classmates, faculty, or staff, will help carry you throughout the rest of your life.

We are living through a period of intense change and uncertainty. There is a lot of doom and gloom out there! But I have always believed that paths to the future are not found, they are created—created by people like you. In fact, I’ve seen first-hand your ability to create change in the world. Students have pushed us to make Reconciliation a priority, to tackle the climate emergency head-on, and to build more equitable, inclusive

campuses where all can thrive. This is work that I know you will continue, no matter where you go next. As you mark this important moment with friends, family, and all those who helped you along the way, please know that whatever path you choose, SFU will always be here for you. I’m so grateful for everything you brought to the university, and excited for the future you will help to create. On behalf of everyone at SFU—thank you, and congratulations. HISTORY The university is named after Simon Fraser, loyalist, fur trader and explorer, who in 1808 completed a great journey in the annals of Canadian history by descending the river which today bears his name. In January 1963, a report recommended the creation of a new university in the Lower Mainland – two months later the establishment of Simon Fraser University received formal assent in the British Columbia Legislature and Dr. Gordon M. Shrum was appointed the first chancellor. From a variety of sites, the chancellor recommended the top of Burnaby Mountain, with its magnificent views of Burrard Inlet, the Coast Mountains, the Fraser River, and Vancouver harbour – the unceded, traditional, and occupied lands of the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), kwikwəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), and xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) peoples. The Vancouver firm of Erickson/Massey won the design competition, but the four runner-up architects each designed at least one building within the overall plan. Construction began in the spring of 1964, and 18 months later, on September 9, 1965, SFU opened to 2,500 charter students. Since then, the university has expanded to downtown Vancouver and the Surrey Central district. The Vancouver campus has grown from a modest storefront offering night school classes in the early ’80s to the largest post-secondary institution downtown. SFU Vancouver’s nine sites offer degree and continuing studies opportunities for students and include several galleries, innovation centres, a student residence, and the internationally renowned Morris J. Wosk

Centre for Dialogue. SFU’s Vancouver campus celebrated 30 years of learning, research and community engagement in 2019. Since 2002, SFU’s Surrey campus has helped define and shape Surrey’s city centre. The campus offers a diverse number of undergraduate, graduate, and continuing studies courses, and is home to world-class, leading edge research in health, energy, and creative technologies. The Surrey campus also supports a thriving entrepreneurial learning environment. The campus currently occupies a stunning facility designed by renowned architect Bing Thom. In the fall of 2019, SFU’s Surrey campus opened its newest 160,000 square foot building, the last project designed by the late Thom. The building houses SFU’s new School of Sustainable Energy Engineering, featuring innovative labs and a 400-seat lecture theatre for both academic and community use. Simon Fraser University is characterized by its adventurous spirit, openness, willingness to embrace bold initiatives, and its commitment to Reconciliation. SFU’s unique educational programs, inspired research, and vibrant community relations set it apart from other universities — in B.C. and in Canada. SFU respectfully acknowledges that its three campuses reside on the traditional, unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), Kwantlen, q̓íc̓əy̓ (Katzie), Qayqayt, Semiahmoo, and Tsawwassen peoples.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS ▼

Dr. Stan Douglas, Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa Thursday, October 5, 9:45 a.m. Ceremony A Stan Douglas is recognized as one of Canada’s most acclaimed contemporary artists, lauded for his distinctive style of telling the stories of transitional periods through various mediums, including video installation and large-scale Credit: Evaan Kheraj ©2020 photography. Through scrutinizing different media, his work informs how they shape our understanding of reality. Collectively his work reflects intellectual and artistic freedom, and pivotal moments in the history of particular spaces, using technologies to upset conventional modes of representation His work has made several appearances at the prestigious Venice Biennale where he represented Canada with his latest work, 2011 ≠ 1848, commissioned by the National Gallery of Canada. He has been recognized with an Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in 2019 and knighted as a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture in 2020. Douglas is currently chair of the graduate art department at the Art Centre College of Design in Pasadena.

Dr. Phyllis Webstad, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa Friday, October 6, 9:45 a.m. Ceremony C As founder of Orange Shirt Day and ambassador for the Orange Shirt Society, Phyllis Webstad has been facilitating dialogue by raising awareness of the Indian Residential School system and creating a space for healing. At age six, she attended a Williams Lake residential school where the orange shirt gifted by her grandma was forcibly removed. The colour became a reminder of “how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared.” Today, as the society’s executive director, Webstad, who is Northern Secwépemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation, devotes her time to sharing her story and has published several children’s books that tell her story in her own words. She acquired diplomas in business administration from the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, and accounting from Thompson Rivers University, which recognized her in 2017 with a distinguished alumni award for her unprecedented impact on communities through sharing her story. Now in its 10th year, Orange Shirt Day is recognized on September 30 as a time to reflect, become educated and commit to Truth and Reconciliation.

Dr. Esther Duflo, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa Thursday, October 5, 2:30 p.m. Ceremony B Dr. Esther Duflo is one of the world’s most highly accomplished economists, a Nobel Prize recipient, and social advocate who has bettered countless lives through her mission to alleviate global poverty. As co-founder of the Abdul Latif Credit: College de France, Patrick Imbert Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics, her research highlights the economic lives of the poor with the view to design and evaluate social policies. Her work in areas of health, education, financial inclusion, environment, and governance, including innovative field research in countries such as India and Kenya, has led to critical policy change and public good. As the youngest person, and only the second woman, to receive the Nobel Prize for Economics, Dr. Duflo was co-awarded the prize for her role in developing a new approach to obtaining reliable answers about the most effective ways to fight global poverty. Her trailblazing fieldwork to improve economic and social conditions in developing countries has made significant strides and laid new foundations in development economics.

Dr. Larry Grant, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa Friday, October 6, 2:30 p.m. Ceremony D Elder Larry Grant (sʔəyəɬəq | 洪禮興) is a widely respected educator and community leader of Musqueam and Chinese ancestry whose tireless efforts have played a key role in revitalizing Musqueam language, culture, and presence throughout Metro Vancouver. He has inspired generations to learn more about Indigenous histories, rights, and relations in Canada, and has played a pivotal role in sharing the history of First Nations and early Chinese migrants in British Columbia through his own family history and connections to Zhongsan, China, and Vancouver Chinatown. After retiring as an automotive machinist and mechanic, Elder Larry enrolled in the University of British Columbia’s First Nations Endangered Languages (FNEL) program to study hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓, the traditional language of Musqueam and neighbouring First Nations. For more than two decades, he has taught in FNEL as an adjunct professor and has served as the Elder-in-Residence at UBC’s First Nations House of Learning. Deeply involved in the Musqueam community, Elder Larry has served as an elected Musqueam councillor and commissioner on the Musqueam Fisheries Commission. Since 2006, he has worked with the Musqueam Language and Culture Department and is currently the department’s manager. 5

GRADUAND SPEAKERS ▼

Graduand speakers were selected by the faculties and the registrar based on student achievement and extracurricular involvement. Joaquin Suarez, BA (Honours with Distinction) Communication Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology Ceremony A Joaquin Suarez graduates with an honours BA in communication and a string of awards and scholarships for his exemplary academic and volunteer work. These included the International Association of Business Communicators’ SAIL Award, the Fred and Elaine Moonen Scholarship, a Radio Station 1320 Award, and an Omni Television Award. His honours research analyzed government and media discourse on sustainable transportation, uncovering structural patterns influencing Canada’s electric vehicle policies. During three Co-op Education work terms, Suarez served as the first student communications assistant to SFU President Joy Johnson; provided financial and career opportunities for Indigenous youth; and directed campaigns to support women’s and children’s rights. In his campus volunteer work, he organized professional development opportunities for hundreds of communication students. He now hopes to pursue graduate studies at McGill University.

Connor Merriam, BSc (with Distinction) Physics Faculty of Science Ceremony C Connor Merriam developed a passion for science communication and teaching during his studies in the Department of Physics. While working as a laboratory teaching assistant in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, he designed and presented online demos for science outreach events hosted by SFU faculty. Off-campus, he volunteered as a math and science tutor at Native Education College, providing indigenous adult learners with individualized support. He also helped conduct interviews with mathematics professors from around the world for a podcast demonstrating how approachable and personal mathematics can be, and worked with an SFU professor to transform a science communication course into a podcast. He received the Teck Scholarship Program Award for four consecutive years. He now plans to become a secondary school science teacher.

Tabatha Mason, BA (with Distinction) Linguistics Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Ceremony B Graduating with a BA in linguistics, Tabatha Mason pursued minors in both French and learning and developmental disabilities. She was named to both the dean’s and president’s honour rolls and received several scholarships. She tutored students at the Linguistics Department Writing Center and volunteered as a research assistant with the Phonological Processing Lab. She was also very involved in student groups, including the French Conversation Club and the French Student Union, and served as president of the Japanese Network. While living in residence she supported students through her work as a community advisor and area coordinator. Off-campus, Mason used her linguistic skills to support people living with Aphasia, which is a communication disorder. She is now continuing her graduate studies at UBC to become a speechlanguage pathologist.

Jennifer Hogan Master of Arts Archaeology Faculty of Environment Ceremony D Jen Hogan is graduating with a master of arts in archaeology after starting and mostly completing a research thesis during the COVID-19 pandemic. The thesis attempted to determine how the form of northeastern B.C. arrowheads and spearheads changed over time, as a way to help date archaeological sites that don’t contain datable materials. For this research, Hogan received a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Graduate Scholarship, the Roy L. Carlson Graduate Scholarship in Prehistoric British Columbia Archaeology, and the Harington Graduate Scholarship for Canadian Cave Studies. Hogan continues to reside in the Lower Mainland, on the unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples. With their academic career complete for now, Hogan hopes to pursue research positions outside academia.

SYMBOLS OF SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY The original Coat of Arms was granted to the university in 1965 by the Lord Lyon, King of Arms, in Edinburgh. The 1965 arms was registered in Canada in 2007. In 2007, the Canadian Heraldic Authority granted a modification of the Coat of Arms at the request of the university. The arms are based on the arms of Fraser of Lovat, from whom the university’s namesake was descended via the Frasers of Culbokie. The blue quarters with white “fraises” i.e., strawberry flowers (a pun on the name Fraser) are on the basic Fraser arms, while the white quarters with red crowns are those of Lovat. There are three books at the top of the shield, representing education. The heraldic description of the arms is: “Quarterly; first and fourth Azure three fraises Argent; second and third Argent three antique crowns Gules, all within a bordure quarterly Argent and Gules, on a chief Gules three open books proper, bound and edged Or.” The university’s motto, “Nous sommes prêts”, meaning “We are ready”, is a variation of the traditional motto of the Clan Fraser. The mace was commissioned by university architects Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey, and was presented to the university at the opening ceremonies on September 9, 1965. The mace is 61 inches long and weighs 23 pounds. Pieces of cut and polished jade, which were taken from the university’s jade boulder in the Academic Quadrangle reflecting pond, were set in silver by its designer, Haida artist Bill Reid. The mace is crowned by a silver stag’s head, derived from the coat of arms of Lord Lovat, head of the Clan Fraser. The Fraser tradition was to fasten sprigs of yew in their bonnets before entering battle, and the mace was carved from a two hundred-year-old yew, gathered on Burnaby Mountain by a resident in the 1940s. Lord Lovat presented the university with a claymore, or great sword, on September 9, 1965. The claymore was first used by a Fraser at the Battle of Culloden Moor in 1746. It was also used by a Fraser at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. The claymore is approximately 36 inches long and weighs two pounds. The university’s flag is based on the coat of arms, and was first flown at the convocation ceremonies in June 1981.

REGALIA The regalia worn today by our graduates has a colourful history. Regalia originated in the monasteries of the Middle Ages. At that time, university faculty were men of religion who wore the habit of their order when teaching. Over time, their garments came to identify their university. In Europe, laymen did not commonly teach in universities until the 19th century. Only after 1858, for example, did British law no longer require university dons to be in holy orders. Nevertheless, professors continued to wear clerical garb, with modifications in cut and design. Regalia colours often matched those of the university patron, or of the city in which the university was located; Simon Fraser regalia combines the red and royal blue of the Clan Fraser. The degree hood was originally part of the monk’s habit — a carryall for food or other small items. Eventually, the hood became separate from the gown, variegated in colour, and emblematic of scholars and degrees from particular universities. Hoods in Canada and Europe are unique in design and colour to each degree and each university. The history of the mortarboard worn by our bachelor’s and master’s graduands begins with high church dignitaries in the 16th century. These officials wore hats consisting of little more than a cap with a raised, squared crown. By the 18th century, the crown had evolved into a cloth-covered board, and the wearers into the deans and rectors of universities. The 19th century saw the top knob replaced by a tassel and the cap become required student attire. Reminiscent of the square board masons used to hold mortar, students dubbed the headgear a “mortarboard” — college slang of the day. Doctoral hats are patterned after the Florentine hats in the time of the Medici. Students purchased hats of the appropriate university colours when continuing with advanced studies after completing the bachelor’s degree.

THE PRESIDENT’S AND CHANCELLOR’S REGALIA In early 2020, following on the Calls to Action presented in SFU’s Aboriginal Reconciliation Council report, SFU undertook to renew the President and Chancellor’s regalia with a design that would respectfully honour the first peoples and the traditional lands on which the SFU Burnaby campus resides. The motifs that appear on the regalia were chosen and designed by Chepximiya Siyam’ (Hereditary Chief Janice George) and Skwetsimeltxw (Willard ’Buddy’ Joseph) of the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). Local designer Beverli Barnes designed the gowns. These motifs can also be seen on the Newxniw’chet (The Teachings) Salish blankets that hang in SFU’s Saywell Hall Atrium. They represent the first peoples that lived on Burnaby Mountain and the food they harvested there. The motifs also represent leadership and nobility, adaptability, the past, and the present. Arranged on the gowns in contemporary colours and fabric, the patterns evoke the style of a traditional Salish blanket. “The Salish blanket, worn as a ceremonial robe, is an object of extraordinary complexity. Said to exist in the supernatural realm, these robes are made manifest in the natural world through Ancestral guidance. Wearing a woven blanket during ritual is transformative, moving the individual from the mundane to a sacred space. They are protective garments that at times of great changes in a person’s life… offer emotional strength. The object, the maker, the wearer, and the community itself are bound and transformed through the creation and use of the Salish blanket”.
