CHANCELLOR’S WELCOME

Welcome to SFU’s October 2022 Convocation Ceremony! It is wonderful to mark this important milestone with you.

knowledge has made me a better public servant, a better CEO and I hope a better member of the community.

Your graduating class is one of the most accomplished and resilient in SFU’s history. I don’t have to tell you about what your education means, or the power that it gives you to change the world.

As our country and world confront enormous challenges, from the climate crisis to the rise of authoritarianism, these values are more important than ever. I am so excited to see how your education animates your work and your life moving forward—and I know you will continue to make your SFU family proud.

But as much as you accomplished at SFU, I think you will find, as I did, that the full value and power of your education will only be fully realized with time. Over the years, my education has helped me see that we share a common destiny; that we achieve more by working together than we can alone. And that

Several decades ago, I went to university and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I was confident in the path I had chosen: just like my mom, I was going to be a nurse. I was so sure that would be my whole career. However, things didn’t turn out quite how I planned.

For each of you, convocation marks the end of one journey and the beginning of a much longer one. As you move forward, you might be offered opportunities that you weren’t expecting. But I have full confidence that the skills you’ve developed during your time at SFU have prepared you to step up to those challenges. And I don’t just mean technical skills!

HISTORY The university is named after Simon Fraser, loyalist, fur trader and explorer, who in 1808 completed a great journey in the annals of Canadian history by descending the river which today bears his name. In January 1963, a report recommended the creation of a new university in the Lower Mainland — two months later the establishment of Simon Fraser University received formal assent in the British Columbia Legislature and Dr. Gordon M. Shrum was appointed the first chancellor.

From a variety of sites, the chancellor recommended the top of Burnaby Mountain, with its magnificent views of Burrard Inlet, the Coast Mountains, the Fraser River and Vancouver harbour – the unceded, traditional and occupied lands of the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), kwikwəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) and xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) peoples.

The Vancouver firm of Erickson/Massey won the design competition, but the four runner-up architects each designed at least one building within the overall plan. Construction began in the spring of 1964 and 18 months later, on September 9, 1965, SFU opened to 2,500 charter students.

Since then, the university has expanded to downtown Vancouver and the Surrey Central district. The Vancouver campus has grown from a modest storefront offering night school classes in the early ’80s to the largest post-secondary institution downtown. SFU Vancouver’s nine sites offer degree and continuing studies opportunities for students and include several galleries, innovation centres, a student residence and the internationally renowned Morris J. Wosk

Centre for Dialogue. SFU’s Vancouver campus celebrated 30 years of learning, research and community engagement in 2019.

Since 2002, SFU’s Surrey campus has helped define and shape Surrey’s city centre. The campus offers a diverse number of undergraduate, graduate and continuing studies courses and is home to world-class, leading edge research in health, energy and creative technologies. The Surrey campus also supports a thriving entrepreneurial learning environment. The campus currently occupies a stunning facility designed by renowned architect Bing Thom. In the fall of 2019, SFU’s Surrey campus opened its newest 160,000 square foot building, the last project designed by the late Thom. The building houses SFU’s new School of Sustainable Energy Engineering, featuring innovative labs and a 400-seat lecture theatre for both academic and community use.

Dr. Afua Cooper Doctor of Letters, honoris causa Thursday, October 6, 2:30 p.m.

Ceremony B Afua Cooper is a multidisciplinary scholar, author and artist whose research on slavery, Black education, women studies and the African Diaspora has improved social justice and cultural awareness and brought international attention to issues of racism, inclusion and Black culture in Canada.

Cooper is one of the leading figures in African-Canadian studies and is principal investigator for A Black People’s History of Canada project at Dalhousie University, where she holds a Killam Research Chair. Her scholarship and her art, which includes numerous exhibits on Black history, slavery and freedom, bridges the gap between academia and the world at large. Cooper’s 13 books span genres from history to poetry to children’s literature. Her much lauded work, The Hanging of Angelique: The Untold Story of Slavery in Canada and the Burning of Old Montreal, broke new ground in the study of Canadian slavery.

Cooper has received the Portia White Prize, been named one of the most influential Canadians by Maclean’s and served as Halifax’s seventh Poet Laureate.

Dr. Anne Giardini Doctor of Laws, honoris causa Friday, October 7, 9:45 a.m.

Ceremony C SFU Chancellor emeritus Anne Giardini is a celebrated business leader, lawyer and writer. The SFU alumnus is acclaimed for her groundbreaking leadership in law and in the Canadian resource industry, contributions to numerous corporate boards and for championing the advancement of women, higher education and the arts. She has been named one of Canada’s 25 most influential lawyers and one of Canada’s most powerful women.

Constructive, principled and articulate, Giardini brings her trademark enthusiasm and expertise to numerous causes.

Serving on SFU’s Board of Governors for five years and as Chancellor from 2014 – 2021, she inspires the entire university community and is an exemplary role model for students.

Dr. Michelle Good Doctor of Letters, honoris causa Friday, October 7, 2:30 p.m.

Ceremony D Michelle Good is a Cree author, lawyer and advocate determined to ensure the hardships faced by residential school survivors and the impact of their struggle is not forgotten. She helps guide us toward reconciliation and decolonization. A member of the Red Pheasant Cree Nation, Good spent over two decades working for Indigenous organizations. At 43, she obtained a law degree to advocate on behalf of residential school survivors and at 58 received a Masters of Fine Arts degree. Good penned her debut novel, Five Little Indians, about the life-long impacts on survivors trying to find their way after residential school. The novel reveals the brutality of the Indian residential school system and its continuing intergenerational impact. Released to critical acclaim, Five Little Indians won the HarperCollins/UBC Best New Fiction Prize, the Governor General’s Literary Award, Amazon First Novel Award and the Kobo Emerging Writer Award. It was a finalist for the Writer’s Trust prize and longlisted for the Giller Prize.

Dr. Rupert Raj Doctor of Laws, honoris causa Thursday, October 6, 9:45 a.m.

Ceremony A A trailblazing trans activist, Rupert Raj has spent more than 50 years fighting for trans rights in Canada. Transitioning from female to male in Ottawa in 1971, Raj has helped thousands of transsexual, transgender, genderqueer, intersex and Two-Spirit people in North America and abroad through the peer-support groups he co-founded and his work as a gender consultant and psychotherapist. As a professional trainer, Raj delivered transpositive training workshops to healthcare professionals, educators, employers, lawyers and politicians. As an expert witness, he has testified on behalf of transgender human rights complainants. He has edited three transsexual newsletters, written several trans-focused papers for scholarly journals and has authored three books, including Trans Activism in Canada and his 2020 autobiography. In addition to numerous awards, Raj was inducted into The ArQuives in 2013 for his many years of service to the gender diverse community.

The multi-talented Giardini is also the author of two novels and a book of writing advice, a member of the Order of British Columbia and an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of her contributions to the forestry sector, higher education and literature.

GRADUAND SPEAKERS ▼

Graduand speakers were selected by the faculties and the registrar based on student achievement and extracurricular involvement.

Paige Rattenberry, BASc Engineering Science Faculty of Applied Sciences Ceremony A Paige Rattenberry earned Honours with Distinction in Computer Engineering at SFU. She completed two software development internships at Microsoft along with a product analyst co-op term at Samsung. A two-term machine learning/computer vision co-op at Stryker R&D inspired her thesis on interpretable AI in medical imaging. Passionate about applying software and electronics engineering skills to biomedical and neuroscience applications, Paige volunteered in two SFU labs in those specialties. Her capstone team's project won the 2022 International, Cultural and Academic Meeting of Engineering Students (ICAMES) competition for their contribution to developing a new technology that helps correct adolescent spinal curvature. She is honoured to begin her career as a Software Engineer at Microsoft’s headquarters in Seattle.

Jhanvi Chamathka Indatissa, BA Economics Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Ceremony B Jhanvi Chamathka Indatissa has a keen interest in finance and econometrics. While her degree is primarily mathfocussed, she enjoys working with people to create positive and inclusive spaces that encourage community development and social justice. Recently awarded SFU’s International Student Award for Intercultural Engagement, Jhanvi has deep experience working and volunteering with organizations that reflect her values, including the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and the Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group (SFPIRG). As she furthers her studies, Jhanvi hopes to pursue a career in her field and to serve the community.

Sarah Un-Jae Lee, BBA Human Resource Management Management Information Systems Beedie School of Business Ceremony C Sarah Un-Jae Lee focused on getting the most out of her undergrad at SFU by immersing herself in the school community in different ways. She was particularly involved with Beedie student organizations, such as the Business Administration Student Society, and was a part of the organizing committee and competing team for JDC West—Western Canada’s largest business competition. Sarah was also the President of University Christian Ministries, where she helped create a welcoming environment for students to explore their faith. She had the privilege of completing co-op terms at TELUS and Teck Resources, and participated in an international exchange semester in Prague. After graduation, Sarah is excited to continue working at Teck Resources as a Digital Recruitment Specialist.

Alexandra Derian, MA Archaeology Faculty of Environment Ceremony D While completing her undergraduate degree at SFU, Alexandra Derian served as a student ambassador within the archaeology department.

As a Masters student, she received a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship to support her research into subsistence practices in the Interior Plateau of British Columbia through zooarchaeology. She has also worked as a consulting zooarchaeologist, and serves as a reviewer for the Canadian Journal of Undergraduate Research. Alexandra is currently pursuing a PhD at Trent University in Ontario, using stable isotope analysis to study the diets of Arctic foxes recovered from archaeological sites.

OUR TRADITION ▼

SYMBOLS OF SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY The original Coat of Arms was granted to the university in 1965 by the Lord Lyon, King of Arms, in Edinburgh. The 1965 arms was registered in Canada in 2007.

In 2007, the Canadian Heraldic Authority granted a modification of the Coat of Arms at the request of the university. The arms are based on the arms of Fraser of Lovat, from whom the university’s namesake was descended via the Frasers of Culbokie. The blue quarters with white “fraises” i.e., strawberry flowers (a pun on the name Fraser) are on the basic Fraser arms, while the white quarters with red crowns are those of Lovat. There are three books at the top of the shield, representing education. The heraldic description of the arms is: “Quarterly; first and fourth Azure three fraises Argent; second and third Argent three antique crowns Gules, all within a bordure quarterly Argent and Gules, on a chief Gules three open books proper, bound and edged Or.” The university’s motto, “Nous sommes prêts”, meaning “We are ready”, is a variation of the traditional motto of the Clan Fraser.

The mace was commissioned by university architects Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey, and was presented to the university at the opening ceremonies on September 9, 1965.

The mace is 61 inches long and weighs 23 pounds. Pieces of cut and polished jade, which were taken from the university’s jade boulder in the Academic Quadrangle reflecting pond, were set in silver by its designer, Haida artist Bill Reid. The mace is crowned by a silver stag’s head, derived from the coat of arms of Lord Lovat, head of the Clan Fraser. The Fraser tradition was to fasten sprigs of yew in their bonnets before entering battle, and the mace was carved from a two hundred-year-old yew, gathered on Burnaby Mountain by a resident in the 1940s.

Lord Lovat presented the university with a claymore, or great sword, on September 9, 1965. The claymore was first used by a Fraser at the Battle of Culloden Moor in 1746. It was also used by a Fraser at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. The claymore is approximately 36 inches long and weighs two pounds.

The university’s flag is based on the coat of arms, and was first flown at the Convocation ceremonies in June 1981.

REGALIA The regalia worn today by our graduates has a colourful history.

Regalia originated in the monasteries of the Middle Ages.

At that time, university faculty were men of religion who wore the habit of their order when teaching. Over time, their garments came to identify their university. In Europe, laymen did not commonly teach in universities until the 19th century.

Only after 1858, for example, did British law no longer require university dons to be in holy orders. Nevertheless, professors continued to wear clerical garb, with modifications in cut and design.

Regalia colours often matched those of the university patron, or of the city in which the university was located; Simon Fraser regalia combines the red and royal blue of the Clan Fraser.

The degree hood was originally part of the monk’s habit — a carryall for food or other small items. Eventually, the hood became separate from the gown, variegated in colour, and emblematic of scholars and degrees from particular universities. Hoods in Canada and Europe are unique in design and colour to each degree and each university.

The history of the mortarboard worn by our bachelor’s and master’s graduands begins with high church dignitaries in the 16th century. These officials wore hats consisting of little more than a cap with a raised, squared crown. By the 18th century, the crown had evolved into a cloth-covered board, and the wearers into the deans and rectors of universities.

The 19th century saw the top knob replaced by a tassel and the cap become required student attire. Reminiscent of the square board masons used to hold mortar, students dubbed the headgear a “mortarboard” — college slang of the day.

Doctoral hats are patterned after the Florentine hats in the time of the Medici. Students purchased hats of the appropriate university colours when continuing with advanced studies after completing the bachelor’s degree.

THE PRESIDENT’S AND CHANCELLOR’S REGALIA In early 2020, following on the Calls to Action presented in SFU’s Aboriginal Reconciliation Council report, SFU undertook to renew the President and Chancellor’s regalia with a design that would respectfully honour the first peoples and the traditional lands on which the SFU Burnaby campus resides.

The motifs that appear on the regalia were chosen and designed

by Hereditary Chief Janice George (Chepximiya Siyam’) and Willard ‘Buddy’ Joseph (Skwetsimeltxw) of the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). Local designer Beverli Barnes designed the gowns.

These motifs can also be seen on the Newxniw’chet (The Teachings) Salish blankets that hang in SFU’s Saywell Hall Atrium. They represent the first peoples that lived on Burnaby Mountain and the food they harvested there. The motifs also represent leadership and nobility, adaptability, the past and the present. Arranged on the gowns in contemporary colours and fabric, the patterns evoke the style of a traditional Salish blanket.

“The Salish blanket, worn as a ceremonial robe, is an object of extraordinary complexity. Said to exist in the supernatural realm, these robes are made manifest in the natural world through Ancestral guidance. Wearing a woven blanket during ritual is transformative, moving the individual from the mundane to a sacred space. They are protective garments that at times of great changes in a person’s life… offer emotional strength.
