Magazine that it was a brilliant, free way of pulling the community of Corby together, whilst making our mark in local history.

A scheme has been launched in Corby to encourage you to grab your camera and get snapping your town. The website Photo Corby .com is to launch on January 1st 2011 and challenges everyone in Corby to put together 10,000 photos of the town that we all know and love, to be documented forever in history as Corby in 2011. The aim of the website is to show the story of Corby’s day-to-day life in one, normal year. It will then be online forever for generations to come. The scheme also encourages the people of Corby to join in and do something active, taking photographs of event, locations, people and anything else that you see as Corby through your eyes.

“I think that this will really take off during the middle of 2011 when we have such events as the Corby Carnival and the highland gathering. “We are not asking the people of Corby to do anything out of the ordinary, just allowing us to document the photos that they have taken online, for the whole world to see what a good place Corby has become. I think that this is a good way of shifting the negative stereotype that Corby may have in other towns, and will really put Corby on the map as a good place to visit, live and work” The site will be taking photos from January 1st via email, if selected they will then be put online with the photographer credited below. If you wish to submit any photography, RU ZLVK WR ÀQG RXW PRUH SOHDVH HPDLO photos@photocorby.com

Photos will then be displayed on the website, once deemed appropiate, where you’ll be able to vote for the one you think is the best. Creator of the site, Sean Spooner, told Corby

So, this Christmas malarkey, what’s it all about? Ok, for some it’s an important religious festival and the celebration of birth whist for others they focus on the family gathering or time to spend with friends, but however you take it, the 25th of December can be one of the most stressful days of the year. Dragons Den star, and business lady, Kirsty Henshaw, the creator of Worthenshaw’s Freedom took some time out to talk to Corby Magazine in an interview about her claim to fame and her business. The business lady and young mother from Preston came in to the spot light in early 2010 after winning both the hearts and business minds of dragons Peter Jones and Duncan Bannatyne. Kirsty’s product, then called CocaNuka, is a ‘Free From’ Ice cream alterQDWLYH ZKLFK VKH ¿UVW FUHDWHG IRU KHU \RXQJ son, Jake. Jake, who has a nut allergy and is dairy intolerant still is the inspiration behind the brand which is now in supermarket freezers, including right here in Corby’s Asda. My mum and dad never had any money and I didn’t want to be the same.’ µ, KDG P\ ¿UVW SURSHU EXVLQHVV DW Having a baby at a young age just made me more determined to build a good future for him and us.’ Kirsty’s product hit the shelves earlier this year, however it had the help of the two dragons, we asked Kirsty what it is like to work with the dragons, Kirsty told us: ‘I’m unbelievably privileged and lucky, although to be fair to myself I have worked very hard and I think you make your own luck in life.’ Kirsty, who started at home back in Preston with a £30 ice cream maker is still young for someone who is on set to become a multimillionaire, so we asked Kirsty about her view on young business leaders, and entrepreneurs.

Kirsty said: ‘Age shouldn’t be an issue, although experience does count for a lot so I think it’s essential young people gain life experience and skills before entering into a huge commitment like running a company.’ Freedom is now in most leading supermarkets, including Asda, Sainsburys, Tesco, Morrisions and Waitrose which is one of the biggest challenges for any new business, yet one that Kirsty and her team have made it look easy. With the products in all of the supermarkets over the country, we asked Kirsty what it’s like to be doing your shopping, then all of a sudden see your own product on the shelves, she said: ‘It’s Very strange but I’m used to it now, I just go in, re-arrange them a little bit and walk away. I don’t like people to know it’s me though so I usually have a hoodie on and sunglasses as I seem to be quite well known in Preston and I get a bit embarrassed and shy sometimes.’ www.corbymagazine.com - Page 15

Being someone who has no idea what so ever about fashion, you can imagine how long it took me to research all of the winter fashion trends. However, I have learned a considerable amount in doing this. Now call me a philistine, but I thought that when you go out in the winter‌ You just stick on a coat. Can you see where I’m going with this? This, as you may be able to QRWLFH GLG QRW UHDOO\ EHQHÂżW P\ UHVHDUFK or attitude about this piece. Anyway enough about me, let’s talk clothes! Whilst looking on websites from across the world, one thing was clear – there’s a focus on womens winter wear (rather than PHQÂśV EXW WKLV GLG QRW VWRS WKH ÂżUVW WUHQG I found. Vogue Magazine called it ‘Mannish Shoes.’ Yes that’s right ladies, this seasons ‘must have’ is a pair of blokes loafers! I was informed by one source that they ‘contrast the masculinity of the look with pretty Ă€RUDO GUHVVHVÂś DQG WKDW WKH\ DOVR ORRN JRRG with crisp white trousers! Soon after I came to realise that I’m not going to see many ladies Christmas shopping in their hubby’s shoes in Corby this year, and that I needed to look for something a bit more main stream. What I then discovered was a bit more logical in my eyes. Many places were saying that ‘brown is the new black’ this year, which then became apparent, as almost every item of clothing I saw was brown! This took me a step closer to my conclu-

I then found something which I knew I was going to come across. Something which could be seen as controversial – animal fur coats and boots. Now, I’m not going to go into much details with these, we’ve all seen them‌ You know, the things the evil lady in 101 dalmatians wears. (just me?) After looking some more, I found an alternative to the real fur; fake fur! These coats look the same but were made from other materials, which will please some people out there. The fake fur coats we’re also carrying a smaller price tag (that’s got to be an upside!) I was almost there, the perfect winter RXWÂżW , ZDV MXVW PLVVLQJ VRPHWKLQJ WR cover the legs. From my research, I discovered that ‘skinny jeans‘ are good for winter. Yes this LV DOO TXLWH VFLHQWLÂżF LQ IDFW RQH ZHEVLWH claims that they trap heat in by being so close to your skin. I was there, my research was over and I just had to conclude. 6R P\ ÂżQDO ZRUGV RI ZLVGRP DUH WKHVH – trends this winter are set around ‘cold colours;’ brown‘s, blue‘s, grey‘s and black‘s. There is a lot of room to customise, this season. Things like bracelets and charms are in. If you don’t opt for men’s shoes like the people on the cat walks, you can still be up to date. Brown, soft boots appear to be popular at this moment in time along with very colourful shoes. Now, honestly? Before you go out and buy yourself mens’ shoes and skinny jeans, do have a little peak your self online. As I said, I’m not Gok or GaGa – I’m Sean, and I only know as much as my computer will tell me. ...Remember. Keep Warm! www.corbymagazine.com - Page 21

The Corby Cube truly is open to people of all ages, that is the message that Northant’s County Council’s Library service are promoting, after the launch of their head space service, open to young people. The group, which is open to young people from the ages of 13 to 25 has been set up in its own area in the Cube, to encourage young people to read more books. Located in it’s own section of the library, and with such incentives as couches, televisions and workshops, Head Space is a way of reaching out to the young generations of Corby and encouraging them to make the most of their local services. Head of Corby Library, Shannon McHarg told Corby Magazine ‘Head Space is a way of bringing young people together in a safe environment, to have some fun, let their hair down and read some great books, whilst meeting new people of their age.’ ‘The service has now moved from the old Corby Library, to it’s own section in the cube, so now it’s really shaping itself around the young people of Corby, and KHOSLQJ WKHP ¿QG WKH NLQG RI ERRNV WKDW are right for them.’ A small group of people from the Head

Space group recently went to Leicester on a shopping trip, each to choose some books that they feel would appeal to people of their age group. This shows how Head Space really is about young people. Shannon said: ‘Each young person has a budget that they could use to buy some books from Waterstones. They has complete freedom, as they were aloud to choose which ever books they like.’ We spoke to one of the young people involved with Head Space, before the group made their move into the cube. He said: ‘I come to Head Space every time that the group meet, to catch up with people and feed back on the books that I am currently reading.’ ‘I am looking forward to the move in to the cube as I think that it will really give us a home away from home. Some where that young people can go to, to socialise, and a quiet spot to get away from everything and read.’ Now the project has moved to the Cube, anyone between the ages of 13 and 25 can pop in and get involved. The group meet frequently and the area is open most days, and school holidays. To ¿QG RXW PRUH DERXW KHDG VSDFH SOHDVH FDOO 01536 464000 and ask for the Library or Head Space.

By Sean Spooner sean@biggishmedia.com Corby’s local dance icon and newly founded business man Rob Ross spoke to Corby Magazine about his climb to here he is today, his television appearances and where his love for dance comes from. Rob, who lives in Corby is known around the town as a Dance icon, running groups with young people to help them with their dance skills whilst appearing at all sorts of community events, including this year’s Carnival where Rob and a group of young people who he choreographed performed in front of thousands. Rob also appeared in BBC Three’s programme ‘Move it like Michael Jackson’. Rob told us ‘One of the highlights of my career so far has been appearing on Television coming second under me starting my own dance class with my business partner Emmanuel.’

Rob’s group is one of the biggest in the town however a few years ago, when Rob was learning to dance there were not as many facilities encouraging young people to get involved. We questioned Rob on what inspired him to get into Dance. ‘I really got in to dancing after watching the legend him self, Michael Jackson however there were other influences like films including ‘You Got Served.’ I was also inspired watching the R&B singer Usher. Finding his spot in the performance world is one of the hardest part for any up and coming talent, however the people of Corby have got behind Rob and helped make his dreams a reality as Rob explained ‘The great people of Corby have most certainly been behind me every step of the say, helping and supporting me in everything which I do.’ Rob now runs a business with fellow Street Dance, Emmanuel - teaching the young generations of Corby’s youth just some of the many moves which they perform. When asked if he has any tips for the young people of Corby, Rob’s words were inspiring, yet profoundly simple. They were ‘Just be yourself, never be afraid to try new things. Be positive and try to think beyond the negative and then the sky really is the limit .

Senior Care

CARE IS CHANGING

O

ver the past 5 years there have been significant changes to how care is being delivered across the country. There are 2 main drivers for this development, the rapidly ageing population with people generally having fewer children and elderly people living longer, and recognition that the traditional method of providing care is failing to meet client needs. Over the next 25 years the number of children is forecast to increase by11%, working age adults by 15%, and older people by 32%. The number of people aged 75+ is forecast to increase by 76% in this timescale.

The market for non-medical care for older people is growing exponentially and there are opportunities for firms such as Home Instead to make a real difference in the quality of care at home that they deliver to allow elderly people to live independently and with dignity. There needs to be an emphasis on providing consistent, high quality services, compliant with Care Quality Commission regulations using highly effective recruitment and retention tools. This relies upon a referral based relationship utilising a diverse range of contacts to mitigate risk and maximise penetration into the community. Thousands Per Cent Thousands Per Cent

People have such busy lives nowadays that caring for a loved one on a full time basis is very difficult, added to the fact that many families no longer live close together. Children remain as committed as they ever were to looking after their elderly parents, but they either don’t live close enough to be able to carry out this desire on a regular basis, or they simply have such busy working and social lives to physically be unable to carry out the tasks with the right amount of time and empathy to do the job properly It has also been recognised that there have been shortcomings in care delivery, specifying tasks rather than outcomes, not having the time or continuity to develop relationships between individuals and care workers, and caring being rushed and only visiting for short 15 minute periods. Changes are being launched through the umbrella of Personalisation which has been confirmed in the document entitled ‘Putting People First: A shared vision and transformation of Adult Social Care’. This is an agreement between the Government, other leading political parties, Local Government, the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, the NHS, the Commission for Social Care Inspection and other partners published in December 2007. Examples of Personalisation include care being focused on the individual rather than the task, an increasing choice of providers, the expansion of direct payments, continuing healthcare provision, and the introduction of individual budgets. Added to this is the likely impact of public expenditure cuts to be announced in October 2010. It is most likely that hospital beds will become more difficult to obtain, more expectation will be placed on people to commission and pay for their own care packages, and people will be more determined to live at home for as long as possible. * This is an advertisment

Signing off... We’ve come to the end of another issue of Corby Magazine, and what an edition it has been! I hope that you have enjoyed reading this issue as much as our hard working team have enjoyed putting it together. Believe me when I say, this is only the beginning. We plan to stick around in the amazing town that is Corby and continue this magazine for many years to come. Recently we have had a lot of PR and one of the questions which we were asked is ‘what is your ambition for Corby Magazine?’ Our goal is simple, to have this free magazine in every house, business and other establishment with-in the next few year. Currently we distribute 2,00 copies of Corby Magazine which go to Doctors, Dentist, Hair Dressers and other areas where people wait. This has gained us an estimated readership of 5,000 over the three months which we are in circulation. Anyway, I do hope that you have enjoyed Issue three of Corby Magazine, Issue four is out on March 1st. If you have any suggestions email them to support@biggishmedia.com. Regards,
