Top 7 New Years Resolutions If you’re not sure what you should be putting on your New Years Resolutions list, here are the top 7 resolutions other people have used:
1. Spend More Time With Friends and Family It’s easy to get so busy with work that you neglect your friends and family. Before you know it, your friends have found new people to spend time with and your family have grown up. Plan to meet up with your friends on a regular basis, whether it’s for a meal or a movie. And make time to spend quality time with your family.You’ll thank yourself for it. 2. Get fit Face it, most people aren’t as fit as they were in their younger days. Getting fit doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym 5 times a week. It could be as simple as parking further away in the parking lot, taking the stairs rather than the elevator and generally being less of a couch potato.You don’t need Arnold Schwarzenegger’s biceps to be fit... 3. Lose weight This often goes hand in hand with getting fit. Choose an eating plan (notice I didn’t say diet) that fits with your lifestyle. Then take the time to notice your food when you eat it rather than wolfing it down and paying no attention. Notice when you are full and stop eating, even if there’s still food left on your plate. Start listening to your whole body rather than just eating “because”. 4. Quit smoking A lot of people vow to quit smoking at the start of the New Year. Often they’re the same people you’ll see gasping for a cigarette a couple days later. Plan your quitting. Treat yourself to a hypnosis session or CD/book combination. Buy this for yourself as a Christmas present if you’re that organized. Then follow the program. It’s cheaper and more effective than patches or gum and doesn’t feed your body more nicotine. 5. Quit drinking In the same way as smoking, a lot of people decide to quit drinking when the New Year arrives. The thought of hangover-free days and

a healthier liver is good. Again, there are plenty of self-help programs that will assist with your quest to give up alcohol. Search around and you’ll find one that works with you. 6. Get a better job Many people use the New Year as an excuse to change their jobs. Make sure you don’t leap from the frying pan into the fire by doing research on the new place you’re planning to work for. Read up on resume and CV writing to make sure that your application stands out from the crowd. Maybe use a hypnosis or subliminal program to boost your confidence and presentation skills.
7. Help other people This is a very popular New Years resolution. There are plenty of voluntary organizations that would appreciate some extra help and volunteering is easy. Check locally for a list of different charities and choose one that fits with your personal goals and aims. If you can’t commit regularly, don’t be afraid to say so. It’s better to say “I can only help once a month” than to say you’ll help every day or week and then not attend. BATHROOM STORAGE IDEAS: Create a Room Unique to Your Personality
The bathroom is a place of necessity, body maintenance and beautification, and at times it is a refuge from the rest of the world and a source of relaxation. It is surprising how much time people actually spend in this small room. That is why it is important to make this room feel spacious, organized, and unique to your personality. In order to accomplish these goals, we need to consider what goes in it. As far as products go, it changes with each individual, but generally you can find everything you need for hair care, face and skin care, oral hygiene, shaving products, eye care, make-up, and in some cases much more. Many bathrooms also house multiple appliances such as curling irons, blow dryers, and chargers for toothbrushes and razors, etc. And let’s not forget the essentials like toilet paper and towels. This is just a broad overview of items that might be found in the bathroom, but it can be agreed that this place is the home for a lot of stuff. But the ironic part is that in most cases the bathroom is the smallest room in the house. This is why it is so important to establish an organization system using unique storage solutions as well as making the most out of your bathroom cabinetry. Here are some good ideas to make your bathroom organized and feel spacious, while reflecting your own style: * Use vertical space. Because this place is generally smaller there isn’t much floor space to but low cabinets and dressers along the perimeter of the room. When it comes to storage, people often forget about the top half of the walls. Install wall cabinets or make sure that the storage furniture you do have is tall. * Make use of the corners. But there are some really attractive corner shelving systems that really utilize awkward and unused corners. When placing

things on shelves, place them in attractive baskets first to avoid clutter. * Organize using baskets within cabinet drawers. When there is no separation system within drawers, each drawer becomes a cluttered junk drawer where things get lost and are hard to find. Gather products and supplies of a similar task and place them in a basket or container that fits nicely within the drawer. You can buy boxes or baskets or make your own creative containers. * Use the space behind the door. The door of the bathroom generally stays open unless in use, so it is a perfect place to hide a lot of items you use every day. Install racks to hang extra towels or hooks for jewelry or hair appliances. Try painting the back of the door with magnetic paint and then use magnetic trendy bin containers for small items that often get lost like earrings or bobby pins. * Hide cords and appliances. When you have the option of installing your own cabinets, have an outlet installed within the cabinet where you plug in appliances such as curling irons and blow dryers. Also try installing tilt out bins for each appliance like those in salons. This keeps hair tools accessible, yet it hides the cords well and keeps the bathroom clutter-free. If you must plug something in on a countertop, make sure you put it away as soon as you are done using it. Long cords are an eye sore. * Use a shower caddy. Nothing screams clutter like a bath tub lined with bottles, razors, soap and other shower needs. Many creative types of in-theshower shelving units are available as well as the standard shower caddies. Use them to decrease clutter. * Keep it clean. Make sure there is a spot for everything and put all items back when you are done using something. The less cluttered you can keep your bathroom; the more spacious and organized your bathroom will feel. Strategies For Stressless
Holiday
Entertaining
Stressless entertaining is fast becoming an oxymoron. With parties and social gatherings growing more and more elaborate, with everyone trying to outdo each other, hosting a get-together is a difficult task to undertake any time of year. Throw in some holiday chaos and it’s downright nerve-wracking. Maybe in our eagerness to impress and bedazzle our guests, we’re missing the point entirely. Warm, relaxing, convivial social interaction should be our main concern when rolling out the welcome mat. Here are some strategies, excerpted from my new book “400 Ways to Stop Stress Now...and Forever!”, that will help you keep your eye on that objective. Have small intimate get-togethers. Big parties are expensive, time-consuming and a heck of a lot of work. Even if you’re lucky enough to talk with everyone, it may only amount to brief, cursory snippets of conversation. A big bash can be fun, sure, if you’re not the one throwing it. Smaller parties are easier to arrange, less work, less expensive, and leave lots of time to enjoy your guests, who feel more special, too. Entertain fewer people...more often. Keep the menu simple. There’s no need to overwhelm your guests with more choices than necessary. An hors d’ oeuvre, a main dish, a couple of side dishes, and dessert is plenty. It will save you time and money, and make entertaining easy enough that you’ll want to do it more often. Overdoing it also unfairly raises the stakes for guests who want to reciprocate. Focus on the quality of what you serve, not the quantity, and on making your visitors feel relaxed and comfortable. Your parties can’t help but turn out special. Expect people to cancel out on you. Last-minute dropouts and no-shows

can be disappointing -- especially when you’ve gone to a lot of trouble. Blame it on our over-scheduled times, a general slackening of social responsibility, whatever. But this, unfortunately, is the way things are. So be ready for it. If you’re planning an event or activity involving several people, expect one or more will almost certainly cancel. Invite or recruit extra people to make up for the inevitable loss. And if everyone does show up (slim chance), you’ll enjoy an unanticipated bonus. Invite someone over for coffee. Or tea, or a glass of wine, or a beer, if that’s your preference. Somehow this simple, casual way to connect with others during the holiday season has lost ground to more elaborate and expensive forms of entertaining. But informal drop-by visits with friends and neighbors is a great way to catch up, share experiences, vent concerns, and give yourself a needed break from the rat race. Pure, uplifting social interaction…without all the fuss. Try it. Entertaining is supposed to be fun, remember? When you throw a dinner party or host a gathering, it’s not an audition, you’re not on trial and your guests aren’t judges and juries. Yet that’s how you might see it -- something to fret about, even dread. Which, if you’re worried things won’t go well, will all but assure it. Remember, it’s not about you. It’s about inviting people into your home and making them feel welcome and comfortable. If you’re tense and unsure, that’s what they’ll pick up on. (How many times have you attended a tautly wound event and had a perfectly lousy time?) So make it fun. Be casual, gracious, spontaneous. You’ll be a hit, and so will your party. You may be the type of person who never leaves the house without your sunglasses during the warmer months. Not only are they great protection from the sun’s glaring rays, but they’re also quite the accessory these days as well. Something that is really hot right now is tables that are designed to look like wooden boxes. You should be able to find little tables like these at most any furniture or second hand store. A wooden box table is versatile and you are able to display collections or knick-knacks either on top or within the table. Also, depending on the size, you may even be able to mount it on the wall for a retro European look. It is more important to have the right mix of furniture than to have a lot of it. We have all been in a room that is overly cluttered, and not fun to be in. It pays off to make an investment in a few really nice pieces as opposed to a lot of clutter—you don’t want your friends to confuse your place with your Aunty Sue’s. If there is enough space to move around your room and the table or vase is adding a cool feel then you will know that you have been successful in your hunt for the perfect accent furniture. How to Quit Struggling With Duvet Covers There a few things better than waking up thinking you have to get up for work, only to realize that is a Sunday, and you can have that lie in. Such a treat is made even more appealing by bedding down into the welcoming embrace of your duvet of course. Such experiences make the constant struggle with getting your duvets into their duvet covers worthwhile. However, with this handy little guide, the weekly struggle with your duvet covers and pillowcases could well be a thing of the past. Indeed, after a little practice, there is no reason why you couldn’t have all your beds changed within a matter of minutes. When loading your washing machine with your duvet covers; ensure you have turned them inside out; this is key to success in filling your duvet covers. Once washed, store them away to air, as you usually would. Fully aired and fresh as a daisy, you can now put your freshly laundered linen on your bed. Firstly, place you duvets on the bed and lay the inside out duvet covers on top, with the opening at the bottom. Take your right hand, and slide it all the way up to the top right hand corner of the duvet covers. Take both the corner of the cover and the corner of the duvet in your clenched fist. With your left hand, take the bottom of the duvet opening, and quickly pull this over itself. You will find half of the duvet is now within the cover; though it won’t look particularly neat or comfortable at this point. Repeat the steps above on the

opposite side of the duvets; remembering to pull the duvet covers over as quickly as possible. Again, the end result may not look the best at first, however, tuck the bottom corners of the duvet into the corners of the covers and smooth out. It will already look a lot better, though some lumps where the duvet has gathered will remain. Next, take each corner of the top of the duvet covers firmly in your hands, and give them a good shake. It may take one or three attempts to fully right the lumps of duvet; and of course you can smooth things down with your hands if needs be. Once happy, simply finish the job by doing up the zipper or buttons at the bottoms of the cover. It may take you one or two tries to fully grasp this concept, but I am confident you will find the process much more preferable than struggling to drag the duvet in from the bottom up. If you can rope somebody in to help you too, (kids love this by the way - it’s fun), you will find the job takes practically no time. To ensure your duvet covers are always in tip top condition, store them in a plastic airtight container, and give them a quick work through the tumble dryer with a freshener sheet. There’s sure is nothing that says home like the smell of fresh-baked bread. Except for, possibly, when the baker takes it up a notch and the bread in the oven is banana bread. Though it is bread, this enjoyable treat is in many ways more like a cake. The leavening agent in banana bread is usually baking soda instead of yeast. What’s more unlike regular bread, banana bread is baked from batter and not dough. And evidently, it includes bananas that’s normally mashed and put into the batter. A huge family favorite, this has been around for years! In fact it first came into popularity in the 1930’s, and ever since then a number of varieties have appeared in cookbooks. Banana bread is relatively easy to make, and hence popular among home bakers. In addition it can often be found in the display cases of bakeries and coffee shops. It is not only tasty but also versatile. Usually a great on-the-go breakfast item, either at home or grabbed at the coffee shop where the busy professional stops for his or her daily dose of java. Also it can be packed in a lunchbox that makes it a great ending to the afternoon meal, but is just as likely to be a warm after-school snack waiting when children hop off the bus. A pizza made at home should be better than a commercial pizza. You get
it fresh from the oven made with fresh ingredients and the combination of ingredients that you want, on a homemade crust, and with the care that is not possible commercially. But there are tricks to the technique that will make that pizza truly wonderful.
• A great pizza must have a great crust. A soggy crust will never do. Instead of piling the goodies on the uncooked dough, partially bake it first. Usually about eight minutes will do. Then pull it out of the oven, put the toppings on, and finish baking. • Don’t under bake the crust. The crust is done when the bottom is partially browned. Use a spatula or tongs to lift one edge and peek at the crust. • Never use a light-colored pan for baking a pizza. It will reflect the heat and you will have a hard time baking the crust thoroughly. • A baking stone will help bake the crust. Put the baking stone in the oven at least fifteen minutes ahead of the pizza. We like to bake our pizzas on a dark baking pan placed on top of the hot stone. • Place the pizza low in the oven where radiant heat from the heating elements will help bake the crust. • If you have trouble forming the pizza crust, the gluten may be the problem. Gluten gives the dough elasticity and a tight dough wants to spring back into shape. Partially shape the crust and then walk away for five to ten minutes. When you get back, the dough will have relaxed and you can finish the crust. • A pizza crust of uniform thickness is a better crust. If you are not adept at spinning the crust, roll it to a uniform thickness of about 1/4 inch with a rolling pin. You can do that on a peel dusted with cornmeal or semolina flour so that the crust will slip off easily onto the stone or pan. If you don’t have a peel, a sheet of heavy cardboard or even a wooden

cutting board will do. You can also form the crust in your pan. The lips on the pan will preclude a rolling pin, but you can purchase a little rolling pin meant for the task (and for rolling pasta) that will work within the rims. If all else fails, grab a small jar and use it as a rolling pin. • If you don’t have time to make or buy your favorite sauce, a jar of spaghetti sauce will do. Homemade is better but a good commercial sauce is okay. • Some people prefer tender crusts; we prefer chewy. For a tender crust, use all-purpose flour. Our favorite crusts are made with bread flour tempered just a bit with whole wheat, rye, or all-purpose flours. • For a really great pizza crust, once the dough is kneaded, cover it and place it in the refrigerator over night. The next day, remove the dough and let it rise on the counter. Allow plenty of time for the dough to come to room temperature and rise. At lower temperatures, the yeast produces a complex yeasty flavor that is very good. • Pizza dough that is just a bit on the wet side is easier to work with and makes a nicer crust. • Toppings can be anything you want them to be. Measurements don’t count though less is usually better. Experiment with some of your favorite foods. • Olive oil makes a much nicer pizza crust than vegetable oil. • If you are having trouble cutting your pizza with a knife or pizza wheel, grab the kitchen shears. This red tea panna cotta is a light and creamy dessert that’s sure to delight and impress over the holidays and throughout the year. Make your party memorable with this light, tea-infused dessert that will wow your guests. Quick tip: Use an iced tea made from real tea leaves so you’re getting those natural tea antioxidants. Antioxidants are a factor in the maintenance of good health. Red Tea Panna Cotta 1/4 cup berry-flavoured red iced tea (for gelatine mixture) 3 1/2 tsp gelatine powder 3 1/4 cups 18% cream 3/4 cup icing sugar 1/3 cup berry-flavoured red iced tea (for cream mixture) Marinated raspberries: 1/4 cup berry-flavoured red iced tea 1/2 pint of fresh raspberries 2 tsp sugars 1. Place 1/4 cup of red tea in a small bowl, and sprinkle with gelatin powder. Set aside for 5 minutes. 2. Heat the cream, icing sugar and remaining red tea in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat until warm. Stir 1/4 cup of warm mixture into the softened gelatin, then add back into the saucepan. Gently warm the mixture for 4 minutes stirring occasionally. 3. Lightly oil eight 1/2 cup moulds. Pour mixture into moulds and refrigerate for 6 hours or overnight. 4. Wash and dry the raspberries and place in a small bowl. 5. Dissolve the sugar in the tea and add to raspberries. 6. Top panna cottas with raspberries when ready to serve. Bacon Wrapped Water Chestnuts
brie and phyllo appetizer
• 1-8 oz. can water chestnuts, drained • 8 slices bacon, cut in half • 1/4 c. soy sauce • 1/2 tsp. ground ginger • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
• 1/2 box frozen phyllo pastry (long box) • 6 inch wedge Brie cheese • 1/2 c. butter, melted • 1/ c. brown sugar • 1/2 c. peeled apples, chopped and peeled • 1/2 c. dried cranberries • 1/2 c. walnuts or pecans
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 450°. Wrap each water chestnut in a half slice of bacon. Secure with a toothpick. Combine remaining ingredients. Pour over the bacon-chestnuts. Refrigerate overnight of for several hours, basting sauce over the chestnuts from time to time. Drain. Place on rack in baking dish. Broil, turning frequently, until bacon is cooked.

• 1 pkg. creme cheese • 1 can crabmeat, drained • 6 green onions, finely chopped • 2 tsp. worcestershire sauce • 3 tsp lemon juice • 3 tsp. fresh chopped basil • Fresh ground pepper • 2 tbsp. melted butter
• 1 french loaf • 2 pkgs. creme cheese • 1 c. mayonaise • 1 c. chopped green onions • 2 c. finely grated old aged cheddar • 2 tins crab meat, drained • 1/2 c. fresh bacon bits DIRECTIONS: Beat cheese and mayonnaise. Mix in remaining ingredients. Cut the french loaf in half and hollow out with a spoon. Fill bread with mixture. Wrap filled bread in foil. Place in oven and bake at 300° for 2 hours.
• 30 white mushroomsstems removed DIRECTIONS: Combine the creme cheese and crabmeat. Add all remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour melted butter into the glass baking dish; place mushrooms bottom side down. Fill each mushroom cap with the crab mixture. Sprinkle mushrooms with a dry white wine for extra flavor. Bake at 350° for aproximately 20 minutes or until mushrooms are cooked. Sprinkle with shredded asagio cheese and serve.

DIRECTIONS: Unroll the phyllo sheets into a cookie sheet. Cut up Brie and place in middle of phyllo sheets. Place remaining ingredients on top, except 1/4 cup butter. Bring up sides of phyllo pastry, making a bundle. Use the remaining butter to help make it hold. Place into a 375° oven for 1520 minutes. Serve with crackers.

MOVING INTO THE NEXT DECADE Over the last number of years, Melville has tried re-branding itself to attract more residents to our City. That “Best Kept Secret “ promo was very successful. So successful that we had to look at attracting developers to build up our residential areas of the City and of course, it also meant more opportunities for the small business sector which has also responded very strongly with many new business developments in the last few years. And hopefully more to come yet. All this strength hasn’t been missed by our medium to large business sector. CN has continued to be a large employer in our community. Recently they have been replacing rail along the rail lines to be ready for future growth in their transportation division. This has also led to some hiring by that corporation within our area of western Canada. Babcock / Wilcox, a world renowned power plant components manufacturer, who also have a presence in Melville, have also had a busy year in our community. They have secured some good long term contracts so they have been busy re-employing recently laid off employees. There has also been some grounds work done on their property pointing to more expansion in the near future. Of course Melville’s 26.5 Million dollar communiplex is well under construction and should be a valued asset to our community when completed in the spring of 2011. This bodes well, not only for our sports community but also our cultural community and our many seniors who look forward to the indoor walking track and the health centre to be included in this structure. The health-care and education facilities that are a strong part of Melville’s fabric continue to show strength and growth on an ongoing basis. Since our agriculture community has had some better years, the grain merchants and farm supply businesses have continued to show strong growth in the Melville area, with modest expansion and re-tooling. All these positives for a community the size of Melville can’t help

but underline the fact that Melville is “On The Right Track”, and should continue to do so for years to come. So regardless if you are an individual or family that is thinking about starting over again in a new area, or possibly living a long time dream and starting a business, please contact us and see how we can make your dreams come true. Green cars. Dark green cars are driven by those regarded as trustworthy and well balanced, while bright green car drivers tend to be trendy and lively. Yellow cars. Yellow car drivers are a very loving bunch. Those in bright yellow appear to be trendy and whimsical; yellow-gold drivers are warm, indulging and intelligent; and those bright, sunshine yellow drivers have a very sunny disposition and are joyful and young at heart.
The “Color Answer Book” author and color expert Leatrice Eiseman believes she knows the answer. In the book, Eiseman says that a vehicle’s color reveals quite a bit about the personality of its purchaser. A few colors that have been researched and linked to specific personality types are: Black cars. Black cars are said to be driven by the empowered and leader-type drivers who are typically not easily manipulated. These drivers tend to appreciate elegance and things that are regarded as traditional and classic.
Silver cars. At the time of the writing, silver cars were thought to not only be driven by those with elegant tastes, but also those who are cool and who love a futuristic look. In 2000, silver cars became the most popular color choice by American drivers.
Other colors. Taupe and light brown car drivers are noted for their simpler tastes, while drivers of dark brown car tend to be very down to earth; neutral gray car drivers are more practical; purple car drivers are known for their creative, individualistic ways; and orange seems to be the color of fun loving and trendy drivers. Car experts may not agree that there is a correlation between a car’s color and its owner, but they can offer suggestions for choosing a car color that will put more money into the buyer’s pocket in the long run. Sound advice is that edgy colors may be great for the moment, but in the long term they can lower your trade-in value, as these colors are more difficult to resell. Traditional colors such as grey, blue, black, and red are seemingly always in-demand from those looking for used vehicles.
