Letter from the Editor Being pregnant with my first child has been a surreal experience —at once ubiquitous and singular.

I’ve been struck by many of our societal views surrounding pregnancy, those that look at the prenatal period as a kind of in-between time leading up to the main events: birthing and parenthood. All the common questions (“How far along are you?” “Do you know what you’re having?” “Where will you give birth?”) seem to lean forward, rather than linger on the gestational period. It’s strange to exist for the better part of a year in this liminal space. Still, being in the midst of this experience has prompted me to consider what this transitional time might offer—the nuances unfolding in the present.

Many of the artists across this issue allow their work to exist within interstitial spaces. In writing about the work of Nancy Lupo, Lee Purvey notes that interacting with an aesthetic object need not lead us to any clear epiphany. Rather, it’s the very act of looking itself that produces a meaningful exchange. Similarly, Jessica Simmons-Reid writes about Silke Otto-Knapp’s use of undefined space as a material and conceptual meeting ground, a place where the artist often lingered.

While fruitful, these types of in-between spaces can be resistant to any conclusive characterization.

this work can be a difficult one. It exists in a responsive, ongoing capacity that cannot be defined by any particular action. This kind of dynamic, dispersed, and yet cohesive movement continues in Nahui Garcia’s review of for the sake of dancing in the streets at OXY ARTS, which draws out themes of collective action and agency and highlights women who use dance within their protests to amplify their causes. Here too, the work is ongoing and diffuse, with various movements joining into a dynamic conversation.

In this issue we also introduce a year-long photo series, “Works in Progress.” In the series, we will visit artists’ studios, visualizing artworks in their unpolished, unfinished, and unfiltered states. This issue took photographer Leah Rom to the Frogtown studio of multidisciplinary artist Tanya Aguiñiga, for whom the in-progress state of works in the studio is not a means to an end but rather an experimental frontier.

Taking cues from these artists and writers, I’ve been pondering how I can embrace the in-between, rather than mentally rushing ahead to a conclusion or final product.

With pregnancy, as much as there is a desire to project forward to my hoped-for result (a baby!), there are lessons unfolding within this steady process of making. Slowing down enough to allow my body to be present in the here and now is a worthwhile prompt in and of itself.

Still, I attempt to steer around them, refusing to make contact of any kind, refusing to tell them that I have had two children and one abortion in between, thinking all the while—while I am en route to teach photography a hundred feet away—just how successful they have been in weaponizing the same medium.

a ruler, each containing early pregnancy tissue and uterine lining removed via aspiration procedures (gentle suction) during the first five to nine weeks of pregnancy. Dr. Jeffrey Levine, a professor of family medicine and director of reproductive and gender health programs at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, spoke of his experiences with fellows, residents, and medical students: “‘When we examine the tissue after a procedure, everyone is consistently surprised. They expect to see an embryo, fetus or at least some body parts, [and they are] underwhelmed.’”⁸ Photography has so long been strategically wielded as an ideological tool in the anti-abortion struggle that even doctors-in-training were caught off guard by the conflict between what they saw in their microscopes and the images of fetuses, embryos, and/or body parts in their cultural milieu, from high school textbooks to anti-­ abortion propaganda. Though there were only seven photographs in The New York Times article, each small and modestly shot, they exploded my image-based understanding of pregnancy and its termination, from Nilsson on down.

Pictures are powerful in this way. Intellectuals from Hervé Guibert to Roland Barthes to John Berger have differentiated photographs from all other art forms for their function to furnish depictive so-called evidence of truth and lived experience rather than interpretation. “The painter constructs, the photographer discloses,” wrote Susan Sontag in 1977.⁹ Like biofeedback, photographs can change our minds about our bodies.

In 2018, long before the Dobbs v.

Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision was leaked but decades into the slow and steady assault on abortion access, I began thinking about making a project that centered the question of visuality vis-à-vis abortion. Ohio’s then-Governor John Kasich (still seen by many as a “moderate” Republican) had signed into law one of the most restrictive abortion bills at the time,

banning most abortions at 12 weeks with no exception for rape or incest.¹⁰ During that period, I was meeting a group of pro-choice protesters every weekend at the Columbus Statehouse.

We circled the city block again and again with our signs in hand; I had my small newborn strapped to my chest, who slept throughout. As we walked, and occasionally were confronted by counter-protesters, I began to wonder: How might we countermand their photographic stratagem? What would that look like? What are the effects that only pictures can achieve?

Though it began to crystalize then, this is a question that I have carried, that has evolved along with me, for decades. I have long been interested in the visual material that attends and describes motherhood and birth, and am only beginning to understand the ways that abortion access and care work are a central piece of that practice—the ways that the right to be pregnant has everything to do with the right to be unpregnant. Like 60 percent of the women who get abortions in this country,¹¹ I am also a mother, and was already a mother when I got an abortion between the births of my two children. We—those of us who gestate and feed babies from our bodies and bleed for months after birth—know most of all what it takes.

Perhaps because photography has not historically been hitched to abortion rights (beyond the image of the wire clothes hanger), my frames of reference for abortion experiences in art were, and still are, largely non-photographic. I am returned in perpetuity to painters like Paula Rego and Juanita McNeely, and the poet and sci-fi writer Marge Piercy, who depict narratives of fear and indignant rage (“A woman is not a basket,” Piercy begins her poem “Right To Life”).¹² Rego famously created 10 large Abortion Series paintings in 1998, after a referendum failed to legalize abortion in her home country of Portugal. The works, each of which pictures a single figure in a backstreet abortion clinic—many of them on single beds or improvised

operating tables—are dark, confined, and dank-feeling. One haunts me the most of all: a muscular woman wearing a red bandana, sitting up with her back to the wall. She pulls her legs up, ready, and holds our gaze.

The viewer is positioned as her illegal abortionist in a confrontational scene that is at once erotic and painful.

I am so grateful for these works, which are unflinching.

As a person born in California in 1983, my experience with reproductive rights has been different than Rego’s, McNeely’s, and Piercy’s.

Thanks to these brave artists, and so many women in the struggle, I inherited a world where, for the most part, abortion was safe and legal.

My own abortion took place in a clinic with a physician rather than a back alley with God-knows-who; I went home a few hours later instead of bleeding out on a dirty motel floor.

That perspective—of abortion care as safe and ordinary rather than trauma-laced—has informed the art I want to make about it. And in a larger sense, I believe that this is now our political imperative and site of resistance as artists: to normalize, rather than sensationalize, abortion care.

In August, I opened my first solo museum exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, a project that aimed to center the very regular (heath)care work that abortion doctors, staff, and volunteers undertake daily.

My research—which took the form of collecting archival photographs from clinics as well as making images of staffers at work—offered me the great gift of getting to know and build relationships with these folks and their feminist histories. In this way, the project moved slowly, and with tremendous care. In other ways, it moved far too quickly: In just three years, the project had become a race against time, and against the right-wing political machine. The Dobbs decision leaked in May 2022, causing such ripples of grief in me that I had to put the work on hold for some time; the ruling was issued a few months later, officially overturning the constitutional right

to abortion established by Roe v. Wade in 1973 and Planned Parenthood v.

Casey in 1992. Clinics I was working with in Indiana and North Dakota began to shutter in real time. Over and over, I heard clinic staffers repeat a version of the same sentence: “We will provide the last safe abortion in ____.” (Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, fill in the blank). It struck me as the most resolute and elegiac phrase I could imagine. A matter of when, not if.

Returning to the quotidian photographs I’d collected and made—of everything from staff birthday parties to sterilized medical equipment—I held onto this phrase, eventually giving my exhibition this title: The last safe abortion.

As an artist who makes a subject of radical social movement building, I am often ambivalent about what art can do. It is said that Rego’s Abortion Series, of which she created etchings so that images could be widely distributed, helped to persuade the national debate towards the legalization of abortion in the country in 2007.¹³ I desperately hope that is true. I do believe that visuality is a tool to be harnessed in liberation struggle, reproductive or otherwise; the anti-choice movement has been demonstrating as much, quite effectively, for decades.

And it is not incidental that photography, a tool of visual evidence-making different from all other forms of visual representation, has been their weapon of choice.

While it is clear that photography plays a singular role in abortion care work, I still wrestle with art as an ideological and political solution to such an acute and urgent crisis. As I have gone about my project collecting and making photographs of abortion workers in their jobs, I have been amazed by the number of pictures of women answering the phone. (When I was in the clinics, I was likewise struck by the phones ringing off the hook.) Answering the hotline: It is such a basic act, isn’t it? The most banal and lifesaving thing, and, in some ways, the least photographic. But, as I stand there with a camera in my hand, I also can’t help but wonder: Will delib-

erately non-sensational photographs of abortion care effectively countermand the shockingly grotesque (and misleading) way that photographs are instrumentalized by the anti-choice right? And, in either case, why am I taking pictures of other women answering the phone, rather than answering it myself?

In addressing that question, I am reminded of the NGO Women on Waves, founded and run by the heroic and visionary Dutch physician Rebecca Gomperts, which brings (largely pill) abortion services and education to countries with restrictive abortion laws by operating on a boat under international maritime law. Women on Waves —a mobile feminist empowerment and medical operation—also exists as an art project, using art as one of “multiple strategies to promote the message that women have fundamental autonomy over their own bodies.”¹⁴ The organization has participated in inter­national biennials and exhibitions, delivered presentations at art summits such as Creative Time, and initiated a guerilla art installation at the Vatican.

Their artwork often not only speaks to their mission and history, but also involves distributing abortion pills, sometimes using “abortion robots,” as they have done in Mexico, Ireland, and Poland.¹⁵ Women on Waves moves me greatly. By merging art and abortion access rather than using one to make art “of” the other, they have set an example for us. In making work about care, we can and must do the work of caring.

What is the visuality of abortion work? As ever, I can’t say that I know the answer. I can attest that I’ve found a way to make inroads into the question, entangled as it is with the politics of care itself. I am certain that it must center the representation of labor—of real people doing real aid work as opposed to fetus pictures which deliberately void the pregnant person. I am convinced that the volume of pictures matters, as we organize to build our own networks of widespread solidarity.

And, as illustrated through the tireless

work of Women on Waves, the task of representation must be coupled with action and groundwork. The reality is that these kinds of pictures—of steadfast women answering the phone, for example—will never shout as loudly as anti-abortion propaganda, but that is okay. In fact, it’s the point. Our visual vocabulary needs to reflect our ideological movements. As The New York Times story demonstrated, quiet, illustrative pictures have a germane place in this struggle as an ideologically cogent force. And so, I carry on: making pictures and, where I can and in my own way, answering the call.

Spiritual Frontiers in Recent Art and Curation

At the close of the nineteenth century, the American West was not only a geographic and economic frontier but also a spiritual one. The Protestantism that so gripped the Eastern United States loosened as young settlers colonized the furthest reaches of the American continent, where institutionalized traditionalism began, for some, to wane in favor of a more individualist and heterodox orientation towards religion.¹ Christian Science, New Thought, and Theosophy posed compelling alternatives to more dominant beliefs.

As scholar Sandra Sizier Frankiel put it, “a diffuse California mythology arose.”² Palpably skeptical of East coast conservatism, this mythos eschewed codified moral or ethical programs. A nascent interest in South and East Asian spiritual practices baked in the sun and sands of the region’s sweeping desert tundra and staggering cliffside beaches.³ It is not difficult to find vestiges of Frankiel’s diffuse California mytho­ logy around Los Angeles today. Some varieties are explicitly religious, like the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), a nondenominational spiritual organization with several locations spanning Hollywood and the Pacific Palisades that teaches Kriya Yoga,⁴ while others are scholarly, like the Philosophical Research Society (PRS) in Los Feliz, which houses a remarkable library of esoteric and spiritual texts.⁵ But most evidence of this spiritual heritage—from boutique yoga studios to crystal shops, occult apothecaries to manifestation studios—is more banal, part and parcel of the commercial fabric of Southern California. In many cases, these markets

have commodified the more nuanced aspects of Californian spiritualism.

Such imbrications of the mystical with capital have garnered their fair share of criticism. Notably, Western adaptations of Eastern religions and the occult often overemphasize individual identity and personal freedom to the detriment of structural race, ethnic, and class-based struggles.

And, while esotericism and occultism are often cozily entwined with capital, especially in Los Angeles, they have also proven to be indelibly fertile terrain for artistic pursuits that explore the friction between the mystical and the market. Recently, Los Angeles has seen a reinvigorated interest in exhibiting and historicizing work engaged with mysticism, highlighting artists who belong(ed) to a greater cultural milieu of West coasters seeking spiritual transcendence in the early twentieth century and beyond. While these earlier artists tended to refuse the art economy in favor of their individual pursuits, some contemporary artists are bridging the material and spiritual by incorporating critiques of capital into their work.

Many midcentury artists grew disillusioned with the burgeoning art market of their time, instead cultivating alternative lifestyles that enabled art-making on their own terms. One such group was recently the subject of the touring exhibition Another World: The Transcendental Painting Group, 1938–1945, on view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) this summer. In 1938 Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico, this cohort of artists allied in their common desire to reject the aesthetic trends and art markets of New York and Europe in order to access their vision of the spiritual through art.

The artists involved—including Emil Bisttram, Raymond Jonson, Robert Gribbroek, Lawren Harris, and Agnes Pelton (a member of the Transcendental Painting Group [TPG] in absentia, as she spent her artistic maturity living in the desert near Palm Springs⁶)—had varying degrees of commitment to any one religion, but they shared a distrust

of modernity, an interest in the occult, and a devotion to representing that which lies “beyond the appearance of the physical world…[in the] imaginative realms that are idealistic and spiritual.”⁷ For the TPG artists, the effort to access the divine to the exclusion of the greater social world necessitated a rejection of the arts economies burgeoning in global capitals.

Through their geographic isolation from urban cultural centers, the artists of the TPG were better able to detach from visual and political conventions shaping the commercial art world at the time, most notably social realism and the proto-New York school of abstract art.⁸ Agnes Pelton left New York even while her career was budding in the region,⁹ while Jonson refused Josef Albers’ invitation to join the American Abstract Artists alliance in 1937.¹⁰ To be sure, the group still exhibited at institutions across the United States—at the Museum of Non-Objective Painting (now known as the Guggenheim Museum) in 1940, for instance¹¹—but their steadfast seclusion from the mainstream market and its rubrics of salability allowed them to take an eccentric, often polarizing approach to painting. For instance, the repeated presence of the egg, a theosophical symbol of generation, grounds many of their highly geometric compositions, evident in many of the paintings on display at LACMA. In Bisttram’s nocturne Oversoul (c. 1941), overlapping ovoid orbs are superimposed atop a blue ground with white stars, dotted like a night sky. Also unconventional for the time, the artists often favored romance and mood within their abstractions; Pelton’s Winter (1933) features a glowing rondure in the center of the composition, but is contextualized by a more sentimental—rather than punctiliously geometric—atmosphere featuring doves, soft patches of snow, and whirling flower petals.

Similarly to how the artists of the TPG disentangled from their contemporary art circuits in pursuit of mediating between the physical world and that which lies beyond consciousness,

painter Alan Lynch repudiated the art market in pursuit of a more isolated artistic practice alongside his study of Sōtō Zen Buddhism. Lynch was immersed with the artists of the mid­­ century California avant-garde, many of whom were energized by inquiries into the subconscious, developments in abstraction, and new popular forms of visual culture like comics and advertisements. In this climate, Lynch exhibited publicly for a short 10-year period, after which his artistic practice became more private, meditative, and spiritual. Lynch’s work formed the centerpiece of The Disappearance of Rituals, a group exhibition at Château Shatto this summer that marked the first public exhibition of the artist’s work since he left behind the commercial art world in 1969.¹² The exhibition centered on a series of previously unexhibited protean watercolors produced while Lynch was pursuing ordination as a monk. The works are themselves meditative in their small scale and similar compositions, as though the ritualistic pace of Zen study was incarnated through his artistic work.

Like the work of the TPG artists, Lynch’s framed paintings are socially disengaged and often contain curving forms that sometimes appear bio­­ morphic, sometimes geologic. Untitled (1978) depicts six curving tentacles emanating from the lower-right-hand corner like algae. A sandy halo radiates from behind or between them, fading into an opalescent wash that merges into deep blue at the artwork’s edges. Four similar watercolors of the same scale hung to the right, iterating Lynch’s approach to painting simple, abstract forms. Here, Lynch was responding to the tensions embedded within the California mytho­logy—the pursuit of spiritual freedom that paradoxically relies on the material trappings of capital and colonialism—by innovating spiritual abstraction, as did the artists of the TPG. Silke Otto-Knapp’s Permeable Worlds

Upon her death of ovarian cancer in October 2022, a brutal disease that she battled for two years amidst the equally brutal reign of the pandemic, the Los Angeles-based, German-born artist Silke Otto-Knapp had spent 18 months working on a solo exhibition for Galerie Buchholz in New York, which opened a mere 19 days after her passing. Entitled Versammlung, a German word that translates to assembly or gathering, the site-specific exhibition featured three large, grayscale triptychs rendered solely in black watercolor —a medium usually reserved for paper but uniquely adapted by the artist as a pigment for canvas.¹ These freestanding hinged paintings adopted a sculptural footprint, occupying the small gallery like loosely folded accordions—a gathering of sorts that positioned the work in dynamic physical proximity to the viewer, collapsing the distinction between painting, sculpture, and stage set.

Often directly referencing photographs of early- to mid-twentieth-century experimental dance and theater practices (such as Bauhaus choreography and the work of Bertolt Brecht), the compositions depict the bodies of performers as faceless silhouettes slipping across thresholds and bleeding into other discrete forms.² In Untitled (Versammlung) III (2022), for example, a monochromatic mirror image of embracing or perhaps merging bodies —one black and one white, suggesting a photographic negative and positive— bookends a dim, lunar sphere; in another, the figure of a ribbon dancer melts into a serpentine coil.

Inhabiting the In-Between

Although painted near the end of her life, the evocative (Untitled) Versammlung paintings allude to a pictorial in-betweenness, marked by blurred thresholds and a series of elusive forms, that had been a consistent source of inquiry within Otto-Knapp’s oeuvre. This summer, Regen Projects presented a posthumous solo exhibition of works predominantly made in the last five years of the artist’s life, further illuminating the repertoire of ineffable motifs that dwell within her paintings.

Curated by Kitty Scott, the meditative presentation of watercolor paintings and works on paper neither included works from the (Untitled) Versammlung series nor any other freestanding paintings—a curious omission. Nonetheless, the selected works spoke to the depth and complexity of the gestural language that Otto-Knapp had been meticulously forging across her lifetime, despite working in a medium often deemed too illustrative for painting’s more sophisticated pursuits.³ Much like the paintings in Versammlung, the late works on view at Regen Projects reveal Otto-Knapp’s penchant for delving into liminal (and subliminal) motifs—from clouds to silhouettes to negative space itself—and ability to milk conceptual complexity from even seemingly simplistic forms. While her earlier works often incorporated hazy sheens of color, here, her singular focus on black-andwhite imagery positions her paintings as fruitful vehicles for allegorical interpretation, with the dichotomy of these two tones suggesting either the rigidity of binary absolutes (either black or white) or, more intriguingly, the fluidity between opposing yet intrinsically interconnected forms (light and dark, day and night, positive and negative).

Crucial to any reading of Otto-Knapp’s work, however, is the spectrum of gray space that exists in between. While we can refer to these “gray areas” as spaces of liminality—a catchall term for the fuzzy indeterminacy of transitional states—in the case of Otto-Knapp’s paintings, these mutable spaces act as connective thresholds between discrete

forms, ideas, or things—a notion that the artist herself summarized as “negative and positive space meeting.”⁴ Here, “meeting” is the operative word: Pointing to moments of touch or convergence, Otto-Knapp’s vocabulary of in-betweenness shuns passivity and instead functions as a haptic and dynamic mode of gestural expression, anchoring her conceptual and material investigations. Ultimately, rather than inhabiting a world of absolutes, her paintings posit that the latent space between things can be as ripe and fertile as the individual things themselves.

Etymologically, the term “liminal” stems from the Latin word “līmen,” meaning threshold or doorway; the word “limen” is also used to refer to the physiological threshold at which a sensation, such as pain or consciousness, becomes detectable.

Anatomically, a limen also denotes the opening of a bodily orifice—the threshold between our interior and exterior worlds. If conceptually, liminality describes an overall condition of suspension, physically, a limen is a more acute (yet still elusive) transition point between discrete forms or states of being. Otto-Knapp’s work engages with the intricacies of both meanings of the word. Although she does not portray thresholds in the form of bodily cavities, she does depict a variety of other physical and metaphysical limins in her illumination of transitional spaces, such as the seams where conjoined canvases or compositions meet, the indistinct expanse between figuration and abstraction, or the airy chasm between earth and sky.

Otto-Knapp’s material process similarly harnessed elements of transition. To create her paintings, she meticulously layered her canvases with vivid, jet-black watercolor pigment, wiping and washing it away to reveal a mist of gray tones—a gestural choreography that revels in the latent space between mark-­making and erasure.

She then physically manipulated the canvas to propel the floating pigment across the surface of the work, attempting to control how it puddled and soaked

into the skin of the canvas. While the act of painting inherently engages the body, the relationship between an artist’s body and their canvas—steeped in the physics and contingencies of close, careful touch—is uniquely intimate.

Otto-Knapp’s process involved harnessing the fugitive pliability of her medium, conducting the movement of the pigment as it quickly shifted from liquid to dry matter and thereby elevating the importance of transitional material states. Her resulting surfaces bear the translucent gestures of watercolor yet simultaneously mimic the mottled, earthy textures of charcoal or graphite, a visual sleight of hand that positions the work between the margins of various media. Here, she acted as an alchemist, ferrying her paint from one state into another and reveling in the anticipatory space that exists at the thresholds of the transformation.

The subjects of Otto-Knapp’s compositions—spectral bodies and hazy silhouettes that ambulate against washy voids—often infiltrate the physical boundaries of the works themselves. In two small monochromatic works on paper with nearly identical compositions (installed beside one other at Regen Projects), a faceless figure lies on its side, perched on its elbow as if leisurely reading a book. In each work, a loosely painted frame encloses the figure, whose arm reaches toward the lower right corner of the paper, perhaps grasping for something unseen.

In the first, larger work (Untitled, c. 2021), the figure’s outstretched arm touches the painted frame, as if acknowledging its containment. In the second (also Untitled, c. 2021), the figure’s hand grazes the edge of the paper itself, as if attempting to perceive the world beyond it. While humble compared to the larger, more complex paintings in the exhibition—I nearly brushed by these works on my first viewing of the show—their quiet interrelationship hints at the nuances inherent to OttoKnapp’s defined interest in thresholds.

The figure’s subtle shift from one work to the next suggests an unseen transformation, resulting in the quiet

breaching of a boundary. The spatial and temporal pause between these two compositions functions as a moment of inferred action, much like the brief interlude that occurs when a dancer transitions between movements.

The pairing of these two works activates the blank, marginal space between them, pointing to the frame as an imperfect system of containment, and suggesting that even firmly defined boundaries are more porous than we think.

In addition to her figurative works, Otto-Knapp frequently invoked the visual poeticism of the natural world, innately rife with slippery thresholds.

A cloud, for example, is a perfect liminal form: A nebulous buoy between earth and sky, it inhabits a realm of perpetual suspension, as in Otto-Knapp’s largescale painting Clouds (2021), which occupied Regen Projects’ central wall.

A response to Georgia O’Keefe’s Sky Above Clouds IV (1965), which depicts a tableau of abstracted, cell-like clouds as seen from an airplane window, Otto-Knapp’s painting adopts a similarly vaulted perspective, as if both artist and viewer were dangling in the sky.

Composed of five canvases fused to form an irregular polygon, the grayscale watercolor composition depicts pillowy clouds rendered in ash, bone, and charcoal tones. These clean, puffy shapes threaten to breach the edges of the painting, once again suggesting the canvas’ fallibility as a concrete margin.

While O’Keefe’s painting connotes the spiritual tranquility of calm horizons, Otto-Knapp’s work appears dark and dynamic, as if on the cusp of thunder.

Its presence is seductive and formidable: When I encountered it for the first time, I registered a strange mélange of awe, pleasure, reverence, and curiosity, much like awaiting the ferocity of a looming storm (and this was before learning that Clouds was among the final works created before her death). While imposing a biographical reading on a work can muddy its viewing, it’s difficult not to view this painting through a lens of mourning.

A billowy sky on the brink of a squall can denote the emotional heft of grief or melancholy; it can perhaps also be read as a metaphor for the tumult that accompanies the process of creation. And, although Otto-Knapp’s conceptual engagement with forms of liminality far preceded her diagnosis (which by no means defines the context of her work), there is nonetheless a certain poetic solemnity to the notion that she labored over this shifting skyscape while herself approaching an existential threshold.

Decidedly evocative of the in-­ between, Otto-Knapp’s faceless bodies, merging silhouettes, and ominous clouds can ultimately be interpreted as sentinels from the artist’s subconscious: an assembly of gestures that reside at the meeting point—a particularly palpable, fertile, and active threshold— between subliminal ideation and artistic creation. Whether physically, through process and form, or conceptually, her work establishes liminal thresholds not only as spaces to navigate through, but also as palpable gatherings rife with material tension.

On the Day of Remembrance 2022, the 80th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066, which authorized the forced removal and evacuation of Japanese Americans on the West Coast, Devon Tsuno shared an Instagram post detailing the story behind sixteen cents each and a stage for plunder (2022), a project that had been commissioned by the Descanso Gardens for the annual celebration of its famed camellia collection.¹ Scholar Wendy Cheng has characterized the history of Descanso Gardens and its camellias as “an instance of racial plunder: a morally and affectively inflected act of theft structured by racism that is as much about the act’s preconditions and afterlives as it is about the act itself.”² Tucked into the hills of La Cañada Flintridge, Descanso owes the existence of its camellia collection to Los Angeles newspaper owner Elias Manchester Boddy’s wartime purchase of the stock of multiple nurseries in the days before their Japanese American owners and families, including the Yoshimuras and the Uyematsus, were forced into incarceration with the signing of Executive Order 9066. Star Nurseries provided Boddy with a collection of camellias—many of them rare breeds—that had been imported, cultivated, and developed by its owner Francis Miyosaku Uyematsu, known as “the camellia king.” In the ensuing decades, Uyematsu, like the other nursery owners, was not credited for this contribution to the Garden’s beginnings, and many of the breeds

Uyematsu developed are to this day identified with Boddy’s family name.³ Such stories of wartime profiteering are devastatingly common —incarceration-related economic losses for the Japanese American community are estimated to be between $1 and 3 billion without inflation.⁴ During the course of her research in 2020, Cheng connected with Descanso Gardens to illuminate some of her findings, joining journalist Naomi Hirahara, who had been contributing research on the history since 2018. Descanso has since updated its website to include the Uyematsus’ and Yoshimuras’ stories, and a planned future renovation to the Boddy House will include a room dedicated to the history of the camellias.

Tsuno, an artist known for painting native and nonnative flora as visual stand-ins for uncomfortable questions related to the history of Los Angeles, created a proposal for Descanso Gardens that was informed both by Cheng’s research and the poetry of Amy Uyematsu, a granddaughter of the original Star Nursery owners whose work has been foundational in the Asian American Movement. Uyematsu and other Japanese American poets had been planning an outdoor reading at Descanso in February 2022.

Inspired by Uyematsu’s poem about the red camellia, Tsuno proposed a painting that would be digitized and turned into a vinyl wrap for the outdoor stage. He was eventually able to produce both pieces, though the process of the works’ making, circulation, and continued existence remains fraught.

Earlier this year, Uyematsu passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. This loss to our community, as well as the uncertain status of Tsuno’s project, prompted my conversation with Tsuno. He and I are both yonsei, or fourth-generation Japanese Americans, as well as fourth-generation Angelenos. We have been engaged in a years-long

dialogue about navigating our lives as art workers, grounded by shared histories of Asian American organizing and solidarity. As is the case for much of Tsuno’s artwork, this conversation seeks to continue dialogues around finding new forms of cultural preservation and solidarity, out in the open, together.

Ana Iwataki: How did Descanso Gardens first approach you about working together?

Devon Tsuno: They told me that they had hoped I would do some type of art project for their annual celebration of the camellias because they were familiar with the work I had done painting [the] flowers and plants of Los Angeles.

I [initially] offered criticism about [Descanso’s] description of how they came to exist. I felt that the narrative [as they were telling it] was inaccurate from my knowledge about it and that it positioned the institution as a white savior of this [camellia] collection. I didn’t want to perpetuate that narrative.

AI: How did they respond?

DT: They seemed surprised I was so critical. But they said that the institution was working with Wendy Cheng to take steps to correct that writing.

They didn’t seem to have a budget [for my project] thought through, and they hadn’t completed [the] process of rewriting [their] narrative. I told them that I wouldn’t do the project until those things were completed. [I also asked] if the family was aware of my work and into the idea of me doing something.

AI: What do you think Descanso was hoping an artist could do that they couldn’t?

DT: [I felt like they were] looking for artists who [would] celebrate the beauty of the narrative that they’re presenting.

It’s also a way for them to show, in a public-facing way, that they’re working with communities of color, especially in correcting mistakes the institution has made over their existence.

AI: What happened to make you accept the project?

DT: [Some time] had gone by and, to my surprise, [Descanso] emailed me and said that they had spoken to the family, who would be happy to see me do a project. They had come up with a budget for the project and they had completed the work they were doing with Wendy Cheng to correct the writing on their website. So, I accepted, [and] start[ed] the conversation about what the project would be.

I wanted to find a way to amplify Amy Uyematsu’s poetry. The painting I made is an abstraction of those red camellias, one of the rare breeds her grandfather propagated. Red can be an ambiguous color—it can be beautiful, but it can also be violent, very intense… but also very calming. I tried to embody that in the color and the layering of the acrylic and spray paint.

I thought that would be a beautiful way to participate and to direct focus to Amy, because it’s her family’s history.

I requested that Descanso purchase the painting for their permanent collection and put it in public view. [I wanted them] to honor the family and have the narrative be seen in the didactic of that painting. [P]eople should be aware of [that history] when they visit Descanso.

I titled it sixteen cents each and a stage for plunder, which is the amount that [Boddy] paid per plant to Amy’s family.⁵ The word “plunder” comes from how Wendy Cheng has written about Descanso Gardens and the camellia. I thought it was, again, important to amplify and be true to the language of other people who had already been doing the work.

This was really the only way it would be appropriate for me to do a piece.

It couldn’t be something that was temporary to celebrate the annual bloom of a flower.

AI: Wendy’s writing focuses on the camellias as a way of addressing broader systems—looking at how one camellia got to the gardens helps you untangle something that’s

a big mess. And so, by asking you to make a project about the annual camellia celebration, they were really asking you to address the very reason why Descanso Gardens exists. That seems like a difficult ask because the story goes way beyond the annual celebration.

[of] why I made the piece and what had happened to Amy’s family, and why it was important that people knew.

There was a huge response by not only the art community and the Japanese American community but also people just wanting to see [the piece, but it had already been taken down].

DT: Definitely. I was probably naive, but I felt that it was a moment for me to take a risk even though I knew there were a lot of hurdles.

After the painting was done, they said that now, they didn’t think they could afford to wrap the stage with the vinyl, and asked if they could use the [digital artwork] and turn it into banners. I told them: “This isn’t decoration for your festival. This is an artwork and process that was intentional, and was created with the blessing of the family.” I was ready to give up, but kept reminding myself it wasn’t for me. It was really to honor Amy and their family.

AI: It’s so challenging because artists are asked to bring different perspectives. But when presented with what that means, it’s often not what institutions actually want.

AI: Right. You didn’t want to leave them alone in this struggle as Descanso tried to figure out their responsibility to the Japanese American community.

DT: They pretty much said they couldn’t do it because of the budget. [A]nd even though I was frustrated, I decided to let go of that aspect of the project. It only ended up happening because one of the fabricators, the Wilson Cetina Group, reached out to me and said they felt so strongly about the project [that] they would do it within the budget constraints. I was very against the institution accepting that, [but] Eder [Cetina] from Wilson Cetina convinced me, because he [had] heard about the context of the piece.

And then, I found out about the event celebrating the camellias with the poetry reading through an ad on Instagram that popped up in my feed on the day of. I had not been invited. There was no acknowledgment of my piece anywhere on their website, on social media, or at the event.

So on the Day of Remembrance, the anniversary of E0966, I made an Instagram post to tell the story myself

DT: I email [Descanso] periodically to ask if the painting is on display yet.

They always respond with a very nice email saying they’re planning on displaying it in the remodeled Boddy House in a room dedicated to the history of the camellias.

AI: Descanso Gardens didn’t acknowledge Francis Uyematsu for so long.

He created breeds of camellias and Boddy took credit for them. And to do the same thing to another Japanese American, in an effort to repair this whole history, demonstrates a lack of understanding of the underlying issues.

DT: For me, one of the big lessons learned is that I was never trying to repair the issue. I was trying to attack the issue.

I think Wendy’s writing says it really well. We default to the word “development” [to describe the families’ role in Descanso’s history], but it was plunder… I think we’ve come to a point, especially in Los Angeles, where we no longer can survive on our own as a cultural group. I think our generation is starting to understand that our survival also is contingent on other people surviving.

The very little bit of privilege that we do have as Japanese Americans, having our parents and grandparents survive so that we could make it to this point, we feel very obliged to use that privilege and to relinquish it to other people. The only way we can learn how to do that in an effective way is to understand how it was taken from

us—how plunder works, how it shaped our history. That’s the road I’ve been going down. And it’s not a road that any artist can go down by only making art. It’s my belief that you have to do the work in your daily life as an artist, but also as a human being. That [work] has to become necessary, even though capitalism tells us that making money and being a middle-class American is how you survive, which actually isn’t true.

AI: How has your family history helped you think through these issues?

DT: My family’s been here since around 1910. [But] because so much of my cultural history has been erased from common knowledge, it’s been a process of peeling back the layers, going backward in time to learn about my own history and my family’s role in the development of what’s now Southern California… Different people in my family have fought for equality and social justice over those four generations through their labor, through education, and through the arts. It took 40 years for me to really understand that’s what I was doing.

I know that there are huge gaps.

I have to seek those things out. And oral history is how it’s passed on. I’ve learned that from other artists, like Alan Nakagawa and others from the generation before me. It’s just been a process and it’s been enjoyable even though there are moments of frustration, like this project. I don’t regret doing any of it. You told me one time that the struggle has to be in public view.

[T]hat’s really stuck with me.

AI: I think that we share a concern for how culture functions in the landscape that you’re talking about, in the development of Southern California as a place that we’re engaged in, but also where similar attempts of facilitating racial justice are really mishandled. It’s very difficult to know how to navigate that.

DT: I think it’s really easy to give up.

Sometimes I want to give up and stop

making work, but I also know that that’s what I do best. And even though I make mistakes and fail, it’s something that I have to continue to do. We’re all trying to survive in a system of capitalism, and artists have to do so as well. And, to stop being an artist, or to stop making work, or stop showing work, for me, is surrendering.

Filled with what she fondly refers to as “weirdos,” Tanya Aguiñiga’s Quonset Hut studio is perched on the Los Angeles River. She says this vantage point adds a certain power to the space, helping her harness feminine energy. into the movements of the computerized chairs.¹ But the most inquisitive aspect of PLAY is that the chairs were programmed to continuously learn from their movements and interactions with the audience—they were learning to play, fine-­tuning their performances along the way.

Here was artificial intelligence throwing a wrench in performance theory.² Naturally, I was hooked.

I can’t advance the same enthusiasm about Denominator (2020–22), Fischer’s most recent jaunt in Los Angeles presented with Gagosian. Rather than chairs, Fischer turned his algorithmic theater on TV commercials—story-driven images pedaling products that we think we need.

Installed inside a former Wells Fargo Bank on North Camden Drive in Beverly Hills (a temporary site for Gagosian exhibitions), Denominator is an endless montage of commercials culled from social media and broadcast television dating back to the 1950s, when color TVs first landed in U.S. homes.³ Fischer and his team scraped the likes of YouTube (where many ads can be accessed) and TikTok, archiving an initial 70 thousand commercials from across the globe. The artist submitted these ads to machine-learning algorithms (e.g., CLIP-trained models), which used customized code to cut up and then categorize the commercials by content, color, and composition.⁴ Presented as a deluge of deconstructed imagery, the slapdash sensibility of Denominator deviates from mass-produced advertising in that there’s no clear audience in mind. What, then, is being sold? Nothing new

beyond what’s already in the ether. This is partly why my enthusiasm wavers towards Denominator relative to PLAY. While the latter work evinced an uncanny surprise, if I strip away the masterful, albeit clichéd, storytelling in TV ads, what Denominator regurgitates are semblances of image spam that ultimately generate the same consumerist impulse.⁵ In form, however, Denominator captivates—the piece is a colossal, 12-foot video monitor cube that plays its breakneck footage on all of its visible surfaces. The ads appear in incomplete clips, completely siphoned off from their original commercial context. In one sequence, a cute cat crouches before a bowl near another clip of a tennis player in a white shirt, his back hunching away from the camera in an echo of the crouched feline. Other cat ads, such as the “Mjau Mjau Mjau Flygresor.se” commercial, inexplicitly surround the tennis player. What you get is a “physically compelling” montage of ads that visually captivate, such that “our eyes are almost continually drawn to the screen.”⁶ Compelling, however, turns to cute, chaotic, and then visibly confused. It’s all very bizarre and zany, if we understand theorist Sianne Ngai’s definition of zaniness as “physical bombardment” that pushes toward “strenuous and even precarious extremes.”⁷ Indeed, sitting with this glut of video montages not only requires effort, but would also take a lifetime.

Consider this, though: Fischer wanted to present these commercials in a way that deemphasized their narrative pull and honed in on the marketable images

June 3–July 29, 2023 In 2019, the Chilean performance collective LASTESIS staged the participatory protest Un violador en tu camino (A rapist in your path) outside a Valparaíso police station. Videos of the demonstration, which expressed urgent concerns around gender-based inequality and violence, quickly spread online: Women publicly reenacted its choreographed movements in various protests across Latin America and elsewhere. In unity, the protestors sang about sexual violence, punctuating their message with synchronized stomps and symbolic postures, crouching on the ground as if placed under arrest.

LASTESIS, whose name translates to “the theses” in English, creates performances that aim to make feminist theory more accessible. Their communications approach, which emphasizes sharability and virality, has been central to the growing momentum of the feminist movement in the Global South and beyond.

The exhibition for the sake of dancing in the street, organized by Yasmine Nasser Diaz in collaboration with Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) at OXY ARTS, celebrated the artists and collectives driving this movement. While many elements of the exhibition referred specifically to LASTESIS’ work and impact, others pointed to global feminist movements that have utilized similar

shared in tweets to protest the death of Jina “Mahsa” Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman who was killed on September 16, 2022, while in police custody for violating the hijab mandate (the song’s lyric “for the regret of living an ordinary life” amplified the urgency behind these demonstrations).¹ Through the use of such media, orchestrated protests in the form of dancing and chanting gain potency in the digital realm, forging solidarity networks that transcend geographic frontiers.

On a television screen in OXY ARTS’ lobby, LASTESIS presented compiled footage of women performing Un violador, blindfolded (both to conceal their identities and in reference to the use of blindfolds in policing), chanting the protest’s lyrics—“Y la culpa no era mía, ni dónde estaba, ni cómo vestía” (and the fault wasn’t mine, not where I was, not how I was dressed)—while moving in unison. According to academic theorist Diana Taylor, dance carries embodied knowledge that is transmitted not through written records, but through reenactment²—the dynamic movement of the performers is part of what made this particular protest so effective and widespread. There is a rich legacy of artist-driven feminist protests that are multidimensional experiences, accessed through active participation. Because more recent stagings have been engineered for social media platforms, they are readily

available for viewing by new audiences. This virality starkly contrasts the sometimes-­ hermetic concealment of institutional archives of protest movements, which are only available to those who seek them out.

Elsewhere in the exhibition, the international feminist mapping community Geochicas created an interactive world map tracing the global impact of Un violador.

The touchscreen map archived videos of the protest shared on social media and marked their corresponding location with purple geotags—the locations range from major landmarks like Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía to remote areas such as Turkey’s Mount Ida.³ Each location highlights the protest song’s influence and ability to adapt to various contexts across the world, providing a connective battle cry—the protest song’s lyrics have been translated into more than 22 languages, with modified verses to reflect the prismatic spectrum of feminism’s struggles.⁴ A risograph poster printed by Entangled Roots Press, a radical printmaking project based in Portland, Ore., featured English and Spanish trans­ lations of LASTESIS’ lyrics in black sans serif font, stark against yellow illustrations of crossed arms. Stacked on a shelf for visitors to take, the posters included instructions for reenacting the accompanying choreography, a tactile gesture that contrasted the mostly digital methods that have been used to disseminate the demonstration.

LASTESIS’ work also provided context for curator Nasser Diaz’s contribution to the exhibition. Played on a 1990s television set, her

two-channel video installation For Your Eyes Only (FYEO) (2021–23) incorporates video documentation of Un violador being performed in Tunis, Kolkata, and Istanbul, pointing again to the global community the protest song has helped to cultivate. The installation, which unfolded in a separate room from the rest of the exhibition, took the form of a teenager’s bedroom. A rotating disco ball illuminated a collection of curated possessions, including Nawal El Saadawi’s book The Hidden Face of Eve (1977) atop a dresser; an ACLU Know Your Rights (2021) booklet on a pink plush carpet; and a T-shirt emblazoned with “Free Palestine” hanging from a laundry basket. Many of the items are reflective of Nasser Diaz’s formative years, growing up in the United States during a period of heightened political awareness as the daughter of Yemeni immigrants. Others engage the current moment, drawing a connective thread between past and present liberative struggles.

Projected above a twin bed in the installation, TikTok videos and Instagram stories featuring femme and queer people from the Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) diaspora danced joyfully while a looping techno track by Beirut-based sound artist Carol Abi Ghanem played in the background.

The video installation, a convergence of music and dance, was a refusal of the inherent risk involved in asserting bodily autonomy in spaces that seek to repress it. During an exhibition walkthrough, Nasser Diaz brought attention to the unjust arrests of Middle Eastern women

who have been publicly shamed for recording themselves dancing. Her focus on movement echoes LASTESIS’ protest strategy, which transcends online censorship and oppressive state laws around movement by refusing to abide by repressive mandates. These works provide an alternative means of engaging in political demonstrations, exhibiting a strong emphasis on women’s safety and a profound understanding of their respective contexts.

Social media has strengthened the connections among global feminist communities by embracing a chorus of voices that grows louder with each share, repost, and restaging. While protest ephemera finds its way into archives, a pertinent question arises: What becomes of the transient exchanges taking place during protests, the fleeting tunes and intimate dance moves? For the artists enjoined at OXY ARTS, the digital landscape provides a space for these exchanges to live and live on, celebrating collectivity through movement and transmitting and reveling in joy and autonomy—even against the global conditions that often command otherwise.

Famously, in the late 1970s, for instance, Cindy Sherman was photographing herself impersonating the sultry stars of Hitchcock or Antonioni films, creating images that examined gendered stereotypes and the instability of the presentation of self.

Smartphones and imagedriven social media have proliferated this practice, creating a generation of photographers for whom hyperbolizing for the camera is another part of traveling, eating a meal, or simply existing. But a recent show on view at the Hammer Museum evidenced that acclaimed Armenian Egyptian photo­ grapher Van Leo investigated the relationship between identity, performance, and photography long before either of the aforementioned moments in the cultural or Western art historical canons.

In the exhibition, the late Cairo-based photographer’s first international survey, viewers were granted an intimate glimpse into the personal and creative life of an individual obsessed with using photography to document

Having fully internalized his beloved cinematic characters, Van Leo began performing a new, composite identity built from the many personas he saw on-screen—fully manifesting the dream machine.

In addition to the self-­ portraits and personal ephemera, Becoming Van Leo showcased some of the artist’s most significant public achievements. By his mid-­ career, he was well known for his photographs of famous Egyptian actors like Omar Sharif, Rushdy Abaza, and Samia Gamal. His photo of the actress and singer Shérihan, Shérihan. Actress.

Standing with her feet facing in opposite directions, she casts a long shadow behind her, lit from a high angle in a perfect example of Van Leo’s flair for dramatic lighting.

Where this young girl would later become a celebrated actress and pop culture icon with a chameleon-like penchant for extravagant costume changes, she appears here as understated and ambiguous. In front of Van Leo’s lens, she becomes a vessel for the photographer’s visual thesis—that identity, whether performed for the camera or not, can be something multitudinous, uncategorical, and unexpected. His embrace of this slippage was well ahead of the cinematic and cultural norms of the era.

At a time when concepts of identity and gender roles were far more rigid and pervasive, Van Leo created a photographic world in which the self could be a composite—both a cowboy and a starlet. While Van Leo lived in a progressive city, the stars of his beloved cinematic worlds were typecast, reflecting the rigid gendered and raced stereotypes that he remixed and pushed back on. He found grounding within the slippages of identity, remaking himself before the camera and performing various genders and personas. Becoming Van Leo tells more than simply the story of Levon Boyadjian’s journey to becoming the photographer Van Leo: It anticipates the way that culture has moved toward more expansive conceptions of gender, a road which Van Leo helped pave.

Trabajo de atención del aborto y fotografía ¿Cuál es la visualidad de la atención al aborto? Aunque escribo este texto para una publicación con sede en Los Angeles —la que fue mi hogar durante muchos años—, ahora vivo en Columbus, Ohio, desde hace casi una década. Al igual que muchos de sus estados vecinos del Midwest, mi estado ha estado reduciendo el acceso al aborto desde mucho antes de que yo llegara en 2014 (en ese año, Ohio tenía 29 clínicas; ahora hay 10)¹. En los años ochenta, Nilsson se sorprendió al descubrir que activistas antiabortistas utilizaban sus imágenes en carteles de protesta. Lo irónico es que, a lo largo de las décadas que llevaba fotografiando de este modo, todos sus fetos, salvo uno, eran fetos abortados o malogrados, a menudo procedentes de embarazos ectópicos (en los que un embrión crece fuera del útero, poniendo en peligro la vida de la persona embarazada)⁶. En otras palabras, las imágenes solo eran posibles porque los embarazos se habían interrumpido para salvar la vida de las mujeres⁷.

En enero, The New York Times publicó un ensayo titulado “Early Abortion Looks Nothing Like What You Have Been Told” [“El aborto precoz no se parece en nada a lo que te han contado”], escrito por los cofundadores de My Abortion Network [Red MYA], una organización dirigida por médicos. Las fotografías que lo acompañaban eran de placas de Petri sobre una regla, cada una de las cuales contenía tejido del embarazo temprano y revestimiento uterino extraído mediante procedimientos de aspiración endouterina (succión suave) durante las primeras cinco a nueve semanas de embarazo.

El Dr. Jeffrey Levine, profesor de medicina familiar y director de los programas de salud reproductiva y de género de la Robert Wood Johnson Medical School University, habló de sus experiencias con becarios, residentes y estudiantes de medicina: “Cuando examinamos el tejido después de una intervención, todos se sorprenden. Durante ese periodo, me reunía con un grupo de manifestantes proaborto todos los fines de semana en la sede del Columbus Statehouse. Dábamos vueltas a la manzana una y otra vez con nuestras pancartas en la mano; yo llevaba a mi pequeño recién nacido atado al pecho, que dormía durante todo el trayecto. Mientras caminábamos, y a veces nos encontrábamos con contramanifestantes, empecé a preguntarme: ¿cómo podríamos contrarrestar su estratagema fotográfica? ¿Qué aspecto tendría? ¿Cuáles son los efectos que solo las imágenes pueden conseguir?

Aunque empezó a cris­ talizar entonces, esta es una cuestión que he acarreado, que ha evolucionado conmigo, durante décadas. Llevo mucho tiempo interesada en el material visual que acompaña y describe la maternidad y el nacimiento, y solo estoy empezando a comprender la forma en que el acceso al aborto y la atención sanitaria son una pieza central de esa práctica —la forma en que el derecho a estar embarazada tiene todo que ver con el derecho a no estarlo—.

Al igual que el 60 % de las mujeres que abortan en este país¹¹, yo también soy madre, y ya lo era cuando aborté entre el nacimiento de mis dos hijos.

Nosotras —las que gestamos y alimentamos bebés de nuestro cuerpo y sangramos durante meses después del parto— sabe­ mos sobre todo lo que cuesta.

Quizás porque la fotografía no ha estado histórica­ mente vinculada al derecho

al aborto (más allá de la imagen del gancho de alambre), mis marcos de referencia para las experiencias del aborto en el arte eran, y siguen siendo, no foto­ gráficos en su mayoría. Vuelvo perpetuamente a pintoras como Paula Rego y Juanita McNeely, y a la poeta y escritora de ciencia ficción Marge Piercy, que describen narraciones de miedo y rabia indignada (“Una mujer no es una cesta”, comienza Piercy su poema “Right To Life” [“Derecho a la vida”])¹². En 1998, tras el fracaso de un referéndum para legalizar el aborto en Portugal, su país natal, Rego creó una serie de 10 grandes cuadros titulada Abortion Series [Serie sobre el aborto]. Las obras, cada una de las cuales representa una sola figura en una clínica de abortos clandestina —muchas de ellas en camas individuales o en improvisadas mesas de operaciones—, son oscuras, constreñidas y se sienten frías y húmedas. Una de ellas es la que más me obsesiona: una mujer musculosa con un pañuelo rojo, sentada de espaldas a la pared. Levanta las piernas, preparada, y nos sostiene la mirada. El espectador se sitúa como su abortista ilegal en una escena de confrontación que es a la vez erótica y dolorosa.

Estoy muy agradecida por estas obras, que son inquebrantables.

Como persona nacida en California en 1983, mi experiencia con los derechos reproductivos ha sido diferente a la de Rego, McNeely y Piercy.

Gracias a estas valientes artistas y a tantas mujeres en la lucha, heredé un mundo en el que, en su mayor parte, el aborto era seguro y legal. Mi propio aborto tuvo lugar en una clínica con un médico y no en un callejón con Dios sabe quién; me fui a casa unas horas después en lugar de desangrarme en el

ver un embrión, un feto o al menos algunas partes del cuerpo, [y se quedan] decepcio­ nados”⁸. Hace tanto tiempo que la fotografía se utiliza estratégicamente como herra­ mienta ideológica en la lucha contra el aborto que incluso a los médicos en formación les tomó desprevenidos el conflicto entre lo que veían en sus micros­ copios y las imágenes de fetos, embriones y/o partes del cuerpo en su entorno cultural, desde los libros de texto de secundaria y preparatoria hasta la propaganda antiaborto.

Aunque en el artículo de The New York Times solo había siete fotografías, todas ellas pequeñas y realizadas modestamente, hicieron estallar mi concepción del embarazo y su interrupción basada en imágenes, de Nilsson en adelante.

Las imágenes son poderosas en este sentido.

Los intelectuales, desde Hervé Guibert hasta Roland Barthes y John Berger, han diferenciado las fotografías de todas las demás formas de arte por su función de proporcionar una supuesta prueba representativa de la verdad y la experiencia vivida, en lugar de una inter­ pretación. “El pintor construye, el fotógrafo revela”, escribió Susan Sontag en 1977⁹. Al igual que la retroalimentación biológica, las fotografías pueden hacernos cambiar de opinión sobre nuestro cuerpo.

En 2018, mucho antes de que se filtrara la decisión Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization [caso Dobbs contra la Organización de la Salud de las Mujeres de Jackson], pero décadas después del lento y constante asalto al acceso al aborto, empecé a pensar en hacer un proyecto que se centr­ ara en la cuestión de la visualidad frente al aborto. El entonces gobernador de Ohio, John Kasich

sucio suelo de un motel. Esa perspectiva —la atención del aborto como algo seguro y normal en lugar de traumático— ha influido en el arte que quiero hacer al respecto. Y, en un sentido más amplio, creo que este es ahora nuestro imperativo político y nuestro lugar de resistencia como artistas: normalizar, en lugar de sensacio­ nalizar, la atención al aborto.

En agosto inauguré mi primera exposición individual en el Minneapolis Institute of Art, un proyecto que pretendía centrarse en el trabajo (sanitario) diario que realizan los médicos, el personal y los voluntarios que practican abortos. Mi investigación —que consistió en recopilar fotografías de archivo de las clínicas y en crear imágenes del personal traba­ jando— me permitió conocer y entablar relaciones con estas personas y sus historias feminis­ tas. En este sentido, el proyecto avanzó lentamente y con sumo cuidado. En otros aspectos, avanzó demasiado rápido: en solo tres años, el proyecto se había convertido en una carrera contra el tiempo y contra la maquinaria política de dere­ chas. La sentencia del caso Dobbs se filtró en mayo de 2022, causándome tales olas de congoja que tuve que dejar el trabajo suspendido durante algún tiempo; la sentencia se emitió unos meses más tarde, anulando oficialmente el derecho constitucional al aborto estable­ cido por Roe v. Wade en 1973 y Planned Parenthood v. Casey [caso de Planned Parenthood contra Casey] en 1992. Las clínicas con las que trabajaba en Indiana y North Dakota empezaron a cerrar en tiempo real. Una y otra vez, oí al personal de las clínicas repetir una versión de la misma frase: “Ofreceremos el último aborto seguro en ____”.

(Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, rellena el espacio en blanco). Me pareció la frase más determinada y elegíaca que podía imaginar.

Una cuestión de cuándo, no de si. Volviendo a las fotografías cotidianas que había recopilado y hecho —de todo, desde fiestas de cumpleaños del personal hasta equipo médico esterilizado—, me aferré a esta frase y acabé dando a mi exposición este título: The last safe abortion [El último aborto seguro].

Como artista que se dedica a la construcción de movimientos sociales radicales, me siento a menudo ambivalente sobre lo que el arte puede hacer. Se dice que la Abortion Series de Rego, de la que creó grabados para que las imágenes pudieran distribuirse ampliamente, ayudó a inclinar el debate nacional hacia la legalización del aborto en el país en 2007¹³. Espero desesperadamente que sea cierto. Creo que la visualidad es una herramienta que debe blandirse en la lucha por la liberación, reproductiva o de otro tipo; el movimiento contra el aborto lleva décadas demostrándolo con bastante eficacia. Y no es casualidad que la fotografía, una herra­ mienta de evidencia visual diferente de todas las demás formas de representación visual, haya sido su arma preferida.

Aunque está claro que la fotografía desempeña un papel singular en el trabajo de atención al aborto, sigo debatiéndome con el arte como solución ideológica y política a una crisis tan aguda y urgente.

A medida que he ido avanzando en mi proyecto de recopilación y realización de fotografías de trabajadoras de atención al aborto en sus puestos

de trabajo, me ha sorprendido la cantidad de imágenes de mujeres contestando al teléfono (también me llamó la atención que los teléfonos no pararan de sonar). Contestar al teléfono de la línea de ayuda: es un acto tan básico, ¿verdad? Lo más banal y lo que más vidas salva, y, en cierto modo, lo menos fotográfico. Pero, mientras estoy allí con una cámara en la mano, tampoco puedo evitar pregun­ tarme: ¿contrarrestarán eficazmente las fotografías deliberadamente no sensaciona­ listas de la atención al aborto la forma escandalosamente grotesca (y engañosa) en que las fotografías son instru­ mentalizadas por la derecha antiaborto? Y, en cualquier caso, ¿por qué estoy fotografiando a otras mujeres que contestan al teléfono, en lugar de contestar yo misma?

Me viene a la memoria la ONG Women on Waves, fundada y dirigida por la heroica y visionaria médica holandesa Rebecca Gomperts, que lleva servicios de aborto (en gran medida con píldoras) y educación a países con leyes restrictivas sobre el aborto operando en un barco al amparo del derecho marítimo internacional. Women on Waves —una operación médica y de empoderamiento feminista móvil— también existe como proyecto artístico, que utiliza el arte como una de las “múltiples estrategias para promover el mensaje de que las mujeres tienen una autonomía fundamental sobre sus propios cuerpos”¹⁴.

La organización ha participado en bienales y exposiciones internacionales, ha realizado presentaciones en cumbres de arte como la Creative Time [Tiempo Creativo] y ha iniciado una instalación de arte de guerrilla en el Vaticano. Sus

obras de arte a menudo no un lugar pertinente en esta solo hablan de su misión lucha como fuerza ideológica­ y su historia, sino que también mente convincente. Algunas variedades son explícita­ mente religiosas, como la Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), una organización espiritual ecuménica con varias sedes en Hollywood y Pacific Palisades que enseña Kriya Yoga⁴, mientras que otras son eruditas, como la Philosophical Research Society (PRS) de Los Feliz, que alberga una notable biblioteca de textos esotéricos y espirituales⁵.

Pero la mayor parte de esta herencia espiritual —desde estudios de yoga boutique a tiendas de cristales energéticos, boticas ocultistas o estudios de manifestadores— es más banal, parte integrante del tejido comercial del sur de California.

En muchos casos, estos merca­ dos han comercializado los aspectos más matizados del espiritualismo californiano.

Estas imbricaciones de lo místico con el capital han suscitado no pocas críticas.

En particular, las adaptaciones occidentales de las religiones orientales y el ocultismo a menudo hacen demasiado hincapié en la identidad indivi­ dual y la libertad personal en detrimento de las luchas estructurales basadas en la raza, la etnia y la clase. Uno de estos grupos ha sido recientemente objeto de la exposición itinerante Another World: The Transcendental Painting Group, 1938–1945 [Otro mundo: El Grupo de Pintura Trascendental, 1938-1945] exhibida este verano en el Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). En 1938, en Taos y Santa Fe, New Mexico, esta cohorte de artistas se alió en su deseo común de rechazar las tendencias estéticas y los mercados del arte de New York y Europa para acceder a su visión de lo espiritual a través del arte. Los artistas participantes —entre los que se encontraban Emil Bisttram, Raymond Jonson, Robert Gribbroek, Lawren Harris y Agnes Pelton (miembro del Transcendental Painting Group [TPG] in absentia, ya que pasó su madurez artística viviendo en el desierto cerca de Palm Springs⁶)— tenían distintos grados de compromiso con alguna religión, pero compartían una desconfianza hacia la modernidad, un interés por lo oculto y una devoción por representar aquello que se encuentra “más allá de la apariencia del mundo físico.... [en los] reinos imaginativos que son idealistas y espirituales”⁷.

Para los artistas del TPG, el esfuerzo por acceder a lo

divino excluyendo el gran mundo social exigía un rechazo de las economías artísticas que florecían en las capitales mundiales.

Gracias a su aislamiento geográfico de los centros culturales urbanos, los artistas del TPG pudieron desvincularse mejor de las convenciones visuales y políticas que confor­ maban el mundo del arte comercial de la época, sobre todo el realismo social y la proto escuela neoyorquina de arte abstracto⁸. Agnes Pelton aban­ donó New York incluso cuando su carrera estaba en ciernes en la región⁹, mientras que Jonson rechazó la invitación de Josef Albers para unirse a la alianza de American Abstract Artists [Artistas Abstractos Americanos] en 1937¹⁰. Es cierto que el grupo siguió exponiendo en institu­ciones de todo Estados Unidos —por ejemplo, en el Museum of Non-Objective

Painting (ahora conocido como Museo Guggenheim) en 1940¹¹—, pero su firme aislamiento del mercado dominante y de sus criterios de venta les permitió adoptar un enfoque excéntrico y a menudo polarizador de la pintura. Por ejemplo, la presencia repetida del huevo, símbolo teosófico de la generación, sirve de base a muchas de sus composiciones sumamente geométricas, evidentes en muchas de las obras expuestas en el LACMA. En el nocturno de Bisttram Oversoul [Superalma] (c. 1941) se superponen orbes ovoides sobre un fondo azul con estrellas blancas, salpicadas como un cielo nocturno. contextualizado por una atmós­ fera más sentimental —en lugar de puntillosamente geométrica— con palomas, suaves trozos de nieve y pétalos de flores arremolinados.

Del mismo modo que los artistas del TPG se desvincu­ laron de los circuitos artísticos contemporáneos para mediar entre el mundo físico y lo que se encuentra más allá de la conciencia, el pintor Alan Lynch repudió el mercado del arte en busca de una práctica artística más aislada junto a su estudio de budismo Zen Sōtō. Lynch se relacionó con los artistas de la vanguardia californiana de mediados de siglo, muchos de ellos animados por la investi­ gación del subconsciente, la evolución de la abstracción y las nuevas formas populares de cultura visual, como los cómics y los anuncios publicita­ rios. En este clima, Lynch expuso públicamente durante un breve periodo de 10 años, tras el cual su práctica artística se volvió más privada, meditativa y espiritual. La obra de Lynch constituyó la pieza central de The Disappearance of Rituals [La desaparición de los rituales], una exposición colectiva en el Château Shatto este verano que supuso la primera muestra pública de la obra del artista desde que abandonó el mundo del arte comercial en 1969¹².

La exposición se centró en una serie de acuarelas proteicas nunca antes vistas, realizadas mientras Lynch cursaba estudios para ordenarse como monje. Las obras son en sí mismas meditativas por su pequeña escala y composi­ ciones similares, como si el ritmo ritualista del estudio zen se encarnara a través de su obra artística. Al igual que las obras de los artistas del TPG, las pinturas enmarcadas de Lynch

están desvinculadas socialmente y a menudo contienen formas curvas que a veces parecen biomórficas, a veces geológicas.

Untitled [Sin título] (1978) muestra seis tentáculos curvos que provienen de la esquina inferior derecha como algas. Un halo arenoso irradia desde detrás o entre ellos, desvaneciéndose en una delgada capa opales­ cente que se funde en azul profundo en los bordes de la obra. Cuatro acuarelas similares de la misma escala colgaban a la derecha, reiterando el enfoque de Lynch de pintar formas simples y abstractas.

En este caso, Lynch respondía a las tensiones anidadas dentro de la mitología californiana —la búsqueda de la libertad espiritual que, paradójicamente, depende de las trampas materiales del capital y el colonialismo— innovando en la abstracción espiritual, como hicieron los artistas del TPG. Para los artistas que han trabajado a lo largo del siglo XX, desde Pelton hasta Lynch, el impulso espiritual de su práctica ha sido, en última instancia, la base de su alejamiento de muchos de las trampas de la vida urbana moderna y del mundo comercial del arte. Pero incluso cuando su obra se integra en las historias más dominantes del arte contemporáneo, e incluso cuando lo espiritual­kitsch es una categoría comercial cada vez más presente, los artistas que trabajan hoy en día y que hablan sin reparos de sus espiritualidades alternativas pueden tener dificultades para encontrar un público que los acoja. Lynch y los artistas del TPG respondieron a la fricción entre los mercados comerciales del arte y sus prácticas artístico­espirituales abandonando sus carreras. Sin embargo, para otros, como la artista británica

afincada en Los Angeles Penny Slinger, la decisión fue tomada por ellos. En una entrevista a Carla de 2017 con Eliza Swann, Slinger comentaba lo difícil que le ha resultado exponer obras que creó después de los años setenta, cargadas de referencias al Tantra y a lo divino femenino, indicando que su uso de la palabra “Diosa” ahuyentaba a los coleccionistas¹³. La obra espiritual de Slinger, feminista declarada cuya obra decons­ truye la estética del patriarcado, invita —en lugar de excluir— al mundo social y político en general. Mientras que el arte espiritual minimalista más aceptable, en la línea de Lynch y los artistas del TPG, se integra cada vez más en la corriente institucional y comercial dominante, la obra de confrontación como la de Slinger puede seguir siendo recibida con escepticismo.

Hay un escapismo latente que acecha en el reciente y renovado interés por la espiri­ tualidad en el arte, lo que favorece un refugio comerciali­ zable en la experiencia espiritual indivi­dual en lugar de compro­ meterse con la engorrosa problemática del mundo material.

Mientras tanto, las exigencias de la vida contemporánea restringen cada vez más la libertad de la mayoría de los artistas para proclamar un rechazo total a la economía del arte. Muchos artistas que viven o exponen en Los Angeles y se enfrentan a esta maraña de asuntos utilizan su obra espiritual como vehículo para criticar la economía del capital sin dejar de operar en el mercado de las galerías comerciales.

Las pinturas históricas del artista afincado en Los Angeles Umar Rashid (también conocido como Frohawk Two Feathers) son casi como palimpsestos,

yuxtaponiendo diversas geografías, temporalidades y sistemas de creencias espiri­ tuales en sus relatos sobre el imperio, especialmente en los primeros años de los Estados Unidos. Con imágenes asociadas a las creencias religiosas y cosmológicas de sus temas, sus pinturas critican la instru­ mentalización colonial inglesa de la religión organizada, al tiempo que celebran las espiritualidades minoritarias¹⁴.

Asimismo, Moffat Takadiwa, autodenominado jocosamente “basurero espiritual”¹⁵, en su exposición de 2021-22 en Craft Contemporary, Witch Craft: Rethinking Power [Hechicería: Repensar el poder], utilizó los propios materiales del imperio contemporáneo —residuos posconsumo como tubos de pasta de dientes, tapones de botellas y bridas de plástico— para crear esculturas caleidoscópicas que pueblan las paredes de la galería con colecciones de desechos de tiraderos de basura a la vista.

Estos artistas no practican el arte contra el arte ni instru­ mentalizan su obra para rebelarse contra el mundo del arte, sino que adoptan una postura más ambivalente ante lo espiritual y el capital que puede operar de forma encu­ bierta dentro de un mercado contemporáneo al tiempo que critica sus estructuras.

Desde los remolones del mundo del arte como los artistas de TPG y Lynch hasta Slinger, a veces demasiado radical para exponer, conciliar el mercado del arte junto con espirituali­ dades poco convencionales puede parecer un juego de suma cero. Pero quizá el abismo entre las creencias heterodoxas

y el mercado del arte se esté cerrando. El escritor y curador Mark Pilkington afirma que “hemos entrado en una nueva era”¹⁶ en la que los sentimientos priman sobre los hechos, y los objetivos de optimizar la mente, el cuerpo y el espíritu ocultan las realidades materiales, a menudo duras, del mundo exterior. El crítico J. J. Charlesworth advierte que el emergente “nuevo pensamiento mágico” en el arte no solo está en alza, sino que opera una “proyección de realización ilusoria sobre una realidad de la que preferiríamos abstraernos”¹⁷.

En la obra de Rashid y Takadiwa, la espiritualidad forma parte de una crítica más amplia del capital y el colonialismo: el mundo exterior, en otras palabras, se convierte en parte del proyecto. En lugar de sintonizar y desconectar, quizá veamos más sintonizar y dejarse caer en el sistema, compro­ metiéndose de una forma crítica tanto con un más allá místico como con los asuntos más tangibles que dan forma a nuestras realidades vividas.

Habitar lo intermedio

Los mundos permeables de Silke Otto-Knapp Cuando murió de cáncer de ovario en octubre de 2022, una enfermedad brutal contra la que luchó durante dos años en medio del reinado igualmente brutal de la pandemia, la artista Silke Otto-Knapp, nacida en Alemania y afincada en Los Angeles, llevaba 18 meses trabajando en una exposición individual para la Galerie Buchholz de New York. inauguró apenas 19 días después de su fallecimiento. La exposición, titulada Versammlung, palabra alemana que significa “asam­ blea”, presentaba tres grandes trípticos en escala de grises realizados únicamente con acuarela negra —Otto-Knapp había adaptado este medio (normalmente reservado para el papel) como pigmento para el lienzo¹—. Estas pinturas independientes con bisagras adoptaron una huella escultórica, ocupando la pequeña galería como acordeones plegados sin apretar —una especie de reunión que situaba la obra en una proximidad física dinámica con el espectador, derribando la distinción entre pintura, escultura y escenografía—. Inspirándose en las prácticas de danza y teatro experimentales de principios y mediados del siglo XX (como la coreografía de la Bauhaus y la obra de Bertolt Brecht), y a menudo haciendo referencia directa a ellas, las composiciones representan los cuerpos de los intérpretes como siluetas sin rostro que se deslizan a través de umbrales y se transforman en otras formas discretas².

En Untitled (Versammlung) III [Sin título (Versammlung) III] (2022), por ejemplo, una imagen especular monocromática de cuerpos abrazados o quizá fusionados —uno negro y otro blanco, que sugieren un negativo fotográfico y un positivo— enmarca una esfera lunar tenue; en otra, la figura de una bailarina de cintas se funde en una espiral serpenteante.

Aunque pintados casi al final de su vida, los evocadores cuadros (Untitled) Versammlung [(Sin título) Versammlung] aluden al intermedio pictórico, marcado por umbrales borrosos y una serie de formas esquivas, que había sido una fuente constante de indagación en la obra de

Otto-Knapp. Este verano, Regen Projects presentó una exposición individual póstuma de obras realizadas predominantemente en los últimos cinco años de la vida de la artista, iluminando aún más el repertorio de motivos inefables que habitan en sus pinturas. Bajo la curaduría de Kitty Scott, la meditativa presentación de acuarelas y obras sobre papel no incluía obras de la serie (Untitled) Versammlung ni ningún otro cuadro independiente, una curiosa omisión. No obstante, las obras seleccionadas reflejaban la profundidad y complejidad del lenguaje gestual que Otto-Knapp había ido forjando meticulosamente a lo largo de su vida, a pesar de trabajar con una técnica que a menudo se consideraba demasiado ilustrativo para los objetivos más sofisticados de la pintura³.

Al igual que las pinturas de Versammlung, las últimas obras expuestas en Regen Projects revelan la inclinación de Otto-Knapp por indagar en motivos liminales (y subliminales) —desde nubes a siluetas, pasando por el propio espacio negativo— y su capacidad para extraer complejidad conceptual incluso de las formas más simplistas. Mientras que sus obras anteriores a menudo incorporaban difusos brillos de color, aquí, su singular atención a las imágenes en blanco y negro convierte sus cuadros en fructíferos vehículos para la interpretación alegórica. La dicotomía tonal puede sugerir la rigidez de los absolutos binarios (blanco o negro) o, lo que es más intri­ gante, la fluidez entre formas opuestas pero intrínsecamente interconectadas (luz y oscuridad, día y noche, positivo y negativo).

Sin embargo, para cualquier

lectura de la obra de Otto-Knapp es crucial el espectro de espacios grises que existen entre ambos.

Aunque podemos referirnos a estas “zonas grises” como espacios de liminalidad —un término comodín para la indeter­ minación difusa de los estados de transición—, en el caso de las pinturas de Otto-Knapp, estos espacios mutables actúan como umbrales conectivos entre formas, ideas o cosas discretas —una noción que la propia artista resumió como “encuentro de espacios negativos y positivos”⁴—. “Encuentro” es la palabra clave: señalando momentos de contacto o conver­ gencia, el vocabulario intermedio de Otto-Knapp huye de la pasividad y funciona como un modo háptico y dinámico de expresión gestual, anclando sus investigaciones conceptuales y materiales. En última instancia, en lugar de habitar un mundo de absolutos, sus pinturas plantean que el espacio latente entre los objetos puede ser tan maduro y fértil como las cosas mismas.

Etimológicamente, el término “liminal” procede de la palabra latina “līmen”,

que significa umbral o puerta; la palabra “limen” también se utiliza para referirse al umbral fisiológico en el que una sensación, como el dolor o la conciencia, es detectable.

Anatómicamente, un limen es la apertura de un orificio corporal: el umbral entre nuestro mundo interior y el exterior. Si conceptualmente la liminalidad describe una condición general de suspensión, físicamente un limen es un punto de tran­ sición más agudo (aunque todavía elusivo) entre formas o estados discretos del ser.

La obra de Otto-Knapp aborda las complejidades de ambos significados de la palabra: aunque no retrata umbrales en forma de cavidades corporales, sí representa una variedad de otros limines físicos y metafísicos en su iluminación de espacios de transición, como las costuras donde se conjuntan lienzos o composiciones.

El proceso material de Otto-Knapp aprovechaba de forma similar elementos de transición. Colocaba meticulosa­ mente en sus lienzos capas de pigmento de acuarela negro azabache, que limpiaba y lavaba

para revelar una niebla de tonos grises: una coreografía gestual que se deleita en el espacio latente entre la marca de rayas y el borrado. A continuación, manipulaba físicamente el lienzo para propulsar el pigmento flotante por la superficie de la obra, intentando controlar cómo se encharcaba y empa­ paba en la piel del lienzo.

Aunque el acto de pintar implica intrínsecamente al cuerpo, la relación entre el cuerpo de un artista y su lienzo —sustentada en la física y las contingencias del tacto cercano y cuidadoso— es singularmente íntima. El proceso de Otto-Knapp consistía en aprovechar la flexibilidad fugitiva de su medio, dirigiendo el movimiento del pigmento a medida que pasaba rápida­ mente de líquido a materia seca y, de este modo, elevando la importancia de los estados materiales transitorios. Las superficies resultantes tienen los gestos translúcidos de la acuarela, pero al mismo tiempo imitan las texturas terrosas y moteadas del carbón o el grafito, un juego de manos visual que sitúa la obra entre los márgenes de varios medios.

Aquí, actuaba como una alqui­ mista, transportando su pintura de un estado a otro y deleitán­ dose en el espacio anticipatorio que existe en los umbrales de la transformación.

Los temas de las composi­ ciones de Otto-Knapp —cuerpos espectrales y siluetas nebulosas que deambulan por vacíos diluidos— a menudo se infiltran en los límites físicos de las propias obras. En dos pequeñas obras monocromáticas sobre papel con composiciones casi idénticas (instaladas una al lado de la otra en Regen Projects), una figura sin rostro yace de lado, apoyada en el codo como si leyera tranquilamente un libro.

En cada obra, un marco ligera­ mente pintado rodea a la figura, cuyo brazo se extiende hacia la esquina inferior derecha del papel, tal vez aferrándose a algo invisible. En la primera obra, más grande (Untitled [Sin título], aprox. 2021), el brazo extendido de la figura toca el marco pintado, como recono­ ciendo su contención. En la segunda (también Untitled [Sin título], aprox. 2021), la mano de la figura roza el borde del papel, como si intentara percibir el mundo que hay más allá.

Aunque humildes en compara­ ción con las pinturas más grandes y complejas de la exposición —casi rocé estas obras en mi primera visita a la muestra—, su tranquila interrelación insinúa los matices inherentes al definido interés de Otto-Knapp por los umbrales.

El sutil cambio de la figura de una obra a la siguiente sugiere una transformación invisible que da lugar a la silenciosa ruptura de un límite. La pausa espacial y temporal entre estas dos composiciones funciona como un momento de acción inferida, como el breve interludio que se produce cuando un bailarín pasa de un movimiento a otro. El emparejamiento de estas dos obras activa el espacio marginal en blanco que las separa, señalando el marco como un sistema imperfecto de contención, y sugiriendo que incluso las fronteras claramente visibles son más porosas de lo que pensamos.

Además de sus obras figurativas, Otto-Knapp invo­ caba con frecuencia la poética visual del mundo natural, innata­ mente plagado de umbrales resbaladizos. Una nube, por ejemplo, es una forma liminal perfecta: una boya nebulosa entre la tierra y el cielo, que habita un reino de suspensión

perpetua, como en la pintura a gran escala de Otto-Knapp Clouds [Nubes] (2021), que ocupaba la pared central de Regen Projects. Como respuesta a la obra de Georgia O'Keefe Sky Above Clouds IV [Cielo sobre nubes IV] (1965), que representa un cuadro de nubes abstractas y celulares vistas desde la ventanilla de un avión, el cuadro de Otto-Knapp adopta una perspectiva abovedada similar, como si tanto la artista como el espectador estuvieran suspen­ didos en el cielo. Compuesta por cinco lienzos fusionados para formar un polígono irregular, la acuarela en escala de grises representa nubes como almoha­ dones en tonos ceniza, hueso y carbón. Estas formas limpias e hinchadas amenazan con romper los bordes del cuadro, sugiriendo una vez más la falibilidad del lienzo como margen concreto.

Mientras que la pintura de O'Keefe connota la tranquilidad espiritual de los horizontes en calma, la obra de Otto-Knapp aparece oscura y dinámica, como en la cúspide del trueno.

Su presencia es seductora y formidable: cuando la vi por primera vez, sentí una extraña mezcla de asombro, placer, reverencia y curiosidad, como si anticipara una tormenta (y eso antes de saber que Clouds fue una de las últimas obras que creó antes de morir). Aunque imponer la biografía a una obra puede enturbiar su contemplación, es difícil no ver este cuadro a través de la lente del luto.

Un cielo ondulante al borde de un chubasco puede denotar el peso emocional de la pena o la melancolía; quizá también pueda leerse como una metáfora del tumulto que acompaña al proceso de creación. Y, aunque el compromiso conceptual de Otto-Knapp con las formas

Entrevista con Devon Tsuno En el Day of Remembrance [Día de la Rememoración] de 2022, el 80º aniversario de la firma de la Orden Ejecutiva 9066, que autorizó el traslado forzoso y la evacuación de los japoneses­americanos en la costa oeste, Devon Tsuno compartió una publicación de Instagram en la que detallaba la historia detrás de sixteen cents each and a stage for plunder [dieciséis centavos cada uno y un escenario para el expolio] (2022), un proyecto que había sido encargado por los Descanso Gardens para la celebración anual de su afamada colección de camelias¹.

de liminalidad es muy anterior a su diagnóstico (que no define en absoluto el contexto de su obra), hay cierta solemnidad poética en la idea de que trabajara sobre este paisaje cambiante mientras ella misma se acercaba a un umbral existencial.

Decididamente evoca­ dores de lo intermedio, los cuerpos sin rostro, las siluetas que se funden y las ominosas nubes de Otto-Knapp pueden interpretarse en última instancia como centinelas del subcons­ ciente de la artista: un conjunto de gestos que residen en el punto de encuentro, un umbral especialmente palpable, fértil y activo entre la ideación sublimi­ nal y la creación artística. Ya sea físicamente, a través del proceso y la forma, o conceptualmente, su obra establece umbrales liminales no solo como espacios por los que navegar, sino también como reuniones palpables repletas de tensión material.

Tsuno, artista conocido por pintar flora autóctona y no autóctona como representa­ ciones de sucedáneos visuales de cuestiones incómodas relacionadas con la historia de Los Angeles, creó una propuesta para Descanso Gardens que se basaba tanto en la investigación de Cheng como en la poesía de Amy Uyematsu, nieta de los propietarios originales de Star Nursery, cuya obra ha sido fundamental en el movimiento asiático-americano. Uyematsu y otros poetas estadounidenses de origen japonés habían planeado una lectura al aire libre en Descanso en febrero de 2022.

Inspirado por el poema de Uyematsu sobre la camelia roja, Tsuno propuso una pintura que se digitalizaría y se convertiría en un revestimiento de vinilo adhesivo para el escenario al aire libre. Finalmente pudo producir ambas piezas, aunque el proceso de creación, circulación y existencia continuada de las obras sigue siendo problemático.

A principios de este año, Uyematsu falleció tras una larga batalla contra el cáncer. Esta pérdida para nuestra comunidad, así como el incierto estado del proyecto de Tsuno, motivaron mi conversación con él. Él y yo somos yonsei, es decir, japoneses­-americanos de cuarta generación, así como angelinos de cuarta generación también.

Llevamos años manteniendo un diálogo sobre la manera de navegar por nuestras vidas como trabajadores del arte, basado en historias compartidas de organización y solidaridad asiático-americana. Como ocurre con gran parte de la obra

de Tsuno, esta conversación pretende continuar el diálogo en torno a encontrar nuevas formas de preservación cultural y solidaridad, al aire libre, juntos.

Ana Iwataki: ¿Cómo se produjo el primer contacto de Descanso Gardens para proponeros trabajar juntos?

Devon Tsuno: Me dijeron que esperaban que yo realizara algún tipo de proyecto artístico para su celebración anual de las camelias porque estaban familiarizados con el trabajo que había realizado pintando [las] flores y plantas de Los Angeles.

[Inicialmente] critiqué la descripción [de Descanso] de cómo habían surgido. Sentí que la narrativa [tal y como la estaban contando] era ine­­ xacta desde mi conocimiento al respecto y que posicionaba a la institución como salvador blanco de esta colección [de camelias]. No quería perpetuar ese relato.

AI: ¿Cómo respondieron?

DT: Parecían sorprendidos de que yo fuera tan crítico. Pero dijeron que la institución estaba trabajando con Wendy Cheng para tomar medidas para corregir ese relato.

No parecían haber conside­rado un presupuesto y no habían completado [el] proceso de reescribir [su] narra­ tiva. Les dije que no llevaría a cabo el proyecto hasta que todo eso estuviera terminado.

[También les pregunté] si la familia conocía mi trabajo y si les gustaba la idea de que yo hiciera algo.

AI: ¿Qué crees que Descanso esperaba que un artista pudiera hacer que ellos mismos no pudieran?

DT: [Me dio la sensación de que buscaban] artistas que [celebraran] la belleza de la narrativa que están presentando.

También es una forma de mostrar, de cara al público, que están trabajando con comunidades de color, especialmente para corregir los errores que la institución ha cometido a lo largo de su existencia.

AI: A menudo parece que las instituciones culturales ven la colaboración con artistas como un atajo para implicar a toda su red comunitaria existente.

DT: Construir una relación real es un proceso largo. Como trabajo en el ámbito de la educación, lo comprendo. En realidad, la educación es una forma produc­ tiva de llegar a la comunidad.

Pero [cuando] la educación no es el objetivo principal de la institución, estoy de acuerdo en que a menudo utilizan [a los artistas] como atajos.

AI: ¿Qué sucedió para que aceptara el proyecto?

DT: Había pasado [algún tiempo] y, para mi sorpresa, [Descanso] me envió un correo electrónico en el que me informaban que habían hablado con la familia, y que esta estaría encantada de que hiciera un proyecto.

Habían conseguido establecer un presupuesto para el proyecto y habían terminado el trabajo que estaban haciendo con Wendy Cheng para corregir los contenidos de su página web.

Así que acepté y comenzamos la conversación sobre en qué consistiría el proyecto.

Quería encontrar una forma de amplificar la poesía de Amy Uyematsu. El cuadro que pinté es una abstracción de esas camelias rojas, una de las raras razas que propagó su abuelo. El rojo puede ser un

color ambiguo: puede ser bello, pero también violento, muy intenso... pero también muy tranquilizador. Intenté plasmarlo en el color y en las capas de acrílico y pintura en aerosol.

Pensé que sería una hermosa forma de participar y de dirigir la atención hacia Amy, ya que se trata de la historia de su familia. Pedí a Descanso que comprara el cuadro para su colección permanente y lo exhibiera al público. [Quería que ellos] honraran a la familia y que la narrativa se viera en la didáctica de ese cuadro.

Las personas deberían tomar conciencia [de esa historia] cuando visiten Descanso.

Lo titulé sixteen cents each and a stage for plunder (2022), que es la cantidad que [Boddy] pagó por planta a la familia de Amy⁵. La palabra “expolio” viene de cómo Wendy Cheng ha escrito sobre Descanso Gardens y la camelia. De nuevo, pensé que era importante ampliar y ser fiel al lenguaje de otras personas que ya habían estado haciendo el trabajo. Esta era realmente la única forma en que sería apropiado para mí hacer una pieza. No podía ser algo temporal para celebrar la floración anual de una flor.

AI: Una de las cosas que Wendy menciona es cómo centrarse en algo como las camelias aborda estos sistemas más amplios a través de algo específico. Observar una camelia y cómo llegó a los jardines ayuda a desentrañar algo que es un gran enredo. Al pedirte que hicieras un proyecto sobre la celebración anual de la camelia, en realidad te estaban pidiendo que abordaras la razón de ser misma por la que los Descanso Gardens existen.

Parece una petición difícil porque la historia va mucho más allá de la celebración anual.

DT: Sin duda. Probablemente fui ingenuo, pero sentí que era el momento de correr el riesgo aunque sabía que habría muchos obstáculos.

Después de terminar la pintura, me dijeron que no creían que pudieran permitirse costear el cubrirlo con vinilo y me pregun­ taron si podían utilizar la [obra de arte digital] y convertirla en pancartas. Yo les dije: “Esto no es decoración para vuestro festival. Esto es una obra de arte y un proceso que fue intencionado, y se creó con el beneplácito de la familia”. Estaba a punto de rendirme, pero no dejaba de recordar que no era para mí. En realidad era para honrar a Amy y a su familia.

AI: Exacto. No querías dejarlos solos en esta lucha mientras Descanso intentaba entender su responsabilidad con la comunidad japonesa-americana.

DT: Básicamente me dijeron que no podían hacerlo debido al presupuesto. Y aunque estu­ viera frustrado, decidí renunciar a ese aspecto del proyecto.

Al final lo conseguí porque uno de los fabricantes, el Wilson Cetina Group, se puso en contacto conmigo y me dijo que les interesaba tanto el proyecto que lo harían dentro de las limitaciones presupuestarias.

Yo estaba muy en contra de que la institución aceptara eso, [pero] Eder [Cetina] de Wilson Cetina me convenció, porque [había] oído hablar del contexto de la pieza.

Y entonces me enteré del evento de celebración de las camelias con la lectura de poesía a través de un anuncio en Instagram que apareció en mi feed el día del evento. No me habían invitado. No había ninguna mención a mi obra ni en su página web, ni en las redes sociales, ni en el acto.

Por eso el Day of Remembrance, el aniversario del E0966, publiqué un post en Instagram para contar yo mismo la historia [de] por qué hice la obra y lo que le había ocurrido a la familia de Amy, y por qué era importante que la gente lo supiera. Hubo una gran respuesta no solo por parte de la comunidad artística y de la comunidad japonesa­americana, sino también de la gente que simplemente quería ver [la obra, pero ya había sido retirada].

AI: Es todo un reto porque se pide a los artistas que aporten perspectivas diferentes. Pero cuando se les presenta lo que eso significa, a menudo no es lo que las instituciones realmente desean.

DT: Envío periódicamente correos electrónicos [a Descanso] para preguntar si el cuadro ya está expuesto.

Siempre responden con un correo muy amable diciendo que están planeando exponerlo en la remodelada Boddy House, en una sala dedicada a la historia de las camelias.

AI: Descanso Gardens no reconoció a Francis Uyematsu durante mucho tiempo. Él creó razas de camelias y Boddy se atribuyó el mérito. Y hacer lo mismo con otro japonés­americano, en un esfuerzo por reparar toda esta historia, demuestra una falta de compren­sión de los problemas subyacentes.

DT: Para mí, una de las grandes lecciones aprendidas es que nunca intenté reparar el problema. Intentaba atacar el problema.

Creo que hemos llegado a un punto, especialmente en Los Angeles, en el que ya no podemos sobrevivir por nosotros mismos como grupo cultural.

Creo que nuestra generación está empezando a comprender que nuestra supervivencia también depende de que otras personas sobrevivan.

El escaso privilegio que tenemos como japoneses-­ americanos, al haber sobrevivido nuestros padres y abuelos para que pudiéramos llegar hasta aquí, nos hace sentir muy obliga­ dos a utilizar ese privilegio y a cederlo a otras personas.

La única forma de aprender a hacerlo de manera eficaz es comprender cómo nos lo arrebataron: cómo funciona el expolio, cómo moldeó nuestra historia. Ese es el camino que he seguido. Y no es un camino que cualquier artista pueda recorrer limitándose a hacer arte. Creo que hay que trabajar en la vida cotidiana como artista, pero también como ser humano.

Ese [trabajo] tiene que ser necesa­rio, aunque el capitalismo nos diga que ganando dinero y siendo un estadounidense de clase media es como se sobrevive, lo que en realidad no es cierto.

AI: ¿Cómo le ha ayudado su historia familiar a reflexionar sobre estas cuestiones?

DT: Mi familia lleva aquí desde 1910 aproximadamente. [Pero] como gran parte de mi historia cultural ha sido borrada del conocimiento común, ha sido un proceso de ir quitando capas, retrocediendo en el tiempo para conocer mi propia historia y el papel de mi familia en el

desarrollo de lo que hoy es el sur de California… Diferentes personas de mi familia han luchado por la igualdad y la justicia social durante esas cuatro generaciones a través de su trabajo, de la educación y de las artes. Tardé 40 años en comprender realmente que eso era lo que estaba haciendo.

Sé que hay enormes lagunas. Tengo que buscar esas cosas. Y la historia oral es el modo en que se transmite.

Lo he aprendido de otros artistas, como Alan Nakagawa y otros de la generación anterior a la mía.

Ha sido un proceso agradable, aunque haya momentos de frustración, como este proyecto.

No me arrepiento de haber hecho nada de esto. Una vez me dijiste que la lucha tiene que ser a la vista de todo el mundo. Se me ha quedado grabado.

AI: Creo que compartimos la preocupación por cómo funciona la cultura en el paisaje del que hablas, en el desarrollo del sur de California como un lugar en el que estamos comprometidos, pero también donde intentos similares de facilitar la justicia racial se han manejado realmente mal. Es muy difícil saber cómo navegar por ello.

DT: Creo que es muy fácil rendirse. A veces quiero rendirme y dejar de hacer obras, pero también sé que esto es lo que mejor se me da. Y aunque cometa errores y fracase, es algo que tengo que seguir haciendo.

Todos intentamos sobrevivir en un sistema capitalista, y los artistas también tienen que hacerlo. Para mí, dejar de ser artista, dejar de hacer obras o dejar de exponerlas es rendirse.

Ella dice que este punto de privilegiado agrega un cierto poder al espacio, ayudándola a aprovechar la energía femenina. Las brillantes conchas de cauríes también aparecen en el video y a lo largo de la instalación como objetos que resisten todo tipo de condiciones meteorológicas, representando poderosas formas de resistencia contra la opresión. Histórica­ mente, las conchas de cauríes se han valorado como moneda de cambio en distintas culturas y desempeñaron un papel importante en el comercio transatlántico de esclavos².

Los arqueólogos también han descubierto que las conchas de cauríes —muy abundantes en África occidental y central occidental— eran de los pocos objetos que los esclavos podían llevar consigo a través del Atlántico³. A lo largo de la exposición, las conchas de cauríes aparecían dispuestas de diversas formas —tapizaban las lonas de polietileno, se entrelazaban en los bucles que colgaban del techo y decora­ ban las molduras de las casas chattel que se hundían—.

En el video de Whittle, adoptan la forma de adornos corporales.

En la actualidad, las cauríes son símbolos de prosperidad y protección y se asocian a los espíritus del agua, un motivo que Whittle repite en toda la exposición.

Urs Fischer en Gagosian 20 de julio– 4 de noviembre de 2023 La última vez que vi la obra de Urs Fischer fue a mediados de 2019. Se trataba de PLAY (2018), una pieza de escultura, danza y animación en la que nueve sillas de oficina se movían por las galerías de Jeffrey Deitch. La fiesta de baile robótica contaba con la ayuda de una red de cámaras que procesaban y predecían cómo los asistentes a la galería se relacionaban con el mobiliario y de la coreó­ grafa Madeline Hollander, que introdujo la sensación humana del azar en los movimientos de las sillas computerizadas¹.

Pero el aspecto más curioso de PLAY es que las sillas estaban programadas para aprender continuamente de sus movimien­ tos e interacciones con el público: estaban aprendiendo a jugar, perfeccionando sus actuaciones sobre la marcha.

La inteligencia artificial estaba dando un giro brusco a la teoría de la interpretación².

Por supuesto, me enganché.

No puedo anticipar el mismo entusiasmo sobre Denominator [Denominador] (2020–22), la más reciente incursión de Fischer en Los Angeles presentada con Gagosian. En lugar de sillas, Fischer ha centrado su teatro algorítmico en anuncios de televisión, imágenes basadas en historias que promocionan productos que creemos necesitar.

Instalado en el interior de un antiguo banco Wells Fargo en North Camden Drive, Beverly Hills (sede temporal de exposiciones de Gagosian),

Denominator es un montaje interminable de anuncios entresacados de las redes sociales y la televisión que se remontan a la década de 1950, cuando los televisores en color llegaron por primera vez a los hogares estadounidenses³.

Fischer y su equipo buscaron en YouTube (donde se puede acceder a muchos anuncios) y TikTok, y archivaron inicial­ mente 70 000 anuncios de todo el mundo. El artista sometió estos anuncios a algoritmos de aprendizaje automático (por ejemplo, modelos entrenados en CLIP), que utilizaron código personalizado para recortar y clasificar los anuncios por contenido, color y composición⁴.

Presentada como un diluvio de imágenes deconstruidas, la sensibilidad chambona de Denominator se desvía de la publicidad producida en masa en cuanto a que no hay un público claro en mente. ¿Qué es lo que se vende entonces? Nada nuevo más allá de lo que ya existe en el éter.

Esta es en parte la razón por la que mi entusiasmo por Denominator vacila en relación con PLAY. Mientras que esta última obra evocaba una extraña sorpresa, si elimino la

magistral, aunque tópica, narración de los anuncios de televisión, lo que Denominator regurgita son semblanzas de spam de imágenes que, en última instancia, generan el mismo impulso consumista⁵.

En cuanto a su forma, Denominator cautiva: la pieza es un colosal cubo de monitor de video de 12 pies que repro­ duce su metraje vertiginoso en todas sus superficies visibles.

Los anuncios aparecen en fragmentos incompletos, completamente despojados de su contexto comercial original.

En una secuencia, un lindo gato se agacha ante un tazón cerca de otro clip de un jugador de tenis con una camisa blanca, su espalda alejándose de la cámara en un eco del felino agachado.

Otros anuncios de gatos, como el comercial “Mjau Mjau Mjau Flygresor.se”, rodean inexplicable­mente al jugador de tenis. Lo que obtienes es un montaje de anuncios visualmente cautivador que “te absorbe físicamente”, de tal manera que “nuestros ojos son casi constante­ mente atraídos por la pantalla”⁶.

Sin embargo, lo cautivador se convierte en lindo, caótico y luego visiblemente confuso.

Por el contrario, el teórico cultural Stuart Hall escribe que nuestra “forma de ver” la cultura mediatizada debe implicar “mirar detenida y directamente” la “exuberante publicidad”¹³.

Fischer no hace posible este tipo de mirada, ya que sus algoritmos priorizan la dimensión estética sobre la social. Es decir, la sobrecarga pictórica de Denominator está estilizada, inscrita en una lógica publicitaria prexistente que se empeña en bombardearnos con imágenes televisivas estetizadas e involu­ cionadas hasta la confusión.

Y nadie tiene tiempo para eso: ya tenemos suficiente spam en nuestras bandejas de entrada.

Los videos de la manifestación, que expresaba preocupaciones urgentes en torno a la desigual­ dad y la violencia de género, se difundieron rápidamente en Internet: las mujeres reprodujeron públicamente

sus movimientos coreografiados en diversas protestas en América Latina y otros lugares. En unidad, las manifestantes cantaron sobre la violencia sexual, remarcando su mensaje con zapateados sincronizados y posturas simbóli­ cas, agachadas en el suelo como si estuvieran bajo arresto.

LASTESIS, cuyo nombre se traduce como “the theses” en inglés, crea espectáculos que pretenden hacer más accesible la teoría feminista.

Su enfoque comunicativo, que hace hincapié en ser compatible y la viralidad, ha sido fundamental para el creciente impulso del movi­ miento feminista en el Sur Global y más allá.

La exposición for the sake of dancing in the street [a favor de bailar en la calle], organizada por Yasmine Nasser Diaz en colaboración con Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) en OXY ARTS, homenaje­ aba a los artistas y colectivos que impulsan este movimiento.

Aunque muchos elementos de la exposición se referían específicamente al trabajo y el impacto de LASTESIS, otros apuntaban a movimientos feministas globales que han utilizado estrategias similares, trazando las conexiones entre estos esfuerzos. El título de la muestra está tomado de la canción de protesta persa de Shervin Hajipour de 2022 “Baraye”, cuyos versos se compar­ tieron a menudo en tuits para protestar por la muerte de Jina “Mahsa” Amini, una joven iraní de 22 años que fue asesinada el 16 de septiembre de 2022 mientras estaba bajo custodia policial por haber violado el mandato del hiyab (la letra de la canción “por el remordi­miento de vivir una vida ordinaria” amplificaba la urgen­ cia que había detrás de estas

manifestaciones)¹. Mediante el uso de estos medios, las protestas orquestadas en forma de bailes y consignas coreadas adquieren fuerza en el ámbito digital, forjando redes de solidaridad que trascienden las fronteras geográficas.

En una pantalla de tele­ visión situada en el vestíbulo de OXY ARTS, LASTESIS presentó imágenes recopiladas de mujeres interpretando Un violador, con los ojos venda­ dos (tanto para ocultar sus identidades como en referencia al uso de vendas de la policía), coreando el estribillo de la protesta: “Y la culpa no era mía, ni dónde estaba, ni cómo vestía” —mientras se movían al unísono—. Según la teórica académica Diana Taylor, la danza es portadora de un conocimiento incorporado que no se transmite a través de registros escritos, sino a través de la recreación² —el movimiento dinámico de las intérpretes es parte de lo que hizo que esta protesta en particular fuera tan eficaz y generalizada—. Existe un rico legado de protestas feministas impulsadas por artistas que son experiencias

multidimensionales a las que se accede a través de la partici­ pación activa. Dado que las puestas en escena más recientes se han diseñado para las plata­ formas de las redes sociales, pueden ser vistos fácilmente por nuevos públicos. Esta virali­ dad contrasta fuertemente con la ocultación a veces hermética de los archivos institucionales de los movimientos de protesta, que solo están disponibles para quienes los buscan.

En otra parte de la exposición, la comunidad internacional de cartografía feminista Geochicas creó un mapamundi interactivo que trazaba el impacto global de Un violador. El mapa táctil archivaba videos de la protesta compartidos en las redes sociales y marcaba su ubicación correspondiente con geoetique­ tas de color morado; las ubicaciones van desde lugares emblemáticos como el Museo Reina Sofía de Madrid hasta zonas remotas como el Monte Ida de Turquía³. Cada lugar pone de relieve la influencia de la canción de protesta y su capacidad para adaptarse a diversos contextos en todo el mundo, proporcionando

un grito de guerra conectivo: la letra de la canción de protesta se ha traducido a más de 22 idiomas, con versos modificados para reflejar el espectro prismático de las luchas del feminismo⁴. Un póster de risografía impreso por Entangled Roots Press, un proyecto de grabado radical con sede en Portland (Oregon), presentaba las traducciones al inglés y al español de la letra de LASTESIS en letras negras sans serif, que contrastan con ilustraciones amarillas de brazos cruzados. Apilados en una estantería para que los visitantes pudieran cogerlos, los carteles incluían instrucciones para recrear la coreografía que los acompañaba, un gesto táctil que contrastaba con los métodos mayoritariamente digitales que se han utilizado para difundir la manifestación.

El trabajo de LASTESIS también sirvió de contexto para la contribución de la curadora Nasser Diaz a la exposición.

Reproducida en un televisor de los años 90, su instalación de video de dos canales For Your Eyes Only (FYEO) [Solo para sus ojos (SPSO)] (2021–23) incorpora documentación de video de Un violador interpretado en Túnez, India y Turquía, señalando de nuevo a la comunidad global que la canción de protesta ha ayudado a cultivar. La insta­ lación, que se montó en una sala separada del resto de la exposición, tenía la forma del dormitorio de un adolescente.

Una bola de discoteca giratoria iluminaba una colección de objetos selectos, como el libro de Nawal El Saadawi The Hidden Face of Eve [La cara oculta de Eva] (1977) sobre una cómoda; un folleto de la ACLU titulado Know Your Rights (2021) sobre una alfombra de felpa rosa; y una camiseta con el lema

“Free Palestine [Libertad para Palestina]” colgada de un cesto de la ropa sucia. Muchos de los objetos reflejan los años de formación de Nasser Diaz, hija de inmigrantes yemeníes y criada en Estados Unidos en un periodo de intensa toma de conciencia política. Otros se refieren al momento actual, trazando un hilo conductor entre las luchas liberadoras pasadas y presentes.

Proyectados sobre una cama individual de la instalación, videos de TikTok e historias de Instagram protagonizadas por personas feministas y queer de la diáspora del sudoeste asiático y el norte de África (SWANA) bailaban alegremente mientras sonaba de fondo un tema techno en bucle de la artista sonora de Beirut Carol Abi Ghanem. La videoinsta­lación, convergencia de música y danza, era un rechazo del riesgo inherente a la afirmación de la autonomía corporal en espacios que tratan de reprimirla. Durante un recorrido por la exposición, Nasser Díaz llamó la atención sobre las injustas detenciones de mujeres de Oriente Medio que han sido avergonzadas públicamente por grabarse a sí mismas bailando. Su hincapié en el movimiento se hace eco de la estrategia de protesta de LASTESIS, que ha trascendido la censura en línea y las leyes estatales opresivas en torno al movimiento al negarse a acatar los mandatos represivos. Estas obras ofrecen un medio alternativo de partici­ par en manifestaciones políticas, haciendo especial hincapié en la seguridad de las mujeres y en una profunda comprensión de sus respectivos contextos.

Las redes sociales han reforzado las conexiones entre las comunidades feministas de

todo el mundo, adoptando un coro de voces que se hace más fuerte cada vez que se comparte, se reenvía o se recrea.

Mientras las protestas fugaces llegan a los archivos, surge una pregunta pertinente: ¿qué ocurre con los intercambios transitorios que tienen lugar durante las protestas, las melodías fugaces y los movimien­ tos de baile íntimos? Para los artistas reunidos en OXY ARTS, el paisaje digital proporciona un espacio para que estos intercambios vivan y perduren, celebrando la colectividad a través del movimiento y trans­ mitiendo y deleitándose con la alegría y la autonomía, incluso en contra de las condiciones globales que a menudo ordenan lo contrario.

Van Leo en el Hammer Museum 15 de julio– 5 de noviembre de 2023 Los fotógrafos han investigado la performance dentro del autorretrato antes de que el avance de las tecnologías hiciera habitual jugar con la identidad y la autopresentación. A finales de la década de 1970, por ejemplo, Cindy Sherman se fotografiaba a sí misma hacién­ dose pasar por las sensuales estrellas de las películas de Hitchcock o Antonioni, creando imágenes que examinaban los estereotipos de género y la inestabilidad de la presentación de uno mismo. Los smartphones y las redes sociales han hecho proliferar esta práctica, creando una generación de fotógrafos para los que hiperbolizar para la cámara es una parte más

de viajar, comer o simplemente existir. Pero una reciente exposi­ción en el Hammer Museum puso de manifiesto que el aclamado fotógrafo armenio egipcio Van Leo inves­ tigó la relación entre identidad, performance y fotografía mucho antes de que se produjera cualquiera de los momentos mencionados en los cánones culturales o de la historia del arte occidental. En esta exposición, la primera de carácter internacional del fallecido fotógrafo de El Cairo, se ofrecía a los espectadores una visión íntima de la vida personal y creativa de un individuo obsesionado con el uso de la fotografía para documentar el yo y sus permuta­ ciones. Aunque Van Leo no empezó a gozar de reconoci­ miento institucional hasta el final de su vida, Becoming Van Leo [Convertirse en Van Leo] mostró cómo su vida y su obra

fueron una declaración temprana sobre la fluidez y la naturaleza multifacética de la identidad.

La exposición estaba estructurada cronológicamente, comenzando por la infancia del fotógrafo y abarcando toda su carrera, desde sus primeros experimentos en la década de 1930 hasta su práctica en el estudio, que se prolongó hasta la década de 1990. La primera sección de la exposición mostraba fotos de Van Leo, nacido Levon Boyadjian en 1921 en el seno de una familia cristiana de clase media que llegó a El Cairo a principios de la década de 1880, huyendo de la violencia étnica del Imperio otomano. Aparece con su familia y sus compañeros de colegio, pasando de ser un niño vestido de ángel a un joven con ropa deportiva, lo que demuestra su temprana fascinación por los disfraces y las actuaciones.

de un mezcolanza de objetos personales, como trofeos, tarjetas de presentación y libros.

En esta narración temprana se incluyen fotografías tomadas en el primer estudio fotográfico comercial de Van Leo, que abrió con su hermano en el apartamento familiar en 1941.

Bautizado como “Studio Angelo”, atendía a artistas que pasaban por El Cairo en busca de fotos glamurosas, un género en el que Van Leo empezó a desarro­ llar el uso cinemático de la luz y las sombras por el que más tarde sería conocido.

En el centro del bucle cronológico en el que estaba enrollada la exposición, exten­ dido a lo largo de la pared exterior de la galería, se encon­ traban los autorretratos de Van Leo tomados en la década de 1940, que representaban una pequeña selección de los centenares que realizó a lo largo de los años. Estos autorretratos, que en su mayoría se mostraban por primera vez con motivo de esta exposición, eran empeños privados, realizados cuando el artista cerraba su estudio al público durante unas horas al día. En la mayoría de ellos, Van Leo aparece ataviado con diversos trajes y posando con accesorios de utilería, cada imagen construyendo un personaje diferente. Para convertirse en Jesucristo, el Hombre Lobo, el Zorro o cualquier otra figura, se dejaba crecer la barba, se afeitaba la cabeza y modificaba peso. En una de las fotografías, nuestro protagonista luce una chaqueta y una barba poblada, con la camisa abotonada extremadamente alta, mientras apunta a la cámara con una pistola. Encuadrada como si el espectador mirara por el ojo de una cerradura, Van Leo está iluminado desde abajo,

creando duras sombras que extienden dramáticamente sus cejas hacia arriba. Otro Self-Portrait [Autorretrato] (domingo, 1 de noviembre de 1942) muestra al artista imitando furtivamente a una estrella de cine. Luciendo labial, un collar y aretes de botón, mira fijamente fuera de cámara, el encuadre descentrado.

Un vestido oscuro se desliza hacia abajo por su cuerpo, dejando al descubierto su pecho desnudo. Su mandíbula está muy marcada y sus ojos un poco melancólicos, como si fuera a echarse a llorar: el espectador empieza a comprender el compromiso emocional del artista con sus hiperbólicas permutaciones del yo.

Cada uno de los autorre­ tratos de Van Leo explora las numerosas influencias internas y externas que moldearon su identidad. La influencia tanto de Hollywood como del cine egipcio está sepultada en las páginas de sus cuadernos —expuestos en la sala central de la exposición—, llenos de nombres, años y lugares de nacimiento de famosos, como si estos detalles formaran parte del mundo interior del artista.

Estos manuscritos, legados a la American University in Cairo pocos años antes de su muerte, atestiguan el tiempo a solas que Van Leo dedicaba a los iconos cinematográficos.

“Fotografías, películas, revistas… eran la materia de la que están hechos los sueños”, escribió el curador de la exposición Negar Azimi sobre la obra de Van Leo en Aperture en 2017. “El estudio fotográfico era en sí mismo una especie de máquina de los sueños”¹. Más allá de sus detalla­ das notas sobre celebridades, el cambio de nombre —de Levon Boyadjian a Van Leo— rendía

homenaje al mundo cinemato­ gráfico del que se anegaba.

Tras haber interiorizado por completo sus queridos perso­ najes cinematográficos, Van Leo empezó a interpretar una nueva identidad compuesta a partir de los muchos personajes que veía en la pantalla, manifes­ tando plenamente la máquina de los sueños.

Además de los autorre­ tratos y objetos personales, Becoming Van Leo mostraba algunos de los logros públicos más significativos del artista.

A mediados de su carrera, era conocido por sus fotografías de famosos actores egipcios como Omar Sharif, Rushdy Abaza y Samia Gamal. Su foto de la actriz y cantante Shérihan, Shérihan. Actress. Photo before she was on screen [Shérihan.

Actriz. Foto antes de aparecer en pantalla] (1976), muestra a una joven vestida de vaquera, empuñando lo que podría ser la misma pistola que Van Leo había utilizado en su autorretrato años antes. De pie, con los pies orientados en direcciones opuestas, proyecta una larga sombra a sus espaldas, ilumi­ nada desde un ángulo en plano picado en un ejemplo perfecto de las dotes de Van Leo para la iluminación dramática.

Mientras que esta joven se convertiría más tarde en una célebre actriz e icono de la cultura pop con una afición camaleónica por los cambios extravagantes de vestuario, aquí aparece discreta y ambigua.

Frente al objetivo de Van Leo, se convierte en un vaso comuni­ cante para la tesis visual del fotógrafo: que la identidad, ya sea interpretada para la cámara o no, puede ser algo multitudinario, sin categorizar y sorprendente. Su aceptación de esta indeterminación estaba muy adelantada a las normas

cinematográficas y culturales de la época.

En un momento en que los conceptos de identidad y roles de género eran mucho más rígidos y predominantes, Van Leo creó un mundo foto­ gráfico en el que el yo podía ser algo compuesto: tanto un vaquero como una estrella de cine. Mientras Van Leo vivía en una ciudad progresista, las estrellas de sus amados mundos cinematográficos estaban encasilladas, reflejando los estereotipos de género y raza rígidos que él remezclaba y desafiaba. Encontró su base en las fluctuaciones de la identi­ dad, reinventándose ante la cámara y representando diversos géneros y personalidades.

Becoming Van Leo cuenta más que simplemente la historia del viaje de Levon Boyadjian para convertirse en el fotógrafo Van Leo: anticipa la manera en que la cultura ha avanzado hacia concepciones de género más expansivas, un camino que Van Leo ayudó a allanar.

pregunta el narrador, o simple­ mente está “teniendo una profunda experiencia artística¹?

La escena es curiosa porque identifica algo que todos hemos experimentado —a saber, la desconcertante discrepancia entre la ceremonia y reverencia con la que se trata el arte en el contexto de la galería o el museo y la realidad de cómo realmente nos hace sentir—.

Se nos dice implícitamente que el arte debería conmovernos, provocarnos, confundirnos e inspirarnos. Si no surge una respuesta emocional o intelectual tan poderosa de inmediato, según este pensa­ miento, entonces o algo está mal con nosotros o algo está mal con la obra.

El filósofo Alva Noë echa por tierra esta noción, argumen­tando que el esfuerzo es fundamental para la experien­ cia estética. En su libro The Entanglement: How Art and Philosophy Make Us What We Are (2023), Noë propone que las obras de arte —y los fenóme­ nos estéticos en general— no se caractericen por su belleza o significado, sino por su inescrutabilidad. “El objeto artístico, en su forma más pura, es algo que no reconocemos”, escribe². En lugar de servir como “estímulos que desencadenan un tipo especial de episodio en la conciencia” (pensemos en el alterado visitante de museo de Lerner), las obras de arte desafían activamente al especta­ dor, exigiéndole que participe en la creación de su contenido y significado³. La “ceguera estética”, como la denomina Noë, se refiere a esta misma opacidad, a la necesidad de nuestro “movimiento esforzado de ver hacia ver de otro modo”⁴.

En resumen, más que una tarea de análisis o evaluación, relacio­ narse con una obra de arte es

una práctica, una cuestión de cómo nos orientamos hacia el mundo.

Este es el proceso que inspira la obra conceptual de Nancy Lupo, cuya exposición Max Payday [Día de pago] se clausuró recientemente en la galería Morán Morán de Ciudad de México. Junto a la nueva obra escultórica y videográfica de la exposición, se instalaron en la galería una serie de meditaciones a modo de diario dispuestas como textos murales con la crónica de los meses y años previos a la creación de la muestra. El texto, una constelación asociativa libre de los enredos de Lupo con las personas, los acontecimien­ tos y (sobre todo) los objetos que salpicaron la enrevesada gestación de la exposición, describía lo que podríamos considerar sus propios intentos de “ver de otra manera”,

ofreciendo al espectador un generoso punto de partida para embarcarse en una práctica similar.

Aunque no es raro que los textos murales sirvan para contextualizar las obras expues­ tas, Lupo llevó esta función al extremo, ofreciendo miles de palabras en un inexpresivo monólogo interior que recordaba a escritores de autoficción como Lerner, Sheila Heti y Tao Lin⁵.

Aunque Lupo tiene una fuerte presencia en este texto, sus verdaderos protagonistas son una serie de objetos: el Chevy S-10 de 1998 de la artista; su sofá Percival Lafer; una cadena de oro de dudosa procedencia; la casa suburbana de los padres de Lupo, a la que la artista acude para depositar carros llenos de objetos efímeros del estudio.

En sus escritos, Lupo examina detenidamente todos estos objetos, junto a muchos otros,

y documenta con franqueza el proceso por el que han servido de base y, en algunos casos, se han integrado literalmente en las obras de arte de la galería.

Max Payday se basa en una serie de esculturas de “sacapiojos” o “comecocos”.

Lupo lleva varios años explo­ rando esta forma, inspirada en los sacapiojos de papiroflexia que se encuentran en muchas aulas de primaria. En la inter­ pretación de Lupo, los pliegues numerados de estos objetos se cosen sobre un panel de madera, formando topografías parecidas a cajas de huevos hechas de papel higiénico, pigmento, hilo de pescar y pegamento, entre otros materia­ les. Los 10 picos piramidales de cada tablero llevan los números de teléfono móvil de los amigos de Lupo, lo que confiere una inesperada literali­ dad a estas caprichosas obras.

En Morán Morán, estos ensam­ blajes rectangulares colgaban de las paredes por parejas, flanqueando carcasas de convertidores catalíticos pinta­ das de amarillo mango; las carcasas recuerdan vagamente a cráneos sin rasgos, una cuali­ dad acentuada por la inquietante corona metálica situada encima de I think they should be low, I mean we are guilty of it too. [Creo que deberían ser bajos, quiero decir que nosotros también somos culpables de ello.] (2023).

Estos componentes de automóvil recuperados son una pieza central dramática en el texto de la exposición de Lupo: el robo de un convertidor catalítico de la camioneta pick-up de la artista y sus esfuerzos meticulosamente inventariados para repararlo ocupan un espacio considerable en sus escritos. La búsqueda homérica genera más de 1400 palabras que finalmente alcanzan un

registro poético, vagamente oculto: “De modo no brusco, solo melancólico, las hojas están cayendo y estoy intentando leer las hojas y entender qué significa todo esto”.

Esta necesidad deses­ perada de interpretar un presente caótico, de armonizar con algún orden superior oculto, es el tema central de la exposición —se resume perfectamente en la figura del sacapiojos—. La cadena de oro de imitación a la que se hace referencia en los escritos de Lupo colgaba de uno de estos trípticos montados en la pared, I’m am all about houses [Me a mi me encantan las casas] (2023).

En una digresión humorística, Lupo contó que descubrió la cadena —que lleva un sugerente sello de “14K” en el cierre— mientras hacía senderismo por el Runyon Canyon el día después de que le robaran el catalizador, un suceso que interpretó como prueba de que “el universo quiere arreglarlo todo”. Llevó la cadena con codiciosa reverencia durante semanas antes de descubrir que era falsa.

Lupo infundió al espacio de la galería de la misma cuali­ dad mágica y de búsqueda que transmite su texto mediante inteligentes modificaciones del edificio de estilo colonial californiano de Morán Morán.

Pequeños cortes circulares en el panel de yeso de la galería permitían la entrada de luz y aire en movimiento en el espacio expositivo, llamando la atención sobre una infraestructura física que a menudo se pasa por alto.

En otros lugares, pequeñas ofrendas de escarabajos, pieles de serpiente y réplicas de espinas fundidas en metal poblaban los rincones y grietas del habitual­mente ordenado cubo blanco. Al mismo tiempo que apuntaban, como el esotérico

texto mural de Lupo, a las causas y significados ocultos, estas intervenciones también servían para situar física y temporal­ mente al espectador en el encuentro con el arte, poniendo al descubierto el proceso de mirar y descubrir.

Las meditaciones de Lupo sobre estos objetos y fenómenos ilustran la concepción de Noë del encuentro estético: “El arte exige que vayamos más allá de las formas familiares y arraigadas de mirar, pensar, actuar o, más en general, de ser, que nos constriñen y, en muchos sentidos, nos mantienen cautivos”⁶. Tanto si nos fijamos en una camioneta pick-up Chevy como en la pared en blanco de una galería, el arte de Lupo promete una oportunidad para ver de otra manera. Sin embargo, por muchas palabras que gaste, Max Payday acaba preguntando mucho más de lo que responde.

Como sugiere Noë, este tipo de práctica estética —la que se relaciona con los objetos sin una directriz clara— no aporta conocimientos del tipo habitual; tiene poco interés en las soluciones, el significado o incluso la belleza. Al igual que el visitante de una galería, su tarea nunca termina, sus respuestas siempre son provisio­ nales. Lo que importa es que se molesta en preguntar en primer lugar.

SELENOPHILE, MOON JAR Modernity in Tradition

In this exhibition, Kwon Daesup presents Moon Jar and Ibho. Moon Jar, more formally known as ‘Wonho,’ has the round and white shape of the moon and is a form that connects two hemispheres of top and bottom. An essential technique contributing to the aestheticism of moon jars is combining the middle joint. If each hemisphere were a semicircle, joining them would have been convenient; however, Kwon’s intention to slightly tilt the shape allows the Korean sentiment to express the moon jar from new perspectives. Therefore, a sense of stability and comfort brings out the modern sense hidden in the tradition, giving every look a new and attractive abundance.

Shin Meekyoung presents eight moon jars in this exhibition. Shin’s Moon Jar leads to a re-defining of the moon jar, which holds the time the tradition has passed. In addition, her moon jar from the Fossilized

Time series symbolically reproduces artifacts that give value to the disappearing subjects by carefully putting gold and silver foil on an unsustainable material.

Lee Inchin’s works are incoherent due to his intended anomaly. Yet, the incoherence connotes the artist’s masculinity and liberty. Unlike the other artists, Lee recreates his jar based on Onggi, a more widely used ceramic than the moon jar.

His works are rigid and rough textured; however, Lee puts the warm sensibility of Onggi, which once was used popularly among people in Korea. Furthermore, Lee asserts that his jars are more affectionate when they are not artificial but art seeking the providence of nature. Respectively, his effort to understand the nature, material, and Onggi led to a discovery of “newness” in jars.

Kang Minsoo’s moon jar is made with Terra Alba, or white soil from Yanggu, Gangwon-do, Korea. Kang’s moon jar has a different round shape due to each sphere’s different proportions. Nevertheless, this disproportionate and unadorned style is rather attractive with Kang’s intention to embody the Korean sentiment of restrained beauty. The simplicity of the line, coming from the purity of white color and generosity of shape, alludes to the aesthetical beauty of white porcelain and Confucianism from the Joseon dynasty.

The purity and softness of the white color serve as the artist’s intention to signal the mind that he desires to achieve through life.

Kim Jonghoon defines ‘creation’ as a process of finding another self within itself. He said, “It is a realization achieved through a path of awareness.” Twenty years of experience and Kim’s effort to realize the moon jar eventually led him to discover “newness” in jars. In this exhibition, he presents his rich understanding of materials and thoughts from the realization. “I strived to embed the effort, the fire, the glaze, the time, frustration, and pleasure in my works,” he said.

The Korean custom of wishing while looking at the full moon on Korean Thanksgiving Day is called “Dal-mat-e,” or “moon greeting.” In this prolonged tradition, families gather and wish each other for well-being. Gana Art Los Angeles’ exhibition “Selenophile” commemorates Korean Thanksgiving with artists Kwon Daesup, Shin Meekyoung, Kim Jonghoon, Kang Minsoo, and Lee Inchin.

Furthermore, the moon has become an essential motif as a symbol of abundance, expressing femininity and soil. Therefore, the moon jar also articulates the symbolic meaning of the moon through its milky color, generous shape, and simplicity without excessive decoration. These five artists, in particular, share a persistent exploration and attitude toward the moon jar as well as the material that forms the basis of their work.

Although the moon jar is a simple round and white shape from the 18th century, their passion for the subject allowed them to put uniqueness and originality in their works. For the artists, “newness” comes from rethinking and reinterpreting the existing rather than realizing non-existent ideas. “Selenophile” attracts attention with the artists’ interpretations of “newness” from the moon jar.
