As part of our commitment to creating meaningful stories that promote the human good, we’re bringing invigorating genres, beyond those we are more known for, to existing and new partners while elevating the local drama production scene. This is evident in our action-packed series, Incognito. We’re constantly opening up new opportunities for our stories to reach even more viewers, by forging mutually beneficial partnerships and getting more of our dramas adapted in the region. This year, we are also putting a stronger focus on our internationallyrecognized game shows, which we believe have the universal appeal and makings of the next big hit.”

Pia Laurel, Sales Head, OTT and Co-production

Since 1953, ABS-CBN has been a premiere source of high-quality Filipino content and primarily involved in high caliber productions for television, online and over-the-top platforms, cable, satellite, cinema, events and radio, for both domestic and international markets. ABS-CBN’s road to transformation provided not only strong affinity with the local audiences, but also agility in going global, with 60,000+ hours sold worldwide in over 50 territories.

Genres

We have everything from FTV-ready romance and family dramas to exciting action and thriller series, both in long form and compressed 20-hour formats. We’re also building our non-scripted IP slate, adding in the recent winner from MIPFormats Pitch 2025: physical game show Save Your Cash to join our other awardwinning game show Everybody, Sing!

Original production/ co-production

Our new action series INCOGNITO – first seen on Netflix Philippines – has been at the top since its launch. It delves into the lives of seven disillusioned people who unite to engage in high-stakes missions. We pulled out all the stops for this drama, with the powerhouse cast training in martial arts, tactical combat and war games to properly portray the relevant expertise on screen – set against breathtaking shooting locations around Italy, Japan and of course, picturesque Philippines.

SAVING GRACE, our adaptation of Nippon TV’s Mother; launched on Prime Video months before TV release, the drama explores the complexities of motherhood when a school teacher whisks away an abused student in an effort to save her. Our version emphasizes strong familial and community ties central to Filipino culture. As a result, a rich, cross-cultural viewing experience awaits our international audiences. The special 14-episode edit exclusive to the platform also topped the charts.

Our newest co-prod. with Viu, HOW TO SPOT A RED FLAG, just ended its run this February. The romcom follows a spunky barista torn between a quirky nice guy and a confident bad boy who are both catfishing her. Marking the two companies’ 2nd project together, the series touches on youth-oriented insights into topics like the “talking stage” and “ghosting”, while tackling real lessons on cheating and how genuine relationships blossom.

Supernatural horror feature film project HYSTERIA, winner of the ATF x EST N8 Horror Pitch 2024 in Singapore, tells the story of a self-righteous priest seeking to end a wave of demonic possessions in a town trapped in its own contradictory beliefs, only to uncover a dark past and his own role in the dreadful phenomenon. We are currently looking for co-producers for this latest IP.

We are thrilled about what’s ahead for 2025, with a dynamic slate of launches across Asia. Highlights include The Traitors, with local adaptations coming soon in both India and Mongolia and with further territories to be announced. We’re also excited to bring Silverback’s premium natural history series Parenthood, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, to audiences across APAC on multiple platforms and networks. And finally, from the award-winning Two Brothers Pictures comes The Assassin, a gripping new action thriller packed with heart and humour. Keeley Hawes stars as a retired female hitwoman about who finds herself on the run from her past with her estranged son, played by Freddie Highmore.

Trends & Outlook in the next 12 months

First, generative AI and hyper-personalisation will be leveraged on more by platforms to tailor experiences, enabling more dynamic and responsive storytelling. This will not only enhance viewer satisfaction but also open new avenues for data-driven monetisation. Sports remains one of the genres that consistently delivers real-time audience attention but will be the focus of fewer platforms given the costs as well as expertise to deliver that best-in-class experience. Third, we foresee a surge in on-ground experiences that are both un-piratable and monetisable – meet-and-greet events with K-stars, concerts, and fan activations and extensions of big hits eg Netfliux’s K-pop Demon Hunters Sing Along in cinemas. These formats offer unique value propositions for both audiences and brands.”

Agnes Rozario, Chief Content Officer, Astro

Genres

Our content strategy is anchored in a 360-degree content approach, ensuring that every title is designed to thrive across multiple platforms – film, TV, OTT, social media, and immersive unpirateable on-ground experiences. This multi-platform mindset allows us to deepen audience engagement while unlocking diverse monetisation opportunities. Astro produces a wide range of genres including TV shows, films, sports, kids programming, animation, travel, live music competitions, and talent search formats. This genre diversity enables us to cater to different audience segments while maintaining creative and commercial agility.

Original production/co-production

Co-productions have worked well in the film space enabling us both domestic and regional exposure for our films and well as strong support from sponsors. We place strong emphasis on original productions, with standout titles such as Aadhira, First Wives, and Big Stage Alpha, a boyband/talent discovery format that has already produced two music hits and built a loyal fanbase. We actively produce and co-produce across film, drama and non-scripted formats, including live shows. Our collaborations with clients and partners often involve developing creative solutions tailored to their audience and brand objectives.

Asia

focus in 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, our primary focus in Asia will be guided by relevance and audience behaviour. We aim to champion local IPs and stories that extend beyond Malaysia, unlocking better monetisation and distribution opportunities with regional partners. Live original formats will remain a core offering, while we continue building a pipeline of digital and social-first content designed for engagement and monetisation.”

Half Man will be the iconic scripted show to watch out for in 2025. It is a six-episode drama series from the multi award-winning Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer, Against the Law), who stars alongside BAFTA award-winning actor Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers, Rocket Man) with the pair playing estranged brothers. The series is produced by Mam Tor Productions (a Banijay UK company) for the BBC and BBC Scotland in co-production with HBO.

Our factual slate is led by Tribe with Bruce Parry, in which TV, filmmaker and indigenous rights advocate Bruce Parry returns to TV after more than a decade. In this new three part series, he travels to visit extraordinary communities, diving deep into their traditional ways of life – including a rare glimpse of the world’s last megalithic culture, The Sumba in Indonesia. The series is produced by Frank Films for BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.

In our format slate, AI Love You – created and produced by Banijay Nordic label Nordisk Film TV, Denmark for TV 2, seamlessly integrates the much talked about AI tech in a deeply emotional human scenario via a life affirming social experiment.

Trends & Outlook 2025

In 2025, we will witness media businesses looking at hybrid models to explore additional revenue streams. Shorter holdback windows for second screen rights will become the norm with key TV shows coming onto a third-party digital platform within hours of premier broadcasting. There is no doubt that there will be an increase in adopting AI across productions which will form an integral part of new format innovations.

Trends & Outlook 2025

2024 was a turbulent year for the TV industry, and it will be no surprise to see the same in 2025 with potentially more M&A and over-supply of content due to fewer buyers. We may see more co-productions as producers are de-risking investment by sharing rights among partners in different regions. Additional consolidation in the streaming sector is also possible, as the number of SVOD services in each country is expected to peak with some trying to stay afloat.”

Asia focus in 2025

To address all those challenges, we have already expanded into scripted format licensing last year. In addition to formats, we own, we helped broker 3rd party format for our Chinese producers. Our company is also taking a lead in a tripartite co-production that involves partners from Europe and Asia on a new scripted project. We value the importance of our traditional distribution business, but we also see the importance of diversification so we will be creative and innovative, not just in production, but how we operate our business in Asia.”

First, international co-productions will gain momentum, fostering innovative cross-cultural storytelling and expanding market reach. Second, strategic intellectual property ownership will be paramount as content becomes an increasingly valuable asset, ensuring sustainable competitive advantages. Finally, the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence is revolutionizing content creation – driving the rise of vertical, mobile-first formats and further solidifying the trend toward short-form content, which has already made significant inroads this year.

Studio facilities across Asia have started allocating dedicated space for vertical video production and new sets are going up as the microdrama race intensifies. Encouraged by outsize growth and soaring financial projections, production facilities are clearly eager to accommodate tight budgets and tighter schedules with custom-created sets that bump right up to each other. In this every-minute-counts environ ment, insiders talk about one-stop shops that allow them to film, for example, scenes in a hospital, a supermarket and a baseball management office located mere steps away from each other. Korea continues to lead Asia’s ability to penetrate international entertainment markets. But this is cold comfort for mainstream Korean drama producers, most of whom have seen commissions, revenues and optimism nosedive in 2025. A combo of streaming shifts, continued erosion of the domestic broadcast environment, and high (many say unviable and definitely unsustainable) production costs have decimated previous euphoria. Dismal earnings reports proved what everyone was talking about anyway, and shot holes in headlines that promoted Korean storytelling as unstoppable. Which it may well be, but it sure doesn’t feel like it right now.

In August this year, for instance, Korean giant Studio Dragon said it was “humbled” by its latest results. Studio Dragon humbled? That has to be a first. The eye-popping admission was followed by filings that showed a 95.8% drop in operating profits for the first half of 2025. Net profit of KRW28.3 billion/US$20.3 million in the first half of 2024 fell to a loss of (KRW1.4 billion/US$1 million) in the same six months this year.

And then there’s public broadcaster KBS, which is not wholly out of the muck it has been buried in for two years or more. The behemoth enters 2026 once again being able to benefit from licence fees collection integrated with household utility bills. For 2026, KBS has said it will present its first balanced budget in years. As part of its relief at having persuaded the powers that be to reverse

the collections issue, KBS looks like it’s going to go full tilt on original content that hyperserves every Korean.

MBC’s financials are also a sorry story. The latest figures available are for 2024, when the publicly funded broadcast platform reported a net profit of KRW 21.5 billion from KRW96.6 billion in 2023.

One of Korea’s bigger questions for 2026 is whether the union between entertainment giant CJ ENM’s TVING and Wavve (the KBS, MBC, SBS, telco SKT JV) will succeed in creating a domestic challenger to Netflix. Conditional approval for the merger has already been given and will be final if the two platforms can prove in 2026 that they aren’t going to fleece consumers. Even so, unless something dramatic happens, David’s chances against Goliath aren’t looking that good.

Netflix has a 60%+ mobile streaming market share. Together, the two Korean platforms have a mobile streaming share of about 25% and about 11 million subscribers (source: Mobile Index data).

The wild-ish card for 2026 is TVING’s deal with Warner Bros Discovery (which has a whole set of separate considerations that will dramatically change its future). On the surface, TVING gets a branded destination on HBO Max in Southeast Asia – a big-love K-drama market – from early 2026.

Right now, Netflix is the sole streaming platform confident enough to release engagement data. We’re working on the assumption that if any other platform beat Netflix, the jubilation would spread far and wide, and there would, surely, be some public announcement. But it hasn’t and they haven’t, so…

Across Southeast Asia, if audiences are not watching domestic titles, they’re fully into Netflix’s Korean series.

Just how well does Korean drama perform in international markets?

Global TV series viewing in the first half of this year belonged squarely to Netflix and, more specifically, to Squid Game, according to Netflix data. Season 2 was the #2 title in the world (840.3 million hours viewed/117.3 million views) behind Adolescence (144.8 million views), followed by Squid Game season 3 in third place (438.6 million hours viewed/71.5 million views). Season 3 released on 27 June – three days before the six-monthly rankings closed. In all, Asia had 13 of the top 100 Netflix titles for the first half. With the exception of Hindi romcom The Royals and Japanese anime series Sakamoto Days, all were from Korea.

Anything else a source of optimism? K-pop Demon Hunters. The U.S. movie is Netflix’s top film of all time. There’s a lesson in there somewhere.
