A portion of the $4.2 billion investment ($849.4M) that California is receiving from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) represents more than double the amount of any other state. These funds will be used to improve the nearly 1,500 bridges rated to be in “poor” condition.

As part of the Federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, California is receiving approximately $4.2 billion over five years to address the repair and replacement of highwaybridges.Thistranslatesinto$849.4million in initial funding for the five-year bridge repair program.

The bridge formula program represents the largest federal investment ever made to repair and upgrade bridges — dedicating $26.5 billion to states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico and $825 million for Tribal transportation facilities.

The$849.4millionthatCaliforniaisreceiving represents more than double the amount of any other state. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and local transportation agencies in the state will target the funds to improve the nearly 1,500 bridges rated to be in “poor” condition in the state.

The AGC of California is pleased that aging infrastructure in the Golden State will be addressed.

The DOT has expanded its Every Day Counts (EDC) program from innovative infrastructure projects to tackling climate and safety. Seven projects were added to the list of 52 the department has supported in the decade-old federal initiative program.

The goal of the Obama-era DOT program Every Day Counts was to nudge states in using innovative strategies to update their transportation systems.

Every other year, the program comes out with a new list of projects it will support. The agency has

The seven projects chosen in the latest round of the DOT’s Every Day Counts program focused on three areas: safety, sustainability and then equity and inclusion.

Tesmec Trencher Makes Its Global ImpactAround World

As the saying goes, when the going gets tough … the tough get going.

This is the reason why customers have been choosing Tesmec Trencher for their jobs in the hardest rock, not just in the United States, but globally.

Based out of Alvarado, Texas, Tesmec USA Inc. is a leader in engineering and manufacturing of large track trenchers and surface miners for oil and gas pipelines, utilities, heavy civil, renewables and mining projects.

Due to the sturdiness, high production, reliability and low CAPEX and OPEX, the Rock Hawg (RH) line of Surface Miners is witnessing an extremely high demand. Contractors from Texas to Florida, Las Vegas to Mexico, all over Australia, the Arabian Peninsula and southern Africa are turning to this highly-efficient technology to minimize cost and their environmental footprint.

Tesmec’s RH product line consists of surface miners used for crushing rock to grade and are mainly used in heavy civil jobs and mining/quarry applications. The three models that make up the product line are the 975, 1150 and 1475; each capable of being retrofitted with a chainsaw backend for utility and oil and gas pipeline construction.

While the 975 RH has proven extremely strategic for Europe’s smaller jobs, the 1150 RH and 1475 RH have been heavy hitters in the North American market for a while. The approximately 130,000 lb. 1150 RH is a favorite among heavy civil contractors who can take advantage of great production and one-load transportability. On the other hand, due to its greater performance and two-load logistics, the 1475 RH is more suited for mining/quarries or long heavy civil jobs where the machine does not have to be mobilized often.

Blasting has always been a greatly sought-after technique when the rock is too hard to excavate with conventional methods. However, the ever-changing anti-blasting laws driven by population growth and environmental concerns are fueling contractor’s interest into the Rock Hawg product line.

The highly sophisticated drum, available in 9-ft. 6-in.; 10ft. 6-in. and 13-ft. 9-in. widths, according to the model, and capable of digging up to 1-ft. 8-in. deep, allows for up-to 3-

in. minus spoil and eliminates the crushing and screening processes. On top of the financial and manpower savings, the Rock Hawg also reduces the amount of equipment on the job site.

The first Rock Hawg was commissioned in the early 2000s when Mesa Equipment of San Antonio, Texas, approached Tesmec USA Inc. Mesa Equipment had been tasked with constructing an underground garage in rocky downtown SanAntonio, but no available machine at the time was up to the task. D.A. Murray, owner and president of

Mesa Equipment, reached out to Tesmec USA Inc. for a solution to his rock issues and the 1475 RH was born.

Mesa Equipment was able to complete the job on time and has been a highly successful 1475 RH user ever since. So much so that it bought a second machine and both units are still running today. D.A. Murray had contacted “a couple of other vendors and Tesmec was the only company that stood up and committed to work with us under our requirements. Tesmec was easy to work with.”

Rock Hawg Line of Surface Miners Makes Heavy Civil Projects a Breeze

AEM: Get Smarter About Future of ElectricEquipment in Construction

Sustainability in the construction industry is being advanced by the public and private sectors. Governments are adopting more clean-air regulations at local and regional levels and companies are adopting sustainability policies and asking partners to help them meet their targets.

Consequently, many manufacturers have already developed – or are in the process of developing – electric-powered construction equipment to meet increasing emissions regulations, provide efficiency improvements, and lower operating costs. All electric, electric/hydraulic, and battery-operated versions rival their diesel and gas counterparts in performance, noted Joel Honeyman, vice president of global innovation at Bobcat.

Changing Industry

“People say electric machines are not going to perform as well as a diesel machine,” Honeyman said. “That is simply not true. In many cases they can outperform them.

TESMEC from page 8

Right next door to Mesa Equipment, Mike Sanders of Central Backhoe & Utilities, concluded that the Rock Hawg was the answer to oil pad construction in West Texas and New Mexico and proceeded with the purchase of a 1475 RH and a 1150 RH in 2019. Working on federal jobs at the U.S. border wall and countless heavy civil projects in South and Central Texas, Sanders has become one of the most prominent and knowledgeable users of the Rock Hawg technology in the Lone Star State.

Each Rock Hawg model has its place and benefits. However, heavy civil contractors seem to really like the 1150 RH due to its good performance and one-load transportability since it weighs approximately 130,000 lbs.

David Saab of SPS Pipeline, a proud owner of an 1150 RH, surely agrees after his successful project building a right-of-way for a major railroad project in the Kansas and Oklahoma flint hills.

Asimilarly inspired project also is proving a perfect match for the Rock Hawg line of surface miners: the Tren Maya. In 2021, the Mexican Government’s Tourism Fund (FONATUR) greenlit a 1,000-mi. passenger train from Campeche to Cancun, QRO and back. This massive project is crossing many states and many geological formations, with some of the main stretches being in hard limestone. Due to the proximity to live transmission lines, hotels and federal highways, blasting is not allowed.

Bernardo Romero, owner of KIIN Mexico, approached Tesmec USA Inc. in 2021 to discuss the 1475 RH and its potential performance in 10,000 psi limestone. Romero’s knowledge and the 1475 RH have proven vastly successful: the 1475 RH cuts the right-of-way during the day, and, while waiting for other equipment to catch up, it is moved to a limestone quarry to produce base.

From canal building in south Florida, housing pads in Las

Vegas, office buildings in Nashville, Tenn., underground salt mines in NorthAmerica and mining operations inAfrica and the Arabian Peninsula, the Rock Hawg keeps meeting and exceeding customer expectations.

“Many people are so used to what they have and are afraid of new technology. Some companies have been running diesel- and gas-powered equipment for 40, 50 years. Hydraulics have been on equipment for 80 years. Adjusting to an electric-powered machine is quite a paradigm shift.”

Future

“We see electric-powered technologies and their applications spilling into our industry,” said Honeyman. “Look at what is happening in the auto industry. Tesla has really driven the battery electric concept and an entire industry is shifting.”

Green construction technology is only getting better and smarter with new machine and equipment applications and opportunities, he added.

Among the many advantages of electrification, said Honeyman, are “noise and vibration reduction, instantaneous power and software features that are otherwise unavailable with a diesel engine and hydraulics.”

Matt Sagaser, director of innovation accelerated at Bobcat’s Acceleration Center, added that “the software features allow us to advance and accelerate the technology. We are doing it in a way that is more efficient and cost-effective, and beyond expectations from a power perspective. Overall, our electric innovations allow us to offer customers an experience they may not have previously imagined.

“We could have very easily removed the diesel engine and replaced it with a battery. Instead, our innovation team, which leads this project, wanted to see what other advantages we could achieve if we made it all electric and removed the hydraulics as well. That opened up a lot of possibilities.”

Honeyman and Sagaser will hold an Education Session –“Electrifying the Future: Get Plugged In” – at ConExpoCon/AGG 2023. They will examine the advantages of electric construction equipment beyond just being “green.” They also will discuss what an all-electric platform allows construction equipment manufacturers to do. 

CaterpillarIndustrySalesRepresentativePromotesDiversity

When Yuliya Maslava, industry sales representative of Caterpillar, talks about diversity and inclusion, she’s not merely echoing company values. She’s the embodiment of these beliefs she and her employer share.

“I see more diversity and inclusion at Caterpillar,” she said while acknowledging that construction is largely “still a white male-dominated industry.”

Having been surrounded by multiple ethnicities and cultures while in college and when she lived in Chicago, Maslava said she “would like to see more at Caterpillar.”

She knows her presence counts — she is a woman and an immigrant. She promotes diversity by participating in recruitment panels and virtual job fairs. She believes it’s helpful for others to see women in positions like hers. She also believes it’s beneficial to “learn from people with unconventional career paths.”

Footsteps to Follow

Born in a small town in Belarus, Maslava grew up with her single mother, who worked for 42 years as an engineer for a manufacturer of off-highway trucks. She visited her mother’s workplace on “bring your kid to work day,” where she witnessed how equipment is made.

invest in us.”

Part of that training includes “a lot of opportunities to operate the equipment: dozers, excavators, loaders,” she said.

Maslava has had her turn on all of them. Acknowledging that she’s not an expert equipment operator, she believes having that first-hand experience enables her to understand the equipment better. She finds it helpful when she meets with customers.

In addition, she said, “I love to hop in a car with a dealer salesman for a ride-along to learn their territory and meet with the customers.”

“I grew up around equipment,” she said, adding, “but I never thought I’d be around heavy equipment as a career.”

While attending college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and working in a restaurant, where she said she “honed my communication skills,” Maslava was invited to interview with Caterpillar. She took on the opportunity and truly connected with the people at the company, which prompted her to accept the position she was offered.

Two years later, after going through Caterpillar’s Marketing Training Program, which she describes as “a crash course covering all divisions, designed to create a wellrounded employee,” Maslava is still in her position. Still learning. Still encouraging other women.

Sales Support

Maslava is quick to clear up a common misconception about her position as industry sales representative.

“I don’t sell the equipment; the dealer does that,” she said.

Instead, she describes her job as a “sales support consultant — a bridge between the manufacturer and the dealer.”

She considers it a partnership, with her role to deliver answers about availability, pricing, special configurations, training opportunities, and helping the dealer excel at their business.

“Caterpillar does a good job of training,” she said. “They

This allows her to hear questions directly from the customer, learn about their business and hear their feedback first-hand. If their issues are technical, she defers to the application specialists.

“That’s what gives our customers value: the value of our dealer network, expert knowledge, training, support and resources.”

Maslava said she is always very appreciative when the customers take the time out of their busy day to meet.

“I enjoy learning more about their business — how they started and how they got to where they are now. There is nothing more important than our customers, each of them with their own unique success story.”

Maslava prioritizes attending all customer events in person to establish long-lasting relationships.

“It’s easy to get buried in administrative work, but I try to prioritize personal interaction. Every three years, the dealers get a new rep; my goal is to make an impact — to leave a legacy as being helpful, responsive and present.”

Changes Coming

She currently provides sales support for three Caterpillar dealers in the Carolinas, but job rotations last just two to three years before reassignment to a new territory, so Maslava anticipates a move. She said she wouldn’t mind

moving to the opposite coast or the Pacific Northwest to understand the industry in that part of the country, but also would gladly take on the international assignment. She lists Canada, Europe or Singapore as desirable locations on her list.

Maslava enjoys the flexibility of the job.

“I’m always on the road and I make my own schedule,” she said, adding, “It is not a traditional 9-5 office job.”

When asked about where she sees herself in the future, she said “Caterpillar is so big; there are a lot of jobs. It’s a global Fortune 100 company. There are infinite possibilities and room to explore career paths.”

One day, she envisions moving into management — maybe becoming a territory manager overseeing a team of sales and tech reps. “I’d like to lead people.”

Gains Made

For now, Maslava said her mother is her anchor. She taught her the value of commitment and perseverance.

Both mother and daughter are used to being the only woman in the room. However, there are more women in the room today. Maslava said there are 21 sales representatives on the North American team, eight of whom are women. That adds up to approximately 40 percent.

“There are more women in this role at Caterpillar now. There were only three when I started two years ago. That’s a huge change. It warms my heart as it has historically been a male role.”

In the future, she hopes to see more and more women taking on previously male-dominated roles, and she thinks that can happen if women like her continue to pave the way. She regularly attends “Women in Construction Industries” meetings where she connects with others for mentoring and networking opportunities.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity to meet more women in the organization and learn more about their personal and professional paths,” she said. They gather to share best practices, listen to guest speakers, discuss their challenges and celebrate each other’s successes.

The construction industry’s future is full of exciting opportunities, Maslava said.

“Electrification is a huge next step, and I can’t wait to see how the heavy equipment industry will change in the next 10-15 years as it adapts to the new energy sources and stricter environmental regulations.”

With “women supporting women instead of competing,” she predicts that women will play important roles in implementing changes in response to this evolving industry, and she intends to play her part in advancing the heavy equipment business, the construction industry and her gender’s place in both.

SENNEBOGEN870BringsYard-WideImprovementtoCimco

Ron Brenny is operations manager of the largest of seven scrap recycling yards owned by Cimco ResourcesinIllinoisandWisconsin.

The 26-acre facility in Sterling, Ill., can receive as much as 800 tonsofmaterialaday, fromplastics to electronic waste, but the bulk of it is destined for the site’s Metso mega-shredder. Cars and farm equipment, demolition scrap and industrial metals are meticulously sorted to match orders for shred from nearby mills.

As Brenny said, “We’re pretty full most of the time. We’re using our whole 26 acres. I have a lot of piles.”

But with the arrival of Sterling’s new SENNEBOGEN electricdrive 870 Hybrid material handler, the entire landscape of Brenny’s yard is changing.

Reaching for Simpler Process

Cimco’s current fleet of 17 SENNEBOGEN scrap handlers is comprised of the mid-range units typical for scrapyard applications: 830 and 835 models weighing in at 85,000 to 120,000 lbs. In comparison, the new 870 Hybrid is a monster: more than 220,000 lbs.

“Our main objective was to get the reach,” Brenny explained. Mounted on a 9-ft. pedestal with a tracked undercarriage, the 870’s 90-ft. boom can reach multiple piles of sorted material without maneuvering. It’s this extended working radius that has changed Sterling’s material handling and stockpiling processes.

Until now, trucks were offloaded at the far side of the yard. To feed the shredder, required material was loaded into trailers and moved up to the shredder’s infeed area, where it was offloaded into piles again. One of the 830 or 835 machines could then move it

onto the infeed belt. Now, with the 870, several steps are removed from the flow of material through the yard.

“So that was our goal: instead of transloading everything up to the infeed, we can simply unload right there at the infeed and just grab what we need when we want to run it.”

The new setup is efficient for equipment and for manpower, he said, and it greatly simplifies scheduling the movement of material and really simplifies his life.

With the 870 in service, not only can they position more stockpiles close to the infeed, but it can also pile more material.

“We’re actually able to increase our yard space because we can pile higher,” said Brenny. “That means we’re using less ground, so we’re opening up more yard now.”

Seeing the impact the 870 has made, Brenny now looks forward to bringing in a second 870 to serv-

ice the north end of the yard, adding further to Sterling’s total capacity.

Long Reach, Fast Cycles

When Cimco first decided to look into upsizing its shredder loading equipment, the Sterling team was open to all options. Initially, Brenny and his Yard Superintendent, Mike Kapple, and Cimco CEO John Gralewski were attracted to a tower crane. However, avideodemonstrationof the 870 changed their minds.

“They were just showing the machines at work side by side, loading a barge. And I started counting. And I could see how many cycles the 870 made compared to the other crane. And I’m like, well, that’s a no brainer, guys. That tower crane won’t be able to keep up with my shredder.”

According to Brenny, his operators felt the same way when the 870 was finally onsite.

“They’ve been feeding the shredder with an 835 for 15 years; they know the cycle times. We were all impressed with how fast it is for a big machine, with so much stick out there. They got up in there and were amazed how fast it goes. It’s been in operation since July and they’re still ecstatic with it.”

Less Cost, More Uptime

While the Sterling yard is now handling material more efficiently, Brenny also is seeing direct savings in operational costs with his newest SENNEBOGEN.

The 870 Hybrid features SENNEBOGEN’s distinctive GreenHybridenergyrecoverysystem. Its simple hydraulic design usestheweightoftheboomtocapture hydraulic pressure on each downstroke, then releases the pressure on the next upstroke to assist the lift. As a result, Green Hybrid models save up to 30 percent of the machine’s operating cost for ener-

gy, according to the manufacturer.

Brenny said that the company made a significant investment in infrastructure to deliver the necessary power to the 870’s location at the infeed, but he has no regrets.

“That money up front, we’re getting that back every day,” he said, “just by not pulling up to the diesel barrel every day. And we have no downtime for refueling either. The operator just gets in it, hits the button and he’s ready to go all day.

“With the electric, I can say it’s just a big super bonus for the maintenance side. It’s quiet. There are so many more issues involved with a diesel engine; you got DEF and oil changes and everything else, you know. And that’s all gone.”

Dependable Machines, Reliable Service

Uptime and dependability were key factors for Cimco when the firm began renewing its fleet in recent years.

“We’re all SENNEBOGEN now. That was a good move on our part.”

Brenny also credits the SENNEBOGEN distributor in his area, Alta Equipment, for its role in keeping his scrap handlers on the job.

“We try to do most servicing ourselves,” he said, “but when it gets into stuff a little over our heads, we can talk to them, and they help us out over the phone or sometimes come out and get the answers and we’re going again. The whole organization is good to work with: the salesman and the mechanics, they’re good. And they have the parts that you need when you need them. That’s pretty impressive. If we say overnight, we get it the next day.”

AEM HoF Inducts Bushnell

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) inducted Sherman Ward “Bud” Bushnell, founder of Genie, into its Hall of Fame for a broad range of contributions in developing and advancing technologies that support the construction and agriculture industries worldwide.

The AEM Hall of Fame recognizes the pioneers whose inventions, ideas, leadership and courage have contributed to the industry and our community’s quality of life. The award was presented to Genie President Simon Meester at AEM’s Annual Conference in Napa, Calif., on Nov. 18.

“Bud Bushnell is a tremendous addition to the AEM Hall of Fame,” said AEM President Megan Tanel. “His combination of innovation, professional dedication to safety, and personal dedication to the team he built at Genie, are exactly what the AEM Hall of Fame is meant to celebrate.”

Bushnell (June 13, 1921 to Nov. 14, 2020) founded Genie Industries, which today is the Genie brand of Terex Corporation, the pioneering manufacturer of mobile elevating work platforms, which enable people to work safely and productively at height. An inventor and craftsman all his life, Bushnell launched the company in 1966 in a small warehouse in

downtown Seattle. His first lift operated on compressed air, and customers referred to the hissing noise it made as “Genie magic in a bottle,” leading to the company name.

Through his inventions, Bushnell didn’t just make work at height more efficient, he helped make it safer. Helping people work safely at height is still the most important thing Genie and its equipment do today.

“I am proud and humbled to be able to accept this honor on behalf of Bud and the Bushnell Family,” said Meester. “Leading by example, putting the customer first and focusing on the team to make it happen made us the company we are over the last 55 years. We have a lot of exciting products coming our way in the next ten years, and Bud’s spirit is in all of them.”

More than 65 industry leaders have been inducted into the AEM Hall of Fame since its inception in 1993.

Nominations for the AEM Hall of Fame are open year-round. An independent panel of industry experts evaluates potential inductees, and honorees are publicly announced yearly and celebrated at AEM’s Annual Conference.

Mecalac Introduces New Swing Loader Models to N.A.

Mecalac, a global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of compact construction equipment for urban environments, introduced three new swing loader models to the NorthAmerican market. The all-newAS750,AS850 and AS1000 models join the previously released swing loaders, the AS600, AS900tele, AS1600 and AS210.

Mecalac’s swing loaders feature a rigid chassis and three steering modes — 2-wheel, 4-wheel and 4-wheel crab — that allow for tighter turns than a standard articulated loader. Combine that with the Mecalac swivel boom, and you have a machine that can perform a complete rotation in a footprint that is 20 percent smaller than a conventional loader, according to the manufacturer.

At the same time, the swing loader is designed to maintain 100 percent stability regardless of how it is positioned. With a proprietary integrated counterbalance paired with an automatic rear axle locking system, the bucket and its contents can be lifted and turned up to 90 degrees on either side without any loss of stability.

Finally, the pivoting boom makes it possible to position the machine once to complete a loading task, reducing the footprint and saving time.

“Mecalac’s swing loaders offer new capabilities to the NorthAmerican market,” said Peter Bigwood, general manager of Mecalac North America.

“Mecalac has designed a product that addresses the shortcomings of traditional loaders and provides a tool that can operate in a confined space, is economical in its movements, improving productivity, and is completely stable in all positions. The new models offer all these advantages in the

11,000 to 15,000 pound range.”

At just over 11,000 lbs., (5,000 kg), with a bucket capacity of 0.98 cu. yds., the AS750 is the second smallest swing loader model. Compared with the AS600, the new model is wider with a longer wheelbase (6 ft. 1 in.) for even greater stability while the higher engine power (61 hp/45kW) provides heightened lifting and loading capacity.

The parallel, or P-bucket, offers enhanced precision during material handling operations, especially with the pallet forks or load hook. Finally, the AS750 is designed with a spacious cab and two doors to give the operator optimal visibility for a safer job site.

For those looking for even more productivity, the mid-size AS850, with an operating weight of 13,184 lbs. (5,980 kg) and a bucket capacity of 1.1 cu. yds., is the answer. This model encapsulates all the benefits of the AS series swing loaders with optional increased travel speed up to 25 mph.

Astep up in power from the AS850, the AS1000 also is a mid-size model at 14,639 lbs. (6,640 kg)

and a bucket capacity of approximately 1.3 cu. yds. It offers enhanced speed and efficiency with its 4-cylinder 75 hp (55.4kW) high-torque engine. An optional high-flow hydraulic line offers up to 120 l/minute, which is suitable for driving hydraulic attachments.

The AS750 is wider than the AS600 with an increased wheelbase for even greater stability while the higher engine power provides heightened lifting and loading capacity.

Double-Award-Winning JCB Electric Mini Prouduces Its 100th Machine

JCB’s double-award-winning electric mini excavator recently marked another significant milestone in its short history — the production of the 1,000th machine.

JCB entered full production with the world’s first volumeproduced, all-electric mini excavator in 2019. On Dec. 21, employees at JCB Compact Products gathered on the shop floor to cheer the milestone 1,000th 19C-E model off the production line.

JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said, “We are delighted with the success of JCB’s electric mini excavator, which is proving very popular around the world, particularly in North America, France and the UK, where there is a growing demand for zero emissions equipment operating in urban environments.”

JCB has been at the forefront of the development of electric technology to meet customers’ demands for zero-emission products, and the company has led the way with the introduction of a battery-electric solution for smaller machines.

The 19C-1E is five times quieter than its diesel counterpart and can be fully charged in under two hours, according to the manufacturer. Further, it can complete a typical full shift on a single charge.

The model has been a big hit with companies working inside buildings and in emissions and noise-sensitive innercity areas. It is practical for working indoors or outdoors, in

factories, tunnels or basements, for digging foundations or on utility projects.

“The JCB 19C-1E mini excavator has proven very popular since its introduction to North America, with customers from major contractors, large rental companies and individual owners all praising its performance for such a small machine,” said Keith Hoskins, VP Compact Products, JCB North America.

“This machine not only supports our customers in the increasing demand for zero-emission machines, but has the benefit of also being quiet, both factors enabling internal operations and overnight operations in urban areas.”

In 2019, the 19C-1E scooped one of the automotive industry’s most prestigious honors when the Royal Automobile Club presented JCB with the Dewar Trophy for “Outstanding Technical Achievement in the British Automotive Industry” for the development of the machine. The following year, the Royal Academy of Engineering announced that the 19C-1E had won the MacRobertAward, a prize for innovation that has been presented since 1969 to honor a wide variety of engineering feats, including the CT scanner and Rolls-Royce’s Pegasus engine used in the Harrier jump jet.

Werk-Brau buckets and attachments are used all over the world, butwhentheprojectisinyourown hometown … well that hits a little differently. So, when the Weber Company of Archbold, Ohio, recently embarked on a project to control erosion along a drainage ditch that ran through nearby Findlay,Ohio,Werk-Brauemployees were proud to see their handiwork used to improve their local community.

The Dalzell ditch is roughly 3 mi.longandwindsitswaythrough several areas of town, including residential neighborhoods, industrial zones, commercial areas including restaurants and hotels, adjacent to Findlay High School and along Interstate 75.Weber was tasked by Hancock County with placing rip rap in roughly 2 mi. of the ditch — areas that were most susceptible to erosion as marked by county engineers. Weber crews would restructure the steeply sloped ditch banks, those with slopes approaching 2:1, to better accommodate the incoming rip rap, grooming both sides if necessary to hold the sides in place and prevent further erosion and dam-

age.

Because of the winding nature of the drainage ditch and the extremelywetweather, whichboth precluded bringing heavy equipment onto the jobsites and caused further erosion that they were trying to eliminate, the project presented some peculiar challenges.

ArmedwithuniquetoolsincludingaCaseCX250longstickexcavator with a Werk-Brau 2-yd. ditching bucket and a side dump trailer, Isaac Weber and his team made respectable progress and completed the project within their established timeframe.

Weber and his team began the projectinearlyNovember.Starting in the residential areas posed some challenges as well as some opportunities. Since there was no place to stockpile material, they were runningitinasneeded, daybyday, which was a challenge as the Carey Quarry was about an hourand-a-half round trip from the job site.

“We have a side dump trailer so we can pull right up to the guardrailanddumpafullloadover the side,” said Nate Meyer, project coordinator. “One load will do one side and a little of the bottom, and

the next load will do the other side and a little bit of the bottom.”

While awaiting the next trailer load of rip rap, excavator operators would distribute the rock as needed, shoring up or restructuring the ditch sides as required.

The side dump trailer allowed Weber crews to accomplish 40-ft. of the project at a time, helping them to average roughly 400 to 500 ft. per day depending on how fast they could get rock from the quarry.

After the ditch wound its way out of the residential areas where the side dump trailers were no longer feasible, Weber crews stockpiled material and moved it with a John Deere 624P wheel loader equipped with a 3.5-yd. bucket. The loader would dump a loadofriprapintotheditch, favoring whichever side was being shored up at present. They would thengobackforanotherloadwhile theexcavatordistributedtheriprap along the ditch banks. A trio of excavators were used on the project — a Case CX130, a Case CX210 and a Case CX250 — all fitted with Werk-Brau quick couplers and buckets.

“We trust Werk-Brau products. When I see that logo, I know I’m getting a high-quality, durable product that will do what it was designed to do,” said Weber.

Stockpiling materials kept the excavator and loader operators busy, but tight confines and space constraints required creativity in certain areas.

“We had a spot where the ditch ran in between the back yards of houses, so there was nowhere for an excavator to go,” said Meyer. “So, we built a ramp out of rip rap and drove the loader down there and dumped a bunch of stone. Then we brought in the Case CX130C excavator and placed it on the sides.”

While not ideal, the scenario worked … for the most part.

“He did have a rock get caught in the track, and then it walked the track off in the ditch,”said Meyer. “That was a pain. We put a load of rock in his bucket, extended his arm way out so that he was just traveling on one track, and he one-tracked it out of there.”

Diamond Mowers Introduces TR Boom Drum Mulcher

Bringing new and improved performance features to the forefront of vegetation management, the new TR Boom drum mulcher from Diamond Mowers offers a safer, faster and more complete solution to tree and brush control.

Engineered for heavy-duty mulching applications, this game-changing attachment optimizes productivity and increases asset utilization for greater work diversity and revenue potential.

“Our Boom drum mulcher is the best option available yet for controlling heavy brush and trees,” said Matt Nelson, director of development of Diamond Mowers.

“It offers class-leading productivity, highly-controlled discharge and an unbeatable finish in heavy materials. When coupled with a Boom rotary or Boom flail head, it turns your boom mower into a complete roadside vegetation management solution.”

Adding a Boom drum mulcher to your existing Diamond

Boom mower will improve your roadside maintenance operations in a number of valuable ways, according to the manufacturer.

More Cost-Effective Solution

Specifically designed to mulch trees and brush, the Boom drum mulcher is a must-have addition for any municipal fleet or contractor faced with cutting, processing and eliminating woody materials from areas that are unreachable with a skid-steer or excavator.

Featuring a larger-than-industry-standard hydraulic motor, enhanced motor protection and an optimized infeed system, the mulching head can work through material faster and requires less maintenance and fewer consumable costs than attachments that also cut grass.

Safer to Operate

In addition to improved chip containment and control of thrown debris, the Boom drum mulcher can handle larger material than other attachment heads and completely mulch trees up to 8 in. in diameter. This means that fewer trees will require potentially dangerous hand-falling and cleanup. It also means less risk of damaging surrounding property, making it a great choice for working near roads or in densely populated areas.

Cleaner Job Sites

Diamond Mowers’ Boom drum mulcher produces small, aesthetically pleasing chips and grinds stumps down to ground level due to its forward drum exposure, which allows

Ideal for delivering a clean, finished look, Diamond’s Boom flail mower processes brush and small trees into a relatively fine mulch but can only handle material up to 4 in. in diameter.

for optimal ground engagement and greater productivity per pass.

This multi-functional mulching head can fulfill all reaching, cutting and processing needs without leaving branches and other material strewn on the ground, so there’s no need for a clean-up crew to achieve a well-groomed result.

Adding to its appeal, the Boom drum mulcher features Diamond Mowers’ Q-Connect system, which allows users to interchange boom heads for tackling different applications. This connection system enables a single operator to switch attachment heads easily and quickly, resulting in decreased downtime and increased productivity.

NoviceOperatorsLearntoMaintainPropertyWithJCB270T

For more than a decade, Holly and Stephen Ingham maintained 4 mi. of trails on their North Carolina property with nothing but a pole saw and tractor.

The couple recently decided they wanted a more efficient means of preserving the area. They researched several options before purchasing a JCB 270T from Company Wrench.

Unmatched Safety

As inexperienced operators, the Inghams were looking for the safest compact track loader on the market. Two features set the 270T apart — its single boom design and side door entry.

According to JCB, the single boom adds 60 percent visibility compared to track loaders that have dual booms. The side door entry gives operators safe, easy access to the cab. Most track loaders require operators to enter or exit from the front of the cab by climbing over attachments or walking under unsupported booms.

Versatile Attachments

The Inghams consulted Company Wrench Sales Territory Manager Will Byrd when deciding on the proper attachments to pair with their 270T.They determined a CID built swing boom cutter, 78 in. JCB general-purpose bucket, 78 in. CID brush grapple bucket, CID Xtreme stump bucket and CID threepoint hitch adaptor were the best options for their property.

The Inghams chose the swing boom cutter because it tilts up to 90 degrees with 8 ft. horizontal reach and 16 ft. vertical reach. This attachment’s reach and tilt functions allows the Inghams to cut areas that were previously inaccessible.

After clearing overgrowth, the Inghams can use the general-purpose bucket, brush grapple bucket and stump bucket to clean up the area. The general-purpose bucket picks up piles of smaller branches and the brush grapple bucket moves larger logs. The X-treme stump bucket can reach more than four feet underground to easily

remove stumps and roots.

The three-point hitch adaptor allows the Inghams to use attachments normally reserved for their tractor on the 270T.This means the Inghams can use their hydraulic

log splitter on the 270T to cut firewood onsite. Then they can quickly swap from the three-point adaptor to the general-purpose bucket to transport large piles of firewood across their property.

Byrd personally delivered each piece of equipment and spent several hours showing the Inghams how to properly operate the 270T and its attachments. On their first day with the 270T, the Inghams cleared brush and overgrown limbs from a large portion of trails in less than two hours with the swing boom cutter and general-purpose bucket. This process previously took more than a day to complete.

Future Plans

Once the Inghams become more comfortable with the 270T and its attachments, they plan to sell their tractor. The 270T will be their goto machine for grading their driveway, mowing pastures and unloading supplies, in addition to servicing their trails.

“It takes a lot to maintain our property, and my husband and I are not getting any younger,” Holly said. “We decided to get the 270T now because we want to live here for the rest of our lives. This equipment is going to make it much easier for us as we get older.”

Curry Supply Marks 90Years in Business With New Facility

Celebrating a milestone of 90 years in business, Curry Supply Company continues to set the pace in commercial truck manufacturing, showing no signs of slowing down. Known for its extensive range of service vehicles and related equipment, the company also is gaining attention for its considerable increase in production capacity.

Already one of the largest manufacturers of commercial service trucks and rail equipment across the United States, its recent move to Hollidaysburg, Pa., and opening of a second facility in Houston, Texas, has increased its manufacturing and service operations exponentially.

Founded by Lyonel Ritchey in 1932 as a general store in Martinsburg, Pa., Curry Supply Company is now in its third generation of ownership and management by the Ritchey family. Current president and owner Jason Ritchey joined the company as a full-time employee in 2000, ushering in a new era of success and subsequent growth.

Continued success led to expansion as Curry Supply’s footprint grew significantly, spanning coast to coast across the United States. Currently, Curry Supply has facilities throughout the Keystone State, including its corporate headquarters in Altoona, Pa. The continued success prompted westward expansion, adding two facilities in Texas and another inArizona to enable Curry to bolster its service to its clients along the west coast.

Curry Supply Company’s equipment lines include, but are not limited to, cone trucks, highway safety truck-mounted attenuator trucks, dump truck bodies, flatbed trucks, metro TMA trucks, mechanic/service trucks, lube skids, lube trailers, fuel trucks, lube trucks, propane service trucks, vacuum trucks, on and off-road water trucks and tanks and winch trucks. In addition, the company carries a line of demount-

able/hook lifts from Stellar Industries and industrial carrier trucks from VersaTran.

Since its start, Curry Supply Company’s core manufacturing and corporate headquarters were located in Martinsburg, Pa. After three significant expansions in the Martinsburg location, the company had reached the limits of its ability for further growth necessitated by marketplace demand. In November 2021, the company packed up and moved to its new facility in Hollidaysburg, Pa. — with a length exceeding half a mile; it was once the largest locomotive production and repair shop in the world.

With extensive renovations and updates at the new facility, Curry Supply's team completed the move from Martinsburg in four days of long hours and late nights. The move significantly increased the company’s manufacturing space to more than 500,000 sq. ft.

The new facility increases production efficiencies by implementing lean and flow technologies and features the latest machinery and components. Curry also has added several blast booths, paint booths and coating booths. Major expansion and upgrades are under way at the Curry Supply Houston facility in Hockley, Texas.

Curry Supply Company’s continued success is tied direct-

ly to its ability to embolden the success of its customers. Ritchey attributes the company’s phenomenal growth to listening to customers, understanding their needs and working to create logical solutions. In doing so, Curry Supply has evolved from an equipment dealer and distributor to a mainstream manufacturer.

“We cover every state and, to provide constant and comprehensive coverage, we’ve made sure to position sales personnel in every market we cover,” said Ritchey. “Our goal is for all our facilities to be equipped with duplicate capabilities. We’re focused on bringing a consistent level of service excellence and a best-of-class range of equipment to all our customers.”

Regarding the current business environment, Curry Supply Company has elected to address the challenges headon and lean into the rebound Ritchey is confident is coming.

“We’re all in the same boat, dealing with labor shortages, supply chain issues and rising material costs,” he said. “At Curry Supply Company, we see these as improvement opportunities instead of roadblocks. Part of that approach is positioning people with the skills and experience to overcome obstacles and work around challenges.”

Curry Supply Sees Success With BranchesAcross U.S.

To conquer some of those obstacles, Curry Supply brought in key personnel experienced in areas that tie directly into the company's growth plan.

“Last year we added on a senior director of supply chain and a vice president of operations who, combined, add over 45 years of industry specific experience and expertise to our team,” said Ritchey. “Those key additions provide us an extensive increase in experience when it comes to supply chain/procurement management and advanced manufacturing, ensuring that excellence in quality and efficiency remain central to Curry’s customer value proposition and growth strategy.”

Keeping on top of the supply chain also is necessary for Curry Supply to advance.

“Rather than wait to exhaust allocations, we work proactively with our suppliers while also searching out additional sources for equipment, materials and supplies,” he said. “Constant communications with our customers and vendors, providing information and updates, and receiving valuable feedback is critical to the process.”

As Ritchey looks to the future, he remains optimistic, seeing technology as among the driving forces behind both opportunities and solutions.

Already one of the largest manufacturers of commercial service trucks and rail equipment across the United States, Curry Supply Company’s recent move to Hollidaysburg, Pa., and opening of a second facility in Houston, Texas, has increased its manufacturing and service operations exponentially.

“There’s so much to build and enhance. The growth and increased demand for alternate energy sources will require a stronger grid.At the same time, ongoing infrastructure development and maintenance requirements call for 10-to-15-year projects such as airport construction and building and improving the domestic rail system.”

For Curry Supply Company, technology impacts every facet of the company’s operations. One area where technology has played a vital role in communications.

“Customer expectations have ramped up,” said Ritchey. “The nature of the business calls for constant access and immediate response. Communications technology provides the ability of real-time personal contact regardless of the hour or immediate automated response when appropriate.”

Keeping up with training technology also is a priority for Curry Supply; staying on top of it is necessary to attract and keep top employees.

“Technology is playing a growing role in attracting new workers to the trades,” he said. “Virtual reality is already being employed in the training and certification process. With VR, an individual can learn and hone a skill like welding in a safe and rewarding environment. The upcoming generation of workers is already adept at video games, and VR training provides a natural progression.”

Nearly 1,500 Bridges Will Be Repaired Over Next FiveYears

BRIDGING

from page 1

“AGC would like to applaud the recent CTC action allocating SB-1 and IIJA funding to infrastructure projects throughout our state,” Peter Tateishi, chief executive officer of AGC of California, told Construction Equipment Guide. “California is in a much stronger position with these investments and the construction industry stands ready to help deliver these important projects.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom added, “With more than 26,000 bridges in California — including some of the busiest and most iconic in the nation — we thank the Biden-Harris Administration for this historic investment to make our bridges more resilient and create thousands of good-paying, middle class jobs for Californians.”

Caltrans has established teams working on distributing the money, according to Will Arnold, media relations manager of Caltrans HQ.

“The funding will help address existing needs in California,”Arnold said. “The degree of overall impact will vary depending on the specific program objectives and funding made available for each area. The funding appears to be largely consistent from year to year for the next five years.”

Arnold noted that the funding can be used for any eligible bridge project, which includes those to help redress the infrastructure deficit to replace aging structures.

“We have advanced repairs and upgrades to California’s transportation system, including to the state’s bridges,” said Arnold. “With the funding from SB 1, the department repairs an average of 221 bridges annually— an 85 percent increase compared to pre-SB 1 levels. By 2027, Caltrans will have repaired at least 500 more bridges than it would have without SB 1 funding.”

While California has fewer roads (lane miles) compared to states such as Texas, it has significantly more vehicles travelling on them. Asked if this applies to bridges, Arniold replied, “Yes. California has the most heavily-used highway system in the United States by a significant margin. The wear and tear on our highways and bridges is a function of this heavy usage. Highway vehicles, especially trucks, wear out highways and bridges over time.

“California roadways also serve two of the world’s busiest ports, the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, which account for 40 percent of all sea imports to the United States generate a significant number of truck trips as a result.”

The federal funding covers bridges owned by other jurisdictions.

“The bridge formula program includes dedicated funding

for Tribal transportation facility bridges and ‘off-system’ bridges owned by a county, city or other local agency,” said Arnold. “The law also includes an incentive for states to direct these funds to off-system bridges. While states normally must match federal funding with up to 20 percent state or local funding, the guidance issued by the FHWAindicates that federal funds can be used for 100 percent of the cost of repairing or rehabilitating locally owned off-system bridges. Additionally, the infrastructure law requires 15 percent of the bridge funds be spent on rural bridges on low volume roads.”

Some of the larger projects that will be funded through the investments include:

• Approximately $266.7 million for a project on Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 50 near West Sacramento in Yolo County that will rehabilitate the roadway by placing a Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) overlay, rehabilitate ramps and bridge decks and upgrade median barriers to current standards, among other improvements. The $266.7 million allocation includes more than $244 million in federal IIJA funding;

• A total of $75.8M to rehabilitate roadway by replacing pavement with Plain Jointed Concrete Pavement and asphalt concrete in and near Hercules, Rodeo, and Crocket from Route 4 to the Carquinez Bridge. The $75.8M allocation

“Caltrans partners with the construction industry to help grow its workforce. Growing small business firms is also a priority for Caltrans,” said Will Arnold, media relations manager of Caltrans HQ.

101 in Goleta near State Route 217 in Santa Barbara County.

• Approximately $22.4M toward improvements on Route 36 at Hely Creek Bridge, Little Larabee Creek Bridge and Butte Creek Bridge near Bridgeville in Humboldt County. The $22.4 million allocation includes more than $19.9 million in federal IIJA funding.

• Roadway Rehabilitation Project on State Route 41 in Madera County: $21.5 million allocated to project that will rehabilitate roadway by resurfacing pavement, widening shoulders and bridge, and reconstructing culverts near Fresno, from 0.1 miles north ofAvenue 15 to 0.1 miles south of State Route 145. The $21.5 million allocation includes over $19 million in federal IIJA funding.

Securing Funding

The largest investment is approximately $266.7 million for a project on Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 50 near West Sacramento in Yolo County that will rehabilitate the roadway, rehabilitate ramps and bridge decks and upgrade median barriers.

includes more than $67.1M in federal IIJA funding.

• $37.8M to replace Cordilleras Creek Bridge on Route 101 in Redwood City. This project includes $33.5M in IIJA funding.

• $36.2 million for a project on State Route 70 near Paradise in Butte County that will restore and repair damaged roadway by raising the vertical alignment approximately 5 ft., protect the embankment against future flooding by constructing a soldier pile retaining wall, replace Bear Creek Bridge and construct concrete barriers.

• $34.5 million ($30.5 million in federal IIJA funding) to replace the San Jose Creek Bridge on State Route 217 near Goleta in Santa Barbara County to meet current standards and provide shoulders for disabled vehicles, maintenance workers, pedestrians, and bicycles.

A major effort was undertaken to secure the funding.

“Caltrans and its local partners established consensus principles for California that were shared with Congress during the legislative process,” said Arnold, “which the department believes were effective in influencing the final Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.”

Caltrans has a priority list for bridges that require attention.

“We work with the California Transportation Commission to fund bridge projects on the state highway system and to fully use all federal transportation funding that becomes available,” said Arnold. “Caltrans is evaluating how we can best put these funds to use. The Caltrans Project Book [projectbook.dot.ca.gov] is a good indication of how the state prioritizes repairs on state highway bridges based on a bridge’s rating and condition.”

Having the money to fund the projects is one thing, but do the general contractors and subcontractors have the resources to take on additional projects?

While California has fewer roads (lane miles) compared to states such as Texas, it has significantly more vehicles travelling on them.

• Approximately $32M toward roadway improvements and the construction of retaining walls along Route 299 near Willow Creek from East Fork Bridge to east of Cedar Creek Road in Humboldt County. The $32 million allocation includes more than $28 million in federal IIJA funding.

• $25 million including more than $22 million in federal IIJA funding to replace the San Jose Creek Bridge on US

“Caltrans is working with its construction partners and the department believes that they will be able to support this level of funding,” Arnold said. “Caltrans partners with the construction industry to help grow its workforce. Growing small business firms is also a priority for Caltrans. This historic investment will help fix the state’s bridges that need it most, make them more resilient and safer for all users, and keep our economy moving.”  CEG

DOTAddsSevenMoreProjectsto‘EveryDayCounts’List

expanded the program to include multiple transportation modes.

In announcing the seven new projects in early December, the DOT said the program will focus more intently on traffic safety and emissions reduction. The expansion in types of projects reflects the national push for transportation infrastructure improvements as a result of the bi-partisan IIJA, according to the DOT.

The FHWA had in the past worked with state transportation agencies to zero-in on appropriate innovations. Collaborating with agencies such as the FTA and the FRA, the DOT was able to grow the program beyond just infrastructure.

“All the innovations in the past were chosen just with state transportation highway departments in mind,” said Stephanie Pollack, the acting administrator of the FHWA. “This set was chosen with a broader set of modes.”

Improvements to nighttime safety, a push for rural and tribal workforce development are among the latest innovations. So is an initiative to integrate greenhouse gas assessments into transportation planning.

Though its name is Every Day Counts, the program isn’t just about speeding up transportation innovation, according to Bloomberg News.

“It’s not just faster,” said Pollack in announcing this latest round of innovations. “The seven innovations were chosen to not just focus on faster project delivery, but the three big buckets — safety, sustainability and then equity and inclusion.”

The FHWA sits down with local governments and their transportation departments and stakeholders to choose each new set of projects. Previous rounds of the Every Day Counts program included technology to accelerate bridge construction and digital ticketing, according to Bloomberg.

The program’s shift to embrace other transportation modes comes as concerns about U.S. car dependence continue to grow.

EDC’s new project devoted to nighttime safety, for example, is designed to boost visibility for all users, including cyclists, pedestrians and transit riders.

“We’re really excited about making this tool that’s been proven in the highway context available in all the different modes of transportation,” Pollack said.

This year’s innovations being promoted by the FHWA and the FTA will improve project delivery across highway, rail and transit agencies at the state and local level.

“Americans get the best value out of innovations in transportation when they are broadly shared among communities so that good ideas spread across the country,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete

Buttigieg. “With today’s announcement, these innovations will be more rapidly deployed to save lives, protect taxpayer dollars, reduce carbon emissions and ensure more families, workers and businesses benefit.”

Showcasing Innovation

This latest round of the DOT’s Every Day Counts innovative projects:

•NighttimeVisibilityforSafety

Since the nighttime crash fatality rate is three times that of the daytime, enhancing visibility along corridors, intersections and pedestrian crossings helps reduce fatalities. This initiative promotes traffic control devices and properly designed lighting to improve safety for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists and people who use public transportation and passenger rail services.

• Next-Generation Traffic Incident Management

More than six million crashes a year in the United States put responders and other vulnerable road users at risk. Next-Generation Traffic Incident Management programs promote emerging technologies such as emergency vehicle lighting and queue warning solutions. These and other tools can advance safety and operations to help keep crash responders safe and mitigate traffic impacts after a crash, according to the DOT.

• Integrating Greenhouse Gas Assessment and Reduction Targets in TransportationPlanning

This initiative provides resources to help agencies, regardless of transportation mode, quantify greenhouse gases and set goals to decrease motor vehicle, construction and life-cycle emissions through planning and project development.

• Enhancing Performance with InternallyCuredConcrete(EPIC)

Cracking in concrete is a limiting factor in achieving long-term concrete performance. Internal curing mitigates shrinkage cracking and has the potential to substantially extend the service life of concrete bridge decks, benefitting travel by motor vehicle and public transit, as well as enhancing the performance of pavements and repairs.

• Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)forSustainableProjectDelivery

Construction materials such as concrete and asphalt have environmental impacts during their life cycle, whether the transportation facility supports passenger vehicles, transit vehicles, or railroad cars. EPDs, which document those impacts, help states support procurement decisions and quantify embodied carbon reductions using life cycle assessments for sustainable pavements.

• Rethinking Disadvantaged Business Enterprise(DBE)inDesign-Build

Many design-build contracts do not adequately provide opportunities for disadvan-

taged businesses. New practices are available to support the effective integration of program requirements to help small, disadvantaged businesses compete for designbuild contracts for highway and transit projects.

•StrategicWorkforceDevelopment

The demand for highway workers is growing under the new investment of the IIJA, and emerging technologies require new skills. This innovation is being implemented by 32 states, with six of those states having institutionalized Strategic Workforce Development as the way to promote career opportunities in transportation. A continued focus on taking this nationwide will help stakeholders across the country improve their ability to identify, train, and place highway construction workers.

Innovative approaches will be informed by the DOT’s Memorandum of Understanding with the DOL to foster a diverse and skilled workforce to support infrastructure projects.

The focus will expand to rural and tribal communities to increase career opportunities.

“Many of the innovations announced as part of this forward-thinking program will help make the nation’s transit systems safer, greener and more equitable,” said Nuria Fernandez, the FTA administrator. “We look forward to promoting the findings from these initiatives, from reducing greenhouse gas emissions to leveling the playing field for small businesses to compete for designbuild contracts, throughout the transit industry.”

History of Success

Every two years since 2011 FHWA has worked with state transportation departments, local governments, tribes, private industry and other stakeholders to identify a new set of innovations to champion that merit accelerated deployment.

The first six rounds of EDC have yielded several innovative project delivery technologies, including prefabricated bridge systems, design-build contracting, project bundling, e-construction (paperless contracting) and safety initiatives.

The program’s success is based largely on states selecting innovations they want to pursue.

The model identifies and rapidly deploys underutilized innovations to shorten the project delivery process, enhance roadway safety, reduce traffic congestion and integrate automation.

Proven innovations promoted through EDC facilitate efficiency at the state and local levels, saving time, money and resources, said the National Operations Center for Excellence (NOCOE).

After selecting EDC innovations, transportation leaders from across the country gather at regional summits to discuss and identify opportunities. It is there that innovations that best fit the needs of their respective state transportation programs are implemented.

Following the summits, states finalize their selection of innovations, establish performance goals and begin implementation.

NOCOE said the EDC program has made a significant positive impact in accelerating the deployment of innovations and in building a culture of innovation within the transportation community.

“Since the inception of EDC, each state has used 19 or more of the 52 innovations promoted through Every Day Counts, and some states have adopted more than 40,” said the organization.

Many of these innovations have become mainstream practices across the country.

Accelerated Innovation Demonstration and State Transportation Innovation Council Incentive programs administered by FHWA provide additional funding and resources to help accelerate the adoption and standardization of innovative technologies.

Previous innovations include Accelerated Bridge Construction, Road Diets, and Safe Transportation for Every Pedestrian (STEP).

The bridge construction program involved a suite of technologies that allow for accelerated construction of bridges, significantly reducing traffic delays and road closures and often reducing project costs.

Since October 2010, transportation agencies have designed or constructed more than 2,500 replacement bridges using these technologies.

Road Diets are innovative roadway reconfigurations that can help improve safety on mixed-use streets by reducing vehicle speeds, calming traffic and freeing space for alternative modes of travel.

The plan typically converts an existing four-lane, undivided roadway segment to two through lanes and a center, two-way left-turn lane. Road diets can reduce collisions, increase mobility and access and improve a community’s quality of life.

The STEP program is the application of cost-effective countermeasures with known safety benefits to reduce pedestrian fatalities at crossing locations. With pedestrian fatalities a continued concern nationwide, this innovation is helping communities improve pedestrian safety and making crosswalks and pedestrians more visible to drivers.

“By advancing 21st-century solutions, the transportation community is making every day count, to ensure our roads and bridges are built better, faster and smarter and operated at peak efficiency,” said NOCOE.

BryanAuction Company to Hold FirstAnnual IEDASale

On Feb. 17, 2023, Bryan Auction Company will be hosting its first annual IEDA (Independent Equipment Dealers Association) Orlando Live Auction.

The purpose of this sale, billed as “IEDA Florida Live Heavy Equipment & Transportation Auction,” is to help grow and support IEDA, according to Bryan Auction Company.

“We hope while everyone is in Florida for the

warm weather that this event and auction becomes a tradition for years to come,” said Doug Bryan, president of Bryan Auction Company and Bryan Heavy Equipment Inc. “From buying and selling at the auction to the keynote speakers in our industry and the convention hall, the Orlando IEDA event will be a must if you are in the heavy equipment business.”

Having consigned equipment from members only makes this auction a “legitimate exclusive event that buyers can feel confident coming from trusted names,” Bryan added.

A representative from Bryan Auction Company will be reaching out to IEDA members and will be following up, as needed.

Bryan said anything an IEDA consigns will be well advertised through a host of construction publications, including Construction Equipment Guide, as well as through ProxiBid and Machinery Trader and equipment facts and all social media platforms.

Bryan Auction Company is headquartered in Oelwein, Iowa, and also has a facility in the Dallas/Fort Worth/Midland, Texas, area.

For more information, call 319/283-2345 or visit www.bryanauction.com/.
