Venerable Iron Dealer Signficantly Expands

For 63 years, Power Motive Corporation (PMC) has diligently been supporting a large and diversified customer base as the oldest Komatsu dealer west of the Mississippi with continuous ownership.

While the equipment dealer has served the needs of contractors in the confined boundaries of Colorado and southern Wyoming, that is all about to change.

This past June, the company acquired substantially all the assets of what was formerly Komatsu Southwest (or more recently known as Komatsu West). The deal makes PMC the exclusive distributor of Komatsu in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Southeast Wyoming and Far West Texas.

The transaction immediately provided Power Motive five new branches located in Farmington, Carlsbad and Albuquerque in New Mexico, along with El Paso, Texas, and Chandler, Ariz.

And this is only the beginning, according to PMC President Mac Blount.

“We’re hard at work,” he said of the opportunity the company faces going forward. “We are actively adding more branches in key markets. We are ramping up our product support capabilities and we have restructured and added additional management to fit the needs of a larger company. We are also in discussion with several manufacturers about representing their products in the additional territory. There is much to do, but we are making excellent progress.”

Infrastructure Law Turns Year

Mid-November marked the end of year one of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), and ARTBA reviewed U.S. Treasury Department data on new project starts spawned by the bill. The road and bridge construction association reports that 29,000 new projects were supported by $53.5 billion in highway and bridge formula funds leveraged at the state level.

“A key takeaway from the Treasury data is that the bipartisan infrastructure law is working in year-one as intended,” said Dr. Alison Premo Black, ARTBA chief

Thunder Creek Service, Lube Trailers Save Time, Money

Like many successful businesses, Performance Grading in Fresno, Calif., was feeling growing pains.

Ken Sherwood, who oversees vehicle maintenance, said, “Performance Grading started out with two scrapers and a couple water trucks. Now we’re up to nine scrapers, two graders, three dozers and three water trucks. He’s up to about 25 pieces now from what he had four to five years ago.” Although Sherwood chuckles when he adds “I feel good about job security.”

Since the company was making such large leaps in its equipment fleet, there needed to be new efficiency in its field service and fleet management activities. They need-

ed capacity for waste oil, but also needed the flexibility to carry oils of numerous different weights and uses. Eventually, it discovered Thunder Creek Equipment and the Service & Lube Trailer (SLT).

Initially, Performance Grading had looked at purchasing a full-blown service truck, but after understanding the benefits of the Thunder Creek SLT — and weighing it against the disadvantages of a larger service truck — Performance Grading made its choice.

“At the time, the owner was considering a truck,” said Sherwood. “If you go that route, you're paying wages to a guy you don't need every day. Plus, the insurance and liability

on the truck is another real cost. Also, you need a guy that's got a hazmat and a CDL. The costs increase when you have a truck.”

The Thunder Creek SLT features a modular tank design that is capable of holding 440 gal. of fluid in up to eight tanks with combinations of 25, 55 and 110 gal. This can include tanks for diesel fuel, oil delivery (engine or hydraulic), used oil reclamation, grease delivery, antifreeze, DEF and other fluids based on field maintenance needs. This design allows it to be hauled without a HAZMAT endorsement and, in some configurations, without a CDL.

“We needed something that would carry enough waste oil to be able to service the

equipment, all of them, all the way down to 90, 50 weight — having all those different tanks is what we were looking for,” he said.

In addition to the owning and operating cost benefits of the trailer, and the variety of oil capacities and varieties, it’s also helped Sherwood complete service activities faster — such as knocking 15 min. off of each scraper service.

“The trailer made everything more efficient,” he said. “I’ve been able to knock off significant time from most jobs. I look at the cost of everything, but I mean 15 minutes of my time that I can spend welding or doing something else is just more cost effective.”

The capacities made possible with the SLT also have proven just right for the work Sherwood does.

“With the SLT, I can do everything on a scraper and still have engine oil left over,” he said. “Enough oil to where I can go do a 500or a 250-hour service on another piece of equipment. That’s why we went with this trailer.”

The team at Thunder Creek helped Performance Grading outfit its trailer and work with each SLT buyer to fully understand their needs and how it will be used.

“With the SLT, you put PT tags on it and you’re good,” he said. “It’s a lot cheaper than [other solutions] plus it’s a well-built trailer. It’s a hefty trailer with its construction and the way it pulls. I mean you can tell just by the amount of weight you're putting in it and then hauling it down the highway that it's not bouncing and jumping from lane to lane. It’s a well-built trailer. It’s sturdy, real sturdy.” 

Chicago Pneumatic Welcomes

Ebbert Pacific in Southwest

Chicago Pneumatic has announced Ebbert Pacific as a new Manufacturers Representative in the west region of the United States — encompassing Northern California and Northern Nevada territories — effective immediately.

Ebbert Pacific will carry Chicago Pneumatic air compressors and tools and distribute to businesses and end users in the local market. Ebbert Pacific takes pride in providing expertise on best-in-class manufacturers, focusing on the construction and safety markets.

Along with bringing products to wholesale and retail distributors, Ebbert Pacific delivers competence and safety trainings in the Northern California — like fall protection rules and regulations, equipment inspections and hazard recognitions.

“Ebbert Pacific prides itself on safety and quality, which also represents who we are at CP,” said Chet Cushing, Southwest Regional sales manager of Chicago Pneumatic. “We’re looking forward to having them be a part of

our team.”

Ebbert Pacific helps companies keep their employees safe with training in the field — not just the classroom. Ebbert Pacific’s team can cover ladder and fall protection, PPE training, heat stress and first aid trainings.

With Chicago Pneumatic products, Ebbert Pacific is looking to engage contractors within the pipeline, road and bridge segments.

“Chicago Pneumatic products are the perfect fit in rounding out our end user product profile,” said Trevor Ebbert, president of Ebbert Pacific Company. “While being already entrenched in the electrical and mechanical trades, our partnership with CP brings Ebbert Pacific a line to more aggressively engage engineering contractors, with their emphasis in pipeline, road, and bridge building.”

Backed by decades of experience, Ebbert Pacific has provided best-in-class offerings to manufacturers and distributors since 1984.

Southwest Empire to Acquire Cashman Equipment Company

Cashman Equipment Company, founded by James Cashman Sr. during the construction of Hoover Dam in 1931, announced that it will be acquired by its neighboring Cat dealer to the south, Empire Southwest of Arizona, at the end of December 2022.

“During our long tenure of 91 years, our team has grown to more than 1,100 highly talented and dedicated employees, partnering with our customers to find the best solutions for their business needs,” the company said.

Cashman Equipment expanded from southern Nevada to include most of northern Nevada and portions of several California border counties in the early 1960s. Cashman has been led over these nine decades by James Cashman Sr., James Cashman Jr., James Cashman III and most recently, during the last 27 years, by MaryKaye Cashman.

Cashman is one of the most successful and highly respected Cat dealerships in

North America today, supplying machinery, service, parts, power generation, pumps and rental options, across the full Cat product line, the company said.

“We are pleased and confident knowing that our customers will continue to receive superior support for all their construction, mining, landscaping and industrial needs from Empire Southwest, as we know they share our values and commitment to providing the best customer experience,” the company said.

“Going forward, we are confident that the combination of these two great companies will provide new synergies, great customer satisfaction and very importantly, even more options and enhanced capabilities.”

Empire Southwest also is a third generation, family-owned business, and was founded in 1950.

Skanska

Focus On

Diversity Program

Skanska USA, a global construction and development firm, has appointed Joycelyn Yue as national director of supplier diversity for its building operations, revitalizing and sharpening focus on the company’s leadership in this space.

In this role, Yue will lead the U.S. building operation’s national supplier diversity team of professionals located in 23 offices and will partner with regional and national leadership to further develop and elevate the company’s Supplier Diversity Compliance program. Yue is based Los Angeles, Calif.

“Skanska’s mission to build for a better society includes maximizing opportunities for small and diverse suppliers and connecting with the communities where we build. Joy brings to Skanska a wealth of experience in supplier diversity and community engagement, along with a passion for diversity and inclusion,” said Jeff Cruz, Skanska ethics and compliance officer. “We are thrilled to have Joy join and lead our supplier diversity team.”

In addition to the hiring of Yue, Rita Ohaya, Johnny Ortiz and Marcus Thompson have been promoted to the role of regional director of supplier diversity, joining current regional director, Donna Licciardi. Each will have overall responsibility for a region within the supplier diversity program while focusing greater emphasis on subcontractor development, community engagement, and outreach.

Emily Madero and Enzo Mungu also have joined the supplier diversity team in the newly created role of supplier diversity compliance manager.

Yue joined Skanska from Southern California Edison where she served as supplier diversity senior program manager responsible for developing, managing and executing supplier diversity programs in compliance with California Public Utilities Commissions’ General Order 156, designed to facilitate the inclusion, development, and outreach of small and diverse businesses. Previously she was director of programs for the Southern California Supplier Development Council.

Power Motive Makes Presence Felt With Five-State Footprint

POWER from page 1

Part of a Master Plan

Blount explained the rationale behind the dramatic expansion.

“We feel that the acquisition has many geographic, transportation and customer benefits,” he said. “Leveraging the I25 corridor, which flows through a big part of our territory, we can achieve greater market penetration, stronger customer adoption, better centralized inventory management and expanded serviceability opportunities.”

The expansion fits nicely with a larger corporate vision adopted back in 2019.

“This acquisition is very much in line with our vision framework developed several years ago,” said Blount. “It started with discovering a sound set of beliefs and establishing meaning towards the type of progress we want to achieve. Our vision framework consists of core ideologies and an envisioned future. We believe the result of this work will have a profound and positive impact on shaping our company culture and contributing to the overall success of the organization.”

As part of the core ideologies, Blount identified those core values as “Safety, People, Integrity, Commitment and Service Excellence.”

“Once we established our core values and what was truly important to us, we established our core purpose — Champion a productive environment that stimulates unity, balance and growth while upholding a commitment to building successful partnerships and better futures.”

According to Blount, everything the company does needs to conform to both its values and purpose.

“Everything centers around our core ideologies and every major business decision must be absolutely aligned,” he said. “We all take this very seriously and committed to hiring like-minded people that share our values and passion about serving our customers.”

Restructuring Management

The now, much larger company, has required a change in management structure and additional resources, according to

Blount.

He said the dealership will be split into three regions:

• The North Region will include all of PMC’s original territory of Colorado and Wyoming;

• The Central Region will cover the state of New Mexico and Far West Texas including El Paso area; and

• The South Region encompassing all of Arizona.

Chris Wilkes recently joined PMC as vice president of sales and marketing and will oversee the sales functions in all regions.

Wilkes said he is excited about the challenge, after moving to Power Motive from an East Coast Komatsu dealer.

“This is a dream opportunity for me, to be involved with building Power Motive, Komatsu and all of our other OEM partnerships in this huge territory,” he said.

He added that Arizona will be the first to see significant physical changes at the branch facility level.

“We will eventually have a minimum of four branches in Arizona,” he said. “Metro Phoenix requires a branch on both the east and west sides to properly serve our customers. Then, we’ll also work toward establishing a branch in northern Arizona and the Tucson area.”

In addition, regional vice presidents have been appointed for the two new regions. Tim Albright will head up the Central Region from Albuquerque while Dan Burget, based in Phoenix, will be responsible for the Southern Region.

Not Just Komatsu

“The opportunity to grow our footprint with best-in-class manufacturers is something we have always had an interest in doing,” Blount said. “And because our entire territory is contiguous, we are confident that we can represent and support these products much more effectively

In addition to Komatsu, PMC will represent Superior Broom, Terramac and JLG over its entire footprint, along with consistent representation of premiere attachment manufacturers.

In New Mexico, PMC has added the Roadtec and Sakai product lines. Bomag paving and compaction equipment will be offered in Arizona.

Blount said PMC is in active discussion with other manufacturers that could further fill out its product lines in one or more regions. As in the case with Komatsu, PMC is interested in partnering with additional manufacturer lines that share in their belief of service excellence.

“We understand our niche,” Blount said. “We operate in the utility, construction, mining, roads and aggregates segments. A new line must fit into our niche and have the capacity to provide us with the superb support for our end users.”

Report: States Jumpstart 25K Projects in ILJA’s First Year

States leveraged their fiscal year 2022 federal highway formula funds to jumpstart nearly 25,000 new improvement projects in communities across America during the first year of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), a review of U.S. Treasury Department data through Aug. 31 shows.

“A key takeaway from the Treasury data is that the bipartisan infrastructure law is working in year one as intended, with state transportation departments disbursing their funds and projects breaking ground,” said American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Chief Economist Alison Premo Black, who reviewed and compiled the data for the report.

“The economic and quality of life benefits of the infrastructure law will become more even more apparent as funding continues in coming years,” added ARTBA Chair Paula Hammond, a WSP USA senior vice presi-

dent. “The beneficiaries of these long-term investments will be the American traveling public in their communities.”

President Joe Biden signed the IIJA into law Nov. 15, 2021. Nearly 90 percent of IIJA’s highway funds are dispersed by existing formula to states, with the remainder distributed through discretionary grant awards and other allocated programs.

The 20 largest IIJA projects supported by formula funds to date are:

1. Texas — Expanding Loop 1604 on I10 in San Antonio; $291 million

2. Texas — 635 East Project in Dallas; $225 million

3. New York — Van Wyck Expressway Capacity & Access Improvements to and from JFK International Airport; $211 million

4. Arizona — Roadway Widening on I17 Split; $200 million

5. Texas — I-35 Widening in Travis

County; $192 million

6. South Carolina — Phase 1 Carolina Crossroads I-20/26/126 Corridor Improvement Project; $145 million

7. Ohio — I-70/71 Downtown Ramp Up Project in Columbus; $123 million

8. California — Rehabilitation of Pomona Freeway between the Long Beach and San Gabriel River Freeways; $121 million

9. California — Route 46 Corridor Improvement Project in San Luis Obispo; $119 million

10. Illinois — Interchange Reconstruction and Bridge Replacement on I-57 at I-74 Interchange in UrbanaChampaign; $107 million

11. Georgia — State Road 2/State Road 515 Roadway Reconstruction Project in Northern Georgia; $104 million

12. California — State Route 55 Improvements Project in Orange County; $101 million

13. California — Rehabilitation of Route 10 Near Coachella; $100 million

14. Tennessee — Interchange

Modification on I-55 at Crump Boulevard in Memphis; $99.6 million

15. Texas — Widen Loop 375 in El Paso; $95 million

16. New Jersey — Route 18 Drainage and Pavement Rehabilitation in East Brunswick; $91.7 million

17. Tennessee — Improvements at I-75, I-24 Interchange near the Tennessee-Georgia Border;- $91.2 million

18. South Carolina — Phase 2 Carolina Crossroads I-20/26/126 Corridor Improvement Project; $90 million

19. California — SAC 5 Corridor Enhancement Project in Sacramento; $88 million

20. Texas — Irving Interchange Project in Dallas; $80 million

ARTBA has created a digital tool, artbahighwaydashboard.org, to provide national and state-by-state information on the projects and more specifics on how IIJA funds are being invested. The association is sharing this resource with members of Congress and their staffs, and with administration officials.

PMC Dealerships Will Be Split Into Three Separate Regions

POWER from page 16

through a couple of ownership changes before full transfer of ownership to Bill Blount in 1980. Blount started out as a sales representative at the company in 1972 but eventually went on to become PMC’s third owner. In 2002, the company provided opportunities for ownership to key employees. Currently, the company has 15 active employees that have a personal stake in growing the business and taking care of their customers. Blount credits the company’s ownership structure in providing a competitive edge in the marketplace “It has allowed us to recruit talented and hardworking people that are incentivized to make business decisions that allow us to maintain strong and health relationships with our clients,” he said.

When the company first started, it only had one location, in Denver, Colo. Over the next few decades, PMC would go on to add five more Colorado locations in Grand Junction, Colorado Springs, Milliken and Durango and another location in Cheyenne, Wyo.

When the company started, it was a Massey Ferguson dealer catering mostly to the agriculture sector. As the Colorado economy diversified, so did Power Motive and evolved into a utility, construction and mining distributor. The company’s relationship with Komatsu began in 1975 and it has strategically added complimentary lines ever since.

Mac Blount joined the company in 2001 and served in a variety of roles, spanning all aspects of the business including product support, rental, sales, sales management and

president role in 2016.

PMC retained the services of all the employees in the Komatsu Southwest transaction and currently has over 280 employees while rapidly expanding its personnel each week.

Bright Future

committed team at PMC and are driven to accomplish great things. We have strong relationships with our vendor relationships and looking forward to growing their market

presence in the additional territory.”

When asked about his thoughts on market share, Blount said, “it’s a measurement of what I view to be a company-wide reflection of the collective work that we do, our goal is more focused on doing the right type of activities that lead to long term sustainable market share growth, and that begins with enhancing and expanding our product support capabilities in the new territory.”

To demonstrate the company’s commitment to support, Blount shared a list of activities consisting of technician hiring, real estate projects and other investments the company is pursuing.

“Our vision framework provides us with an excellent roadmap which will lead us to significant growth, employee fulfillment and customer satisfaction,” he said, with a softspoken, yet confident tone. “Acquiring Komatsu Southwest was an excellent opportunity that the company pursued primarily because it was perfectly aligned with our company vision framework and positions us much better to achieve our envisioned future.”

Considering his track record of success, there’s no reason to think PMC, Blount and his talented, focused team won’t reach their ambitious goals and, perhaps, even a few more.  CEG

Hamm Unveils Compactors in HC Series for Earthworks

Hamm is presenting new compactors in the HC series for earthworks. Due to a platform strategy, the compaction specialist fulfills the specific requirements regarding national legislation across the world.

The models for Europe, North America and the other EPA Tier III and EU Stage V/EPA Tier IV markets offer high compaction power, a sustainable machine design, as well as exemplary ergonomics and comfort. What’s more, these compactors are already “digital-ready” due to a variety of interfaces, and are therefore fit for the digital construction site of the future.

One Platform For All Markets

The newly developed HC series from Hamm is replacing the compactors from the 3000 series and H series. The manufacturer has developed a uniform platform, offering models with an operating weight from 24,251 to 55,116 lbs. globally. The drum width on all models is 84.3 in.

The power of the diesel engine is 85 to 160 kW, depending on the weight. A new frame concept creates more tank volume. The compactors can therefore hold up to 88.8 gal. of fuel.

Hamm is opening up an unusually wide spectrum of applications due to options such as the dozer blade in various sales variants and a vibration plate. Hamm has the C models in all weight classes in its range for uses in difficult, steep terrain. Their gradeability is significantly increased due to an improved drum gear, improved hydrostatic drive, automatic Traction Control and a no-spin axle.

Great Power, Economical in Continuous Operation

Due to new approaches in machine management, the HC series achieves increased overall performance, while also making savings.

The HAMMTRONIC and integrated ECO mode ensure that the rollers work as often as possible in the economical partial-load range. The speed is reduced for this — but, due to a large travel pump and electronic hill-start assist, this is achieved without compromising the power.

Overall, this concept saves fuel and reduces the noise and exhaust gas emissions. With the optional automatic engine stop, the energy consumption can be reduced even further, the manufacturer said.

New Front Vehicle, Greater Steering Angle

A new design for the front vehicle and scraper provides significantly increased clearance at the drum. This prevents material accumulations, meaning that cleaning work is correspondingly seldom required.

For the steering, a new cast articulated joint with articulated joint lock allows for a greater steering and swing angle with improved kinematics. In addition, due to the optimized weight distribution in combination with the Traction

On the compactors with open platform, drivers benefit from modified guiding of cooling air for the engine: Fresh air is taken in from above behind the operator’s platform and the hot exhaust air is discharged via the machine’s rear end, meaning the heated air does not hinder the driver.

Great Visibility During Day, Night

Due to this design, Hamm has improved visibility even further. Here, the design of the engine hood with a view channel in particular allows for a clear view to the rear. When it’s dark, the optionally installable 10-way lighting with economical LED lights ensures sufficient light in all work situations.

The exterior rear-view mirrors are installed to be low-vibration and can be adjusted from the operator’s platform. An additional mirror with proximity detection improves the view of the immediate environment.

After switching off the machine, the Coming Home function provides additional safety as the light remains switched on for a brief period before the spotlights are deactivated automatically.

Equipped for Digital Construction Site

Control, the gradeability is increased.

Hamm also is making improvements to the compaction force: The centrifugal force is increased by up to 15 percent in comparison with previous models, and the static linear load is as high as 451.6 lbs/in.

Comfortable Workstation

Hamm has increased the high level of operator comfort in the cab yet further with numerous storage compartments, over 20 percent more tread and around 30 percent more volume, less vibration load and a reduced noise level.

A new heating and air-conditioning system, the Easy Drive operating concept, the comfortable steering as well as a modern ventilation design round off the comfort offered by well-conceived construction machinery. Furthermore, Hamm offers new special equipment for seat rotation increased by 70 degrees.

There also is the option to incorporate an auxiliary heater.

The HC series is well-prepared for the quality and communication requirements of the future. The “Smart Doc” app, which was developed by Hamm, graphically displays all of the key compaction parameters as well as the compaction progress, and logs the measured rigidity as well as the position data. Due to this app, even inexperienced drivers can immediately see which areas have been sufficiently compacted and which areas still require compaction.

Hamm also already offers the option of integrating systems for avoiding collisions with a PDS (proximity detection system) interface. Furthermore, the process data can be communicated to third-party systems via a standardized interface.

Maintenance With JDLink Telematics System

Hamm offers the JDLink telematics system for maintenance and servicing, but also for applications planning. It visualizes the performance data of the rollers in a compact overview in real time. In addition to live data such as fuel consumption, fill levels or engine load, position data, error messages and service intervals also can be called up at any time and from any location.

Wirtgen Unveils AutoTrac for Cold Recyclers, Soil Stabilizers

In view of growing demands for environmentally compatible processes, the need for responsible handling of valuable resources is also increasing in the areas of soil stabilization and cold recycling.

Cost-effective realization of these processes is only possible when they are efficiently executed. With the launch of the AutoTrac system for the WR series, Wirtgen now offers a technology that focuses precisely on this.

Pioneering Technology for Soil Stabilization, Cold Recycling

Soil stabilizers are used, for example, for resource-efficient preparation of road beds in the course of infrastructure projects. A sub-base with insufficient load bearing capacity is transformed into resilient ground that can withstand heavier loads.

This process takes the existing soil material and simply adds and mixes in binding agents such as cement and/or lime.

In the case of cold recycling with WR series machines, damaged asphalt layers are milled and resized in a single operation, re-bound by the addition of binding agents and water and then repaved. New base layers produced in-place by this process are characterized by their extremely high load bearing capacity.

Automatic Steering System for Optimal Overlaps

By enabling precise, automatic steering, the AutoTrac system helps Wirtgen wheeled recyclers to achieve greater

process efficiency and, as a result of this, a high degree of environmental compatibility. It steers the machine accurately within tolerances of a few centimeters on the basis of a previously calculated reference strip and a specified overlap of adjacent strips, which enables consistent utilization of the machine’s ideal working width.

AutoTrac relies, among other things, on various global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) for precise determination of the machine’s position and direction of travel. The system is operated from an additional control panel that also enables the operator to view information about the position of the machine and previously completed strips.

Leverage Savings Potentials, Increase Process Quality

If one considers the sum of the large, avoidable overlaps with neighboring strips that can occur in manual operations, and the corresponding wastage of resources, the potential savings the system can bring soon become clear, according to the company.

Adhering to the pre-set overlaps reduces the consumption of binding agents, consumables, and fuel, makes the carbon footprint smaller and shortens the project completion time. The consequence of this is increased process efficiency and, at the same time, cost-effectiveness and environmental compatibility.

Manual steering of the machine always requires considerable effort when it comes to avoiding unprocessed gaps in the ground being worked. Here too, the automatic steering system assists the operator and reduces the workload.

Maintaining the desired overlap avoids unwanted gaps in the final results. The operator or driver can concentrate entirely on the mixing process and keeping an eye on what’s going on around the machine.

Wirtgen Introduces Comfort Cabin for Compact Machines

At the beginning of 2022, Wirtgen celebrated the market launch of its completely redesigned generation of compact milling machines. And now, the company presents another innovation. Alongside efficiency and environmental compatibility, the focus is now set on ergonomics again. For the first time, compact class machines can be fitted

with a comfort cabin.

The operator’s cabin for the W 100 Fi – W 130 Fi models sets new standards when it comes to ergonomics. It offers the operator a comfortable, low-fatigue workplace and provides effective protection against noise emissions. At the same time, the cabin protects the operator when working in all

weather conditions —no matter whether it’s windy, raining, cold or sunny and hot.

The cabin air is cleaned by a filter system and the temperature is controlled by an automatic air conditioning and heating system. The cabin also is constructed as a positivepressure system to prevent the ingress of dirt, dust, and hazardous materials into the operator’s workplace. Regardless of the weather conditions, the operator’s workplace always stays dry and clean, also when transporting the machine.

Low-Fatigue Working Environment Promotes Better Concentration

The increased comfort and lower impact of environmental influences inside the cabin effectively reduce stress and fatigue.

The cabin offers the operator an attractive working environment with modern control elements and assistance systems that are unique in this class. This assures that important factors that contribute to safety and productivity, such as concentration and physical or mental capabilities, are

not impaired in any way.

The consequences of this are motivated operators, job satisfaction and maximum occupational health and safety. All in all, the best prerequisites for making every day a productive working day, Wirtgen said.

Problem-Free Communication

The comfort cabin for compact milling machines also shows another of its unique strengths when it comes to communication.

The ambient noise level is so low that the operator can make hands-free phone calls from the cabin. For communication on the construction site, the operator can either use a radio headset or open the easily accessible side window to talk with the crew on the ground.

Enclosed Cabin Prevents Vandalism

When closed and locked, the operator’s cabin and all control elements are securely protected against vandalism. There is no longer any need to remove and stow protection covers or open up fold-away control panels at the start of work or vice versa at the end of the working day.

New

Vögele Introduces Newest Lineup of SUPER Pavers

Road construction companies are equipped for the future with Vögele’s latestgeneration SUPER 1900-5(i) and SUPER 2100-5(i) road pavers and AB 500 and AB 600 extending screeds.

Highway Class pavers are perfectly at home whether on highways or handling other demanding large-scale projects. The SUPER 1900-5(i) manages pave widths between 8.2 and 37.8 ft; the SUPER 21005(i) up to 46 ft.

Both Dash 5 pavers are convincing products featuring a flexible, modular system which takes particular account of economy and sustainability as well as of ease of use and process automation.

More Convenience, Safety for Users

Vögele has made user requirements a key focus of development, resulting in further optimization of the ErgoPlus operating concept which, with its touchscreen and smartphone shelf, delivers even greater convenience for digital road construction.

The new Paver Access Control (PAC) function enables Dash 5-generation pavers to be equipped for work on the job site more quickly, more conveniently and more safely. The control unit positioned on the screed allows all the initial steps — such as switching on lights, starting the diesel engine, booting up the machine control system, putting up the hardtop and locking it in position, as well as lowering the screed — to be performed safely and conveniently from ground level.

This promotes safety and saves time, as the paver operator cannot forget to lock the hardtop in position and can start heating the screed as soon as he has arrived on the paver

operator's platform.

The combination of PAC and Light Package Plus provides additional convenience and safety. The integrated lighting provides even illumination of the whole working area. As the lighting is permanently integrated in the hardtop design, it is not necessary to transport separate lights to the job site and fit them there.

Into Future With Automation

The automation of processes has been intensified in the SUPER 1900-5(i) and SUPER 2100-5(i) road pavers using assistance and control systems.

Process automation not only prevents paving errors, it considerably increases efficiency as well as paving quality. Examples of this are AutoSet Plus, already tried and tested in the market, as well as two new Niveltronic Plus functions, Assist and Edge Control.

The AutoSet Plus feature of the Dash 5 generation simplifies handling even further and new functions have been added.

Niveltronic Plus Assist helps the paver operator pave the road accurately in predefined cross-sectional profiles. Paving parameters can be entered on the display and the progress of construction monitored accordingly.

Edge Control now also makes it possible to control screed width, as well as to steer along a tensioned wire. The physical reference is detected with the aid of a sonic sensor for this purpose. Measurement of screed width in the hydraulic cylinders delivers a precise position signal for what in future will be fully automatic screed width control on For more information, visit www.wirtgengroup.com.

Isuzu Motors America Promotes Pollack to Manage Diesel Distributor Network

Isuzu Motors America LLC PowerTrain Division announced the promotion of Russel Pollack to executive manager, distributor sales and business development. The appointment was made by Ken Martin, executive director, sales and SCM.

“In his new role, Russ will be responsible for managing the Isuzu Diesel Distributor network and the internal sales team supporting this activity. This assignment adds to his existing responsibilities of business development and power unit program management,” said Martin.

“I’m excited to expand my responsibilities working closer with our distribution network to now include managing our distributor sales team,” said Pollack. “I believe our distributor enhancement program has been a positive impact for our distribution base, expanding areas of responsibility with performing organizations and streamlining the sales and enhancement program under one divisional umbrella will also be a great advantage moving forward.”

“In addition, Bob Links will continue as executive manager, OEM sales, in both streamlining OEM sales processes and heightening sales training activities for the sales team,” said Martin.

“Sales training is something I really enjoy doing,” said Links. “I am very excited to develop the Isuzu Diesel sales training modules and working, both internally with Isuzu people and with our distributors and OEMs, to improve the Isuzu sales process. Working with the large OEMs has and will continue to be something I enjoy and look forward to doing. I will work very closely with Russ and his team, and our distributors, to ensure we move Isuzu sales efforts together as one team.”

ConExpo-Con/AGG, already recognized as the largest trade show in North America, has officially sold all available exhibit space, guaranteeing the 2023 edition of the show will be the biggest in history.

“The addition of the new West Hall and Diamond Lot at the Las Vegas Convention Center gave us, and our exhibitors, a number of new opportunities to show how we are taking the construction industry to the next level,” said ConExpo-Con/AGG Show Director Dana Wuesthoff. “Now at 2.8 million square feet of exhibits, there’s more for construction pros to see than ever before.”

The show, now nearly 5 percent bigger than the record set in 2020, will feature 1,800 exhibitors and 150 education sessions during its run from March 14 to 18, 2023.

Despite being the largest ConExpoCon/AGG ever, recent additions to the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC)

will make it the easiest to get around as well. Beneath the entire LVCC campus runs the Convention Center Loop, an underground transportation system designed by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company that transports convention attendees throughout the campus in under two minutes in Tesla vehicles, free of charge.

“We are excited to welcome ConExpo-Con/AGG back to Las Vegas for another record-setting event,” said Brian Yost, chief operating officer of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), which owns and operates the LVCC. “The addition of the West Hall and the Convention Center Loop will only further enhance the ‘Only Vegas’ experience for attendees and exhibitors.”

Construction pros are ready for the show to return as well. The current pace of attendee registration is nearly double what it was at this time for the 2020 show.

“This is the event that construction professionals, especially those making company-level decisions, and those needing professional development hours, can’t miss,” said ConExpoCon/AGG Show Chair and Caterpillar Senior Vice President Phil Kelliher.

“Seeing the new equipment and techniques on a screen doesn’t compare to seeing it all in person. At the show, you can see the equipment, ask questions of the manufacturers themselves, and really understand what the equipment and education can do for your career and business.”

Registration for ConExpoCon/AGG and IFPE is currently 30 percent off with code MEDIA30. Construction and fluid power pros should get their badges before Jan. 6, 2023, to get that discount and have a better pick of hotel accommodations.

LICA Educational Foundation for Veterans Names Eddy S. Mayen as Exec. Director

The Land Improvement Contractors of America (LICA) Educational Foundation for Veterans announced that Eddy S. Mayen has assumed the role of its executive director.

The Foundation’s mission is to train military veterans to become highly skilled heavy equipment operators for the construction industry. Mayen himself is a veteran of the U.S. Army, enlisted as an active duty artillery soldier, then serving in the New Jersey National Guard and achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

Mayen’s grant experience includes nine years at the New Jersey Department of State as Director of the State Trade Expansion Program (STEP), which awarded $7 million to New Jersey small businesses. He then served as National Director of the STEP grant program at the U.S. Small Business Administration headquarters in Washington, D.C.

“Eddy is a great communicator and uniquely qualified to take on this leadership role on behalf of the Foundation,” said the organization’s founder, Gerald Biuso Sr.

“I first became acquainted with him through the New Jersey chapter of LICA. Not only is he a military veteran; he has also worked extensively in grant-writing and has experience in land improvement.”

The LICA Foundation has applied

for grant funds to be awarded by the American Rescue Plan Good Jobs Challenge. The grant program, sponsored by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), has as its goal helping underserved Americans find good-paying jobs through partnerships with employers in

that will be provided by LICA contractors, equipment dealers and subcontractors.

“In the military, there is no such thing as light equipment,” Mayen said. “It’s a natural career move for veterans to transition to the heavy equipment industry. They’re accustomed to working independently while being part of a team, and have already been thoroughly trained to follow instructions, pay attention to detail, be great problemsolvers and constantly safety-conscious.”

LICA members are committed to the mission by helping prepare veteransfor the workforce, providing good-paying jobs and offering flexibility with the challenges they may face when transitioning into civilian life.

need of trained workers. Mayen wrote the Foundation’s grant proposal, outlining how it will develop an ongoing pipeline of highly skilled heavy equipment operators to help fill the thousands of existing open jobs, while supporting our nation’s veterans.

The Foundation will work with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to identify candidates to participate in a comprehensive equipment training program. The curriculum includes simulator training on heavy equipment operation and safety protocols before advancing to field training

“My role as executive director of the LICA Educational Foundation for Veterans isn’t just a job,” said Mayen. “It’s a personal mission. I immigrated to the U.S. as a child, and I want my children to understand how good this country is, how important it is to me. economist. State transportation departments are “disbursing their funds and projects breaking ground.”

The numbers represent nearly 90 percent of IIJA’s highway funds, dispersed by existing formula to states.

The remainder, according to ARTBA, are distributed through discretionary grant awards and other allocated programs.

Tracking Progress, Projects

“The economic and quality of life benefits of the infrastructure law will become even more apparent as funding continues in coming years,” the association said.

ARTBA is tracking the number and location of these construction projects on its Highway Dashboard, launched at the IIJA one-year mark.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) also is tracking IIJA projects, in partnership with Accelerator for America.

The map features projects getting under way with IIJA funding, which the associations reports has been steadily making its way to state and local agencies across the nation.

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is improving communities large and small,” said Maria Lehman, ASCE president. “But many Americans aren’t aware of how this law will impact their day-to-day lives.”

She said the mapping tool will show families how traffic along their morning commutes is going to be alleviated, why they’re experiencing less interruptions in energy services, or why their tap water will be safer to drink.

“Not only will these projects improve our quality of life, but we hope they also inspire the next generation of civil engineers to be a part of solving some of society’s most complex problems.”

All 17 infrastructure categories in ASCE’s Report Card for America’s Infrastructure are touched by the IIJA, according to the association.

The report card, which gave U.S. infrastructure a grade of ‘C-’, and the map are part of ASCE’s efforts to track all infrastructure investments and rulemakings by sector.

White House’s Perspective

At the IIJA one-year mark, President Joe Biden’s White House called it “a once-in-a-generation investment in our nation’s infrastructure and competitiveness.”

The Biden-Harris Administration “is already following through on its promise to deliver results by rebuilding our roads, bridges, ports and airports.”

Touting IIJA’s historic progress, the White House claims it is the largest and most significant investment in rebuilding our roads and bridges since President Eisenhower’s Interstate Highway System. It represents the largest investment in public transit and transit accessibility in American history and the biggest investment in passenger rail since Amtrak’s inception, as well as the greatest investment in clean water, affordable internet, environmental justice, clean energy and resistance to climate change.

It also claims clean, electric buses for school and transit fleets; an EV charging grid and the largest investment in domestic manufacture of batteries.

Specifically, almost 3,000 bridge repair and replacement projects have launched across the country.

The bill spawned funding for more than 5,000 new clean transit and school buses, according to the Biden administration.

The DOT and FHWA announced some $120 billion in federal highway apportionments for highways and bridges for fiscal years 2022 and 2023.

The Federal Railroad Administration outlined major backlog projects that will get funding.

The DOT awarded $1.5 billion in 26 highway, multimodal freight and rail projects to shore up the nation’s transportation systems, eliminate supply chain bottlenecks and improve critical freight movements.

USDOT also announced $2.2 billion in Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grants for 166 projects.

These projects will allow urban and rural communities to move forward on projects that modernize roads, bridges, transit, rail, ports and intermodal transportation.

They’ll also make U.S. transportation systems “safer, more accessible, more affordable, and more sustainable,” according to the White House.

More than $20.4 billion in Fiscal Year 2022 is earmarked for transit funding, and another $4.45 billion recommended through the Capital Investment Grants program.

Almost $2 billion in awards is set to help transit agencies, states and territories purchase low- and no-emission transit buses and upgrade facilities.

“These awards will help communities across the country purchase more than 1,800 new buses and double the number of clean transit buses on America’s roads,” said the Biden administration.

The EPA awarded about $1 billion in clean school bus rebates to nearly 400 school districts.

The grants will help school districts purchase more than 2,400 clean school buses.

The DOT announced $1.75 billion to improve transit accessibility across the country as part of the department’s new All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP). The program will help transit agencies update subway and rail stations built before passage of the ADA.

The first $343 million to make subway and rail stations more accessible was released this summer.

The FAA earmarked $3 billion for 3,075 to upgrade critical airport infrastructure nationwide. The agency also

announced a $1 billion in awards to 85 airports across the country to modernize airport terminals.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) set almost $4 billion to strengthen supply chains and improve waterways.

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) also announced more than $700 million to fund 41 port projects to improve our nation’s port infrastructure.

The GSA awarded more than $3 billion to modernize 26 land ports of entry across the northern and southern borders.

The investments will improve commerce and trade; enhance border security; create good-paying construction jobs; incorporate new and innovative sustainability features; and provide for improved climate resilience, the agency said.

Work has begun, and GSA also has completed seven port paving projects using low-carbon asphalt and concrete specifications.

The contracts for these paving projects were awarded to and completed by women-owned, small or disadvantaged businesses.

Electric vehicle infrastructure deployment plans have been deployed for all 50 States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

All states now have access to funding totaling more than $1.5 billion to help build EV chargers covering approximately 75,000 miles of highway across the country.

The Joint Office of Energy & Transportation was formed to focus on building the national charging network.

The EPA announced more than $9 billion to upgrade aging water infrastructure, sewerage systems, pipes and service lines. The EPA’s State Revolving Fund programs include targeting resources to disadvantaged communities, making rapid progress on lead-free water for all and tackling dangerous chemicals

The USACE earmarked $200 million for environmental infrastructure projects.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) set $20 million in IIJA funds to build climate resilience in Tribal communities. The DOI announced nearly $2 billion to fulfill Indian Water Rights Settlements, $10 million for tribal water systems and

ASV Unveils Yanmar-Powered RT-50 Featuring More Power

ASV Holdings Inc., a manufacturer of allpurpose and all-season compact track loaders and skid steers, introduces a new generation of the company’s RT-50 Posi-Track loader, now powered by a Yanmar engine.

The new machine boasts 53.8 hp, up a full 8 percent from the previous model. The repowered RT-50 also offers improved serviceability, allowing owners to have the Yanmar engine serviced at ASV dealers.

In addition to these benefits, the new RT50 features new comfort, visibility and performance features, elevating the RT-50 as one of the top compact track loaders in both performance and comfort in its class, according to the manufacturer.

The Yanmar-powered RT-50 provides construction-grade performance in a small package, and is ideally suited for work in tight spaces, such as for rental, landscaping, construction, snow clearing and more.

“We often hear from customers that our RT-50 is the perfect blend of performance and mobility. Now, with the additional horsepower and new convenience features, that performance factor is dialed to eleven,” said Buck Storlie, ASV Holdings Inc. product manager. “And that’s before even mentioning the world-renowned reliability of the new Yanmar engine.”

Power, Productivity

The repowered RT-50 features a more powerful new 53.8-hp Tier IV, 3-cylinder turbo charged Yanmar engine. The machine has a high tractive effort and exceptional pushing and digging power due to ASV’s Posi-Power system.

The compact track loader allows contractors to be more productive, with high performance due in part to a nimble 58.5-in. width, a 9.1-ft. lift height, a 1,400-lbs. rated operating capacity and a 7.1 mph top speed.

The RT-50’s industry standard quick attach fits a wide variety of attachments. New to the machine is an optional hydraulic quick attach that allows operators to change attachments from the comfort of the cab. The loader’s compact size allows it to be conveniently towed behind a 1/2-ton pickup truck, a fact that makes its performance capabilities even more impressive, the manufacturer said.

Variable auxiliary hydraulic flow comes standard, and the machine can operate efficiently at a high auxiliary circuit flow rate, powered by 13.3-gpm of pump capacity and 3,000 psi of system pressure.

ASV eliminates labor-intensive belt servicing through the use of a direct drive pump. This, along with the machine’s large line sizes and hydraulic coolers, transfers more flow and pressure directly to the attachment to help prevent power loss.

The RT-50 is tested to operate at full load

100 percent of the time in ambient temperatures from -40 F up to 118 F. This product is a highly efficient cooling system that allows operators to get more out of their machine.

Serviceability, Reliability

The RT-50’s Yanmar engine can be serviced at ASV dealers. The ability to maintain the engine through ASV’s network of dealers gives customers more convenient options when engine maintenance is required on a Yanmar engine already renowned for its longevity.

ASV designed the RT-50 so operators can spend less time servicing it and more time getting work done. Its rear-tilting hood offers easy access to maintenance points, including filters, oil and fuel tank reservoirs, hydraulic and water separator drains and the battery.

The compact track loader is built with a

heavy-duty frame, drive table and axles. The RT-50 features new wiring harness routing for additional durability. The drive hose routing and chassis sealing are designed for reduced rubbing, creating fewer line breaks and boosting hose longevity. Metal-face seals on the front and back ensure the drive hubs do not require maintenance for the life of the machine. An optional bumper or bumper and limb riser can be added for additional hood protection in tough applications, such as rental or brush cutting.

ASV backs up its promise of reliability with a 2-year, 2,000-hour warranty. The warranty includes a no-derailment guarantee and covers the tracks for the entire warranty period.

Comfort, Ease of Operation

The repowered RT-50 brings brand new

comfort features to its compact cab. A single-sided lap bar makes entry and exit easier and provides operators with more hip room. Partially adjustable armrests and a tall cab improves comfort for operators of different sizes. The pressurized cab option also provides a cleaner in-cab environment.

Optional all-weather cabs include heat and air conditioning. ASV also offers additional comfort features, including a cup holder, phone mount and DC outlet.

A new 4.3-in. color display and standard hydraulic joystick controls puts full command of the machine at the operator’s fingertips. Plus, a new drive transmission allows for more precise power and fine-tuned operation.

The machine also includes visibility improvements over its predecessor. A new frameless front door includes floor-to-ceiling glass area, allowing operators to better see their work and attachments. The cab’s large side and rear windows provide additional lines of sight. This is further improved by the bright rear LED light and adjustable front pedestal lighting. An optional backup camera is available to replace the standard rearview mirror for additional convenience and visibility.

Posi-Track Benefits

ASV designs its Posi-Track and skid-steer loaders independently to provide customers with the highest performance from each machine. The RT-50’s dedicated frame results in a 14.4-in, ground clearance, higher than any walk-behind or stand-on loader, as well as many larger machines. The unit can travel over rocks, logs, stumps and other obstacles with less risk of getting hung up, according to the manufacturer.

ASV’s Posi-Track system features a flexible track and an open-rail and internal positive drive-sprocket undercarriage, allowing for greater traction, longer wear life and faster, more convenient undercarriage cleaning. Posi-Track loaders also have a high number of ground contact points, spreading the machine’s weight evenly. As a result, the RT-50 features an industry-low 3.0 psi ground pressure, reducing the risk of damage to turf.

Optional smooth turf tracks make the machine even more desirable for use on sensitive turf by minimizing risk of damage. The low ground pressure leads to better flotation and traction on steep, slippery and wet ground. It also enhances control and pushing capabilities. The wide, flexible track maintains more contact with the ground than other designs, helping to virtually eliminate the risk of track derailment.

John Deere Unveils G-Tier Compact Wheel Loader Models to Its Lineup

John Deere is building upon its lineup of compact equipment by expanding its performance tiering strategy with three new models of compact wheel loaders.

The new G-tier models, including the new 184 G-tier, and the 204 G-tier and 304 G-tier machines, were designed to include proven capabilities and are ideal for customers in need of a dependable machine to complete everyday tasks, according to the manufacturer.

The G-tier compact wheel loader models also are practically equipped, providing proven capabilities with the reliability and ruggedness customers expect from John Deere machines.

“As we learned from launching our performance tiering strategy on our utility loader line-up last year, customer’s needs are unique and they require personalized solutions to meet their diverse set of tasks,” said Luke Gribble, solutions marketing manager, John Deere Construction and Forestry Division.

“That’s why we chose to expand our performance tiering strategy with the introduction of the G-tier compact wheel loader models. These machines are not only rugged, but they boast simple and intuitive machine controls that are a great fit for operators of all experience levels, while also offering options that promote operator comfort and productivity.”

The 184, 204 and 304 G-tier compact wheel loaders provide solutions for customers in applications such as landscaping, agriculture, snow removal, site development and rental without sacrificing the world-class John Deere quality, the manufacturer said.

The G-tier models offer optimal performance with lower maintenance costs. With convenience and productivity top of mind, these easy-to-operate models come standard with limited slip differential, which automatically engages if one wheel loses traction, providing enhanced safety for the operator and the machine. The optional ride-control reduces spillage from the bucket when traveling over rough terrain, reducing job site clean-up, and improving ride quality for the operator and also can be set to engage and disengage at certain speeds.

Featured on all G-tier models, the forward-thinking cab design is offered in both a canopy or enclosed cab configuration, giving operators flexibility when working in a variety of different geographies. Built with operator visibility in mind, the redesigned enclosed cab features a frameless, fully glass door, floor-to-ceiling front windshield and remounted machine display, providing a clear line of sight to machine surroundings. The right-side full glass window also swings out 180 degrees to further enhance overall visibility for the operator.

Additional features include an adjustable steering column, slip-resistant steps and an optional LED lighting package. The spacious cab includes amenities such as improved air conditioning systems and ergonomic low-effort controls (when compared to John Deere L Series compact wheel loaders) to keep operators comfortable during a long shift.

All G-tier models offer enhanced serviceability features such as ground-level service and increased capacity fuel tanks to help simplify daily maintenance, keeping machines up and running on the job. This allows operators to spend more time completing the tasks at hand, rather than performing on-site repairs or maintenance. The strategically placed

cooling package minimizes contamination from debris build-up, optimizing efficiency and reducing cleanout time (when compared to John Deere L Series compact wheel loaders).

The smaller G-tier models, including the 184 G-tier and 204 G-tier, were designed to provide customers with a rugged, compact design helping the operator maneuver within the tightest areas while maintaining complete control of the machine. With a canopy height of 8 in. and 5 ft. 10 in. in width, these machines are nimble enough to fit through smaller barn door openings or other smaller areas, making them an ideal solution for job sites of all sizes.

The new 0.9- cu. yd. bucket is optimally sized that pairs with the 184 G-tier and 204 G-tier and can be attached to either a Quik-Tatch or hook-style coupler.

The largest of the three new models, the 304 G-tier, deliv-

In response to customer feedback, the travel speed of the 304 G-tier has increased to 18.6 mph from 12 mph, seen on the 304L model. This enhancement allows the machine to accomplish tasks and move around job sites in less time. The design of the 304 G-tier offers improved operator visibility (when compared to John Deere L Series compact wheel loaders) and overall machine stability with the increased machine size, which is now measured at 8 ft. 8 in. tall with cab and 6 ft. 5 in. wide. This compact wheel loader model also comes equipped with an optional attachment assist package, including proportional mini-joystick 3rd function control with detent, combined creep control & throttle lock, and integrated electrical attachment controls (3- Pin).

Yanmar Introduces ViO17-1E, ViO25-6B Mini-Excavators

Yanmar Compact Equipment introduces a new generation of its ViO17 and ViO25 mini-excavators.

The ViO17-1E and ViO25-6B are upgraded for improved operator comfort, convenience and ease of use while retaining Yanmar equipment’s reputation for high performance and reliability in tight spaces.

The ViO17-1E is best suited for residential work, landscaping and small general construction projects. The ViO256B also excels in those applications but brings additional power and size for benefits in building maintenance projects, irrigation, plumbing pipeline and more, according to the manufacturer.

“Operators will appreciate the upgraded features in these new generation models,” said Jeff Pate, director of sales at Yanmar Compact Equipment North America. “From improved operator comfort and lighting to enhanced attachment coupling, the improvements make long days in the cab a little easier.”

Performance

The ViO17-1E offers a 4,023-lb. operating weight and 14.5-hp engine while the ViO25-6B features a 5,908-lb. operating weight and 20.4-hp engine. Both models feature a light footprint for minimized damage to soft, delicate surfaces in landscaping, residential and sculpting applications.

Despite their small size, the models feature impressive dig depths of 7 ft. 7 in. for the ViO17-1E and 10 ft. for the ViO25-6B.

Yanmar builds the ViO17-1E and ViO25-6B with true zero tail swing technology for maximum workplace per-

formance. Zero tail swing models are designed so that no part of the cab or canopy extends beyond the track width. This helps protect both the structure the machine is working next to and the machine itself in tight spaces.

As an added benefit, the ViO17-1E has a unique, retractable undercarriage that allows operators to hydraulically extend and retract the track width. This makes it even easier for the machine to access narrow job sites. Paired with Yanmar’s diesel engines, both the ViO17-1E and ViO25-6B are made for show-stopping performance.

Efficiency

Operators will find it simple to work efficiently in the ViO17-1E and ViO25-6B due to added features such as standard PTO quick-connect fittings that allow for easier hookup or switching between attachments. For added efficiency, the upgraded LED boom light integrated into the boom can shine directly onto the work area so operators can easily see what needs to be done.

Additionally, the updated ViO17-1E and ViO25-6B have been upgraded to a four-point tie system for easier loading and unloading as well as reliable stability during transport.

To minimize operator fatigue and further improve efficiency, the ViO17-1E and ViO25-6B also include a new seat and other creature comforts such as an ergonomic throttle and better display positions for easy access. With more intuitive controls, operators also will be able to improve efficiency with less training time needed. Updated positioning for displays and switches as well as control position improve ergonomics to make operating a ViO17-1E or ViO25-6B

simpler.

For added productivity and efficiency on the job site, the ViO25-6B also includes ECO Mode, Auto-Decel Mode and auto shift 2-speed travel as standard features. ECO Mode helps extend engine life, lengthen oil change intervals and reduces fuel consumption by reducing engine speed and power draw when not needed.

The mini-excavator’s auto shift 2-speed travel design conveniently shifts the machines between low and high range automatically, making switching between jobsite tasks and longer travel times seamless for the operator.

Technology

The ViO25-6B includes SmartAssist Remote, Yanmar’s telematics system, free for five years on new machines. Using the integrated theft protection, the mini-excavator’s owner can set a range from a specific location or a starting time, triggering SmartAssist Remote to send a notification if that range is exceeded.

SmartAssist Remote also can detect errors with electronic components and send notifications to service personnel and directly to Yanmar to streamline the diagnostic process. Additionally, the machine’s owner can view the operational status of the equipment in real time and view daily work reports that track use of the excavator, useful data that can improve jobsite productivity over time.

Finally, SmartAssist Remote can track maintenance intervals and inspection items as well as notify the owner via email about upcoming maintenance requirements.

Cat E-Fence, Indicate Technologies Simplify Operation

Caterpillar introduced two new mini hydraulic excavator (MHE) Ease of Use technologies — Indicate and E-Fence — for the Cat 306 CR, 308 CR and 309 CR Next Generation mini hydraulic excavators.

New to Cat mini excavators, Ease of Use Indicate helps operators to reach grade faster, while Ease of Use E-Fence constrains machine motion to within operator preset boundaries. These technologies are ideal for digging footings, drainage and septic systems, irrigation, electric utilities, and applications near structures or obstacles operators need to avoid. They allow operators of all experience levels to work more efficiently and consistently, according to the manufacturer.

Faster Grades With Indicate

An entry-level grade system, MHE Ease of Use Indicate provides visual and audible indications to bucket position compared to target grade to assist operators in cutting to exact specifications the first time. Regardless of skill level, operators reach target grade faster with improved precision and reduced need for on-the-ground grade checking to create a safer work environment.

With Indicate, the operator selects target depth and slope from the in-cab guidance

system, and the monitor provides real-time work-in-progress and distance-to-grade feedback. The technology enables operators to reach grade faster without overcutting, saving time, manpower and saving cost overall.

Preset Boundaries With E-Fence

MHE Ease of Use E-Fence automatically constrains machine motion to within operator preset boundaries for ceiling, floor, wall and swing. Operators work confidently and efficiently by avoiding structures overhead, underground, in front, or to the left or right of the machine.

Once the E-Fence range limits are established using the machine’s touchscreen monitor, no part of the boom, stick or bucket will pass the predefined limit(s).

Setting height limits using E-Fence Ceiling helps operators avoid obstacles such as powerlines, ceilings or tree limbs. Fiber optic cables and underground utilities are protected by the defined depth limits established with E-Fence Floor. Structures in front of the machine are protected by EFence Wall, and where the mini excavator is working next to live traffic or walkways or loading trucks, E-Fence Swing is ideal to avoid these areas.

E-Fence is ideal for new operators to work within set boundaries and helps minimize job costs from repairs and downtime due to equipment damage and fines from damaging utilities or other structures. For experienced operators, E-Fence allows them

to work more efficiently and safely with fewer ground personnel required around the work area.

Both MHE Ease of Use E-Fence and Indicate are packaged with Swing Assist and Bucket Assist features at no added cost. Swing Assist, also referred to as return to trench, automatically stops machine swing at one or two set points, ideal for truck loading and trenching applications. It helps operators hit more repetitive swing targets with less effort, reducing fuel use and improving cycle times. Bucket Assist maintains last known bucket angle and keeps the cut accurate in sloping, leveling, fine grading and trenching applications.

Current production Cat 306 CR, 308 CR and 309 CR Next Gen mini hydraulic excavators are shipped from the factory Ease-ofUse-ready to reduce installation time in the field. Ease of Use Indicate and E-Fence can be ordered bundled together or as separate feature packages, installed at the factory or through Cat dealers as an upgrade kit.

These technologies are not currently available for Cat 308 CR variable angle boom, 309 CR variable angle boom, 308 CR fixed boom or canopy models.

Hitachi Introduces ZX50U-5N Compact Excavator With Full-Size Features

Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas Inc. (HCMA) announced the arrival of the ZX50U-5N excavator, a compact machine with full-size features.

With its reduced tail-swing design, the compact, yet powerful, 10,560-lb. (4,790-kg) ZX50U-5N is perfect for working in congested areas. An independent swing boom and 360-degree rotation let you set up and work almost anywhere. Plus, virtually unlimited visibility and precise control make it a great tool for excavating around existing utilities.

This excavator is a smart choice for trenching, excavating, loading trucks and other tasks in wide-open spaces, according to the manufacturer.

The ZX50U-5N offers plenty of height and reach to get up and over truck sideboards with a maximum reach of 19 ft. 7 in. (5.96 m). It also provides a maximum dig depth of 11 ft. 7 in. (3.53 m). A backfill blade allows the excavator to fill or grade while an optional all-hydraulic blade angles 25 degrees left or right, for even more efficient grading and backfilling.

Compact excavators are commonly used as tool carriers with a wide range of attachments increasing job site versatility. A standard quick-coupler-equipped, boom-mounted auxiliary line makes attachment hookup on the ZX50U-5N a snap. An auxiliary function lever (AFL) is available with an analog switch, trigger switch and horn for running attachments such as a breaker or an attachment with swing.

The ZX50U-5N allows the engine speed to be matched to the job with power/economy work modes, which are usually only available on larger excavator models. The power mode provides higher engine speeds for most general digging work, while the economy mode reduces engine speed for lighter digging jobs. This results in lower noise and decreased fuel consumption.

The excavator also uses the Hitachi Triple H (HHH) hydraulic system, which enables combined operations by adjusting the optimal flow rate for all actuators. This gives the operator the freedom to provide simultaneous control inputs with no impact on machine performance.

A Tier IV Final compliant, direct-injected Yanmar engine produces 36.3 net hp (27.1 kW) while remaining fuel efficient and impressively quiet. The engine provides a high torque level for more pull-through power.

Designed for Comfort

Just because the ZX50U-5N can squeeze into a tight space doesn’t mean the operator should. A spacious operator station has a wide entryway. Swing boom and foldable travel pedals are positioned where they are easy to operate yet allow plenty of foot room.

Ergonomic short-throw hydraulic pilot control levers provide smooth, predictable low-effort fingertip operation to reduce operator fatigue. To suit operator preference and increase productivity, control patterns can be quickly switched from backhoe- to excavator-style controls with a control-pattern selector located in a compartment beneath the seat.

An enhanced 3.5-in. LCD monitor keeps the operator informed of vital information while allowing fingertip control of several functions, including auto-shutdown and power/economy modes.

Comfort inside the spacious cab has been maximized with

an automatic, high velocity, bi-level climate-control system with automotive-style adjustable louvers to help keep the glass clear.

Durability Built In

The ZX50U-5N is built to the same durability standards as larger Hitachi excavators. Oil-impregnated HN bushings are used on the boom, arm and bucket joints for increased durability. Heavy-duty X-frames provide a rock-solid base that resists material and dirt buildup. A single-pin swing post increases the structural integrity of the digging components.

The rubber tracks on the ZX50U-5N feature a unique steel core that resists cracking. Large-diameter drive sprockets and track idlers further increase undercarriage durability.

A V-shaped cylinder guard provides added protection to the boom cylinder. To prevent damage to the upper structure, a D-section frame skirt improves upward impact resistance by 20 percent over previous models, according to the manufacturer.

Maintenance Made Easy

Compact machines can be more challenging to maintain, but not with the ZX50U-5N. A hinged door provides wideopen access to the side-by-side oil cooler and radiator core for easier cleanout. Routine checks, such as engine oil level, are quickly accomplished from ground level. A hydraulic fluid sight gauge and see-through coolant reservoir allow the operator to check at a glance.

Adjusting proper track tension only requires a grease gun and a wrench. A large fuel tank, 500- and 2,000-hour engine and hydraulic oil service, and 500-hour greasing intervals enable these excavators to work long hours between scheduled service intervals.

The operator station tilts forward 50 degrees, simplifying access to the swing motor, hydraulic control valve, engine starter motor and alternator.

To reduce the cost of repair, the traditional curved glass used in the cab has been exchanged with more easily obtainable flat glass.

Ritchie Shows Rise of Compact Earthmoving Equipment

With its November Market Trends Report, Ritchie Bros. takes a closer look at sales of earthmoving equipment in North America, including excavators, dozers, wheel loaders, skid steers and more.

One of the main trends the company is seeing is the continued rise in popularity of compact earthmoving equipment. A perfect example of this can be seen through U.S. excavator sales, where large unit volumes are down significantly in 2022, while mini excavator sales have increased.

“We have been selling construction equipment for than 60 years and compact equipment has never been more popular,” said Doug Olive, senior vice president, Ritchie Bros.

“Today, manufacturers make small and medium earthmoving equipment so much more powerful, and as a result we are seeing a lot more compact items on job sites around the world and at our auctions. However, there are still many jobs that require the full power of a Cat D11T or John Deere 870G — so don’t worry, big equipment still has a big role to play.”

In the United States, while large excavator volumes are down, prices are up. Excavator prices also are on the rise in Canada, while volumes decline. Meanwhile, volumes and

prices for mini excavators in the United States and Canada have both increased in 2022.

Looking at wheel loaders and dozer sales, we see similar trends, especially in the United States. In the United States, both have seen price declines in Q3, while smaller assets like loader backhoes and skid steer loaders have increased in price. In Canada, with smaller overall volumes, pricing for dozers and wheel loaders are still seeing a slight uptick this year, while compact equipment like multi-terrain and skid steer loaders have experienced more substantial increases.

“Used small and medium earthmoving equipment volumes sold through dealers and other retail channels were down almost 40 percent vs the prior year, while prices continued to rise, increasing a further 2 percent in October,” added Doug Rusch, managing director of Rouse Sales. “Used earthmoving equipment trading through retail channels is now selling for 33 percent more than pre-pandemic levels.”

After the main feature on earthmoving equipment, Ritchie Bros. turns to individual industry indexes. While all indexes show

increased pricing over the same time last year, month over month changes continue to decline since peak pricing earlier this year.

In the United States, Ritchie Bros.’ mixadjusted price indexes for the three months ending Oct. 31, 2022, show truck tractor prices are up approximately 2 percent compared to the same time period last year, but down 13 percent compared to the three months ending Dec. 31, 2021. Meanwhile, large and medium earthmoving equipment prices are currently up 4 percent and 2 per-

cent respectively compared to the same time period last year, however that is down 1 percent and 6 percent compared the three months ending Dec. 31, 2021.

Vocational trucks are up 1 percent YOY (down 7 percent since Dec. 2021) and aerial up 2 percent (down 5 percent since Dec. 2021).

In Canada, Ritchie Bros.’ mixadjusted price indexes for the three months ending October 31, 2022, show truck tractor prices are up approximately 13 percent compared to the same time period last year, and flat compared to the three months ending Dec. 31, 2021.

Meanwhile, large and medium earthmoving equipment prices are currently up 9 percent and 6 percent respectively compared to the same time period last year, however that is down 7 percent and 2 percent compared the three months ending Dec. 31, 2021.

Vocational trucks are up 5 percent YOY (flat compared to December 2021) and aerial up 2 percent (down 2 percent since December 2021).

sions and create jobs.

The agency also announced that nearly $725 million is available for jobs reclaiming abandoned mines, eliminating pollution from past coal mining and providing opportunities for current and former coal workers.

The IIJA reauthorized existing distributions and provided more than $11 billion over the next 15 years.

The EPA earmarked $1 billion to address the backlog of unfunded Superfund sites and accelerate cleanup at dozens of other sites. The agency also awarded $254.5 million in brownfield clean up grants to 265 communities. minerals that power everything from household appliances and electronics to clean energy technology like batteries and wind turbines.

The FCC launched the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which lowers the cost of Internet service for eligible households. The program also provides up to $100 toward the purchase of a desktop, laptop or tablet computer.

The Biden administration secured commitments from 20 leading Internet providers to offer ACP-eligible households fully covered high-speed Internet plans.

“As a result, millions of Americans can now get highspeed internet for free,” said the White House.

John Drake, vice president, transportation, infrastructure and supply chain policy, for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, had high praise for the bill.

“It will unfurl changes that will improve how we deliver critical infrastructure while also increasing investments in the roads, bridges, utilities and other critical infrastructure that benefit our economic competitiveness and our communities,” he said. “It is important to note that this investment is long-term – the funding will take time to move from Washington to project sites.”

Guidelines, rules, and application procedures for disbursements must first be crafted before funding and projects can progress across the country, he added.

“While we celebrate the one-year anniversary of IIJA, the U.S. Chamber continues to urge policymakers to take additional steps to bolster the investments made.

Taking these steps, he said, “will ensure the promise of investment is able to turn into action.”  CEG
