CEO comment
What a year for Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce; a new Prime Minister, evolved membership offering and new Chair of the Board!
The end of 2024 saw our Annual General Meeting (AGM) take place where Faye Holland was appointed Chair of the Board along with new board members joining the team, Nel Woolcott and Katy Davies. With special thanks to former Chair, Brian Jones and former Board Members Stuart Searle and Jo Evans, who came to the end of their term.
The Autumn Budget delivered by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, outlined a range of fiscal measures which have been tough for businesses to swallow. With increases to Employer National Insurance Contributions
and the National Living Wage, the costs of employment are on the rise. Subsequently many businesses are likely to dampen their investment and recruitment intentions. There was commitment to help Cambridge realise its full growth potential and the delivery of key infrastructure projects such as East West Rail. The ‘Get Britain Working’ White Paper has been published following the budget and Cambridge & Peterborough have been chosen to lead a Youth Guarantee Trailblazer which is positive. We are able to see the sentiments of the business community through our Quarterly Economic Survey which can be digested on page 7. Your contribution to this quarterly survey, and the insight that you share with the team, ensures we can represent your voice. The latter part of last year saw several consultations that are critical to economic growth, which we’ve engaged in on your behalf including employment rights, skills and transport.
Last year has been one of evolution to ensure that we champion the needs of our members and provide the support to enable your growth. In 2024 we welcomed over 5,000 visitors to over 90 events and forums. We’ve benefitted from engagement at the highest levels of government
Chamber Patron Members
including four members of Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer’s Cabinet, through to the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England. Our local committees have evolved into inclusive business forums, exploring pertinent topics and providing a platform for businesses to share best practice and their ideas. Both in the run up to the General Election, and the following months, we’ve actively engaged all political parties and key stakeholders to ensure the voice of our community is heard. We have evolved our membership model to respond to the needs of organisations throughout their business lifecycle. We’re extremely grateful to our existing members for their support and commitment. We will work with each member upon renewal to explore the options to ensure your subscription delivers for you. You’ll be able to read more on page 36.
Whilst business confidence has been knocked, there is plenty of opportunity on the horizon and no doubt your organisations will respond to the challenges of the day. On behalf of the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce Team and Board of Directors, thank you to our members and patrons. We look forward to working with you throughout 2025.

Driving the Future: The Chamber Board's Vision and Activities Spring 2025

As we step into a transformative phase for the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, 2024 has already marked significant changes and strategic advancements. With Faye Holland at the helm as Chair, the Board has set a clear and ambitious agenda for the coming years, centred around three key themes:
1. People: Strengthening Our Community
Our members, Board, and team are the driving force behind the Chamber’s success. We are constantly exploring new ways to expand our reach and engage more effectively with our members. Our commitment is to create a dynamic and inclusive environment where businesses of all sizes can thrive.
2. Profile: Elevating Our Presence
We are proud to be recognized as the go-to hub for connection, support, and business intelligence in our region. The Chamber has evolved from the traditional, exclusive ‘club’ model into a vibrant and forward-thinking membership organisation. With ambitious plans to enhance diversity and inclusivity, we are actively strengthening our position as a leading Chamber for modern business.
3. Profit(ability): Ensuring Financial Resilience
A strong financial position is key to sustaining and expanding our impact. The Board, through the Audit & Risk Committee, continuously assesses investment opportunities and income diversification strategies to maximise value for our members. Recent efforts have also focused on reviewing contracts and outsourced services to ensure optimal efficiency and costeffectiveness.
Shaping the Future: Key Board Initiatives
Beyond setting strategic direction, the Board plays a vital role in shaping future activities and ensuring our local Chamber remains a powerful voice for businesses across the region. Whether in Stamford, St Ives, Ely, South Cambs, or anywhere in between, our advocacy and initiatives are driven by the needs of our members.
Our current priorities include:
Driving Sustainable Growth: Developing innovative approaches to support businesses in achieving responsible and long-term growth.
Enhancing Skills and Talent: Addressing the skills gap by connecting businesses with talent and fostering lifelong learning opportunities.
Advocacy and Representation: Strengthening our influence at local, regional, and national levels to champion the needs of businesses in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
Fostering Collaboration and Innovation: Creating platforms for businesses to connect, share knowledge, and drive innovation.
Supporting International Trade: Assisting local businesses in expanding their reach to global markets.
Engaging with Our Members
Our Board members are not just decision-makers; they are active participants in the Chamber’s ecosystem. You will see them at our numerous events throughout the year, engaging with members, fostering collaborations, and ensuring that the Chamber remains a driving force for business success in our region.

Business Confidence remains in a slump following the Autumn Budget
Business confidence remains in a slump following the Autumn Budget The BCC’s Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) for Q1 2025 - the UK’s largest independent survey of business sentiment, made up of 91 per cent SMEs – shows business sentiment remains very weak as taxation continues to be the top concern. Business confidence has fallen further since the immediate aftermath of the Budget.
• Taxation remains the top concern, cited by 59% of respondents
• 55% of firms expect prices to go up, with labour costs being the biggest driver
• Fewer firms report increased sales, investment and confidence.
“It is clear that business sentiment is in a slump following the Autumn Budget last year and this fresh dataset shows no

The percentage of respondents reporting increased domestic sales has slightly fallen to 31%, compared to 32% in Q4 2024.
42% reported no change and over a quarter (27%) reported a decrease. The marketing sector was most likely to report increased sales (40%), while retail sector was most likely to report a decrease (37%).
The percentage of firms expecting their prices to rise increased to 55%, the same level elevated level as Q4 2024.
As measured as a percentage balance, the services sector stands at +52% while the manufacturing sector stands at +55%.
improvement to that. In some indicators, we have seen a further worsening.
This is to be expected as costs have piled on businesses simultaneously. On the domestic side, tax rises, specifically the NICs increase, are consistently cited by businesses as a concern. A global tariff war is also a major blow for both importers and exporters.
The end result is a low growth outlook, weak investment among SMEs, and damage to global trade. As we see from the data, as more firms expect price rises, this could further fuel inflation and limit further interest rate cuts.”
David Bharier, Head of Research at the British Chambers of Commerce
About QES Q1 2025
• 5,221 business respondents from across the UK
• Responding businesses employ over one million people
• 91% are SMEs
• Around 38% are exporters
• 76% are in the service sector, 24% in the manufacturing sector
• Fieldwork took place between 10 February - 10 March 2025

Overall, 20% of respondents reported an increase to plant/equipment investment in the past three months, while 54% reported no change, and 26% reported a decrease.
Wide sectoral disparities remain, with 40% of hospitality firms reporting a scaling back of investment plans and 35% of retailers.
Taxation remains the top concern for respondents, with 59% citing this, down slightly from 63% in Q4 2024.
Concern about inflation has increased since the previous quarter – 53% compared to 47% in Q4. Concern about interest rates remains at 28%, the same level as Q4.

Comment from Connor Butler, Engagement Manager

At the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, the Member Voice is at the very core of everything that we do and has been for over 100 years. It’s a great honour to be able to do my part to strengthen that voice through local engagement. Across the county we hold local events for members where they can share with us their successes and opportunities but also their struggles and pain points. With the Government’s Spending Review due to conclude in late spring we hope to see commitment to invest in the region’s infrastructure not limited to but including Ely and Haughley junctions. The wider East of England has been receiving less than £8bn less per capita than the national average which will have significantly hindered growth. Your local Chamber will continue to advocate on your behalf to ensure there are positive outcomes for Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Stamford.

Empowering the Future:
The Importance of Apprenticeships for Young Talent and Businesses

National Apprenticeship Week took place in February, bringing together businesses, educators, and aspiring professionals across the United Kingdom to celebrate the incredible value that apprenticeships bring. This annual event highlights the vital role apprenticeships play in shaping careers and strengthening businesses, fostering a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of rapidly evolving job markets.
Why Apprenticeships matter
Apprenticeships provide a unique blend of hands-on experience and formal education, ensuring that individuals develop the practical skills and knowledge needed to thrive in their chosen industries. Unlike traditional academic routes, apprenticeships offer real-world learning opportunities, allowing apprentices to gain valuable workplace experience while earning a salary. This approach not only enhances employability but also provides a clear pathway to longterm career success.
For businesses, apprenticeships serve as a powerful tool for talent development. By investing in apprentices, companies can cultivate a workforce tailored to their specific needs, ensuring employees are trained in industry-relevant skills. This is particularly crucial in sectors experiencing rapid transformation, such as construction, technology, and green energy, where skills shortages present ongoing challenges. Apprenticeships help bridge the gap between education and
employment, ensuring businesses remain competitive and innovative.
The benefits for Young Talent and Employers
For Apprentices:
• Earn while you learn – Apprentices receive a salary while gaining qualifications, reducing financial burdens compared to university tuition fees.
• Industry-specific expertise – Apprentices train in realworld environments, gaining practical skills that are directly applicable to their chosen careers. • Enhanced career-prospects – Many apprentices secure permanent employment with their training employers, ensuring a smooth transition into the workforce.
• Nationally recognised qualifications – Apprenticeships provide formal qualifications that are highly valued by employers, enhancing job prospects.
For Businesses:
• Access fresh talent – Apprentices bring new ideas, energy, and enthusiasm, contributing to business growth and innovation.
• Reduce recruitment costs – Training apprentices internally helps businesses develop a skilled workforce without the high costs associated with external recruitment.
• Increase staff retention – Apprenticeship programs create a sense of loyalty and engagement, leading to a more committed workforce.
• Tailored skills development – Employers can shape apprentices’ training to align with company goals and industry needs.
Funding Support: The Apprenticeship Levy
To encourage businesses to invest in apprenticeships, the UK government provides financial support through the Apprenticeship Levy. Large employers contribute to this levy, which funds apprenticeship training across various sectors. However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can also benefit through levy transfers, where larger businesses allocate unused funds to help smaller organisations cover apprenticeship costs. This system ensures that businesses of all sizes can take advantage of apprenticeships without financial barriers, making it easier for companies to train and develop future talent.

Equal Pay for Equal Work: What You Need To Know
Do employees have the right to equal pay for equal work? In this day and age, the answer might seem straightforward – of course, employees are entitled to equal pay for equal work. However, despite widespread awareness of this core principle, many large businesses still fall short of compliance, exposing themselves to significant legal risks, potential damages, and reputational harm from public scrutiny.
Let’s examine a recent case where this occurred, understand what went wrong, and explore how you can ensure compliance while protecting your business’ interests…
Do Employees have the Right to Equal Pay for Equal Work?
Yes - employees do have the right to equal pay for equal work. The Supreme Court’s decision in the landmark Asda Stores v Brierley case confirmed that
employees are entitled to equal pay for work of equal value if certain conditions are met. Specifically, workers must be on substantially the same terms as those in different roles unless any differences can be objectively justified by material factors on a non-discriminatory basis.
Building on this precedent, a recent Employment Tribunal decision found that Next had engaged in sex discrimination. The retail giant paid its sales consultants - most of whom were women, lower hourly rates than their warehouse operatives, who were primarily men. The Tribunal rejected Next’s argument that the pay disparity was justified by higher market rates for warehouse work. This ruling potentially opens the door for over 3,500 current and former Next employees to file equal pay claims.
What Should Employers Do to Ensure Compliance?
To ensure compliance with the Equality Act 2010, employers should conduct an equal pay audit. This helps verify that your pay structures are fair, transparent and aligned with legal requirements, which mandate that men and women be paid equally for work that is the same, similar, equivalent or of equal value. The latter can apply even if the work isn’t identical, but is comparable in terms of effort, skill, and decisionmaking.
It’s important to note that potential claims for unequal pay can go back up to six years after an employee leaves the company, so taking proactive steps now could prevent costly legal issues in the future. For further assistance with this matter, please don’t hesitate to contact our HR/Legal Advice Line Team for FREE on 01455 852 028, where a team of experts can assist with your individual needs.

International Trade
Developments in the UK
March saw significant fluctuations in the landscape of international trade, particularly in light of recent political developments in the United States. With former President Donald Trump returning to power, many analysts are speculating on the implications for global trade, especially regarding the UK.
Impacts of Donald Trump's Return
Trade Policies Revisited: The United States has imposed a blanket 10 per cent tariff on UK exports, which will sit alongside the already announced 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium, and cars and other automotives.
UK – US Trade Agreement: The 10 per cent tariff is half of what was expected but still represents a hit of up to £6bn to UK businesses exporting to the US and will dent the UK’s economic growth. Other countries and trade blocs have been hit with higher tariffs, the EU faces 20 per cent, and retaliatory measures from some are likely.
A snap poll, by the British Chambers of Commerce, of more than 600 business, has revealed that 62 per cent of UK firms with trade exposure to the USA are taking a hit from the tariffs
Updates on UK Trade Performance
Export Growth: Recent data indicates a modest increase in UK exports, buoyed by demand in sectors such as pharmaceuticals
Expanding Horizons: Supporting International Business Development
In recent months, I have been dedicated to helping businesses expand into new international markets, focusing on strategic initiatives that foster growth and opportunity for our members.
One of our key projects has been facilitating meetings with potential customers in West Africa. Over the past four months, we have worked diligently to connect our member with promising business prospects in this dynamic region. These meetings have not only opened doors for new partnerships but have also provided invaluable insights into the unique market landscape of West Africa.
In addition to these one-on-one connections, we recently organised a successful international trade event centred on
and technology. However, uncertainty surrounding global trade policies could temper this growth.
Import Challenges: The UK continues to face challenges with imports, particularly from the EU, due to lingering effects of Brexit. Supply chain disruptions and regulatory differences remain significant barriers.
Global Trade Environment
EU Relations: The UK's relationship with the EU remains a focal point, with ongoing negotiations regarding trade terms and regulations. The EU continues to be one of the UK's largest trading partners, and any shifts in policy from the US could have ripple effects.
China Relations: The UK has been navigating its relationship with China carefully, balancing economic interests with geopolitical concerns. Trump's stance on China may influence UK trade strategies moving forward.
Looking Ahead
The British Chambers of Commerce has urged a measured response, encouraging UK firms to renegotiate with US partners, explore alternative markets, and utilise government support schemes like the British Business Bank’s Growth Guarantee. Despite rising tensions and uncertainty, there remains cautious optimism that a balanced UK-US trade agreement can still be reached.
exploring new markets. This event featured an impressive lineup of speakers and panellists who shared their expertise on navigating the complexities of international trade. Attendees gained practical knowledge and strategies to enhance their global reach, making the event a resounding success.
Moreover, we have been actively delivering training sessions on various aspects of international trade. These training programs are designed to equip our members with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of global markets effectively. From understanding trade regulations to mastering export strategies, our training initiatives empower businesses to approach international expansion with confidence.
As we continue to support our members in their international business development efforts, we remain committed to providing resources and opportunities that empower businesses to thrive on a global scale.

From Crossroads to Careers: A Journey Through Apprenticeships

A Personal Path to Professional Passion
Apprenticeships have the power to shape careers, open unexpected doors, and provide a solid foundation for lifelong success. For James Whybrow, Group Director of Apprenticeships and Employer Engagement at Inspire Education Group, this journey began over 25 years ago as an apprentice himself. In his own words, he reflects on how that experience shaped his career, why he is passionate about supporting apprentices today, and how businesses can harness the benefits of work-based learning.
My journey into apprenticeships began 25 years ago as an apprentice myself. Fresh out of college, I stood at a familiar crossroads: follow a conventional path or forge my own. While my father’s career in accountancy was a tempting guide, I was drawn to the dynamic
worlds of banking and retail management. Hands-on learning suited me best, a realisation shaped by work experience during my studies.
Determined to find the right opportunity, I wrote to 35 employers. Ten responded, three interviewed me, and two offered positions. I chose the one that provided the strongest support and growth potential, more valuable than just a higher salary. In 1997, at 18, I began my apprenticeship with a local accountancy firm. Alongside my work, I attended evening classes at a local college, supported by a workplace mentor and a dedicated assessor who monitored my progress.
Back then, apprenticeship funding and structures were different, but the local Chamber of Commerce played a vital role in supporting both me and my employer. That connection with the Chambers of Commerce has remained throughout my career. As I progressed through Levels 2, 3, and 4, I experienced firsthand the power of structured, work-based learning, a model I champion today.
The Spark of Potential: Why I Love My Job
I genuinely believe I have the best job in the world. Each year, I witness the incredible transformation of around 300 new apprentices, where for nearly three-quarters of them, take their first steps into professional life. It’s a defining moment. Guiding them through those first, sometimes daunting, steps is a privilege. Their enthusiasm is infectious, their hunger to learn inspiring. What makes this journey even more rewarding is its diversity, each apprentice's path is unique. It’s not just about filling roles; it’s about nurturing talent and shaping futures, one success story at a time.
Investing in Tomorrow: IEG Apprenticeships for Business Growth
To businesses yet to discover the power of apprenticeships, I say: envision your future. IEG’s programs provide skilled, workplace-ready talent that

Backed by government initiatives, they offer a cost-effective way to shape the future workforce. IEG apprentices integrate seamlessly into business culture, driving productivity from day one. By partnering with us, employers gain access to a skilled talent pipeline, contribute to regional skills development, and build a lasting legacy of success.
Don’t just fill a role, invest in the future with IEG apprenticeships.

Building Skills, Building Careers: Suzanne Dellar on Baker Perkins' apprenticeship success

For over a century, apprenticeships have been at the heart of Baker Perkins' workforce strategy, shaping the careers of countless individuals and ensuring the company’s continued success. Suzanne Dellar, Director of HR at Baker Perkins, explains why apprenticeships remain a vital part of their business model and how they are addressing the skills shortages in engineering.
A Legacy of Apprenticeship Excellence
At Baker Perkins, apprenticeships are more than just a recruitment tool—they are a cornerstone of the company’s long-term vision. "Apprentices have always been critical to our business," Suzanne explains. "Many of our former apprentices have enjoyed long careers here, progressing to senior management roles both within our company and our parent organisations."
By investing in apprentices, Baker Perkins ensures that essential skills are developed in-house, fostering
expertise tailored to the company’s evolving needs. "Apprenticeships allow us to provide the exact training required for participants to move up into more senior positions," Suzanne says. "This ensures continuity of knowledge and experience, which is crucial for our business."
Tackling Skills Shortages Through Apprenticeships
Engineering is a sector that requires highly specialised skills, and finding the right talent can be challenging. Suzanne highlights how Baker Perkins tackles this issue: "We often have very specific skills that we need to develop. By identifying the skills that we require now, and in the future, we can recruit and train apprentices accordingly."
Beyond technical skills, Baker Perkins looks for apprentices who have a passion for learning and a hands-on approach to problem-solving. "We know that many people choose apprenticeships as an alternative to university, so beyond academic achievement, we look for individuals who demonstrate a genuine interest in engineering—often evident through extracurricular activities or hobbies."
Mentorship and Support: A Key to Success
One of the defining aspects of Baker Perkins’ apprenticeship programme is the strong mentorship and support system in place. "Our apprentices work alongside experienced engineers who guide them through their training," Suzanne explains. "We also have a dedicated Apprenticeship Co-ordinator who provides weekly check-ins, regular reviews, and ongoing support."
Despite the success of the programme, challenges do arise, particularly around finding the right training providers. "Funding for specialist providers has been an issue, and we’ve had to adapt by working more closely with local colleges," Suzanne acknowledges. "We also attend recruitment fairs and collaborate with schools to promote apprenticeships and maintain awareness of our schemes."
From Apprentice to Mentor: A Success Story
One standout example of the impact of apprenticeships at Baker Perkins is Darius Warren. Having started as an apprentice himself, Darius went
on to become a mentor, winning the Mentor of the Year Award at the 2024 Peterborough Apprenticeship Awards.
"Darius joined us after a family recommendation, initially rotating through various departments to find his niche," Suzanne recalls. "His apprenticeship was so successful that he was asked to become the mentor for the department. Now, he’s helping to train and inspire the next generation."
The Impact on Innovation and Productivity
Apprentices bring fresh perspectives, ideas, and enthusiasm to Baker Perkins, contributing to the company’s innovation and productivity. "We create an environment where apprentices feel comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas," Suzanne says. "Regular reviews ensure they are on track and provide opportunities to listen to their insights."
Encouraging Other Businesses to Invest in Apprenticeships
Suzanne firmly believes that apprenticeships are a key solution to addressing skills gaps in engineering. "The skills we need are not always readily available, but apprenticeships allow us to develop them internally. Plus, they build loyalty and long-term career pathways."
For businesses hesitant about starting an apprenticeship programme, she offers reassurance. "Yes, setting up a structured, multi-year scheme can be challenging at first, but the long-term benefits far outweigh the initial effort. Apprenticeships don’t just benefit businesses—they create career opportunities for individuals and contribute to the wider community."
With a strong heritage in apprenticeships and a commitment to shaping future talent, Baker Perkins continues to prove that investing in apprenticeships is an investment in long-term success.
Beyond the Classroom: William
Buckey forges his
future at Baker Perkins

For many, the well-trodden path to success leads straight from secondary school to university. But for William Buckey, an apprentice at Peterborough's own Baker Perkins, real education is happening on the workshop floor. Working in partnership with Inspire Education Group and Peterborough College, William is proving that the hands-on world of advanced manufacturing offers a fulfilling and effective way to learn.
From LEGO to Mechanical Fitting: A Childhood Passion Turned Career
William’s journey into engineering wasn’t planned, but it seems almost inevitable in hindsight. A childhood spent building with LEGO and an innate curiosity about how things worked set the foundation for his future. “I always loved seeing how things were made,” he recalls. While he hadn’t initially pictured himself in the field, he knew he had to push himself. “And I'm so glad I did,” he says. “It was definitely the right choice.”
The Apprenticeship Advantage: Learning While Earning
Traditional education wasn’t the right fit for William. “I really struggled with school,” he admits. “I couldn’t absorb information the way others did, and exams just weren’t for me.” Faced with the prospect of university debt and years of classroom learning, he opted for an apprenticeship instead. “The idea of learning while being paid, and avoiding debt, was a no-brainer.”
Adjusting to Working Life
Making the shift from school to a full-time job wasn’t without its challenges. “Waking up at 5:30 am was a shock to the system,” he laughs. “It was the first time I'd ever had to get up before 9!” But the early starts and steep learning curve have been worth it. The hands-on nature of the role suits him perfectly. “I learn best by doing,” he explains. “I don’t like sitting and being talked at for hours—I retain information much better when I’m actively involved.”
A Supportive Workplace and a Promising Future
Despite the transition to a professional environment, William has found the workplace welcoming. “I haven’t faced any major challenges yet, and I’m managing my workload much better than I ever did at school,” he says. More importantly, he’s gaining practical experience that will serve him well in the long term. “I’m learning how things are made, how they work, and all the key health and safety aspects,” he explains. “And I’ll come out of it with a valuable qualification.”
A Message for Future Apprentices
For those unsure about whether an apprenticeship is the right choice, William has a clear message: “Just do it! If you don’t enjoy the traditional school system, an apprenticeship is the way to go. You get hands-on experience, earn while you learn, and avoid debt, all while gaining a great qualification.”
William’s story is a testament to the power of apprenticeships, offering a compelling alternative for those seeking a practical and rewarding career path in manufacturing.

Women in male dominated fields

Katy Davies
Career Journey and Experience
I never set out to work in manufacturing - it found me. My career started in finance, first at Deloitte, then in aerospace and defence, before I made the leap into running manufacturing businesses. What drew me in was the challenge. Manufacturing is complex, fastmoving, and full of potential for transformation. It’s also an industry that really matters - creating products, jobs, and economic impact.
A defining moment for me was leading a business turnaround during the pandemic. Everything was against us, and we had to make tough calls – my first week as MD involved furloughing people I’d never met which was tough on many levels. But we came out stronger, proving that manufacturing can be agile, innovative, and people focused. That experience cemented my belief that leadership is about resilience, clarity, and most of all empowering those around you.
Have I faced challenges as a woman in this space? Of course. But most of the barriers haven’t been about gender - they’ve been about resistance to change. The best way to overcome them? Be excellent at what you do, challenge assumptions, and build a team that delivers results.
Breaking Barriers and Leadership
Being in the minority in this industry isn’t something I dwell on—I’d far rather focus on making an impact. The key to navigating it is knowing your worth, setting high standards, and refusing to be sidelined or patronised.
I’ve been lucky to have brilliant mentors and teams - men and women - who value ability over anything else. But I also believe in paying that forward. Leadership isn’t about being the only woman in the room; it’s about making sure you’re not the last. That means mentoring, amplifying other women’s voices, and creating workplaces where talent rises on merit, not tradition, regardless of gender, ethnicity etc.
For me, the best leadership qualities - especially for women in male-dominated industries – come from being authentically you. It sounds hackneyed, which is a real shame, but the best leaders I’ve ever worked with have been real humans who acknowledge their weaknesses and ensure that their teams play to their strengths. The worst leaders I’ve come across often have the air of trying to be someone they are not which never leads to good outcomes. You don’t have to fit a mould to be successful. In fact, breaking the mould is often the key.
Advice and The Future of the Industry
My advice to young women? Step forward with confidence. Don’t wait until you feel ‘ready’ - chances are, you already are. Own it! Find a great team, seek out mentors who will challenge and support you, and never underestimate the power of showing up and delivering. To bring more women into these industries, workplaces need to stop thinking of diversity as a box to tick and start seeing diversity in all forms as a massive business hack that will only make your business better. Different perspectives drive better decision-making and stronger performance—this isn’t theory, it’s fact.
As for the future? Manufacturing is changing. Technology, sustainability, and global shifts are rewriting the rules. The companies that embrace diversity - of thought, experience, and leadership - will be the ones that thrive. The rest will fall behind.

My construction journey actually started out working for a specialist recruitment firm. My boss at the time would take me along to visit construction sites and I just loved the buzz of it all. The more I learnt about the gender imbalance and the more I saw the drive from people to bring forward positive change, the more I sunk my teeth into the industry. I later moved on to the business development side of things and really felt like I’d found a place I belonged. Even today, I love to drive past buildings and think that I’ve played a role in its construction.
Going solo and setting up my own business was a huge moment for me which showcased just how far I’d come.
My previous employer had gone into administration and I took the bold step of setting up my own consulting business, designing and implementing business development strategies for construction companies. It wasn’t an easy decision to make as at the time I was
a single parent to my two children, and didn’t have anything in savings. It was a big risk but thankfully it has paid off. Seven years on, I now own multiple businesses and organise events throughout East Anglia with an amazing team supporting me.
Role Models that helped shape your career
My boss back at the recruitment firm, Mel Wilson, was just incredible. She really took me under her wing and inspired me as a young mum entering a whole new industry. She instilled that passion and drive in me and even now I know I can always fall back on her for advice. I’ve met so many more since then, too – from Michelle Pollard, who has been there for me with business advice in good times and bad. I’ve had great support from so many people in the construction industry, I would struggle to name everyone.
The Future of your industry and Advice
My main piece of advice has always been to go with your gut – if you want to enter the industry, then go for it! Find role models who inspire you and don’t be afraid to reach out for their support. What I’ve learnt in more than a decade in construction is that us women really are so supportive of one another. We all want to end the gender imbalance and empower others.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your work?

This industry has opened the doors to so many amazing opportunities for me – but without a doubt the most rewarding has always been witnessing the results of Women in Construction Anglia first-hand. We’ve helped more than 300 young women take their first steps in the industry and have watched them blossom into true construction professionals who are showcasing their skills to the masses. Seeing how they develop and hearing how much our work has helped them makes it all so worthwhile.
We are already seeing positive change through initiatives like Women in Construction Anglia – showcasing the benefits that can be made by empowering women and showing them the bright career opportunities available to them. Thankfully, unlike many other industries, construction isn’t just brushing gender imbalance under the carpet – and there are so many people and organisations across the country tackling it head on.
It’s all about promoting inclusivity at every opportunity, using the amazing women already in the industry as ambassadors who can fly the flag and be available as mentors to those taking their first steps. We need to help create and support future role models – and that goes for both young women and men.

I feel this is so important for all employees, but find women are particularly prone downplaying their skills – something I have d i h
Role Modules that led you to where you are today
During my time in local politics, I worked very closely with Anne Campbell MP. She inspired me to lead, both through role modelling and by recognising my potential as a leader and, most importantly, telling me. Having someone else believe in me in that way was transformational and is something that has stayed with me throughout my career. I am now both a mentor and mentee, each is equally important for guiding me outside of my work environment.
I believe essential skills for any leader are resilience, listening, empathy, collaboration, and communication. It’s important to take responsibility and make sure everyone has everything they need.
Advice and The Future of the Industry
IfM Engage have launched the Women in Manufacturing initiative (WiM UK), a group dedicated to increasing the representation of women in manufacturing. Their mission encapsulates many of my own: to empower women in manufacturing; to foster inclusive workplaces; to build supportive cultures; and create pathways for career growth and leadership. Their policy group has a lot of recommendations on this, which are laid out in their latest report: https://www.ifm.eng.cam.ac.uk/news/ wom en-in-uk-manufacturing-report-2024/

Both engineering and academia are very male dominated fields, and I have learnt many lessons on my path to where I am now. My biggest piece of advice would be to put yourself forward, assume you can do it and don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes. Be clear about what you want to do and why, and think about how you articulate that – so often enthusiasm and a positive attitude play such a big role in employer’s decision making.

Windows 10 end-of-life deadline explained
For many businesses Microsoft Windows functions as the essential technological backbone of their business functions. Windows 10 has been on the market for ten years and many users still rely on it, but soon it’s support will end.
When will Windows 10 support end?
Microsoft have stated that Windows 10 support will end on Tuesday 14 October 2025. If you are still using Windows 10, this doesn’t mean that after this date your services will stop. What this date determines is that Microsoft will no longer provide Windows 10 updates and security patches.
According to StatCounter.com (as of February 2025), 58.7 per cent of users are still using Windows 10, and 38.1per cent currently use Windows 11. So, we have seen in the industry a slower adoption to Windows 11 than we did with Windows 10.
What happens if I am still using Windows 10?
From Tuesday 14 October 2025 the following changes will take effect to Windows 10:
• There will no longer be free monthly security update releases.
• You won’t be able to receive technical support from Microsoft.
• You won’t receive any bug fix patches.
At Cambridge Support, we always recommend businesses have the latest security updates and security fixes. This is because outdated software and systems, especially those not receiving support pose as a security risk to your business.
Should you upgrade to Windows 11?

There are few things you should consider before upgrading to Windows 11. We recommend checking if your current PC is compatible with Windows 11. If your current Windows 10 device is compatible, you can upgrade it. This is a much more cost-effective means to acquire the upgrade. However, if your hardware falls short, upgrading might cause compatibility issues and cause your device to lag. In this case we recommend buying a device with Windows 11 pre-installed. This way you can enjoy its features straight out of the box.
For help with upgrading to Windows 11 or any advice on if your Windows 10 device is compatible, feel free to contact Cambridge Support on 01223 921000 or email at ask@cambridgesupport.com

Powering progress: the women shaping EML Electrical

women who help run and shape the business. This includes Administrators, one of the company’s Directors, Sales and Marketing Assistants, the Head of People and Culture and most recently, their first female Apprentice Engineer. But EML does more than pay lip service to helping women in the workplace – a supportive, family-friendly culture ensures all EML’s employees thrive.
A family focus that helps everyone
Family runs right through the heart of EML. The firm’s Directors are husband and wife Mark and Esther Brear, who combine running a successful business with raising five children. Esther works full-time dealing with accounting and social media, and works mostly from home with a day a week in the office. But while it might be easy for the boss to make family life work, EML ensures all employees can have the flexibility they need.
Esther said: “The majority of our employees have families, so if there is a school play they need to go to, or someone needs to collect a child unexpectedly, that’s OK.
“I think flexibility is very important, particularly for women as they’re often the main carers and if women feel they have the support of their employers, it removes barriers to them working.”
Training the next generation of engineers
Women remain massively under-represented in electrical engineering. As of 2024, there were just 3,574 female electricians in the UK. In February this year, EML was delighted to recruit its first female apprentice, Sophie Hyde.
As with all EML apprentices, Sophie will study one day a week at college as well as getting hands-on experience with the EML team. While Sophie is aware she’s entering a male-dominated industry, she has been made to feel very welcome by EML.
“They’ve been great. They’re friendly and they make sure I feel really welcome, they’re just all-round nice people. They’re very equal. I couldn’t wish for a better company to work for,” she said.
Sophie has appeared on EML’s social media channels and is keen to encourage other women thinking of training as an electrician to give it a go. “I would say to them, you need to go for what’s right and what feels comfortable for you. If that’s the direction you want to go in, you shouldn’t let other people’s stereotypes define you,” she said.
As one of the company’s Directors, Esther Brear is delighted to have taken on what she hopes will be the first of many female apprentices and engineers. “Sophie is great and a real asset to the team. We hope she’s showing other young women that

However, EML recognises women shouldn’t be the only ones given the flexibility they need to support their families. Two male project managers work from home as that fits around their childcare arrangements.
“The guys do it as well, which is nice because it’s for everyone,” Esther said.
EML is a commercial electrical contractor based in Peterborough, but with national coverage. The company tackles all types of electrical jobs, including regular maintenance, new installations, EV charger and solar panel installation, building management systems and energy monitoring. Building the Future: Gleeson Homes Champions Apprenticeships
Deborah Lindsay is an Early Talent Coordinator at Gleeson Homes who has shared her insights into why apprenticeships are a crucial investment in the future of the construction industry.

As a leading high-quality, affordable housebuilder, Gleeson is committed to providing opportunities for hands-on learning and professional development, ensuring a skilled and motivated workforce for years to come. At Gleeson Homes, they don’t just build homes; they build careers.
Bridging the skills gap:
Gleeson’s decision to embrace apprenticeships stems from a clear need: addressing the significant skills shortage plaguing the sector. Apprentices are integral to bridging this gap, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals. They are the future, and they see them as vital contributors to growth and innovation.
What they look for:
When selecting apprentices, Gleeson prioritise enthusiasm and passion for the role, whether in trades like bricklaying, joinery or in technical and administrative positions. They seek individuals who are eager to learn and grow.
Comprehensive support system:
To ensure their apprentices thrive at Gleeson Homes, the business has implemented a robust support system. As an Early Talent Coordinator, Deborah works closely with colleges and apprentices to guarantee that they have a positive experience with them. Gleeson’s Learning and Development Team provides essential resources, and each apprentice is assigned a dedicated on-site mentor for day-to-day guidance.
Addressing challenges:
Like any apprenticeship program, Gleeson has encountered challenges, particularly in promoting construction roles across both trades and support functions. However, they are actively working to raise awareness and highlight the rewarding career paths that are available.
A strong endorsement:
Gleeson wholeheartedly encourage other employers in the construction industry to take on apprentices. They bring valuable knowledge and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and growth. They encourage open communication and value their input, recognising that they bring fresh perspectives and contribute to overall productivity. It is incredibly rewarding to witness their progress and development within their industry.
Advice for hesitant businesses:
For businesses hesitant about starting an apprenticeship programme, their advice is simple: just do it! Begin with a small-scale approach, even if it is just one apprentice, to ensure that they receive the necessary support, achieve their goals and do not hesitate to reach out to other companies for advice and guidance.
CASE STUDY: Natalie Follet, Site Carpentry
Apprentice at Gleeson Homes’ Harriers
Croft development
What apprenticeship are you currently doing, and what kinds of skills and tasks does it involve?

Natalie is currently immersed in a Level 2 Site Carpentry apprenticeship. Her work encompasses both first and second fix installations, including constructing stud walls, laying joists, fitting skirting boards and handling essential administrative duties. Her training is supported by Inspire Education Group, specifically Peterborough College.
What first got you interested in carpentry? Did you always see yourself in this field?
Natalie was initially drawn to mechanics however she found the reality of the job unfulfilling. "I wanted something practical and hands-on," she explains. "Seeing a house built from the ground up, knowing I have contributed to someone's forever home is incredibly rewarding." This desire for tangible results led her to carpentry which she pursued through courses at Peterborough College.
How did you feel about school before starting your apprenticeship? Did you enjoy it, or did you struggle with aspects like exams, focus, or confidence?
While Natalie enjoyed school, she said that "The apprenticeship's focus on practical assessment, alongside the theoretical knowledge gained at Peterborough College, was a much better fit for me”. Completing a Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery through Inspire Education Group made an apprenticeship feel like the logical next step.
How did you find out about this apprenticeship, and what made you choose this route instead of university or other options?
"I couldn't wait to get on site and learn practically," Natalie explains. "You gain invaluable experience
whilst earning, which is a huge bonus and the support network from the college ensures that I'm always learning and improving".
What has been the biggest challenge or learning curve for you since starting?
"Every day is a learning experience," Natalie shares. "Hanging doors was particularly challenging, but I'm constantly improving." Stepping onto a construction site for the first time was daunting, but she has embraced the challenge.
Do you prefer the classroom-based learning or the hands-on work experience - and why?
"I learn best by doing, not from textbooks," Natalie states. This practical approach, combined with the foundational knowledge gained from her studies at Peterborough College, has allowed her to overcome challenges, like perfecting door installations, through consistent practice.
How do you think this apprenticeship is preparing you for a long-term career in manufacturing?
"Being on site gives me insights into what I enjoy most," she explains. "It helps me envision my future, whether it's specialising in a particular area or even starting my own business. The collaboration between Gleeson Homes and Inspire Education Group ensures I'm getting a well-rounded education."
What’s been the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship so far?
"Seeing families move into their finished homes, knowing I played a part in creating their space," she says. "As an older student, I'm proving to myself that I can pursue a different path and find immense satisfaction. The opportunities provided by Gleeson Homes and Inspire Education Group has made this possible."
What would you say to someone who isn’t sure if an apprenticeship is right for them?
"There's nothing better," she asserts. "If you're a hands-on learner, it's the perfect way to gain experience and knowledge. It's a big step, but it's the best step you'll ever make. Carpentry is amazing!"

From project managers to site operatives to officebased professionals, women at Princebuild are making a difference every day. Their skills, expertise, and leadership are driving forward projects of all sizes, ensuring quality, safety, and innovation remain at the heart of everything we do.
However, the construction industry has long been perceived as a male-dominated field, with women historically underrepresented. Despite this, women have consistently proven their capabilities in the sector, bringing fresh perspectives, technical expertise, and exceptional leadership to construction projects worldwide. Encouraging more women to enter the construction industry is crucial to encouraging innovation, problem-solving, and diversity of thought.
Supporting and Encouraging Women in Construction
At Princebuild, we are committed to creating an environment where women can thrive, develop, and lead. We actively support initiatives that encourage more women to consider careers in construction by offering:
• Mentorship and Career Development: Providing training, mentorship, and networking opportunities to empower women in their career progression.
• Inclusive Workplace Policies: Ensuring a supportive environment through flexible working options, equal pay policies, and a workplace culture that values diversity.
• Outreach and Engagement: Partnering with schools, colleges, and training providers to inspire young women to pursue careers in construction.
• Recognition and Celebration: Acknowledging and celebrating the achievements of women in our workforce, ensuring their contributions are visible and valued.
Breaking Stereotypes and Changing Perceptions
One of the biggest challenges facing women in construction is the perception that it is a career suited only for men. By challenging outdated stereotypes and promoting the success stories of women in the industry, we can help shift attitudes and create a more inclusive sector.
Director Matthew Pudney commented: “Women in construction bring invaluable skills, fresh perspectives, and a strong work ethic to our industry. A diverse workforce leads to smarter problem-solving, better teamwork, and a stronger industry overall.”
Additionally, Human Resources Manager Cheryl Browne highlighted: “The traditional perception of women in construction is rapidly changing, and the diversity and benefits women bring to this industry are being recognised. At Princebuild, we encourage a collaborative workplace that empowers women, ensuring their achievements are recognised and celebrated.”
Looking to the Future
As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, we reaffirm our commitment to building a future where women feel supported, encouraged, and valued in our industry. By continuing to promote diversity, offering career development opportunities, and challenging industry norms, we believe the construction sector will become stronger and more inclusive for everyone.
At Princebuild, we are proud of the talented women in our team and the impact they have on shaping the built environment. Their success stories serve as an inspiration for future generations, demonstrating that construction is a field where everyone can learn, grow, and succeed.

Intergence Systems

Intergence Systems Ltd is a leading tech consultancy and IT managed services provider, who solve complex digital and operational challenges with innovative, outcomebased solutions. Its cyber security expertise has been protecting private sector companies, critical parts of the public sector and the not-for-profit sector across the UK since its inception in 2003, from its base in Cambridgeshire.
With 50 per cent of UK businesses experiencing a cyberattack in 2024, Intergence believes keeping your business safe from cybersecurity threats is more important than ever, and so the philosophy of Intergence is to protect small to medium organisations with the same protection that multinational companies expect. To provide this visibility and assurance to its customers, it has developed a proprietary service called Stratiam. Stratiam provides visibility and insights on the performance of the company’s critical infrastructure, applications and security posture. Stratiam is unique amongst smaller managed service providers as it replicates the capability that Intergence’s customers would otherwise only get by using multiple, complex, and very expensive tools.
Intergence’s mission is evolving to develop specific cyber security capabilities to protect rapidly growing companies in the Cambridge and Cambridgeshire technology cluster. As part of their advanced cybersecurity solutions, they include Managed Detection and Response that comes with $1 million cyber insurance, and they also offer a free security assessment, to help protect and strengthen your IT infrastructure against evolving threats.
In 2024, Intergence was selected to support one of the fastest growing research not-for-profit organisations in
the UK that has a global mission. Also in 2024, Intergence was selected to advise on the operational effectiveness and efficacy of the digitisation efforts of one of the world’s largest funding endowment institutions. This has placed it well to serve the life sciences sector of Cambridge.
This practical experience has enabled Intergence’s Digital Change consultants to understand, analyse and plan the achievable steps for any organisation to adopt digital technologies for automation and self-service and thus increase operational efficiency. To expedite this experience for its customers, Intergence has developed the Intergence Way which is a methodology to guide customers to digital success. It’s based on the principles of Insight, Improve and Impact. Furthermore, The Intergence Way is guided by the principle of ‘walking in the customer’s shoes’, so that any actions and recommendations will be technically feasible and commercially viable for the client to implement. A key aspect of this is identification and delivery of quick wins – actions that will have immediate impact in delivering cost savings, greater customer satisfaction or revenue generation.
Intergence prides itself on its people with the ability to blend deep technical knowledge with a people-first mindset.
“Our clients don’t just work with us—they trust us, because whatever they need, we do our best to make it happen” –Peter Job, CEO of Intergence.
Tendring District Council: “Intergence Managed Security Services gives us instant, round-the-clock security management and a holistic view of our network. Because we know that any Cyber alerting will be managed by the Intergence SOC, we can put much more of our time into mitigation, remediation and user education”.

Celebrating 20 years of service to the community
HMP Peterborough, operated by Sodexo, is a major employer in the Cambridgeshire area and holds the unique position of being the only purpose-built prison to house both male and female offenders. This year marks a significant milestone as it is 20 years since the prison opened and began serving the community.

HMP Peterborough, operated by Sodexo, is a major employer in the Cambridgeshire area and holds the unique position of being the only purpose-built prison to house both male and female offenders. This year marks a significant milestone as it is 20 years since the prison opened and began serving the community.
Over the past 20 years, HMP Peterborough has provided rehabilitative services to help to men and women reduce their risk of reoffending and the associated impact on victims of crime. Partnerships with local and national businesses enables the prison to create employment opportunities on release, providing support for prison leavers to secure meaningful jobs and become productive members of society.
Situated in the Westwood area of the city of Peterborough, the prison is built on an historic site that was once the home of an RAF training base, where the legendary Clark Gable was stationed. It later became the location for Baker Perkins when expansion outside of London was required, eventually being transformed into HMP Peterborough. The prison was
Officially opened on 4 March 2005, receiving the first male prisoner a few weeks later, on 28 March 2005.
One site – two prisons
Although HMP Peterborough is viewed as a single entity, it is in fact two separate prisons behind one perimeter wall. This brings with it huge opportunities for colleagues who are able to develop the skills required to work with both male and female prisoners.
While the core values share the same foundations – decent, clean housing; good quality food; access to education, exercise, faith services and visits etc – the method of delivery and services can be tailored to the needs of the specific population.
In general, men and women typically respond to challenging situations differently – men tend to lash out externally, women very often internalise emotions and trauma. Taking a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach would not be effective for anyone at HMP Peterborough, so programmes and interventions are tailored to provide appropriate support that can help to fulfil the needs of the individual. Regardless of their offence, each prisoner is viewed as an individual with the opportunity and potential for rehabilitation.

Within HMP Peterborough there is a focus on taking a ‘trauma-informed’ approach, which involves understanding the ways in which past traumatic experiences may have contributed to shaping the person they are today, including their offending behaviour and their custodial behaviour.
HMP Peterborough has was also the first prison in the country to be awarded the Restorative Organisation Registration from the Restorative Justice Council. Restorative processes bring those who have been harmed by conflict into communication with those responsible for the harm – bringing together the perpetrator and the victim in a controlled, facilitated environment. Taking a whole-prison approach, restorative processes have been implemented throughout the establishment enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward.
Developing key skills for future success
Provision of education, skills and employment within the prison is a key facet of the rehabilitative process. For a variety of reasons, many prisoners have lower than average literacy and numeracy levels, which can create significant barriers to a successful, law-abiding life after release. By providing opportunities to access education in a nonjudgemental, motivational environment, individuals are able to improve their key skills and access a much wider range of opportunities. Not only does this enable them to engage in what most would consider normal activities – reading a bus timetable, working out a basic budget – it also creates an often hitherto never experienced sense of pride and selfworth.
Prisoners also have the opportunity to engage in a variety of jobs within the prison, for which they receive appropriate industry-standard training. This includes cleaning, catering, peer support roles and trade-focussed courses such as the new bricklaying workshop – all of these add to their portfolio of transferable skills in readiness for employment on release.
From prison to employment
Through the Employment Hubs in both the male and female prisons, individuals are able to gain support to open a bank account, look for job opportunities, navigate the application process and create a CV. They can meet with potential employers through organised events, discussing job openings and career paths that may be available to them.
Sodexo’s Starting Fresh programme, along with the partnership with New Futures Network, builds relationships between employers and prisons, bringing together industries that may be facing skills shortages with

individuals who are work-ready, but just need someone to give them a chance. Previous success stories span a range of industries, including construction, hospitality and retail, with individuals updating prison staff with their achievements to share their excitement at being offered an opportunity to change their path.
“I’m immensely proud of the work that the team at HMP Peterborough delivers. The dedication and passion are palpable wherever you go across the two prisons. The initiatives we have in place to support individuals on their personal journey to rehabilitation are many and varied, ensuring that we can provide a tailored approach for their specific needs. We are committed to supporting our local community, both through the reduction in the risk of reoffending and as an employer of choice, supporting the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire workforce.” Ralph Lubkowski, Director, HMP Peterborough.
Visit the prison
We would like to extend an invitation to members of the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce to book a visit to come and see HMP Peterborough from ‘behind the wall’.
We would be delighted to show you the work that is delivered to support the rehabilitative journey, including providing key skills such as English and maths.
During your visit we can also introduce you to our Prison Employment Leads, who can provide you with information on Sodexo’s ‘Starting Fresh’ programme. Through this we can show you how accessing the almost untapped resource of prison leavers can help to address skills gaps, enabling you to provide opportunities to individuals who want to take a positive step into a productive future.
If you are interested in arranging a visit to the prison, please contact Hayley Wells, PA to the Director on hayley. wells@sodexogov.co.uk
International Women’s Day
We celebrate International Women’s Day each year, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, with this year’s theme being ‘Accelerate Action’.

Our 2025 event, hosted at Delta Hotels, The Marriott in Huntingdon, welcomed over 70 attendees to share stories, hear inspiring speeches and support one another whilst building connections.
Keynote speaker was Louise Hulland, Sony Award winning journalist, TV and radio presenter, documentary maker and author. Louise shared her insights on why this day remains so important, sharing some hard to hear but very real statistics, including:
• In April 2024, female full-time employees earned a median weekly pay of £672, compared to £773 for men
• 15% of UK SMEs were led by women in 2023
• 31% of mothers worry about burnout, vs. 19% of fathers
“I always look forward to the Chambers IWD events as I know they are well organised, varied and engaging. It's a perfect opportunity to meet up with contacts made at past events and to meet new people from a range of professions”
• Only 17% of apprentices in STEM fields were women in 2023-2024
• Maternal death risk was nearly three times higher for black and ethnic minority women (2020-2022)
• 119 million girls are out of school globally
• 50 million people are trapped in modern slavery worldwide
Even though these statistics are negative, Louise reminded the room not to leave feeling hopeless –sharing 'we're far from powerless'.

Midlife 360 CIC
Chair of the Chamber, Faye Holland, then expertly hosted an insightful panel discussion, with inspirational speakers Rachel Nicholls – Inspire Education Group, Alex Schaafsma – Birketts, Kate Willsher – Institute for Manufacturing and Daisy Blakemore-Creedon – the youngest Labour Councillor.
Discussions covered a range of topics, including leadership and the change to becoming a leader with its challenges and expectations, as well as advocating for gender diversity and role models.
‘What does leadership mean to you?’
Alex shared the quote “if you’re a leader and no one's following you, you're just on a walk.” with Rachel sharing "being a CEO is balancing time spent on the dance floor and time on the balcony", both quotes emphasising the importance of effective leadership that inspires and guides others.
On the topic of the growth of business, Alex continued to share her thoughts that it’s not just about female leadership; diversity overall drives success. Different perspectives strengthen businesses and fosters innovation.
Rachel shared the importance of creating commitment culture so people feel deep connection with the purpose of the business and thrive to create success.
When discussing challenges and expectations, Kate shared her experience of promotion within the company, and explained she never expected to be promoted into her current role, instead assumed she’d be recruiting for it.
On the discussion of age, Daisy stated "success is about impact, not age”, and shared that when she was elected as the youngest Labour Councillor in the UK, she was told she had the capability for a cabinet position, but her age was a barrier. We were delighted to hear she will continue to fight for the position she deserves to be in.
On advocating for gender diversity, Alex advised to "set clear goals and be open to diverse candidates", with Rachel continuing with “create a welcoming culture where anyone can thrive".
Daisy shared that moving forward, gender, sex and race shouldn’t be barriers to leadership, but we still have work to do. Rachel told the guests to "encourage

democracy, diverse voices, and call out poor behaviour".
It was agreed that role models are so important to women in business for confidence in your leadership potential, with Rachel sharing the inspirational quote, "stand on the shoulders of those who came before you".
Before wrapping up with a networking lunch, guests had the chance to discuss these points further, relating to their personal journeys. A volunteer from each table then shared their insights with the room. We appreciate the openness and support from attendees in creating a safe space and we look forward to continuing the important conversations at future events.
“The Chambers of Commerce International Women's Day Events are always very exciting. I met a lot of inspiring women and every one of them had their own success stories, struggles, challenges they overcame and goals to achieve. Can't wait for the next event in 2026

Peter’s inspiring words left attendees with a hopeful vision for the future: “Our children will inherit a better world in the end.”

An Inspiring Story from Clare Yelland
Following Peter’s address, guests were captivated by Clare Yelland (née Friel), the owner of the awardwinning marketing agency Friel Good. Recognised as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction, Clare shared her remarkable journey -from becoming a mother at 17 to building a thriving career in the construction sector.
Clare emphasised:
• Her role in helping construction businesses secure over £35 million in contracts.
• The importance of bridging the gap between office and site staff for better collaboration.
• The need to nurture homegrown talent and break down silos within the industry.
A passionate advocate for diversity, Clare actively inspires young girls to consider careers in construction, a traditionally male-dominated field. Her powerful words resonated with the audience: “All of the barriers have made the success sweeter.”
A Memorable Evening
A heartfelt thank you goes to Nate Lansdell of A Smile A Day Photography for capturing the essence of the evening.
Most importantly, a huge thank you to all the guests who attended and made the event a resounding success. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2026!

Where history met the future - AI took centre stage at St John’s College.

We were delighted to host a gathering at the historic and picturesque St John’s College, Cambridge, for an insightful event centred on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the future of global business. The occasion brought together a dynamic mix of leaders, policymakers, and innovators to explore the role of AI and digital tools in shaping the international trade landscape.
We were especially honoured to welcome Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, along with representatives from the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC). Their presence offered a valuable global dimension to the discussion, reinforcing the importance of cross-border collaboration in an increasingly digital world.
The session was hosted by our talented International Trade Advisor, Ilona, whose energy and insight set the tone for a lively and engaging conversation. Ilona introduced our keynote speaker, AI expert Peter Heneghan, who delivered a compelling talk tracing the evolution of AI - from its academic beginnings to its growing influence across industries today.
Peter highlighted how AI is not only transforming internal business processes but also creating new models for customer engagement, decision-making, and innovation. His insights sparked vibrant discussion among attendees, with many eager to explore how these technologies could apply to their own sectors and markets.
Beyond the presentations, the event offered a unique opportunity for attendees to connect, share perspectives, and consider future partnerships. The diversity of experiences in the room - from tech entrepreneurs to international trade officials - made for a rich and thought-provoking exchange.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us and contributed to this memorable afternoon. Events like this underline the value of convening people from different sectors and regions to imagine what's possible when technology meets international ambition.
