CEO comment
As we enter the summer of 2025, businesses across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are beginning to see the shape of the Government’s evolving economic vision, with major announcements now translating into regional impact. Whilst key infrastructure projects offer a reason for optimism, the economic back drop that faces the business community today remains a challenging picture.
In this quarter we have seen significant disruption to global supply chains with the implementation of tariffs by President Trump’s administration. It is no surprise that global uncertainty was the number one concern for our business community when polled in June. These measures have already begun to impact several sectors across our region and business confidence has taken a knock. We are actively supporting businesses to navigate the global landscape, providing up-todate guidance, trade documentation, direct engagement with policymakers and bespoke support to identify and enter new markets. We encourage any business
affected by these developments to contact the Chamber for tailored advice and support.
At the same time, the rising cost of employment - driven by increases to employers’ National Insurance contributions and the National Living Wage - is placing fresh pressures on many businesses. Subsequently the latest Quarterly Economic Survey shows that labour costs are impacting 90 per cent of businesses surveyed. However, it still remains difficult to recruit with 76 per cent citing difficulties recruiting. Through the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP), and in partnership with the Combined Authority, the Chamber is helping businesses tap into innovative ways to recruit, train, and upskill their workforce. Support for apprenticeships and access to funded training programmes aligned to business need are being rolled out which you can explore further in the skills section on pages 16 to 21.
The Comprehensive Spending Review delivered funding commitments, including support for the Peterborough Sports Quarter and continued backing for East West Rail -vital infrastructure that promises to unlock growth across the region. More investment is needed, certainly in areas such as Ely-Haughley Junction and dualling the A47. I was pleased to have the opportunity to ask the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer how he planned to unlock the growth that resides within our region which is currently hindered by a lack of investment, delays in the planning system and the need to deliver much needed housing.
The launch of the national Industrial Strategy looks to renew a focus on productivity, innovation, and place-based

development. Alongside this, the new Trade Strategy - unveiled at the British Chambers of Commerce Global Annual Conference - sets out ambitions to boost UK exports, streamline customs processes, and enhance international partnerships.
The Security Strategy, also published this quarter, outlines how Government intends to support businesses in building resilience across digital, physical, and supply chain threats.
Closer to home, the Chamber continues to bring the local business community together. Paul Bristow was elected as Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough in May. I was very pleased to meet with Paul on his first day in office, a reflection on the importance he places on economic growth.
So far this year we have delivered over 57 events, engaging 2600 delegates to support your business to grow. Our flagship CambsB2B North event was a resounding success, showcasing the innovation, collaboration, and ambition that define our business community - tackling key elements such as Tech, Talent, and Trade. You can see how well the event went on pages 13 to 15.
We are also delighted to welcome three new members to the Chamber Board of Directors. Jason Mashinchi (Cambridge Kinetics), Olivia Secombe (British Sugar) and Ian Mitchell (Cambridge Commodities). Their experience and strategic insight will be a valuable addition as we continue to shape a thriving, sustainable, and globally connected business environment.
The coming months bring both challenge and opportunity - and your Chamber remains at the heart of it, working for every member, every sector, and every part of our region. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Fragile Outlook Remains After National Insurance Tax Hike
In the largest survey of business sentiment since April’s employer National Insurance rise, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Quarterly Economic Survey for Q2, shows confidence among firms remains weak.
While price rise expectations have eased back from near historic highs in Q1 – tax remains the biggest concern cited by firms. Only a third say domestic sales have grown over the last three months.
The survey was carried out by the BCC Insights Unit and the UK wider Chamber network after the National Insurance rise came into force, with the fieldwork conducted between 12 May and 9 June. Over 4,500 businesses across the UK (93% of whom are SMEs) responded online.
Business confidence remains subdued
Levels of confidence among businesses remain weak, with only 49 per cent of responding firms expecting their turnover to increase over the next 12 months. That’s up only slightly from 48 per cent in Q1. This is the second lowest figure since the aftermath of the mini budget in late 2022. A fifth (20%) of businesses expect turnover to worsen and 31 per cent expect no change.
Confidence levels remain lowest in the hospitality sector (33%) and retail (44%), showing the continued struggles these sectors face.
Profitability confidence has improved slightly but remains low. 41 per cent of firms expect profits to increase over the next year (39% in Q1), while 28 per cent expect them to worsen (32% in Q1).
Fewer firms planning to increase their prices
The proportion of businesses saying they expect to raise their prices in the next three months stands at 44 per cent; down from a near-historic high of 55 per cent in Q1. This suggests a moderation in new price rises after firms made adjustments ahead of the NICs increase. Just over half (53%) say their prices are likely to remain the same, and only three per cent are expecting them to decrease.
Labour costs continue to be far and away the main cost pressure for firms, cited by 73 per cent of respondents – the same as the previous quarter. The issue is most significant for transport and logistics businesses (88%) followed by the hospitality sector (83%).
Tax remains the biggest concern as NI rise bites
Following the employer NI contribution rise at the start of April, tax continues to be the biggest worry for businesses, although concerns have eased slightly. 56 per cent cite tax as a worry, down from 59 per cent in Q1. This quarter’s figure is the third highest on record, following the previous two quarters.
Concern about inflation also remains high among businesses – 52 per cent compared with 53 per cent in the previous quarter. Worries about interest rates continue to fall with 24 per cent citing them in Q2, down from 28 per cent in Q1.
No significant improvement in business conditions
The percentage of responding businesses reporting increased domestic sales has shown no noticeable improvement, 32 per cent compared with 31 per cent in Q1. 42 per cent reported no change and over a quarter (26%) said they had seen a decrease in sales. Hospitality firms were the most likely to have seen a fall in sales (36%) followed by those in the retail sector (34%).
Over a quarter of businesses (26%) report an increase in cash flow over the last three months, up from 21 per cent in the previous quarter. 30 per cent report a fall in cash flow (down from 33% in Q1), while for 45 per cent cash flow remained the same.
Most firms struggling to invest
As businesses face increased cost pressures, nearly a quarter, 24 per cent, say they have cut back on investment plans (compared with 26% in Q1). 55 per cent of firms say their investment strategy has remained the same, while only 21 per cent have increased their plans.
The issue is more marked in certain sectors, with 39 per cent of hospitality firms and 32 per cent of transport firms reporting a scaling back of investment plans.
What businesses say:
“Rising employment costs, including increases in National Insurance and minimum wage, are placing significant pressure on margins –particularly for SMEs.” Small manufacturing firm in Liverpool
“NI and NMW increases have all created increased costs. We are seeing more redundancy projects being requested to levels not seen since 2008.” Small professional services in Suffolk
Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said:
“The rising cost of doing businesses means confidence levels remain at their lowest levels since 2022.
“However, it’s encouraging to see a drop in the number of firms planning to raise prices. Any signs of inflationary pressures easing is good news for business and the wider economy. But prices remain volatile.
“Our Blueprint for Growth report provides a clear set of proposals to drive business innovation and investment. We urge ministers to work with us to implement these ideas.
“Businesses are clear – they want their costs reduced, regulation reformed, and skills barriers removed. Action by policymakers now, will help businesses out of this confidence slump and give firms the tools to boost growth.”
David Bharier, Head of Research at the British Chambers of Commerce said:
“SMEs are operating in an increasingly unpredictable world and have limited capacity to absorb further disruption. A meaningful improvement in business conditions will depend on a roadmap to ease the tax and admin burden, de-escalation of geopolitical tensions, implementing improvements to the UK-EU trading deal, and further mitigation of US tariffs.”

Comment from Connor Butler, Engagement Manager
At the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, the Member Voice is at the very core of everything that we do and has been for over 100 years. It’s a great honour to be able to do my part to strengthen that voice through local engagement. Across the county, we continue to host local events where members can share not only their successes and opportunities but also the challenges they face. Now that the Government’s Spending Review has concluded, we look for clear signs of commitment to investing in our region’s infrastructure - particularly in key projects like the Ely and Haughley junctions. The wider East of England has been receiving less than £8bn less per capita than the national average which will have significantly hindered growth. Your local Chamber will continue to advocate on your behalf to ensure there are positive outcomes for Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Stamford.

As a marketer, I’ve always been drawn to a mix of creativity, strategy, and results. But lately, AI has completely reshaped how I work - and honestly, I’m here for it. When it comes to content? It’s a gamechanger. Drafting could take me a couple of hours previously. Now, I can brainstorm ideas, build outlines, and even generate first drafts with AI. That gives me more time to refine tone and messaging - the parts that really matter.

long-form video content - like webinars or interviews - and it automatically turns them into short, captioned, TikTok-style clips that are actually good and can be repurposed. It saves hours of editing and helps me keep a consistent presence across platforms.
To me, AI isn’t replacing marketing. It’s evolving it.
But AI isn’t perfect. It still needs a human touch. It can miss nuance, emotion, or context. That’s where marketers come in - to guide, edit, and elevate the work.
It’s helping us connect with audiences in smarter, more personal ways. It’s turning data into action and freeing up time for the other work we love doing.
And honestly? I’m excited. Because the future of marketing isn’t about being replaced by AI - it’s about being amplified by it.
If you’re still hesitant about AI – that’s understandable - but try one tool. See what it changes for you. I haven’t looked back!

Investing in the Future: How Codem Composites is Driving Innovation Through Apprenticeships
Codem Composites has established itself as a leader in the design and manufacture of carbon fibre components and tooling. Serving a diverse range of sectors including motorsport, aerospace, and satellite communications, the company recognises the critical importance of nurturing talent from the very start of their careers.
Apprentices have become a cornerstone of Codem Composites’ growth and recruitment strategy.
Addressing Skills Gaps and Fostering Innovation
The company’s commitment to apprenticeships is driven by a clear goal: to invest in future talent and meet the evolving demands of the composites sector. As Rochelle Helliwell, Business Development Manager, explains, “Apprenticeships have been integral to our growth and recruitment strategy. They allow us to bring fresh perspectives and energy into the business, helping to future-proof the composites industry by cultivating a skilled workforce tailored to our specific requirements.”
Highly specialised skills are essential in composites manufacturing but can be difficult to find in the wider job market. Codem Composites’ apprenticeship programmes provide hands-on training in core areas such as laminating, trimming, quality control, and innovation. The company works closely with Inspire Education Group and Peterborough College to ensure apprentices receive a well-rounded education, combining theoretical learning with practical workplace experience.
What Codem Looks for in an Apprentice
Codem seeks individuals who demonstrate enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and a passion for producing high-quality work. “A commitment to continuous improvement and adaptability are qualities that make candidates stand out,” says Rochelle.
Supporting and Mentoring the Next Generation
Apprentices at Codem Composites benefit from comprehensive training that blends classroom instruction with real-world application. The company’s strong partnership with education providers guarantees that the curriculum remains aligned with industry needs. Rochelle highlights, “Working closely with Inspire Education Group and Peterborough College ensures our apprentices receive a blend of practical experience and up-to-date theoretical knowledge. This collaborative approach means they gain the skills they need to thrive both in the classroom and the workplace.”
Overcoming Challenges and Building Success
Like any apprenticeship programme, Codem has faced its challenges, particularly around recruitment and ensuring training keeps pace with industry advancements. To raise awareness of career opportunities in composites, the company actively engages with local schools, colleges, and training providers.
“Recruitment is an ongoing focus, but we’ve addressed this by having a dedicated qualified assessor employed by Codem who supports and trains apprentices on-site,” Rochelle explains. “We also prioritise retention through a supportive work environment and clear career progression opportunities, ensuring apprentices feel valued throughout their development.”
The Impact of Apprentices: Driving Innovation and Productivity
Apprentices do more than just bring new faces to Codem Composites. They bring fresh ideas and innovative approaches that have enhanced productivity and driven continuous improvement across the business.
A Call to Action for Other Employers
Codem Composites strongly encourages other employers within the sector to embrace apprenticeships. As Rochelle puts it, “Apprenticeships are a strategic investment in the future of any business. We encourage other employers to embrace them and to collaborate closely with education providers. When training is tailored to industry needs, apprenticeships become a valuable asset that drives innovation and addresses critical skills shortages.”
Conclusion
By investing in apprenticeships, Codem Composites is not only securing its own future but also contributing to the sustained growth and innovation of the entire composites industry. Their commitment to nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals stands as a powerful example for businesses across the region to follow.

Future Forward: Investing in People, Place & Potential
The Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Stamford region stands at a pivotal moment. Amidst global economic uncertainties and shifting trade landscapes, the community and business network are uniquely positioned to navigate these challenges and actively build a future of sustained growth and success. This quarter, we delved into the vital areas of investing in our people, enhancing our places, and unlocking the vast potential that lies within our regional ecosystem.
New Regional Leadership: Mayor Paul Bristow
A key development for our region has been the recent mayoral election, which saw Paul Bristow (Conservative) elected as the new Mayor for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. This shift in leadership marks a new chapter, and the Chamber looks forward to working closely with Mayor Bristow and regional leaders to champion positive economic growth. His stated priorities include fast-tracking upgrades to key A-roads (A10, A47, A141), boosting train services, delivering the Fens Reservoir, building light rail in Cambridge and signal a strong focus on infrastructure and connectivity – areas critical for regional business development. We anticipate a proactive approach from the new Mayor in aligning the Cambridge & Peterborough Combined Authority's strategic priorities with his manifesto pledges, particularly in "getting Cambridgeshire and Peterborough moving."
Empowering People: Nurturing a Skilled Workforce
The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has sounded a clear warning: without urgent intervention, we risk a "lost generation" of young people disengaged from work and education. This resonates deeply within our region, where recruitment difficulties persist, especially for skilled technical roles. Three quarters of employers tell us that they are struggling to recruit - our recent Quarterly Economic
Survey (QES) highlights that 90 per cent of businesses claim labour costs are a significant pressure, and businesses are acutely aware of the need to address skills gaps.
However, the future is not bleak. Initiatives like the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) are actively bridging the gap between education and employment, ensuring young people gain the experience and exposure needed to thrive. The recent opening of new Science and Animal Care Facilities at the College of West Anglia's Cambridge Campus is a testament to this commitment. Furthermore, the Connect to Work programme, championed by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, offers vital support to individuals not presently active in the job market, particularly those with health conditions and disabilities, to enter and sustain employment. This collaborative approach, which focuses on empowering individuals through tailored support and connecting them with employers, is crucial for fostering an inclusive workforce that can meet the evolving demands of businesses. We encourage all members to engage with programmes like Connect to Work and to discover how initiatives like the Paid Internship Programme can support your growth goals - offering real value for employers while helping to develop future talent. Interested in getting involved? Our LSIP team would like to hear from you at LSIP@cambscci.co.uk.
Enhancing Our Places: Building Resilient Infrastructure
Investment in our physical environment is fundamental to unlocking regional potential. This quarter, two important projects saw this commitment: the Fens Reservoir and the Peterborough Station Quarter regeneration.
The UK Government's decision to grant nationally significant status to the Fens Reservoir is a game-changer. This pivotal project is not just about securing future water supply for one of the UK's fastest-growing regions; it's a powerful economic catalyst. Beyond providing essential resources for new homes and jobs, the reservoir is positioned to generate
significant opportunities for local businesses through its construction and ongoing operation.
The strong interest already demonstrated by 95 businesses at a briefing we held at the North Cambridgeshire Training Centre in Chatteris earlier this year highlights the anticipation for local supply chain engagement and skills development. Its role in environmental protection shows a commitment to sustainable development.
Equally transformative is the government's approval of the £65 million Peterborough Station Quarter regeneration project . This collaborative effort will revolutionise the station area into a vibrant location, enhancing connectivity and accessibility. With plans for a new western entrance, multistorey car park, refurbished existing buildings, and improved public spaces, the project is expected to create up to 4,000 jobs and 700 new homes
This investment is a clear signal of confidence in Peterborough's growth potential, attracting further investment and positioning the city as a more connected, sustainable, and dynamic hub.
Unlocking Potential: Navigating Global Challenges and Fostering Innovation
While regional news offers much to celebrate, the wider economic landscape presents ongoing challenges. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has cut UK growth forecasts, and businesses continue to face a "wall of higher domestic costs," including taxation, inflation, and rising labour, fuel, and utility expenses.
In this climate, agility and foresight are so important. The Chamber remains committed to pressing the government on these critical issues and supporting our members. Businesses are encouraged to review their export strategies and explore alternative markets, leveraging the expertise of our International Trade team. Furthermore, fostering innovation is crucial for boosting competitiveness and productivity. Our recent Sustainability Summit at DSM Group showcased the region's commitment to a greener future and demonstrated how sustainability is central to business success. A discussion with Professor Alan Taylor of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee also highlighted
the importance of understanding shifting economic tides. We always urge businesses to participate in the British Chambers of Commerce Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) to contribute to a clearer picture of today's economic climate. The Q3 QES will be released in September 2025. We’d love to hear your thoughts.
We must continue to support our businesses in accessing opportunities. The King’s Awards for Enterprise, the UK's highest honour for businesses is now open for applicants – this award offers a unique royal endorsement that can significantly boost brand, media presence, access to investment, and talent attraction. We encourage all eligible businesses to consider applying and showcasing their outstanding achievements. You can read more and apply by visiting the GOV.UK website or reaching out via email or telephone on: kingsawards@businessandtrade.gov.uk I 020 4551 0081.
Moving Forward, Together
The path to a positive future for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough lies in our collective ability to adapt, innovate, and collaborate. By strategically investing in our people through skills development and employment support, enhancing our places with vital infrastructure projects, and unlocking our full potential by navigating global challenges and embracing innovation, we can build a resilient, inclusive, and thriving regional economy. The new mayoral leadership, coupled with the ongoing dedication of our business community, provides a strong foundation for this exciting journey ahead. Let us continue to work together, united in our vision for a future-forward region.

Accessing New Markets: A Growth Story in Ghana
The growth estimate for UK in 2025 has been halved from two per cent to one per cent. With a flat domestic economy UK businesses are looking globally for growth.
The Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce is committed to fostering growth and innovation among our members, and we are proud to highlight a recent success story that exemplifies this mission.
GCE Hire Fleet, a leading provider of construction service products, sought to expand their business into new international markets, specifically targeting Western Africa and Ghana. As a member of the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce they were able to benefit from our comprehensive support and they have successfully navigated this complex landscape, opening doors to exciting opportunities.
“We're very proud to acknowledge the exceptional support and expertise provided by the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce during our recent international exploration trip into Ghana. As a UK-based business navigating a new and complex market, the Chamber’s guidance proved invaluable at every stage of the journey.”
Comprehensive Market Research
The journey began with thorough market research, a critical first step in understanding the dynamics of the Ghanaian market. Our research team immersed themselves in analysing consumer preferences, competitive landscapes, and regulatory environments. This invaluable information provided our member with insights into potential demand for their products and services, as well as an understanding of local cultural nuances that could impact their business strategies. By identifying key trends and potential challenges, we helped our member to tailor their approach to suit the unique characteristics of the Ghanaian market. This foundational work laid the groundwork for a successful market entry strategy.
Facilitating Connections with Potential Buyers
Understanding that personal relationships are vital in international business, we took proactive steps to facilitate connections with potential buyers in Ghana. Through our extensive network, we arranged meetings with key stakeholders in the region, allowing our member to engage directly with potential partners.
These meetings were essential not only for establishing rapport but also for gathering firsthand feedback on their offerings. Our member was able to present their products, discuss pricing, and gauge interest, all while benefiting from our guidance and expertise in navigating cultural and business etiquette.
On-the-Ground Support
To further bolster our GCE Hire Fleet's efforts, we organised a visit to Ghana, accompanying them every step of the way. This trip was a crucial component of the process, as it allowed our member to visit potential buyers' operations and gain a deeper understanding of their needs and expectations. These site visits provided invaluable insights into local business practices, enhancing our member's ability to align their offerings with market demands.
During the visit, we facilitated negotiations and discussions, ensuring that our member was wellprepared to address any questions or concerns from potential buyers. Our presence helped to instil confidence in the negotiations, as we acted as intermediaries, assisting with communication and fostering an atmosphere of collaboration.
Successful Negotiations and Future Prospects
The culmination of our efforts resulted in successful negotiations with several potential buyers, paving the way for our member to establish a foothold in the
Ghanaian market. The relationships formed during this process are expected to yield long-term partnerships, enhancing GCE Hire Fleet's growth and sustainability in the region.
As the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, we are thrilled to have played a pivotal role in this journey. Our commitment to supporting local businesses in their international endeavours remains steadfast, and we look forward to continuing to assist businesses across our region in exploring new markets and opportunities.
The experience in Ghana serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, research, and dedicated support in achieving international success. We are excited to see how our member's venture in Ghana unfolds and are optimistic about the positive impact it will have on their business and the broader

Unlocking the Potential of LinkedIn Company Pages
Are LinkedIn company pages a brilliant marketing tool - or just another distraction?
Think of it like a website home page
• Post and engage as your business: Share content and like, follow and comment under your company name to build a professional digital footprint and broaden your presence.
• Grow your audience: You can invite 250 personal connections to follow your company page each month. By having multiple page admins, you can tap into everyone’s network to amplify your reach.
• Attract Talent: Showcase your business as a great place to work. One that current employees feel great about and prospective employees want to join.
• Cross-promote: Link to and from your page on your website, email newsletters and other marketing activities to create multiple touchpoints with your audience.
• Double your reach: Sharing content on both your company page and personal profile boosts visibility. What should you share?
Avoid being too salesy. Instead, show behind-thescenes posts, team stories or light-hearted moments that reflect your culture.
LinkedIn is a professional space – but that doesn’t mean it has to be dull! Take a look at Monzo Bank, a great example of a company demonstrating its personality on LinkedIn.
The key to success? Consistency!
Success Story: Round Table Great Britain and Ireland
Round Table wanted to reach more men aged 18 to 45 through tailored LinkedIn content. One simple post - a UK map showing all the local clubs - wasn’t flashy, but it landed perfectly. The message was clear and relatable: ‘there’s something happening near you.’ It helped drive real membership enquiries.
That’s the power of a good company page. Forget chasing likes and comments – it’s about connecting with the right people, consistently.

Cambridgeshire Bus Operator Is Shortlisted For Two National Awards
Stagecoach East is celebrating being named as Finalists for two prestigious awards for its performance and its work in helping to tackle violence against women and girls locally.
The local bus operator has been shortlisted for the National Transport Awards in the categories for Bus Operator of the Year and Best Alliance/Collaboration of the Year. The National Transport Awards are one of the most important awards schemes in the transport industry, being independently judged by senior figures within the industry.
The shortlisting’s are based on the performance of Stagecoach East, which has become a modern and reliable service, and also on Buses and Businesses Against Abuse (BAA), a unique partnership between Stagecoach East, the Cambridgeshire Constabulary (CC), and the Cambridge and Peterborough Rape Crisis Centre (CPRCC), to tackle Violence Against Women and Girls throughout Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and wherever Stagecoach East buses run.
Darren Roe, Managing Director of Stagecoach East, said: “We thoroughly believe in the need to plan for the future, and to be shortlisted for Bus Operator of the Year is a real testament to that. We have been meticulously working to our plans to deliver a modern bus service, ready for the future of our dynamic region.
“For BAA, alongside our outstanding partners, CC and the CPRCC, our team have worked extremely hard to make a real difference to the lives of women and girls locally. All our new drivers are trained in the scheme, and all our existing drivers are receiving annual training. We now have many examples of where that training has been put into practice, and we are proud to be able to say that our buses are safe-spaces for everyone.”
From curious kids to careerready adults: why now is the time to upskill at NCTC
Over 200 primary school children from seven local schools were welcomed to the North Cambridgeshire Training Centre (NCTC) in June as part of an inspiring “Skills Escalator Day” - an event designed to open young minds to the world of work.
Hosted by Eastern Education Group, the event brought together pupils from Kingsfield, Mepal and Witcham, Benwick, Cromwell, Glebelands, Lionel Walden, and Thomas Eaton schools. It marked the third consecutive year the Skills Escalator initiative has been delivered in Chatteris, with the wider programme reaching over 5,000 children across the region to date.
Organisations including Cambridgeshire Constabulary, G’s Fresh, HSBC, Metalcraft, MJS Construction, and the Royal Air Force ran interactive sessions designed to spark curiosity and ambition in children as young as six.
Victoria Fiebelkorn, Group Head of the Skills Escalator for Eastern Education Group, said: “Careers education in early primary school is very important; by the time a child is eight years old, they often have fixed views about what they can and can’t do. Skills Escalator Days allow them to speak to real professionals and imagine possibilities they might never have considered.”
Megan Doyle, a teacher at Glebelands Primary School, said: “This is my first experience of a Skills Escalator Day. The children really enjoyed themselves.”
Seven-year-old Maya added: “I met the bank and the police. I’ve had a good time. It’s been interesting,” while six-year-old
Oliver said, “I enjoyed working with G’s Fresh. Today has been amazing.”
While the kids got a taste of the future, adults have a chance to shape theirs right now.
As the new academic year approaches, NCTC, based in Chatteris, is encouraging adults and employers alike to invest in training and development, not just for the next generation, but for the workforce of today.
From September 2025, NCTC will launch a wide range of fully funded and commercial adult learning programmes, including:
• Functional Skills in Maths and English (Entry Level to Level 2)
• English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
• Computing and Digital Skills (Up to Level 3)

“I first joined the Chamber in 2003 when I started my first business and very quickly realised how valuable it was to my business. The various networking events were great in making new contacts, finding customers and suppliers. The connections played a big part in growing my business.
My involvement continued to grow by initially becoming a member of one of the committees and it evolved to me joining the Chamber board and chairing two committees for over five years. As you will appreciate the relationship and involvement had a very positive impact on my business.
I would highly recommend joining the Chamber and finding out what it can do for your business..”

Planning permission granted for cancer support centre in grounds of Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge
Planning permission for a new Maggie's centre in Cambridge has been granted. The new centre will provide expert support for people with cancer as well as their family and friends.
It will replace the current interim centre which has been supporting people from a converted residential building elsewhere on the hospital site since 2012.
It is expected the centre will be open to support people living with cancer by 2028.
Dame Laura Lee DBE, our Chief Executive, said:
We are delighted to have planning permission to build our new purpose-built Maggie’s in Cambridge. We have worked closely with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for many years to ensure people with cancer across the Cambridgeshire area, as well as their loved ones, have had free expert support at our interim centre. It is wonderful to now be a step closer to building a centre designed with people living with cancer in mind.
Improving physical, mental health and wellbeing
The new centre will be designed by Níall McLaughlin Architects and will include:
• a warm and welcoming kitchen area
• a winter garden
• rooms for one-to-one support
• larger spaces for groups, exercise classes and more
The design of the centre aims to engage with the existing woodland as much as possible, but the proposals will also feature a garden designed by Tom Stuart-Smith.
We believe that gardens and outdoor spaces play a vital role in improving physical and mental health and wellbeing.
In 2024 the centre supported people nearly 10,000 times. It is anticipated that the new centre could potentially triple those figures.
The new centre will be built near Bright Horizons Day Nursery and Preschool, off Robinson Way.
Lisa Punt, Centre Head of Maggie’s Cambridge, said: I am delighted planning permission has been approved for our new purpose-built centre. We have supported a lot of people
from our former hospital staff residences, but it will be brilliant to have more room to offer a larger programme of support and reach more people living with cancer. To have a garden where people can simply sit and decompress will be a wonderful addition.
Níall McLaughlin, said:
It is wonderful to receive the news of the approved planning permission for the new Maggie's Centre in Cambridge. This exceptional organisation deserves a thoughtfully designed and inspirational setting, and we believe that the proposed building and landscape will do much to complement the care and support provided by the centre's remarkable staff. We are honoured to be a part of the team helping Maggie's to deliver their vision.
Dr Hugo Ford, Director of Cancer Services at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, added: We are absolutely delighted to learn of Maggie’s wonderful news, and would like to wish them every success with the new centre, and thank them for the years of fantastic support they have given this Trust and our patients. We know that Maggie’s makes a huge contribution to our patients’ wellbeing, and this new centre will enable them to enhance the care they give even further.
We're here with you
In the meantime, people across the Cambridgeshire area can still benefit from Maggie’s support:
• At our interim centre – in Cambridge
• At home – over the phone or email.
• Online: you can also join online courses and workshops run by our other centres across the UK. Our cancer support specialists will talk you through what's right for you

Equal Pay for Equal Work: What You Need To Know
Do employees have the right to equal pay for equal work? In this day and age, the answer might seem straightforward – of course, employees are entitled to equal pay for equal work. However, despite widespread awareness of this core principle, many large businesses still fall short of compliance, exposing themselves to significant legal risks, potential damages, and reputational harm from public scrutiny.
Let’s examine a recent case where this occurred, understand what went wrong, and explore how you can ensure compliance while protecting your business’ interests…
Do Employees have the Right to Equal Pay for Equal Work?
Yes - employees do have the right to equal pay for equal work. The Supreme Court’s decision in the landmark Asda Stores v Brierley case confirmed that
employees are entitled to equal pay for work of equal value if certain conditions are met. Specifically, workers must be on substantially the same terms as those in different roles unless any differences can be objectively justified by material factors on a non-discriminatory basis.
Building on this precedent, a recent Employment Tribunal decision found that Next had engaged in sex discrimination. The retail giant paid its sales consultants - most of whom were women, lower hourly rates than their warehouse operatives, who were primarily men. The Tribunal rejected Next’s argument that the pay disparity was justified by higher market rates for warehouse work. This ruling potentially opens the door for over 3,500 current and former Next employees to file equal pay claims.
What Should Employers Do to Ensure Compliance?
To ensure compliance with the Equality Act 2010, employers should conduct an equal pay audit. This helps verify that your pay structures are fair, transparent and aligned with legal requirements, which mandate that men and women be paid equally for work that is the same, similar, equivalent or of equal value. The latter can apply even if the work isn’t identical, but is comparable in terms of effort, skill, and decisionmaking.
It’s important to note that potential claims for unequal pay can go back up to six years after an employee leaves the company, so taking proactive steps now could prevent costly legal issues in the future. For further assistance with this matter, please don’t hesitate to contact our HR/Legal Advice Line Team for FREE on 01455 852 028, where a team of experts can assist with your individual needs.
