Rachel joined the Company as a Placement Quantity Surveying student in June 2022.
Hi Rachel, can you tell me about your placement as Quantity Surveyor in McAleer & Rushe?
From day one everyone was so welcoming, which made settling in a lot easier. I loved that no two days were the same and there were so many learning curves along the way. They are without a doubt a great Company to work for.
That’s great to hear! Can you share what role your mentor played during your placement year?
Yes, my mentor was there to guide me throughout my placement year creating an incredible support system, encouraging me to work independently while always being there if I had any queries or wanted to bounce ideas off them.
Excellent. What did you learn most during your placement year?
I learnt so much!
The key responsibilities that a Quantity Surveyor has to undertake on a day-today basis, alongside developing my own qualities and skills such as organisation and communication.
What did you enjoy most about your time with McAleer & Rushe?
I liked the mix of being on site and in the office. I really enjoyed meeting new people, such as clients, subcontractors and being able to work with people from different departments across the business.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to join McAleer & Rushe?
I would highly recommend McAleer & Rushe as the experience you will receive is second to none, and everyone in the Company is so friendly. I can definitely say that I have gained more knowledge coming out of placement as it allows you to see all aspects of construction projects and lets you bring your academic knowledge from university to life.
Sounds like you’ve had a great Placement year Rachel!
What are your plans after you Graduate next year?
I am delighted to say I will be returning to McAleer & Rushe in June 2024 as a Graduate Quantity Surveyor!
I was lucky enough to be offered a bursary by the Company which helps with costs throughout my final year at university and means I can focus solely on studying knowing I have a guaranteed job when I graduate.
I’m looking forward to returning next year already!
At McAleer & Rushe, we are proud to have so many talented and skilled females who have influence in key roles from Administration to Director level with everything in between.
Charlene Millen Head of Sustainability
I am proud to lead the Environment & Sustainability team in the Company to ensure we are protecting and enhancing the environment within our construction projects and delivering social value strategies to leave a positive lasting legacy.
I love how broad and varied the role is, and as society transitions into a low carbon economy the work has never been more fast paced and challenging.
Tanya O’Neill first joined us as a placement student in June 2021 and was granted a McAleer & Rushe bursary for her final year of studies.
Tanya has been named ‘Surveyor of the Future 2023’ by Ulster University in their annual Quantity Surveying & Commercial Management Awards.
Contracts Director since 2024.
I joined McAleer & Rushe in 2008 after graduating from Ulster University with a degree in Quantity Surveying. I found working with a mentor was a great foundation which provided me with the tools and knowledge I needed to manage my first project.
From entry level McAleer & Rushe has offered me multiple opportunities.
Their approach to staff development and training played a huge role in me being the youngest ever person to receive the Construction Manager of the Year Award in 2016.
Empowered through career progression.
I joined McAleer & Rushe in 2017 as a Site Engineer working on an award-winning, residential development. My senior managers gave me the breadth and trust to advance within a very short period of time into a Senior Site Engineer role.
I have also been given the opportunity to mentor a Graduate Site Engineer which not only has helped to build my leadership skills but has given me an additional form of job satisfaction.
I have recently been promoted to Fitout Project Manager. I enjoy the mathematical and pragmatic elements of the role as well as the many challenges on site. It is a truly rewarding career where hard work pays off.
During my time with McAleer & Rushe I have been presented with the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects, from high rise student accommodation to inner city residential projects. My early experiences as a Placement Site Engineer and returning as a Graduate equipped me with the fundamental skills required to be a Senior Site Engineer. I have recently been promoted to Site Manager and look forward to progressing my career with McAleer & Rushe.
Site Manager since 2024. 2018 2017 2020 2022 2019
Contracts Director since 2024.
Since starting with McAleer & Rushe I’ve had the opportunity to work on many types of projects from large scale hotels to inner city, high-end, residential projects. My initial role as Site Engineer involved all technical aspects of on-site surveying.
I gained invaluable experience working closely with the other members of the site management team and then moved into the role of Site Manager.
Mentoring from my senior managers provided me with the knowledge and key opportunities to push further with my career which took me in project management and recently, a Contracts Director role.
