HISTORY OF ACADEMIC REGALIA

The gowns, hoods, and caps worn by students and professors in today’s formal academic procession are relics of garments worn during the Middle Ages. At the early universities — Bologna, Paris, Oxford — scholars wore a variety of academic garments for very practical reasons. Over the centuries, however, academic regalia has evolved and is now worn more for tradition rather than function.

GOWNS In the early days of the universities, which frequently owed their beginnings to the cathedral schools, professors were often members of the clergy. The apparel used by the clergy was, in general character, no different from that worn by the laity. Everyone wore a warm cloak and a hood to protect the head in bad weather. There was, however, one exclusively clerical garment that would be worn on formal academic occasions. In 1222, the Archbishop of Canterbury ordered all English clerics to wear the cappa clausa, a voluminous floor-length gown. The result of this rule was the cappa clausa came to be regarded as the standard, formal academic dress.

At today’s American colleges and universities, both students and professors wear academic garments during formal academic processions. Each gown is distinctive of the degree earned by the individual. Traditionally, the gown for the bachelor’s degree is black and has pointed sleeves. The gown for the master’s degree is more full and has oblong sleeves that open at the wrist. The gown for the doctorate degree is even more full, has bell-shaped sleeves with three velvet bars or chevrons across the upper arm. The color of the velvet is black, royal blue, or a color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains.

HOODS In medieval Europe, the hood was nothing more than a useful head covering in cold weather. Hoods had their origin as a shoulder covering worn by mendicant friars in the Middle Ages. Similar to the medieval monastic habit, academic hoods were sewn or tied to the upper part of the gown, and brought over the head for a covering. On the European continent,

the academic hood was replaced in the 16th century by a scarf, variously called chausse, chaperon, and sendelbinde.

American colleges and universities have followed the English academic tradition. Hoods are worn by scholars who have completed either a master’s or a doctorate degree. Of all the components of the academic costume, the hood bears the heaviest symbolic burden. Because the gown and hood are no longer required to keep the wearer warm, their function is one of identification. The hood must make clear the level of the degree, the discipline in which it was given, and the institution that awarded it. It is on the hood alone that all three items are clearly shown. The level of the degree is shown by the size of the hood, the width of the velvet trimming, and, in the case of doctors, by the shape. A master’s hood is 3 and one-half feet long, while a doctor’s hood is 4 feet long. Both hoods are lined with the official colors of the college or university conferring the degree. The lining also incorporates the color associated with the academic discipline. The edging of the hood is velvet, with 3-inch-wide black velvet for the master’s degree and 5-inch-wide royal blue velvet for the doctorate.

CAPS AND TASSELS

The caps worn by professors and students evolved from the clerical pileus. The Roman Catholic Church, at the Synod of Bergamo (1311), adopted the round clerical cap, or pileus, and required all clergy to wear it. Gradually, other varieties of headdress developed in the academic community. In 1520, a square cap was worn at the University of Paris. It was known as the bonnet carré and is the predecessor of our own square cap or mortar board.

The four-sided black mortar board and tassel is typically worn by most American students and professors. The tassel is either black or of the color indicating the field of study. The caps worn by doctors vary from the foursided mortar board to the eight-sided tam. The tassels worn by doctors are usually black or gold.
