KCA unveils next generation of global players

Dubai - KCA, renowned for its iconic projects spanning over 30 countries in a remarkable 30-year journey, proudly announces the dawn of its next chapter.

For over three decades, in the hands of royals and oligarchs, atop the waves aboard the world's most extravagant yacht, within the iconic silhouette of Dubai's Burj Al Arab, and marking the skyline with groundbreaking Expo Pavilions in Kazakhstan and Dubai, KCA has sketched the dreams of the globe's elite across over 30 countries.

“It's this deep understanding of our clientele that allows us to translate their desires into truly unique spatial narratives. In our hyper-connected world, fleeting social media trends often overshadow the importance of authentic human connection and the unique essence of a space.

KCA stands firm in the value of cultural understanding and personal interaction. Our design philosophy hinges on fostering

meaningful relationships, harnessing the collective brilliance of our team, and honouring the dialogue between past and present. We believe these principles are the cornerstones that will sculpt the future of design”, says Khuan Chew, Founder and Design Principal.

At the heart of KCA lies the extraordinary vision of Khuan Chew. She has cultivated a sanctuary for creative minds, assembling a team where diverse backgrounds blend seamlessly to orchestrate a symphony of innovation and sophistication. “We were pioneers, having set foot in Dubai in 1993 with the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, followed by the Burj Al Arab, and then Madinat Jumeirah. Proudly, we 'put Dubai on the map' with this golden triangle of creations long before the world recognized its significance."

KCA's international team, expanded over the past three decades across offices in London, Hong Kong, and Dubai, now embarks on the journey of the

next 30 years. Emerging as KCA's new generation 'Think Tank,' they lead the group on a global scale. Proudly 'home grown,' each member has collaborated with Khuan for many years, ascending through the ranks to gain extensive experience and emerge as leaders in their own right.

Leading the Creative team is Rakan Jandali, recently appointed Design Principal and Creative Director. With his deep grasp of Middle Eastern culture and steadfast dedication to authenticity, Rakan enriches our team immeasurably.

Having been with the company for over a decade, Benedick Bello assumes the position of Technical Director. As an architect with a blend of technical and creative skills, Ben serves as the backbone of KCA Global, effectively managing the delicate balance between contractual and technical aspects of operations to ensure success at every project phase.

Mohamed Yusuf, who has ascended from accountant to CFO, complements Ben in ensuring contractual performance. His journey underscores the resilience and expansion of the company, as he serves as a pillar supporting KCA's growth trajectory.

Wiktoria Kopychka, newly appointed Projects Director and new Business Development, brings 12 years of experience at KCA London and expertise in ultrahigh-end luxury and hospitality design. She will spearhead expansion into Zurich (Europe) and the Caribbean, including Antigua, in line with the company's pioneering style.

Aedas elevates urban living with Rixos Branded Residences in Dubai

Aedas’ addition to the Dubai skyline will offer unparalleled views and 84 floors of opulence

Aedas, a leading global architecture firm, has announced one of its latest projects, Rixos Financial Centre Road Dubai Residences. Located in the heart of the city, this iconic development marks the debut of the world’s first Rixos standalone residences. Rixos Hotels and Residences, part of Ennismore, a global lifestyle and leisure hospitality company, brings an added layer of prestige to the project. The building will offer some of the finest views of the Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai while raising the bar for sophistication and urban living.

Standing as the second tallest residential tower in Dubai after the Burj Khalifa, this landmark building by Aedas will occupy the last corner plot in Downtown Dubai. The project hosts 260 units ranging from 1- to 4-bedroom apartments, along with two types of luxurious penthouses and 4 levels of world-class amenities.

The building rises to a height of 329 meters, comprising 2 basement levels, ground floor, five podium levels, and 78 floors.

With one side overlooking the vibrant streets of Downtown Dubai and the other offering picturesque vistas of the canal, residents will experience the best of both worlds. The project employs innovative design strategies to maximize these views. A generous floor-to-floor height of 3.8 meters creates opportunities to frame the views. Strategic massing with a smaller footprint on lower levels that expands on the upper floors, and

a façade perimeter that is oriented towards the best views will offer an elevated experience to its residents.

The building is inspired by simple yet elegant design principles and is divided into three distinct volumes – the Low Zone with 32 floors, the Mid Zone with 27 floors and the High Zone with 12 floors of penthouses and most premium vistas.

Designed to balance form and function, the project is a testament to the firm’s commitment to excellence and exceptional solutions The team has crafted a contemporary urban expression that harmonises seamlessly with the prime location in Downtown Dubai, reflecting the core values of the Rixos brand.

“At Aedas, we are committed to designing buildings that inspire and elevate the human experience,” said Global Design Principal Ignacio Gomez. “Through Rixos Branded Residences, we are celebrating the fusion of architectural innovation and urban luxury. The project is a result of collaborative efforts of all stakeholders and rigorous design explorations.”

With its unparalleled location, thoughtful design, and upscale amenities, the project not only sets a new standard for luxury living in Dubai but distinctly differentiates itself in the marketplace. Emphasising lifestyle elements and cutting-edge touch points, the project offers an array of amenities designed for residents’ comfort, including fitness facilities, kids club, padel courts, running tracks, yoga studios, golf simulation rooms, private screening rooms, and a fully-fledged boardroom for meetings.

Aedas looks forward to bringing this visionary concept to life, creating an iconic landmark that will leave an indelible mark on the city’s skyline and its dynamic landscape.

Herman Miller and Studio 7.5 introduce Zeph Side Chair

Designed by Berlin-based Studio 7.5, the Zeph Chair collection with Herman Miller is distinguished by a colorful one-piece seat and flexible back

Through the same researchbacked ergonomics that led to the design of the multipurpose chair and stool introduced in 2022, Zeph Side Chair by Herman Miller and Studio 7.5 brings a natural recline to the fourleg side and visitor seating category and supports a variety of applications including focused work, collaborative small group, and fluid educational settings.

Designers Burkhard Schmitz, Carola Zwick, and Roland Zwick at Studio 7.5 found initial inspiration for Zeph with the help of the students at the universities they teach. 3D printing

allowed the design team to iterate prototypes of the kinematic plastic monoshell form and embedded technology, ultimately achieving their goal of animating a shell chair. This research also led to configuration options to meet various needs––with and without a 3D Knit unibody or seat pad, fixed arms or armless, and a base equipped with casters or glides.

The Zeph line-up supports sustainability goals through an advanced yet simple design that offers more comfort, colors, and style, made with fewer components. Like Zeph Chair and Stool, Zeph Side Chair can be fitted with an optional 3D Knit seat covering made from 50 percent postconsumer recycled content, and because it’s knitted to the chair’s exact dimensions, there’s zero fabric waste. The 3D Knit seat covering offers

additional flexibility and longevity by easily sliding directly onto the shell, no tools required, and can be swapped out for one of the other up to 20 textile color choices if a space needs a refresh.

An expansive color palette across the seat, base, and 3D Knit seat covering complements and enlivens any space, allowing organizations to pair the chair creatively with their brand identity and interior design.

Zeph is the latest in a multi-year and awardwinning partnership that created performance seating bestsellers Cosm, Mirra 2, and Setu. When introduced in 2022, Zeph Chair was also named a MetropolisLikes NeoCon Awards winner.

Zeph Side Chair is now available to contract customers through authorized Herman Miller and MillerKnoll dealers.

Embracing heritage in

designing spaces

at Heriot-Watt University Dubai, addresses the enduring appeal of traditional architectural design.

In this constantly changing world, there is an increasing appreciation for the timeless charm of traditional architectural design. Architects are embracing cultural diversity and

redefining the importance of seamlessly blending historical elements with modern necessities. Architects strive to create spaces that deeply resonate with the community, nurturing a sense of belonging by honouring traditions and values. Traditional architecture draws inspiration from the pages of history and creates a sense of continuity using timetested materials and designs. The Middle East has earned a reputation for seamlessly blending its rich heritage with modern architectural innovations. Gulf countries have actively sought out top international architects, inviting them to envision innovative ways of living that cater to contemporary needs. Heritage design elements over the years in the UAE have undergone an evolutionary process, drawing inspiration from local heritage, cultural wisdom, and accumulated knowledge. These traditional design features contribute to shaping spaces that promote a sense of belonging and local culture within the UAE's built environment. These traditional design features contribute to shaping spaces that promote a sense of belonging and local culture within the UAE's built environment.

architectural designs for public and private spaces, marking significant shifts in their urban landscapes. Many projects reflect a perfect balance between preserving cultural legacies and meeting the demands of today's society, be it technological advancements, environmental concerns, or functional requirements.

For instance, the design of Dubai's Museum of the Future incorporates elements of art and poetry through Arabic calligraphy on its exterior. These inscriptions, featuring quotes about the future from the prime minister, serve a dual purpose. They are engineered windows, blending aesthetics with functionality in a dynamic manner.

In the UAE, several examples of traditional architecture reflect the country's rich heritage and cultural identity. For instance, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is a stunning modern example of Islamic architecture. It showcases traditional Emirati architecture with its unique designs and intricate marble work, honouring the ArabicIslamic architectural styles. In fact, the entrance and reception

areas of Heriot-Watt University Dubai campus offer a space to weave together diverse cultural elements, creating captivating fusion styles of its international branding with illuminated lighting fixtures and integrating it with natural daylight like the Mashrabiya screens inspired by local architecture. These screens filter light through a lattice pattern, abstracted from the university's coat of arms, adding a distinctive touch that transforms the space into a vibrant reflection of global unity. As the country's urban landscape expands, we can see echoes of ancient Arabian tribes reflected in its built environment. With a deeprooted historical influence, the UAE's architectural style symbolises various elements of Arabic-Islamic culture, carving out its unique traditional identity.

One of the defining features of designing with heritage lies in its adaptability to the environment, harmonising with nature by integrating features that respond to local climate conditions. Through the choice of locally sourced materials, traditional design not only promotes sustainability but also weaves a narrative of the region's history, connecting past and present. For instance, architects and designers are increasingly rediscovering and reinterpreting the principles and techniques of clay architecture for the modern context. Clay architecture is a sustainable and eco-friendly practice that reduces the environmental impact of construction. Clay is a renewable and biodegradable material that requires minimal energy and water to produce. Moreover, clay has thermal and acoustic properties that enhance the indoor comfort and efficiency of buildings. Additionally, clay can be recycled and reused for other purposes. Masdar City and Expo

2020 Dubai are some examples of clay architecture in the UAE. Traditional designs are not just structures, they are embedded with symbolism and meaning, communicating with the community through architectural forms and patterns. Cultural narratives are rich with symbols and icons, each carrying a deep meaning within their respective cultures. When designing interior spaces, incorporating these symbols can add layers of depth and significance. Designers have multiple options, from integrating artwork and sculptures to incorporating patterns and decorative elements inspired by culture. Spaces become more than just places when you include these symbols in the design. They become canvases that tell stories. These symbols not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of space but also serve as powerful visual cues that resonate with cultural associations and narratives. They act as reminders of heritage, tradition, and identity, grounding the space in its cultural context. Whether it's a traditional pattern decorating a rug, or a contemporary artwork inspired by ancient symbols, each element contributes to creating a sense of belonging and connection.

As traditional architectural design continues to remain an integral part of modern architectural innovation, architects are doing more than just constructing buildings. They are creating legacies that unite generations. In a world that is always changing, holding onto our traditions is not just a choice, but a way of paying respect to the roots that ground us in our past, present, and future. It’s about celebrating the uniqueness and diversity of humanity and finding beauty in our differences.

Do you believe that lighting is an important factor in environments, and how?

Energy-efficient LED lighting minimises environmental impact, while dimming and sensor controls further reduce energy consumption.

Lighting plays a critical role in environments, impacting aesthetics (enhancing features, setting mood), visual comfort (reducing eyestrain, improving safety), biological health (regulating sleep patterns), emotions (creating relaxing or stimulating atmospheres), and environmental sustainability (through LEDs and smart controls).

In short, thoughtful lighting design creates beautiful, functional, and healthy spaces.

What are the challenges facing your industry going forward?

To stay competitive, the value proposition needs to shift beyond just energy savings (though LED integration is crucial). User experience through comfort, smart features, and customisation options is key.

·Technical hurdles also exist. Compatibility between various brands' devices and user complexity with advanced systems need to be addressed through standardisation and simplified interfaces. Reliability and security are paramount, with robust designs, updates, and strong security measures essential.

·Finally, user education is critical. Many consumers are unaware of the benefits, limiting market growth. Educational marketing and user-friendly materials are needed to showcase the value proposition.

·Collaboration among stakeholders - manufacturers, developers, installers, regulators, and consumer groups - is necessary to overcome these challenges. By working together, they can improve accessibility, user experience, and system reliability, unlocking the industry's potential to transform homes into smart and user-centric environments.

What changes has product innovation brought to the company?

Pioneering innovation for over 60 years, LUTRON has redefined lighting control from the industry's first solid-state dimmer in 1959, to the exquisite Alisse keypads and the artfully engineered Palladiom shades. This dedication to progress has positioned them as a global leader. Lutron consistently delivers cutting-edge solutions, expanding its product portfolio beyond lighting. They now offer a comprehensive suite of smart home solutions, including motorised shades, temperature controls, and security systems, catering to a broader market. Embracing the latest advancements, LUTRON integrates seamlessly with popular voice assistants and cloud platforms, enhancing user experience and accessibility. Rigorous research and development ensure exceptional reliability and performance, solidifying Lutron's reputation for quality and dependability. Through continuous innovation, LUTRON remains at the forefront of the smart home industry, delivering intelligent solutions that enhance comfort, efficiency, and well-being for homeowners worldwide.

What new trends are

emerging in your industry?

The lighting control industry is on the cusp of a revolution, fuelled by a series of upcoming cutting-edge trends. AI-powered systems are taking center stage, enabling features like personalised lighting experiences and intelligent adjustments based on occupancy and preferences. Dynamic lighting adapts to changing needs, while circadian lighting mimics natural daylight to promote better sleep and focus. Li-Fi technology leverages light waves for high-speed data transmission, offering a potential game-changer for indoor connectivity. S+S STUDIO Reimaging Luxury in Hospitality Design through Storytelling

IRA AND OLYA SUNDUKOVY

, FOUNDERS OF S+S STUDIO, HAVE PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN SHAPING THE LANDSCAPE OF HOSPITALITY DESIGN OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES. THEIR STUDIO'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY MARKS A MILESTONE IN THEIR JOURNEY, HIGHLIGHTING THEIR DEDICATION TO REIMAGINING LUXURY THROUGH STORYTELLING.

Ira and Olya, tell us about yourself!

We're Ira and Olya Sundukovy, twin sisters and founders of S+S Studio, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Apart from work, our passions have always been traveling and gathering new impressions. In every corner of the world, we have visited not only the museums and cultural landmarks, but also the most amazing restaurants and hotels. That's why we feel so fortunate to work in hospitality design all over the world - we create new points of attraction for others to enjoy.

Our team is a tight-knit group of over 90 talented professionals from all over the world, whose specialty is turning visions into reality. And once the workday’s over, it's family time with our five children in the mix, balancing the design world and motherhood at the same time.

How did you get into interior design?

Growing up, seeing the contrast between the natural beauty of the Ural Mountains, and the dull industrial landscape that surrounded us, we never accepted compromise. We were always drawn to beauty, and that longing led us into the world of design.

On graduating in 2004, we founded S+S Studio, hired our first employees, and by 2005, we completed our first international project - an apartment in Hong Kong, we mostly designed residential projects at that time.

tracted increasingly high-profile clients, we worked on projects of larger and larger scale. But with each rise in the status of our clients, we began to realize that our true path was actually to create expressive, bold interiors that tell stories and were accessible to the wider public.

Tell us about the studio's inception and how it has thrived and grown over the past two decades. As we shifted our focus to hospitality design, we soon became sought after as one of the best restaurant designers in Russia, earning a number of awards. And then In 2012, Accor hotel group approached us for our first hotel project. Knowing that we could design the public spaces, they asked us if we knew how to design hotel >>>

guestrooms. We'd spent years perfecting high-end residential interiors, so naturally we were a bit offended, but accepted the challenge.

We succeeded, and it became the beginning of our love story with hotel design, and with Accor. We even designed their office in Dubai.

While we began with lifestyle and midscale hotels, these were anything but a step down from our luxury villa projects. They were a breath of fresh air, with artistic challenges that took all our creativity to solve.

By 2020, we expanded into luxury design, collaborating with brands like Four Seasons, Raffles, and Sofitel. And by 2022, we had established offices in Cyprus and Dubai for international projects.

How would you describe your style?

Storytelling is super important for us. All our designs start with finding the narrative. Like anthropologists, we gather all the details and history

of the location and owner’s personality.

We create interiors that strive to tell stories through space, blending bold luxury details and lifestyle savvy, with a touch of daring playfulness and self-irony, curated for those who appreciate sophistication with an unexpected twist.

We don't follow trends; we imagine new fairy tales to tell.

How do you approach your projects? Talk us through the process.

All projects at the studio are personally overseen by us, ensuring we never take on more than we can give our full attention to.

Perhaps because we are twins - our first rule is always teamwork, where each team member contributes their opinion and brings forward something new and unexpected.

Each project involves anywhere from 10 to 30 team members, including art directors who shape the vision — who have been with us for 14-17 years by the way — designers who craft every detail, visualizers who bring to life the dreams of our designers, draftsmen who meticulously detail all aspects, managers who source perfect materials within strict budgets, and of course, project managers who coordinate and guide the team toward realizing the vision.

We take immense pride in the fact that our entire team works in-house, producing advanced 3D visualizations and flawless working documentation.

How do you handle conflicting opinions from clients?

First of all, the customer is always right when they agree with us (laughs). So either we manage to convince them or they manage to convince us, and in the end we are in agreement.

But our top priority when dealing with disagreements is to stand up for designs that truly please our real customers, the end users. When guests are happy, they're much more likely to return, resulting in better revenue and happier clients.

And the majority of our clients return to us again and again over the years, which is the main reward for us.

Your work, notably your recent project Luna Sky Bar at Four Seasons DIFC, demonstrates outstanding excellence in F&B design and hospitality. Share a few fascinating design details. We drew inspiration from Dubai's unique skyline and the mystique of the moon. Thoughtfully arranged seating and bespoke artistic partitions depicting the lunar phases enhance the ambiance, defining the space, and providing an Instagram-worthy backdrop to the best views of Dubai.

Alongside Luna, we've curated the elegant Churchill cigar bar and the urban chic Penrose lounge terrace, and our de-

sign for the revamped Mercury Lounge at Four Seasons Jumeirah will debut in September.

How do you ensure your designs are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing?

Despite seeming decorative, our designs always start with functionality. We start with an emphasis on comfort and guest experience, and layer the whimsical and fanciful elements on top.

And of course, over the past 20 years, we've learned not only from our successes but also from our mistakes; it's these that make us stronger and wiser.

How do you handle time-sensitive projects with tight deadlines?

In fact, all our projects have strict deadlines, because time is money; it's our daily reality.

We start with an incredibly wellplanned schedule, add the flexibility to augment teams as needed, and finish with cool project managers who don't clip the wings of our creators, but help them with resources and planning.

However, during the initial stages, our perfectionism kicks in as we search for the project's true essence, refusing anything less than amazing.

At this stage, clients may feel nervous, but the better the initial concept, the faster and more impressive the final project.

What's to come for you in the coming 2024 and beyond, anything exciting you can share with us?

2024 has kicked off with exciting ventures for us!

We've already celebrated the opening of Swissotel Tbilisi in March and launched two restaurants in Armenia.

Looking ahead, we're thrilled to see the openings of Sofitel Benin and MGallery Nairobi this summer.

Our plans for the rest of the year include exciting restaurant projects in vibrant locations like Dubai, London, Los Angeles, Limassol, and Marbella, and hotels in Thailand and across the MENA region.

But we’re still waiting for our dream project on a tropical island somewhere!

Building a Better Future/ Maxwell Connop

Regional Practice Lead - Architecture, AtkinsRéalis, discusses how architecture evolved over the years, highlights of an ongoing residential project with Aldar, and how the company continues to lead through a holistic approach across disciplines and sectors.

What are your favourite areas of work, commercial, hospitality, residential, or something else, and where do you find inspiration?

Each typology within the realm of architecture offers a unique set of challenges and rewards. From commercial places to hospitality venues, residential projects and beyond, each area presents an opportunity for creativity and innovation. I find aviation architecture more interesting due to its emotive nature. Designing spaces within airports and aircraft requires a sharp balance of functionality, aesthetics, and passenger experience, making it an exciting area of work.

Regardless of typologies, my inspiration often stems from the natural environment. To me, nature is our greatest library and it’s no surprise that biophilic design is so emergent as a key driver in a lot of designs.

How does AtkinsRéalis push the boundaries of what is possible in design and architecture?

The future is going to be driven by energy conservation and sustainability. At AtkinsRéalis, our purpose of ‘engineering a better future for our planet and its people’ is underpinned by the power of innovative thinking, digital technologies and embracing a multidisciplinary approach. Being a global company, we recognise the inherent value of collaboration across geographies, allowing us to explore new approaches and solutions for the built environment. This has helped us to be at the forefront of shaping the future of design and architecture, creating structures that are not only aesthetically pleasing but are environmentally conscious and socially impactful.

"The future is going to be driven by energy conservation and sustainability. At AtkinsRéalis, our purpose of ‘engineering a better future for our planet and its people’ is underpinned by the power of innovative thinking, digital technologies and embracing a multidisciplinary approach."

WWith over 30 years of global industry experience, how have you observed architecture evolve over time?

Over the past three decades that I have spent in this sector, the architecture industry has witnessed massive evolution. What once seemed static, has now become so dynamic that we do a lot more with less. Moreover, the performance of buildings is increasingly driving a whole moral, social and sustainable era. Technology advancements have accelerated our processes and the latest complimentary aspects of computational, parametric and generative modes of creation have opened new possibilities, enabling architects to conceive designs that were previously unimaginable.

What other activities and endeavours keep you engaged, aside from your architectural projects? How do outside interests influence your approach to architecture?

I’m conscious that being focussed on only architecture can lead to self-referential thinking. I spend a great deal of my time enjoying and collecting contemporary art and sculpture, immersing myself in films and appreciating product design. I often find inspiration in parallel creative industries and in nature. To me, nature serves as an endless source of inspiration, providing lessons in sustainability, efficiency, and beauty that can inform architectural design. By integrating insights from these interests into my architectural practice, I am able to enhance my work and contribute to more holistic and impactful solutions.

design-middleeast.com Interview
36 DESIGN MIDDLE EAST | MA Y 2024

Could you briefly discuss your residential project with Aldar, including the major highlights and how far it has progress ed?

Our mixed-use residential project, Grove, with Aldar, is progressing well. Notable features include sustainable design, innovative architecture and amenities tailored to modern living. The project comprises multiple phases, with some already constructed, and some in the planning phase.

Are there any challenges you are facing while working on this residential project, and how are you dealing with them as the project progresses?

During our work on this mixed-use residential project, we've faced challenges aligning with ever changing market demands for various functions such as residential and retail spaces, obtaining timely regulatory approvals and managing site constraints arising from projects in different phases. To address these challenges, we are closely collaborating with regulatory authorities, refining design solutions and implementing efficient construction management practices in coordination with our site team.

How crucial is sustainability in every project for you?

What are some of the activities/initiatives proposed in this regard and what is the response?

For me, sustainability is not a choice, it is rather a necessity. We have a moral duty to ensure our buildings are designed in a way that they promote well-being and ‘touch the world lightly’. At AtkinsRéalis, our sustainability experts are integrated into the early stages of each project, ensuring that sustainable principles are ingrained in the very DNA of the design.

As you think about the future, where do you see yourself and AtkinsRéalis, especially in terms of the architecture and your contribution?

For the years to come, I see AtkinsRéalis continuing to lead the way in architecture and design by thinking holistically across disciplines and sectors. Our ability to create synergies and deliver value-added solutions to clients sets us apart in the industry. Personally, I am excited about the role I play in nurturing and guiding our young talent. I believe in the potential of our team and am very motivated and enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring them to ensure they reach their full potential.

By encouraging a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning, I am confident that AtkinsRéalis will remain at the forefront of the industry, making significant contributions to the built environment and shaping a sustainable and inspiring future for the planet and its people.

We steadfastly advocate for the well-being of project users as an inherent aspect of our design ethos. By prioritizing the holistic wellness of individuals within our projects, we inherently catalyze significant impacts within the communities we serve. Our focus extends beyond mere architectural structures; we aim to curate transformative experiences that resonate deeply with users, leaving a lasting impression on both individuals and broader community dynamics.

unparalleled comfort, relaxation, and exceptional experiences that elevate the overall well-being of both community members and guests, thereby fostering a sense of belonging and enrichment within the spaces we create.

How has the definition of sustainability evolved throughout your career?

As awareness grew about the interconnected social, environmental, and economic systems, the definition of sustainability expanded. It now encompasses a more holistic approach that considers not only environmental concerns but also social equity and economic viability. We took this broader perspective that sustainable development must meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs in all of the projects and communities we design for people.

In the realm of urban planning, sustainability pertains to the meticulous design and development of cities and communities characterised by livability, resilience, and equity. This encompasses ensuring access to clean air and water, fostering the presence of ample green spaces, and facilitating the availability of affordable housing options. Similarly, within the agricultural domain, the pursuit of sustainability revolves around the implementation of practices that safeguard food security, minimise environmental degradation, and foster social equity. >>>

design excellenceContinuing the legacy of

With over 20 years of global industry experience, how have you seen this field evolve with the times?

Over the past two decades, I've witnessed significant evolution within our industry, marked by dynamic shifts in sustainability, technology, design philosophies, and

client expectations.

Climate change has emerged as a paramount concern, reflecting a broader societal awareness of environmental responsibility. There’s been an increasing demand for designs that minimise ecological impact and maximise carbon net zero, leading to innovations in materials, construction techniques, and building systems.

At the same time, we’ve

seen the integration of advanced technologies into every facet of our work, empowering architects and designers to visualise, iterate, and communicate ideas more effectively than ever before.

As a result, the role of the architect has expanded beyond mere design to encompass broader strategic consulting and placemaking. Clients seek partners who can not

only deliver aesthetically pleasing structures but also create environments and experiences that foster community, wellness, and productivity.

What do you view as your greatest achievement in this role to date?

It all begins and ends with our clients. Our portfolio has grown significantly over the last five years and this is a true testament to pioneering progress as we continue to help shape societies and spark bold new ideas.

Our team has tripled and our physical footprint in the Middle has expanded significantly. We continue to create an international and diverse community of designers and architects, acting as an extension of one global firm, with one goal - to design the most impactful, healthiest, and most suitable environments in our field.

A pivotal aspect of our growth has been the expansion and nurturing of our Saudi Arabia office. By fostering a culture of

excellence, empowerment, and collaboration, we have attracted top-tier talent in line with Saudi’s Vision 2030 Saudization program and cultivated a high-performing, on-the-ground team, which is driving innovation and delivering exceptional results for our clients.

What are your favourite areas of work, commercial, fit-out, hospitality, residential, or something else, and where do you find inspiration?

We are working across all of those sectors, and more, so it’s hard to pick one! Large projects, with their scale and complexity, fascinate me as they require innovative thinking and strategic vision at the outset to address the unique challenges they pose. From envisioning futuristic smart cities to developing sustainable infrastructure solutions, these projects push the boundaries of what is possible and inspire us to think boldly and creatively.

Master planning, with its focus on comprehensive development strategies and longterm visioning, appeals to my passion for holistic thinking and strategic design. It has the power to transform entire regions, shape the trajectory of urban development, and be the catalyst for economic growth; fuelling thriving business and vibrant urban communities. These projects are always human-centric which is at the heart of all we do.

How do you approach challenges and complexities that arise during the project lifecycle, and how does your team ensure successful project completion?

Our approach is rooted in collaboration, communication, and a relentless commitment to problem-solving. By fostering a culture of teamwork and transparency, we overcome all obstacles and always ensure successful project completion.

By actively involving clients and partners in the decision-making process and soliciting their feedback and insights, we can align the project vision with their vision, fostering

a sense of ownership and partnership that is essential for success.

We also draw on the diverse experiences and perspectives of Gensler experts and research specialists from around the world, assembling multidisciplinary teams that bring a wealth of knowledge, skills, and insights to the table.

I always encourage open and honest communication within the team, creating a culture where everyone feels empowered to voice their solutions, share ideas, and collaborate on design.

How has the definition of sustainability evolved throughout your career?

Initially, the concept of sustainability was rooted in environmental conservation and resource efficiency, focusing >>>

GENSLER WAS THE FIRST ARCHITECTURE FIRM TO REPORT ON ITS CARBON FOOTPRINT AND WORKS TIRELESSLY AROUND THE WORLD TO KEEP INNOVATING IN THIS SPACE.

on strategies to reduce energy consumption, minimise waste, and mitigate environmental impact. However, over time, the definition has broadened to encompass a more holistic and multidimensional perspective.

One key aspect of this evolution has been the recognition of the interconnectedness between human and planetary health and the built environment. Beyond minimising environmental impact, sustainable design now prioritises the creation of healthy and inclusive spaces that promote occupant well-being, productivity, and quality of life. This includes considerations such as indoor air quality, access to natural light, ergonomic design, and biophilic elements that connect people with nature.

We’re incredibly proud of how we’ve moved the dial on sustainability within the built environment. Gensler was the first architecture firm to report on its carbon footprint and works tirelessly around the world to keep innovating in this space. We made a public commitment when we announced the Gensler Cities Climate Challenge which states that, by 2030, all our work will be net zero. Over the next six years, converting our portfolio will offset hundreds of millions of metric tons of CO2 as the savings compound each year. This is a challenge to ourselves — and to all architects and designers around the world.

How does Gensler as a design practice create a positive impact in the communities you operate within?

Firstly, we look at everyday impact. We believe that in an era of unprecedented change, our innovative designs can redefine the urban experience, integrating the evolving needs of work, living, and recreation in our cities.

Secondly, inclusive impact. We believe that great design is for everyone. Our commitment to inclusivity and diversity ensures our cityscapes reflect and celebrate the rich tapestry of urban society.

Finally, personal impact. We believe that each project we undertake has the potential to improve health and wellness, influencing how people live, work, and interact in our urban landscapes.

What are you working on currently?

We’re involved in several exciting projects that span a diverse range of sectors, scales, and geographies, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities for innovation and impact.

Across the region, we’re leading key projects that showcase our firm's expertise and commitment to excellence. From SEVEN’s ambitious and inspiring entertainment destinations in the Kingdom to creating immersive and experiential hospitality and leisure environments in the UAE. We’ve

also had the privilege of working with some of the biggest brands in the world as they launch their Middle East operations, entrusting us to design innovative and inspiring spaces that reflect their brand identity, foster collaboration and creativity, and provide an exceptional experience for employees and visitors.

As you think about the future, where do you see yourself and Gensler, especially in terms of the architecture and your contribution?

My aspiration is to continue building on our strong reputation for innovation, excellence, and client-centricity.

By leveraging our multi-disciplinary expertise and deep understanding of the local market dynamics, I aim to lead transformative projects that not only meet the evolving needs of our clients but also contribute to the sustainable growth and development of the Middle East.

Looking further afield, we want to expand our footprint into the wider MENA region, establishing our presence in emerging markets and cultural hubs where our design-led approach and global perspective can make a significant impact.

We’re also diversifying our service offerings in the region to address emerging trends and challenges. This includes expanding into additional practice areas such as aviation and sports, where our design expertise and strategic insights can drive meaningful change.

Ultimately, my goal is to continue driving Gensler's legacy of design excellence and positive impact, while also empowering the next generation of architects and designers to push the boundaries of what is possible and shape a brighter future for the built environment.

STAYING ON TOP OF TRENDS

Kate Instone, B

FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF BLUSH INTERNATIONAL, SETS OUT THE FIVE EXCITING TRENDS, OR SHOULD WE SAY LIFESTYLE CHOICES THAT SHOULD BE PART OF EVERYONE'S WISHLIST.

lush International is an interior design studio that specialises in creating homes that epitomise elegance and sophistication. With over 20 years of expertise and a portfolio spanning multiple countries, we have had the pleasure of working with outstanding clientele such as Madonna, Seal, Hugh Grant, sports stars, and heads of state.

In the world of luxury residential interior design, where extravagance meets elegance and functionality, Blush creates places that are both functional and visually appealing. For those wishing to enhance their homes with the latest trends, Blush has identified the top five luxury interior design trends now dominating the market.

WELLNESS

Incorporating wellness into residential design is now more than a trend; it’s a lifestyle choice. We are seeing health, relaxation, and overall wellbeing being a major priority to our clients. To design a wellness space, one must thoughtfully combine luxury and functionality, creating environments that are both invigorating and restful.

You don't have to own a mansion to include a health space in your home. With some careful planning, you can transform your master

Trends

Designs that prioritise wellness have become increasingly important in various industries, including hospitality, architecture, interior design, and urban planning

bedroom into your healing oasis. You can create a relaxing and meditation-friendly environment by using neutral colours, natural materials, low-level lighting, and indoor plants.

Your bathroom can be transformed into your very own spa to decompress and rejuvenate. Upgrade your shower by adding a steam unit, rain shower head, body sprayers, and a built-in bench for the ultimate luxurious shower experience. Install a deep soaking bath or a sauna if you have the space. Heated towel rails, plush robes, and slippers create the luxury spa feel. I love this holistic trend of luxury wellbeing within the home as it not only significantly enhances your quality of life, but also increases the value of your property.

SUSTAINABLE LUXURY

I believe that sustainability is not only one of the most important trends in luxury interior design; it is a fundamental imperative and personal responsibility. We now see a move towards homes that are not only aesthetically captivating but also forward-thinking, sustainability is now at the forefront of luxury interior design. Eco-friendly materials and energy-

efficient technologies are making a significant impact. We should all try to minimise our impact on the environment and one way we can do this is through our homes. As well as the more dramatic measures such as the use of solar panels, ecofriendly insulation, high-efficacy appliances, and more considered building techniques and materials. we can also look at being more sustainable on a smaller scale. The production of luxury furnishings and décor items often has a significant environmental impact, instead of buying new furniture you can upscale old furniture and give it a new lease of life by re-painting, re-modelling, or reupholstering. We also encourage our clients to invest in vintage or antique furniture and fittings, these are far more sustainable and add character to your home. I love this trend >>>

Kate

because by prioritizing sustainable practices, we not only enhance the beauty and elegance of our homes, but also leave a lasting legacy of sustainability for generations to come.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN

The new buzzword in interior design. Biophilic design is the trend when you incorporate elements of nature into indoor spaces, not only to enhance the aesthetic but to promote well-being and a deeper connection to nature within your home.

The concept involves incorporating direct views of nature; views of outside gardens or the creation of inside gardens, lots of indoor plants, or living walls. Use natural materials within your home and mimic the patterns of nature in the interior design. Lots of natural light and air are key elements along with the presence of water. It's creating a space whereby you feel you are surrounded by nature. This trend aims to reconnect people with the natural world, promoting well-being and enhancing the overall quality of life. By blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, we can create environments that inspire, rejuvenate, and nurture. The biophilic design creates immensely grounded homes and I believe helps to increase your well-being and reduce stress.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

This is a new trend that cannot be ignored. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now a driving force in the realm of interior design. AI is revolutionizing the way we can conceptualize, create, and curate our homes. With AI personalised design solutions, we are now able to tailor every aspect of the design process to meet our exact needs. From furniture selection, colour schemes to spatial layouts and lighting preferences. AI will ensure that every detail is considered to ensure your interior is tailored to your exact individual requirements and it’s done in record time! VR and AR technologies are also revolutionizing the way we envision and interact with our future homes. AIpowered VR and AR platforms allow us to create immersive, lifelike simulations that enable us to virtually walk through and experience our homes before a single piece of furniture is purchased or installed.

design-middleeast.com
Trends DESIGN MIDDLE EAST | MAY 2024

Access to views of nature, such as greenery, water features, or scenic landscapes, can have a positive impact on well-being and cognitive function.

Biophilic design is an innovative approach to architecture and interior design that seeks to reconnect people with the natural environment by incorporating elements of nature into the built environment.

This is a hugely useful tool when designing your new home, this level of pre-visualisation was historically very expensive and time-consuming; it is now almost instantaneous and available to everyone.

I find this trend very exciting; AI is most certainly ushering in a new era of innovation and sophistication in interior design. As designers continue to embrace the transformative power of AI, the future of interior design promises to be even more exciting, dynamic, and visionary than ever before!

QUALITY OF BUILD TO WITHSTAND TURBULENT WEATHER

This trend stands out as both a necessity and a hallmark of excellence: prioritizing the quality of build to withstand the forces of nature, particularly flash floods and storms. As climate change continues to manifest in extreme weather events, the demand for resilient and durable interior spaces has never been greater.

We are now seeing homeowners wanting to ensure that their homes are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly resilient to water damage. We are seeing an increase in the use of water-resilient materials from moisture-resistant hardwoods and waterproof laminates to durable stone and porcelain tiles. Every element of the interior needs to be carefully chosen to withstand the impact of flash floods and storms. By prioritising quality materials with proven durability, we ensure homes remain intact and pristine even in the face of nature’s fury. This trend of prioritizing the quality of buildings against flash floods and storms represents a paradigm shift in interior design in the UAE. Embracing resilient materials, smart construction techniques, and integrated flood protection systems, enables us to create luxurious living spaces in an era of climate uncertainty. As the importance of resilience continues to grow, this trend will undoubtedly shape the future of luxury interior design, setting new standards of excellence and innovation in the industry.
