PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through fall, and what a successful season we are having! Between learning from CRE professionals at various committee-led programs and events, Leadership 2.0 and Young Leaders Professional Development Program sessions, connecting with chapter sponsors for our annual appreciation event, or enjoying the Golf Committee's Annual Charitable Golf Tournament, our New England Chapter members know how to make the most of their membership and stand for CoreNet Global’s core values to Connect, Learn, Grow, Belong - and an additional pillar that I have also focused on during my Presidency, ‘Give Back’.

In the spirit of the upcoming Holiday Season, I’m pleased to highlight and celebrate just a few successes since our last update, related to ‘Giving Back,’ that The New England Chapter of CoreNet Global has achieved – please see inside of this newsletter for more detail on the below and the hard work of our committees: •

The Golf Committee’s hard work at the 2023 Annual Charitable Golf Tournament on October 5th raised more than $13,000 for The Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston!

The Community Reinvestment Committee helped to facilitate furniture donation and create a Maker’s Space at The Boys

•

The University Relations Committee sponsored two students to attend the CoreNet Global – North American Summit in Denver and has been visiting local colleges and universities this fall, discussing CRE careers and CoreNet Global – New England Chapter benefits.

I was thrilled to join more than 85 of our New England Chapter in Denver from October 28th-30th for CoreNet Global’s North American Summit. The 3-day annual conference welcomed approximately 2,000 CoreNet Global Members from around the world, and was comprised of multiple panels, presentations, and networking opportunities. We were so proud to have nine of our New England Chapter Members lead or participate in various panels and presentations and watch as Sarah Abrams and Aurora Cammarata were recognized as 'Luminaries' at the Global Awards Dinner. I left feeling invigorated and inspired after seeing peers and colleagues, and learning through the great breakout sessions. From October 28-30, 2023, more than 85 members from The New England Chapter of CoreNet Global joined the almost 2,000 total attendees from CoreNet Global Chapters across the globe in Denver to engage in insightful conversations about the Power of Perspective.

While uncertainty can be seen as a threat or risk, embracing the discomfort that uncertainty brings is the new norm, and as leaders, we are expected to lean into it. “Zooming out” can equip corporate real estate professionals with the perspective, knowledge, and skills needed to emerge as thoughtful leaders who may not have a single answer but know how to ask the right questions.

TOPIC - ZOOMING OUT: THE POWER OF PERSPECTIVE

The power of connection community, the suspension of our own beliefs, taking time to listen and hear others from their perspective, finding purpose in being together were all common themes throughout the conference.

Opening General Session Speakers Peter Sheahan and Jessica Pettitt kicked off the summit by encouraging us to Zoom Out and look more broadly at our current environment to gain perspective; doing so will allow us to: • D istance yourself from the noise and look for the signals in the environment • S etting aside our assumptions opens us up for diversity and inclusion

• Embrace transformation and turn disruption into opportunity and change into advantage. We need to accept that choices must be made even when we don’t know for sure what the outcome will be.

• Using existing experiences to set benchmarks limits us from creativity and innovation. There is a fine line between experience and baggage. So, let go of everything you think you know about value creation. The more distance and questioning of your own assumptions you can create, the more valuable the outcome can be.

• A ccepting that our (and the CRE) environment has changed forever will unleash agility and the potential to open you up for what’s possible.

Shifting our orientation from inputs to outcomes that generate value is key.

• Orient your world around the outcome you desire; there is no recovering the old norm. Avoid circular conversations and realize we are creating something new with return to work. We need to move at the speed of acceptance.

• If the rate of change outside in the world exceeds the rate of change inside our work environments are the current rules of engagement, experience & workplace design still relevant?

• There is a shift to treating employees as customers.

The power has shifted from the organization to the individual, thereby changing forever the social contract between the two. Our job is to serve that new social contract. We need to find the value in changing paradigms and beliefs of the people we serve.

THEMES THROUGHOUT THE SUMMIT AND SEMINARS Magnet not Mandates – The Return to Office conversation is shifting and incorporating more discussions on creating workspaces that engage with

the changing needs and desires of today’s workforce; taking care to create purposeful spaces that allow for flexibility and agility while incorporating amenities and a variety of spaces to meet a diverse range of needs. Mandating employees to return without investing in improving the space and experience will fail. We must create a purpose for people to be in the office above and beyond meetings and mandates.

Data – Are we using data correctly? Employees don’t always know the difference between what they want and what they need – a survey may show that employees want certain spaces, but post-execution usage data can show that those spaces are underutilized. There oftentimes is no fixed solution to a variable problem, so we need to include flexibility and innovation to solutioning. AI was also brought up in a number of sessions as a possible tool for more accurate, real time data analysis and establishing a daily dialogue with employees.

Neurodivergent & Inclusive Workspaces – Several seminars touched on the need for more intentional and innovative design to meet the needs of today’s workforce; ensuring that the workplace provides a diverse set of space options.

ESG – Zooming out includes looking at what it means to provide a workplace that is focused on environmental and social governance. Understanding ESG and how it can be incorporated into your workplace was the focus of several seminar sessions, bringing together many thought leaders, CRE professionals and service providers to reimagine our work environment.

Connection & Community – Throughout the Summit many of the seminars touched on the need for more personal connection with our community and peers.

There is a strong need to change the narrative around mandates and shift the conversations back to the value of working together and its impact on making personal connections. Empathy, understanding, a sense of community, and innovation grow exponentially when we are working alongside and in person with our peers.

UNIVERSITY RELATIONS COMMITTEE

The University Relations Committee has had a busy fall. By the end of the November, the committee will have visited the campuses of Boston College, Babson University, Boston University, Wentworth Institute of Technology and Suffolk University to introduce students to the corporate real estate profession and CoreNet. Quite a few of the students have signed up to become CoreNet members! In addition to these campus visits the committee sponsored two students to attend the CoreNet Global North American Summit in Denver - San San Pham from Babson University and Evan Siegel from the University of Vermont.

chapter members, "adopted" the four students from Wentworth Institute of Technology who attended the Summit as one of three finalist teams for the Academic Challenge. The team's faculty advisor was CoreNet New England member George Conti, who not only serves as Vice President, Portfolio Strategy at Iron Mountain but is also an Adjunct Professor in the real estate department at Wentworth, where he recently won Adjunct Faculty member of the year! Aira Menfred, Adyn Roselli, George Nikolas and Trey Gring did a fantastic job in the finalist presentations which were judged by three industry professionals. In a fantastic and fun ending, Wentworth was announced as the winner Several members of the University Relations Committee during the Awards Dinner on Monday night, beating who attended the Summit, along with many other out Georgia State and Florida International University.

YOUNG LEADERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Young Leaders Professional Development 2023 Program cohort held their final presentation "From Zero to One: Understanding and Embracing AI in Corporate Real Estate" on Wednesday November 8 at the headquarters of WHOOP in Kenmore Square. Panelists were Nadine Ezzie, Founder and President of Ezzie & Co., and James Scott, Research Scientist and Lecturer at MIT’s Center for Real Estate. Jennie Kang, a member of the 2023 Cohort of the Young Leaders Professional Development Program, served as moderator. The panelists were Founder + President of Ezzie & Co. Nadine Ezzie and Research Scientist + Lecturer at MIT's Center for Real Estate James Scott.
