in a way to impress your guests hen you invite guests to come to your home to share a meal with you, setting an attractive table is as important as serving good food. Your table setting is the first thing that your guests will see and can actually influence their appetites. This is why you should chose your setting carefully, based on whether the dinner is to be casual or elegant. If you are having a formal dinner, then using a cream colored, linen tablecloth with matching cloth napkins is great for this type of dinner. You an accent it with a crystal or gold vase filled with flowers. Be sure to use a low vase, so that your guests’ views of each other will not be blocked and you can use a large one for the center of the table and two small matching ones at the end. Candles also add a touch of elegance. Instead of using typical candle holders, considering using votives that you can set in bowls of water. Floating scented candles are another way to add grace and elegance to your table. If you prefer a modern type of elegance, then forget about using your grandmother’s china and purchase some of the newer dinnerware that uses colorful geometric shapes.

Consider peach cobbler or a chocolate layer cake. Always have a sugar free alternative in case one of your guests can not eat food that contains sugar. Be attentive to your guests and engage them in conversation. Make them laugh and they will appreciate you even more.

If you are having a casual dinner, then consider using brightly colored tablecloths and napkins. They add festiveness to the table and can be complimented with floral arrangements that match the colors that you use. You can buy utensils that have colored stems and glasses in colors to match. There are many casual place mats that are attractive and affordable. They will not only add a since of style to your place setting but will protect your table cloth as well. Themed dinners such as those served at holiday time, can be especially fun to decorate for. There is lots of dinnerware and utensils that have holiday themes and you can even band miniature Christmas tree ornaments together to make attractive compliments to your table. Red and gold are great colors to use for these dinners and don’t forget to break out the punch bowl for eggnog. If wine is going to be served, use crystal stemware. How you serve the food is also important. You should have pitchers of water at each end of the table and serve the appetizers first. Once they have been eaten, clear the table to make room for the main dishes. Replace soiled napkins and refill the water pitchers.

There are many factors you have to keep in mind when considering the designs and the outlay of your house. By following some simple and basic design principles, you can create an atmosphere in your home that oozes personality, creativity and a cozy feel as well. You can even visit some show homes if you want to get a better idea of what to do and what not to do. So, here are some basic designs to make your home feel more modern and comfortable. 1. BALANCE OUT YOUR ROOM It is very important that you balance out your room in the best manner possible. Balance in a room indicates the visual distribution of items in it. You can create a balance by having a pair of objects on either side of the room or at least make sure the items are of equal height, weight or size. A pair of floor lamps on either side of the bed is a good example of this. Make sure that one side of your room isn’t cluttered and the other empty. Move things around until you get the right combination. 2. BRING HARMONY INTO YOUR ROOM Make sure that everything you include in your room looks like it has fit into a certain mould. Yes, you could definitely have a piece or two of eclectic nature, but creating a unified environment ensures that the whole room comes together. You can do this by having a particular common color, texture, theme or even style running throughout the room, as well the entire house. 3. REPEAT SOME ELEMENTS By this I mean you could repeat some element or style throughout the entire house. For example, a pattern on the wall, wallpaper, a certain color, etc. This generally ensures that your home has great rhythm and flow throughout.

6. STICK TO THE PROPORTIONS One of the easiest ways to make a room look like an overkill is to stuff it with objects that are not in proportion with its size. Ask yourself, is the bed too big for the room? Is the sofa looking too stuffy and cramping the space? Is the painting or the light fixture too large for the wall? Once changed, all these things will transform your room and won’t look awkward anymore. 7. PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS

4. FOCAL POINT A great way to add some fun and pizzazz to a room or an area of the house is to create a focal point. You can do this by adding a water feature in the living room or even out on the patio. A fireplace would probably be one of the most popular options, or a great custom staircase that sets the stage as you enter your home.

The details are everything. Some things might be very small and you might think that it does not warrant your attention, but that is not so, as these things are some of the most important. So, you should pay attention to things like cabinet hardware, door knobs, lampshades, etc. It is these small details that make an ordinary room and home and transform into modern and contemporary homes that reflect luxury as well. E-mail your design questions and photos to designers@kohon.ca or visit our website at www.kohon.ca.

5. INCORPORATE VARIETY By this I mean you should experiment with some fantastic artwork, vases, etc. You can even experiment with bold colored sofas or even bright cushions, or a contrasting throw over the sofa. Try experimenting with a vase containing the same colored flowers; it has quite a stunning effect. These days we have all the options to build our custom homes to suit our style and living.

Eco Home 5 Ways to Green Your Home

Everyone is buzzing about going green these days and the home is one of the best places to start. Since we spend so much time within our homes, it just makes sense to start being more eco-friendly there. Here, we’ll look at five ways you and your family can start going green with an eco home.

1. Clean green. The majority of commercial cleaners that you find on supermarket shelves are full of toxins and nasty chemicals that may leave your home shiny but can wreak havoc on your lungs and skin, not to mention they are very toxic to small children and pets. Instead of reaching for that bright blue window cleaner next time, why not try vinegar and water to leave your windows sparkling clean. Vinegar is an excellent cleanser and when mixed with baking soda, it also works as a natural abrasive. And, if you prefer something a little more commercial, there are many eco-friendly cleaners on the market these days, as well. 2. Start conserving water. You don’t have to remodel your

bathroom to use less water. Going green is as easy as installing new shower heads that use less water, taking showers instead of baths and washing dishes in a sink full of water rather than running the faucet continually. A special dam can be dropped into your toilet tank to reduce the amount of water used with each flush, making your house an eco home.

3. Change your lights. There are two ways to go here in order to

reduce the amount of electricity that you use in your home. The first is to replace all ceiling lights with fluorescent bulbs. These are now avail-

able in warm light, so you won’t even miss the softer yellow look of tungsten, yet the amount of energy saved is definitely going to make a difference in your electric bill. The other way to save more money and energy is to use LED lights in your lamps. These don’t work as well for overhead lights, but they are very bright and ideal for more concentrated illumination and cost pennies a year to run.

4. Switch to glass and metal. When it comes to the kitchen, you’ll find a lot of waste here. Rather than use plastics and other similar compounds that could be leaching chemicals into your food or that are disposable, opt for glass and metal containers. They are easier to clean, can be re-used and if you choose the right kind, you’ll be able to use them in the freezer or in the oven. The best part? You won’t be contributing to the landfill problem with plastic bags and disposable containers. 5. Use eco home furnishings. By choosing to buy items for your

home that are made out of materials that are easily replenished, you are contributing to a more eco-friendly world. Teak, oak and other fine woods take many, many years to grow, but materials like cork and bamboo, while still stylish, can be replaced rapidly. Choosing bamboo chairs and organic cotton or flax fabrics to cover your furniture is a great way to start going green.

About the Author: Written by Kate Hobbs Having an eco home doesn’t require building a green house right from the start. You can literally take any home and start going green with just a few steps. Making environmentally conscious choices when you do your shopping, whether for groceries or furnishings, will make a difference in the long run. Choose the Best Decorative For Your Door to Create a More Dramatic Entrance The main entrance door of the house will speak for the entire style and fashion sense of the home owner.

It can be designated as the host, as people will either admire or criticize the house according to varying impressions. The security of the house dwellers depend upon the durability and refinery of the main entrance door. It is important to secure a protective lock for the door as well as choose first-class quality materials to be used for fabrication of the entry area. In addition, the main entrance door will point as the central key of the house. As a safe entrance for everyone, it is necessary to put up either a durable wood or a fiberglass door. If the house is quite big for the entire family, a door is like a security guard who can protect everyone else even on a dark, silent night. The thief cannot easily barge in if it is secured with a lock. A wood door will surely be a superior choice in this instance especially if the house is situated on a mountainous area or a very secluded subdivision. A house with a protected door will give privacy to the occupants especially for working people who live in an apartment in a highly urbanized city. There are a lot of reported violent cases that are seemingly similar to news brought out in the newspaper tabloids and television reports. Some of the reasons include the unsafe security house locks. In order to avoid instances like this, the occupants must see to it that a bolt is attached to the door. On the other hand, a fiberglass door entrance can also be chic and stylistic especially for those who wanted to design their homes and give instant displays of their home decorations without exposing them to the crashers. However, most glass doors are

Page 12

only put up if the residence has security guards in the gate of the house. Glass doors are most preferable by popular interior designers and famous celebrities who wish to showcase their expensive condominium unit or town house. However, for ordinary people who simply wish to have a decent life, free from all hassles, a wood crafted door will be necessarily enough. A door should serve as an inviting host to the guests who is willing to convince them to come inside. Main entrance doors are usually tasked with functional accessories such as a doorbell that will serve as a knocker to announce that there are visitors waiting. Another accessory is the wind chime which will also signal that as the door is banged open and when a sound is produced, the house owner will take notice of the people coming in. Other accessories will include good fortunes and lucky charms such as hanging of religious pictures, family name of the household dwellers, number of the house and special decorations for Christmas, New Year’s Day, Valentines Day and etc. Most antique doors which have well-crafted designs can be purchased from antique shops while some modern ready-to-install doors can also be bought in hardware stores. The buyer will only have to choose from an array of designs. About the Authr: Written by Richard Dinae Article source: http://www.isnare.com/?ai d=359935&ca=Home+Management

(NC)-True, the frigid weather of winter is still on the horizon, but winter savvy Canadians know it’s time to start getting the house, indoors and out, ready for winter. Shortly, Canadians will start putting away the patio furniture, retiring the lawn mower and dusting off the snow blower. Some of us might even run the furnace now just to see if it starts up, rather than finding out it’s on the fritz when it’s actually needed - a smart step, according to Dave Walton of Direct Energy. Walton has a few more tips for homeowners that can keep the house warm and save energy during the winter: • Install a programmable thermostat that will automatically adjust your home’s temperature settings. Programming the thermostat a degree or two lower when no one is home can help save up to 10 per cent on annual heating bills. • Check your furnace filters for blockages. To increase the efficiency of your furnace, replace your filter every three to four months. • Inspect your registers and radiators to ensure they are free from anything that could restrict air circulation, such as rugs, furniture and drapes. • Keep accumulated heat from escaping the house by closing curtains in the evening. More information can be found online at www.directenergy.com or toll-free at 1-888-334-8221. - News Canada

Refrigerator Cookie Recipes

I remember getting excited whenever we would get a box of Velveeta because that meant we would be getting one of mom’s refrigerator cookie recipes. She would always put the refrigerator cookies in the Velveeta boxes in the refrigerator. Probably a use for those boxes that we would never even think of today. It, of course, makes the cookies square, which allows for easier packing into containers. It also means that you do not have to mess with trying to get the cookies into a perfect roll. Also no danger of the kids putting something on top of the cookies and smashing them. I always liked coconut so the oatmeal refrigerator cookie recipe was one of my favorites. Oatmeal Refrigerator Cookies • 1 cup shortening • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup brown sugar, packed • 2 beaten eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1 1/2 cups sifted flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 teaspoon salt • 3 cups oatmeal • 1/2 cup nuts • 1/2 cup coconut Cream together the sugars and the shortening in a large bowl. Add the eggs and vanilla to the creamed mixture. Sift the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, and salt) into the creamed mixture. Mix in the oatmeal, nuts, and coconut. Put wax paper or plastic wrap into Velveeta boxes and push the cookie mixture into the boxes. Refrigerate the cookies overnight. The next day take the refrigerator cookies out and slice them (about 1/8 inch thick). Then place the cookies on cookie sheets and bake in a 375 degree oven for 10 minutes.

Page 20

Peanut Butter Refrigerator Cookies • 1/2 cup peanut butter • 1/2 cup butter, softened • 1 cup brown sugar • 1 egg • 1 3/4 cup flour • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 cup evaporated milk Mix together the butter and peanut butter in a large bowl. Add the brown sugar to this mixture. Add in the egg and mix well. Alternate adding the dry ingredients (flour, salt, and baking soda) with the evaporated milk. If you work outside of the home, this is a great cookie recipe to throw together on Friday night. Then you can have a fun time baking the cookies with your kids on Saturday. PORTOBELLO MUSHROOM WITH SAUSAGE Serves: 6

• 6 large portobello mushrooms, stems removed • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 pound Italian sausage, casings removed • 1/2 cup prepared marinara sauce • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, grated • Preheat barbecue on MEDIUM. • Wipe the outside of the mushrooms with a damp cloth. Using a teaspoon, scrape out some of the black “gills” on the underside of the mushrooms. Brush the mushrooms lightly on both sides with olive oil. • Crumble sausage in a small skillet and cook over medium heat (on your side burner if you have one) until it is lightly browned. Drain off any excess fat. • Place the mushrooms, gill side down on the cooking grids. Grill for 2-3 minutes until some of the juices are released. Turn and sprinkle with sausage, marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. • Continue grilling for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the mushroom is tender.

If the potatoes are larger than bite sized, cut them into halves or quarters as appropriate. Set aside. • Blanch the asparagus on the side burner, plunge into ice water, then drain on paper towel lined wire racks. Set aside. • Preheat the barbecue on HIGH, and place red peppers on grids. Char on all sides, then remove from the heat. Place the peppers in a paper bag to cool, then slip off the charred skins; seed and chop. • Grill the lamb on HIGH for 2-3 minutes per side. Cool, then slice. • To make the dressing, place the yolks, garlic, and lime juice in a blender, or in the bowl of a food processor. With the motor running, add the oils in a thin stream. Add the chopped mint leaves. Season with salt and pepper if desired. • Toss the lamb, potatoes, peppers and blanched asparagus with the dressing, and garnish with fresh chives.

Wine And Cheese Parties Are Positively Delicious!

If there is one thing we all love I think we can all agree it would be food. In many cultures around the world food is a very important aspect of life with special occasions and food intertwined with each other. Food is a social and fundamental part of society. Face it going to dinner with a friend is much more fun than eating dinner alone. Perhaps that is why dinner parties are such a genius idea, the notion of a group of people getting together to share a meal as well as stimulating conversation while sipping a glorious wine is nothing short of sublime. Putting together such a gathering of companions does not need to be a daunting task, which often seems to be one of the main reasons many people do not host as many soirees as they would like. A much more simple wine and cheese party can give the same jovial atmosphere as a dinner party with less work, less expense and above all less stress on the host or hostess. Not much is required for having a wine and cheese party compared to holding a dinner party. Decor can be relatively simple and often works best as such. Fancy plates and glasses are not obligatory either. While it is important to make sure that you have proper wine glasses, do not go out and buy glasses just for the occasion. As stated in an earlier article, Essential Wine Accessories, red wines tend to be served in a larger bowl style glass than whites because of their bigger bouquets, but many wine glass companies nowadays manufacture a more universal wine glass which is suitable for both reds and whites. Don’t feel obliged to buy red wine glasses if you only drink white and vice versa because if you would only get use out of them occasionally when you had an event like a wine and cheese party it is not worth the expense. Plates are much the same as wine glasses. If you do not plan on throwing many events it is not worth the expensive of going out and purchasing small serving or even mingling plates. Mingling plates are special plates that have a hole in one side to side in a wine

Page 22

glass so that while a person is eating and drinking they do not have to worry about balancing their glass or setting it down somewhere. Instead you can opt for a much less expensive yet still fashionable idea of cocktail napkins. Go down to your local party supply store and pick up a variety of small cocktail napkins in different colors and patterns. Using a variety of cocktail napkins not only is less expensive but also means you can better color or theme coordinate if you are having a themed wine and cheese party. The most important part of a wine and cheese night is of course the wine and cheese! It is important to pair the two as best as possible, even if neither you nor your guests are sommeliers. Wine and cheese from the same regions tend to go very well together, but this does not mean you have to serve a French wine with a French cheese. Some of the most basic and most popular pairings for wine and cheese are: Brie with Merlot, Champagne or a Sweet Sherry Camembert with Chenin Blanc or Cabernet Sharp Cheddar with Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc or Rioja Cream Cheese with White Zinfandel Muenster with Beaujolais or Zinfandel Roquefort with Tawny Port Swiss with Gewurztraminer So as you can see having a wine and cheese party is very simple, inexpensive and just as enjoyable as a full on dinner party! Don’t stress if you don’t have the right sort of glasses or plates, the wine and cheese party is meant to be a stress free social event with friends and loved ones. Every sweet tooth who loves chocolate fudge will also love the mixtures and combinations creative minds can come up with and put on the plate.

Making It Over The avid sweet tooth will love the new sweet treat in chocolate fudge. It has, in the past few years, been given a sinfully delicious makeover. You can search around the internet and have these new creations sent directly to your door; no fuss, no muss. Do not let yourself be tied down to just the ordinary type of chocolate fudge flavor. Let your free spirit fly and go for something extra. The normal rich, smooth chocolate fudge you are used to contains ingredients like powdered sugar, cocoa, and butter. With these few ingredients, the result is a sweet concoction of smooth melt in your mouth goodness. Fill It Up Besides the plan variety of fudge, there are mixes and flavors you probably have not tried yet. You can explore the world of white chocolate, organic chocolate, and even a swirl of two or three chocolate flavors together. Along with the basics, the addition of toppings and filling ingredients

give you the personal treat you are looking for in fudge. Some special and famous chocolate fudge fillers involve food ingredients such as various nut varieties, chunks of rich chocolate, sweet candy, peanut butter, cream cheese, and even fruit if you like. The nut varieties include almonds, peanuts, roasted pecans, and others. Unique Versions There are some varieties of fudge that might not be to everyone’s liking. They are a little unique in their taste and are strictly personally created for the individual taster. A normal chocolate connoisseur might consider coconut and nuts normal in their chocolate fudge concoction but cranberries and orange slices might be stretching it a bit. These seem to be a very nice taste when added to the fudge and its rich taste. Do not be afraid to experiment with your chocolate fudge, you might be the creative genius that comes up with the all time favorite desert. Making It Yours Chocolate can be as simple as a small square you pop in your mouth or a piece loaded with anything you can find to add to it. No matter what you decide to do with your fudge, make sure you go online and order enough to share with all of your friends. Just because you like it so much does not mean you have to be stingy with the greatest chocolate confection ever created. Chocolate fudge, the rich creamy wonder food of the ages! A New Kind of Love…for Salad

(NC)—A star is born. Your family will love this hearty salad with its traditional French ingredients of frisée and haricots verts, dressed with Newman’s Own all-natural balsamic vinaigrette. Like all of Paul Newman’s classics, this movie-themed salad combines great taste and a compelling story: all the royalties and profits from the sale of his food products are donated to charity via the Newman’s Own Foundation. To date, Paul Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation have donated more than $265 million to charities in the U.S.,Canada and around the world.

Preparation 1. Tear frisée into bite-size pieces and put in a large bowl. Set aside. 2. Cut bacon slices crosswise into 1/4 inch (5 mm) thick sticks (lardons). In a heavy skillet cook bacon over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until golden; remove skillet from heat, leaving bacon in skillet. 3. Bring salted water to a boil. Add haricots verts and cook for 3 minutes or until fully cooked. Drain. Plunge into bowl of ice water to cool down. Drain well and pat dry.

A New Kind of Love…for Salad 4. Have ready another skillet with 1 inch (2.5 cm) warm water and set aside. Half-fill a 4-quart saucepan with water and stir in white vinegar. Bring liquid to a bare simmer. Break each egg into a teacup. Slide 1 egg into simmering liquid and immediately push white around yolk with a slotted spoon, moving egg gently. Egg will become oval, with yolk completely covered by white. Add remaining 3 eggs in same manner. Simmer eggs about 5 minutes for runny yolks to about 7 minutes for firmer yolks. Immediately transfer eggs to skillet of warm water.

Makes 4 servings Ingredients 8 oz (250 g) frisée (French curly endive) 6 oz (175 g) thick-cut bacon slices 16 haricots verts (green beans) 2 tbsp (25 mL) distilled white vinegar

5. Reheat bacon in its skillet over moderate heat. Add shallots and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Add the Newman’s Own Balsamic Vinaigrette and boil 5 seconds. Immediately pour hot dressing over frisée and toss with salt and pepper to taste. Divide salad among four plates and top with drained poached eggs and haricots verts. Season eggs with salt and pepper and serve salad immediately.

4 large eggs 2 tbsp (25 mL) chopped shallots 3 tbsp (45 mL) Newman’s Own Balsamic Vinaigrette Salt and pepper

Reena Nerbas

Hi Reena, I have three pairs of pants that say ‘dry clean’ but I am hoping that they can be washed (perhaps in cold water or hand washed) and hope that you can provide some assistance or advice. The fabric content is as follows: 64% polyester, 34% rayon and 2% spandex, 57% cotton, 32% polyester, 9% rayon and 2% elastane, 54% virgin wool, 30% viscose, 15% polyamide nylon and 1% elastane. Thank- you. Michelle Hi Michelle, It is always safe to follow care label instructions and if the label says “dry clean” that is what you should do. With that said, the last time I was inside a drycleaners was about 18 years ago picking up my wedding dress. When I purchase dry clean fabrics unless they are non-washable silk, I hand wash them in cold water and hang or lay them flat to dry. Whatever you do don’t put rayon, wool or viscose into the dryer. Dear Reena, I have a huge problem with fruit flies. How can I get rid of them quickly? Thanks, Laurelly Hi Laurelly, Apple cider vinegar and dish soap in a cup work great to catch fruit flies but some people want a faster cure especially at this time of the year when flies are at their peak. First plug all drains (they hatch inside drains), refrigerate all fruit, if weather permits put plants outside. The fastest way to get rid of flies big and small is quite simply with a fly swatter, you will locate several if you look at your windows. If you can’t hit them fast enough, spray them with hairspray, this freezes their wings and then you can swat them. Get them now because they multiply at enormous rates! Hi Reena, For the first time in my life I bought an expensive bra. The problem is that the clips on each strap constantly slide onto my shoulders instead of staying put where I want them. Any suggestions? Signed, Anonymous Hi there, Have no fear super glue is here! Squirt a tiny dab of super glue underneath each clip and the clips will never move again. Another option is to sew each clip into place. Dear Reena, I’ve now gone through your third book twice; there are so many great ideas. Reading your ingenious ideas for various uses such as toothpaste gave me the idea to try it on two problem areas. First, it did an excellent job on the inside glass of my oven door. Secondly, I had almost given up on the badly discolored floor of my basement shower, and then I tried toothpaste and a stiff brush. Presto! It looks great once again. I love your tip about putting an unlit wooden match in your mouth while chopping onions, works every time! Also, when I know a fabric is colorfast, Head and Shoulders Dandruff shampoo has now become my first line of attack on stains. It

sometimes takes more than one wash, but always works in the end (another one of your gems)! Can you please give me a great recipe for homemade play dough? Thank-you for everything. Jan Wow Jan, I love that you are brave enough to not only try out household solutions but that you take the time to report your own findings! The key to a great play dough recipe is to use sea salt instead of table salt. Play dough recipe: Boil half cup sea salt in 2 cups water until dissolved. Add 1 package Kool-Aid for color, 2 tbsp. vegetable oil, 3 cups flour, 2 tbsp. alum (available at grocery stores). Knead until smooth. Store in a covered container in the fridge. Thank-you for your letter! Dear Reena, I just got married, what is the best way to clean my wedding dress? Francesca Congratulations Francesca! Take the dress to a drycleaner who specializes in caring for wedding gowns. Ask about guarantees and cleaning methods. Next get your hands on a pH neutral box and acid free tissue paper. Make sure that the container is free from peak-a-boo windows. Light causes yellowing over time. Store your dress in a dry environment and at a steady temperature (not a garage, attic or basement).

Home energy audits: a how-to guide for consumers Help protect your home with shades such as Duette Architella honeycomb shades from Hunter Douglas (featured side) that can reduce heat loss at the window by up to 50 percent when properly installed. (NC)—With

the holidays and colder months just around the corner, now is the time to find easy ways to save money. Performing a simple home energy audit can help cut costs by pinpointing the places where a house is losing energy, identifying ways to conserve hot water and electricity, and evaluating the efficiency of the home’s appliances and heating and cooling systems. Sue Rainville, director of marketing for Hunter Douglas, Canada’s leading manufacturer of custom window fashions, offers the following steps for consumers to conduct a home energy audit: Locate that leak Window frames and doors are obvious sources of drafts. Check electrical outlets, switch plates, baseboards, fireplace dampers and wall or window-mounted air conditioners for spaces. Look for gaps around pipes, faucets and mail slots. Apply caulking and weather stripping where needed. Look to your furnishings “Windows are rightly called the ‘eyes’ of a home, yet they are also energy holes through which heat can escape,” said Rainville. Help protect your home with shades such as Duette Architella honeycomb shades from Hunter Douglas that can reduce heat loss at the window by up to 50 percent when properly installed. Attics and basements In cold weather, air leaks in the attic act like a chimney, drafting expensive heated air upwards and sucking cold air into the rest of the home. Large gaps are also often found around plumbing pipes, light fixtures, chimneys and soffits. Ensure openings for items such as pipes, ductwork and chimneys are sealed with expanding foam caulk.

Page 30

Step outside Insulation needs to work both inside and out. Check areas where two different construction materials meet, such as the foundation and the exterior brick or siding. Look for cracks and holes in the mortar, foundation and siding, and seal them with the appropriate material. Using these tips, consumers can learn how to conduct a home energy audit on their own, just in time for those cold winter months. Eco-Chic

Five steps to an environmentally - trendy you

(NC)—From hemp dresses to shoes made from recycled tires one thing is clear, when it comes to fashion, green is the new black. Fashionistas can go green and stay gorgeous with a few quick and easy changes to their beauty regime. 1. What’s old is new again. Though fashion trends are in one season and out the next, vintage pieces are always in highstyle. For shabby-chic finds that will revamp your wardrobe, check out local flea markets, consignment shops or antique shows. If you have to buy items new, look for eco-friendly materials such as bamboo or organic cotton. 2. Green machine. When caring for your clothes, choose the cold water setting on your washing machine and only turn the washer on when you have a full load. For a true green clean, consider using Green Works laundry detergents which are tough on stains, safe on colours and made with plant-based cleaning ingredients and minerals. More information on these products is available online at www.clorox.ca.

landfills across the globe. Reduce your waste and trim unwanted hairs by investing in a reusable razor. 4. Makeover your make-up. Though a swipe of lipstick can take you from drab to fab, some cosmetics aren’t so friendly on the environment. Next time you are at the make-up counter, look for lipsticks and mascaras made from plant-based ingredients rather than petroleum products, which can be harmful to the environment. When purchasing eye shadow or powders, choose a brand that offers reusable compacts so you can refill the containers again and again. 5. Luscious locks. Keep your tresses and the environment squeaky clean with shampoos and conditioners that are chemical-free. At the grocery store, look for biodegradable hair care products packaged in recyclable materials. - News Canada

The Bailey name has long been associated with funeral services in Melville, every since W. T. (Bill) Bailey was the community’s funeral director during the first half of the twentieth century, starting in 1914.

Our Future

He was later assisted by his son Ray Bailey. It was here that W. Allan Bailey, the founder and president of Bailey’s Funeral Home, was first introduced to the profession, assisting his grandfather and father. In 1983, Allan Bailey opened a Chapel in Melville, bringing the family name back to the community after an absence of about three decades. The Melville Chapel is located at 101 Fifth Avenue West. To ensure that a funeral ceremony is truly a reflection of the life lived, we appreciate the opportunity to explain the options available to you, and the services we provide.

Unofficially, the Porsche Carrera GT is a racecar, a racecar built for the street. What makes it a racecar is not necessarily the huge power produced by its V10 engine or the carbon fiber construction that keeps everything very lightweight - although these features surely make it a fast car. It’s more the sum of its parts that make this car worth every bit of its $440,000 price tag. The Porsche Carrera GT was introduced as a 2004 model and until 2005 there were already a few changes in order to make the Carrera GT the new Porsche super car. These were minor updates in order to make it a little more street friendly. Between the supplemental bar hoops is now mounted a glass screen. The seats height is adjusted along with the additional bolstering in the thigh area. The Carrera GT is easy recognizable, as it’s a low, sleek, lightweight roadster, very beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside. Two removable panels that can be stored in the front trunk make the foul weather protection available.

lightweight materials such as magnesium for the car’s substantial wheels and the frames of its special sport seats, the result being a faster and safer car. To prove so, The Carrera GT accelerates from a standing start to 62 mph (100km/h) in only 3.9 seconds reaches 100 mph (160 km/h) in less than seven seconds, 125 mph (200 km/h) in less than 10 seconds, and can achieve a top test-track speed of 205 mph (330 km/h). What makes this car have these impressive results is it’s 5.5 liter, normally aspirated V10 engine for racing created in the development center in Weissach, Germany. That engine’s bores have been enlarged to displace 5.7 liters in the Carrera GT. It has a very low center of gravity, a 68-degree V angle and four valves-per-cylinder heads. Since the block, crankshaft and camshafts are all made of light alloys, the engine weights only 472 pounds (214 kg).

The car has unique features, among which are: 5.7 liter, 605 horsepower V10 engine, monocoque chassis with Porsche-patented engine and transmission mounts made of carbon-reinforced plastic and the first use of a ceramic composite clutch in a production car. A very important aspect is that The Carrera is safe and stable at speeds up to 205 mph, thanks to its aerodynamic and race-bred suspension package. The design of the suspension is so sophisticated that the shape of its components improves the Carrera GT`s aerodynamics. The designers used

To stop this “monster” Porsche`s team used a high-tech braking system. Developed for demanding motorsports applications, ceramic brakes are the first to work for on-road use. The massive 15 inch ventilated discs and sixpiston calipers have the amazing capacity of bringing the car to a sure and safe stop, matched only by the stunning acceleration of Carrera GT. Porsche Carrera GT is definitely a exotic appearance, a car that can do it all: fascinate you with its good looks, astound you with its performance and abilities on the race track. you drive says a lot about you and how you perceive things like safety, fuel efficiency, the cost of fuel and the role you play in helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The bottom line is we all want to save money and help the environment, right? See if you can see yourself in any of these four driving styles, recently identified by Natural Resources Canada at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca: • Aggressive driver - Accelerates quickly, brakes hard, drives significantly over the speed limit, makes frequent lane changes, passes other drivers whenever possible, tailgates, and is focused on being first; • Rushed driver - Drives and accelerates a little faster than most and sometimes passes other drivers.

Always in a rush and is focused on saving time; • Average driver - Drives with the flow of traffic, reacts to other traffic, looking ahead but is not really engaged by the driving task and is more focused on the destination than the drive; • Eco-driver- Accelerates gently, follows the speed limit, anticipates traffic flow, and coasts to decelerate. Considers alternatives to driving, combines trips, monitors fuel consumption, reduces idling, maintains proper tire pressure, and reduces air conditioning use. Focused on safety and saving fuel, the fuel-efficient driver will probably also have more money in his or her wallet! newscanada www.newscanada.com

Winter driving tip:

How long should you warm up your car for? (NC)—Canadian winters can be bitterly cold, so warming up your car is essential. Depending on where you live, 60 seconds might be all the time you need. According to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), warming up your car for more than 60 seconds can be an expensive, inefficient and a harmful waste of fuel.

In cold weather, use a block heater on a timer for two hours and then start driving easy and let the car warm up on the road. Letting your car idle in the driveway for more than 60 seconds, either by a remote starter or starting it yourself, wastes fuel and does not adequately warm up all your vehicle

components such as the transmission, tires or the catalytic converter. Driving your car “smooth and easy” is the best way to warm up your vehicle’s components. Of course make sure your windows are clear before you drive away. If drivers avoided idling by just three minutes a day over the year, Canadians would collectively save 630 million litres of fuel, and $630 million in fuel costs (assuming a fuel cost of $1.00/L). Basics About Operating A Snowmobile

Once a person gets over their distaste for winter weather conditions, operating a snowmobile can be an addictive winter sport. Being in the wide-open landscape that is covered by a

fresh coating of white, pristine powder can be breathtaking and even enthralling for first-time snowmobilers. It is also a great way for families to spend time together while remaining active during the winter months instead of gathering around the television for a few hours every night. After learning the basics of operating a snowmobile, conquering the white blanket of fresh snow will be an exhilarating activity that families and friends will undoubtedly cherish together. The first thing to always remember is to wear your safety gear before operating your snowmobile. Safety equipment consists of a regulation helmet and a pair of goggles designed for cold weather activities. It is important to make sure this equipment is fastened correctly or else it could cause problems during the snowmobiling excursion. It is also a good idea to wear a snowmobile suit that is specifically designed to protect the body from the frigid elements of winter – such as a waterproof inner lining – so snowmobile riders do not suffer from a case of hypothermia. A good pair of gloves is also vital because the hands will be controlling most of the actions of the machinery. Cold hands do not make for quick reactions, so winter gloves are an absolute essential. Next, get comfortable with the machinery. Sit on it, move around, and get familiar with the feel of the snowmobile’s intricate details. Find the right distance on the seat so that the handlebars are within an acceptable reach from your body. Stretching to reach the handlebars is not an effective method and neither is sitting too close so that you are scrunched up against them. Keeping the handlebars at arm’s length, as long as it is a comfortable distance, is ideal. Also, place your feet in the stirrups that sit on the front lower area of the snowmobile. Get the feel for the stirrups and do not take your feet out of them when you are snowmobiling. They are designed to help you stay in control of the machinery when you make sharp turns on the snowy terrain. On the handlebars, find the throttle. This will typically be a lever that is on the right side of the snowmobile’s handlebar. Use your thumb to control the throttle, which negotiates the amount of speed desired. Similarly, on the left, you will generally find the brake lever on the handlebar. It does not take much pressure to pull the brake lever in order to slow down your

Page 70

snowmobile. For rides on softer and less compact snow trails, releasing pressure from the throttle will slow your snowmobile quickly. On more compact and smoother snow trails, however, you will need to apply pressure to the brake lever to achieve a stop. On ice, as you would in a vehicle, pumping the brakes by applying and releasing pressure on the brake lever will result in a smoother and typically safer stop on a snowmobile. Now that you have found the throttle and the brake (the two most important parts of any vehicle), you are ready to begin moving. To do this, apply pressure to the throttle. Apply ample pressure to slightly rev the snowmobile’s engine until it begins to move. As you move forward, turn the handlebars into the direction you want to travel. When making a sharper and faster turn, it is best to lean into the turn. For instance, if you are making a sharp right turn, lean your body to the right without removing your feet from the stirrups. The stirrups help to stabilize your body while helping to prevent the rider from slipping off of the machine. For beginners, ride your snowmobile on the trails that have been packed and already traveled until you get the feel for snowmobiling. Veering off into unpacked snow might get your stuck or even cause an accident with another snowmobiler. Following these basic steps is essential for first-time and inexperienced snowmobilers to successfully practice this fun winter sport. As always, safety is the first issue to be addressed before operating any machinery. But above the safety precautions, knowing how to turn and lean into a turn is important for operating any snowmobile safely. Once learned, it will most likely be a winter pastime that will be enjoyed for many frigid seasons to come. How to get the

most mileage out of every tank of fuel this winter (NC)—Follow these fuel-efficient driving tips from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and make fewer trips to the gas station this winter:

• Avoid aggressive driving behaviours, such as quick starts and hard stops – this can increase your fuel consumption by up to 39 per cent; • Drive at the posted speed limit – decreasing your cruising speed from 120 km/h to 100 km/h will decrease fuel consumption by approximately 20 per cent; • Don’t idle – idling for more than 60 seconds uses more fuel and produces more CO2 compared to restarting your engine; • Use cruise control – on dry, flat, wide-open highways, use cruise control to help improve fuel efficiency by maintaining an even and steady speed;

• Take the most fuel-efficient route – routes with fewer stop lights and less traffic may use less fuel than shorter routes with more stop lights and heavy traffic; • Maintain your vehicle properly – a poorly maintained vehicle consumes more fuel, produces higher levels of emissions, requires expensive repairs, and has a lower resale value; • Measure your tire pressure once a month – a single tire under-inflated by just 56 kilopascals (eight pounds per square inch) can increase your vehicle’s fuel consumption by four per cent; • Calculate your mileage – set your odometer every time you fill up and challenge yourself to get better and better readings. NRCan has a handy online fuel calculator on their website at www.vehicles.nrcan. gc.ca. newscanada www.newscanada.com
