Letter from the Publisher The just completed Body, Mind, Spirit Expo in Skokie was an overwhelming success. There were many new faces in attendance, which is refreshing to see in our spiritual world, and Sunday developed into family day with many younger kids in attendance with their parent or parents. Overall attendance was very strong for the two day event. Our spiritual community is growing and that is a very good thing. People seem more open and accepting of change, and without change there can be no personal spiritual growth. I was describe the predominant feeling of the new folks as searching, with many not even sure of what they are searching for. The important thing is they have begun their search of discovery and who knows what they will find. I do not usually sit in on the presentations because of the overall time demands of the expo, but I make an exception and sat in on Stewart Pearce’s talk, and I am glad I did. Stewart is not a new face in our spiritual world, but he is definitely a new face in America and a welcome shift from the sales pitches that are so prevalent today. Stewart brings with him from his home in London, his four books and seven different Angel card decks along with a charming, entertaining and informative presentation. I look forward to working with him, although it may be spring before he returns to the States. The Faery and Knight Festival that we are sponsoring at Camp Infinity in Indiana on Saturday September 27, is a must see if you have young kids or grand kids, or if you are just an adult that likes to dress up in period costume. We expected to attract kids, but the response from adults in costume was unexpected and a pleasant surprise. One grandmother told me she has wanted to wear a fairy costume for years and we have given her the opportunity to do so. We have arranged for special hotel rates in Cloverdale for those who want to drive the night before and not miss anything in the morning, or just stay over Saturday night after a long day of fun and festivities. See the full page ad in this issue for more details. I am honored to host a fund raiser for the Barbara Marx Hubbard Conscious Evolutionaries Chicago group on Sunday September 21. Barbara is an extraordinary high energy octogenarian making the world a better place for us all. She will not only be present, but will be the sole presenter and available for a Q & A at the afternoon event. This is intended to be an intimate gathering with a limited number of tickets so if you are interested, it would be best to reserve early. This magazine will be represented with a booth and staff at TheosoFest, September 6 in Wheaton. Check the calendar in this issue for times and location. I will also be teaching my very popular class on dream interpretation at the Theosophical Society starting on September 16 and running four consecutive Tuesday evenings. This class is also listed in the calendar. I hope to see you at one or more of these events. Until next time,

An Interview With...

Kasia Szumal

“I am Living My Dream”by Walter Perschke To celebrate our 35th anniversary publishing the oldest metaphysical and spiritual magazine in America, I am interviewing someone that has made it possible. Without Kasia’s incredible energy and dedication, the magazine we all love wouldn’t be here today. Walter Perschke: You were born in Poland and migrated to the U.S. as a teenager. How old were you, and how did it feel to do that? Kasia Szumal: When I came in to the U.S. I was 19. Everything was so big for me, yet I had been through Europe so I was not overwhelmed by the size of the country. I am a very adaptable person, I can feel good anywhere. Walter: Did you know it would be a permanent move at the time? Kasia: My dream was to finish college. My grandmother is a U.S. citizen, yet lived in Poland, and through her I got my visa. When I went for the visa, my goal was to finish college, and I just went with the flow. I was just fine. I knew I would be living in the U.S. My mom was here in Chicago, and my sisters wanted to come to the U.S. and live here, so I knew I would be here for a while. Walter: You are now a naturalized U.S. citizen. When and why did you decide to apply? Kasia: It was something very natural to apply for, and I feel good where I am, I was part of the culture. After five years here it was time for me to apply. As I was riding the train to take the test, I read the questions and came up with answers. I prepared for the test, and picked out three questions to be in the interview, and they asked me those exact three questions. Walter: What was the hardest facet of life in America to adjust to? Kasia: My lack of friends and family here, except for my mom. I am a people person, and I missed just hanging out and talking on the phone to friends and family. I have one brother and two sisters. I felt like going back to Poland where my friends and the rest of my family were. Now I feel I have plenty of friends, more than I could have imagined at the time. 6 Conscious Community - September 2014

Walter: Have you returned to Poland many times since your first visit here? Kasia: Yes, I have visited Poland at least four times. Each visit is different because my friends are changing, I am changing, and Poland is changing. It is a different country than when I left, yet I like going there to enjoy the changes. Walter: How would you compare spiritual life here with spiritual life in Poland? Kasia: For sure it is different. Poland is a catholic country and people follow church rules. Spirituality for me is just what you feel, religion is following the rules. They don’t question the beliefs; there is fear of going to hell. More people in Poland are religious than spiritual. In the U.S. spirituality is different because there is more opportunity for research, meeting new people, and getting the answers you are looking for. In Poland you do not question your religion. In the U.S. you can believe whatever you want, and people will just accept you for who you are. Walter: You have a very important job managing the Conscious Community magazine. How did you start on the path that led you to where you are now? Kasia: When I was 24 I was looking for some direction in my life, and I asked God for some direction because I felt I needed some change in my life. I saw an ad in Yoga Chicago magazine for a movie at the Spiritual Learning Center on Polk Street in the Loop. I went to the movie and stayed afterwards for the discussion. After that, you asked me if I could help with the Spiritual Learning Center programs. I said yes and was hired on the spot, and began a long relationship that has brought me to where I am today. The purchase of The Monthly Aspectarian came a few years later, and fit nicely with our overall plans. At first I was wondering who would be in charge of the magazine. I asked, and you said, “You are.” I had two weeks to put together my first issue and I did. Thank you. I love what I do. Walter: What is the most fun part of your job? Kasia: Bringing people together, helping people to find what they

need, meeting people, hearing people sharing stories of their spiritual journey, and bringing everything together in unity. Walter: What are your goals for the next 10 years? What do you want to accomplish by 2025? What do you want to be doing differently then? Kasia: Where I see myself in 5-10 years is teaching, organizing conferences and expos, and having a family. Where I see myself in 2025: I see myself speaking to large audiences, writing books, talking about spirituality, cocreating the work I am doing now, and being happy. Walter: You have a unique and interesting story to tell. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? Kasia: There is one thing; there are more things that we have in common than separate us, and I am looking for the common denominator, which is love. Thank you for helping me to live my dream. Making my dreams happen makes the living experience more fun and exciting. To the readers I say, “Dream big because you get what you dream.” Kasia Szumal is the Circulation Manager of the award winning magazine Conscious Community, formerly The Monthly Aspectarian, Manager of the Spiritual Learning Center in Chicago, and a coorganizer of The Conscious Connection Conference, which was held in May. She is a healer, Reiki practitioner, and a student of life. If you have any comments or questions, please email: Kasia@ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com.

“Know that what appears to be Love for an ‘other’ is really Love of Self because ‘other’ doesn’t exist. So this innermost Love can be given to no ‘other’. Love of friends is for the sake of Self, not for body to body. True love has no Lover or Beloved because all Love is Love of Self.” Sri Poonja

All About Town…

Chancing Change April 19th, 2014 by Theresa Puskar

“Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely.” – Unknown

In the past month I printed my children’s books, completed my audio program, and moved into a new home. Needless to say, I was unable to attend any of the local events this month. Thus, this time I will not be sharing any “All About Town…” reviews. When you think of “moving” what comes to mind? Chaos? Busy-ness? Change? While we all say that we want our lives to “change” how much are we willing to actually step into the unknown and do so? We watch the world constantly changing around us – the transitions of the seasons, the births and deaths of our loved ones, and the speedy coming and going of old and new technology. While the saying says, “change is inevitable”, it is something that we often resist. Why? Perhaps it is fear of the unknown, or maybe it’s the massive stretch out of our comfort zone. Whatever the cause of our trepidation, the trick is to just do it. When I reflect back on my life, the change I was most terrified of was the walk into motherhood. I literally put off having my daughter until I was almost 40 years old. Why? There were really two reasons. The first of my fears was tied to the change. I had a gypsy spirit in my youth. I flew all over the world. I followed my dreams, and became a professional actress and director – I was doing it all. I knew that having a child would change all of that, and it did. I incessantly asked myself if I was ready. Could I handle the responsibilities, and to be honest, the restrictions that having a child would bring to my life? As I reflect back, I can see that while it did restrict me, I was ready for the change, and the joy, laughter, terror and tears of motherhood far outweigh the physical limitations. 8 Conscious Community - September 2014

Secondly, seeing how much impact parents have on their children’s emotional state of mind, I was acutely aware of the responsibility that parenting brings. I was terrified that I would do it wrong, and ultimately emotionally wound my little girl. In fact, I have recently accredited myself with two graduate degrees - my “MLE” and “PIP”. The MLE is a self-accredited PhD in Many Lives Experienced, and the PIP is my self-accredited Doctorate in PIP – Perfectly Imperfect Parenting. Both were acquired from the Theresa Puskar, This is Your Life University of Self-Imposed Hard Knocks! I spent years during my youth in preparation for parenting. I did years of introspection, reading and therapy. I read all that I could get my hands on about child rearing and child psychology. Then when I finally had my daughter, while I tried to be the “perfect” mother, I was not. With every mistake I’d made, I’d give myself a “psychic emotionally” beating. With every angry word or gesture, with every act of exhaustion and impatience, I felt like a failure. “Who are you to be a parent? You’re still a wounded child yourself! You’re a lousy mother, and you’ll hurt her just as you were hurt.” Then it happened. It was magical. I can see it all as if it were yesterday. On this particular afternoon, I had completely lost it. I’d had several bouts of shouting at my sweet child, watching her jump, her eyes widen as she stared at me in terror each time. With each outburst, I would feel such deep, deep self-loathing - hatred that I thought I had shaken from my mind years ago. The final straw was one last sharp lashing of my tongue. I sat on the bottom step of the front stairwell and wept. “That’s it. I’m a failure as a mom. I shouldn’t have waited until I was forty to have her – I should NEVER have had her.” Then I looked up, the taste of salty tears crept into the corner of my mouth. My darling, three-year old’s teal blue eyes looked deep into mine, “It’s okay, Beautiful. It’s okay!” she said. In that moment just as my tears flooded my eyes seconds before, my mind flooded with memories: »» »»

My daughter and I sitting on the floor at the family farmhouse, finger-painting our entire bodies from head to toe; Finding a miniscule hole in my pantyhose and the two of us hysterically laughing as we shredded them to bits;

»» »»

»»

Getting soaked from head to toe while doing the “Singing In the Rain” umbrella dance; Picking up mounds of freshly fallen snow and eating it, sucking on long, lean icicles in the brisk Chicago winter’s morn; Holding her tight and dancing to Michael Jackson’s FREE WILLY song;

In that one gesture she did, a mirroring of the many times I had comforted her, “It’s okay, Beautiful. It’s okay.” I got that it was okay. I got that I was a good mom. That, while I had made mistakes, through the work that I had done on myself, I did not impose upon her all of the wounding I had once experienced. So the next time you yell at your child for spilling mustard on her new first-worn white dress, or dig your nails into your son’s forearm in response to the fresh muddy boot stains he’s left all over the recently shampooed family room rug, take a moment. Breathe, and please, don’t beat yourself up. Remember all the good that you’ve done, and celebrate the perfectly imperfect parent that you are! Take a moment and reflect back on the times when you chose or were forced into a change during your life. In retrospect, was the experience beneficial to you? More often than not, while many of us resist change, in the end we are grateful for it in our lives. I’m grateful for my beautiful daughter. While I still struggle with the changes that life brings my way, I know that most often they are a good thing. The trick is to surrender to the changes, melting into each with as much joy and ease as possible!

ASTROLOGY BASICS 101 The 12 Zodiac Signs

by Kaye Berjot In last month’s issue, we started out our Astrology Basics 101 series by discussing the Sun, Ascendant and Moon. As a quick reminder, the Sun describes what is taking place, the Ascendant explains how events are being presented, and the Moon explains how you feel about the events that are taking place.

As you read, please remember that we are using the analogy of planting a garden.

As a continuation in our Astrology Basics 101 series we will discuss the 12 zodiac signs and how they work together.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20) is the process of planting the seeds. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) provides the environment where seeds break through the earth and become fertile seedlings (baby plants).

Many of us are familiar with the characteristics of our individual sun signs. You might be tempted to fast forward through the article to find out how things relate to your sign, yet I would like to encourage you to read the entire article. Each sign will relate back to the previous one, and will essentially bridge the gap to the sign that follows. Because the signs work together carrying bits and pieces of information to the sign that follows, I would like to make it known that we all have elements of each sign in our astrological DNA. So what does that mean? It means that somewhere in your chart you have Virgo, Aries, or any other sign characteristic, even when your birth sign (sun sign) is different. In layman’s terms, it means that you exhibit all of the zodiac signs somewhere in your chart. I find it useful to understand how the signs work together as a collective, because each sign functions as a step to move forward to the next sign or step in your chart.

Aries (March 21-April 19) represents the seeds that we as individuals want to plant.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) is where you nurture and protect the seedling in order to promote increased growth. Leo (July 23 – August 22) is the growth phase where the seedling grows upwards and moves closer to the sun. Virgo (August 23 – Sept. 22) is the step where we analyze which plants are productive, and which plants are not productive. Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) is the step where we decide which plants will be harvested. Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) is the stage where we ask the question, “did we produce enough harvest to get us to where we need to go”, or better yet “did we get what we desired?” Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) is the step where we ask, “what have we learned from the process?”

Movement through the zodiac chart is very similar to planting a garden, meaning that in order to get the garden to produce the proper fruits, it’s necessary to take certain actions in a methodical way. Therefore, you must go through one sign in order to get through to the next.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) is the stage where we ask, “how can we build a more solid foundation?”

For this article I am using the analogy of planting a garden with the intent of making it easy to understand how each sign plays a role in the astrology process.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) is the area where we make room for a more stable foundation so that we can plant new seeds in the garden.

To set the tone, I will not be speaking of the traditional characteristics of each sign. This is because many of the characteristics that are attributed to signs are characteristics of the planets that rule them, and not of the signs themselves. In future articles we will speak of the planets that rule the zodiac signs, yet for now we will concentrate on the functions of each sign within the collective process.

Upon movement through all 12 signs the cycle will repeat itself.

10 Conscious Community - September 2014

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) is the stage where we know what we need to do in order to build a more solid foundation.

Summary: Seeds are our ideas, our passions, or can represent our selves, and one thing is certain, each sign has a role to play within the process, and if one sign does not fulfill its responsibility, the garden (process) does not flourish (work). For the most part, it’s a team effort.

From the Heart Choice Conversations by Alan Cohen Do you know anyone who is so firmly fixed on what he or she wants to talk about that you don’t stand a chance to talk about anything else with that person? I know a CEO who is only interested in sales statistics. If you want to talk to him, the conversation must be about spreadsheets, price points and returns on investments. I know another fellow who is into yoga. If you want to discuss gurus, devotional ceremonies, and meditation techniques, he’s there. If not, there is nothing else to talk about. Another guy is a classic narcissist. All he cares to talk about is himself. If the conversation drifts to you, it will be back on him quickly. That’s his subject. While some of the above examples speak of dysfunction, there is an important principle behind these practices. You have the power to establish the ground upon which you communicate with others. Not so much the subject matter, but the kind of energy you value. Many people tell me they have a hard time with their argumentative family, or their spouse’s family, or with depressed and depressing co-workers. “They are so negative,” my clients tell me. “All they want to talk about is bad news and gossip. I can’t stand being around them.” I tell such clients: “These people are moving you to choose the frequency you want to dwell in and hold fast to it.” You do not need to slide into the gutter with them. Invite them to higher ground by staying in your chosen domain. Some will join you, and others will not. That doesn’t matter. What matters is that you hold your space no matter what others choose for themselves. Think for a moment about why you would sacrifice your inner peace to join people who have set up camp in a sewer. Perhaps they are your family, and you feel guilty about not participating in their dark repartee. Yet you have two kinds of family: biological family and spiritual family. In his brilliant book Illusions: The Adventures of A Reluctant Messiah, Richard Bach declares: “The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof.” It is a wonderful thing when your biological family is also your spiritual family. If it isn’t, you must place yourself where you belong. You must gravitate to your just-right tribe. You must take care of your spirit. If your family interactions are tattering your soul, you cannot afford to indulge them. You may need to step away for now. Hopefully, at some point you can reconnect on higher ground. For now, you must establish yourself on higher ground regardless of what they choose for themselves. Send them love, and know they are capable of better. When you have done 12 Conscious Community - September 2014

your part, you invite them to do theirs. You might also indulge in negative interactions because you feel obligated to do so. These are your co-workers, and this is the Christmas Party. Pip pip, good cheer, socialize appropriately. No job is worth the price of your aliveness. I am not suggesting you quit, although that might be a realistic alternative. I am suggesting that you don’t drop into negativity with them. All relationships, interactions, and conversations are like Velcro Tape. The little hooks on one side of the tape fit with the hooks on the other side of the tape, and the flap sticks together. Likewise, your conversations are by agreement. If you agree to go to a dark place, you get to be there. If you do not agree, you get to not be there instead. The power to hook or not hook is entirely yours. No matter what others are choosing for themselves, you have the right power and responsibility to choose for yourself. You might also stay in the dregs because you fear to lose a friend. You have known this person for a long time, you have a history together, and (s)he might be hurt or offended if you don’t spend as much time together as you used to. Yet what was is not what is. If you do not match now, you do not match. People change and grow in different directions. No one is wrong. You are both right, and you both have to be in your right place. Friendships, like marriages, should continue only if both partners choose to be together. If you both want to connect, that’s a good enough reason. If one of you doesn’t want to connect, that’s a good enough reason. Trust that if you follow your spirit you will be in your right place and so will your friend. Here are some ways to create choice conversations: (1) Diplomatically change the topic. (2) Reframe the conversation with kindness: “I know he’s been grumpy, but I am guessing he is still in pain about his divorce.” (3) Direct truth: “I am not really into politics or gay-bashing. Stretch Your Body, Expand Your Mind by Monica Tunnell, RMT, RYT

Yoga as a Window to The Soul “Yoga is the cessation of the movements of the mind. Then there is abiding in the Seer’s own form.” ― Patañjali, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

In the Eastern world, the path through yoga has had a different road…the physical practice, or asana, a single limb of the practice, has always been one of the most minimalized portions, and meant to prepare the practitioner for the purpose of sitting in long periods of meditation where one can evolve and grow spiritually and connect with the Divine. Yet here in the Western World, yoga has taken a different approach…a focus on the physical has been placed first, or has taken priority to that of the deeper and spiritual pursuits of the other seven limbs. Despite this vastly different starting point for those who practice yoga in the West, I can say that it still serves as a window to the deeper, more esoterical practices that allow our souls to evolve and grow spiritually. In my years as a yoga teacher as well as the producer of a yoga and music festival, I have seen one transformation after another as the result of a stumbling onto what one initially perceived as a physical practice meant to improve the condition of the body. It is always said that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear, and I have seen this countless times through the window of yoga. So many students have passed through my classes, and I am always deeply touched by those who are new to the practice, as it is delightful to witness their transformation from the very first class they attend to where they end up landing on their journey. People on all journeys, from all backgrounds, all ages, all religious faiths and all ability levels enter the yoga room with one commonality: they will be spending the duration of the class engaging in asana practice, sharing the breath and the energy of those who share the class and practice with them for that given period of time. Sharing that energy; that breath; that collective consciousness; combined together in a small space and time, is indeed powerful and in many cases a springboard to an experience or journey that is transformational in nature. Such is the power of the window of yoga. Regardless of what one is going through, or the reason one attends a class for the first time, there is always a trigger that begs 14 Conscious Community - September 2014

the student to delve into a deep exploration of something new. It could be an insight that comes during the pose, or perhaps a reading or poem, or a meditation shared at the end of the class, preparing the students for savasana, or deep relaxation. For another, it could be simply the community and camaraderie that is shared among the students of the class as one continues to attend. The sharing of those ideas among others who are also on a path of exploration can be profound, and often leads to the realization of the broad spectrum of options one has to explore. For others, it could just be the physical transcendence of boundaries previously created for or among themselves. Regardless of the trigger, the window will then open, and the student will inevitably grow. At a time where our culture is spiritually hungry, but lacking enough outlets for that expression or experience, yoga can serve as a bridge to heal this gap…a safe platform for spiritual exploration that goes way beyond our traditional religious institutions. The spirituality of yoga is a refreshing encounter, for as with the physical practice, it meets you right where you are, encouraging exploration devoid of judgment and condemnation. Perhaps it is through traveling that bridge that one discovers a new and beneficial spiritual practice that can be applied to life, or perhaps it is simply that the exploration takes one back to a deeper connection with a faith foundation that has been challenged or impacted in a negative way. It is different for everyone, but transformational nonetheless. It is challenging to find a community of likeminded, inquisitive spirits who are lacking judgment and open to discussing new ideas. Yoga builds a bridge of community that transcends both beliefs and borders. I watch it happen in studios, at events, on Facebook, on Twitter, and even in local communities in places such as coffee shops, health food stores, bookstores, and more. It is a beautiful site to behold…that community created by the connector of yoga. It creates a space for new friendships, new community, new explorations and unconditional love. It provides a vast support system throughout the globe that is accessible in a single click. It gives us the foundation with which to begin to build a new humanity, raising conscious vibration. The soul of a yoga community feeds the spirit and nourishes the collective consciousness, allowing seekers to springboard into life-changing endeavors of body, mind and soul. We are blessed to have such a window to climb through…a window that will lead each climber out into the vast and open space of uncharted lands and soulful.

The Shared Heart

N ew D i m e n s i o n s o f R e l a t i o n s h i p by Joyce and Barry Vissell

Love Holds No Grievances Our dear friend and talented musician, Charley Thweatt, just completed a new CD called, Love Remains. On this CD is an older song of his called “Love Holds no Grievances,” using words from A Course in Miracles. I find myself listening to this song over and over again, to hear the simple message that our grievances or resentments toward another person will hide the light of the world from us, and prevent us from feeling the happiness and peace that we were meant to feel in this life. This year, I have had three experiences of the pain that can happen when a person holds a grievance or grudge and will not work through it. The first is with a woman friend whose very best friend texted her, saying she wanted space from the relationship, yet would not say why. These two women had been meeting several times a week, and walking together for years. They had a very deep relationship and helped each other through difficult times. The woman who received the text was completely left in the dark, and still is after eight months of silence. She has no idea what she did to deserve this rejection without any communication. Over these eight months, I have seen this woman go through the almost unbearable pain of feeling discarded. The next experience was with a very close friend who received an email from a male friend with the pronouncement, “I feel complete.” He ended the relationship with our friend without ever being willing to clear up whatever problem was there. Our friend still does not know what prompted this email. Attempts on his part to call this person have been ignored. He also felt discarded. Last month we received an email from what we thought was a friend with the subject heading, “Ending the friendship with you.” In this email the boundary was clearly stated that we were not to contact him in any way. He explained that it was nothing we did, yet who we are. There had been an issue with this man, yet we thought it had been resolved, and we were moving forward. It is so painful to be suddenly rejected without willingness for meaningful dialogue. A few days ago, I was in our natural foods store waiting in line to be checked out. The cashier was talking in a rather loud voice to the woman who was bagging the groceries. He was telling her all the things he disliked about a certain person, and that he wanted him out of his life. He further told her that this person 18 Conscious Community - September 2014

had called to apologize and had tried to reach out in a positive way by offering to watch his dog while the man went away. The man went on and on that nothing would ever allow him to open up to this person again. Of course I don’t know the details, as I was just a customer in line hearing all of this, yet I do know that the bagger looked very sad as the man kept talking to her. I know also that it was unpleasant for me to be hearing him, and I sensed the same for the others in line. His grievances were dimming the light energy in a store that is supposed to be very conscious. Barry and I are eternal believers in the power of healing to bring back love even into the most failed relationships. We strive to never give up on love. Each relationship and connection is precious to us. We encourage everyone who comes to us for counseling to go for the love. Sometimes a marriage is so broken and the hurt so deep that the two people do not want to stay together. Even in this situation with a couple divorcing, there can still be love and forgiveness, and an honoring of all the good that was there from the beginning. Sometimes the most touching and open hearted sessions are those in which two people are saying goodbye to one another and moving on in their lives. They may not see each other again, yet the love that was felt by saying goodbye and appreciating what was good will remain in their hearts forever. Someday, if they meet again, they might genuinely hug and greet each other. I always learn a lot about life and relationships from our dogs. At one point in our lives, we owned five golden retrievers, four of which (or whom?) were female. Almost always the five dogs got along tremendously. Yet sometimes one might find a bone that the other one wanted, and there would be loud growling and showing of teeth. They never hurt each other, yet the show would be impressive. This fierceness would last perhaps fifteen seconds, then they would stop, smell each other, and resume life as usual. Ten minutes later, they would be snuggled up next to each other sound asleep. They expressed their feelings, then let it all go, and went for the closeness and love. So what happens if a friend suddenly rejects you by email or text? Yes, it hurts very much, and it is important to feel your feelings. It may be important to seek professional help if the rejection brings up feelings of unworthiness or other big issues in you. In time you will realize that a rejection without the willingness to dialogue is not about you, yet is about the other person and

what has been triggered in them from their past. Try to have compassion for them, and do the inner work to hold that person in your heart with love. Even remembering one positive memory will help. By doing this you are keeping your heart a safe place for all beings. Don’t close that person out just because he/she has closed you out. I like the anonymous quote: “Holding resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” This poison can negatively affect every aspect of your life. Make a commitment towards love and clarity in your relationships. One of the closing songs on Charley’s new CD tells us: “Everything’s an opportunity to forgive, and I choose peace.” May we all choose peace.

“The only true liberty is in the service of that which is beyond all limits, beyond all definitions, beyond all human appreciation: that which is All, and which therefore is no limited or individual thing: The All is no-thing, for if it were to be a single thing separated from all other things, it would not be All.” Thomas Merton

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS September... Tying Up Loose Ends by Elizabeth Summers As we write, say, even think the Number of a particular month its influence of energy returns to us from the Universe. Perhaps not in a blatant way but be on alert for the subtle influence of each month’s themes. As we move into the energy of September, our ninth calendar month of the year, even Mother Earth knows it is a time to let go of aspects of Nature. The Number Nine is a Number of completions. This energy sounds a bugle call that it is “all over but the shoutin!” The energy of September is about letting things go, finishing projects, getting ready for the energy of new starts in October. Interestingly, folks can become “housecleaning fools” under the Nine energy letting go of people and places as well as objects found throughout the house. September can bring a huge influx of merchandise to the doors of thrift shops and Goodwill stores. The energy of the Number Nine is about humanitarianism, service, teaching, wisdom and going within to find one’s answers in life. This Number may be called the “Mother Theresa Number” as it is about caring and selfless service without any prejudice. This Number Nine influence brings forth all the energies of compassion, philanthropy and tolerance. Don’t’ be surprised if you find yourself focusing on some humanitarian venture in the month of September. Very domestic feelings may pop up in your psyche creating a desire to entertain all your friends, cook and/or bake yummy foods to share, redecorate parts of your home and just plain getting ready to hibernate for another few months. Let us focus on the personality and experiences connected with the Number Nine influence.

As a birthday Number of Nine, Eighteen or Twenty-Seven, reactions that are hasty in temper, impulsive and very independent bring a desire to be one’s own master. Number Nine temperament likes to be looked up to and recognized as the “head of the household”. Although resourceful and excellent in organization, they must feel as though they have the fullest control or they loose heart and stand aside lettings thing just go to pieces. The challenge is to find a place for oneself that has some direct benefit to others. There is also, an element of sacrifice that demands one to learn forgiveness, unconditional love and humility. Having said all of this, the Number Nine is considered a fortunate Number to be born under provided the person does not ask for a peaceful or monotonous life. There are great periods of uncertainty in one’s life along with ultimately fulfilling experiences. Peculiarly, Number Nine energy must often wait alertly and eagerly for doors to open in ways that are basically beyond one’s personal effort and control. During the middle thirty years of life for the Number Nine, there is a continuous shedding of the old, dry metaphorical skins of the past. A balancing of old accounts and the process of tying up loose ends dealing with Karmic holdovers from other lifetimes and places is constantly occurring. Astrologically, the Sun in the twelfth house of Karma is common in the Number Nine’s charts. With this personality one can lean towards a desire for a mate who likewise is of the active and somewhat aggressive type. In this relationship, control of each other can develop into real frictions!

Since Number Nine is the culmination of all the previous eight Number issues and their lessons to learn, is it any wonder that one word connected to Number Nine is “drama!”

However, many Number Nine’s have had their hearts broken as their compassionate natures allow them to be emotionally manipulated.

This vibration ties up in a neat bundle, wisdom that now will be used to serve humanity. Souls influenced by this energy, either as a Birthday Number, Life Path Number or Maturity Number which is calculated from Numerological formulas, all Number Nines are here to be of service in some capacity.

In addition, issues of abuse, physical, emotional or psychological must be guarded against. Mars, astrologically the corresponding planet for Number Nine, is the god of war and Number Nine temperaments can fall right into its traps. To learn to be involved while remaining emotionally neutral and detached is a major feat for Number Nines to accomplish.

Letters in a birth name of “I” and “R”, especially “ R” bring endings, drama and high emotions to a lifetime. The letter “ R” equates to the Moon Card in Tarot which says “caution and watch your back, aware of relationships where envy and jealousy may cause problems”. The letter “I” is not so intense. 20 Conscious Community - September 2014

In Western Numerology, humans move through nine year cycles of patterns, issues and trends. This formula is called one’s Personal Year vibration. Any project started under a Nine Personal Year, either business or personal, will most likely be

“re-booted” anew as the Personal Year One of the next cycle begins to arrive. Many opportunities and ideas can be worked on in a Nine year but know, action will really move forward in the next cycle. Included in this fact are marriage ceremonies which should also be avoided under a Nine Year. Since we humans as well as Mother Nature move in patterns, it is important to know that the Number Nine is not an energy of permanence. When our personal pattern in a Nine year arrives, people have a tendency to pass through our lives. If a person is in a personal Nine influence according to a Personal year formula, endings will occur, old loves can reenter for a “final fling” and loved ones as well as animals may leave. Keep in mind, this is an “ending” vibration. Anything “started” under a Nine influence does not last or needs to be “redone” when year Number One rolls around. Having said that, the adage “God closes a door but opens a window” is most appropriate. Do watch your health in September. It is not uncommon for unusual aches and pains to arrive drawing one’s attention to parts of the body where “stuck” emotional past life trauma memories are being stored and need to be addressed. Energy and body workers are the best bet to set these issues free from one’s physical and etheric body.

Through all the twists and turns that September might bring into your life, just know that all is Divine and let’er rip! As Les Brown, the band leader of ole once said “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars”. Spiritually guiding clients since 1988, Elizabeth Summers provides practical information using the ancient NUMBER CODE INTERPRETATIONS, Astrology and Tarot associations. Yoga

From My Experience by Cynthia Gran

The Coverings

“I really want to see you Lord, I really want to be with you… but it takes so long.” - My Sweet Lord, George Harrison

Yoga and Ayurveda are rich treasures of perhaps the world’s first holistic health paradigms. They incorporate healing for our many levels of being. One model is like an onion with various coverings, or in Sanskrit, koshas. The Bhagavad Gita tells us that a yogi is one who cuts through these coverings and unites with his inner world into absorption, or samadhi. Ayurveda variously translates as the “science” or “knowledge” of “longevity” or “self-healing.” Holistic self-healing begins with self-awareness when we realize changes are needed and take steps toward them. A holistic healer can guide a person, but one must learn their own capabilities, which foods are best, which activities are valuable and what cognitive controls to employ. Concepts such as body/mind/spirit that contemporary holistic health applies derive from these coverings. Holistic health is indeed care of the body, mind and spirit. However, yoga and its complementary sciences and philosophies are broader and deeper than three levels. In yoga, Ayurveda and Vedanta five coverings are described plus the innermost Self. Each covering reveals a deeper place within, until revelation is uncovered. Beneath them resides Atman, the innermost, imperishable, unstained Light of Pure Consciousness, Brahman, the Self. That is, the koshas cover the Indwelling Lord yearned for in the quote above. Each kosha is described as a mayakosha. Maya loosely translates as “illusion.” Maya plus kosha suggests a “veil,” or soul-created illusory covering. Each layer obscures the one beneath. Each mayakosha can be pierced, if the seeker persistently reduces and conquers karmas brought into this life. “Yoga is a journey of the self, through the self, to the Self.” - Swami Veda Bharati The journey is from the outer world where we strive to be individuals, through body, energy, mind, discrimination, and bliss coverings into the Self. We think of ourselves as separate. And we are distinct. But, this paradigm requires different thinking. We cannot truly separate from others, because the human condition is 22 Conscious Community - September 2014

interdependent. Under all the coverings/illusions of the world we are all One, once the individual absorbs into the Self of all. The philosophy of the five koshas is described in the Taittiriya Upanishad estimated to have been written between the fifth and seventh centuries BCE. From greatest to subtlest, they are as follows: 1. Annamayakosha is the outermost level and includes the body and senses. Anna translates as “food” so it’s literally the covering made of food. Much attention is placed on the body: food, shelter, clothing, appearance, etc. Most people identify exclusively with the body. We are so busy with its requirements, we lose sight of time, further veiling the Self /Indweller. Yogis deliberately take good care of the body, a precious tool, but distinguish themselves from it, which is necessary for clearing karma and reaching the inner goal. 2. Pranamayakosha is the second covering. Prana is energy, chi, breath and/or spirit. The Latin word spiritus sometimes translates as “breath.” Energy/breath/spirit links body and mind. Breath accessed consciously, via pranayama exercises, improves vigor in the body and sharpens the mind. Always moving, prana carries vitality to and throughout the body, remaining active during sleep. As the vital force, prana is present only when there is life. 3. Manomayakosha, the level of the mind, is vast. It encompasses the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious realms. Most people conjecture the brain holds the mind. But the mind is not held within. In fact, the mind regularly travels outside of the body. “All the body is in the mind, but not all the mind is in the body.” - Swami Rama Imagine you’re walking a beach; now shoveling snow. Your mind just travelled outside your body to different times and places. Mind also travels with memories, which are stored in the mind. Yogis strive to be ever present, harnessing mind activity, a considerable task. Yogis say illnesses occur first in the mind before they manifest outward in the body. Therefore, by extension, self-healing begins here as we release suffering from the mind.

4. Vijnanamayakosha, the fourth level, is sometimes called buddhi or knowledge. Here lie human intellect, wisdom, and discrimination. Discrimination is greatly valuable to all truth seekers and the yogi sharpens it like a sword. The intuition also resides here and is symbolized as a mirror that receives light from the deeper levels and reflects it outward onto the mind. 5. Anandamayakosha, the deepest of the five levels, is called bliss. Ananda encircles the Atman, glowing as a lampshade radiates light from the source within. It’s so close to the source, it’s glorious. We humans seek joy outside, but this bliss is not from worldly delights, rather from the proximity to everlasting joy and equanimity within. Finally, the innermost place: although indescribable, we all experience glimpses of euphoria and ecstatic joy. During sublime moments we feel content and close to God. Gradually we expand those unencumbered feelings, heeding their ephemeral call with full attention. When we understand all our levels of being, and find the source of all life within, boundless healing resources become available and we begin to gain control over our health and life. Questions for contemplation: Can I turn off the outer world and tune into my inner world? Am I ready to access intuition, wisdom, and glimpses of Soul? Cynthia Gran loves to cook and garden. She teaches superconscious meditation and offers clear, supportive Ayurvedic consultations. Co-owner of Annapurna Holistic Services, she can be reached at cynthy3@gmail.com.

Sound Matters: by Steven Halpern

AMBIENT ALCHEMY

A Spellbinding Listening Experience

As I write this, I’m packing to fly off to Joshua Tree Retreat Center for a major international conference, where I’ll be performing a Friday night concert, then sonically support Dr. Steve Greer at www.ContactInTheDesert.com. I’m sure I’ll have some interesting stories to share in my next article.

On some of the tracks, I overdub on Diamond’s composition. On other tracks, he overdubs on my composition. This synergy proves that at least sometimes, two heads are better than one. This album includes some relaxing tracks, and some that are more energetic. You’ll want to experiment on your own.

Meanwhile, I’ll ask you this question: Other than Close Encounters of the Third Kind, can you think of any movie that featured music being used to facilitate contact with another civilization? There wasn’t any in Contact, The Arrival, or E.T., which are the first titles that come to my mind. Let me know.

I believe the music will take you on a magical journey, and I welcome your feedback. I would suggest, however, that you not listen while driving.

There’s no easy segue, so here ‘tis. My latest release, AMBIENT ALCHEMY, is an extraordinary new album that I want to let you know about before it’s released to the general public. It creates a spellbinding listening experience that reminds us why we love listening to music with headphones on, and our eyes closed. <Please insert cover image within this paragraph> This album is a collaboration between Michael Diamond and me, with Michael Manring, famed Windham Hill bass virtuoso, as our special guest on six tracks. The instrumentation includes multiple keyboards, soaring guitar and guitar synth, and fretless bass, often played with an E-Bow, which produces some other-worldly and gorgeous melodic lines. The lush sound tracks and swirling layers of ethereal sound may create pictures in your mind’s eye. Headphone listening reveals Diamond’s intricately detailed production skills. Both Michaels’ musicianship “takes the recording where very few are capable of going”. (Will Ackerman, Grammy winning producer and Windham Hill Records founder.)

24 Conscious Community - September 2014

The official street date of AMBIENT ALCHEMY is 9/9/14, at which time it will be available from Amazon, iTunes, and other vendors. However, it is currently available at my website: StevenHalpern.com/ AmbientAlchemy. You can also enjoy a YouTube video at http://youtu. be/1XY6meqGREg. (Editor’s note: This is a gorgeous, colorful, hauntingly beautiful and relaxing video! A Must See!) Until next time, keep listening and stay tuned, Steven Halpern Steven Halpern is a Grammy® nominated recording artist and pioneering sound healer. Michael Diamond is a keyboardist/ guitarist/producer and a respected music reviewer for over 30 years.

How to Clear and Protect Your Energy We are made of energy and so is everything around us. We all hold positive and negative energy. If you have ever been around an angry person you have probably experienced feeling or taking in their negative energy and becoming depressed or angry yourself. If you’ve been around a happy person you probably have felt their positive energy and felt uplifted and happy. If you are a very sensitive person you may have a more intense reaction. These are just examples of everyday occurrences. If you did a ritual of protection in the morning to shield yourself from the negative energies you would inspire the people who are negative, put them in a good mood and not take in their energy. One of the best ways to protect yourself from outside energy is through visualization. Albert Einstein believed in energy and was known to have said, “Thought is energy, to create it, just use your imagination.” The easiest and quickest way is by simply surrounding yourself with white light, and imagining a protective field being established around your physical body from inside and pushing those unwanted energies out. Imagine only positive energy being able to penetrate the force field and repelling all the negative. This way you’re clearing, cleansing and setting your shield of protection at the same time.

Clearing, Cleansing & Setting Protection 1. Sit in a comfortable position, alleviating any stress in your body. 2. Close your eyes and take in a deep cleansing breath. Release the breath through your mouth and push all the air out of your body. Take in 3 deep breaths through your nose. Imagine a white light from the universe coming into your lungs and going into your solar plexus. 3. While exhaling, imagine all the stress, anxiety and negativity you have leaving your body through your feet and into the earth. Picture it going out into the universe in gray smoke where it can dissipate and no longer do harm to 26 Conscious Community - September 2014

anyone. 4. With each inhale, imagine the light collecting at your solar plexus beginning to enlarge and going out through all your muscles, organs, hands and feet. Imagine your whole body filling up with white light. 5. As the white light grows imagine any left over negative stresses, anxieties and unwanted energies being forced out of your body through your feet and going into the ground. Release it out into the universe as gray smoke dissipating into nothing and being pushed out of your body by the growing white light. 6. Imagine the light growing so large it comes out of your body about 2 feet in diameter. See the last aspects of the unwanted energy floating out into the universe where it too can dissipate and no longer do harm to anyone. 7. Take one more very deep breath and see a strong gold light, shimmering down into your body to your solar plexus. See this light quickly grow and pass through the white light you have established as your shield. It protects you and the shield of white light. Think of this as the hard outer shell protecting you and your white light shield around you. Now you are fully protected and cleansed of all negative energy. Practice this every morning before going out on your day. It will soon be so natural to you and you will be raising your consciousness everyday. Caroline Dabrowski has always had an interest in holistic healing methods from yoga, meditation, reiki as well as other forms of alternative healing. She believes that through these methods we can find inner peace, happiness, and getting in touch with our purpose in life. She is currently studying holistic living and would love to share her experiences with you.

CyberWeave: Spirituality and the Internet by Mary Montgomery

Dark Night of the Soul OK, I admit it. I’m a card-carrying member of the Pollyanna Club. One of my favorite songs should be “Always Look at the Bright Side of Life.” Sure I’ve had my ups and downs. I was blindsided when the partnership in my newspaper chain imploded and I lost my share of the business. I felt sucker punched when my husband of 20 years suddenly asked for a divorce. Those were difficult times, yet I was always able to dip into my quiver of spiritual practices, and find the capacity to touch into the inner core of joy that I carried with me. I knew there would always be other jobs, other business opportunities. Although it took a while, I was eventually able to connect with my wonderful significant other, a man who stands strong both in his spirituality, and his love for me. On July 30th, I received a call from the Breast Imaging Center at Rush University Medical Center. That routine mammogram that I recently had? Well, it wasn’t as routine as I so blithely thought it was. The radiologist saw some things she didn’t like, labeled the exam “Incomplete. Need additional imaging evaluation.” I was instructed to call my primary care doctor, and get an order for a more in-depth mammogram at their diagnostic imaging center. Even though I research afterlife issues; after all my last two columns were about the recent Afterlife Conference; I was not prepared for the possibility that I could be going there any time soon. I fell right off my Pollyanna pedestal, and straight into the Heart of Darkness. I found myself in the midst of what is so aptly called the Dark Night of the Soul. I felt like I was coming face to face with my own mortality, and, as much as I have studied the subject, I was and am very unprepared. That day, I was taking photos of teens from around the country, who had come together with Chicago Area Project’s Youth as Resources young people for a National Youth Summit. I took that call right after the icebreaker where everyone introduced themselves, and rated their energy and mental state on a scale of 1-10. I had just told the crowd that because of their energy and joy, I was at a 10. After that phone call, though, I plunged right down to zero. I cried my way home, and promptly let my ego get the better of me, when I reacted negatively to a neighbor’s complaint about water that hit the side of her garage when I watered my 40 Conscious Community - September 2014

herb garden. Oh, great! I’m not only feeling bad because I had screwed up all that “You Create Your Own Reality” stuff. Now, I felt guilty because I fell off my spiritual bandwagon too! Since that time, I’ve done a lot of crying, and have written some choice words to my guides in my spiritual journal. I have also had the presence of mind to grab on to the lifelines that are my gal friends. Many have assured me that they, too, had to have second mammograms, ultrasounds, or MRIs, and came out with a clean bill of health. I have also used many of those spiritual skills that I have honed over the years: meditating, EFT, etc., and I am trying to keep positive. Yet as I write this, I just don’t know. I’m calmer and more centered now, yet… By the time you read this, however, the verdict should be in. So, I’ve decided to use this column as therapy of sorts—yet I think it is therapy that can help you too. Let’s face it. Many positive manifestation techniques really don’t address the Dark Night of the Soul. Those that do often claim that these Dark Nights are created when we let our unconscious, or even past life baggage affect our current reality. Others claim that we are not loving enough, not trusting enough, not being nonjudgmental enough. And some claim that we’ve preplanned these Dark Nights so that we can grow. Hmmm… I’m a scholar and I write this column, so I decided to explore the topic by doing an Internet search on Dark Night of the Soul. Here are some highlights of my exploration: The idea of a Dark Night of the Soul originated with St. John of the Cross (1542-1591). St. John of the Cross was a Spanish saint, mystic and poet. The phrase originated in Christianity, yet as Ananda Maha of Agama Yoga points out in her YouTube video on the topic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOAb3oiViDs), Dark Night of the Soul has been largely adopted by many other spiritual paths. She states: “Buddhists use it, Sufi mystics use it… Kabbalah… It is used in many, many spiritual practices because it describes in a very poetic, very metaphoric way, truth, a stage of evolution that is quite, quite difficult to approach elsewise.” (Sic) It turns out that modern definitions of Dark Night differ from that of St. John of the Cross and other Christian mystics. Daniel

J. Castellano (www.arcaneknowledge.org/catholic/darknight. htm) points out that we moderns “commonly misconstrue it as a “crisis of faith.” St. John and other Catholic mystics, according to Castellano, “did not flirt with apostasy or hesitate in their assent of faith, yet instead felt an alienation from God due to acute consciousness of their unworthiness.” Now that’s quite a 180° from the current prevalent belief that we are, in fact, one with the divine, and therefore very worthy! Castellano is right. Most of today’s Dark Night definitions focus on “crisis of faith.” And quite frankly, I don’t have a problem with that. There are many definitions out there, yet here are the two that I found most fruitful:

Whoa! Really? One of the hallmarks of the Dark Night is vividly described in an essay by Brian Alger (http://exploring-life.ca/ dark-night-of-the-soul-1/). Alger states: “Spiritual darkness is a vast interior landscape of loneliness and abandonment. Solitude is our only companion in a dark night. Even in the midst of our loved ones and friends we persist in feeling desperately alone… It is this pervasive sense of abandonment and loneliness in the midst of a crowd that is, for me, the essence of the dark night of the soul.” That sounds very self-centered and egocentric to me. At least that’s where I found myself when I plunged into my heart of darkness. It was all about the ego me. I was filled with the primal fear of extinction. I doubted my connection to the divine—and even that the divine existed. Hey! Isn’t that what my ego has been trying to tell me all along: “Hey, honey! Ditch that other jive and let me take control!” I’m not saying that the Dark Night of the Soul isn’t a valuable experience (especially in retrospect). However, I am saying that it doesn’t seem to be a place that you should linger in for too long—then it becomes more like clinical depression. Once you recognize that you are in the midst of one of those Dark Nights of the Soul, it’s time to start looking for a way out. It is time to start looking for the light.

Eckhart Tolle (www.eckharttolle.com/newsletter/october-2011): In response to a question, Eckhart provided this definition of Dark Night of the Soul: “It is a term used to describe what one could call a collapse of a perceived meaning in life…an eruption into your life of a deep sense of meaninglessness. The inner state in some cases is very close to what is conventionally called depression. Nothing makes sense anymore, there’s no purpose to anything. Sometimes it’s triggered by some external event… Or you had built up your life, and given it meaning… and the meaning that you had given your life for some reason collapses.” Right on, Eckhart! In my case, it is a combination of the two. Metaphysics-for-Life (www.metaphysics-for-life.com/dark-night-of-the-soul.html): This site provides a visual: there is a picture of a caterpillar, the cocoon, and the butterfly. “Just as the caterpillar must surrender to the process of pupating to become a butterfly, we must surrender to the Dark Night of the Soul; to surrender the Ego Mind so the Heart Mind can emerge. While pupating, the caterpillar is no longer a caterpillar—yet it is not yet a butterfly. It is blind, deaf, and cannot move or do anything! Let go and let the forces of nature transform who you THINK you are, so you can remember who you REALLY are.” The Metaphysics-for-Life site also contains a video, created by Humanity Healing Network (http://humanityhealing.net/) that beautifully describes the stages and eventual rewards of the “crisis of faith” Dark Night. Two quotes from that video (which can also be found at The Mind With Heart Channel on YouTube (www.youtube.com/user/heartcompass): “Sadness flies on the wings of the morning and out of the heart of darkness comes the light” – Jean Giraudoux, and “The divine touches the soul to renew it and to ripen it, in order to make it divine.” – St. John. Most of the websites that focus on the Dark Night of the Soul laud the experience. The Dark Night section on the Esoteric, Metaphysical and Spiritual Database (www.in5d.com/the-darknight-of-the-soul.html), for example, states: “The true blessing of the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ is the spiritual cleansing that you receive. When you have reached the ‘Dark Night of the Soul,’ you have reached your lowest point in this incarnation. To that I say, ‘Congratulations!’” According to this site, “many people experience the loss of ego for the first time in their life during the Dark Night.”

Oh, oh! I’m running out of space again! Stay tuned until next month. Am I still in the throes of my Dark Night? Am I still in the middle of my health scare? Yes or no, I will explore some of the advice I found on finding your way out of the darkness, and back into the light. In the meantime, I think I’ll listen to that “Always Look at the Bright Side of Life” YouTube Video (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=SJUhlRoBL8M). After all, if Brian (Monty Python’s Life of Brian/AKA Jesus) can sing while on the cross of his Dark Night of the Soul, maybe I can too. Then, as in the song, maybe I can remember: “If life seems jolly rotten There’s something you’ve forgotten And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing When you’re feeling in the dumps Don’t be silly chumps Just purse your lips and whistle - that’s the thing.” My Advice: Well, actually, I’d like to ask for your advice. Have you experienced your own Dark Night of the Soul? How did it affect you in the long run? What helped bring you out of your darkness, and into the light? The month begins with the intense focus of Saturn and Mars in Scorpio. Strong drive and will power under pressure can produce excellent results by channeling heightened creative energy. A likely but less palatable outcome is subterfuge by those who seek glory, plan revenge, or otherwise undermine the situation. With Venus challenging Mars from Leo for the first week, emotional drama is on high. I call it a spicy tango. We may see a mythic drama play out as powerful women and men of good heart step outside the patriarchal control, challenging the system. This could 44 Conscious Community - September 2014

Several planetary sign changes take place the first half of the month. Mercury moves into fair-play Libra late on the 1st, initiating numerous conversations, negotiations and points of view. As it moves into the range of the world-shaking UranusPluto Square in the second week, the Libran Scales tip in some newsworthy way. The sweep of destiny is in the news, with unprecedented mergers and liaisons changing the playing field. Some of this activity may be fueled by outspoken revolutionary spirit and by new technologies. There are likely to be public demonstrations, possibly extended ones. Some angry rabblerousers and rogue elements will make trouble, but others dialogue for win-win solutions. Mercury changes again into Scorpio on the 27th, slowing down for an October retrograde. Venus enters reserved, yet sensual Virgo on the 5th, promising a lovely fall season. We evaluate our priorities so the best of our attention is applied to make improvements in our lives. Venus gracefully moves into her own sign, Libra, on the 29th. Mars enters sporty Sagittarius on the 13th like a racehorse out of the gate, moving beyond the range of Saturn’s discipline. We’ve accomplished a lot, contending with some rigorous issues. We are glad to be freed up and let loose to roam and seek new goals to inspire us. It’s like going for a good run or a great travel adventure after being cooped up in the office on a deadline. What distant horizons beckon? Mars has the motivation, and Venus the savvy to make it happen. Fall Equinox is on the 22nd, an annual power day marking a change of season. enters Libra, The Scales. We look at both sides of the coin, of the ledger, or any issue on the table. Pluto puts its shadowy finger on some issue as it turns to forward motion on this Equinox, after five and a half months of retrograde motion. This will unleash some major issue in the deconstruction and reconstruction of old, outmoded systems that need to meet basic standards of Earthhonoring sustainability. We are in such a potent time of change, heading toward some amazing breakthroughs.

The morning brings news of import. It may take some days to recognize the implications. Discussions and meetings catch us up, and alert us to any changes in the plan as we hunker down to make good progress. Genius energy is still on tap, which we can use to tune into significant details that can make all the difference. We are experiencing the impact of the Uranus-Pluto Square full on today, with the Moon conjunct Pluto around mid-day and setting off fiery Uranus sparks around midnight. Leadership is on display, demonstrating both the ends of the spectrum. High-profile persons may take credit for or undermine the successful work of others. Egos are on blatant display, representing power brokers resistant to initiatives that support public and environmental welfare. Leaders of heart stand up to this old guard, continuing the high drama on the global level. Power to the people! How are you applying this to your life? What project are you working on? Does it meet the forwardthinking criteria of the times? What issues are you standing up for as part of the collective awakening?

Monday, September 1

If you want something with enough desire power, and don’t get in your own way, it can happen. Ask for any information you need. Cooperation wins the day, while keeping everyone on track. Skills are honed to a fine edge for super results today. The window is small, as the Moon goes Void of Course at 10:41am for a short hour and a half. Sustain the energy through that window and see what happens. The Moon into Sagittarius at 12:17pm adds encouragement and a buoyant optimism that motivates us well into Wednesday.

Tuesday, September 2

This can be a great day, right out of the starting gate this morning. Determine to have some fun and play. With a full roster of fire signs on tap, we can make anything fun. Make time with your loved ones. Do something special. Joke around, praise them, be a happiness generator and a positive inspiration, like a coach or cheerleader, whatever you are doing. This is the essence of good management. Shrewd, unconventional strategies can produce exceptional outcomes. Creative juices are flowing in abundance. Discover and apply your genius. Don’t get ahead of yourself. Walk your talk and follow up idea with application. Some people will be all about the great inspiration, rushing ahead without watching their steps, tripping over their own two feet. Don’t miss the boat. Delicate timing and attention to detail is the key. Keep your eye on the ball and watch for inviting loopholes that bring everything together with a flash of serendipity, especially around 5pm. There are super-natural clues everywhere when we appreciate the finely tuned wisdom of Nature. Be delighted. This also has a promise to be a special date night.

Wednesday, September 3

The morning continues the forward momentum and the Mona Lisa-like clues from Mother Nature. Are we really seeing new colors in the air? Feel the joy of being alive, on this Earth, at such time. Yes, it truly is a Big Moment in the Galaxy. Wow, what a time we are experiencing. Are you loving it? If not, why not? Joy is one of the greatest gifts we can give now. Seek out moments of joy today. “It takes life to love life!” wrote famed American poet Edgar Lee Masters. Take back your life. The Moon goes Void of Course at 1:07pm, extending the joy and creativity through the afternoon, like a note that continues to reverberate after the song is played, in the pause of appreciation before the applause. Or like the OM that you hear vibrating in the deep silence of the heart after it has been chanted. When the Moon enters Capricorn at 5:15pm, we square ourselves to proceed with the business at hand. If we have listened to that reverberating note, we feel a new quality pervading the energy fields.

Friday, September 5

Many experience a restless night with wakeful minds and awakening hearts. The drama is exciting but rather exhausting at the same time. It’s important to pay special attention to loved ones, especially this morning. Send flowers or a card for no particular reason. The Moon goes Void at 10:09am, slowing down the pace, yet sustaining our energy enough to get a few more i’s dotted and t’s crossed. Venus enters task-oriented Virgo soon after the Void period begins. Once we take stock of what has been accomplished and what yet needs to be done, we will likely reset our priorities and review our plans, based on recent developments. This is a good use of the day, but do make some time to have fun. A Friday party feeling uplifts the spirits and creates good relationships with colleagues. My office used to have a chocolate hour on Fridays, a fun way to connect and informally talk over things, both professional and more personal. This is not only fun, it’s useful. We can appreciate what we each bring to the table. When the Moon goes into Aquarius at 7:00pm, a social evening for many brings people together.

Saturday, September 6

This is a big game day. The sports arena is a place where leadership can shine forth in individual and team sports. Certain players will demonstrate extraordinary skill. What is your game or creative project? Collaboration and group activity are highlighted, asking the question: What is the role you play in any organization or community to which you belong? Are you enjoying this role and feeling you can give your best? Are you appreciated? Does this still fit for you? Some of us are aware of a feeling that we are fulfilling our role but there is yet more to accomplish, another level we can reach together in this project or another position. Strategies come under scrutiny, like the game plan in sports. Others of us feel that we are just about done with this project or group. This becomes more obvious tomorrow. It’s good to change things up when there is a good reason. Some individuals are stepping up as game changers.

Sunday, September 7

Conscious Community - www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 45

This is not likely to be a quiet Sunday. The morning is chock full of fast-paced activity, leaving us with lingering rough spots as well as ragged tempers by the time the Moon goes Void of Course at 12:20pm. Don’t let yourself get pulled into the fray. Be a psychic martial artist and deflect any negativity. If your buttons do get pushed, catch yourself. Take a deep breath and a step back. Another factor at play, Chiron the Shape Shifter, can turn the tables by altering the ducks we thought we had in a row. Go with the flow. The ducks certainly are. It could work out better than originally planned. The divine will reveals itself, sometimes with synchronistic magic, especially after the Moon shape shifts into Pisces at 6:47pm. Chiron is called the Wounded Healer, as we find out today if we can feel compassion for the persons who are bugging us. We are all interconnected on a subliminal level. Any thought or emotion we have about a person is received via the psychic Internet. Such feelings as understanding, forgiveness, and compassion sent toward them others help to diffuse tense undercurrents. It’s as if your angels are communicating with that person’s angels, moving the dynamic onto a plane beyond the personal. This can subconsciously relieve both parties and shift the relational dynamic. You can relax and leave it up to the higher powers. Give it a try, even in your sleep. You’ll feel better. Oh, and forgive yourself for not being perfect.

Monday, September 8 FULL MOON at 17 VIRGO, 8:38pm CDT

The waves we sent into the ethers yesterday roll back in as the day goes on, reaching high tide right around the Full Moon tonight. Did you take the high road or the low road in dealing with problem areas? It is worth smoothing the rough waters and ruffled feathers, so that we can carry on and get things done. This can be a very productive time, in the right spirit. Everyone is feeling super sensitive, something we must take into account. Especially fire sign people, who have thicker skins than others, need to remember not to ride roughshod over less resilient signs. Big news unfolds in the next week. The sweep of destiny is at play, with a level of collective impatience to move things along. “Go with the flow” and “Be here now” are good mottos for this Full Moon, today and tomorrow. Don’t push the river. Paddling upstream can be exhausting. Enjoy the glorious Moon as it sails through the sky tonight, evoking dreams and longings. Moon in Pisces and Sun in Virgo can be a sweetly romantic and sensual combination.

Tuesday, September 9

We feel the Full Moon flow and themes of yesterday until the Moon goes Void at 2:11pm. Even then, the flow continues for a few hours, like a sailboat that has caught the wind, with much smoother waters than a few days ago. Some of that healing energy has worked. Expect more big news. Talking things out with others can give a helpful perspective and fresh ways of thinking about it all. The Moon moves from the last sign to the first, when it heads into Aries at 6:33pm. This noticeably perks up the energy and make for another night when it’s hard to sleep.

Wednesday, September 10

This fast-paced day brings some things to a head as well as some unexpected developments. The is one of the “big picture” days, 46 Conscious Community - September 2014

as the Moon plugs right into high-charged Uranus at 7:59pm, then goes Void of Course. This suggests that we are stunned by change in some way. Perhaps there is an extended global demonstration, a new emergence of the Occupy movement that presses for change. It’s a day for revolution. We can feel that things are on the cusp of change, and we want to make it happen. Whatever is happening, authorities likely push back. We’ll need new and unusual strategies to prevail. This may come in the form of startling new alliances and affiliations or cooperation from unexpected quarters, even former antagonists. The Moon goes Void of Course at 7:59pm, like a short circuit shut down by a lightning bolt. Yet another wakeful or stormy night for many of us.

Thursday, September 11

This electrically charged Void of Course Moon extends throughout the day and well in the evening, finally going into Taurus at 8:17pm to settle things down a bit. Most of the day, we might be on the edge of our seats or on our toes, restless, jumping up and down, excited or upset about what is happening. It could be something unprecedented that changes the landscape of our lives. Earths higher atmospheres are electrically charged with increasing input from the Sun and other cosmic influences. This creates extreme weather. We could be having strong storms, following the Full Moon, or storminess on the economic-political front—or both. Maybe the UFOs are landing. It’s hard to say. Expect the unexpected with Uranus. In any case, the situation calls for compassion and a practical response.

Friday, September 12

Things have settled down to some extent and much practical action is being taken to straighten things out. This is a very productive day. Find a natural steady pace to sustain your energy, even with the restless tension in the air. All kinds of news are buzzing around on all the media, popping up on all fronts. Everyone has an opinion. Keep up the latest news if you must. Some of us may choose to keep our heads down and work away on our projects. The level of stress can take a toll on the body. Pay attention and take care of yourself. There is an energy push in the afternoon, but don’t overdo it. Avoid getting into stubborn fits about who is king of the mountain. Let others strut and posture, while you use the same energy for creative purposes that are much more fun and satisfactory. Good job!

Saturday, September 13

The Moon goes Void of Course early at 8:32am. Reward yourself for yesterday’s productivity. Be as much of a couch potato as you want. A massage is wonderfully relaxing and unties tough muscular knots, melting tension that has built up. Mars enters Sagittarius late this afternoon at 4:57pm, a highly energizing and upbeat energy motivated to move. You are probably ready to get up and go out tonight! Adventure beckons. It could be a late one. Beware of overindulging in substances that interfere with your judgment. You rely on it and so many some other people.

Sunday, September 14

The Moon quickly shifts into mercurial Gemini at 1:26am. Never a dull moment, you may be up for anything and up late, or your

nerves need rest and you are down for the count. A warning about overindulging in substances is still in force. You can rationalize any way you want, but facts are facts. Less can be more effective and pleasurable. Use finesse. Mid-day has a strong spiritual tone.

Monday, September 15

All kinds of things are going on today. It’s easy to get distracted and lose the thread of what you were doing. That leads to waste of time and energy. Don’t waste even more energy castigating yourself. Return to the job at hand and see how much you can get done. It’s a good day to make phone calls and get caught up with information. This is another peak day for world-shaking news and developments, likely based on rearranging of global partnerships. The Moon goes Void at 9:06pm and most of us need this down time to recover from a nerve-stretching couple of days. Do eat a good healthy meal and turn off the news. Enjoy light entertainment or music only if you want a good night’s sleep.

Tuesday, September 16

Take your time to get into gear this morning by checking in with people and hearing the latest buzz. We are all talking about the latest big news. Design your to-do list to reflect what you most want to attend to today, including your personal agenda. Priorities are shifting. This large moment of destiny continues on; new news comes out hourly. Major negotiations are in progress. Let’s put our vote in favor of the win-win for everyone. The Moon goes into its home sign Cancer at 10:24am, initiating a proactive moment to set clear goals. There is still some vainglorious posturing that creates static. It may be a waste of time to pander to such people; they may never be satisfied, mainly wanting attention. Best to turn ours to seek wildly creative solutions that may succeed beyond expectation. Just make sure to attend to the details that may get lost in the excitement. Feedback from those with a critical eye is helpful. Take the time to do so.

Wednesday, September 17

This morning into the afternoon, the Cancer Moon is activating the Uranus-Pluto Square. All sorts of opinions are out there. Whose are you listening to? On a macro level, this is the time to take the needs of the public into account. On a micro level, we each take our own needs and those of our families and communities into account. Service is one of the agendas of the day. It is possible that there has been a catastrophe somewhere recently that evokes an outpouring of compassion as well as tangible support. That’s not the only possibility, of course. The energy suggests a critical turning point of some kind, that could inevitably relate to the economic situation and, also inevitably, to the upcoming elections. Your job is to consider your situation, find your center of calm and peace, from which to invite the best possibilities for growth, rather than retreat to ways of the past. Some significant pieces then click in, one after the other, like following a trails of clues.

Thursday, September 18

The morning news is again full of opinions, ideas and talking heads. Look for the meaningful stuff in all of the fluff and deception. Who is speaking to our hearts with generosity of spirit? Heart wisdom is the highest intelligence, and speaks

directly to something inside our own. We may find that in our neighborhood rather than on the media. The Moon goes Void of Course at 1:39pm, leaving a trail of positive gains. The pace lets up, so relax with it. The Moon enters royal Leo at 10:10pm, ready for a late night snuggle. Sleep like only cats know how preparing for a full day tomorrow.

Friday, September 19

A full couple of days loom ahead, overflowing with energy, enthusiasm and confidence. Add flair to your day, with smiles all around. This is a fabulous day for creative projects. Enjoy the show. Play your role like the star that you are. We are each a star—in a galaxy of other stars. Some folks don’t know when enough is enough. Let them do their thing as long as they’re not hurting anyone. Dramatic tension builds into the night, with some irksome stress. We all can’t have our own way all of the time. Jealousy or other such dark feelings may stir and be expressed, not always pretty. Some people act out in not nice ways. More conscious individuals can diffuse trouble and smooth the waters with understanding and listening. Night talk and comedy shows are likely to be more edgy than usual. It’s a good night for exposing issues that are contentious but need to be aired. Some really excellent movies may be out, stimulating dreams in technicolor. Celebrities, and maybe scandals, are in the news. In spite of all this, let’s pay attention to the special, happy heart highlights and the uplifting demonstrations of human excellence that abound today.

The Leo Moon encourages creative intelligence all day through. Some people are up at dawn following an inspiration, or to enjoy the singing of the birds and the sweet sight of the waning crescent Moon that announces the day. Venus is too close to the Sun to be visible, but the presence of the Goddess of Love in earth sign Virgo sweetens the day and our appreciation for Nature’s beauty. Virgo is often underrated for its sensuality, another delightful theme of the day. The ecstasy of the birds at the dawn of the day remind us to keep our hearts singing with the joy of being alive. There are so many reasons to rejoice. Look for them all day long. That’s using your ingenuity. Let loose your inner genius at play. The Moon goes Void of Course at 11:34pm, leaving us with some good thoughts and good news. Turn off the reality show, curl into your heart, and sleep on that.

Sunday, September 21

Good vibes linger well into the morning, a time for lounging around. If you are a churchgoer, you may find the sermon especially inspiring. When the Moon enters Virgo at 10:55am, the mood changes focus, with a tendency to clean up or do chores. Make it fun and “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” accompanied by music and an appreciation of the beautiful things around you. Perhaps Nature calls you to enjoy the autumn smells and colors. Virgo is a fitness sign, and with the Sun still in that sign for another day, we’ve got a double dose of the Virgin holding the grain of life. Do clear your space, physically and psychologically, readying for the change of season and the upcoming New Moon. Change things up. You can’t deny there are little piles of chaos here and there. Sort them out. Rearrange Conscious Community - www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 47

things for a fresh feel. While you go through your closet to get out warm clothes, make piles of unworn ones to donate to the local thrift shop. One of the themes of the times is to use what you have or give it to someone who can.

LIBRA, the SCALES Monday, September 22 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Fair-minded Librans.

Continue making order in your life. If you work in an office, take the metaphorical broom to it, sweeping out old stuff and repositioning the room for best effect. Think about folders, pretty baskets or other non-generic objects to organize work piles. Put a few favorite objects in places you will notice them often. Making our surroundings pleasant and orderly clears the mind. Many of you know this. I’m just saying it’s a really good day to do it. Virgo is a psychosomatic sign, with an intimate interplay between mind and body. Let’s draw on some of our organic intelligence. A little Feng Shui can go a long way to improve daily life. That’s the oriental system of placement, used to design a space for best energy flow. What in your space is out of place, dusty and unused? Clearing those areas helps clear cobwebs from your mind. You are likely to experience an immediate lift and motivation. Little things can make such a difference. You’ll be delighted. It’s a good way to celebrate Fall Equinox and start off on the right foot as the Sun enters Libra, sign of Harmony, at 9:30pm tonight.

Tuesday, September 23

The Moon goes Void at 7:16am, leaving satisfying improvements in place and a whole day to tweak the details and appreciate what you have accomplished. Your priorities have shifted along with your surroundings, if you have taken the advice from yesterday. If not, see what you can do today to put things literally and mentally in their places. The Moon doesn’t go into relationship-oriented Libra until 11:00pm, so we have plenty of extra time to put our ducks in a row. You might remember those ducks from earlier in the month, around the Full Moon. Ideally many of those ducks have been taken care of by now and some have swum off in time for the New Moon that resets the monthly clock tomorrow. Tie up any loose ends, but don’t plan to start any new business today.

Wednesday, September 24 NEW MOON at 2 LIBRA, 1:13am CDT

A New Moon just one day after official Equinox makes this seasonal turning point particularly potent. Once considered a holy day, we might well consider celebrating the four seasonal gateways again as we remember to honor and listen to the Earth. Cooperation happens on many levels under the sign of Libra. Conversations take precedence throughout this New Moon cycle, following up on some of the exciting developments and new initiatives from recent weeks. Now it’s time to get down to the planning stages, especially as the Moon engages the UranusPluto Square, most strongly tomorrow. There will be excellent agreements on most points. Praise to those forward-looking individuals and organizations that mediated and maneuvered these promising partnerships. On a personal level, new relationships are bonding as well. 48 Conscious Community - September 2014

Thursday, September 25

We get into the thick of things very early on today. Relationships and negotiations gain intensity, as the Moon interfaces with the Uranus-Pluto Square. Some indications about the bigger picture, probably from the other side of the globe, are already on the morning news. Many of us are awake early, talking about important matters. Lovers in new relationships get to know each other a lot better. Longstanding relationships can be refreshed. Family relationships can use some attention. Situations need to be dealt with so we understand each other. Everyone’s point of view counts, to be listened to and taken into consideration. Let’s realize what exciting possibilities are on hand by getting along and joining together. Not everyone is on the same page. Some arguments ensue. Some points of view may not find common ground. In some cases we must agree to disagree. Some partners and partnerships may disengage. A pivotal point around midday tips the scales in one direction or another. Many promising agreements are made, even well into the night.

Friday, September 26

The Moon goes Void of Course at 7:40am. After much discussion, some consensus been reached. We may have parted ways with some people and situations, in many cases amicably. With others, we have come to a deeper level of understanding. A short break for a quick celebration may be in order before the Moon enters the intensity of Scorpio at 9:30am. We gear up to find the ways and means to proceed. Don’t push too hard today. Find that new gear first, and align your desire and will power behind it. Things will then hum along like one’s of James Bond’s powerful smart cars.

Saturday, September 27

Today we get down to brass tacks. It may not feel like a weekend, unless you are into sports. There is sure to be plenty of high drama in competitive sports today. Don’t go into overdrive yourself. If you are behind the wheel of a powerful machine (refer to yesterday’s entry), you need to be a really skilled, vigilant and intelligent driver. Often in sports talk they mention the mental aspect of the game. Take that into account today, especially in late afternoon after Mercury ups the ante with its entry into Scorpio at 5:40pm. We have more bluffs and ego posturing to contend with, as some people seek all the glory. This may be most typically obvious on the political front, but there are those people in everyone’s life. Sometimes it’s you. Keep track of your motivations. The recent New Moon stresses cooperation within competition. In football the quarterback needs a good receiver to pass to. In tennis, if one player is really hitting the ball well, the opponent is challenged to lift her or his game as well. Competition can bring out the best in us, or we try to pull the rug out from the other person. It’s a choice, not always consciously made. How self-aware are you? Apply all this to your love life. Sexy? Interesting?

Sunday, September 28

We maintain the intensity for a good part of today. Passion and sensuality run high. What do you feel like doing with all that potential? Loving, creativity, sports and other outdoor physical

activities are high on the list. Even when the Moon goes Void at 3:32pm, we enjoy the day, basking in the glow in a more relaxed mood, or take a quick break before moving into a new gear. If you are grumpy or out of sorts, you have not taken advantage of this day’s potential. Don’t just be a couch potato. Get out there and generate some energy. The Moon into Sagittarius at 5:50pm likes to move, a much better idea than caving in to the lure of substances that drain your spirit. At least go for a walk or something like it to oxygenate your body. There is likely to be

plenty of motivation, if not today, then tomorrow.

Monday, September 29

This is one of those mornings some of us jump out of bed, full of energy and ready for the adventure of the day. No? Then get with the program. Make this a good one. Catch the high spirits that permeate today and tomorrow. There is more uplifting energy than has been easily available for quite a while. Inspiration, creative imagination, confidence are yours for the taking. There

is a sense that anything can happen. And it can! Be a little sensible. Don’t try to fly like superman or try to walk on the water in the middle of the ocean. Nevertheless, a new trail beckons. We envision worthy goals and set our sights. Venus changes into its own sign, Libra, at 3:53pm, encouraging cooperation and harmony. The Moon goes Void of Course at 10:30pm, leaving us inspired and encouraged that we are well on the road to good things.

An extended Void Moon lasts into the late night. Let’s enjoy the afterglow and sustain our vision, embed it in our hearts and minds. Believe in it. That’s the most important thing. We can cheer each other on, like coaches do, to bring out the best. We can’t do it all ourselves. We need support and cooperation. What amazing things we can accomplish together, and by inviting in the higher power, the higher mind, angels and guides, whatever your version of this concept is. The Moon moves into serious Capricorn at 11:41pm, suggesting business to attend to on the morrow. Even as we turn the page to a new month, we are making plans toward manifesting our vision into reality. Let’s go for it!
