Carbon Valley Older Adult Resource Fair Was Success!

S

aturday, April 13 – over 60 adults attended the first inaugural event designed to inform older adults of the resources available in our area. A light breakfast was donated by Santiago’s and Daylight donuts. 16+ vendors were there to educate folks about local resources. Folks filled out survey’s at the end of the event. Comments included: “This was very comprehensive. Please do it next year too! All Good! Excellent Fair! Got what I was looking for today.” Attorney, Clinton Carlisle, spoke on Estate Planning: what you need to know. He was informative and answered many questions. Everyone appreciated his presentation and knew that there was so much more information needing to be covered but just not enough time. He covered wills, trusts, Durable Power of Attorney. Who to have on your checking accounts as you age. Don’t make assumptions about the kids sharing everything. Communicate clearly with all family members. Get an elder attorney if things are complicated to help you make plans Jessica O’Leary, a local Gerontologist, spoke about Family Caregiving Tips. She covered: Self-care – how to care for yourself and not be a “super-person”, who puts their needs last. It’s important to know your resources and use them. Don’t wait till your exhausted! Planning for the future –Know your community resources. Go to events like this. Make your wishes known to loved ones and family members. Educate yourself - Know what resources are out there. Create a binder with your resources. Investigate now instead of later when you are in a crisis. Get support - Don’t’ try to give care on your own. Ask for help! Advance directives – telling your family what you want if you are unable to make decisions for yourself isn’t enough. Everyone over 18 should fill out their advance directives. Keep a copy in your glove box. Give to family members and keep your original in a safe place with your will, etc. If you don’t have Advance Directives, any interested party can make decisions about your health care and that can get messy, especially if you haven’t told them your wishes.

Know your options for care – What does Medicare cover? What services are not covered by Medicare? How much does home care cost? What does Medicaid cover? Put all of this in your resource binder. Legal and financial affairs – Make sure you have a Durable Power of Attorney to help you manage your finances if you are unable to do so or you need help with finance as you age. If you need an attorney, go to an Elder Attorney, not someone who practices a different type of law. Family – Families can be supportive and they can be messy. Give family members jobs that they can do well. You decide who you want to have helping you. It’s ok to set boundaries. Palliative and Hospice Care – What are the differences? Palliative care is for someone who is very ill and needs more supportive services that can be provided by a team of professionals alongside your Primary Care doctor. People are not dying but they are very ill. Hospice is supportive, in-home services for someone who has a 6 month terminal diagnosis. Hospice is paid for by Medicare. Many people wait too long to get the support that hospice can give them. Hospice helps manage pain, supports the caregiver and family members and enables you to remain in your home. Thanks to all the sponsors and organizations who attended this informative event. If you are interested in more helpful information, the Annual Caregiver Symposium will be held at the Jewish Community Center in Boulder on May 22,. There will be many presentations and resources there to help older adults. Please rsvp to reserve a space now. Planning for a Special Vacation: Such as Tuscany

A

s I am planning my long-awaited vacation to Tuscany, several issues come to mind. One is definitely doing the research so we can fully enjoy our vacation and the other is preparing for our trip. Some things I am considering are: • Safety • Health • True enjoyment The first thing I considered is that more and more countries are requiring tourists to purchase travel insurance. As tourism grows everywhere, so also is the rising cost of hospitalization and medical care. This is a large expense for many countries who have had to cover the costs for vacationers who required healthcare services while visiting their country. Of course, determining factors and requirements vary by country: from all visitors to limited requirements for students and expats. There are some tour operators that don’t offer travel insurance but require proof of coverage before you travel with them. I always get travel insurance and suggest my clients also consider it. If you are traveling internationally, your insurance here may not cover you while you are abroad. Make sure you ask your insurance carrier. For Safety: Always consider safety and theft. Try not look like a tourist when traveling. Not only the way you dress but how you act. Leave the “Bling” at home. Pickpockets are everywhere. Carry a second wallet that’s filled with just enough to make them think it’s your real wallet or

purse. Men can put a rubber band around their wallet to make it harder to slip out of their pockets. Please, please don’t flash your cash while you’re paying for things. Before you leave your hotel or cruise ship, take just what you may think you will spend or carry some of the cash in a separate location. Uber and Lyft are great but ALWAYS research the App regarding car and driver prior to getting into the car. I was just at a Mexico seminar and they advised to take a taxi that’s licensed in Mexico. There are some unsavory characters everywhere in the world as we know. For Health: On the plane, try to stay hydrated with water. Alcohol dehydrates you. Sitting for long periods can boost your risk of leg cramps or even blood clots. I always take antiseptic wipes and wipe down my tray and arm rests. Try not to put anything in the seat pocket (never know what’s in that!) Use your own pillow and blanket too. For Enjoyment: Research your destination and ask your travel consultant for suggestions and tips on how to expand your knowledge and experiences of your vacation. Check out YouTube videos from those who have already traveled to where you are going. You can enjoy every single moment, from planning, to the trip itself and after, the memories you have created.
