CUBE’S FIRST BIRTHDAY celebrations

e d i t o r @ c o r b y m a g a z i n e . c o m

08 www.corbymagazine.com

S

ince the Corby Cube opened over a year ago, on November 1st 2010 it has had a huge on everyday life here in Corby. It’s hard to go a few days without having to use one of the complex’s facilities, for one reason or another; making it Corby’s central hub. As well as housing the council services, the Cube has been used over the past 12-months for countless exhibitions, for art, music and theatre, bringing the people of Corby together into the £40m complex.

The Core also recently announced that Jimmy Carr is set to perform a warm-up act for his up-and-coming tour in February right here in Corby. Tickets to the show went on sale in November, and sold out to the public within hours. On November 5th The Core held an open day, to celebrate the fact that it had been open for an entire year. They showed a variety of things which happen at the complex every week. They were also praised for the volume of activities which they put on for young people.

The theatre is a truly fantastic space, completely flexible, moving from flat floor to conventional proscenium arch, it really does offer us the opportunity to deliver almost anything.

The resultant 7,700 sq m building features a mix of facilities including a 455-seat theatre with front of house foyers and bars, Corby Borough Council One-StopShop and civic offices and a Terraced Roof Garden with adjacent exhibition space or restaurant.

; As well as the main venue the Core’s facilities also include studio space, known as ‘The Lab’. This space can be used to practice performances, and is also host to shows throughout the year, where a studio space is more appropriate.

One of the Cube’s biggest success stories over the last year has been that of the Core and the Corby Cube theatre, which is operated by the Royal and Derngate in Northampton.

Despite the success of this area of the building, local people have expressed their disappointment in other areas, one of which being the Library.

Thanks to that partnership the success rate of the Core has been unheard of in other venues of similar size in the UK. Some of the largest comedy and musical acts have performed in the 455 seat venue, including Alan Carr and Lee Nelson.

When we asked the Corby Magazine readers back in November what they thought of the Cube in, lots of people complained about the design of the Library, being on the ground floor, in an area which people have to walk through, and how this makes it too noisy to throughout the day, rendering it useless to some.

>

www.corbymagazine.com 09

One reader, Heidi GaffneyEvans said: “Love the idea of having everything in one place, but after trying to do work in the library and giving up after 30 minutes as it was too noisy, I think it could do with some retrofitting to improve it.“

Pictured: The second floor Ch which has bee to countless meetings over t year. (Tim C

Another reader said: “I don’t like the layout of the library, it’s disjointed with some of the books on the slope up to the next level, having them at a low level and with blue lights around them makes it hard to see what is available and isn’t very user friendly” Despite the mixed views on the Library, the area seems to have gone down well in general, after some changes to the Head Space and Childrens sections last year. Another section of the £40m build which has been questioned by the Corby Magazine readers is the roof top garden. Many readers expressed disappointment in the entire 4th floor in general. Before the Cube opened the 4th floor was set to be home to the roof-top garden and a top restaurant . The people of Corby are yet to see either of these; making some question their value.

FACTS ABOUT THE

cube

10 www.corbymagazine.com

THE CUBE IS IN A GLASS OF ITS OWN One thing which makes the Corby Cube an icon throughout the County is it’s striking glass outer design. The Building’s outer is made up of 2050 sheets of glass. The windows are all different, on each side

of the building, to make the most of the natural sun light, glaze and shade. There are double sized windows on the front face of the Cube, and roof windows in the foyer, both making the most of natural lighting, reducing costs.

The roof-top garden was completed and ready for the launch of the Cube back in November 2010, however a lot of people told Corby Magazine that they know nothing about it, let alone have seen it.

So it’s fair to say that within the first 12 months the Cube has had a hard start, with a lot of teething problems, some of which still remain. Despite this some say that is stands for a lot more than just a council building.

to create a dynamic hub that would be frequented by residents of Corby at all times, day and night. The theatre has been a tremendous success and we are heartened by the positive feedback from

Hawkins/Brown won the competition for the civic centre back in 2004. The brief called for two buildings – a town hall and an arts complex – but the architect suggested combining all the proposed functions into a single structure.

CORE, THAT’S GOOD! The Core Theatre is home to a curved retractable seating system, which is said by the Architect to be the first of its kind in the UK. They also say it’s ‘Influenced by several traditional theatres such as London’s Royal Court and Old Vic’

In response to comments by Corby Magazine readers. Roger Hawkins, director Hawkins\Brown said: ““We designed the Corby Cube as a building in the round at the centre of the new town square with two entrances into the ground floor and access on both sides. We combined council services and public facilities into one

library services who have had a 3-fold increase in library membership since the opening. The Cube is not yet being utilised to its full potential in terms of occupancy and we welcome its expanded use next year with the arrival of the cafe on the ground floor.”

THE CUBE’S STRONG BACKBONE From the outside there’s no sign what so ever of any concrete, however the entire build

used over 15,500 tonnes of the stuff, some of which even controls the Cube’s climate and temperature.

Across from the roof-top garden was set to be a restaurant, which would serve as the primary attraction on the 4th floor, however this never materialised. Now the 4th floor is home to a roofgarden which can not be accessed by the public and an empty unit, without any floor.

ave you ever thought of running your own business, creating a piece of art, generally doing something extraordinary or different? As kids, we all did something special everyday: we were living in our special world, which we saw our own way. We believed in magic and life was generally lot’s of fun. As Picasso said: “Every child is an artist. The problem is staying an artist when you grow up” This problem can be easily solved, and you are able to have a life of love, fun and enjoyment. At first, start doing something or challenge yourself. May be, you really enjoyed painting or singing before? Try to do that, just to see whether you like it now or not. Remember, that if you never try, you will never know. When you find something challenging or interesting, start publishing your work: today, there are so many websites and social networks that you can use.

I interview those who love what they do: entrepreneurs, djs, musicians, bloggers and other exciting people. The main purpose is to inspire young and old worldwide and to show that it’s all possible: you just need to love what you do and do what you love, it’s that simple. I do not know how far I am going to go in this life, but I’m sure I will follow this small principle. V funny man and standup icon Stephen K Amos recently visited Corby’s Cube

theatre as the last date of his tour, which stretched the UK. We spoke to Stephen, and asked him about being here in Corby, his career and life so far, and what we can expect in the future. In 2007 Stephen performed on BBC TV show ‘Live at the Apollo” joking to the audience that “The ultimate goal is to have my own TV show, But, as we all know, the BBC have a diversity policy. Apparently I have to wait for Lenny Henry to die!” - In 2009 he had his own show, creatively called the Stephen K Amos show.

now has over 21,000 followers. He often tweets about his tours, appearances and his thoughts on the world around him. Amos also tweets before he goes on stage, telling his followers where he is about to perform. We asked Stephen what he does to get ready to go on stage. “To get ready I listen to the audience as they come in backstage” he explained, “I also play loud music to pump up the adrenaline”. Stephen was on Corby’s very own stage on the 26th November when he played a packed Core at the Corby Cube, to conclude his two month, 15 part live tour, which started back in October in Kings Lynn.

Stephen K Amos plays numerous comical characters including “Frank”, the fashion conscious security guard at the BBC reception, and “Paul Hammer”, a master stuntman so versatile he can play anyone of any size, colour or gender.

In the show - which is a mix of standup and sketches Amos explores topics such as budget airlines. “In the event of an emergency oxygen makes will fall” Amos mocks “This is charged at just £1 per minute”.

With the hope of a heart warming answer we asked Stephen why Corby was chosen as the final stopping point on his tour. - OK, it wasn’t that heart warming!

Beyond the show Amos has ambitions of getting up in the air for real: “I wanted to be a pilot when I was 10” Stephen told us “I still have ambitions one day to take up flying lessons.”

“That’s just how it mapped out as we extended the tour to take in some more venues. It has been a long tour and I am just thankful that people want to come out and see me live.” He said, before crushing our hopes “It’s nothing personal, Corby!”

Despite not quite reaching that dream yet, his career has well and truely taken off over the past few years, and has been documented on his popular Twitter page, which

We asked Stephen what kind of comedy people could have expected when they went to see the show, and what his style of comedy was... “Semi biographical, observational...

story telling” he said “It’s Funny, in fact” Amos often jokes about his past. He grew up in London, to Nigerian parents who moved to the capital in the 60s. He was one of eight children, and a twin to his sister. When he featured on Live at the Apollo in 2007 he joked about his up bringing as a twin.

“One question I am always asked is do we feel pain at the same time? So I walked up to my sister and punched her in the face. I had a pain in my jaw too... from laughing so hard!” As well as appearing on Live at the Apollo several times, Amos has made many other TV appearances, including hosting a show named ‘Penis Envy’ and taking part in Children in Need.

concluded it with the following: “Sketches include the new BBC Show Search for Othello, in which judges ask the only white contestant how much chance he really stands, plus updates from the Nigerian News, in Sokoto, providing less than gripping headlines, such as the loss of a woman’s sandal. “Celebrity guests include Robbie Williams, Warwick Davis, David Walliams and Matt Lucas.”... “The show takes a while to bed in properly: combining a number of different formats kind-of jars at first. But, give it time, and it should please!” “The idea of Amos greeting the studio audience in disguise as a camp nononsense security guard is certainly a fun one.” Amos is the first of many large comedy acts who have been lined up to play at the Corby Cube’s Core over the next few months.

A highlight of your career? We asked. “Nothing beats doing a live show. There is no pause, rewind or start again button.” Amos then added “I have been fortunate to travel extensively in this job and do different things.” We also asked Stephen if during his endless TV appearances has he ever told a joke which did not go right.

He told us: “When I look back to the early days there were quite a few jokes that were way off the mark, however it’s all a learning curve as we try to find our own voice.” “Thankfully I am quite settled with who I am now.” Before we wrapped up with Stephen K Amos we wanted a sneak peak at what’s to come in his life after the tour.

Amos said that he is in talking about starting a brand new sit-com in the near future. Stephen also let us in on the fact that he is soon to start a radio series, and will be touring the United States and Australia. The Stephen K Amos Show is now available on DVD. The British Comedy Guide

Also, star of the critically acclaimed BBC4 documentaries Rich Hall’s The Dirty South and How The West Was Lost, Edinburgh Fringe favourite and Perrier Award winner Rich Hall is back on the road. C

orby Gems Girls FC was formed at the end of May 2011 and within 3 months it already has over forty girls registered with the MDH Mid-Shires Girls League, with two teams at U13 and an U16’s. The idea was born out of frustration from girls who wanted to play football the way they wanted at a club with the right attitude towards girl’s football. A club with players, coaching staff and parents all working together to create a positive blend of football and social belonging So a group of us decided it was time Corby had a girl’s only club, where we could concentrate on what the girls wanted out of playing football. As anyone who is

22

involved in female football will know girls are just as competitive as boys but enjoy the social aspect just as much as the sport itself and that’s what we aim to provide at Corby Gems. We train at the same time so it gives the different age groups the chance to get to know each other and interact through football; this in turn improves their social skills as individuals and as team members.

Looking at the bigger picture we also know that there is a big drop off when girls reach 16 and leave school so we have put a development plan in place to address this, by getting this age group into coaching and refereeing with our ‘Little Gems’, which is our starter group, for girls age 6-10 yrs old. For information on training times call 07887707319, or check out our Facebook page. If there was one way to sum up what Corby Gems is about

WILLOW PLACE sold

W

illow Place and Corby town centre has been sold

by real estate firm Land Securities PLC, to property company Helical Bar. In a sale which was initially called ‘speculation’ by Land Securities, the 750,000sqft site was sold for £70m, back in Novemver. The sale came a year after Land Securities dropped plans for the second phase of their development of Corby’s town Centre, which was set to be named ‘Evolution Corby’. Helical Bar, who now own Willow Place have spoke of their own plans for the future

development of the town centre; revealing that they wish to build two new department stores on the site of the old bus station in the town. Richard Akers, Managing Director for Retail at Land Securities, said: “Since we acquired Corby town centre six years ago, we’ve expanded it and strengthened the town’s position. The centre and asset teams have done a tremendous job in elevating the offer and shopping experience. Now, the time is right for us to sell it, recycle the capital and reinvest the funds in new opportunities.” Duncan Walker, Investment Director at Helical Bar, commented: “Corby is a strong town with a fast

growing population and its retail offer dominates the catchment area. The assets we have acquired generate a strong cashflow and offer the potential to enhance value through an active programme of asset management. He added “This significant acquisition brings the total of assets bought by Helical during 2011 to over £185 million and is in line with our stated focus of purchasing assets that, through the application of a range of initiatives, present clear opportunities to grow income and thereby drive increases in capital value over time.” There has been no time scale revealed by the company as

to when their plans will become actions, and construction will begin. The area sold includes Willow Place, Corporation Street and the Oasis Retail Park, three areas which have seen a mass of growth and improvement since Land Securities took over the 750,000sq site in 2005 from Tops Estates. We want to know what you think of the sale of Corby Town Centre and Willow Place: You can email your thoughts to editor@corbymagazine.com or connect with us via Facebook, Twitter or online on our new-look website www.corbymagazine.com

Corby is a new town! I’m not being harsh, but it benefited from the New Towns Act of 1946 where certain town were taken out of local authority control and placed under the Development Corporation, for Corby this happened on April 1st 1950, no fools there then!

One pub in Cottingham as a beam in the roof that has been carbon dated to the 12th century! So that pub, well barn as it was there when the foundations went down for Rockingham Castle was 1st picked as a strategic point on the steepest hill in Northamptonshire.

You may think that there isn’t much history in and about the town before Corby started to swell in the 1930’s and the “invasion” of workers from Scotland and Ireland, laid the foundations as to what Corby was to become, at one point, the largest village in the UK. Beyond all that, which is well documented, with the Steel works opening and closing, the enterprise zone introduction and the arrival of warehouses and distribution businesses, any history before all that happened, is a little harder to come by.

Now that’s nearly all in the north of the town but to the south west you have a building in Ruston, a folly erected by Sir Thomas Tresham between 1593 and 1597 which has tremendous links with the gunpowder plot, an even Corby Borough Council still celebrates for free each year. And an excellent job too!

If you look at the older estates in the borough, some do hark back to an age when all this was fields, lets look at the Beanfield. That was what it actually was! estate was built on what was once a field of beans. One of major arterial roads that feeds the area, Beanfield Avenue, is connected to Wescott Way, a once Roman road that connects to the Fosse Way and the avenue leads to Green Hill Rise, would you believe it but was merely a grassy hillock, which in turn merges with Farmstead Road, which was just that, the road to the farm that own the field of beans. Amazing! Lodge park was the area names so as it was closest to Rockingham Castle and its estate, Willowbrook Road was given that moniker as it was just that, whilst Welland Vale Road took you to that destination, of the view of the Welland Vale if you chose to go there. The street names that followed as the town grew are all grouped. We have streets named after Poets, Artists, the Royals in and around the town centre and famous industrialists off and around Stephenson Way and James Watt Road. Even up the lakes you have collections of birds, and flowers, all to make trips home in the wee hours easier for taxi driver I guess! The Kingswood was not so much the con created area that has just been redeveloped, but the Local Nature Reserve was actually a wood owned by the King, and if anybody knows which King I’d be pleased to know. Beyond the borders of the town some trips home in the wee hours easier for taxi driver I guess! The Kingswood was not so much the concreted area that has just been redeveloped, but the Local Nature Reserve was actually a wood owned by the King, and if anybody knows which King I’d be pleased to know. Beyond the borders of the town some of the villages have longevity.

Out toward the east, Weldon has one of the most unique churches in the country as it has a lighthouse on top of the building, a throwback to when the village was surrounded by the Rockingham Forest, so the light used to draw the community to St Mary in Weldon In the Woods, to give it its full name. It’s all history and there is much more out there if you know where to look, churches are good and some documents are held in Northampton along with a raft of books detailing historic walks, ghost tours and a wealth of picture books going back to the 1900’s. Closer to home, you can always pop into the heritage centre in the Old Village where you can learn of Corby’s link with the Vikings, well the Danes! So just because Corby only grew up in the 1950’s don’t let people tell you that there is no history in this New Town.

Cllr Chadbury wishes everyone in Corby and Great Oakley a Merry Christmas and prosperous new year

CINEMA AT THE core

T

his December Corby got an early christmas present in the form on a new cinema at the Core at The Corby Cube. Opened on the 20th December The Cinema at the Core takes advantage of the space which the venue already has, whilst bringing in new cinema projection equitment.

The Core held a trail screening of The Guard back in November, and invited Corby to come out, enjoy a film and even walk the red carpet.

The trail screening was of Irish comedy The Guard; the story of an unorthodox Irish policeman with a confrontational personality who is teamed up with an uptight FBI agent to investigate an international drug-smuggling ring. Directed by John Michael McDonagh, the film stars Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle. Starting on the 20th December the Core will be showing top films; the likes of which being shown at Kettering’s Odeon. One of the first films which is going to be shown is ‘Arthur Christmas’ - a new animation release which explores ‘how

Santa really delivers all of those presents’ before Christmas. Another film which will be shown as of December 20th at The Core is the blockbuster comedy Johnny English: Reborn. Rowan Atkinson returns to the role of the improbable secret agent who doesn’t know fear or danger in the comedy spy-thriller Johnny English Reborn. In his latest adventure, the most unlikely intelligence officer in Her Majesty’s Secret Service must stop a group of international assassins before they eliminate a world leader and cause global chaos.

“We’re really excited about starting our regular film showings in December,” said The Core Creative Director Chris Sudworth. “Our state of the art equipment has just been installed and everything is running smoothly.” Films are set to be shown regularly, fitting around the existing theatre program which the Core has in place. Charlie Lang of Corby said “I think it’s great that Corby finally has a big screen of its own.” “For too long now people and money has been drawn away from Corby into Kettering, as people did not have anywhere to watch a film”

Its brill, great sound and much more comfortable than the Odeon it Kettering. Looking forward to seeing more films there.

Another Corby Magazine reader said “Its brill, great sound and much more comfortable than the Odeon it Kettering. Looking forward to seeing more films there. “Its hardly “make do”. And it will be intersting to have a venue that can put on a wider selection of movies than just a big chain that is tied to a list of releases.

For certain screenings a special family ticket for four people will be available at £20. For more information on the cinema screenings at The Core at the Corby Cube, or any other show please visit their website www. thecorecorby.co.uk or refer to the booklet inside your copy of Corby Magazine.
