PUBLISHER’S LETTER

ALL KINDS OF LOVE T

here is One Love that connects all of us, but we experience many expressions of love throughout our lives. Feelings of love make us feel giggly, accepting and whole. With love, you feel as if you can move mountains! The month of February is advertised to us as a month of love due to of Valentine’s Day. On that day, we do our best to surprise our loved ones, usually our significant others, but what about other people you love, such as your parents or even yourself? There are many types of love, and in this issue, I want to share many of these with you, not just romantic love.

KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER

Let’s first consider our love to our family, in particular, our parents. We receive our earliest love lessons from our parents. This kind of love can be wonderful and supportive, but sometimes, it can be hard and painful. In this month’s column, A Different Kind of Valentine, Alan Cohen illustrates this kind of love. “When I was growing up, I did not appreciate my parents. I was busy living out my own desires, figuring out who I was, and exploring the world. I took mom and dad for granted. I had judgments about them and wished they were otherwise. At times, I was disrespectful. I was a self-involved teenager.“ How do you approach this kind of love when you grow up and become a parent? According to Alan Cohen, we should be open to appreciating our parents and be more compassionate towards them. Additionally, he asks us to consider how we grew as a result of the challenges our parents gave us. When we look at the bigger picture of love, we see that all of our experiences make perfect sense. They make us who we are. Do you know that you can attract your relationship by changing your energy at home? According to Kristina Hollinger, we can do that with Feng Shui. In her article, How to Attract the Relationship You Truly Want with Feng Shui, she teaches us that we can find it in our home in The Wisdom and Knowledge Gua. “You need to spend some time in The Knowledge Gua to get some self-knowledge on what it is that you truly want and need from a partner. Once you get clear on your desires, you will be able to articulate that to someone else.” I strongly believe that; when deep in your heart you know the kind of person you would like to be, you will attract the right kind of person into your life. Everything starts within us! As we move closer to spring, there are more and more great events across the Midwest, including the Ostara Lumiere Ball, the Holistic Healing with Herbs series, and the Getting Your Sh*t Together Weekend. Conscious Community is proudly supporting a showing of HEAL, a documentary that takes us on a scientific and spiritual journey. Turn to our Community Happenings for details, and visit ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com/events-calendar to see all the latest events. As always, I invite you to visit ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com. We are now adding new content throughout the month! You can hear full audio episodes of the Conscious Community Podcast, including the interview with Rabbi Rami in this issue, but also mid-month episodes, such as our recent conversation with Sam Bennett author of Start Right Where You Are. On Feb. 15, we will continue to celebrate the beauty of life and love with a discussion with Pastor Ian Simkins of the Beauty In The Common project, where we discuss seeing the beauty in everyday life and the shared experiences that unite us all. Check back with us regularly for more inspirational and thought provoking content! Until next time,

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

Q. It’s hard for me to face Valentine’s Day each year as a single woman with no romantic interest. How can I soften the effects of feeling that everyone has love in their life except for me? — Single Heart A. Dear Single Heart, This holiday can be challenging for both women and men, as well as single and partnered. When we’re on the single side of the fence with no romantic interest in sight, it can feel lonely while falsely appearing that everyone else is happily connected and in love. This illusion springs from comparison and projection. Our commercial greeting card culture seeds and perpetuates that notion. It’s good to remember that many partnered people, especially men, consider Valentine’s Day a hassle. They feel pressured to find a gift or create an experience that sends the “proper” message of affection and connection, sometimes without the anticipated result due to disappointment from another’s misaligned expectations. Stepping back and detaching from the “holiday” of eros, or romantic love, allows us to infuse more meaning by practicing “agape,” transcendent and unconditional love for ALL. If this occasion is about “love”, let’s expand it from the “romantic partnered” conditioning and flow into a higher dimensional celebration of universal love. “Agape” is a higher vibrational love, which can be borne of sacrifice, leaving us feeling warmly engaged and meaningfully connected, as when we do for another without expectation or judgment.

I love my partner-free cousin’s way of reclaiming this special day for herself by inviting her favorite people over for dinner. This insures that she’s not alone and that she’s surrounded by people who love her. She feels the love of the holiday, although not necessarily the romantic love which is often overrated. A beautiful side effect is that people, who have never met, strike up new friendships through shared food and respectful conversation. It’s an empowering tradition that I highly recommend to those who feel lonely or at odds with feeling uncoupled. Q. I’m ashamed to admit it, but sometimes I feel a weird irritation when a woman-friend close to me rocks an achievement. I know I’m authentically happy for her and don’t understand why I feel this way. Any insight? — Happy with Envy A. Dear Happy with Envy, There’s no shame here. This is something that happens frequently to females and males alike. When another steps out or is recognized in a big way, it can often trigger unconscious comparisons that feel similar to envy. It’s important to differentiate between jealousy and envy for perspective. According to Psychology Today, “Envy is a two-person situation, while jealousy is a three-person situation. Envy is a reaction to lacking something, while jealousy is a reaction to losing something or someone.” Sometimes we might feel envy, and at other times, it can merely be a mirror

that reflects the progress of our own journey. If we feel a calling to be something more, and we witness others stepping more fully into themselves before we do, self-judgment can be triggered. This can feel like it’s about the other person, especially when the callings are similar, when it’s actually about us and the fact that we’d like to be further down our own road than we are. If one finds themselves begrudging of another’s success, my recommendation is to step back, to get clear on what you’re really feeling. If the core of what you’re feeling is actually envy, this is an opportunity for you to work it out by applying consciousness to it. Do you really not want that person to be where they are or do you just wish that you were there too? If it’s the former, this requires more guidance than I have space to address here. If it’s the latter, work with those feelings by applying a liberal dose of appreciation towards what they’ve achieved while using that as inspirational fuel to further propel yourself on your envisioned path. Ask yourself what you resent or admire about this person’s accomplishment and figure out ways to alchemize or cultivate those energies within yourself towards your own success. What qualities do they have that you might also adopt to your benefit? Walking a conscious path doesn’t mean that we’re above feeling triggered by base thoughts and emotions. What it does mean is that we’re consciously present with those feelings, while trying our best to separate out what we’re feeling and why. As the strands get separated out, we can see our wounded places more clearly and apply tools and practices to heal them and balance them out. Alecia Rice integrates higher concepts with wisdom to bring forth balance, perspective, and clarity. She’s a personal advisor, speaker and gatherer of women. For perspective on personal issues, you’re invited to text questions and comments to 681-321-1109. Discussions continue at Ask Alecia on Facebook. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

Seeking the Heart of Perennial Wisdom Interview with Rabbi Rami Shapiro by Janae Jean and Spencer Schluter

For our featured interview this month, we spoke with Rabbi Rami Shapiro. Rabbi Rami is the author of over 30 books, including his most recent, Holy Rascals: Advice for Spiritual Revolutionaries. He is also the host of 10

FEBRUARY 2018

the podcasts Essential Conversations with Rabbi Rami and How To Be A Holy Rascal as well as an advice columnist for Spirituality & Health Magazine. Rabbi Rami served as a chaplain for the United States Air Force for three years, led Temple Beth Or in Miami, Florida for 20 years, and taught religious studies at Middle Tennessee State University for ten years. He currently guides the One River Foundation, www.oneriverfoundation. org, which is dedicated to promoting “Perennial Wisdom at the mystic heart of humanity’s religions.” The following article only contains a small portion of our conversation with Rabbi Rami, listen to the podcast to hear our in-depth interview. Subscribe

to the Conscious Community Podcast on iTunes, GooglePlay, Stitcher, and/ or YouTube for the latest updates, midmonth episodes and more. — J.J. Spencer: I felt a lot of commonality with you, reading your book. Holy Rascals finds the Perennial Wisdom in all religions and uses humor to transcend and find that universal truth… You have somebody like George Carlin or Bill Hicks, who is dropping this really heavy truth on the audience, but at the end of the day people can just laugh it off and say, “That’s just entertainment.” Do you think that that is a problem for Holy Rascals? Rabbi Rami: Well… I think both. It’s a problem and a gift. The problem is

something like you said where people say, “That’s just entertainment.” I think a bigger problem is when people think that laughing in and of itself is enough… I think you can convince yourself that merely making or merely having fun is sufficient. That isn’t what Holy Rascals is trying to do. Holy Rascals is using humor to strip away the B.S. that so many religions hide behind… My Zen master, Joshu Sasaki Roshi, told me back in the ‘70s...“Zazen is fine. Zen meditation is fine, but you don’t really need it. All you really need to do is sit on the edge of your bed in the morning when you wake up and start to laugh. At first, it will be forced laughter, but after a while the laughter becomes real. When the laughter becomes real and you let it take over and you end up with tears rolling down your cheeks, then you can get up and go about your day. You’ll be living your day in a state of… liberation.” At the heart of so much “brand-name” religion is fear, but when you’re laughing, fear can’t take hold. So, laughter is the great liberator. Janae: What about the movement for people to embrace various traditions from around the world? They’re leaning towards the Perennial Wisdom, but some people seem to look at it as a way to acquire new dogma, new rituals. What do you say to point those people towards the truth behind the rituals? RR: Yeah, that’s always the challenge, the struggle between literalism and metaphor… We tend to take these things very shallowly, which is another way of saying very literally. So, when people of different religious backgrounds come together and tap the Perennial Wisdom in their own traditions, and share that among one another, I think that’s fabulous. When you are doing your meditative work, your contemplative work, you seem to come to the Perennial Wisdom. So, we have to take a look at these things the way the Zen people talk about them as “fingers pointing towards the moon and not the moon itself.” In

the world of the Holy Rascal, we are willing to follow the finger of anyone who’s pointing to that Perennial truth. In the world of “brand-name” religions, people usually take their fingers and give each other their fingers, as it were. SS: You say your mother tongue is Judaism. Is that because of how you were raised? Have you made a conscious decision to remain being a rabbi and to remain being Jewish, even though you have learned all this wisdom from these other traditions? RR: I was raised in an Orthodox Jewish environment, but when I was 16 I discovered Buddhism through a class in high school… I became what I would call then a serious Buddhist practitioner. I had a Zen teacher and ultimately worked with several Zen masters. I took it very seriously as a practice, not simply as book learning…. I find wisdom in all these places. When I’m talking about these things I’m blending the languages of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Taoism, Christianity and Islam. I have gone to India many times to teach. Often when I’m there, and I’m talking about Judaism, Swamis will come up to me and say that sounds like Vedanta Hinduism. Are you sure you’re telling us [about] Judaism?” What the confusion is…and this is how I reconcile this for myself…is the Judaism I teach is the Perennial Wisdom that comes through Judaism. I’m using Jewish language, Jewish tradition, symbol and ritual, to expound the Perennial. That’s why if you’re a Hindu who’s also rooted in the Perennial, you will hear a lot of resonance with that.

like what you’re doing, or my podcast, Essential Conversations With Rabbi Rami, or so many other people’s podcasts. [Podcasts] dive in to the moment and bring out all kinds of wisdom that is incredibly timely, even if it is also incredibly transient. I think that podcasts definitely have a bright future. Janae Jean serves as editor, social media manager and podcaster for “Conscious Community Magazine.” She has an M.M. in computer music composition from Johns Hopkins University and is actively researching using electronically generated sounds for healing. See www.janaejean.com and www.perennialmusicandarts.com for details about Janae’s upcoming classes, lesson information, workshops, shows and projects. Spencer Schluter is the advertising account manager, social media manager and podcaster for “Conscious Community Magazine.” His experience includes visual communications, advertising, social media, marketing, public relations and business development. He is also a master level Reiki and traditional Chinese Qigong practitioner.

JJ: You write a column; you write books; you host podcasts. What do you think is the most effective mode of communication for the future? RR: I’ve written over three dozen books. I think that long-form books just aren’t speaking to people the way they used to…I think that short-form writing is still very powerful, parables, aphorisms, that kind of thing. I think that podcasts are very, very powerful because they’re so immediate… Stuff CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

[ALL ABOUT TOWN]

RECONNECTIVE HEALING Dr. Eric Pearl

Chicago IANDS – Evanston, IL, January 13, 2018 by Theresa Puskar I always look forward to attending the monthly Chicago IANDS (International Association for Near-Death Studies) meeting at the Evanston Hospital. Diane Willis heads up the Chicago chapter and has done so since the early 1990’s. She is a radiant soul and has single-handedly

kept this organization flourishing. She played her Native American flute to open the event, a skill that was gifted to her after her near-death experience. It was a magical contemplation. As I listened, I immediately felt intense heat coming from my hands and shifted into the present moment. Her musical connection with the divine is palpable and an inspiration to those who are graced to bathe in it! “Reconnective Healing is the new Energy, Light and Information of our planet. It’s a highly evolved form of energy interaction that continues to advance our health, balance and quality of life progress with infinite freedom and expanded consciousness. It promotes our ability to heal ourselves and impact the lives of others.” — Dr. Eric Pearl Dr. Eric Pearl and his partner, Jillian Fleer, then took the stage. He is a chiropractor who specializes in a powerful process known as Reconnective Healing. While

he opened his lecture sharing the details of his mother’s near-death experience, the bulk of the presentation focused on his extraordinary healing gift. While he doesn’t recall his birthing experience, his life has been graced with exceptional experiences ever since. After twelve years of practicing chiropractic, one night a lamp lit, a door opened, and the presence of other beings awakened him within his home. At that moment, he knew he had an opportunity to respond from a place of fear or awe. He chose the latter. “Ultimately, we are a light placed here, so that others can better see.” — Dr. Eric Pearl Dr. Pearl and Jillian initiated us into the Reconnective experience. He clarified this healing as being our evolution in all arenas, not just physical, but emotional, mental and spiritual as well. Jillian followed, explaining, “We are mostly energy; we are not primarily physical form. When we meditate or actively

After experiencing Reconnective Healing, she felt something had been released within her. Theresa Puskar, Jillian Fleer, Dr. Pearl & Diane Willis She remembered her worth. Dr. Pearl ended the lecture encouraging, “We have all said, ‘Yes,’ even while verbally saying ‘No.’ That’s why we are here.” Hearing this powerful message, I was left with a sense of an infinite world of possibility that exists within and around us. I know that I am saying, “Yes” to so many of life’s gifts, despite myself! Theresa Puskar, our All About Town contributor, is a writer, trainer, speaker, minister and inspirational audiobook producer. She is the author of a solo show and workshop, Beauty, Bollywood and Beyond, along with “The Terri Series” – seven children’s books that focus on bullying, honoring diversity, celebrating creativity, non-judgment of emotions, finding alternatives to technology-based entertainment, discovering a non-judgmental God, and overcoming fears. She has also recorded a powerful experiential audio program, “How to De-Clutter Your Mind and Live a Heart-Centered Life.” To place orders or learn more about her upcoming engagements, you can log onto her website, www.theresapuskar.com.

Dr. Pearl shared that letting go of technique was the first gift he received with this transmission. The Reconnective Healing spectrum of energy, light and information reveals to us that once we pass the speed of light, disease becomes ease (or healing) and age becomes youth. “As we vibrate at a higher level of harmony, it not only shifts within us, but within those around us as well. We vibrate at a higher level of truth, and our untruths fall away.” — Dr. Eric Pearl CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

[ASTROLOGY BASICS 101]

THE 12 ZODIAC SIGNS by Kaye Berjot In last month’s issue, we started out our Astrology Basics 101 series by discussing the Sun, Ascendant and Moon. As a quick reminder, the Sun describes what is taking place, the Ascendant explains how events are being presented, and the Moon explains how you feel about the events that are taking place. As a continuation of our Astrology Basics 101 series, we will discuss the 12 zodiac signs and how they work together. Many of us are familiar with the characteristics of our individual sun signs. You might be tempted to fast forward through the article to find out how things relate to your sign, yet I would like to encourage you to read the entire 14

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2018

article. Each sign will relate back to the previous one, and will essentially bridge the gap to the sign that follows.

because each sign functions as a step to move forward to the next sign or step in your chart.

Because the signs work together carrying bits and pieces of information to the sign that follows, I would like to make it known that we all have elements of each sign in our astrological DNA. So what does that mean?

Movement through the zodiac chart is very similar to planting
a garden, meaning that in order to get the garden to produce the proper fruits, it’s necessary to take certain actions in a methodical way. Therefore, you must go through one sign in order to get through to the next.

It means that somewhere in your chart you have Virgo, Aries, or any other sign characteristic, even when your birth sign (sun sign) is different. In layman’s terms, it means that you exhibit all of the zodiac signs somewhere in your chart. I find it useful to understand how the signs work together as a collective,

For this article I am using the analogy of planting a garden with the intent of making it easy to understand how each sign plays a role in the astrology process. To set the tone, I will not be speaking of the traditional characteristics of each sign. This is because many of the char-

acteristics that are attributed to signs are characteristics of the planets that rule them, and not of the signs themselves. In future articles we will speak of the planets that rule the zodiac signs, yet for now we will concentrate on the functions of each sign within the collective process. As you read, please remember that we are using the analogy of planting a garden. Aries (March 21-April 19) represents the seeds that we as individuals want to plant. Taurus (April 20 - May 20) is the process of planting the seeds. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) provides the environment where seeds break through the earth and become fertile seedlings (baby plants). Cancer (June 21 – July 22) is where you nurture and protect the seedling in order to promote increased growth. Leo (July 23 – August 22) is the growth phase where the seedling grows upwards and moves closer to the sun. Virgo (August 23 – Sept. 22) is the step where we analyze which plants are productive, and which plants are not productive.

where we make room for a more stable foundation so that we can plant new seeds in the garden.

In next month’s article we will discuss the houses in astrology, and how they relate to the signs.

Upon movement through all 12 signs the cycle will repeat itself.

Here is a brief exercise that may be helpful to bridge the gap from Astrology Basics 101: Sun, Ascendant and Moon to this article:

Summary: Seeds are our ideas, our passions, or can represent our selves, and one thing is certain, each sign has a role to play within the process, and if one sign does not fulfill its responsibility, the garden (process) does not flourish (work). For the most part, it’s a team effort. The mottos for each sign are as follows: 1. Aries – I am 2. Taurus – I have 3. Gemini – I communicate 4. Cancer – I nurture 5. Leo – I will 6. Virgo – I analyze 7. Libra – I balance 8. Scorpio – I desire 9. Sagittarius – I understand 10. Capricorn – I build 11. Aquarius – I know 12. Pisces – I believe

Create a sentence using the following method. For the example we are using Libra. Example of Sun Sign:
Your Sun Sign + the motto and responsibility of the sign. • I am balancing what will be harvested. Example of Ascendant Sign:
Your ascendant + motto and responsibility of the sign.
• The external environment views me as someone who makes balanced decisions. Example of Moon Sign:
Your moon + motto and responsibility of the sign.
• I am emotional about making balanced decisions. See you next month! Kaye Berjot is a transformational astrologer located in Little Rock, AR. If you would like guidance through a reading of your chart please contact her at: kayeberjot@gmail.com

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) is the step where we decide which plants will be harvested. Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) is the stage where we ask the question, “did we produce enough harvest to get us to where we need to go”, or better yet “did we get what we desired?” Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) is the step where we ask, “what have we learned from the process?” Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) is the stage where we ask, “how can we build a more solid foundation?” Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) is the stage where we know what we need to do in order to build a more solid foundation. Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) is the area CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

[FROM THE HEART]

A DIFFERENT KIND OF VALENTINE by Alan Cohen February is the month of Valentines, when our thoughts turn to love. Usually, we give Valentine’s gifts and affection to romantic partners. This month, I would like to shift our focus to expressions of love to our family, in particular, our parents. While reading Soul Friends: The Transforming Power of Deep Human Connection by Stephen Cope, I came upon a quote by Buddha that caused me to put the book aside and think for a long time: “...The debt of gratitude we owe to our parents is so great that we could carry them on our backs for our entire lives and yet still never fully repay it.” 20

FEBRUARY 2018

Wow. When I was growing up, I did not appreciate my parents. I was busy living out my own desires, figuring out who I was, and exploring the world. I took mom and dad for granted. I had judgments about them and wished they were otherwise. At times, I was disrespectful. I was a self-involved teenager. My father passed away when I was 18 years old, before I reached a stage of life when I became more conscious about my relationships, so I never got to express my appreciation to

him. As I have matured, I have reconsidered the many kindnesses my folks showed me. They didn’t have much money. My father drove a bus at odd hours, and my mother worked in a hat store during the day and at a factory at night. They did everything they could to keep me safe, comfortable and happy. For most of my childhood, we lived in an awful section of the city, where crime and depravity were rampant. Realizing the dangers of this environment, they worked harder to earn more money to move to a nicer part of town where the rent was quite high. They performed many other extraordinary generous acts. Despite their human frailties and habits, I judged; their parenting was borne of pure love. Looking back now, my heart is bursting with gratitude I wish I had shared with them when they walked the earth. My regret in not expressing this when I could have, is offset by the comfort that wherever they are now in God’s great kingdom, they receive my appreciation.

calls for love, we ease our own pain and clear the way for us to help them.

Perhaps your parents were not so loving and you were subjected to mistreatment or abuse. Perhaps one or both of your parents were alcoholic or had some other dysfunctional habit. Perhaps they fought bitterly, or one was absent, or they divorced when you were young. Perhaps you harbor resentment, hatred or guilt about your relationship with them. Perhaps you still have a hard time being with one or both of them. Perhaps you blame them for imprinting you with negative programming that has created pain in your own relationships, and you feel thwarted from the reward you desire.

Alan Cohen is the author of the bestselling “A Course in Miracles Made Easy.” For more information about Alan’s books and videos, free daily inspirational quotes, online courses and weekly radio show, visit www.alancohen.com.

Finally, consider how you grew as a result of the challenges your parents posed to you. Did you learn to be more independent, or set boundaries, or dig in to find worth within yourself that they were denying you? Some teachers say that sometimes we choose our parents because they help us develop soul strength we would not have gained if our situation was easier. Thus, they were our friends who helped us grow and step into our own power as adults. Most Asian families have altars in their homes honoring their ancestors—a practice we could well gain from doing ourselves. If you don’t wish to build an altar to your parents in your living room, you can create a sacred space for them in your heart. This year don’t reserve Valentine’s gifts for your honey only. Honor those who love you more than you know.

If so, there are three ways you can reframe your family experience to open you to more appreciation. The first is to reach for elements of their parenting that you genuinely value. Even if they were bad parents in many ways, they were probably good parents in some ways. What kindnesses did they show you? How did they encourage you? Who were they when they were at their best? They loved you somehow. Feel around for the gifts they did deliver to you. They are there. When you notice those blessings, they will expand. Next, gain compassion for your parents by recognizing that their acts that caused you pain issued from their own pain. “Hurt people hurt people.” I have coached many clients who are seeking to make sense of their relationship with a dysfunctional parent. I ask them, “What was your parent’s own pain? Who trained him or her to be fearful and mean?” In every instance, my client traces their parent’s dysfunction back to some abuse that parent received from their own parent or another authority figure. The client’s parent did not have the skills or tools to achieve healing, so they passed their pain on to their children. A Course in Miracles tells us that every act is either a skillful expression of love or a call for love. When we reframe our parents’ negative behaviors as CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

HOW TO ATTRACT THE RELATIONSHIP YOU TRULY WANT WITH FENG SHUI by Kristina Hollinger Anyone can be in a relationship, but being in one that is fulfilling and harmonious is not always easy. It takes some effort to attract the love you truly want. Feng shui can help you! Whether you are looking for a relationship, or if you are already in one, everyone could use a little help in the love department. With Valentine’s Day upon us, and in the spirit of love, here are two relationship feng shui tips. These feng shui enhancements are a great way to attract the relationship you desire. Let’s get started! TIP #1: BALANCE MASCULINE AND FEMININE ENERGY One basic principle of feng shui is the balance of yin and yang. The more aware and knowledgeable you are about the balance of yin and yang in your home or bedroom, the more balance you will experience in your relationship. Balance in a relationship is important because it means that both people feel understood and respected. And just as important, both parties give equal attention to the relationship so that it can flourish and evolve with the natural rhythms of life. You can achieve harmony in your relationships by representing a balance of yin and yang energy in your space. Yin is the feminine energy represented by dark colors (black), soft textures and dim lighting. Yang is the masculine energy represented by bright colors (white), patterns and lighting. Which side of the bed do you sleep on? Your bed also possesses yin and yang energy. When looking at your bed, the right side is the masculine yang side and the left side is the feminine yin side. If you are a male, sleep on the right. If you are female, sleep on the left. What happens if a female sleeps on the right, yang side? If she is single, she is taking up the masculine energy. She is not leaving space for a male energy to enter her life. If a female sleeps on the masculine side while in a relationship, she may feel like she is doing a lot more of the work in the relationship. Since her partner is occupying the feminine side of the bed, he may have difficulty completing projects or bringing in as much revenue to the household as he could. If you feel like there is an imbalance in the relationship, make sure the female is sleeping on the left yin side, and the male is on the right yang side. TIP #2: KNOW YOURSELF BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE Many people go straight to the Relationship Gua of their house to enhance their relationship. The truth is, you need to spend some time in the Wisdom and Knowledge Gua to attract the relationship you truly want.

The Wisdom and Knowledge Gua is a great place to focus if you feel like you keep dating Mr. Wrong, or if you feel like your partner just doesn’t understand you and there is a disconnect. The truth is it’s NOT them… It’s YOU! You need to spend some time in the Knowledge Gua to get some self-knowledge on what it is that you truly want and need from a partner. Once you get clear on your desires, you will be able to articulate that to someone else. How do you enhance the Wisdom and Knowledge Gua? 1. Locate the Wisdom and Knowledge Gua in your home. Upon entering the front door of your house, the Wisdom and Knowledge Gua is on the far left side at the front of the house. (See the BaGua map). 2. Spend time in this room. Do you like it? Is it free of clutter? Have you updated the paint or rearranged the furniture lately? Take some time cleaning this area with the intention of getting a better understanding of who you are and what you value in life. As you physically clean and remove clutter, you symbolically release old, limiting beliefs about yourself, and open up space for clarity and newness to emerge. 3. Activate the Wisdom and Knowledge Gua with turquoise, the earth element, or the fire element. Turquoise represents deep blue water and a greater depth of knowledge. The earth element can be represented by squares and rectangles, such as a picture of floral artwork. The fire element can be represented by triangles, candles, or red. Fire creates earth; it also activates the Gua and “lights up” your knowledge. There are many other feng shui enhancements that can help you make room for love in your life. However, I’ve focused on these two suggestions because they are less well known. Follow these two tips and let me know how they work for you! Until next time…

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER February 2018 by Tara Aal

Overview Welcome to February! Astrologically, this month is like a soothing bath, as Venus, Mercury, and then the Sun, begin their transits of Pisces. No planets are retrograde, and we will not even experience a Full Moon. Perhaps a little healing salve for the body, mind and soul will have the time to soak in – we can all use a period of respite and rejuvenation. Astrology is like a map of your personal wiring and energy. It also reminds you of your deepest desires and intentions for growth. It’s an amazing tool to bring about awareness, raise consciousness, and increase empathy and compassion. Check your natal chart out at www.astro.com. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete her orbit through the 12 signs, spending approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is void-ofcourse (VoC), it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets until it leaves the sign that it’s in. We sometimes say the Moon is floating between signs during these times, and it creates a sense of timelessness. You can embrace these events by slowing down and tuning into your inner guidance. It’s not the best time to start new things, but it’s a perfect opportunity to make room for what’s to come. If you want to know more, check out www.moontracks.com. The New Moon on February 15 will be in the sign of Aquarius, the Water Bringer. In a sweet way, we can imagine this Aquarius New Moon ushering in the water of Pisces - for the Sun enters Pisces, the sign of the primordial sea; the ocean of life, just days after the New Moon. New Moon is the best time to set forth wishes and intentions, and in the sign of Aquarius, consider initiating new ways of progressing and liberating yourself and others. Where or how have things become too dry and rigid, desperately needing the renewing power of water? Visualize yourself as the figure in The Star Tarot card – how can you bring hope, healing, fresh ways of thinking, beauty and freedom into your life, and into the world? The Star of Hope is within you. 26

FEBRUARY 2018

Thursday, February 1 Do something with the abundant Aquarian energy today. This is the time to step back and see things from a more objective and detached perspective. Never lose your heart-centeredness, but practice applying it in service to a greater audience. Leo Moon VoC begins 4:59 AM until 1:14 PM when the Moon enters Virgo.

Friday, February 2 Hypersensitivity is likely today with the Moon-Neptune opposition. Some people will choose to space out and seek some form of escape from the emotional depths – don’t assume the person next to you is fully present. Moon-Neptune combinations can blow open psychic awareness and connect you with otherworldly dimensions. Reconnect with your dreams!

Saturday, February 3 This morning kicks off with a Moon-Chiron opposition, continuing the theme of sensitivity. Chiron represents our deepest sense of wounding, and in opposition to the personal, emotional and body-involved Moon, we are challenged to recognize our self-inflicted feelings of imperfection and to open our hearts to experience more acceptance and love. Virgo Moon VoC begins 1:07 AM until 3:48 PM when the Moon enters Libra.

Sunday, February 4 With the Moon in Libra, today is a perfect day to enjoy your relationships and the gift of the mirror of “other”. How do you see and feel about yourself when you are with each of the important people in your life? How do you help them see different aspects of themselves?

individual and act upon her own desires, she can cause friction with the Moon who wants comfort, sensitivity and a deep sense of belonging. Use the tension as a spark for something creative, working with your wild emotions.

Saturday, February 10

Scorpio wants to be fully acknowledged today. When the Moon is in Scorpio, things can go dark. Ultimately, Scorpio draws us to transform – to drop the dead weight we carry around and empower ourselves to grow, and experience life more intimately. Pack a metaphorical (or real) bag for charity and fully let it go.

Venus enters Pisces, a graceful placement for the goddess of love. Venus represents personal love. Neptune is often referred to as the higher octave of Venus, as Neptune is unconditional Universal Love. As ruler of Pisces, Neptune is infusing Venus with love beyond her normal capacity. Can you feel this shift today? While Venus was in Aquarius, things felt a little less personal, perhaps even less romantic, allowing us to see beyond our personal attachments and needs. With this new sense of freedom and purpose around relationships, we are ready for the next step. Venus in Pisces will teach us about healthy sacrifice, compassion, joy, forgiveness, and the magic in accepting things just as they are. Sagittarius Moon VoC begins 5:20 PM until 8:22 PM when the Moon enters Capricorn.

Wednesday, February 7

Sunday, February 11

Scorpio is not through with us yet! With today’s Jupiter-Moon conjunction in the sign of the Scorpion, Eagle, and Phoenix, transformative potential reaches a whole new level. Jupiter-Moon aspects increase emotion and sensitivity. In Scorpio, you may find your feelings take an intense dive. Expect defensiveness because Scorpio is extremely self-protective along with the Moon. If you are willing to confront your shadow self, you will find many buried treasures.

We start today with a Moon-Saturn conjunction in Capricorn, so if you need to make things happen and take charge, this will help. We often refer to Moon and Saturn as symbols of parents – Moon as a nurturing parent, and Saturn as an authoritative parent. With both “parents” in the sign of practical, goal-oriented, authoritative and respectable Capricorn, expect an overall parental vibe today. Set healthy boundaries around what is truly your responsibility and what is not. Be your own authority, and others are less likely to boss you around.

Monday, February 5 Expect the unexpected today, especially when it comes to your moods and reactions. The Moon-Uranus opposition aims to liberate us, but freedom does not always come with ease and grace. Libra Moon VoC begins 12:47 PM until 9:57 PM when the Moon enters Scorpio.

Tuesday, February 6

Thursday, February 8 After the intensity, and potential emotional drama over the past few days, we welcome the Moon in Sagittarius. Invite the energy of the Archer to raise your spirits and renew your sense of optimism. Scorpio Moon VoC begins 1:17 AM until 7:54 AM when the Moon enters Sagittarius.

Friday, February 9 With a Moon-Mars conjunction, you might start the day with an extra dose of the fiery Warrior. Mars stirs up passion, drive and anger. Since Mars wants to separate as an

Tuesday, February 13 Imagine drawing a magical circle around yourself, and then a larger circle around it, and continue drawing expanded circles until they are beyond sight. Let the Aquarian Moon remind you of your inherent genius, and wake up to your own call. Capricorn Moon VoC ends 9:12 AM when the Moon enters Aquarius.

Wednesday, February 14 Are you committed to following your heart and shining your own light? Today, the Sun is conjunct the asteroid goddess Juno. Juno, in a marriage, represents upholding vows and commitments. If the Sun is the essence of your energy, and sense of purpose, Juno asks you to honor and show dedication to yourself.

Thursday, February 15 Happy Aquarius New Moon! Set forth your intentions now – making wishes at the very start of the Moon’s waxing phase infuses them with the fiery potency of new beginnings. What do you want to manifest in your life? Say it out loud and let the power of your words start the process. Aquarius Moon VoC begins 3:06 PM until 8:42 PM when the Moon enters Pisces.

Friday, February 16 With the Moon in Pisces, conjunct Venus, indulge your imagination today. Imagination can be understood as images of, or from, the soul. The line between dreams and reality is not black and white. Pisces, Moon, and Venus together in their greatest expression is overflowing love that bridges heaven and earth. Use this heightened sensitivity and depth of feeling to expand your heart in beautiful ways.

Monday, February 12

Saturday, February 17

Emotional drama may seduce you today. A Moon-Pluto conjunction can manifest as highly controlled emotions with pressure building. We are not always our most generous or caring selves with this combination. The underlying threat of losing power motivates us to sting in self-defense, sometimes in exaggerated proportion to the moment. Capricorn Moon VoC begins 11:44 PM until tomorrow.

Today, we experience a Sun-Mercury conjunction, and Mercury enters Pisces late tonight. Minds, mouths and talking hands may be extra active, especially when it comes to communicating and making real use of unique and inventive ideas. Before Mercury enters Pisces, there may be an extra push for freedom and individuality. Pisces Moon VoC begins 4:14 PM until tomorrow. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

THE NICEST VALENTINE Himalayan Sea Salt and Lemon Zest by Janae Jean Cooking together is a fun and affordable way to build intimacy. When we cook together, we explore each other’s tastes, we reveal quirks in our personality, and we spend quality time mindfully being together. Julia Child said, “I think careful cooking is love, don’t you? The loveliest thing you can cook for someone who’s close to you is about as nice a valentine as you can give.” For Valentine’s Day, I innovated two simple, but flavorful recipes that anyone can cook with someone they love. These recipes are both plant-based and glutenfree. Though not much is in season in winter, we can still include a variety of fruits and vegetables in our meals. Maintaining good nutrition year-round includes being mindful of the tiniest ingredients in our recipes. Himalayan sea salt and lemon zest may seem to make miniscule contributions to these recipes, but small ingredients make big nutritional impact. Himalayan sea salt contains 84 minerals and trace elements, including calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron and copper. Lemon zest contains five to ten times more vitamins than its juice. Both of these ingredients balance the body’s pH, a healthy acid-to-alkaline ratio is important for your body’s overall health. PASTA PRIMAVERA 8 ounces brown rice spaghetti, prepared 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced Light green and white parts of one or two green onions, finely chopped 1 zucchini, sliced and quartered 1¼ cup frozen broccoli florets

LEMON ZEST DRESSING 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest

½ cup Parmesan (or ¼ cup slivered almonds, toasted) Freshly ground pink Himalayan sea salt and black pepper to taste ½ teaspoon oregano 1 teaspoon dried parsley Fresh basil leaves, finely chopped 1 red pear tomato, sliced for garnish Prepare pasta as directed on package. Chop all vegetables and toss them in two tablespoons of olive oil. Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in fry pan on medium high and toss in garlic and onion. Then add frozen broccoli, zucchini, mini sweet peppers, and baby portabella mushrooms. Once all vegetables are soft, turn heat to low and toss vegetables with yogurt, parsley, oregano, salt and pepper. Remove from heat and stir in cheese (or toasted slivered almonds) and pasta. Sprinkle with basil. Place in serving bowl. Garnish with tomato wedges. ARUGULA SALAD WITH LEMON ZEST DRESSING 1 cup baby arugula 1 cup baby spinach

1 cup mini sweet peppers, thinly sliced

6 mini heirloom tomatoes, quartered into small wedges

1 cup baby portabella mushrooms, sliced

1 small cucumber thinly sliced

10 mini heirloom tomatoes

1 mini sweet pepper, sliced for garnish

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 garlic marinated artichoke hearts for garnish

½ cup Greek yogurt (or coconut yogurt)

Finely chopped green onion (dark green part only) 1 clove garlic, minced 2 or 3 finely chopped fresh basil leaves Freshly ground pink Himalayan sea salt and black pepper to taste Toss arugula, spinach, quartered tomatoes and cucumber. In a separate bowl mix together dressing ingredients in order. Toss dressing with vegetables. Garnish with mini pepper slices and marinated artichoke hearts.
