UPDATE: By a 6-2 v ote, th e B o ar d o f Trustees on June 1 passed a resolution that calls on the Office of Legal Counsel to seek dismissal and/or vigorously defend the Tribes against a lawsuit filed by Secretary David Close. The BOT met in a closed session to discuss the matter and then came back into open session to vote on the resolution. That open session was supposed to be public,but no announcement was made to notify the public, including staff that the open session was underway. Voting in favor of the resolution was General Council Chairman Alan Crawford, BOT

Tribal leaders ask Pope to revoke 'Doctrine of Discovery' David Close, a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, shakes hands with Pope Francis in the Vatican City on May 4. Close was among 11indigenous delegates who met with the Pope in an effort to persuade the Vatican to revoke two papal bulls, which are the "blue print" used to dominate and dehumanize and, therefore, deny the rights of Native Americans. The papal bulls were decreed in the 15th century but have been used as late as 2005 against the Oneida tribe. Close went to Rome as an individual and did notrepresent the CTUIR Board of Trustees. Along with Yakama Chairman Jodee Goudy and nine other leaders, from Canada and South America in part of what's being called the "Long March to Rome."
