses the current complex debate around authentication and ownership of other people’s stories. While 2000 stories don’t individually feature in the show there are multiple stories of a personal, fictional and political theme.

The interest in stories is modernised with the popularity of audiobooks, podcasts and other audio mediums breaking into the vast cultural offering available to us digitally every day.

Audiences can expect the trademark Beyond Face stamp on the show: surprising, intriguing theatrical work that challenges perspectives and how we see the world. With a through-line of political change, parallels to current affairs and a captivating performance, there’s plenty for audiences to get their teeth into.

Pilates classes launched at Manadon Hub

Pilates classes are now available at Manadon Sports and Community Hub every Thursday.

The classes are run by Pauline Barlow between 10am and 11am at the Hub and will be for mixed abilities - so everyone is welcome.

Pauline, who also runs regular classes at the Woolwell Centre said: “Everyone can participate as Pilates exercises can be modified or progressed to suit individual needs, and everyone will make progress at their own level and speed.

Simon’s 2,000 mile cycle marathon for charity

Keen cyclist Simon Pope from Derriford is undertaking a mammoth charity challenge this summer.

He’ll be cycling ‘Le Loop’, a charity challenge organised by the William Waites Memorial Trust, where amateur cyclists follow the exact route of Le Tour de France a week ahead of the professionals.

Unbelievably, it’s not the first time Simon is taking on this challenge, having first completed it back in 2012.

Simon, who is 51, said: “I’m incredibly passionate about cycling and love to set myself a challenge! Doing the route of the tour was hard enough the first time round, so I can’t quite believe I’ve signed up to do it again, but I know it’ll be an amazing experience - and hopefully will raise lots of money for a great cause.”

This year’s challenge will see Simon cycle 3,500km (around 2,174 miles) in 21 stages. There are more than seven climbs of over 2,000m involved, including the Col de L’Iseran, the highest paved pass in the Alps at 2,764m.

Starting in Brussels on Saturday June 29, the challenge will finish 23 days later with a spectacular ride through Paris having cycled through much of France.

As an IT Manager at EDF Energy, Simon has been busy fitting in training around his day job and is currently completing regular 100-mile rides across Devon and Cornwall. An avid cycling fan for the last 9 years, Simon is also a member of Plymouth’s YOGi Cycling Club.

Simon is aiming to raise £3,000 from this challenge, and having paid all of the costs of the trip himself, any money raised will go directly to the William Waites Memorial Trust. The Trust aims to support some of the most disadvantaged children and young people, by enabling access to sports, art and educational programmes.

Menopause day aims to help women take control of the change Only half of women who suffer from menopausal symptoms ever seek professional help. Sally Fletcher, a nurse from Derriford, is going through the menopause herself following cancer treatment and was shocked at how little information is available.

Now Sally has joined forces with local GPs, mental health specialists, nutritionists and local businesses to organise a day dedicated to the menopause for the women of Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

The event is hosted by Emmanuel Church in Mannamead on Saturday June 22, from 10am to 3.30pm.

Speakers will talk about the physical and psychological effects of the menopause as well as the effect the menopause can have on a woman’s identity.

Following a menopause friendly lunch, there will be workshops on sleep, nutrition, the workplace, HRT, relationships and re-inventing your life. Participants will also be able to see displays from Livewell Southwest, Plymouth Options and the Royal Osteoporosis Society.

Confidence about body image can be a casualty of the menopause, so Sally has invited Olwyn Friday of Revive Beauty and Esther Friday aka Girl Friday make-up artist along to the event to help inspire women, to promote the concept of self-care and encourage women in their busy, demanding lives, to take a little time out for themselves.

Sally’s message to women going through the menopause is clear. “Please don’t suffer in silence, help is available and you are not alone. So many of us are going through the menopause and I hope by coming together we can feel more in control of this stage in our lives,” she said.

Marine Academy Plymouth - new principal oversees a return to core academic values and behaviours Marine Academy Plymouth has gone through many changes since its inception in 2010, with perhaps its biggest yet just beginning with the arrival of new principal, Leigh Withers.

Since his appointment this spring Leigh has started shaping the school in a way he feels will make the school an educational establishment second to none in the country.

Leigh’s vision is to turn Marine Academy into a school unlike any other in Plymouth, starting with his sky-high expectations around behaviour. He firmly believes that students should conduct themselves well at all times, saying good morning and good afternoon to both peers and staff, holding doors open for others and conversing with each other politely during break and lunch.

Many may believe this to be old-fashioned, but at Marine Academy these values underpin everything.

New Ford Park exhibition will feature Plymouth’s lost churches Ford Park Cemetery’s latest exhibition is entitled ‘Plymouth’s Lost Churches’ and remains open until July 7.

The exhibits tell the story of the city’s beautiful churches which have disappeared over the years, due to enemy bombing or redevelopment.

The exhibition will be open for public viewing on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Local historian Graham Naylor will give a talk on the lost churches on May 22 at 7.30pm.

Tickets for this event can be purchased in advance from the cemetery office (weekdays only 665442), or on the evening at the cost of £3.

The heritage team will will be heading up a guided walk around Ford Park on Sunday May 26. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 2pm.

The exhibitions and walks are free of charge (donations welcome). The Visitor Centre cafe will be open for all these events and there is free on site parking.

Volunteers from Ford Park will be raising funds by running the Coffee Bar at Harewood House, Plympton from Monday June 3 to Friday June 7. Home made cakes, sandwiches and bric a brac will be on sale.

Friends of Ford Park are holding a Hog Roast and Victorian Fancy Dress event on June 15. Why not go along, join in the fun and dress as your favourite Victorian character. Entrance is 50p and the fun event gets under way at 12 noon.

Safeguarding our young people The community of Ernesettle is leading the NSPCC’s flagship Together for Childhood programme with organisations across Plymouth working with local residents to develop and test ways to best protect children. The Together for Childhood team provide the latest monthly update on its work to keep children safe from sexual abuse.

Ask any parent where they believe their child is least safe and the response is likely to be a place outside of the family home, perhaps a local park, woodland or street corner.

This was just the same through our discussions with the community in Ernesettle.

The hard reality is that more often than not child sexual abuse takes place within a private space, and this is something we’ll be highlighting as part of our Together for Childhood programme.

If people aren’t aware that this is the case, how can they help find solutions to the problem to prevent abuse from happening in the first place?

However, we need to address the initial concern of the community and Together for Childhood is based on starting with what the community feels is most important.

We want to help parents and children feel confident enough to ask the right questions to ensure all children are safeguarded in the right way.

We are starting our work by developing a

‘safe spaces’ project with young people and by looking at safeguarding in sport as these are priorities the community have raised.

Parents across the region send their children to after school activities and clubs assuming their child will be safe.

They’re likely to be shocked then that the adults they trust to supervise their teenagers can legally have sex with them if they are 16 or 17.

Clearly this is not right and it’s why the NSPCC is calling on the government to Close the Loophole.

The current loophole in the law puts teenagers aged 16 and 17 at risk of being targeted for sex.

Unlike teachers and social workers, currently sports coaches, diving instructors, faith leaders, cadet leaders and others are legally allowed to have sex with 16 and 17 year olds that they are responsible for.

This leaves young people, no matter where they live, vulnerable to being groomed on the pitch, places of worship or other extracurricular settings.

It’s why the charity has been campaigning

for it to become a crime for adults to have sex with those they supervise, and this call to action has been supported by MPs, parents, as well as those in a position of trust, such as sports coaches.

The Ministry or Justice is now reviewing this legal loophole, and we hope changes will be made. As part of our work with Together for Childhood we’re letting the community know that it’s okay to ask about safeguarding concerns they have or check what policies are in place to protect their children when they aren’t at home.

These important discussions have given us a real chance start to get to know the residents of Ernesettle and build on the strengths of the community, by attending local community events.

The next one we’re looking forward to is hosted by the Ernesettle Community Forum Fund. Its annual pasty and cider walk takes place on Saturday June 22 and we’re looking forward to further exploring the area. Plymouth’s new Lord Mayor takes up his role

Plymouth’s new Lord Mayor Coun Richard Ball and Deputy Lord Mayor Coun Terri Beer have officially taken up their roles.

Councillor Richard Ball has been Compton ward councillor since 2008 and was Deputy Lord Mayor in 2015/2016.

Councillor Ball was born and raised in Plymouth and apart from occasional absences due to his naval career, has lived here all his life. His wife Dianne will serve alongside him as Lady Mayoress. Together they have two children and three grandchildren.

Councillor Ball, said: “I am delighted to

start my term as Lord Mayor and honoured to represent the people of Plymouth.

“Plymouth is the city where I was born and raised and I am privileged to be asked to serve its people. I hugely enjoyed Lord Mayor’s Day and met many volunteers and charities that I look forward to supporting.

The turnout was fantastic and I hope residents had as much fun as I did.” Councillor Terri Beer will serve as Deputy Lord Mayor for the year.

A total of 250 registered players from Drake FC have been provided with newly designed kit displaying the Fine Tubes logo to be worn during matches and training sessions. The new kit will spread awareness about Fine Tubes among families, friends and supporters of the club and its players.

Drake FC was founded in 2016 and has grown in a short space of time to now fielding 18 separate teams, including two girls’ teams.

The young players range in age from under seven to 18 years old and play in the local amateur youth leagues. The Under 18 team were this year’s proud double winners of both the Devon Junior Minor Cambridge League and Cup and U12’s runners up in the league. Additionally, several of the youth teams have performed exceptionally well in tournaments with numerous wins and finals reached.

Plymouth awarded Plastic Free City status in recognition of fight against plastic pollution Campaigners in Plymouth are celebrating as the city has been awarded Plastic Free Community status in recognition of the hard work of partners across the city to reduce single use plastics and tackle plastic pollution.

Two research colleagues at Derriford are celebrating having recently won awards.

Huw Rowswell, a nurse consultant in Thrombosis, was recently named as Researcher of the Year by the British Society for Haematology (BSH) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

Held in Glasgow as part of the 59th Annual Scientific Meeting of the BSH, this was the first time that nursing and allied health professional staff had been recognised in this way.

Working alongside Dr Tim Nokes, consultant haematologist at University Hospitals Plymouth, Huw has published a number of articles demonstrating the impact that mandatory risk assessments and realtime feedback have on significantly reducing hospital acquired thrombosis (blood clots).

Together their work has helped to increase patient safety across the Trust.

Huw said “Receiving this award highlights the significant improvements that we, as a Trust, have made in preventing our patients from developing blood clots and improving their safety.

“We all have ideas and solutions as to how to improve patient experiences and outcomes, and as a nurse I am very lucky to have a supportive manager who encourages my involvement in research.”

Meanwhile a recent Level 3 graduate of the Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship programme, run by the Clinical Apprenticeship Team alongside South Devon College, has also been recognised at an awards ceremony.

Lucy Cadmore, a research assistant in Oncology, was awarded ‘Healthcare Support Worker of the Year’ by South Devon College. Nominated by her course tutors, she was presented with the award at a gala presentation evening held at the Imperial Hotel Torquay.

Taking part in the apprenticeship programme allows Lucy and her colleagues to be based primarily in a clinical area, with regular study days to gain a more in-depth knowledge and research base.

Lucy said: “I really enjoy working in Oncology research and I’m involved in lots of different trials. It was so lovely to win an award – I wasn’t expecting it at all. It’s spurred me on to hopefully become an associate practitioner in the future.”

The accolade was confirmed by Surfers Against Sewage, and comes on the anniversary of Plymouth achieving Plastic Free Communities status for its historic waterfront, and the launch of the city’s Plan for Plastics.

The success was announced at the second birthday party of Environment Plymouth; the strategic, citywide ‘green’ network that has led on the recruitment of local plastics champions since December 2017.

The event will also see a celebration of the first anniversary of the launch of the Plymouth Britain’s Ocean City Plan for Plastics led by the city’s Plastics Task group.

The Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Task Group is made up of a wide range of partners from across the voluntary, statutory, public and private sector in Plymouth and is committed to reducing single use plastics and tackling plastic pollution.

The news also follows a successful Great British Spring Clean during March and April when almost 600 volunteers took part in litter picks and beach cleans across Plymouth, collecting 1079 bags of litter on the way.

The events were coordinated by local community groups Clean Our Patch and Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers and the oldest item found was a crisp packet dating back to 1973.

The campaign to raise awareness of society’s misuse of single use plastics has been warmly welcomed by everyone involved to date and shows no sign of slowing down.

Jackie Young, Environment Plymouth’s co-ordinator, said: We’ve been overwhelmed by the local enthusiasm for this campaign.

It owes much to the inspiration of Sir David Attenborough and the ‘Blue Planet’ effect but local support has been inspirational too.

“We are also very grateful for Surfers Against Sewage’s guidance and the strength of the Task Group’s collaboration. Gaining Plastic Free Community status for the whole city is the icing on the cake in a year that has seen a considerable change in attitudes to single use plastic and the impact it has on the environment.”

Rachel Yates, Plastic Free Communities project officer at Surfers Against Sewage said: “We have over 500 communities across the UK working to free where they live from single-use avoidable plastic, from the beach all the way back to the brands and businesses who create it. It’s not about

• Water refill points are being installed at key sites across the city for people to fill up their reusable bottles and help reduce waste, as part of a joint project by South West Water and Plymouth City Council. Refill Devon now has over 30 refill stations across the city.

• Environment Plymouth have won national recognition for the campaign from Groundwork’s 2018 Community Awards and regional recognition from the Chartered Institute of Waste Management SW for related presentations on ‘The Blue Planet Effect’ and Single Use Plastics.

• Two Plymouth based projects, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and Blue Marine have recently been awarded national funding by Waitrose and Partners and Hubbub to tackle the biggest and the smallest elements of plastic pollution – ghost gear from the fishing industry and microplastics.

• Plymouth City Council has pledged to ban single use plastics on all its premises by September 2019. removing all plastic from our lives, it’s about kicking our addiction to throwaway plastic and changing the system that produces it.

Thousands join in tea dance celebrations

Thousands of people fulfilled a promise made during the Second World War by dancing on Plymouth Hoe on May 26 as part of the Lady Astor Statue Appeal.

As part of the project to raise a statue to the first woman to take her seat in Parliament, organisers threw a huge party to thank those who have helped make history - and make a pledge by Waldorf Astor come true.

The original tea dances were organised by Nancy and Waldorf Astor during the Second World War to boost morale after the city was bombed almost beyond recognition during the Blitz.

In the wake of this devastation the tea dances were held on The Hoe and Lady Astor famously joined those dancing. At the time Waldorf Astor said: “The people of Plymouth have danced on the Hoe during the darkest days of war. They will dance here again in peace on a Hoe which overlooks a city which has been planned for them, for a wider, freer, healthier, and more prosperous life.”

Up to 3,000 people - young and old alike gathered on Plymouth Hoe to fulfil that promise and danced again in peacetime.

Sailors from HMS Raleigh joined dancers of all generations and Brownies in tribute to the first woman to take her seat in Parliament and who served as Plymouth Sutton MP for 26 years.

The event was organised by the Lady Astor Statue team with Plymouth Dance and with the Drat Pack band playing a range of dance music from the 1920s through to the 1960s and beyond.

Among those who danced again was Doreen Willis, nee Blackler, aged 90 who can be seen in the background of the iconic photo of Lady Astor dancing with a sailor.

Project leader Alexis Bowater said: “Thousands of people turned up and it was our chance to thank the people of Plymouth who have risen up and so generously given their hard-earned cash to pay for a statue of

City council is shortlisted in national awards Plymouth City Council has been shortlisted in the Co-operative Council of the Year category at the Co-operative of the Year Awards.

The Co-operative Council award, sponsored by the Co-operative Councils’ Innovation Network, recognises the best practice demonstrated by local authorities and celebrates the great work delivered at a local level.

Plymouth is a co-operative council, with co-operation one of the key values in the Corporate Plan, ensuring that the council works together with partners in order to best serve the interests of the city and its communities.

The awards are organised by Co-operatives UK, the network for Britain’s thousands of member-owned businesses.

Hans Rosling died in 2017 after a long career as a health expert and educator - noted for his TED talks and YouTube videos.

For most people the world is poorer, less healthy and more dangerous than it is.

In Factfulness, his last book, Hans demonstrates how wrong perceptions can be and sets out 10 tools to help everyone think more positively about human progress. He shows how the brain is wired to make things look worse than they really are, and provide tools to think about the world more clearly.

It’s got lots of graphs and statistics, but it’s an engaging book, full of interesting and moving stories and facts from Hans Rosling’s life.

For example, that the number of guitars in the world has risen from 200 per million people in 1962 to 1100 per million in 2014, and learn to think about all the plane crashes that didn’t happen.

The Global Book Club meeting is free and open to all. It takes place on Wednesday July 10 between 7pm and 8.30pm at Rolle Building Room 117, University of Plymouth.

All steamed up in Southway!

Plymouth Miniature Steam is often referred to as Plymouth’s best kept secret.

Hidden away in a nature reserve in Southway valley is a ‘live steam’ miniature railway, which is open to the public for rides on the first and third Sundays of each month from April to October.

Trains travel through woods, over bridges and through tunnels to arrive at the station in time for teas and cakes.

It’s a popular delight for young and old alike. In fact there are as many grandparents as youngsters who visit to see the trains and anything else of a model engineering nature that may be on display at the time.

Plymouth Miniature Steam is a dedicated group made up of model engineers, steam enthusiasts and railway nuts who have over many years developed the railway as part of their hobby.

Members have built the steam engines, diesel electrics, and the rolling stock which carries the passengers around the track, which covers almost a kilometre.

Many of the members have built and own their own engines, some also have large scale traction engines and steam engines of many different types.

While some of the model engineers have their own workshops, work and training is also being carried out at the local Tor Bridge High School workshops where an apprenticeship scheme is being run to introduce youngsters and adult members into engineering and practical skills.

It’s a surprise for many visitors to discover that the miniature railway has been in Southway for nearly 30 years.

The railway was opened in 1990 by the then Lord Mayor Councillor Dennis Dicker with the group’s first locomotive which is aptly named ‘Hernia’ as most of the workers claimed they had one after building and carrying the engine!

The club has been in the Plymouth area for many years and references to large exhibitions in the city centre go back as far as 1947. The club originally had a raised level track in Central Park, from about 1970 but then had to move location during the 1980s due to the building of the Mayflower Sports Centre.

Construction of the Southway Railway sometimes called ‘Goodwin Park was led by the then chairman Sandy Goodwin and the site is named after him. The minor miracle of change that has taken place over 35 years is amazing.

The site was originally used as a council tip and after the Second World War had been used to deposit bomb damaged rubble from the blitzed city centre.

Sandy Goodwin organised over 3,500 tonnes of topsoil and earth moving equipment over two years to achieve the landscaped woodland that the club now enjoys with mature trees and dense undergrowth that encourages wildlife.

Thankfully the Manpower Services Commission, an organisation set up in those days to help train and find employment for the unemployed youth, helped with some of the track laying work and lighter landscaping.

Today it is a vibrant club which provides an appreciated service to the community in Southway by caring for the woodland associated with the railway, and also a source of fun and entertainment during its public running days for children and the childlike who appreciate little trains. We would ask that Visitiors to the area are asked to be mindful of the neighbours and not cause a nuisance from noise or careless parking, and also not disturb the wildlife and parkland.

Award for Derriford’s unique cancer outreach work at Dartmoor Prison An outreach cancer support programme, run by the Derriford-based Mustard Tree Macmillan Cancer Support Centre to support prisoners at Dartmoor Prison, has won an award from the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).

The team were presented the first place award for ‘Best Clinical Team’ at the RCGP’s Health and Justice Summit earlier this year by the RCGP Secure Environments Group, for their commitment to delivering a high standard of care within the health and justice system.

“We started a pilot project to assess the level of cancer support provision for patients in prison,” explained Annie Charles, project manager for the Mustard Tree at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. “We quickly realised that there was a significant gap in supportive care for detainees living with a cancer diagnosis, or affected by cancer of a relative.”

The Mustard Tree Centre is situated on Level 3 of Derriford Hospital, opposite the entrance to the Royal Eye Infirmary. Support is available to anyone affected by cancer, including relatives and carers of patients, at any stage. However, it is not currently possible for prisoners to make use of this facility.

Inspired by a particular patient, and determined to address the perceived inequality, Annie set out to create an outreach programme, with support from colleagues at the Mustard Tree.

In collaboration with both the healthcare and prison team at HMP Dartmoor, Annie now visits the prison once a month, offering one-to-one support and advice consultations to individuals. These visits provide a private and confidential space for patients to speak openly about their worries or concerns, and Annie is able to provide emotional support, help with decision-making, offer a care plan and signpost to additional services.

“It’s all about bringing the Mustard Tree, and all it offers, to them,” said Annie. “Being diagnosed with cancer can be incredibly frightening, and individuals in prison can feel very isolated and experience increased levels of anxiety. We’ve had some really good feedback so far; with patients reporting that they have found the support ‘vital’ and ‘invaluable’.”

In addition to individual appointments, the programme also offers a telephone line that both those in custody and their relatives can call for support and information, access to Macmillan Cancer Support information booklets, education on a range of health and wellbeing topics, and liaison with the individual’s clinical team.

As a result of the collaboration, the healthcare team at HMP Dartmoor have also started running an in-house support group for those living with cancer and developed a ‘buddy’ system.

Raising awareness of the help available at the Mustard Tree has encouraged relatives of prisoners to seek support, too. One family member commented: “I’ve been so worried about my son’s health, and didn’t feel I could talk to anyone because no one knows he’s in prison. I’m so grateful for the team’s help and kindness.”

“We’re really pleased with the recognition for the work we’ve undertaken,” said Judy Horne, programme assistant who supports the project with Annie. “We aren’t aware of any other UK project delivering this type of supportive care, so we are now hopeful that this programme can be replicated across the country, to help even more people living with cancer while in custody.”

Scouts rewarded for life skills Interest in Scouting has increased significantly in recent years with waiting lists now in place to join.

The Plymouth District, which covers everywhere west of the Plym, now has over 800 young people involved in its programmes, supported my 300 adult volunteers.

At a recent event to celebrate the highest accolades in scouting, District Commissioner for Plymouth, James Littlejohns, spoke of his heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who form the backbone of the Scouting movement.

He said that Scouting is indeed a force to be reckoned with with 11 out of the 12 astronauts who have walked on the moon having been Scouts!

The recent awards ceremony, held in Four Greens Community Trust Building in Whitleigh, honoured the young people who had recently completely Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards through Scouts and to bequeath the Queen’s Award for Scouting, the pinnacle of awards for Scouts.

Vice Admiral Sir Richard Ibbotson, one of Devon’s Deputy Lord Lieutenants, presented the awards and spoke of his admiration for Scouting, both as a former head of the Royal Navy’s training organisation and as chair of Trustees at the Torbay and South Devon NHS Trust where he sees the added value of achieving such awards in future careers.

Scott Fearn was given the Commissioner’s Commendation and the Scouts Dragon Award for camping out every month in the year, and volunteering to support a group of DoE candidates who were cycling over three days for their awards and desperately needed another person to validate their trip.

It was clear the young people loved what they do! Scott seemed to be more than happy under the stars, and Dino, who is studying A levels at Hele’s School and wants to attend drama school explained that Scouting was a ed by our Be amaz great experience. le events b i d incre “I’ve been involved since I was five,” said Dino. “I’ve made lots of friends and learnt things I’ll hold onto for life - everything from social skills to fire making.”

Reunion for swimming community

A reunion for who people have been connected with swimming in Plymouth over the last 60 years is taking place in June.

The reunion is for anyone who has been involved with any aspect of swimming either as a swimmer, diver, water polo player, committee member, coach, fundraiser or volunteer.

At previous reunions people have come from as far afield as New Zealand, as well as various parts of the UK. This year swimmers from London, Oxford and several other places around the country, including Devon and Cornwall, have confirmed they are attending.

The reunion is being held at the Caffeine Club, Tavistock Place on June 22 starting at 7pm. Attendees are welcome to bring a friend or family member for an event which promises to be a night of nostalgia.

When slowing down is important...

Slow down. I heard those words at 5am recently. It was in that quiet, inside space where sometimes words drop like whispers of wisdom and pull you up short before you have time to edit them.

Some may say it was the voice of conscience, or self-talk; some may say it was the ‘still, small voice’ of God who speaks to us in the deepest places. Take your pick, but for me I’m going with the still small voice.

Slow down. Funny thing to hear, seeing as I’d just woken up. I lay still, thinking over the last few days.

I’d taken time out, deliberately to regain lost resources of patience, good temper and kindness. My colleagues at work were very pleased I was doing this. Family too.

Slow down. I thought I was, gardening and occasionally thinking of the ‘bigger picture’ of where the business is going outside of the micro detail. But the Voice was softly persistent.

Slow down. I had enjoyed the end result of the work in the gardens, yet that sense of something missing still remained.

As I lay there quietly, another question arose out of my heart: ‘Did you enjoy the process?’ The answer – No. I hadn’t enjoyed that very much. I was looking forward to the end of hours of work when I could sit back, crack open a beer and relax in the results and say ‘Aaaaaahhh that’s better.’

Slow down. I was so fixed on the goal that I treated the process as just the way to get there as fast as I could. I had been blessed to take some precious time, time that can’t ever be recovered, Ian Pilkington and instead of enjoying that time I had ploughed through it unheeding.

I have no recollection of whether it was warm, sunny (it was) or even if the birds were singing.

So, I’m slowing down. I’ve noticed, as I slow down, that my responses to my children are different. Instead of barking with just enough edge to get their attention and get that job done, I’m a bit gentler.

In that space, my youngest (seven going on 16) has started to make her own choices to help around the home and to simply do what she’s asked.

Not always (oh Heaven!) but enough to make me realise that when I shortcut quickly to the barked command in order to get the job done, she hasn’t even time to grow in her own choices. Slow down, indeed.

Thinking back over the years bringing up her older brothers, I marched them through life from goal to goal; at times I treated relaxing as a task.

Last word goes to the Good Book, a promise that there’s a time for all of it and there’s Someone who can replace those lost resources: ‘(God) gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.’

Calling all Plymouth choirs!

Mayflower 400 needs you Do you lead a choir or singing group? Your group could be part of a momentous, global event on Plymouth Hoe for the Mayflower 400 commemorations.

2020 is the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage, one of the most influential journeys in global history and a defining moment in the shared history of Britain, the US and the Netherlands. Plymouth was the Mayflower’s final departure point in the UK and the city is the lead partner in the commemorations.

As part of Mayflower Week, a major four nations ceremony is being planned for Wednesday 16 September 2020.

The ceremony organisers are looking for existing choirs and vocal groups from Plymouth and the surrounding area to take part in the event. While event details are being kept under wraps for now, there will be a new piece of music for the chosen choirs to learn and perform during the ceremony.

A wide range of singers are wanted to create a stunning musical performance. This includes people of all ages, backgrounds and differing experience levels – from beginners to fully trained singers.

The event offers the chance for a significant number of people to be involved, but to ensure the right balance of singers, choir leaders must complete an online application form for their group to take part.

Applications must be submitted by Sunday June 9 and all choirs will be notified of the outcome at the beginning of July 2019.

Choir leaders will be required to attend a session to learn the piece of music in January 2020 and then teach it to their groups during normal rehearsals. There will be a full rehearsal in September 2020, just ahead of the main event.

Daredevil Rosy flying high Dame Hannahs supporter Rosy Holland is bravely celebrating her 70th birthday with a Wing Walk!

Having celebrated her 60th birthday with a flight in a Tiger Moth, daredevil Rosy was keen to take on a new challenge to celebrate her 70th.

The Wing Walk takes place at Bodmin Airfield on July 2.

As she approached her big birthday, Rosy decided that she was not ready to slow down yet and wanted to take on a new challenge. She decided to support Dame Hannahs when she met a young person helped by the charity and also read about the Wing Walk in the press. Rosy retired from teaching 15 years ago and has led a busy and active life ever since.

Rosy has already raised £3,000 for Dame Hannahs but is still busy fundraising. In all her fundraising efforts she is supported by her husband Ken and children Andrew and Clare and their families.

Keen photographer Ken has given some photography presentations of their recent trip to India and also raised money for Dame Hannahs.

These meetings start at 10.30am and end at 1pm, on the second Friday of the month many buses stop outside the Co-op and if you come by car, parking is usually available. We also have regular social events held on alternative Fridays which are held at the Oak Villa Sports & Social Club in Ferndale Road, Plymouth just down the road from Weston Mill Cemetery. There is a bus which stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall. These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle.

Members of our group have free access but nonmembers will be asked to pay £2. Anyone intending to come regularly to these meetings would find it more economical to pay the £12 single/£20 double annual membership fee, and would also be eligible to take advantage of our subsidised taxi scheme (£2 each way). Members are also able to enjoy our regular meetings when we have short mat bowls, darts and other activities, and come to the two meals out every year. Plymouth Play Association Plymouth Play CIC and scrapstore is open to everyone. We collect ‘stuff’ destined for landfill from businesses, factories, shops and individuals.

Basketball England has announced that Slam Jam, a revolutionary new grassroots basketball programme which aims to introduce the sport to primary school aged children across the country, is coming to Plymouth.

Slam Jam, which has been created in partnership by basketball and educational experts, is a landmark programme for Basketball England, representing a notable investment into the grassroots level of the game.

Slam Jam will be delivered in both school and community locations in Plymouth with fun-filled sessions lasting between 45-60 minutes.

Running for six to twelve weeks, it has been designed to provide children with their first experience of basketball and an achievable (or cake for celebrations!) and a chat. Targeted specifically at seven to 11-year olds, children have been involved in every part of Slam Jam’s design, from choosing the mascots and characters to developing the games and drills which form the sessions.

Over 1,000 children have already enjoyed the benefits of Slam Jam during a pilot period earlier this year, with 97% of participants saying they want to continue playing the game. Basketball England is aiming to introduce 180,000 new children to basketball through the programme.

City date for comedy legend Sir Lenny Henry

Comedy legend Sir Lenny Henry will be appearing in Plymouth later this year.

Lenny Henry is one of Britain’s best-known and celebrated comedians, with a career which began with cult stardom on children’s television including writer, radio DJ, TV presenter, co-founder of Comic Relief and award-winning actor.

He will bring his latest show ‘Lenny Henry: Who Am I Again?’ to Plymouth Pavilions on November 10.

In the first half of the evening, Lenny will take the audience through a jam session of funny and sad memories and stories - from growing up in the Black Country, puberty, school, friendship, family secrets and unashamed racism. With his mother’s mantra of

‘H’integration’ echoing in his ears, Lenny will recount setting out on his rollercoaster ride of a career - but at every stage wondering: Am I good enough? Is this what they want?

In part two, Lenny will be interviewed by friend, broadcaster and author Jon Canter, for further insights into his life and career, followed by questions from the audience. Dartmoor Rambling Club The Dartmoor Rambling Club is a long established Rambling Club based in Plymouth. We have a regular programme of walks on alternate Wednesdays and at some weekends. The Wednesday walks generally use public transport from Plymouth City Centre to the start of the walk. Wednesday walks are usually about 8 to 10 miles on Dartmoor or on the coast and are taken at a pace to suit the participants. Knitters raise £600 for local life-saving charity

A group of knitters in Plymouth have raised over £600 for BASICS, the local lifesaving charity.

The group, which meets at Chocaccino in the Barbican, first heard about BASICS - which stands for British Association for Immediate Care Schemes - in April last year and after finding out more about the charity’s work decided to fund raise for it.

Jude, the Chocaccino knitting group organiser said: ”Although the Knit Group has been going now for several years, it was only three years ago that we discussed the issue of fundraising.

“In 2016 we each produced a few Poppies some in crochet and some knitted. By the end of the venture we produced 100s of them raising

around £300 for the British Legion.

“We then decided to support on an animal charity called the Cinnamon Trust. During 2017 we raised £200 to enable them to upgrade some of their facilities in Hayle.

“So early in 2018 we had a group discussion as to who we would next support? Fatima, in her role as a GP, told us about all the amazing stuff BASICS Devon guys do. So that was us sold!”

Jude said they raise the vital funds by knitting, crochet or sewing small seasonal items such as Easter chicks, bunnies, daffodils as well as Christmas items and hearts for Valentine’s Day. Their efforts this year were boosted by Joanne, one of the group’s members, who bravely had her hair shaved off, raising over £300 in the process to boost the overall total.

BASICS Devon volunteer responder Dr Marc Epps from Plymouth went along to see the ladies to thank them for their hard work, as they reach an amazing £606.50 and will continue to support BASICS Devon this year.

He said: “This donation will make a real difference to the local community. It will help to ensure the volunteer doctors have current medical equipment and can continue to provide immediate access to specialist emergency medical care at the scene of illness or accident.”

BASICS Devon want to say a huge thank you to the Chocaccino Knitting Group for their continued support and look forward to the rest of the year with them.

Plymouth people are being invited to find out about one of Plymouth’s best-kept secrets at the Ernesettle Pasty and Cider walk on Saturday June 22.

The walking route is designed to showcase the area’s local highlights, including the ruins of a 16th century manor, an ancient woodland, community orchard, solar array and fantastic views of the River Tamar.

Walkers will set off from St Aidan’s Church, following a five mile circular ramble at a comfortable speed, with rest points at eight cider stations for a cooling glass of Tamar Valley cider (or apple juice for children) on route.

At the finishing point walkers will be rewarded with a welcome rest in the shady church hall, and a delicious Ivor Dewdney’s pasty.

Last year’s walk was enjoyed by volunteers and visitors alike with temperatures hitting a glorious 23 degrees and not a cloud to be seen.

For many walkers the experience was a window onto undiscovered highlights of the local area.

Ray Parker, commented: “I very much enjoyed it and met some nice people. I have found lots of information about the area I didn’t know before. It was interesting to find out about the solar farm, the orchard, and a lovely walk through the woods. The glass of cider around every corner was an added bonus!”

All are welcome to join in the fun on Saturday June 22. Walkers can set off between 12 noon and 2pm from St Aidan’s Church, Ernesettle and can complete the route at their own pace. Tickets cost £6 for adults, £3 for children and can be obtained from Sally Walker: salwalker@blueyonder.co.uk

It’s a grand day out at Aardman for Plymouth students!

Council backs exciting plans for Barden factory in Estover New owners, new plans and a new direction for one of the city’s key engineering firms – that’s what the Plymouth City Council leader heard when he met the new owners of the saved Barden factory in Estover.

Thirty animation students from Plymouth College of Art have visited Aardman Animations in Bristol for a day of workshops with the internationally-acclaimed animators.

Among the party of BA (Cons) Animation students was Elliot Rowe, a former carpenter and boatbuilder from Elburton, who was so enthused by the hands-on skills offered

by Aardman that he returned to Aardman Academy soon after for further modelmaking training.

The students attended a workshop led

by Jim Parkyn, a senior Model Maker with almost 20 years industry experience. He taught students the process of how to model the Aardman character Morph, first seen on television in the 1976 BBC show Take Hart.

He has also worked on animated movies including Shaun the Sheep, Chicken Run and The Pirates!

A second workshop was led by Neil Pymer, a creative director at Aardman working on the studio’s interactive and immersive projects. Neil, who was nominated for a BAFTA for his work on BBC’s Escargot Escape Artistes, taught students how to build and prototype their own interactive stories. Elliot said: “I’ve been a fan of Aardman Animations since watching Morph on Art Attack as a boy.

Visiting the Aardman studios was a dream come true for me, particularly when senior model maker Jim Parkyn led a workshop on how to make our own Morph models.

“Growing up I struggled at school because of my dyslexia and my family felt like I needed a practical trade, so as a result I became a fully qualified carpenter and boat builder. But I’ve always had a passion for art and animation, and Plymouth College of Art have helped me discover the worlds of stopmotion animation, set and prop fabrication.

I’d been working in carpentry since I was 14 years old. “ I’m 27 now, preparing to graduate in BA (Hons) Animation, and because of the skills I picked up along the way I feel like now I can design and build anything.”

Tim Pattinson, senior lecturer and programme leader for BA (Hons) Animation at Plymouth College of Art, said: “One of my first teaching jobs in North America involved bringing a studio pipeline model for animation into a Higher Education environment - creating a pipeline for creating and delivering animation assets to deadline, in the same way that students will be expected to when they go on to work in the industry.

“A layout artist from Disney features came to visit us and was blown away by how successfully we’d implemented that live studio model within the classroom.

That’s what I’m putting into practice now at Plymouth College of Art, preparing students for work at the big animation studios, which is why we’re so fortunate to have an internationally-respected studio such as Aardman based in Bristol, so close to us.

“We’re very grateful to everybody at Aardman for making us feel so welcome and giving students such an excellent opportunity to network and learn invaluable skills.”
