Keeping Faith: Sisters of Story

7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 | Centrum, Knutson Campus Center

Keeping Faith was born of a desire to bridge the divide and demonstrate peace and commonalties in the face of the hateful, vitriolic language and behavior in the country. Kim Schultz, writer, actor, director and storyteller specializing in comedic and authentic storytelling, has won awards for her stories. Professional storyteller and teaching artist Susan Stone’s stories have appeared in many anthologies and her recordings have garnered awards. Rohina Malik is an award-winning Chicago playwright and screenwriter whose plays have won critical acclaim and been presented across the U.S. and internationally. Each storyteller tells three stories inspired by their personal faith journey accompanied by cultural musical storyteller, arts organizer and writer Lucia Thomas, on violin, oud, and banjo.

The GRAMMY® nominated vocal supergroup, säje (rhymes with “beige”), is the brainchild of vocalist/composers Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick, and Erin Bentlage. Born out of close friendship and incredibly deep admiration, these world-renowned artists, composers, and arrangers have come together to explore, create, and celebrate the music that moves them. As individuals, each artist crafted their own notable solo career, and now are delighted to bring their collective voices to this union. The ensemble was awarded the John Lennon Songwriting Contest Grand Prize Award for their second composition “Wisteria,” and its debut album will be released soon. The union of säje is rooted in the tradition of joy, curiosity, lush harmony, heart-felt expression, and profound sisterhood. The performance is in conjuction with the annual Concordia Jazz Festival.

Heartland Marimba celebrates and elevates the accessibility of the classical marimba art form. Its goal is accomplished through community outreach, educational experiences, generating new repertoire, and opportunities for professionals. The Heartland Marimba Quartet (HMQ) exemplifies Heartland Marimba’s mission to develop and disseminate the art form in both academic and community contexts. HMQ, established in 2016, has performed more than 140 concerts since its inception. Its four distinctly creative forces are Ujjal Bhattacharyya, Matthew Coley, Marco Schirripa, and Hannah Weaver. The group seeks to give a platform to the music of American composers in its programming and continues to expand its repertoire with works from composers worldwide. HMQ is participating in Concordia’s Percussion Day.

Tamir’s art focuses on traditions of objectmaking and how they morph as they travel with their bearers through time and space, echoing the complex stories of relocation and shuffled identities. Tamir immigrated to the U.S. from Israel in 2011 and currently serves as assistant professor in sculpture at the University of Minnesota. Her work has been exhibited at venues in the U.S. and Tel Aviv and she has been awarded residencies in New York and Minnesota, among others. She received the Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship award; the Artis Exhibition Grant from artiscontemoprary.org, New York, N.Y., and recently the 2021 McKnight Fellowship for Visual Artists.

Behl is an artist and educator based in Brookings, S.D. She holds an MFA and M.A. in printmaking from The University of Iowa, a BFA in two-dimensional and design studies from Bowling Green State University and is an associate professor in the School of Design at South Dakota State University. The installation, inspired by a workshop led by Rotem Tamir, transforms the gallery space into a workshop-like setting, in which handwoven woolen floor pillows lay scattered on woodworking tables as if their makers had just left the scene. The pillows are inspired by research Tamir did on her own Libyan-Jewish heritage and were created during group gatherings, in which members could share their knowledge, ideas, and tell stories while creating them.

Readings and Conversation

Annual Author-in-Residence

7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16

Set near the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota in the 1950s, the book includes universal themes of community, family, love and freedom. The novel is based on Erdrich’s grandfather who worked as a night watchman and carried the fight against Native dispossession from rural North Dakota all the way to Washington, D.C. It tells the littleknown story of the U.S. government’s efforts in the 1950s to “emancipate” the Turtle Mountain band and other tribes and end federal recognition of these tribes in order to force them off their ancestral land.
