Brandon Stanton, the photographer behind Humans of New York, will come to Cornell on Sept. 11 to speak about his experiences creating the widelyfollowed blog, the Cornell University Program Board announced today. With a following of nearly 15 million on Facebook, 4.7 million on Instagram and 335,000 on Twitter as of Monday afternoon, Stanton’s blog has also expanded to become a New York Times bestselling book. Stanton, 31, created the blog in 2010 when he set the goal of photographing 10,000 New Yorkers, according to his biography. The captions and short stories that often accompany Stanton’s photos “provide a worldSTANTON wide audience with daily glimpses into the lives of strangers in New York City.” However, Stanton’s work has not been confined to the borders of New York City. Officials:Talents, Leadership Abilities Of Class of 2019 to Enhance Cornell By ANNIE BUI Sun Managing Editor
As members of the Class of 2019 begin their first day of classes on the Hill, University officials say the new students will enhance Cornell through their “proven academic talents, intellectual curiosity and leadership skills.” Cornell received 41,900 applications for admission to the Class of 2019 and extended offers to 6,315 applicants in March, according to the University. The overall admit rate — 15.1 percent — makes this year’s admissions cycle the second-
most selective in University history. Additionally, with students of color comprising 46.2 percent of the Class of 2019, this year’s freshman class is Cornell’s most racially diverse “since the university began keeping records on race in the early 1980s,” according to a University press release. Jason C. Locke, associate vice provost for enrollment, said in a press release that the Class of 2019’s makeup is indicative of Cornell’s engagement efforts. See CLASS OF 2019 page 4

Quoting Becker, President Defends Higher Education By GABRIELLA LEE Sun News Editor
President Elizabeth Garrett defended the freedom institutions of higher education operate under by outlining the responsibilities universities have to its students, its faculty and society as a whole in a Washington Post blog post Monday. “We in higher education have been on the defensive lately, amid persistent and legitimate concerns about the rising cost of college education, its purpose and its value,” Garrett’s column began. “It is time to look at higher education through a different lens — one framed by the inseparable qualities of freedom and responsibility,” she continued, referencing a historic 1943 address given by Cornell professor Carl Becker describing the character of the University.
