Unplugged at Firestone Charter Academy

Firestone Charter Academy recently embraced its mission of “technology with a purpose” through two designated “Unplugged Days” on October 10th and November 8th. During these days, educators at the academy reverted to traditional teacher methods, fostering an environment where students learned without the aid of technology. A notable highlight of this initiative was Mr. Santanna’s engaging presentation to fourth-grade students about the Middle Ages. Bringing artifacts and facsimiles from the era, he provided students with tangible connections to historical technology. The students, in turn, showcased impressive knowledge of the time period. Even the innovation teacher, Mrs. Evers, participated in the unplugged days by guiding students in learning activities. Logic Academy students collaborated on a structural engineering project, constructing bridges solely from spaghetti and hot glue. The ongoing testing revealed that the current highest load-bearing capacity of these creative structures was an impressive twelve books. In the lower grades, students explored pixelated images by creating an 800 X 1200 resolution image using binary pixels. Meanwhile, second and third-graders worked collaboratively to discover the optimal use of gumdrops and toothpicks to support the weight of a book. The triangular shape emerged as the most robust design, prompting students to not only engineer but also unleash their creativity by repurposing materials for various projects. Teachers employed diverse instructional strategies, including Kagan group work methods, chants for memorization, and thinking games. Students delved into reading books and documenting their learning experiences, reinforcing the academy’s commitment to Classical and Core Knowledge education. These activities exemplify the academy’s mission to foster critical thinking and creativity among students. By exploring historical impacts and connections between technology, music, art, and literature, students broaden their literacy base. The academy emphasizes that learning goes beyond finding the answers on a computer, it involves experiencing the world in diverse ways. Firestone Charter Academy positions itself as a school where creativity, ingenuity, and reason thrive through a curriculum that extends beyond the confines of technology. Students and teachers alike recognize that technology encompasses more than just computers, and true learning involves developing innovative solutions and posing new questions. Choosing Firestone Charter Academy means choosing an educational environment where students are equipped to understand the global impact of history and contribute meaningfully to the world. Surviving Beyond the Holidays Hamas released the first group of hostages as planned. Then delayed the promised release of the next group of hostages. Finally, three groups have been exchanged. More wait for freedom. How do the hostages survive the mental anguish? Hopes dashed. Defeat. Their spirits crushed. Under those circumstances, I’d rather die—I think. I’m not in Israel, or a hostage or prisoner of war (POW). I’ve never experienced intense mental and physical torture. However, lately, I feel in bondage. Oppressed. Current circumstances in my life are holding me captive and the holidays tend to magnify those problems. I struggle with whether I have the right to feel discouraged and sad when I read what others are going through around the world. I beat up myself emotionally. I have a roof over my head and food to eat. I have a private toilet and hot shower. I can usually pay my bills. Why should I feel empty when I have the necessities in life? It’s impossible for me to hide my distress over situations in my family. My sorrow seeped during Thanksgiving dinner where many were missing around the table. My aging parents slow decline in health. Many friends have intense struggles of their own. We each live shattered, wobbly lives. How did we get here? I’m reminded of an Easter dinner with my fractured family. Afterward, I

realized that divorce, remarriage, selfish motives, and wounded hearts, wove us together. Essentially, each of us brought our bad decisions to the dinner table. The ham, potatoes, rolls, and beans tilted and tottered, on top of the invisible piles of debris where the stench of unforgiveness littered every conversation. Others have shared similar experiences. How do we deal with the negativity, loneliness, fear, and insecurity? The holidays continue through the years, so do wars. How do prisoners do it? Released POWs share that they worked to take every thought captive, while in chains. Years passed with brutal treatment and conditions. But they survived by controlling their thoughts. Although malnutrition, dehydration, and abuse made it a constant struggle. Many said they leaned into their faith and thought of their families and their country. Chris Cancialosi, said in an article about struggles, that people in crisis tend to fall into three categories. 1. Finding false hope and losing a little bit of self every time the hope is dashed. 2. Losing hope altogether. 3. Finding resilience: These people don’t hang hopes on the next date the crisis should end but rather they adapt to the situation. Realization and acceptance of no control over the situation helps one to adapt and adjust thinking thereby experiencing survival of the horrible event.

1999-2023

I recognize myself in all three categories. Thankfully, the times I’ve lost all hope, was temporary. Sometimes, I vacillate between false hope and resilience. During the times of false hope, I’m tempted to become a hermit and hide until things return to normal. Eventually, I ask myself, What is normal? I come out of hiding and decide to find a new normal. That’s where I’m at this moment. Taking a step back, I’m attempting to refocus on what I know to be true about my family life in America and the happenings around the world. Like the POWs, I’m striving to lean into my faith in God. I know He has the power to change things, but I also know He’s given me free will to make whatever decisions I choose. With that, comes consequences from the wrong ones. There’s a plan laid out for my life on this earth. While I’ve made many mistakes and detours, I believe the Lord forgives me, heals me, and restores me. When I take my last breath, I believe I’ll be exactly where God knew I’d be. God knows the end of my story and the outcome of these wars. I could blame Him for tragedy, mental distress, and insecurities but the truth is, most human sorrows started from our hearts not God’s. Trusting these facts helps me, like an invisible hand picks me up between two fingers and moves me from one location and puts me back in the place where I’m

Area Mayors’ Report—For those of us who do not attend meetings Frederick Mayor, Tracie Crites

z As the year comes to an end, it’s a great time to reflect on and celebrate the many accomplishments 2023 has blessed us with! The recent approval of 2C in the coordinated election marks a step forward, enabling the Town to expand the use of Open Space tax dollars for parks and trail improvements, as prioritized by the community. Thank you FREDerick, for supporting this initiative to enhance our outdoor amenities! In the realm of infrastructure, we have created progress in

Mead Mayor, Colleen Whitlow

z Responsible Growth: Development Impact Fees will be increased by 5.52% starting January 1, 2024. This increase follows the Impact Fee Study recommendations approved by the Board of Trustees in 2021. Development impact fees are a one-time fee imposed by the Town of Mead on new development projects, both residential and commercial, to pay for all or a portion of the costs of providing public services to

water security, transportation, and economic development, addressing residents’ requests for amenities. Our dedication to fostering a thriving business environment in Frederick yielded five projects, including precision manufacturing and automation, retail, and distribution. This dedicated work added over 135,0000 sq. ft. of industrial space, created 500 new job opportunities in Frederick, and earned the Town “Small Community of the Year” award by the Economic Development Council of Colorado (EDCC). z We couldn’t be more proud of our community for engaging with us every step of the way! Thank you for participating in surveys, plan concepts, events, meetings, open houses, and our inaugural Telephone Town Hall. In fact, Frederick has been honored with the prestigious 2023 “Voice of the People” national award, a testament to our commitment to incorporating resident input into our decisionmaking processes. This recognition underscores our community’s pivotal role in steering the course toward a brighter future. The end of the year is not a conclusion but an ongoing journey and commitment to ensuring Frederick’s prominence of

excellence! As your Mayor, my pledge has been to listen and amplify the collective community voice, preserve our heritage and small-town charm while securing our future, and create the best Town in Colorado to live, work, and play! z ’Tis the season of joy, and I invite you to immerse yourself in the festive cheer at our Festival of Lights celebration on December 2, in Downtown Frederick and Crist Park from 5 pm to 8 pm. You’ll enjoy a parade winding through town, free horsedrawn carriage rides, ice sculptures, carolers, and the countdown to the tree lighting! For more details, visit FrederickCO.gov/FOL. In the spirit of giving, I encourage you to participate in our cherished community program, Santa Cops. The Frederick Police Department is accepting donations to support families in need. You can contribute (cash, check, or credit cards accepted) at 333 Fifth Street, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm. For further information, please call 720.382.5700. z Merry Christmas FREDerick! May this holiday season be filled with warmth, joy, and community spirit.

the new development. These fees help reduce the economic burden on Mead. z Reliable Infrastructure: Mead is collaborating with Charge Ahead Colorado and Charge Point to facilitate the installation of public EV charging stations in the community. The rise of communitybased electric car charging stations is a significant step forward in transitioning to sustainable transportation. Public charging stations have a range of benefits, including reducing carbon emissions and boosting the local economy. z Public Safety: The Mead Police Department utilized the Neighbors app by Ring to promote neighborhood safety. The app enables residents to monitor neighborhood activity, share crime and safety-related items, and receive real-time safety alerts. Deemed the “new neighborhood watch,” this app allows residents to assist Mead police and keep neighbors connected, even if they don’t own a Ring.

z Fiscal Stability: The Colorado Department of Local Affairs awarded the Town of Mead 1.5 million in grant funding from the Main Street LIVE initiative to assist with the construction of the new Community Center. The project was reviewed based on the degree of need, relationship to community goals, resiliency, and community support. The grant will help construct the community site, which features a full-sized cross-court gymnasium, multipurpose/programming room, storage rooms, lobby/reception, staff offices, and restrooms. z Connected Community: Winter youth basketball for children grades 3-8 is open for registration through December 8. This youth program fosters good sportsmanship and teamwork while teaching the rules and fundamentals of the game. New to Mead?? Health&WELL BEING Food for the Soul: Driving VS Being Driven

If you’ve seen the movie, Driving Miss Daisy, you understand what it is to be driven. If you have a driver’s license, you understand what it is to drive yourself. They each have their place in society, but driving yourself is better due to the independence and lack of inconvenience to the driver when he/she isn’t your chauffeur. Not that you (or me) want to be reminded, but I had a stroke in May that suspended my driving for a while and inconvenienced my wife simultaneously. In the State of Colorado doctors are not required to report heart attacks or strokes to the DMV, so your driver’s license is still valid BUT. But insurance would likely not pay for an accident when you were driving and involved in one, so few people are willing to take the risk, and prefer for someone else to operate the steering wheel for a while until they recuperate

1999-2023

sufficiently. Did I mention that I’m a car guy, love driving, chair the annual Mead Motorheads car show, and own 4 classics? That’s correct, since I was 16 back in Iowa and got my license, I’ve been a driver. And before that I drove Dad’s MasseyHarris tractor all over the fields caring for crops. Granted, that’s not as exotic, but it is driving. So, I got ‘smitten’ and taken out of the fast lane for a bit. Gloom, despair, and agony on me. Deep dark depression, excessive misery. Or so I thought (except for the depression- that’s in the Hee Haw song but not in my life since the Lord took over.) But it was challenging for the four months until the doctor put in my medical notes that I was fit again to drive, which I immediately began doing. Pam and I were BOTH greatly relieved; she because she didn’t have to keep canceling her life events to drive me to mine, and me because I once again

had the steering wheel under my control. Praise God for the young lady occupational therapist who tested me and my primary physician who ‘signed off’. And tank You Jesus that we had no accidents during that time (or since) because that could have thrown a real wrench (figuratively) into both of our lives. Now you needn’t drive the back roads just because I’m back on the road again; I’m probably a bit safer driver than before when I thought (like you do) that I was a great driver. I’m not sure you think I am a great driver, but I’m pretty sure you think you are. In any case I am happy to be out there in all kinds of weather seeking my own destinations accident-free. So far, so good. And if you’re wondering why I wrote this whole column on such a silly subject, I’ll tell you that someday YOU may find yourself facing a similar dilemma, or maybe a close friend or relative, and you can better relate to them from the number of facts that I shared in this treatise.

Health&WELL BEING What’s Your BHAG?

What? What are you talking about? What is a BHAG? BHAG = Big, Hairy, Audacious, Goal! It’s the time of year that many of us start thinking about our next year’s goals - so what’s your BHAG? Let me define a little more what a BHAG is. It’s a “clear and compelling” goal that “serves as a unifying focal point of effort.” It’s a goal that has a clear finish line so you know when you have achieved it. It’s a goal that you have a 50 - 70 percent chance of achieving. It’s not something so outlandish that it’s highly unlikely that you will ever achieve it, but it’s definitely something you’ll have to stretch yourself to make happen. It doesn’t matter what aspect of your life you have a BHAG for. It can be professional, physical, spiritual, health-related, etc. Most of my BHAGs are physical as that goal keeps me motivated to move, eat, and take care of myself with purpose. It’s also very social for me as I wrangle my friends to join me in the fun! Research studies show that specific, difficult goals lead to higher performance than no goals as well as vague, abstract goals such as “do your best”. For most, a clear compelling goal that feels out of reach is exciting. It floods your body with feelings of possibility and gets your creativity flowing with ideas of how you can achieve the goal. These types of big goals generally make you more present, more focused, and more joyful as you work toward that goal on a daily basis. Lastly, if your BHAG isn’t scary – you may want to think bigger! I know you are capable of much more than you think you are! When you set a big goal, you jolt yourself out of your self-imposed limitations. It helps you get out of your “I can’t” mentality. Dream big! Create your BHAG then break it down into quarterly è monthly è daily goals. My BHAG for 2023 is (was by the time you read this), Ironman Arizona. I’m not quite sure what my goal for 2024 will be yet. Do you have any suggestions? Do you want to create a BHAG but are afraid or maybe you don’t know how to break it down? Wherever you are, whatever you want to do, give me a call so I can help you! Challenge Winner, Group Classes & Personal Training

1999-2023

Time For Change Personal Training and Fitness Group started a 6 Week Move & Lose Reset Challenge in mid-September to help us improve our overall health by being more active, gaining lean muscle, and improving nutrition. I’m so proud of all that participated and worked hard on improving their health and making lifestyle changes that they’ll carry on beyond the challenge. Congratulations to Rene Dukes, winner of the 6 Week Move & Lose Reset Challenge! She had a 4.48% loss, is down 8lbs with many inches lost, and earned the $200 cash prize for having the highest percentage of weight loss. Rene did this by attending my Group Fitness Classes 3 times per week, using the treadmill, CoreFirst Trainer, and following her nutrition plan. Are you looking for a place to workout that is fun and judgment free? Then join us for my ladies Fitness Group Classes. Interval/Strength Training Classes are Mondays at 9:30am, Cardio Walking Workouts Tuesdays at 10am & Wednesdays at 7pm. The CoreFirst Trainer Class is Friday at 9:30am. Separation and Reconciliation

In a recent CVCR publication, we touched on how God is central to our nation’s founding and why our country has outlasted so many others with the same Republican form of government and the same constitution. We can see from the rise and fall of nations that the principles of freedom only work when a government derives power from the consent of the people who have acknowledged that their rights come from God. The word equity is used often nowadays, but equity is not the same as equality. The founding era’s expression of equality was not about guaranteeing equal outcomes; it was based on certain truths that all people are “created equal.” The truth that all people are created equal by their creator was so crucial that the opening paragraph of the Declaration of Independence affirms that government can be abolished when it destroys the ends of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These sentiments echo the English philosopher John Locke, who proposed that legitimate governments are instituted by the people “for the mutual preservation of their lives, liberties, and estates” and that illegitimate governments are tyrannical and do not protect people’s natural rights. Natural rights given to you as a human being were described by our founding document as inalienable, meaning those rights cannot be transferred; they can only be voluntarily surrendered. Rights given or defined by the government can be taken away from the government. Therefore, this American experiment of self-governance relies on people who rely on a power higher than themselves. Next month, we dive even deeper to explain why human rights must come from a supreme creator. And why that knowledge secures the freedom for you and your loved ones to pursue happiness. Your friend, Publius

Jim Sutton, Broker Associate

Whether you are buying your first home or your fifth, the steps are much the same. The differences are in your experience and comfort level. If it is your first home, you will be dealing with new processes as well as different technology. Ask questions, so you will better understand both. The first step is important. Select a Realtor with whom you will be comfortable. In addition to interviewing several agents, talk to people you know who have recently used the services of a Realtor. Ask the agents you interview if they are familiar with first time home buyers and if they like dealing with them. You should select someone who is patient, knowledgeable and willing to teach. You will need not only the answers to questions, but also guidance in knowing what questions to ask. Talk with your agent as to how they get paid, who they are representing and what services they will provide. Getting pre-qualified or pre-approved for a loan is the next step. Pre-qualifying is the process of talking to a lender to see how much you can borrow based on your income and expenses. Pre-approval is the same process, but goes one step further. The lender doing the verifications will actually approve you for a loan, subject to your finding an appropriately priced property. In today’s market, rates are low, so a fixed rate mortgage is the best way to go for most buyers. Keep in mind that the payment you arrange to make should probably not be the largest you’re qualified for. Determine an amount you’ll feel comfortable paying. You may qualify for a higher payment that your lifestyle will support. Once you know the price range for which you qualify, it’s time to start looking at homes. Many people are more comfortable looking at homes online to start with. National sites such as Realtor.com are good, as well as more local sites like zadelrealty.com can help you get a good idea of the local market. Once you have a basic idea, the most efficient way to do this is to sit down with your Realtor and discuss the homes you have found as well as your wants and needs. Make a list of the things you must have and the things you’d like to have but aren’t mandatory. Your agent can then give you information on the properties that meet your needs. If there are few homes available, your agent can counsel you on what expectations are realistic. In some markets, there are a wide variety of properties available from bank owned homes to ones that are in great shape and ready for occupancy. At other times, like the current market, there may be very little on the market, so it is necessary to make quicker decisions. Your Realtor can set up searches for you so that you are immediately notified when new home listings come on the market for your consideration. Take notes when looking at homes, and try not to look at more than four or five in the same day. Each time you look, try to keep in mind the very best property you see, and forget about the others. When you find the right home, it will then be time to write an offer. This is a legally binding contract, so make sure you understand it. Take time to read it, and get advice from a real estate attorney if you like. Address all of your concerns in the contract. Don’t assume that someone else will take care of problems. During the time between writing the offer and the closing (the date when you become the owner) much will take place. The lender will ask you for what will seem like a neverending list of items. Don’t take it personally. Lenders ask every borrower for a substantial amount of information. “I’ve relocated to my home office... You will also need to do a physical inspection Same knowledgeable, professional of the property. While anyone can do this, hiring real estate service since 1980.” a professional can be money well spent. You may not feel it necessary to reject the property due to the inspection report, but it’s still good to know what you are buying. Take the same steps with the closing as you did with the contract. Read, ask questions and understand. And finally, enjoy Call or text 303.550.5817 | greg@zadelrealty.com the pride of home ownership.
