One of my favorite ways to relax is baking and cooking. Recently, I have begun an adventure of baking different breads. I love bread, and I could eat it all day, every day! Bread always brings good memories, the feeling of home and safety. In this issue, Janae Jean will tell how to make Vegan Soda Bread. I hope you will try it, and send her some pictures of your creations to Janae@ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com. We will be adding new exciting content to ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com throughout March. This month, we are proud to give you an interview and podcast with the daughter of influential philosopher and advocate of Eastern thought in the West, Alan Watts. Anne Watts discusses The Collected Letters of Alan Watts and why her father’s work is still so relevant today. Other web exclusives include health and wellness articles, such as one on the importance of vitamin D for your bones. Visit our website and follow our social media to stay up-to-date with our latest content. As the spring begins, one of the most beautiful scenes in the Midwest is the cluster of daffodils that bloom along the roadsides, the prairie paths and in our gardens. In his column this month, Alan Cohen reminds us that like the daffodils, we bloom when we make heartfelt connections with others. Let us bloom together! Until next time,

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

Q. My fiancée doesn’t like me to go out with the guys or do anything socially without her. Should it be this way? — Feeling Shackled A. Dear Feeling Shackled, Generally, it shouldn’t be this way. It’s an immature way to be in a relationship because love doesn’t suffocate and confine, but expands trust and grows the couple. This is a common scenario, especially for younger people, although it happens with elders too. I often see patterns of people engaging in new relationships to the exclusion of their friendships. I empathize with this tendency because new feelings of attraction are so strongly magnetic, yet I counsel otherwise. We shouldn’t spend time with our friends only when we don’t have a love interest. Relationships come and go, yet it’s friendships that generally sustain us after they end. Friends won’t last if we haven’t valued and nurtured them by dropping them as soon as the next love interest comes along. Partners sometimes misread their mates’ desire to hang with their friends as a signal that they’re not loved enough. Inversely, some confuse their partner’s demands to not spend time with others as a sign that they’re jealous meaning that they’re deeply loved, yet that’s a misnomer. At times, this is accompanied by a demand that the partner “check in” several times a day. This pattern isn’t necessarily about deep love, but more the beginnings of a pitfall which can lead

to control, isolation, and even sometimes abuse. It’s important to be cognizant of such tendencies. There’s a famous movie line where Tom Cruise says to his girlfriend, “You complete me”. This causes females to swoon. While I agree that it’s wildly romantic, it also speaks loudly to the mistaken notion that our mates are supposed to complete us, as if we can’t be complete within ourselves. It’s especially romantic because the man says it to the woman, instead of the opposite. Reverse the roles and it wouldn’t have played out as highly romantic, but as needy. Neediness doesn’t equate love. It’s not attractive and it’s oppressive. We can’t expect our mates to meet the complexities of ALL our needs. This puts unreasonable, pressured expectation on those we love. It’s our responsibility to nurture friendships with family and friends outside our relationships so that others can fulfill the many facets of our needs and interests that our partners can’t. Underdeveloped and dysfunctional people are needy. They come with baggage and drama. Our goal is to develop enough self-awareness that we’re conscious of our issues so we can seek tools and perspectives to heal those incomplete parts, thereby not needing another to make us whole. We try to stand as complete as possible within ourselves awaiting a partner who’s also well-rounded. This optimal coupling allows us to enhance who we are togeth-

er without one feeling undue pressure to compensate for the inadequacies of the other. Balanced people seek out balanced partners to enhance their lives, although this doesn’t mean that we don’t enter a relationship until we’re perfect because, hence, we would be alone forever. A partnership should enhance and evolve who we are, hopefully leading to a peaceful life of contentment, intimacy and connection. This advice comes with one caveat: if you’ve shown yourself to be untrustworthy and have broken, you can expect your mate to be hesitant for you to go out with your friends until you’ve repaired that trust and proven yourself over time. Trust is like a vase. Once broken, it can be repaired ... but it will never look the same again. Q. My girlfriend and I are moving in together. I told her that I need my own bedroom, and she’s taking it personally. Am I wrong? — Solo Sleeper A. Dear Solo Sleeper, At first blush, this can be misread and sting because many equate sleeping in different bedrooms with a lack of intimacy and love, but that’s not necessarily true. People might request separate sleeping quarters for a myriad of reasons, such as being a light sleeper, different schedules, snoring, bed-hogging and varying needs for temperature, light, pets, etc. It’s important to communicate those reasons to her so she better understands while ensuring how much you love her. Let her know that you still want to cuddle, share intimacy or watch TV in bed together, but that you have specific needs when it comes to sleeping, so you can get good sleep and function better during the day. Also, make sure that it’s not really about what other people think because sometimes that’s a thing. Listening To the Voice of Love Interview with Corinne Zupko by Janae Jean and Spencer Schluter

We had the pleasure of speaking with Corinne Zupko, Ed.S., author of From Anxiety to Love: A Radical New Approach for Letting Go of Fear and Finding Lasting Peace. Zupko has 10

coached, counseled and educated thousands of people at national and regional conferences, in classes and workshops, and one-on-one. She cohosts the largest virtual conference about A Course in Miracles through Miracle Share International, an organization which she co-founded. She also hosts the podcast From Anxiety to Love Radio. Zupko also serves as a corporate consultant for mindfulness practices, and she teaches mindfulness and wellness at the College of New Jersey. You can connect to her through fromanxietytolove.com, on Facebook @czupko.acim and on Twitter @CorinneZupko. The following article only contains a portion of our conversation, listen to the

podcast on our website to hear much more and subscribe on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and/or YouTube. — J.J Janae: What inspired you to write this book? Corinne: I was pretty much born anxious. I received my first psychiatrist diagnosis at the age of two, separation anxiety disorder. I was always an anxious child, but once I got to college things got really intense for me, because that was the time I broke down with really debilitating anxiety and panic attacks. Those [attacks] were triggered by the death of a student on campus. I didn’t know this student, but it was a very sudden death. It really freaked me out. After I learned that news, the

next morning, I woke up at about three o’clock in the morning in an all-out sweat. My heart was racing. I thought I was dying, and it turns out it was my first panic attack. Then for years, I had out of the blue and out of control panic attack…a high degree of anxiety. Through the help of a number of things, including counseling, and talking a lot with my mom because she was a true spiritual mentor for me. But, the thing that helped me the most was a spiritual pathway called A Course in Miracles. Through all those things, I found my way into really wanting to give back. I ended up becoming a therapist and working with one-on-one clients for many years, but I still had some degree of anxiety that followed me.

Whatever your spiritual practice is, it’s all about coming back into your being, your true self. For me, I truly believe that love is at the center of everything. Learning how to reconnect with that myself, and trust that voice of love within me was huge. Like you said, a pill is not going to take us into ourselves; it’s just like a bandage. For me, it was temporary. I needed it during the very acute debilitating times, but I trusted that my need for it would fall away as I was ready to let it go. A lot of my anxiety was existential. Why the heck are we here? If God is love then how can all this crazy stuff be happening in this world? So, I needed a spiritual remedy; there wasn’t anything medical that would answer those questions for me.

In 2009, I had another really debilitating episode of anxiety. When I say debilitating episode, I mean I couldn’t really function. It was hard for me to get off the couch. My stomach was in such a physical knot that it was hard for me to eat because it was spasming all the time. It was at that point that I started to really dive in deeply into my spiritual practice, and I started finding relief. I started noticing that a lot of my anxieties and my fears were falling away, and I knew at that point in time that I had to start writing about what was helping me. The results, from a total of six years, are in the pages of From Anxiety to Love.

JJ: I like that, in your book, you use the term “Inner Therapist.” Would you like to elaborate on that?

Spencer: It’s really interesting that your spiritual practices helped you with that. For hundreds of thousands of years humans used spirituality as a coping mechanism. Now people don’t have that outlet. They go on a medication…stay on it for years… and sometimes, it doesn’t even help them. JJ: I liked that in your book you pointed out that it’s sometimes necessary to have that medication. It saves people’s lives, especially in crisis situations. CZ: I’m so glad you brought this point up about how society as a whole has moved away from spirituality and has gone to this strict medical model.

CZ: This Inner Therapist is part of our very own mind that heals, that remembers the truth that we are all united, that we are made of love. A Course in Miracles calls your Inner Therapist your Inner Teacher, Holy Spirit. You can call it your Higher Mind, your Inner Guide, or your Inner Guidance System. It doesn’t matter what you call it, but it’s the idea that there is something outside of this limited, fearful thought system (that we all know so well). As we get connected with this part of our own mind, with our Inner Therapist, we are able to use it for healing…

issues just fall away. I feel so connected to my sense of being and the Divine Love that’s within me. Janae Jean serves as editor, social media manager and podcaster for Conscious Community Magazine. She has an M.M. in Computer Music Composition from Johns Hopkins University and a BA in Music/Education from Judson University. Janae is actively researching using electronically generated sounds for healing. His experience includes visual communications, advertising, social media, marketing, public relations and business development. Visit yggstudios.com for more information about his freelance design and consulting work. He is also a master level Reiki and traditional Chinese Qigong practitioner.

This process (that I write about in my book) is about finding your willingness to do differently and bringing your willingness to your Inner Therapist, to your Inner Teacher, asking for a miracle which is this sort of shift in perception. This ability to perceive and to experience love again is to hand it over and just trust that you handed it over. That shift is going to come when you’re ready to receive it. This Inner Therapist, for me, has been a key part for me. As I have become better and better at listening to it, which I also call the “Voice of Love,” or your intuition within you, the more I’ve come to identify with that, and the more I’ve found the anxiety CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

[ALL ABOUT TOWN]

THE WISDOM OF OUR YOUTH Featured Writer: Kayla Staley by Theresa Puskar I write this article with a heavy heart and a deep sense of despair. Yesterday, another high school shooting took place in Florida. As I listened to the radio, my eyes filled with tears as I heard the deep, excruciating pain in the voice of one of the parents who is now living through the unthinkable. I was taken aback by the terror that reverberated in the voices of teens as they described the carnage they witnessed, along with the incessant nightmares they now struggle through. Where is the hope? How can we heal? I believe that one of the most powerful ways to do so is through creative expression. Sharing our feelings through music, dance or writing can be healing for both the creator and their audience. This fall, I started substitute teaching to supplement my income while I continue on my entrepreneurial journey. As I worked with the high school

students, I was very moved by their insightfulness, introspection and openness. I remember where I was emotionally at their age, and I don’t believe I had nearly as much wisdom or maturity. One of the classes I oversaw was creative writing. On one particular day the students were compiling and printing several of the poems. Many shared their work with me. I was taken aback, and in several instances, moved to tears. It is for this reason that I suggested the magazine highlight some of the gifted millennial and post-millennial writers in upcoming issues. So, this month I will not be reviewing an event. However, I am excited about introducing you to one of the many teen writers I had an opportunity to interview. I don’t believe there is any better time for this introduction! “Many feel invisible, but few say it. Some of my friends think they are not entitled because they haven’t been through much trauma. They feel they are not worthy, but I don’t believe they need to earn a title to speak.” — Kayla Staley The first writer in our new The Wisdom of Our Youth series is Kayla Staley. She is a sophomore, and while she is young, she has a real maturity about her. She reminds me of so many of the students with whom I have spoken. Several of her schoolmates have already suffered through anxiety disorders, financial hardships and broken families. They’ve

been through rehab, drug addiction counseling and inpatient programs. While Kayla has gone through some of her own life challenges, she manages to maintain a positive attitude. She shared two poems, both of which really resonated with me. The first, entitled Invisibility, took me back to a place where, as a student, I felt alone, afraid and uncomfortable:

IN YOUR DREAMS

INVISIBILITY

But is a melting pink, blue, and red sunset on a beach Or a restaurant with me as head chef, A sea of blue beneath my feet as I walk a glass bridge Or a giant blooming ball gown, really so far fetched to you

What’s it like to not feel this way? To not feel like the world shrinks around you at the slightest mistake To not wake up dreading each day To not have to triple check every move you try to make Tell me what it’s like to not fear the unknown Because I can’t even walk into a restaurant without reciting their dishes in my head In fear of making the staff laugh and groan At the incorrectly pronounced words I have just said What’s it like to not have to “go to the bathroom” after a terrible presentation? To not hide there till the end of class so you don’t have to face anyone To not panic the entire duration To not feel your mind come loose to a point where it’s almost undone Tell me what it’s like to be so proud Because I can barely stand in front of a class without shutting down inside My voice strains the whole time as I look into the crowd And if they clapped for me or as an apology to me is something I can never decide What’s it like to not think about what everyone else is going say? To not have to peel your orange in the bathroom because someone may ask about it To not have to find outfits without the same colors or patterns as yesterday Because someone might notice it Tell me what it’s like to live your life with one voice Because I honestly can’t remember the last time I actually made something 100% my choice My life feels like an organized crime I wish to live life like the people around me To have these abilities To speak, walk, and talk so free But then why is the only power I’ve ever wanted, invisibility “I believe the greatest fear of my generation is that we will not have a chance to make this world a better place. We see where we are now with climate change and corruption. We wonder if we have gone too far; we wonder if it’s too late.” — Kayla Staley Kayla’s second poem speaks of promise and possibility, as she claims her right to dream:

“In your dreams” A statement I hear a lot these days When I talk of all the things I will achieve Or hope to one day

Well, I guess those people are right In my dreams I live a free life But, I know, in reality it nothing comes without a fight Because life is never like the dreams But that does not mean we - should stop - dreaming I know dreams aren’t reality, but they can lead to it Giving up is not an option Giving up is not MY option I I I I

can dream it can think it can see it CAN do it

My dreams are vivid and beautiful movies Why would I settle for something less? My dreams are a to-do list Why would I leave a box unchecked? Just because you say it’s impossible You can’t change a thing about them No matter how much you yell at me My dreams are MINE And I know they can-WILL become reality I think both poems speak for themselves, and for many of our younger generation. In the final stanza, Kayla asserts, “You can’t change a thing about them. No matter how much you yell at me, my dreams are mine.” Let’s all keep dreaming. If we can express our truths without condemnation and continue to create, we can cultivate greater hope along with the despair and promise along with the pain. Then perhaps, our dreams will eventually outweigh our nightmares. [ASTROLOGY BASICS 101]

THE 12 HOUSES by Kaye Berjot In previous articles we discussed the Sun, Ascendant, Moon, and the 12 Zodiac signs. For this month’s article we will focus on the 12 houses of astrology, and the role they play in our birth charts. The houses represent unique areas within our lives that we concentrate on at any given point in time. They can be viewed as the foundation of a chart because they are one of the few elements that remain constant. From one chart to another you will find the First House in the first position, the Second House in the second position, and so on and so forth. As a reminder: 1. Zodiac signs have mottos. 2. Charts are divided into quadrants with the top two quadrants representing the higher self, and the lower two representing our earthbound self. a. The lower two quadrants represent houses 1-6. 14

MARCH 2018

b. The upper two quadrants repre sent houses 7-12. 3. Every chart is different because they are unique to our birth date, time and location. Therefore, the zodiac signs can and will change houses from one chart to the next. The First House is the house of Self, and it is naturally ruled by the first sign in the zodiac, Aries. This house functions as our conscious identity, and carries along with it the motto I am. The Second House is the house of values. It represents what you place value on in life. This house’s role is to plant the values and morals of the conscious identity (the first house), and its zodiac ruler is Taurus. The Third House is the house of brothers, sisters, and brethren. The role of the third house is to communicate with the purpose of gathering and sharing information. Its zodiac ruler is Gemini.

The Fourth House is the house of roots, or put another way the house of home. The role of this house is to identify the conditions of the home. Its zodiac ruler is Cancer. The Fifth House is the house of creativity, fun, pleasure, and children, and it is ruled by Leo. The location of this house provides insight into what brings enjoyment into our lives. The Sixth House is the house of service and health. This house is ruled by Virgo, and represents health and service to ourselves. It is also the house of day-to-day activities. The Seventh House is the house of relationships. This is a partnering house and shows how we merge with others personally and professionally. The ruler of this house is Libra. The Eighth House is the house of death, sex, and rebirth. This house also represents other people’s values, and how we earn value from others. The ruler of this house is Scorpio.

The Ninth House is the house of higher learning and philosophy. It is where we search for meaning and find understanding. It is ruled by Sagittarius.

7th house/Libra - I reap the seeds that I sow

The Tenth House is the house of work and reputation. It indicates what we will be known for, and the work that we do in order to build our reputations. This house is ruled by Capricorn.

9th house/Sagittarius - Receive instruction from wisdom

The Eleventh House is the house of community, and represents the work that we do for the collective. It is naturally ruled by the sign Aquarius.

8th house/Scorpio - From death I am reborn

10th house/Capricorn - I am known for what I build 11th house/Aquarius - I know my tribe

12th house/Pisces - Though you have not seen, have faith In next month’s article we will cover the planets and their role in astrology. See you next month! Kaye Berjot is a transformational astrologer who can be contacted for readings and guidance at: kayeberjot@gmail.com

The Twelfth House is the house of the unconscious and of self-undoing. It represents an area where we might confine or restrict ourselves from our fullest capabilities. This house is ruled by Pisces. Summary: In order to grasp the true meaning of any of the astrological principles written about in the Astrology Basics 101 series it’s important to bridge the gap between these articles. This means that the Sun, Ascendant, and Moon have a direct correlation to the zodiac signs, which in turn have a direct correlation to the houses. When we link them all together we are able to see how all of the pieces link together, and how they also link back to other spiritual practices. Now that we’ve covered the mottos of each of the signs, and the functions of the houses, I thought that you might be interested in seeing how these sentences come together. You may have seen these phrases written before. 1st house/Aries - I am who I am 2nd house/Taurus - My worth has value 3rd house/Gemini - My brethren I say to thee 4th house/Cancer - My house is sacred 5th house/ Leo - I grow (create) in the light 6th house/ Virgo - I am in service to thee CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

[FROM THE HEART]

A HEARTBEAT TO REMEMBER by Alan Cohen

While checking out at a grocery store I noticed that a cashier had an unusual tattoo on her forearm. “What is that tattoo?” I asked Ciani. She smiled. “It’s a copy of the EKG of my grandmother’s last heartbeat.” Suddenly the checkout process faded into the background. I wanted to hear more. “I loved my grandma very much, and I was with her in the hospital at her last moment,” Ciani went on. “As a memory of our connection, I asked the nurse for a printout of her EKG, and I had it turned into a tattoo. Whenever I look at it, it reminds me of her, and I feel close to her.” As I drove home, I couldn’t get the image out of my mind. It jogged me to consider the value of one heartbeat. Our heart 20

MARCH 2018

beats about 100,000 times per day and 34 million times in a year. We generally go about our business taking our heartbeats for granted. Yet, I’m sure that as Ciani sat with her grandma on the threshold of her passing, she and her family would have given anything for those heartbeats to go on. In that moment, one heartbeat meant everything. One day all of our hearts will stop beating, but while they still pulse we would do well to count them all as precious. Every heartbeat represents God’s intention that you have a purpose in the world and a reason to be alive. While many of us believe we are here to achieve a notable act or make lots of money, our real mission is based on the quality of our relationships. At the end of our life it is not our time in the office we will remember, but the meaningful moments with our fam-

ily and loved ones. Let’s not wait until our dear ones are gone or almost gone to honor and celebrate them. Let’s tell them “I love you,” and do things to demonstrate that love while they are with us. You might believe that there are things you have to do that are necessarily boring or annoying, and you just have to put up with them and wait until you have some free time to enjoy yourself. Yet, if your intention is to live fully, you can turn any situation into a platform for aliveness through connecting. During a shuttle bus ride from an airport to a rental car outlet, I found the van driver to be delightful. This woman was super welcoming, upbeat and helpful. She joked with the customers and made the ride a pleasure rather than drudgery. I was so moved by the driver that I sent her manager an email complimenting her. The next time I arrived at that airport I encountered the same driver, and I told her I had sent a positive note on her behalf. Hearing that, she lit up and told me she had printed out that email, framed it and hung it on the wall of her home. The email took me but a few minutes to write, but its effect extended far beyond words.

Perhaps your reading this will inspire you to value your relationships and express your love to someone or take a mundane situation and lift it to soul reward. A Course in Miracles tells us that when you do an act of kindness, it may go on to touch thousands of people you never even meet. Behold the value of one heartbeat. Alan Cohen is the author of many popular inspirational books, including the bestselling “A Course in Miracles Made Easy”. For more information about Alan’s books and videos, free daily inspirational quotes, online courses and weekly radio show, visit www.alancohen.com.

A Course in Miracles tells us that the quickest route to enlightenment is to make the most of our interpersonal connections. While being with people can be annoying, it can also be exhilarating and healing. A Jewish friend of mine went to the airport to pick up a revered rabbi who was giving a presentation at the local synagogue. As the two were driving toward the exit of the airport parking lot, the driver was trying to decide whether to go through an automatic toll payment lane or a lane staffed by a person. The rabbi told my friend, “Let’s go through the lane with a person. The Creator gave us each other as gifts to enhance our lives, and we must never miss the opportunity to connect.” The next time I went back to the grocery store I asked Ciani how she liked her job. “It’s pretty good,” she answered, “but sometimes I get bored.” “Is there any way your job could be more exciting?” I asked. She thought for a moment. “Not that I can think of. It just is what it is.” I told her that I was really impressed by her story about her tattoo and I wanted to write an article about it, to hopefully inspire others to value their meaningful relationships. I asked her if I could use her story for that purpose. “Now that would be exciting!” she replied. When we do things meaningful to us, we set into motion a ripple of positive events that moves everyone it touches. Ciani’s grandmother loved her immensely, which stimulated Ciani to get the tattoo as a memento. I was touched by seeing the tattoo and inspired to write about it. The idea of the article uplifted Ciani and suddenly her job became exciting. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

LET THERE BE LIGHT

How Light Signifies Life
by Rohan and Mohan Perera In the introduction to his bestselling book, The Road Less Travelled, Dr. M. Scott Peck, affirmed, “Life is difficult.” Since the dawn of human civilization when the human ego-spirit was not constrained by the Great Spirit and permitted to evolve freely, transcend all other creatures and become truly conscious, ‘to know with,’ in the context of the Great Spirit, life has been very difficult for every man, woman and child. Having acquired heaps of knowledge and armed with digital technology, humanity has found things to be particularly challenging in the 21st century. This begs the question, why doesn’t all this knowledge and technology help us lead a simple and effortless life? Must we now pray that knowledge does not lead us into a difficult and burdensome life that increasingly appears to be a bottomless pit? Two thousand years ago, Jesus instructed the people in Palestine, who were finding life difficult back then, to pray, “Our Father in heaven ... lead us not into temptation.” Isn’t it strange that it is our Father in Heaven who may lead us into temptation, as opposed to the devil? Actually, it is not strange at all. For it is also written that “There is none besides me.” Since Jesus walked on earth, humanity has amassed a great deal of knowledge, which has had us believe that light is that all there is; everything in the universe is made of light. Therefore, scientific principles posit that there is nothing besides Light. Nevertheless, knowledge entails being acutely aware of factual information. We still have absolutely no idea who, what, or why we are here. Moreover, we are totally unaware of our true purpose and cannot function smoothly without experiencing any difficulty. Light is the only entity in existence; according to quantum mechanics, light or matter has the properties of both wave and particle. In essence, this is the duality of the only thing that exists – creating all visible and invisible things. This light is the elementary manifestation of the body (matter) and the spirit (energy,) signifying the duality of existence. It is the eternally present Matter/Energy/Light –Body, Spirit and Awareness. However, knowledge has brought forth many notions clouding our awareness (Life), obscuring our vision of life and leading us astray from what should be our singular mission: attaining the state of this everlasting awareness – life. Awareness or consciousness has its distinct character, which is the duality of consciousness; the conscious-conscience equivalence of uniformity. It is identical to electromagnetism in its character, which also finds its duality in massenergy equivalence. Knowledge is inevitable in the growth of awareness, and conscience is the constitution of consciousness, which imparts equilibrium to awareness, bringing eternal stability and equality into existence. The true Light blessed us with this constitution that is poignantly called

the Beatitudes, the most enlightening words ever written to reveal the way to attain oneness with God. “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” – Matt. 5:48 Light signifies existence and Life. It is God. Darkness signifies nonexistence or death. Therefore, it is bereft of any source. It’s a consequence of the ignorance of our true being. Now, light can be revealed, concealed and even put out. Therefore, it has a Source. Simultaneously, it is the Light Giver who gives awareness to all. It is this fire that lights all lamps, great and small. The way we manage our awareness (life) exacerbates our difficulty or imbues ease within our lives. Conscious means to know with, and life is ‘knowing with’ the conscience of God or the Love of our Beloved God. It is the Holy Spirit of Truth, the faultless character of God, which we are called to be. Thus, it is written, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God.” In the absence of eternal light, life becomes difficult. It brings hell into your existence. By following the path of this eternal light, the Conscience of God leads us to paradise which we all seek. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. — John 1:9 In the beginning was the Light, and the Light was with God, and the Light was God. All things were made through Light, and without Light, nothing was made that was made. In Light was Life, and the Life was, the Light of men. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” — Jesus A consciousness without a conscience is akin to electricity without a lightbulb, incredible energy subsisting in the depth of darkness, a body without a spirit, a soul without character. So, let there be light in you, and let it glow brightly like a cherished star of God.

Rohan and Mohan Perera are the authors of “What is Man: From the World of Ro and Mo.” They are siblings from Sri Lanka and educated in England. In 2008, they created the World of Ro and Mo, to promote both self-awareness and empowerment through a periscope of both faith and science. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER March 2018 by Tara Aal

Overview “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” March’s unpredictability can make us feel a bit yanked around, and the change of season often triggers reactions to the physical and emotional adjustments. Are you ready to move into the next season of life? Can you feel the quick and forceful footsteps of Aries approaching? The Spring Equinox marks the first point of Aries, ushering in the fiery energy of lifeforce in its ultimate potency. It compels us out of our winter withdrawal and deep dreaming. It demands we come to life and join the fresh sprouts and blooms of creation with our own individualized expression. Astrology is like a map of your personal wiring and energy. It also reminds you of your deepest desires and intentions for growth. It’s an amazing tool to bring about awareness, raise consciousness and increase empathy and compassion. Check your natal chart out at www.astro.com. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete her orbit through the 12 signs, spending approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is void-ofcourse, it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets until it leaves the sign it’s in. We sometimes say the Moon is floating between signs during these times, and it creates a sense of timelessness. You can embrace these events by slowing down and tuning in to your inner guidance. It’s not the best time to start new things, but it’s a perfect opportunity to make room for what’s to come. If you want to know more, check out www.moontracks.com.

Thursday, March 1

Allow the Virgo Full Moon to reflect your perfection – how you are perfectly you. How are you making life a little bit better? With Venus-Jupiter and Moon-Saturn trines, we are reminded that everything above, below and within is working together. Notice how easily some things flow and put forth the effort to make good use of them. It’s easy to get lazy without struggle or opposition.

Friday, March 2

Our words carry more than information and messages. They embody the energy we put into them. Words are more alive than we realize. When spoken or written from a place of love and intention, they have the power to heal. With today’s Mercury-Jupiter trine, we are encouraged to use our minds and communication to serve a higher purpose. Use your intuition to feel the greater truth beyond the words. Virgo Moon VoC begins 5:50 PM until tomorrow.

Saturday, March 3

With Moon entering Libra, we can expect to feel more socially inclined and a bit more relaxed when it comes to getting work done. With the Moon-Saturn square, tension might take over. Let it challenge you to set goals that restore harmony. Virgo Moon VoC ends 2:20 AM when the Moon enters Libra.

Sunday, March 4

It’s the Sun’s day with a Sun-Neptune conjunction in Pisces. How are we collectively, and you personally, fulfilling our 26

greatest visions and sense of purpose? Let the very energy you run on (Sun) radiate into the Universe and feel the unlimited unconditional love (Neptune) that returns.

Monday, March 5

Are you comfortable feeling deeply? Does the intensity and irrationality of emotion send you straight to your head for refuge? When the Moon is in Scorpio, darkness beckons – because the treasure of truth lies in those hidden places. Libra Moon VoC begins 12:18 AM until 7:23 AM when the Moon enters Scorpio.

Tuesday, March 6

Mercury entered Aries this morning, and many of us notice a little jolt in our wiring! With renewed mental energy and desire to move your ideas into action, go forward with courage!

Wednesday, March 7

Venus entered Aries last night, and now our minds (Mercury) and feelings (Venus) are in the sign of the warrior. Venus in Aries always wants to start something new and likes being the leader of the pack. If the pack can’t keep up or gets in the way – they are off the bus! How can you explore love and your relationships in new ways, equally honoring the needs and value of “me” and “we”? Scorpio Moon VoC begins 2:55 AM until 4:03 PM when the Moon enters Sagittarius.

Thursday, March 8

Moon-Neptune square…our sense of comfort and security is stretched and distorted to pull us out of our self-created reality. Do you want more truth? Do you really? Neptune serves to reveal through disillusionment, to bring us more fully into awareness, love and joy.

Friday, March 9

Jupiter turned retrograde last night, signifying a time to look within for truth. What do you believe in? How do your beliefs actively weave throughout your life? Is there a gap between your highest principles and daily routine? Retrograde periods reflect re-working, re-examining, re-defining. Jupiter calls us to have confidence trusting our intuition and to claim our personal truth. Sagittarius Moon VoC begins 8:27 PM until tomorrow.

Saturday, March 10

Emotions are in the cruncher today. With Moon-Venus and Moon-Mercury squares along with Moon-Saturn conjunction, it’s very possible nothing feels very good. Capricorn Moon adds to this party. Work with it! Imagine the different parts of you (your inner committee) coming to the table

to voice their positions. Choose your leader wisely – the one who will bring everyone back together in greater alignment. Sagittarius Moon VoC ends 3:52 AM when the Moon enters Capricorn.

Sunday, March 11

The Moon-Pluto conjunction opens the door to life-changing emotional transformation. Pluto represents our higher or deeper will. It stands for evolution and will do anything to empower us.

Monday, March 12

see it yet. Pisces Moon VoC begins 7:11 AM until 12:57 PM when the Moon enters Aries.

Sunday, March 18

Yesterday, Mars entered Capricorn, and for the next two months, our energy will be infused with the need to succeed, achieve, and earn respect. With Capricorn, big ideas mean nothing, unless they are used to initiate something tangible, and lead to accomplishment.

Monday, March 19

Pay extra attention to your physical safety today. With the Moon-Uranus square, sudden shifts and changes are possible, including cars, people and feelings coming from “out of left field.” Stay off your phone while you drive and remain alert. Capricorn Moon VoC begins 9:36 AM until 4:44 PM when the Moon enters Aquarius.

Give yourself time to be still and listen to your inner voice, the one that speaks when not competing with everything around you. Moon-Pluto square and Moon-Uranus conjunction are trying to get you past your history and into a new playing field – a place where you are free to roam. Aries Moon VoC begins 1:29 PM until 7:06 PM when the Moon enters Taurus.

Tuesday, March 13

Tuesday, March 20

The Aquarius Moon brings new ways of thinking about our feelings and freedom from the ways things have always been done – even if it scares us a little at first. Take a step back from your emotional reactions, and give yourself and everyone else some breathing room.

Wednesday, March 14

How can you expand your sense of “I’m okay” to allow yourself to grow? The MoonJupiter square challenges us to go beyond what we know and what feels familiar, to create space for a greater definition of self as part of a larger, universal family. Truly, you are always “home.”

Thursday, March 15

Imagine. Dream. Love. Pisces Moon is in love with love – and for Pisces, love is free of form and condition. When do you feel unconditional love? Choose more of it! Aquarius Moon VoC begins 1:32 AM until 4:12 AM when the Moon enters Pisces.

Friday, March 16

More love – if you want it. Moon-Neptune conjunction in Pisces breaks down the barriers to the heart. It washes away the illusion that we are separate or alone. In feeling joy and suffering, we develop more compassion and acceptance. We understand there is nothing to “fix.”

Saturday, March 17

Pisces New Moon is the perfect time to set your intentions to create and experience more grace, healing, wonder and love. Make wishes to manifest your dreams and visions with faith. Start a new habit of believing in the seemingly impossible even when you can’t

Sun enters Aries, marking the first day of spring. We begin a new cycle of life – a new year. This is the time of birth in nature, and it mirrors our desire to procreate and keep our life spark ignited. Aries’ mantra “I am alive!” is not to be taken simply or lightly. It is the great force keeping our eternal spirit incarnate. It ever-resists the desire to return to the formless energy from which we come. It declares “I name myself.” Do you honor the courage you put forth every moment you are here? Even on your lowest day, your light has not gone out.

Wednesday, March 21

Moon-Pallas conjunction in Taurus reminds you to be your own champion, standing up for your needs, and honoring your worth. Pallas Athena, goddess of wisdom and justice, symbolizes creative intelligence and she’s the people’s champion. Moon Pallas combines creative mental power with emotions, leading to clarity in perceiving feelings and capacity to harmonize head and heart. Taurus Moon VoC begins 11:20 AM until 11:30 PM when the Moon enters Gemini.

Thursday, March 22

Mercury turns retrograde at 7:19 PM. Mercury retrograde happens several times every year, and we love to use it as an excuse for everything going haywire. Perhaps, it reflects the disconnections and miswiring we’ve neglected to notice, which somehow now become apparent in our day-to-day reality. Use this time to pause and observe, without giving too much meaning to things that don’t “work” or seem to go awry. What is reality anyway? If it’s like switching the channel, which frequency are you tuning into? CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

Friday, March 23 Venus squares Pluto, and she is not fond of his ruthless strategy. Pluto is not interested in pretty appearances and warm, fuzzy feelings. He is not concerned with ego, so disharmony and discomfortaren’t a problem in his domain; they instigate change, which furthers evolution. Power struggles may present in relationships today, causing a visceral response that challenges you to get beneath the surface and stop pretending everything is “fine”. Gemini Moon VoC begins 9:52 PM until tomorrow.

Saturday, March 24 Moon-Mars and Moon-Saturn oppositions often make use feel like we need to be doing and accomplishing something. Moon in Cancer doesn’t respond well to external pressure, but she is active in her own right. Make something happen today that feels good. Make the effort and then reward yourself. Gemini Moon VoC ends 2:52 AM when the Moon enters Cancer.

Sunday, March 25 Let go of any self-cruelty you’ve been wielding over yourself. Moon is contacting Neptune, Mercury, Pluto, Jupiter, Venus and Uranus today. Everything outside and within you wants you to release yourself from tight definitions based on “good” and “bad”. You just are, and you are enough.

Leo Moon VoC begins 3:54 AM until 8:30 AM when the Moon enters Virgo.

Thursday, March 29

Are you working extra hard today? Moon in Virgo and Sun-Saturn square give a potent dose of earth energy that will help you knock out your to-do list or set your priorities straight. Virgo Moon VoC begins 10:58 PM until tomorrow.

Friday, March 30

Venus steals the show. It’s her day of the week. Moon enters Libra (her sign), and

This is the second and final Blue Moon of this year. It seems the Universe is playing with the light switches. After no full moon in February, we’ve had extra illumination this month. Perhaps there has been difficulty transmitting important knowledge. Maybe there are too many technological interferences, or maybe old and new minds haven’t found a way to work together. The Sabian symbol for this Libra Full Moon: “A professor peering over his glasses at his students.” We must look beyond our old perspective to connect with the present. We must learn to listen with an open mind, even when the delivery is not in our preferred style. This Blue Moon is inviting us to be more aware of our relationships, and to appreciate both sides and our interconnectedness. We can truly cooperate and co-create, equally giving and receiving, creating balance and harmony, integrating the wisdom of past and present.

FANCY A CUPAN TAE? Irish Teatime Breads by Janae Jean What is the most popular drink in Ireland? Is it that well-known dry stout? Is it whiskey? It’s Assam black tea. The Irish consumed 4.83 pounds per capita of tea in 2016; that’s second in the world after the Turks. Irish tea is generally brewed strong, served with milk and enjoyed with a variety of breads, cakes, and other baked goods. This month, we have two teatime favorites, soda bread and barmbrack. Our soda bread recipe is a vegan take on the Irish classic with a gluten-free option, while our variation on barmbrack features dates and goji berries along with Indian chai spices. VEGAN SODA BREAD

CHAI SPICED BARMBRACK

Prep Time 15 minutes Wait Time 10 minutes Bake Time 35 minutes Makes one round loaf

Prep Time 10 minutes Wait Time 3 hours Bake Time 60–70 minutes Makes one loaf

3 ½ to 4 cups all-purpose flour (or cupfor-cup gluten-free bread blend, such as Pamela’s)

1 cup chopped dried dates ½ cup dried goji berries

1 teaspoon baking soda

6 ounces (¾ cup) brewed black tea, cooled to room temperature

¾ teaspoon salt

½ cup confectioner’s sugar

1 ½ cups coconut milk beverage

1 egg, beaten

1 ½ tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Preheat oven to 425˚F. Very lightly grease and flour a cookie sheet. Stir together allpurpose flour, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. In another bowl, stir together coconut milk beverage and apple cider vinegar; let sit for ten minutes. Then mix the coconut milk and apple cider vinegar “buttermilk” a little at a time into the dry ingredients to form clumps. Mix with a dough hook or knead with hands for about one minute, until blended. Form into a ball and flatten into a six-inch diameter by two-inch high round. Pat it with flour. Place it on prepared cookie sheet and bake for 32–35 minutes, until it sounds hollow when tapped. Cool the bread completely on a rack. Serve with butter, cheddar or your favorite nut spread.

¼ cup quick oats 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon chai spice blend* 1 tablespoon quick oats 2 tablespoons turbinado sugar In a bowl, mix dried fruits and cooled tea. Let the fruit soak up the tea; this takes about three hours. Preheat oven to 325˚F. Grease and flour a standard 9x5-inch loaf pan. Add beaten egg to the soaked fruit. Blend flour, onequarter cup of oats, baking powder and salt together. Then add the dry ingredients to the soaked fruit and egg mixture and mix well. The dough will be wet. Spoon into prepared

loaf pan. In a small bowl, stir together the tablespoon of oats, the turbinado sugar and the chai spices. Sprinkle the topping on the dough, lightly pat down the loaf to make it even. Bake for 60–70 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely on rack. Serve with butter, mascarpone cheese, jam or your favorite spread. *See this article’s post on ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com for my chai spice blend.
