A Year in Review - 2024

As 2024 comes to a close, it’s been a year of remarkable achievements and significant transitions across all Conuma Resources operations. Here’s a snapshot of our progress:

Quintette Mine: A Year of Growth and Milestones

2024 was a year of monumental milestones at the Quintette Mine marked by mining operations resuming on September 5 after 24 years of care and maintenance followed by the inaugural first train loaded on September 17. Throughout 2024, the project and site teams were committed and focused on achieving many construction milestones that improve the efficiency and performance, including environmental, of the Quintette Mine, including:

Modernization of the plant with the completion and commissioning of the first module This work will continue into 2025 with the modernization of module two and three which will increase the capacity of the plant to 1500t per hour

Construction of rail and loadout facilities

Overland conveyor which transports coal from the Windy and Window Pits to the plant The overlander conveyor includes tunnels and wildlife crossings

A low selenium underdrain for the Little Windy spoil which is designed to minimize the impact of mining on the Murray River

The regulatory, engineering, and environment teams worked tirelessly on numerous applications including the Little Windy Restart, that was approved on September 4, 2024, that are necessary for construction and operations to continue in an environmentally responsible manner.

Quintette has quickly risen in prominence, poised to produce more ROM coal in November than any other Conuma mine site has done in the history of Conuma.

Finally, there are no words that can properly express the importance and our gratitude for the support we receive from Indigenous Nations and communities in the South Peace region. Here’s to a bright and successful future for Quintette and Indigenous Nations and communities we work with.

Wolverine Mine: Transition to Care and Maintenance

In April, Wolverine Mine transitioned into Care and Maintenance. Employees and equipment were transferred to Quintette to support its growth and development. A dedicated team of approximately four employees per shift remains onsite to oversee the care and maintenance phase, ensuring the site is maintained to the highest standards

The Wolverine plant is ready to play a role in processing coal from other Conuma sites if needed, ensuring seamless operations across the company

Brule Mine: Transition and Success

The Brule Mine has experienced a year of downsizing, with employees transitioning to Willow Creek and Quintette to support their growing operations Despite this shift, Brule met all its production forecasts and successfully prepared for the mine's projected closure in December

After this date, no further waste movement will occur, and the last of Brule’s coal will be processed at Falls Plant at the Willow The Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) project at Brule is nearing completion, with commissioning scheduled for the first week of December.

Willow Creek Mine: A Record-Breaking Year

Willow Creek Mine shattered all previous records for clean coal production and waste movement in 2024. Safety improvements were equally impressive, with a reduction in incidents and the incredible milestone of 422 days without a Loss-Time Injury (as of November 24th, 2024). These accomplishments, coupled with streamlined operations, have driven the mine’s cost per tonne to historic lows, significantly reducing overall operating costs.

As we close out 2024, we celebrate the successes, adaptability and transitions that have shaped this year. These achievements reflect the hard work and dedication of our teams and our commitment to operational excellence. As we look ahead, Conuma remains committed to safety, operational excellence, partnering with Indigenous Nations, and supporting our local communities.

Here’s to continued success in 2025!

Reminder: Upcoming Christmas Celebrations

We’re excited about the upcoming Christmas celebrations and hope everyone can join in the festivities and have a fantastic time! For those travelling by bus from Chetwynd, we’ve planned some fun activities to make the ride a little more enjoyable Your safety is our top priority, so please take advantage of the safe ride options available at the end of the night Let’s celebrate together while keeping safety in mind!

Quintette

Over the past month, we have been working on revamping the Protecting Our House program at Quintette The revamp is designed to be employee-led and will enhance efficiency, safety, and employee empowerment

Key elements include:

Employee Involvement: Encouraging all employees to contribute ideas for a safer, more efficient workplace. Active participation and innovative ideas from all staff are welcomed to enhance the workplace.

Championing Change: Each department and crew will appoint a champion to facilitate communication between employees and leadership

Timely Responses: The site leadership team will promptly address suggestions Feedback to the crews will be provided during toolbox meetings, on bulletin boards throughout the site and through discussions with the champions

UBC Mine Rescue Team

"On November 9th and 10th, the UBC Mine Rescue Team participated in a training weekend at New Gold’s New Afton Mine in Kamloops, British Columbia. The weekend was part of their preparation for the Mine Emergency Response Development (MERD) Competition, which will take place in Golden, Colorado, this February.

16 team members focused on key mine rescue skills High-angle rope rescue was a central part of the training, with members practicing twin-line systems commonly used in underground operations to safely lower or raise personnel in rescue scenarios These drills reinforced technical accuracy and highlighted the importance of clear communication and cohesive teamwork—essential elements in both training environments and real-life emergencies. The team also worked extensively on their benching procedures for closed-circuit breathing apparatuses (CCBAs), gaining practical experience with the equipment that they will be using in competition to ensure safe entry into simulated potentially hazardous atmospheres.

The weekend culminated in a full-scale underground simulation Two student response teams were deployed into the mine while surface coordinators managed operations at the fresh air base This scenario mirrored real emergency conditions, providing valuable practice in decisionmaking, coordination, and adaptability under pressure for new and more seasoned members alike. This focused training weekend strengthened the team’s technical capabilities and operational readiness, ensuring they are well-prepared to represent UBC and excel at the MERD Competition."

UBC Steel Bridge Design Team

“Since 1999, UBC Steel Bridge has been the representative design team for the University of British Columbia at various international steel bridge competitions and public engineering outreach events The competitions challenge university students to design and fabricate a 1:10 scale steel bridge according to different design constraints each year

As a student-run team, we offer our members the opportunity to obtain a well-rounded experience that simulates industry operations: structural design, structural modelling, construction phasing, and steel fabrication

Our primary goal is to design a bridge that is structurally efficient with optimal weight, stiffness, and constructability. This enables promotion of student-led innovation and design, equipping future leaders and engineers from Canada’s top Civil Engineering program with the skills they need for an increasingly demanding industry."

Conuma’s Growing Collaboration with Saulteau First Nations and West Moberly First Nations Land Guardians

As part of Conuma’s commitment to operating responsibly and with involvement from Indigenous Nations, we’re humbled and honoured to share how we are working with Land Guardians from Saulteau First Nations and West Moberly First Nations as part of the Remote Camera Wildlife Monitoring Program.

The Objective of the Remote Camera Wildlife Monitoring Program Monitoring objectives are to monitor and understand:

Wildlife habitat use,

Wildlife movement corridors,

Wildlife use of targeted features:

- mineral licks,

- sediment ponds,

- wildlife crossings on the Quintette Restart Conveyor

In 2024, a total of 454 cameras have been installed at the Quintette Mine, including Mount Babcock where the Little Windy and Window pits are located and the Mesa-Wolverine area Teck previously mined.

The Land Guardians traverse our sites alongside our teams. Together, we search for signs of wildlife activity such as game trails, scat, mineral licks, and bedding spots—to place cameras in locations to closely monitor the presence and behaviour of local wildlife. The data gathered are collected and then analyzed quarterly, providing invaluable insights into how wildlife are using the Quintette Mine and adjacent area and how our practices, including reclamation, can minimize impacts and enhance wildlife habitat Through this project, the Land Guardians are instrumental, offering us not only their knowledge of the terrain and animal habits but also sharing their deep-rooted cultural understanding of the land a perspective that continues to shape and enhance the effectiveness of our efforts

Reflecting on the collaboration Ryan Lamming shares: “My love for the backcountry has many layers, and working with the Land Guardians over the last year has added another unexpected one. The teachings from the Nations have been tremendous, not only about the landscape and the wildlife but also about their culture. The more we understand their culture, the further we understand the need to collaborate. It’s humbling and exciting working alongside them, and learning their ancient ways that still have a profound effect on today’s workings. I’m proud of Conuma’s commitments and growth thus far, and I’m proud to work with the Land Guardians.”

Through partnerships like these, Conuma continues to grow our impact as stewards of both land and community, ensuring that our mining operations respect the unique environment we’re part of Thank you to everyone involved, and here’s to more milestones to come in our shared journey of environmental responsibility

Critical Safety Training

The goal is to achieve 100% compliance with our critical safety training needs in the near future, and upcoming courses include Fall Arrest, Elevated Work Platform, Confined Space, H2S Alive, and many more Furthermore, in addition to safety training, classes will be offered in mine rescue, mobile equipment operation, and heavy-duty equipment maintenance

A lot of hard work has gone into getting this training in place This was due to the efforts of Chris Homister; Jessica Way and Kristin Farnsworth from the Training department; Justin Park, our Mine Rescue and Emergency Response Manager; and Gerald Noksana, Conuma’s Trades Development Coordinator Thank you to each of them for making this possible!

CORE Audit Report

I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for the hard work and dedication each of you demonstrated during our recent COR audit

We achieved an impressive score of 96%, a reflection of our shared commitment to safety and excellence

It is important to note the auditor’s observations on the positive cultural transformation within our organization. Over the past four years of conducting our audits, the auditor noted a remarkable shift this year, highlighting the enthusiasm and positive atmosphere across departments. Many team members were described as upbeat, engaged, and proud to be part of Conuma.

This cultural progress is a significant achievement, representing the combined efforts each department has made toward fostering a supportive, motivating environment Thank you all for your dedication to building a workplace where people genuinely want to work

There are areas identified for further development, particularly around inspections, company rules, and preventive maintenance We will work diligently to address these elements and communicate the updates with our site crews

Once again, congratulations on this outstanding result and on contributing to Conuma’s journey to become a world-class company, putting safety above all else!

Shout out to Alex Wilson & Miners for Movember!

We’d like to recognize Alex for his dedication to the Movember Movement This initiative is incredibly meaningful to Alex, who is passionate about breaking the stigma around men’s mental health

As Alex highlights, the mining industry poses unique challenges to mental health. Living in an isolated community, working long shifts and hours, and limited exposure to sunlight during winter the months all contribute to the difficulties.

MINERS FOR MOVEMBER

I want to raise awareness about the struggles that men, especially in the mining industry face I've seen the devastation that mental health struggles can cause and I don't want people to feel like they are alone or without support

You can join Alex in raising awareness and funds towards the mental health struggles that people in the mining industry face

Thank you, Alex, for your passion and commitment to supporting men’s mental health and for inspiring our Monthly Safety Meeting topic to focus on mental health throughout November. Together, we can make a difference!

Conuma would like to thank everyone for their contributions to the Protecting Our House Program Your suggestions and ideas will help us work safer, operate more efficiently, and grow stronger!

Suggestion:

We need more light plants in pit and dump areas Days are getting shorter and more hours of darkness Light plants should be set up on the drill patter, dumps, and at important intersections Otherwise, it's too dark

Response from leadership:

This is a great idea, thank you! Lights plants are utilized more often now at these locations.

Suggestion:

A worker asked if we could also use red tape to flag off our trench on top of our barricades - Set up red tape perimeter around open trench to warn other trades.

Response from leadership:

Great suggestion, thank you for taking this on!

Suggestion:

I noticed a lift operator moving into a tight area with no spotter- I spotted him in safely

Response from leadership:

This is an excellent example of how safety is everyone’s responsibility - thank you!

Suggestion:

Projects- During the mock muster drill, we received the alert by someone yelling up at us in a very loud environment while we were up in a AWP in the ceiling. We could barely hear. I suggested to Health & Safety after the muster to put air horns on the interior of the building, not just the exterior This would be much more effective to alert workers and give them quicker reaction time

Response from leadership:

Air horns are now inside the building, and supervisors have been instructed to carry a radio with them Thank you!

Suggestion:

Coming from shop to pit or vice versa, visibility around the corner is poor, especially in light duties Visibility less than stopping distance- Recommend cutting down the harp of material in the corner so visibility is improved. With winter/slippery conditions coming, caution on that corner shoud be advised as visibility is less than stopping distance in its current station.

Response from leadership:

We have cut down the berm at pit entrance. Great suggestion!

Suggestion:

I received a card that noted a town bus did not have the kneeling feature working or not used I checked that they all work and are being used at the town/site pickup and drop-off locations

Response from leadership:

An email was sent to Golden Arrow They will follow up with their drivers.

Suggestion:

The operator placed the bag and belongings behind the fuse panel. I found two fuse blocks broken and unable to hold relays. The wires were hot to touch, posing a risk of causing an electrical fire.

Response from leadership: Thanks for correcting the issue!

Suggestion:

As I was proceeding down the main ramp from the frost shot dump, the 1500 truck coming from my blind side failed to yield to me I had to stop suddenly I initially thought they were yielding but then I realized they were going to turn in front of me

Response from leadership:

It is great that you were attentive to the situation Keep up the great work!

Suggestion:

Make sure the Fire Truck and Ambulance are stocked and packed after the crews used it.

Response from leadership: Great suggestion!

Suggestion:

We were doing a routine PM inspection and noticed one of the mechanics about to go up a ladder that was broken. I stopped them and pointed out the break. Got a new ladder and threw the broken ladder out. We continued to be safe!

Response from leadership:

This is a great example of how safety is everyone’s responsibility. Thank you Brian!
