1. vision Globally Geordie The Whey Aye Observation Wheel celebrates Newcastle’s continued and momentous transformation of the Tyneside river corridor for public enjoyment.

Landmarked by the tallest observation structure in Europe, the 33,000 sq.m promenade is designed to tell the amazing story of the North. The mixed use leisure/food/retail and entertainment development embraces a passion for “experience”, immersing visitors deep into the hearts, heights, and horizons of Newcastle.

The newest trends and technology from the museums, attractions, and lifestyle retail sectors are harnessed to the fullest - bringing the incredible Whey Aye to the world – no bollocks!

GIANTS ON THE QUAYSIDE NEWCASTLE CONCEPT i DEC. 2018

Building Form and Materiality Building form and materiality celebrate the Spillers site heritage and broader Tyne side context. The architectural forms play with visions of spiral grain chutes, angular bins, conveyors and bridges, all collaged in a playful promenade composition leading towards the Whey Aye Wheel.

The angulated rooflines and facades evoke a sense of old wheat bins, in a very abstract and contemporary way.

The materials draw on the heritage of the site, morphing reused brick, oxidized steel and distressed concrete surfaces in fresh and unusual ways. These rich textures and tones evoke a strong sense of comfort and context. Perorated metal sheets, meshes and faรงade punctures create layers, depth, and views into and out of buildings.

Al fresco food and beer terraces spill out from the upper levels. Factory train tracks, railway sleepers, cranes, crates and mill wheels punctuate the promenade.

MASTER PLAN The master plan organizes the way the site attracts and handles people. Effective space planning ensures a smooth visitor experience, putting safety, comfort and enjoyment as lead objectives. Operational flow from arrival to departure are defined, spaces planned and located to ensure success.

Parking, admissions, cyclist and walker requirements, holding and rest areas, active and passive leisure zones, q-lines, preshows, rest/first aid zones, service delivery/access, restaurants/retail, washrooms, baby and toddler facilities, temporary stages and events, and more, have all undergone rigorous study within the optimized plan.

The Why Aye Master Plan is divided into 3 main zones: 1. Wheel Terminus 2. The Bins – Restaurant Buildings and Promenade 3. Fun Warehouse – Indoor Family Entertainment Center

THE WHEEL TERMINUS Inspired by the spirit of the Spillers site, and Newcastle’s proud industrial heritage, visitors are immersed into a cool, chic industrial “Terminus” which celebrates the structure, functionality and mass of the Whey Aye Wheel.

The evocative layered façade uses semi transparent, (perforated metal) surfaces to add depth, and play with lighting and views in unusual ways. The legs of the great Wheel are expressed and celebrated – visitors are in no doubt what this building is about.

Levels 1 and 2 are designed for pubic use, and considered to be outside the controlled Attraction Zone. Levels 3-5 are controlled and accessible only to paying or admitted visitors. 3 types of Vertical transportation facilitate the journey up and down from the Wheel Loading Platform

Slider Landing Location

GROUND LEVEL Ground Floor Ticket Purchase In the central ground public space with minor Q line, ropes in front. Visitors can also buy online with smartphones. All ticketing has time slots.

When it is not busy, you are simply asked – would you like to go now? The pressure on the Q Lines is greatly reduced/solved by the time slot and on-line buying technique.

Public F&B/Retail Visitors can relax in the G and L2 level F&B/shops until their time slot. The Ground Level F&B is a family fast food/restaurant style with indoor seating and riverside terrace.

Since the restaurants/shops and other commercial areas should be exposed to public, they are organized around the first 2 levels. Escalators and public lifts give public access to these first 2 floors. No public can get above 2nd without a ticket. Washrooms are also located nearby on the first 2 floors, with smaller versions on higher levels.

Rollglider Londing Platform

LEVEL 1

Attraction Entrance Check Point A main entrance control point is located before entering the vertical Pre-Show. Tickets are checked and only ticket holders move beyond. You are now inside the Attraction Zone and begin an exciting Preshow journey.

A semi transparent digital media mesh follows the escalator journey up and conveys a powerful storyline of “Wheels of the World� from Mills, to Cycles, to Observatories!

F&B/Retail The Level 2 F&B is a Licensed Family Restaurant with local/craft beer, indoor /outdoor al fresco terraces. Food Service Lifts allow it to serve up into the VIP Lounge above.

All exiting attraction visitors will exit through the souvenir gift shop and be dispersed back into the L2 F&B zone.

Escalators and lifts provide the final exit back to Level 1.

LEVEL 2 Snack Bar

Visitors arrive at L2 and enter an enclosed bar. It is able to hold large quantities of people at peak, or flow small groups through rapidly at non peak times.

Visitors are then channeled up the escalator Passage to the Wheel Loading Platform on Level 4. The people flow is synched with the wheel capacity by controlled rate of release from the holding room.

The LED media mesh wall continues the storyline, more powerfully and dramatically as visitors move up the escalators towards the Wheel Experience.

Rollglider Loading Platform

LEVEL 3

Special VIP and Group Lounge The VIP Lounge has private seating areas, food and beverage service from the restaurants below and direct lift access to the Whey Aye Wheel. There is a private outdoor terrace for celebrities such as Alan Shearer to interact with and be seen by guests below.

LEVEL 4

Wheel Loading/Unloading Zone/Bar A rooftop Indoor area is designed to directly load and unload people. There is a bar/snacks zone located so visitors can stay longer, buy drinks/snacks and take repeat wheel rides when capacity allows. On exit people are funneled back down separate escalators, to L3, channeled through the souvenir/photo shop and released back down escalators into the public areas of the 2nd floor F&B zone.

TERMINUS INTERIOR Chic Industrial Look and Feel

The interior architecture transforms mill like features into contemporary transporters – escalators become an incredible, pre show journey, bridges, lifts and platforms all become cool expressions of steel and industrial technology.

The day lit atrium is designed to let visitors “feel the wheel”. The gigantic revolutions, shadows, and light will wash the space creating visual drama.

ESCALATORS/PRESHOW MEDIA MESH The Terminus is designed using a multi storied, vertical courtyard format seducing visitors with light and space, and inviting spectacular views up to the wheel and out to the river and city.

An iconic wall of escalators forms the backdrop of the Terminus, reaching high above the ticket/admissions counter towards the wheel above.

The vast open style ground floor takes on the character of a funky industrial hub, about to launch you on a “life bucket list� experience high above Newcastle.

INTERIOR MATERIALITY The materiality of the wheel interiors will echo those of the exterior, focusing on used local bricks, stone floors and industrial black metal work.

A giant LED screen curtain will provide a pre-show display of moving imagery focused both on local culture and event promotion.

The overall sense of theatre will be enhanced by the imaginative faรงade designs of the carefully selected f &b and retail tenants.

FUN WAREHOUSE Fun Warehouse is an indoor Family Entertainment Center dedicated to physical/active play. It will host state of the art sport, gaming and adventure climbing/rope course and trampoline activities within it’s vast open plan and spacious 12 m ceiling height. It can be accessed directly from the main road, as well as the Whey Aye Wheel Terminus and Quayside promenade.

The roof of the building will comprise multi purpose sports pitches for Futsal, Tennis and other sports. The roof area has magnificent views to and from the Whey Aye Wheel, and the river Tyne. It will have retractable tensile shade and rain canopies, and retractable/temporary grand stands for special events.

THE BINS The Bins comprise 3 different buildings arranged along the Quayside. They create a vibrant F&B backdrop to a riverside promenade connecting the parking area to the Whey Aye Wheel and Fun Warehouse buildings. Each of the buildings are 2 levels, include al fresco terraces at both ground and 2nd story, have independent service access for the main road behind and can be flexibly subdivided for 1 or multiple tenants. Covered roof terraces are provided on each bin.

GIANT OF THE NORTH The amazing, animated Giant of the North Sculpture forms a landmark Gateway at the promenade entrance from the car and bike park. Visitors experience the awesome sound, light and movement as the giant periodically comes to life. He raises his arms with an iconic Geordie gesture and beams magical laser messages and images interacting with the Whey Aye Wheel.
