PUBLISHER’S LETTER

LET’S CELEBRATE FAMILY! O

ur May issue is a very special issue for me because it is my second year of being the publisher, and sixth year of running, Conscious Community Magazine. Let me tell you, it has been quite a journey!

This all started when Walter Perschke, the previous publisher, wanted to expand his spiritually-based, entrepreneurial horizons. It was 2012, and The Monthly Aspectarian magazine was for sale. I vividly remember the day he purchased it like it was yesterday. He was so thrilled to be overseeing the oldest spiritual and metaphysical magazine in the United States. At that time, my life was pretty comfortable. I was working at the Spiritual Learning Center and studying business management in college. All of that changed the day I asked him who would manage the magazine. Much to my shock, his response was “YOU!” I said “yes,” and I became the Circulation Manager of Conscious Community Magazine. As many of you know, Walter Perschke passed away two years ago, in May of 2016, and he left me the magazine in his will and this community. He knew that I would take this magazine to the next level of consciousness.

KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER

After a couple of years of running Conscious Community Magazine, I have learned many meaningful lessons, some of which I would like to share with you. You can apply them to not only running your own business but also everyday life. 1. Trust your intuition and follow it. 2. Be open-minded. 3. Take care of yourself. 4. Celebrate your uniqueness and be yourself! 5. Take steps each day towards your dreams. 6. Open yourself to new experiences and new people. 7. Eat a clean diet full of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes. 8. Ground yourself daily with seated meditation or active meditation. 9. There are no mistakes, just lessons that take you to the next level of consciousness! 10. Be patient with yourself. May is the month of Mother’s Day, and this month, we are celebrating parents and families! Shelley Russell shows us how yoga benefits people of all ages in her article, Yoga for the Whole Family. For this month’s All About Town, Theresa Puskar reflects on her experience at Rabbi Rami Shapiro’s lecture, Searing Love: Return of Sophia and the Divine Feminine, as well as her personal experience as a mother. Our May podcast guest, Gogo Ekhaya Esima, a traditional South African healer, explains how we heal by remembering our ancestors. Read the highlights in The Ancestral Call. As always, I invite you to visit www.Conscious CommunityMagazine.com throughout the month for our newest thoughtful and inspiring content. I consider the Conscious Community part of my larger family, and I am thankful for all of you and your commitment to raising consciousness. Happy Mother’s Day! The Best,

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

Q. I’m told that I say “I’m sorry” far too often for the smallest of things even when I’m not at fault. How do I alter this habit? — Frequent Apologizer A. Dear Frequent Apologizer, Have you ever had someone bump into you, yet you’re the one who turns around and says “I’m sorry?” I know I have. This tendency often goes unrealized until someone points it out. A while back, I came upon the suggestion of replacing the unconscious “I’m sorry’s” with “Thank you’s.” The recommendation was replacing the words “I’m sorry I’m late” with “Thanks for waiting for me.” Or, instead of apologizing for taking up a friend’s time to cry on their shoulder, say “Thank you for caring about me and taking the time to listen when I need to sort myself out.” Overusing the phrase “I’m sorry” undermines our personal authority with others, especially in business settings. It can needlessly make us seem weak and mousy. Switching it up with the more positive “Thank you for…” can reverse a negative into a positive which empowers everyone. At the same time, it seeds the exchange with sentiments that are more authentic than the automatic unconscious apology. Q. I’ve been married for eight years, have a four-year-old, and feel like a completely different woman than who I was before I got married. I’m fairly content, yet some things in my life with my husband don’t seem to work anymore. I’m not sure what to do. — Mother-in-Flux

A. Dear Mother-in-Flux, I’d be surprised if you didn’t feel like a different person since you got married and had a child. Most people do, especially women. One thing we can count on is that life will bring change in a myriad of ways, especially when raising children. Marriage, pregnancy and having a child can usher in huge transformations to the structure and pacing of our lives in ways that we often can’t fully anticipate. Simple activities, friendships and hobbies may now become more difficult to participate in due to shifts in spousal, parental, familial, or work obligations and expectations. So, how do we respond to these changes in relationship to create balance? I recommend that couples, married or otherwise, sit down with their partners occasionally to renegotiate the terms of relationship in response to shifting needs and desires. The concept of relationship renegotiation encourages both partners to do a bit of self-excavation ahead of time to check in with how personal needs and perspectives have evolved while also mining for building resentments and expectations. After self-contemplation, the partners come together to engage in honest conversation about what’s required to feel balanced, respected and content in the midst of fluctuating feelings and personal wants. They then share how they’d like to make course corrections for more cohesive alignment in the future. When they open up the space for renegotiation, they share what they know is no longer working for them

while bringing the new needs, desires, and dreams they have to the table for consideration. What and how do we renegotiate? First, this is not meant as an opportunity to dump on our mates. While we’re certainly looking for relational aspects we’d like to see shift into something that feels better, we’re also grounding and affirming what’s right and good about our partnerships. Start by sharing appreciations for the other. Take this important time to highlight all the positive things that make life special with them. Remember that while the big things are important, sometimes it’s the smallest of things that we never take the time to say that create the largest currency deposit in the emotional bank accounts of others. Once those details have been shared, realize that virtually anything can be renegotiated – sex, intimacy, finances, time, chores, family and work obligations, vacation, nutrition, social obligations, engagement with in-laws, modes of communication, and responsibilities for children or aging parents. The issues are virtually endless Ultimately, most anything can be discussed for renegotiation and reconsideration, both big and small, to meet the demands of changing lifestyles and growing families. We are limited only by our lack of flexibility and imagination as couples to improve our lives together. Above all, it takes self-awareness and the willingness of both partners to create space for open conversation to see where they can get their own needs met, as well as be supportive in meeting the needs of the other. This exemplifies the give and take in relationships, along with the acknowledgment that people grow and life evolves. Alecia Rice integrates higher concepts with wisdom to bring forth balance, perspective, and clarity. She’s a personal advisor, speaker and gatherer of women. For perspective on personal issues, you’re invited to text questions and comments to 681-321-1109. Discussions continue at Ask Alecia on Facebook. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

The Ancestral Call Interview with Gogo Ekhaya Esima by Janae Jean and Spencer Schluter

This month, we had the pleasure of speaking with Gogo Ekhaya Esima of Sangoma Healing. Gogo Ekhaya was featured in the documentary, Crazywise, which focuses on the journey of two young people diagnosed with mental illnesses. Gogo Ekhaya is a trained sangoma or healer in the South African tradition. We spoke with her about the power of ancestral healing, alternative treatments for mental illness and the importance of removing the stigma of mental illness diagnosis. This transcribed interview is only a portion of the complete interview. Subscribe to the Conscious 10

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2018

Community Podcast to hear the entire conversation. — J.J Janae: How did you get involved in the documentary, Crazywise? Gogo Ekhaya: While I was going through my sangoma initiation, I was thinking about how mental health issues and people’s personal struggles should be documented in some way, like a film, especially when they are using different modalities for healing. I thought what a wonderful thing that would be. Maybe someday, I would do it. A month later, I heard about Crazywise, and I reached out and said,

“Thank you for this wonderful thing you are doing.” One of the producers got back with me, and we began talking. I told them a little bit about my journey, and they were interested and coming to New York City to do an interview, and that’s how we got started. Spencer: Can you explain what a sangoma is? GE: Sure. Sangomas are the traditional healers from South Africa. They are what someone may call a “shaman.” They are the spiritual leaders of the community where people go for healing physical, mental, family and communal

issues. They are the ones that conduct rituals and do the traditional medicines to help someone through their life’s journey. Over 60% of the population in South African still goes to traditional healers, as opposed to seeing Western medical doctors, or they do both. JJ: How did you come into the field? GE: No one chooses to become a sangoma. It’s definitely a calling. This journey led me from experiencing a lot of suffering… a lot of mental health imbalances by way of depression and suicidal ideation, hearing voices, seeing things that other people didn’t see or what other people weren’t able to see, what some people would call “psychosis.” I was being treated in Western medicine; I was in and out of psych wards. At some point, I was able to reach the peer world, which is a mental health community of people with lived experiences. Those people with lived experiences help other people become involved and reintegrated into the community after a long-term hospitalization or long-term struggle with mental health imbalances. I reached out to a peer organization and that helped me to see for the first time that it wasn’t something that… You know, the doctors tell you that you’re going to be on medication for the rest of your life. This is a sickness that’s a long-term thing; there’s no cure. Something within me really rebelled against that and decided I was going to go out and search. So, I found this beautiful peer world in the mental health system. I became a peer mental health counselor. I got some training in that. As I moved forward, I was able to reach out to someone. I felt very called to traditional methods of healing… shamanism, different herbal medicines. I was really researching it, and my heart-strings were pulling really hard. I found this beautiful lady who was doing a podcast on BlackTalkRadio. She was an African priestess, and she was also a sangoma. Her words really resonated with me. At the time, I could really sense an emergence coming through me, kind of bubbling over. I decided to reach out to her to get ancestral divination. She told me through this oracle reading from the

African perspective. She only asked me my first name, last name and last name of my parents. She as able to read my life from beginning to present and told me things that no one else really knew about me. She also told me that all of my issues, especially my issues with mental health, were a sign of the shamanic calling to be a sangoma. That truly hit home for me, and that’s how I started on the journey. SS: Do you think that learning about ancestral practices has value for the wider black community? GE: That’s a beautiful question actually. There’s been a lot of films lately with people of color going back to the ancestors. We’ve recently had the children’s film, Coco, and also Black Panther. I really feel like people really are getting away from the stigma that has been created around ancestral veneration or ancestral contact. For African people and African-Americans, through the slave trade, we lost our drums soto-speak. We lost our identity. We lost the remembrance of our practices and our culture in some way, in a really big way. It’s been really beautiful to see African-Americans really start to take interest in remembering who they are; remembering who we are as a collective whole and how important our ancestral ways were to mind, body and spirit, our families and communities.

it is absolutely important, and I’m really excited that it’s being displayed in such beautiful ways in the media. Visit www.yggstudios.com for more information about his freelance design and consulting work. He is also a master level Reiki and traditional Chinese Qigong practitioner.

The ancestral ways, ancestral veneration and ancestral contact, were involved in almost every aspect of life, through different rites of passage. When a child was born, you were able to identify why the child was coming in by contacting the ancestral guardians to see what their life’s purpose was, what their name should be. As they went into adolescence and adulthood, there were rites… all dealing with the ancestors. Even with marriage and death, ancestors were very much involved in guiding and helping us with our lives. Because we’ve lost that, we’ve kind of stopped remembering our power. Now I feel like this is the time when we are really re-awakening something that feels new but is very much ancient and very much a part of our culture. I think that CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

SEARING LOVE Return of Sophia and the Divine Feminine Rabbi Rami Shapiro Theosophical Society April 14, 2018 by Theresa Puskar

“[This is] a time of religious and spiritual transformation that dares to put an end to competing religions and silo-specific faiths – it is the return of the Divine Feminine in many forms…” — Rabbi Rami I had the pleasure and grace of attending Rabbi Rami Shapiro’s lecture on “Searing Love: Return of Sophia

Theresa Puskar and Rabbi Rami Shapiro 12

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2018

and the Divine Feminine” at the Theosophical Society in Wheaton, IL. Right from the get-go, I knew that the workshop would be a delight. The presenter, Rabbi Rami Shapiro, Ph.D., immediately opened the session with a great sense of wry wit and divine humor. He is an award-winning author of over 30 books on religion and spirituality. A professor of religious studies, he directs the One River Foundation for the study of “Perennial Wisdom” and heads its World Wisdom Bible project. His most recent endeavor is a book and subsequent movement known as the “Holy Rascal.” The book description asserts, ‘“Holy rascality is about rekindling spiritual creativity and critical thinking. It is about freeing the human capacity for religiosity—the capacity for making meaning—from the confines of brand-name religion. Holy rascals are playful and lighthearted. While our task is serious—the liberation of humanity from the madness of unhealthy and

harmful religions and religious beliefs— our attitude is not.” “Big religion tells you who you can love and who you can’t, and it fears two things the most, laughter and love.” — Rabbi Rami This was perhaps the most powerful and provocative insight that I gained in this workshop. Rabbi Rami spoke of how just about all organized religions are patriarchal, many even misogynistic in nature. He reminded us that when we laugh at something, we cannot be afraid of it. He went on to cite Dante’s description of hell to further his position. “If you read Dante, Socrates and all the other cool people were there. If they’re all there, I want to go to Hell.” He further explained that it takes a fearless joy to fall into that laughter-filled spirituality. I feel graced as I experience greater and greater instances of causeless joy and laughter in my life,

“The Mother is a fierce lover whose passion burns away the falsehood of separate self and brand name ideologies to reveal an ecstatic unity at home with both the erotic and the ascetic.” — Rabbi Rami Soon after taking us through a chanting session, Rabbi Rami shared how he started seeing visions of the Divine Mother during his college days. He would see them in the most mundane of circumstances and he noted that the more he tried to rationalize them, the more they showed up. Finally, he sought the advice of experts which led him to Terry “Teresina” Havens. Teresina, along with many others, guided Rami to follow the signs and cultivate a personal relationship to the phenomenon. After studying with Teresina, he studied with a myriad of metaphysical teachers from a wide variety of traditions, including Sister Jose Hobday, Fr. Thomas Keating, and Andrew Harvey. One of the items of note that I took away from the teachings was that the Divine Feminine can come in many forms. She can be both gentle and warm as Mother Mary and forceful and violent as Kali. The relationship that Rabbi Rami developed with the Feminine Divine opened him up to a new way of understanding religion, especially our relationship to our Divine Mother within our religious texts. Through all of this, he has developed powerful re-interpretations of the Bible, as well as a propensity for chanting. He shared his insights on the five levels of consciousness with us and emphasized how much the practice of chanting assisted him in raising his consciousness. He told us of one particular account where he was at a dollar store and was waiting for a cashier who wanted a price check. “Who the heck needs a price check in a dollar store? Everything’s a dollar!” He thought to himself. In an attempt to calm himself, he began to chant one of his favorites. Much to his delight, he felt his heart open and the anger and impatience he felt prior shifted to a deep compassion and patience for the cashier. He sug-

gested that, like in the Jewish tradition, if we work with a chant for 40 days, it will be locked into our psyche and can have a very transformative effective in our lives. Prior to our lunch break, he gave us each a copy of his book, The Love of Eternal Wisdom – A Revisioning of Saint Louis deMontfort’s Contemplation on Divine Wisdom, and suggested that we peruse it. After thumbing through it, I asked for divine guidance and then randomly opened it to a particular page. The message I received was, “When you know Her as all things, no thing is too small to awaken you to Her: the bee, the ant, the ear of corn, a flower, and a worm are each seen wrapped in ecstasy.” When I read this, a recollection of my connection to the Feminine Divine throughout my pregnancy flooded back into my consciousness. Over seventeen years ago, when I discovered I was pregnant, I prayed for a greater connection to the Feminine Divine. The responsibility of mothering was daunting, and I was concerned that my only divine connection prior had all been male manifestations through my Catholic indoctrination. Soon after I requested a greater divine feminine connection, I was visited by serpents in my dreams, usually two or three nights each week. While I will spare you the specifics of my experience, it suffices to say that my connection to the Feminine Divine was particularly heightened throughout my pregnancy. I experienced incredible miracles and manifestations that supported me in my journey as a new mother, and, in fact, drew me into my Shamanic studies.

Editor’s note: We had the honor of interviewing Rabbi Rami for our February issue and podcast. Visit www.consciouscommunitymagazine.com/rabbi_rami_perennial_wisdom/ for more of his insights on Perennial Wisdom, the Divine Feminine, holy rascality and more. -J.J.

HOW TO GET INTO THE IN-CROWD by Alan Cohen

In high school, I looked up to my classmate Rick Brown, the quintessential cool guy. He was the good-looking captain of the football team and president of the student council. He had a cheerleader homecoming queen girlfriend and was liked by everyone. I envied Rick because he was at the epicenter of the in-crowd, and I saw myself as a distant outsider. Years after we graduated, I ran into Rick and we reminisced. I confessed, 14

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2018

“I was always envious of you because you were in the in-crowd and I was way out.”Rick laughed. “Really?” he came back. “I always thought you were in the in-crowd and I was out.” I couldn’t have been more stunned. Here was a guy who had all the accoutrements of success, all the things I wished I could be and have. Meanwhile, he was envying me. How insane is that? That serendipitous meeting with Rick proved pivotal for

me. That day I realized that the voice in our head that tells us that we are defective or less-than is a liar. A story from the video series The Beatles Anthology illustrates this very dynamic. At the height of the Beatles’ illustrious career, George Harrison decided he wasn’t fit to be in a band as talented as the Beatles. He went to Ringo Starr and told him, “I’m not a real Beatle. You guys are the real Beatles, so I am going to quit the band.” Ringo

replied, “I was just thinking the same thing—that you three are the real Beatles and I am the fake, so I will quit the band.” The belief that either George or Ringo were not the real Beatles seems laughable and ludicrous, since each of those musicians was talented in his own way, and the unique synergy of those four made the Beatles the most successful entertainers in history. But, each of them had to face and deal with their own demons. If even the Beatles suffered from a sense of deficiency, you can see what a fake that voice is, and why you should give it no credence and not let it stop you. The pervasive belief that “I am a phony” is called “fraud guilt.” We all have it and there are several ways we deal with it. Most of us run from selfjudgment by busying ourselves with endless tasks and errands, working continuously, or distracting ourselves with our smartphones or other addictions. Others attempt to compensate for their perceived lack by building up an ego-façade of braggadocio, competition, bullying, anxiety-driven achievement, adding degrees or collecting empty trophies.

and cherish ourselves right where we stand, every door that we have sought to kick down would open effortlessly before us. Everything you do to try to become cool will backfire because you already are cool. God created you cool, and there is nothing you can do to become uncool, except try to become cool. In the trying is the lying. The coolest thing you could do is be yourself. To envy another person is to deny the gifts you uniquely bring. One way to reframe envy is to replace the word with the letters N.V., which stand for “new vision.” If someone has something you want, they are demonstrating that you are a match to that attribute because you are aware of it. Everything you see in the outside world is a reflection of what is going on in your inner world. “You spot it, you got it.” So, instead of separating yourself from that person

or attribute by believing it is outside of you, expand your vision and claim ownership of that trait by realizing it is inside of you. Then you heal the sense of separation and gain all that you thought you missed. The in-crowd is not a group of people you need to join. You cannot get in because you are already in. The real incrowd is made up of those who are willing to look within to find themselves. Alan Cohen is the author of many popular inspirational books, including the forthcoming The Tao Made Easy. Join Alan in Hawaii this December for his life-changing seminar Transformer Training to develop your skills and/ or career as a teacher, healer, or leader. For more information about this program, Alan’s books and videos, free daily inspirational quotes, online courses, and weekly radio show, visit www.alancohen.com.

Another group is willing to look within and heal self-judgment by holding it up to the light of higher awareness. James Thurber, author of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, said, “All men should strive to learn before they die, what they are running from, and to, and why.” It is only when we are willing to stop, step back, and tell the truth about what motivates us that we can break free. A Course in Miracles tells us that the world we have created is inside out and upside down, the exact opposite of the way we were born to live. If you want to know what is true, take most of what you have learned about how to succeed and reverse it. One of the most pervasive illusions is that we have to struggle to become good, worthy and likeable. The ego thrives on creating fictitious gaps between who we are and who we should be. But, there is no gap. We are already good, worthy and loveable as we are. If we can love, honor, accept CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

5 Ways a Plant-BasedDiet Can Improve your Life by Meghan De Jong, RHN

You don’t have to look too deep into the health industry to realize there is a whole lot of buzz surrounding the topic of plant-based diets these days. In fact, according to research by Global Data (2017) there has been a 600% increase in people identifying as vegan in the U.S. over the last three years, growing from 1% to 6% of American consumers.1 The term “plant-based” or “vegan” refers to a diet that avoids all animal products, including; meat, fish, dairy, eggs, and for some, honey. Wondering what’s the reasoning behind this huge shift towards a fully plant-based diet? For starters, many people are waking up to the idea that a plant-based diet helps to support a more compassionate and conscious lifestyle. 20

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2018

Beyond advocating for animal welfare, it has been found that this type of diet reduces one’s carbon footprint to less than half of that of a meat eaters!2 Not only that, most of those who ditch the animal products and adopt a vegan lifestyle experience a whole array of improvements in their life. Listed below are five of the many benefits plant based consumers often experience. 1) PREVENTION and TREATMENT of HEART DISEASE: Most animal products contain many health damaging properties such as glycotoxins, saturated fats, high levels of unhealthy cholesterols and chemical contaminants, all of which can lead to inflammation within the body.3 The constant stress that these toxic substances place on the body

can eventually result in chronic illness, such as heart disease, which remains the world’s leading cause of death.3 There has been decades of research that clearly indicates the primary cause of heart disease is a poor diet, especially those laden with animal fats.4 A plant-based diet helps to protect and heal the body from heart disease as it is higher in both fiber and phytonutrients which perform powerful healing actions within the body.5 2) ENERGY: Plant-based diets are known to consist of dramatically greater amounts more of fresh fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Consuming such foods provide the body with lasting energy to balance blood sugars throughout the day. These foods are also much more nutrient dense and thereby provide the body with a concentrated source of the vitamins and minerals to thrive optimally. On the topic of energy, it is also important to note that when consuming a purely plant-based diet, one mitigates the impacts of consuming the harmful by-products of industrial farming. Such by-products include antibiotics, artificial hormones, stress hormones, genetically modified foods and toxic chemicals. These products affect the cellular and energetic make up of both the animal and the individuals consuming that animals’ meat. 3) SKIN IMPROVEMENTS: One of the most visible improvements by switching to a plant-based diet is the clearing of the skin. Dairy and other animal products are very hard to digest and often cause excess toxins to circulate within the body. As the skin is the largest organ of elimination, in desperation to rid itself of toxins produced from animal products, the body will attempt to force them to the external via the skin. This causes conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis and rashes. Foods that promote skin health are often consumed in much higher quantities on a plant-based diet. Some specific skin promoting plant foods include; avocado, sweet potatoes, kale, carrots, walnuts and sunflower seeds.

Bacon?” Once you dive in, you will realize the sky is the limit when it comes to plant based cooking! Plant-based living truly is the way of the future. It is best for the environment, animal welfare, and for improving your own individual life. Even if you aren’t ready to adopt a fully plantbased diet, simply reducing the amount of meat and dairy you consume is already a huge step in the right direction. So, do your best to embrace a more plant-centered life and watch the improvements unfold around and within you! 1. https://foodrevolution.org/blog/vegan-statistics-global/ 2. http://shrinkthatfootprint.com/food-carbon-footprint-diet 3. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5466942/ 4. 4) WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: Adopting a plant-based diet is one of the fastest ways to help you reach and maintain a healthy weight. This type of diet is often much lower in calories, unhealthy fats and cholesterol. It is also typically higher in fiber, which helps keeps things moving throughout your digestive tract. Alkalizing foods such as leafy greens, nuts, seeds, coconut, fresh fruit and whole grains, are also eaten in more abundance, which create for a healthy, active metabolism. 5) CREATIVITY in the KITCHEN: Adopting a plant-based diet is an amazing way to get your creative juices flowing in the kitchen. Instead of the typical “meat and potatoes” diet, you get to think outside the box and prepare yourself beautiful meals filled with all the protein, carbohydrates and fats your body needs. You can think of innovative ways to recreate your favourite typical meat-based plates. YOGA FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY by Shelley Russell You can introduce a yoga practice to your family at any age. You do not have to be young, athletic or even flexible to benefit from yoga; you just need to show up. Your relationship with yoga can begin at birth and continue throughout life. Yoga can be done at home, in the yard, on vacation, at the park or in a yoga studio. It is a lifelong activity available to all. Starting at the beginning of life, the prenatal mom can take yoga to help prepare her body and mind for labor and childbirth. Practice squatting, opening the hips, lengthening and strengthening the pelvic floor in preparation. These exercises help the head to be in the correct position and may contribute to avoiding a C-section. This is a gift for you and your unborn child. Even babies can do yoga. Babies are helped into poses by their caregiver. These simple movements activate the brain’s development and nervous system. They are gently bounced and swung, which they love, whilst they develop their vestibular system, build body awareness, balance and their ability to process sensory information. These classes provide a unique opportunity for the mother and baby to bond and build social connections which help both to thrive. Yoga grows with the family, as the child grows, the yoga changes, but it can always be present. Once children reach four or five, they are ready to take yoga independently. If you create a playful children’s yoga class, the children will drink it up. They will show a commitment and focus to complete the journey or adventure. They love to imagine while doing poses. As a teacher, it’s an honor to watch them become enthusiastic surfers in warrior II, pretend to make delicious lemonade as they twist their bodies in a supine twist and float gently home on their cloud in savasana. Many concerned parents of teens wonder how they can help regulate and manage their child’s emotions and combat anxiety or depression? While there are antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications available, those aren’t always successful or best for your child. Teens love yoga. They may begrudgingly come to the first class, but once they have experienced the bliss of a guided meditation or the flooding of calm after alternate nostril breathing, they are hooked. Balance poses develop the cerebellum part of the brain that controls the body in motion and helps improve memory and concentration. Inversions, breathing techniques and guided meditations in savasana are the

“Platform Nine and Three-Quarters” to peace and serenity for a teen. They are then empowered, they feel they can regulate and manage their emotions with autonomy, which offers room for healing, hope and relief. Yoga is a wonderful activity for the whole family to take together. Sharing a yoga class with your children is a healthy way to bond and deepen the connection, in a new meaningful and playful way. You can take a class together or do it in little bites throughout the day. Kids love to imitate you. If you set up your mat, they will try to copy you and become little yogis without any prompting. In family yoga, sitting back to back with a teen who you feel disconnected from, closing your eyes and focusing on the subtle changes and movement of the air going in and out of their body, does something. You try to match their breath, letting your bodies move and work in unison, as you experience a collaborative breath, it is magical and brings back that connection. Parents can benefit immensely from having their own yoga practice too. Parenting from a refreshed, calm and grounded place is a game changer. Once the stress and anxiety of life are dealt with, they can be replaced by peace, patience and love. It is always present within, but your best you can get lost, blocked and forgotten. On a yoga mat, you can find, rediscover or meet a totally new you, one you’ll probably really like. Shelley Russell, owner and founder of Little Meadow Family Yoga, received her 200-hour yoga certification through Global Family Yoga and began teaching children’s yoga in 2010. Shelley is passionate about sharing the therapeutic benefits of yoga and loves giving children skills that they can use throughout childhood and into adulthood. Shelley recently opened her new family yoga studio in La Fox, IL. Visit www.littlemeadowfamilyyoga.com. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER May 2018 by Tara Aal

Overview We begin the month with May Day, also known as the Celtic festival Beltane. Beltane falls halfway between spring equinox and summer solstice. The Earth is abundant, flowers are blooming, and the fertility of creation surrounds us. In the old days, people would dance around the maypole, honoring life, sexuality and sensuality. It is so good to delight in natural pleasures, giving ourselves freedom to enjoy the gifts of the Earth, ourselves and each other. Soak up the Taurus Sun until Gemini sneaks in on the twentieth. What would Taurus do? If you have ever shared a meal with a true Taurean, you know what I mean. They know how to indulge, and you might find yourself jealous of the attention they give every mouthful. This month, choose something yummy and take the time to receive every bit of its deliciousness. Astrology is like a map of your personal wiring and energy. It also reminds you of your deepest desires and intentions for growth. It’s an amazing tool to bring about awareness, raise consciousness, and increase empathy and compassion. Check your natal chart out at www.astro.com. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete her orbit through the twelve signs, spending approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is void-of-course, it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets until it leaves the sign it’s in. We sometimes say the Moon is floating between signs during these times, and it creates a sense of timelessness. You can embrace these events by slowing down and tuning into your inner guidance. It’s not the best time to start new things, but it’s perfect opportunity to make room for what’s to come. If you want to know more, check out www.moontracks.com.

Tuesday, May 1 With Moon moving into Sagittarius this morning, we will feel lighter, ready to rise above anything that may have been holding us down. Give yourself freedom to break your routine and make fun a priority. Greater meaning and truth are often found when you least expect it, outside your comfort zone.

Wednesday, May 2 Let the Moon Neptune square this afternoon sweep you into new realms of reality. The square feels like friction to get your attention. Is there something you are ready to see clearly? If you are stuck in emotional patterns that aren’t giving you what you want, be brave and let the false curtain rise, revealing the real show behind. Be compassionate with yourself and others; emotional attachments are tough to dissolve.

Thursday, May 3 Today builds on yesterday, and if you became aware of something you are ready to change, Moon Uranus trine reflects your desire to now fully liberate yourself from that old “show” you’ve been running. How do you want to feel? Focus on that and don’t look back. Sagittarius Moon VoC begins 7:50 p.m. until 9:06 p.m. when the Moon enters Capricorn.

Friday, May 4

Wednesday, May 9

Tuesday, May 15

It might feel like you have a heavy load today, and maybe you do. Moon Saturn conjunction is subject to gravity and can seem like a giant weight, but it shows your ability to commit, produce, and deliver. Have you been slacking off at something you are ready to push forward? Do it!

Pisces Moon receives gentle support from Saturn sextile. Today is a fantastic day to turn your dreams into form. Give your imagination a chance to fill more than your dream journal. Don’t underestimate your vision, even in the most mundane situations.

The Sabian Symbol for today’s Taurus New Moon is “A Vast Public Park” which means the cultivation of natural resources for all to share. Join me in setting a new intention to choose more ways of actively giving of ourselves – adding to the gifts of others so we can all have more. Uranus begins an eight-year transit of Taurus which could bring unexpected changes regarding finances, resources, and how we sustain ourselves. Taurus Moon VoC begins 3:29 p.m. until 3:43 p.m. when the Moon enters Gemini.

Saturday, May 5 Capricorn Moon is being engaged by almost every planet. Sun, Neptune, Jupiter, Mercury, Pluto and Mars all want to play with your emotions and the very foundation of your security. Remember that the planets represent parts of you; your psyche. Take responsibility for yourself and your needs. Let your inner committee work together; there is room for all of you.

Sunday, May 6 You can always step outside your paradigm and take a new view, but Uranus and Aquarius lend extra support if you’re ready to get out of your own way today. Capricorn Moon VoC begins 8:48 a.m. until 9:48 a.m. when the Moon enters Aquarius.

Monday, May 7 As with The Tower tarot card, sometimes we need to tear something down to build anew. Mercury Pluto square puts pressure on and in your head, especially while Mercury is in Aries. What self-talk, banter with others, and beliefs are keeping you down – using up your energy and perpetuating negativity? Pluto rules annihilation. Are you ready to drop that dead weight you keep alive in your mind?

Tuesday, May 8 Sun Jupiter opposition is trying to get our attention. Our shining star and sense of purpose (Sun) is looking across the table at our greater consciousness that wants the truth (Jupiter). What have you not been seeing that is ready to be integrated? Who are you? Who do you want to be? You have more to share. Collectively, we need to expand our perspective and remember what it means to truly shine. Aquarius Moon VoC begins 9:28 p.m. until 10:10 p.m. when the Moon enters Pisces.

Thursday, May 10 Go with the flow; follow the light; dream the dream. Moon Neptune conjunction and Moon Jupiter Trine will take you “out there” if you want to go. Just don’t drive if you’re under the influence of anything that affects your capacity to be very present.

Friday, May 11 The Wounded Healer, Chiron is on the Moon today – well, not literally, but it may feel that way. Chiron in mythology was the father of medicine and his great remedies came through his personal healing journey. You know that something about you that feels hopelessly broken or not good enough? Invite it to come out of hiding. It’s your key and your cure. Pisces Moon VoC begins 4:02 a.m. until 7:40 a.m. when the Moon enters Aries.

Saturday, May 12 If you find yourself challenged in communication or ready to fight with someone else’s point of view, take a breath and slow down. Mercury square Mars can erupt as angry words and sharp actions. Get some physical activity and let some of the excess fiery energy out.

Sunday, May 13 From fast flying and restless Aries, Mercury enters steady Taurus today, with Moon and Uranus at its side. This is a major shift in our thinking and communicating. Any new ideas you recently set in motion are ready to be grounded. Aries Moon VoC begins 1:04 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. when the Moon enters Taurus.

Monday, May 14 This is a happy day for Taurus Moon. With trines to Saturn and Pluto and sextile Neptune, Luna can enjoy sensual pleasures, open herself to receive abundance, and meet all her needs with ease. You can too.

Wednesday, May 16 Just before midnight, Mars entered Aquarius, revitalizing our energy. After its transit in authoritative and traditional Capricorn, Mars in Aquarius reflects the need to express our individuality and break the mold. Are you ready to use your willpower in ways that give you, and all of us, more freedom?

Thursday, May 17 Do you appreciate the beauty of words – the way we hold words that touch our hearts forever in our memories? Moon Venus conjunction in Gemini uses words to express love and caring. Leave a loving note for someone today, maybe for yourself. Gemini Moon VoC begins 1:17 p.m. until 4:47 p.m. when the Moon enters Cancer.

Friday, May 18 Saturn is on our scene, harmoniously engaging our thoughts and communications and asking us to pay attention to our emotional reactions. If the moment presents itself, ask for what you need with maturity. You deserve to know if it’s available, so you can move forward in the best direction for you.

Saturday, May 19 Expect emotions to be all over the place today along with childish behavior. With Moon contacting Pluto, Uranus and Mars, imagine we are all on feeling rollercoasters. Venus moved into Cancer this morning, adding more emotional energy. Remember that most of the external things triggering you aren’t personal. It just feels like it. Cancer Moon VoC begins 4:14 p.m. until 6:10 p.m. when the Moon enters Leo. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

Wednesday, May 23

Use this day to wrap something up – to recognize where you’ve hit the end of a road. Celebrate your completion and now use your energy toward a new direction. Sun will leave Taurus tonight. Before it does, feel your new direction rooting firmly, supported by the Earth. Leo Moon VoC begins 10:30 p.m. until tomorrow.

Virgo Moon flows with aspects to Mercury and Pluto. Liberate yourself from the overly critical side of Virgo and align with its unmatched ability to make things better and serve the greater good. Virgo Moon VoC begins 9:55 a.m. until tomorrow.

Monday, May 21 Gemini Sun radiates with curiosity and the desire to make new connections. If you’ve been nurturing a project, imagine it reaching its arms out to engage with the world. Extend your hand to someone new today and spark up a conversation. Leo Moon VoC ends 9:03 p.m. when the Moon enters Virgo.

Tuesday, May 22 Virgo Moon Saturn trine makes a good day for getting things done. Is your work making you happy? Are you happy when you work? You can make new choices about your work as well as your attitude toward it. Choose to feel good and see how the world shifts to accommodate you.

Thursday, May 24 The ease of Libra is a gift. Under this Libra Moon, look for beauty and harmony. We’re likely to be social today, but it may conflict with our responsibilities and personal needs. It’s an exercise of “get the balance right”. Virgo Moon VoC ends 1:51 a.m. when the Moon enters Libra.

Friday, May 25 We are experiencing the second of three exact Jupiter Neptune trines between December 2017 and August 2018. Trines bring tremendous potential but are easily ignored because they don’t cause friction. We need this energy – the hope, expanded community, generosity and compassion. It helps us move beyond personal beliefs that divide us into universal understanding and connectedness. How will you open your heart a little bit more to yourself and all of us? Libra Moon VoC begins 4:04 p.m. until tomorrow.

Saturday, May 26 Be careful this morning, especially in your commute. Moon Uranus opposition can bring unexpected events emotionally and physically. Scorpio Moon can brood, so be aware if you start to “go dark” and give yourself time to feel. This can be an emotionally liberating or frustrating day. If you find yourself frantically trying to escape your feelings, be careful not to cut yourself on the way out. Be gentle. Libra Moon VoC ends 8:39 a.m. when the Moon enters Scorpio.

Sunday, May 27 The depths of your feelings are more accessible today with Scorpio Moon contacting Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto. We use a great deal of our energy in emotion. We are emotional beings, so this is natural, but what happens when your feelings become obsessive? If there an area of your life where your emotions have frozen in a pattern, such as feeling jealous, unhappy or anxious? Start

a new relationship with this part of you. Listen to her. Ask her why she feels what she feels. She wants to be loved, and you know best how to love her.

Monday, May 28 Moon moves into Sagittarius this evening with a burst of fiery energy to bolster our confidence and creativity. What are you passionate about? Do something with it! Scorpio Moon VoC begins 12:25 p.m. until 5:29 p.m. when the Moon enters Sagittarius.

Tuesday, May 29 Happy Full Moon! The Sagittarian Lunar light of awareness reveals our alignment with our truth and beliefs. It shows us more of our natural selves by expanding our view. With Sagittarius, we’re everinspired to seek more. Are you living life true to your nature? Are you following your bliss? If you missed the boat, it’s never too late to catch it.

Wednesday, May 30 Continue to integrate anything you received from the Full Moon. Today is cosmically calm – just what we need to reflect. Mercury entered Gemini yesterday evening, drawing us out of the shell intellectually and socially. During this transit, communication can really ramp up, sometimes too fast for comprehension. Give your mind time to adjust. Taurus to Gemini is like skipping a few gears up. Sagittarius Moon VoC begins 1:25 a.m. until tomorrow.

Thursday, May 31 Embrace the Capricorn Moon, even if it feels stiff at first. Your emotional self-sufficiency and strength is your key to success and satisfaction. The Moon always nurtures, in all the signs. How does she nurture in Capricorn? She teaches you to support and respect yourself. She shows you the value of hard work and discipline balanced with time to relax and rejuvenate. She supports you as the leader of your life. Sagittarius Moon VoC ends 4:26 a.m. when the Moon enters Capricorn. Tara Aal is a practicing astrologer, writer, and teacher. Carrots & Spices

ORANGE MUSCAT CHAMPAGNE DRESSING

by Janae Jean

4 tablespoons orange muscat champagne vinegar 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

We are all most familiar with orange carrots, but carrots come in purple, red, yellow and white varieties as well. When we include carrots are various hues in our diets, we are maximizing our antioxidant intake. Carrots are probably best known for the antioxidant named for them, beta-carotene. However, they contain valuable amounts of many antioxidants. While raw carrots are delicious on their own or with a healthful dip, cooking carrots increases the amount of betacarotene that our bodies can convert into vitamin A, which benefits our eyesight, bones and reproductive health. Spiced and sweet roasted carrot recipes are staples in Northern African cuisine. Combining the flavors of carrots, oranges, vinegar and spices, this meal brings an exotic touch to our tables. The spices used in these recipes were inspired by ras el hanout, a spice blend that is as closely associated with Northern African cooking as garam masala is in Indian dishes. Ras el hanout translates to “head of the shop” and blends may contain up to 100 spices. Historically, it was literally a blend of the best spices the shop had to offer. Typical ras el hanout spices include healthful turmeric, peppercorn, paprika, cardamom, clove and cumin. Blending varieties of foods, cuisines and spices are all great ways to maximize the nutritional power of our meals. The colors of fruits and vegetables are influenced by the nutrients in them. For example, it is the beta-carotene in them that gives orange carrots their hue. I’ve heard some people refer to this style of cooking as “eating the rainbow.” When you imagine it this way, it’s easy to see what foods you may be missing in your and your family’s daily diet.
