Although we must all remain vigilant to keep each other safe, it’s wonderful to see SFU come back to life. We are a big, diverse, and dynamic community, buzzing with creativity and ideas. And over the last 18 months, under the most challenging of circumstances, you have helped us keep that spirit alive. We are immensely grateful to you, your loved ones and all those who helped you along the way. Your resolve will not soon be forgotten.

It takes an enormous amount of hard work and determination to earn a university degree. Every graduating class deserves recognition for its accomplishment. But the perseverance you showed in completing your degree at one of the most challenging times in recent history adds special meaning and significance to this ceremony. I am so proud of you. I know it wasn’t easy. But you did it.

If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that our individual destinies are linked and that we share a common future. It is an enduring truth that will make a better world. HISTORY The university is named after Simon Fraser, loyalist, fur trader and explorer, who in 1808 completed a great journey in the annals of Canadian history by descending the river which today bears his name. In January 1963, a report recommended the creation of a new university in the Lower Mainland — two months later the establishment of Simon Fraser University received formal assent in the British Columbia Legislature and Dr. Gordon M. Shrum was appointed the first chancellor. From a variety of sites, the chancellor recommended the top of Burnaby Mountain, with its magnificent views of Burrard Inlet, the Coast Mountains, the Fraser River and Vancouver harbour – the unceded, traditional and occupied lands of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam, and Kwikwetlem peoples. The Vancouver firm of Erickson/Massey won the design competition, but the four runner-up architects each designed at least one building within the overall plan. Construction began in the spring of 1964 and 18 months later on September 9, 1965, SFU opened to 2,500 charter students. Since then, the university expanded to downtown Vancouver and the Surrey Central district. The Vancouver campus has grown from a modest storefront offering night school classes in the early ’80s to the largest post-secondary institution downtown. SFU Vancouver’s nine sites offer degree and continuing studies opportunities for students and include several galleries, innovation centres, a student residence and the internationally renowned Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue. SFU’s Vancouver campus celebrated 30 years of learning, research and community engagement in 2019.

Since 2002, SFU’s Surrey campus has helped define and shape Surrey’s city centre. The campus offers a diverse number of undergraduate, graduate and continuing studies courses and is home to world-class, leading edge research in health, energy and creative technologies. The Surrey campus also supports a thriving entrepreneurial learning environment. The campus currently occupies a stunning facility designed by renowned architect Bing Thom. In the fall of 2019, SFU’s Surrey campus opened its newest 160,000 square foot building, the last project designed by the late Thom. The building houses SFU’s new School of Sustainable Energy Engineering featuring innovative labs and a 400-seat lecture theatre for both academic and community use. Simon Fraser University has been characterized by its adventurous spirit, openness, willingness to embrace bold initiatives and its commitment to reconciliation. SFU’s unique educational programs, inspired research and vibrant community relations set it apart from other universities — in B.C. and in Canada. FALL 2021 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS ▼

Ceremony E | Thursday, October 7, 10:00 a.m. Dr. John Blatherwick, Doctor of Science, honoris causa A trailblazing public health leader, Dr. John Blatherwick spent almost four decades keeping people healthy. A catalyst and an innovator, he led Vancouver’s response to the 2003 SARS outbreak and was the driving force behind a number of public health initiatives, fighting for safe drinking water, non-smoking bylaws and childhood vaccine programs. A believer in harm reduction, he also established the largest needle-exchange program and the first supervised injection site in North America. He retired as one of Canada’s longest-serving medical health officers. Blatherwick served in the Canadian Forces Reserves for 39 years. He has received the Order of Canada, the Order of B.C and the Order of St. John. He was named a Canadian Health Hero by the Pan American Health Association in 2002. Ceremony A | Tuesday, October 5, 10:00 a.m. Dr. Catherine Clement, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa A community history curator, exhibitor and volunteer, Dr. Catherine Clement has surfaced and shared lesserknown stories of Vancouver’s historic Chinatown. Among her many projects, Clement worked to uncover the hidden images of Yucho Chow, the city’s first and most prolific Chinese photographer. Her 10-year community collection project, which culminated with a month-long public exhibition and a 344-page book, helped reveal the lives of people from many marginalized communities during a tumultuous and transformative period in Vancouver’s history (1907-1949). A former communications executive, Clement served as volunteer curator for the Chinese Canadian Military Museum and designed a series of exhibitions about Chinese Canadian soldiers during the Second World War. She is currently working on a project that will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act.

Ceremony F | Thursday, October 7, 2:30 p.m. Dr. Margo Kane, Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa A visionary activist and storyteller, Dr. Margo Kane is a renowned interdisciplinary artist and a major advocate for advancing Indigenous performing arts in Canada. Kane, who created the Full Circle: First Nations Performance Company in 1992 to reach historically underserved rural communities, helped illuminate the extent of Indigenous omission in Canada’s arts landscape. In that regard, she has dedicated her life to training and mentoring Indigenous artists and creating showcases where emerging and professional artists can thrive and share their work and culture. Nowhere is that more evident than Kane’s work on SFU’s strategic community engagement initiatives, including the annual Talking Stick Festival and the Bah Humbug project, a holiday staple in the Lower Mainland for the past 10 years. In recognition of her efforts, she was recently appointed to the Order of Canada. Ceremony C | Wednesday, October 6, 10:00 a.m. Dr. Nurjehan Mawani, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa A champion of equity, justice, diversity, and international development, Dr. Nurjehan Mawani has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of immigrants and refugees in Canada and advance rights and educational opportunities for women and girls. As Chair of the Immigration and Refugee Board she issued groundbreaking guidelines for refugees and gender-related persecution and co-founded the International Association of Refugee Law Judges, bridging law and policy to support women refugee rights. More recently, Nurjehan served as Ambassador of the Aga Khan Development Network to the Krygyz Republic and Afghanistan. Partnering with multiple stakeholders, her work centred on inclusive and participatory development and its nexus with peace and stability. She also sits on SFU’s Faculty of Environment’s advisory committee, helping address the interwoven issues of gender, environment and sustainable development. Nurjehan is a recipient of the Order of Canada, the Public Service of Canada Outstanding Achievement Award and has been conferred two previous honorary degrees. 5

RECENT HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS ▼

Ceremony D | Wednesday, October 6, 2:30 p.m. Dr. John Borrows Doctor of Laws, honoris causa Dr. John Borrows is a leading authority on Indigenous, constitutional and environmental law whose scholarship is having a transformative impact on reconciliation efforts in Canada and around the world. Borrows, a member of the Chippewa of the Nawash First Nation in Ontario, holds the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Law at the University of Victoria (UVIC) Law School. Among his accomplishments, which include a dozen books on Indigenous law, treaties and land claims, Borrows co-founded the world’s first Indigenous law degree in 2018 at UVIC. He secured provincial funding to support the program and federal funding to establish a National Centre for Indigenous Law & Reconciliation. Borrows is a fellow with the Trudeau Foundation and with the Royal Society of Canada and is the recipient of several honorary degrees. The degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, was conferred on Dr. Borrows on Thursday, June 11, 2020 at the Virtual Convocation ceremony. Ceremony G | Friday, October 8, 10:00 a.m. Dr. Herb (Jay) James Doctor of Laws, honoris causa Dr. Herb M. James is an international foundation executive, philanthropist and an SFU charter student, who, for more than half a century, has helped improve the lives of thousands of deaf and hearing-impaired children around the world through his better hearing/better health programs. As president and founder of the International Sound Foundation (ISF), James works with volunteer physicians and nurses to offer free hearing screening and basic medical procedures, including ear surgeries, in 10 developing countries. Battling deafness as a teen, James received life-changing ear surgery in Sweden that, at the time, was unavailable elsewhere. After reading about a new audio test unit for pre-school children, James purchased one of the units and lent it free to the B.C. government. Eventually he bought dozens for developing countries through the ISF Better Hearing-Better Life program, which has helped thousands of children hear again. His foundation also collects and refurbishes operational hearing aids, which it distributes free to people in need.

The degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, was conferred on Dr. James on Monday, June 21, 2021 at the Virtual Convocation ceremony. Ceremony B | Tuesday, October 5, 2:30 p.m. The Honourable Dr. Wally Oppal Doctor of Laws, honoris causa A former judge and attorney general, The Honourable Dr. Wally Oppal has made significant contributions to B.C.’s justice system. He has spent most of his working life fighting for community safety and justice for society’s most vulnerable and has led high-profile public commissions into missing women and policing in B.C. In 1981, after a decade in criminal law, Oppal became the first judge of Indian heritage outside India. He left the B.C. Court of Appeal in 2005, and was elected to the Legislative Assembly of B.C., serving as the province’s Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Order of B.C. and recently served as Chancellor of Thompson Rivers University. Oppal also co-chaired the SFU India Advisory Council. The degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, was conferred on the Honourable Dr. Oppal on Monday, June 21, 2021 at the Virtual Convocation ceremony.

Graduand speakers were selected by the faculties and the registrar based on student achievement and extracurricular involvement. Ceremony A Mizuki Giffin, BA World Literature and English Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Mizuki Giffin is graduating with an Honours degree in World Literature and a minor in English. Her thesis examines representations of small animals in select Ainu Oral Stories. At SFU, Mizuki served as president of the World Languages and Literatures Student Union, producer of the World Literature Student Conference, and co-communications coordinator for The Lyre Magazine. She was also a FASS engagement programming assistant, and volunteered with the Student Learning Commons as a peer tutor. Mizuki received the Caledonia Award in World Literature, the Mike McIntosh Library Undergraduate Award, and the Robert C. Brown Award. She now works at the UBCO Library in her hometown of Kelowna, and plans to pursue a Masters in Library and Information Sciences. Ceremony B Yi Chen (Jennifer) Chou, BA Psychology Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Jennifer Chen is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Publishing. Since first year, she has been part of the FASS Mentorship Program where she was empowered to give back to her community. As an advocate for student well-being, Jennifer worked to improve accessibility and mental health supports at SFU. By taking on leadership positions within campus organizations like the Simon Fraser Student Society, SFU Disability and Neurodiversity Alliance, and SFU Knitting Club, Jennifer had the opportunity to create memorable experiences for others. She has also hosted skills-based workshops with Emerge SFU to help students learn design software. In the future, she hopes to inspire others to create more supportive and inclusive communities.

Ceremony C Hettipathirenne (Janmie) Gunawardena, BA Political Science Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Janmie Gunawardena is graduating with an Honours degree in Political Science and Communications; her research focussed on far-right political parties in Britain. As a two-time President’s Honour Roll and seventime Dean’s Honour Roll student, she is a proud member of the SFU community. She worked as a research assistant in the Department of Criminology and volunteered as a senior community leader with the Global Connections program. A recipient of the Gordon M. Shrum Major Entrance Scholarship, Janmie participated in SFU’s Co-op program, completing three work-terms with the Government of Canada. With her work experience and academic background in national security, Janmie hopes to pursue a career as a policy analyst and a Masters in International Relations. Ceremony D Mavis Lum, BBA Human Resources and Management Information Systems Beedie School of Business Mavis Lum is graduating from the Beedie School of Business with concentrations in Human Resources and Management Information Systems. With a passion for developing others, Mavis led several student initiatives in the SFU community. Most notably, Mavis was the internal chair of the JDC West competition, hosted at SFU in 2019 and attended by more than 1,200 participants. As well, Mavis mentored first year students, planned the Pathways Career Conference, and was a LAUNCH leader. She is extremely grateful for the mentors and staff at Beedie who guided her during her undergraduate career. Mavis now works on the Talent Management team at Teck Resources, where she supports world-class employee development programs and the company’s HR technology transformation.

Ceremony E Dr. Kevin Rey, PhD Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Faculty of Science Kevin Rey is graduating with a PhD in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry; his thesis focused on the interaction between bacteria naturally found in the gut, and how they modify the immune responses that lead to transplant rejection. Dr. Rey’s research was supported by awards from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, BC Transplant, and SFU. He has served his department’s Graduate Caucus in multiple positions, written for The Peak, assisted in six faculty hires, and mentored 15 undergraduate and graduate students. His PhD would not have been possible without the support of his mentors, colleagues, family, and friends. Dr. Rey plans to apply the foundational understanding of research he gained at SFU to a career in medicine. Ceremony F Mairin Shields-Brown, BEnv, Resource and Environmental Management Faculty of Environment Mairin Shields-Brown is graduating from the Faculty of Environment with a bachelor’s degree in resource and environmental management. A student athlete on SFU’s Track and Field and Cross-Country running teams, Mairin pursued both academic and athletic excellence throughout her undergraduate career. She was awarded All-American athletic honours at the 2020 NCAA Indoor National Championships, and was named to the Dean’s Academic Honour Roll for six consecutive semesters. She represented her team on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, helping to spearhead numerous community involvement initiatives for athletes and students. Mairin also volunteered as an Environmentor, virtually mentoring a new SFU student with academic and social support. Inspired by climate action and sustainable innovation, Mairin is looking ahead to future ventures in clean energy and natural resource management.

Ceremony G Lisette (Liz) Lockhart, MASc Engineering Science Faculty of Applied Sciences Lisette Lockhart’s research focused on medical image analysis, automating embryo assessment for IVF treatment. Her work led to three first-author technical papers, and she was delighted to present her work at a pre-COVID conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She was actively involved with student life through the Engineering Graduate Student Association and within the community organizing events through Google Developers Group and Women Techmakers. A highlight of her degree was mentoring high school girls in computer vision through AI4ALL’s Invent the Future program. Continuing to pursue her fascination with AI in healthcare, Lisette is now developing algorithms for cardiac CT and MR image analysis as a research software developer at Circle Cardiovascular Imaging. Ceremony H Charlene Williams, MEd, Education Faculty of Education (Indigenous) Charlene Williams is of Skwxwu7mesh, Nuu-chahnulth and Snuneymuxw descent. She was raised in—and currently lives and works within—her Skwxwu7mesh territory in the Squamish Valley. A Skwxwu7mesh culture and language worker with School District 48 for 16 years, Charlene is currently working at Aya7ayulh Chet, a Kindergarten to Grade 6 Indigenous program guided by the principle that all learning is grounded in understanding the connected relationship of language, land and culture. She is a facilitator of the Welh Tima Kexwusem Squamish Nation Dance Group that provides Skwxwu7mesh youth with the opportunity to learn and share their traditional songs and dances. Charlene is a lifelong learner of her Skwxwu7mesh language and culture.

SYMBOLS OF SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY The original Coat of Arms was granted to the university in 1965 by the Lord Lyon, King of Arms, in Edinburgh. The 1965 arms was registered in Canada in 2007. In 2007, the Canadian Heraldic Authority granted a modification of the Coat of Arms at the request of the university. The arms are based on the arms of Fraser of Lovat, from whom the university’s namesake was descended via the Frasers of Culbokie. The blue quarters with white “fraises” i.e., strawberry flowers (a pun on the name Fraser) are the basic Fraser arms, while the white quarters with red crowns are those of Lovat. There are three books at the top of the shield, representing education. The heraldic description of the arms is: “Quarterly; first and fourth Azure three fraises Argent; second and third Argent three antique crowns Gules, all within a bordure quarterly Argent and Gules, on a chief Gules three open books proper, bound and edged Or.” The university’s motto “Nous sommes prêts”, meaning “We are ready”, is a variation of the traditional motto of the Clan Fraser. The mace was commissioned by university architects Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey, and was presented to the university at the opening ceremonies on September 9, 1965. The mace is 61 inches long and weighs 23 pounds. Pieces of cut and polished jade, which were taken from the university’s jade boulder in the Academic Quadrangle reflecting pond, were set in silver by its designer, Haida artist Bill Reid. The mace is crowned by a silver stag’s head, derived from the coat of arms of Lord Lovat, head of the Clan Fraser. The Fraser tradition was to fasten sprigs of yew in their bonnets before entering battle, and the mace was carved from two hundred-year-old yew, gathered on Burnaby Mountain by a resident in the 1940s. Lord Lovat presented the university with a claymore, or great sword, on September 9, 1965. The claymore was first used by a Fraser at the Battle of Culloden Moor in 1746. It was also used by a Fraser at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. The claymore is approximately 36 inches long and weighs two pounds. The university’s flag is based on the coat of arms, and was first flown at the Convocation ceremonies in June 1981.

REGALIA The regalia worn today by our graduates has a colourful history. Regalia originated in the monasteries of the Middle Ages. At that time, university faculty were men of religion who wore the habit of their Order when teaching. Over time, their garments came to identify their university. In Europe, laymen did not commonly teach in universities until the 19th century. Only by 1858, for example, did British law no longer require university dons to be in holy orders. Nevertheless, professors continued to wear clerical garb, with modifications in cut and design. Regalia colours often matched those of the university patron, or of the city in which the university was located; Simon Fraser regalia combines the red and royal blue of the Clan Fraser. The degree hood was originally part of the monk’s habit — a carryall for food or other small items. Eventually, the hood became separate from the gown, variegated in colour, and emblematic of scholars and degrees from particular universities. Hoods in Canada and Europe are unique in design and colour to each degree and each university. The history of the mortarboard worn by our Bachelors and Masters begins with high church dignitaries in the 16th century. These officials wore hats consisting of little more than a cap with a raised, squared crown. By the 18th century, the crown had evolved into a cloth-covered board, and the wearers into the deans and rectors of universities. The 19th century saw the top knob replaced by a tassel and the cap become required student attire. Reminded of the square board masons used to hold mortar, students dubbed the headgear a “mortarboard” — college slang of the day.

THE PRESIDENTS’ AND CHANCELLORS’ REGALIA In early 2020, following on the Calls to Action presented in SFU’s Aboriginal Reconciliation Council report, SFU undertook to renew the President and Chancellor’s regalia with a design that would respectfully honour the first peoples and the traditional lands on which the SFU Burnaby Campus resides. The motifs that appear on the regalia were chosen and designed by Hereditary Chief Janice George (Chepximiya Siyam’) and Willard ’Buddy’ Joseph (Skwetsimeltxw) of the Squamish Nation. Local designer, Beverli Barnes designed the gowns. These motifs can also be seen on Newxniw’chet (The Teachings) Salish blankets that hang in SFU’s Saywell Hall Atrium. They represent the first peoples that lived on Burnaby Mountain and the food they harvested there. The motifs also represent leadership and nobility, adaptability, the past and the present. Arranged on the gowns in contemporary colours and fabric, the patterns evoke the style of a traditional Salish blanket. “The Salish blanket, worn as a ceremonial robe, is an object of extraordinary complexity. Said to exist in the supernatural realm, these robes are made manifest in the natural world through Ancestral guidance. Wearing a woven blanket during ritual is transformative, moving the individual from the mundane to a sacred space. They are protective garments that at times of great changes in a person’s life… offer emotional strength. The object, the maker, the wearer, and the community itself are bound and transformed through the creation and use of the Salish blanket”. ~ Salish Blankets - Robes of Protectio

Doctoral hats are patterned after the Florentine hats in the time of the Medici. Students purchased hats of the appropriate university colours when continuing with advanced studies after completing the bachelor degree.
