How to Choose the Right Bookcase For Your Home

Bookcases, by name, are meant to house books of all shapes and sizes. They come in all sorts of styles, including Barrister, Cubed, Corner and Kids size. They can be black or white or patterned or wood finished. They can be open-face or covered in glass. They are often the centerpiece of a living room, and as such, can act as a central place to exhibit not just books, but their own interesting design. Funky bookshelves, bordering on the impractical, can keep a room upbeat and interesting. There are ones shaped like [square brackets] and {braces}; others in the shapes of pianos and accordions. Asymmetrical options, made of conjoined cube units, house CDs, DVDs, folders and books all at once. Coming in all sizes, these bookcases can take up the entire height and width of the wall. Want something s little toned down? Separate out the individual cubes to create smaller shelves in different parts of the room. Hexagonal pattern bookcases can house the occasional book, as well as toys and for-fun objects on display, while metal modular racks can create a multi-functional exhibit space for all your precious wares. When space is limited, and if contextually appropriate, a bookcase can be built into the lofted ceiling space above a den or bedroom. Skateboard shelves can be hip with the kids of the house and help them put away their notebooks, while cases with integrated nooks for reading can give the kids an interesting place to do their homework. You can organize you books by color to create a rainbow affect, though the time it would take to do that could be outside of the realm of possibility. However, on a rainy day, instead of watching TV all afternoon, perhaps color-coding books could be the perfect project to brighten up your time inside. And while you are at it, take advantage of having empty shelves and (finally) dust and clean them. If you are renting an apartment and can’t nick the walls or hang objects, use two tall narrow bookcases on either side of the window to hang a curtain rod in between. In one “unit” you will have shelf space and a window covering! Have household goods that need a little hiding? Fill

Page 4

your shelves with pretty baskets, which can hold items like remote controls, cleats, plastic bags, and so on. And if you have items that you wish to show off, ditch the baskets and give your books a run for their money; pair them with your trophies, photo albums, framed art, or toy trains. Use the tops of arm-level shelves to place your keys, wallet, or purse when you first walk in the door. Having a space where you can always put down your personal belongings will help prevent misplaced items and hopefully keep you from having to crawl around the entryway in search of your keychain. Though sometimes relegated to book storage and nothing more, bookcases can actually work as central design features for any room in your home, and display a variety of prized possessions. Modern updates leave you with tons of options to choose from, ranging from sleek and module to a traditional open-faced wood-finish. Choose according to your style and don’t be afraid to take advantage of every shelf, nook, and cranny. NEW TECHNOLOGY

TAKING DESIGN TO THE LIMIT WITH

Page 6

As we enter into a fresh new decade it’s evident that manufacturers are always researching new ways to provide consumers with bigger and better technologies – especially for the home! One of the exciting new materials that is intriguing the design world is a product that is a concrete derivative, but much lighter and more durable than regular concrete. The product is fireproof and wind and mold-resistant, which makes it the perfect solution for patio furniture or outdoor kitchens. Banish the thoughts of plain, rough surfaces – the product can be polished to a riverstone shine or textured to suit your preferences. It’s also an ideal product for fireplace mantels and wall panel systems where weight restrictions or specific dimensions are a concern. Custom designs can also be created which makes it ideal for homeowners who are looking for something specific or want a special feature in their home. Many people may still relate “concrete” to driveways and bridges – not tables and chairs. The first widely popular use of concrete in the home was used as countertops in kitchens. From here, the concrete craze has begun to branch out to other areas of the home, including the area of interior furnishings. More and more independent-minded homeowners are finding that concrete furniture is a way of getting exactly what they want, and adding some flair and originality to their homes. I love the original natural look of concrete, but for those who would prefer more color, a whole spectrum of colors are available which means it will fit perfectly with any décor. Concrete also looks wonderful when paired up with glass or wood – furniture pieces can be built with a very interesting and unique look.

fireplace surround systems that can be “mixed and matched” to create a custom look without the high price tag. Different design panel systems are available and can be paired up with any type of the mantel systems. In essence, you can create a truly eclectic look by using a more trendy (zebra print) surround with a very traditional mantel piece – absolutely stunning! The added bonus of these panel systems is that because it is so much lighter than concrete, there are no issues with having to re-enforce your floors. Concrete has always been my material of choice – it has wonderful characteristics and can be used in so many applications. It’s timeless and can be transformed into so many beautiful design elements in your home, including feature walls or headboards with incorporated accent lighting. It’s nice to know that there are so many options available for those homeowners who want to “break the mold”. E-mail your design questions and photos to designers@kohon.ca or visit our website at www.kohon.ca.

Decorating Tips:

Enhance natural light with window fashions such as Silhouette window shadings and Luminette Privacy Sheers (shown below) from Hunter Douglas featuring sheer panels that soften and diffuse the light and fabric vanes that rotate for privacy and light control. Also shown in the photo, new Luminette Modern Draperies as side panels.

Light is the forgotten element (NC)—Furniture, paint, flooring, layout – these are the things most commonly

associated with decorating a room. What people tend to forget is one of the most important factors in a room – lighting. Without proper lighting, these other decorative elements cannot be fully appreciated for their beauty because the room is either too dark or too bright. Sally Morse, director of creative services for Hunter Douglas, North America’s leading custom window fashions manufacturer, offers the following advice on the different types of lighting and how to take advantage of them when decorating: • General Illumination: Chandeliers are a stylish way to achieve general illumination. Measure the length of two walls in the room where it will be hung, add them up and you get the diameter. To find out how high to hang your chandelier, measure 32 inches above your table. • Task Lighting: Includes reading lamps and lights that lie above a stove or sink. The bottom of the lampshade should be at eye level when seated – you get a glare if above eye level or a reflection if below eye level.

Issue #2V3- Jan. 14/10

• Accent Lighting: Includes lamps of 60 watts of light or less. Decorate with this lighting using little lamps, buffet lamps or wall sconces, adding light with drama. • Natural Light: Enhance natural light and save on your electric bills, while still protecting against UV rays, with window fashions such as Silhouette window shadings and Luminette Privacy Sheers. They feature sheer panels and fabric vanes that rotate for privacy and light control. The sheers diffuse the incoming light for a softer, shadow-free interior illumination. Another hint, adjusting the vanes can draw the light deeper into the room. Using these tips, a well-lit room is just a switch away. Optimal Ways of Arranging Furniture Ever noticed how some rooms seem cozy and comfortable, whereas others have an indifferent and frosty look? Many attributes such as color and lighting contribute to a room’s ambience; the way the furniture is arranged also influences the atmosphere. Whether you are refurnishing or setting up a new room, or enhancing the level of comfort in an existing one, it helps to understand, first and foremost, how to arrange furniture in a way that suits your needs and helps in creating enjoyable and comfortable spaces. Furniture arrangement needs to start with understanding and analyzing the space of your room, how many people use the room, what is the room used for and so on. Balanced rooms are more pleasing to the eye and make more effective use of the available space. Many people simply set up their furniture haphazardly throughout their house. This can be quite understandable; after all, furniture can be heavy and awkward to move, and many homes simply aren’t friendly to furniture arrangement. However, by taking the time to arrange your furniture creatively, you can gather many advantages. Proper furniture arrangements can help to increase your comfort, define spaces, make smaller spaces look larger and vice versa. Most often people are so overwhelmed with the potential and insecurities of furniture arrangement, they are often left wondering where to start? One way out is to hire an interior decorator who will typically set their prices based on the number of hours, square footage of the home, etc. This may work out very expensive though. By using the services of an interior designer, you receive the benefit of their expertise to help you refine your selections and avoid costly mistakes. However, hiring the right decorator with great money saving tips can definitely help. If you know exactly what look is required for your rooms, you can decorate your home yourself. Ask yourself these questions about the room you want to redesign: what is the basic shape of the room, and what are its dimensions? What is its inherent nature? What are its problems? What are its plus points? Make a floor plan to help you visualize where to place furniture, how many pieces will fit into the room? Start with one room at

Page 10

a time. If you need brainwaves, check out model homes, furniture stores, decorating TV shows, furniture magazines and books, catalogs, and so on. Although it is difficult to point and say this is where this piece is to be put, some guidelines can be provided which will help you think about how you will use your space. Choose furniture that serves the room’s purpose. Ideally, a small room should have small pieces of furniture and large rooms should have heavier ones. Clean out the room before moving in the furniture Carpets and rugs help bring color and interest into the room. Visual interest can be enhanced by using “out of the ordinary” objects that could serve as décor. By arranging your furniture in new and exciting ways, you can help to redefine your rooms and make your house a real home. As mentioned earlier arranging furniture is a huge task and there are no hard and fast rules but with the right décor tips, furniture can be suited to fit your family better. Modern Sectional Sofas For a Modern Look reating a modern look when decorating you home can be a lot of fun and stress at the same time. How do you know the difference between a normal sofa and a modern sectional sofa? Don’t worry; modern sectional sofas are available in many styles, colors and fabrics that will make choosing your modern sectional sofa trouble-free. These modern sofas come in a variety of unique and beautiful designs. Modern sectional sofa designs will vary from anything unsymmetrical, artsy, arched, boxy to plain straight contemporary lines. For example, you will find some sofas with a slightly curved end and a comfy chaise, or if relaxation is the main aim it might include an extra arm padding and reclining massage features. Some other luxury and modern features are built in end tables, storage space, cup holders, adjustable head- and footrests and some even features lighting that is incorporated into the design.

need to consider the following. The modern sectional sofa you pick must reflect your personality. This will ensure that you feel comfortable and “at home” with the new style. The design of the sofa must be perfect for the whole family. A white sectional sofa will not work very well if you have pets or young children who can easily spill juice or smear chocolate on it. If you are living on your own or the kids are grown up and moved out of the house, then it is safe to go for the white sectional sofa. Be very selective when you buy a modern sectional sofa. Current fads tend to wear off in a year or two, so avoid buying a sofa just because it is in fashion. Try to stick with passive colors and simple designs that will allow you to easily change once the trend passes. By utilizing the advice given you will be able to find the perfect sectional sofa to create a modern look that suites your personality.

The materials used for modern sectional sofas are usually fabric, leather, vinyl, suede, microfiber and microsuede. Some modern sectional sofa sets use a blend of two or more upholstery materials. Modern fabric sectional sofas are perfect for families with young children where the sofa will be exposed to constant dirt and grime. The new fabrics used are treated with a shielding agent such as Scotch Guard or Teflon, making it very easy to clean spills and smears. Red wine can be easily removed with normal soap and water, whereas one part vinegar to one part water will take care of oily and greasy stains. Modern sectional sofas also come with removable covers, making cleaning and caring for your modern sofa even easier. These sectional sofa cover can be washed in your normal washing machine for ultimate convenience. With these durable modern fabrics and sofa covers for your modern sectional sofa, you will be able to enjoy your sofa for many years to come with it still looking brand new. Leather is another great option for your modern sectional sofa. They require a bit more loving attention but the atmosphere it creates is very stylish and comfortable. Your modern leather sectional sofa demands regular dusting and cleaning to ensure that it remains looking and feeling as good as new.

How Often You Should Clean Your Ducts? esearchers are learning more about the quality of indoor air. They are discovering that air in our homes can often be filled with dust and pollutants. As more people learn that indoor air pollution is a health issue of growing concern, they are looking for ways to keep their air clean. One method of improving air quality is cleaning air ducts. Duct cleaning consists of cleaning various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems such as air ducts and registers, grills and diffusers, heat exchangers, heating and cooling coils, drip pans, fan motor, and the air handling unit. Air ducts are susceptible to the following hazards: - Ducts can be infested with vermin such as rodents and insects. Contaminants from their droppings can be blown through the ducts into a home where they may be inhaled. - When there is moisture, bacteria and fungi can grow in air ducts where microorganisms and spors can blow through the home. - Dust, dirt, and oil particles can build up in the ducts and be sent through the home. You should have your ducts cleaned for the following situations: - If you have a problem with moisture in your ducts. If the conditions causing the mold growth in the first place are not corrected, mold growth will recur. - If you are moving into a newly constructed house. There may be construction debris in the ducts such as drywall dust, fiberglass pieces, and sawdust. - If you are having trouble with furnace airflow. - If there is an accumulation of debris in the air registers. Pet dander can often build up in the registers. - If you or a family member are sneezing a lot or you see particles blowing though your vents, it is time to get your ducts cleaned. - If you place your hand over a duct vent

Page 14

and the air flow is not very strong. Cleaning the ducts may restore proper airflow. - If you detect an odour coming from the vents when the air is turned on By having your ducts cleaned, you will improve air quality and reduce the amount of pollen, allergens, mold, and fungi from infecting the air. Not only will air quality be improved, but family member who suffer from asthma will breathe better. People with asthma are extremely sensitive to dust and allergens in the air. Clean air ducts will reduce the chances of family members developing allergies. It will be a much healthier environment for children and pets. Duct cleaning will also reduce energy costs and make it easier to keep the house clean. It is recommended that you have your ducts cleaned every two years. The best time to get your ducts cleaned is in the late summer or early fall. If you have family members that are afflicted with breathing problems, you may want to have your ducts cleaned every year. If you decide to have your ducts cleaned, it important to make sure you have a qualified service provider who cleans all of the components. If your ducts are not properly cleaned, there is an increased chance of recontamination. Service providers will use specialized tools to remove dirt and debris in ducts. They will then vacuum the ducts with a high-powered vacuum cleaner. Many companies are promoting their products and services as a means to improving the quality of your indoor air. Preventing moisture, debris, and dirt from accumulating in your ducts is the best way to reduce the number of indoor air pollutants. By maintaining good quality air, you, your family, and pets will be healthier and breathe much easier.

Winter Birthstones: Bright Colors For Dark Days Winter can be long and dreary. The novelty of the first snow, fresh and white, fades into the fatigue of shoveling your driveway, and that beautiful white blanket of snow turning to gray mushy slush. For those with winter birthdays, you can perk up your day and your wardrobe by wearing your brightly colored birthstone in blue, red, or purple for December, January, and February, respectively. Read on to learn more about winter birthstones. The two blue birthstones for December are turquoise and blue topaz. The blue of turquoise is so unique that the stone has lent its name to the shade. Most people in the US probably associate turquoise with jewelry from Mexico or the southwestern US, in Native American styles, and indeed the US is today the largest producer of turquoise. But it got its name from the French word for Turkish, as Turkey and the surrounding areas was one of the earliest sources of the stone. Chemically it contains copper and other minerals, and is usually found in areas with large copper deposits. Blue topaz is actually not entirely natural, but is topaz made blue by radiation. January’s birthstone is the garnet. Usually thought of as a red color, garnets actually come in just about every hue except blue. This is because garnet is the name given to a group of similar minerals, including rhodolite and hessonite. As is the case with many birthstones, the garnet is the topic of folklore and believed to have special powers of protection or good fortune. Specifically, some believe that Noah used a garnet to light the way for the ark, and today, it is considered a good gem for travelers to grant them safe passage and return. The amethyst, February’s birthstone, is purple, a color associated with royalty, so it is no surprise that it is highly prized, and appears in the British Crown Jewels. While always purple, it can vary from a light violet to a deep purple shade. The Greek word from which amethyst descends literally means not drunk. So, amethysts have been thought since ancient times to preserve sobriety, and in modern times, have come to symbolize assistance to overcome other addictions as well. As a “sober” gem, they also represent piety and have traditionally been worn by priests and other clergy. Don’t hide inside, bring out the colors of bright winter birthstones and make the world a more colorful place. Written by Dana Bradley Article source: http://www.isnare. com/?aid=78464&ca=Culture

hen you are looking to create a themed bedroom around your child’s hobbies and interests, there is one major thing to consider before going forward: How long will this be able to last? Children change their hobbies and interests at the drop of a hat, it is all a part of finding themselves and growing up. But that can mean some headaches if you spend your time and money decorating your child’s room only to find out it is outdated a few months later. If done the right way though, it will last for a long time and the bedroom can grow and change as your child grows too. Balance! You will want to make your child’s bedroom into something that he or she will feel comfortable and safe in. It should inspire your children to spend time in there, go to sleep and stay asleep! No scary shadows in the middle of the night! One of the easiest ways of accomplishing this is to customize the room based on a favourite fantasy. Princess or doll house for girls, the jungle or a plane for boys. Anything goes really as long as it is something your child enjoys and feels comfortable with. But of course, children change and grow and so do their interests. Things can be “in” today, boring tomorrow and completely “out” by the end of the week! Once your children reach a certain age, they will want to get rid of all the ‘baby stuff’ themselves, which is great to see your children develop and grow up. To get that balance between fantasy and something that can last, here are some ideas:

around the room or remove it entirely. If you are budget conscious, one of the worst things you can do is to get a custom wall painting or tappet, as this is permanent until you re-decorate. Better to experiment with the above mentioned, which also give your child the opportunity to be creative and express him or her self. Keep the very age specific topics to one part of the room. An easy solution to do this, is to have a “theme” bed placed in one specific place in the room. That part can then be customised to fit the fantasy, while you keep the rest of the room in a more age neutral style. For furniture the best choice is to go with wood. Wood can easily be repainted to reflect your child’s different tastes and is more durable and far more stylish than plastic. Rugs and mats are also a great cheap way to add personality to a room without making permanent changes, these can also be themed to coordinate with the room. For the bed an easy and affordable solution to creating a fantasy bed is to invest in cheap duvet covers with special themes. These can then be changed as your child grows out of one interest and into another. About the ASuthor: Written by Terry Henman Article source:http://www.isnare.com/?aid=366525&ca=Home+Mana gement

STEAK MARINADES When you are looking to spruce up an otherwise unremarkable steak, one of the best ways to do it is with a steak marinade. Coming in a wide variety of styles and flavors, there are plenty of choices available if you are looking to spruce up a nice steak with something a little different. Whether the flavor takes the form of teriyaki, olive oil, barbeque, or something spicy, there is a steak marinade out there that can make all the difference in your next meal. Using a steak marinade is exceptionally easy. Simply pour the marinade into a large, shallow bowl, plate, or platter and place the steaks in the marinade. Then flip them over and let them soak in the refrigerator for an hour or two. Then cook your steak however you like. With the flavors of the marinade locked into the steak, it will come to life in a way you would have never imagined before. Fortunately, it is not difficult to find a nice variety of sauces to use on your steak. The local grocery store will usually have a variety of steak marinades available and the only problem will be figuring out which one to choose. Whatever you have a taste for on your steak, there is a marinade to match. Once you have tried out a few marinades, you might want to experiment on your own to see what you can create. You may wish to concoct a creation on your own once you have determined just what you enjoy on your own steak. That way, you will be able to have that blend that is just right every time. Another bonus of cooking with a steak marinade is that it allows your steak to be more forgiving. After all, adding a little more flavor never hurt a meal, and soaking meat in a marinade can also make it more tender. Thus, by readying your steak beforehand, the beef will be more tender and will give you a little more

Page 18

leeway in the preparation. After all, you aren’t going to get it on and off the grill perfectly every time, so giving yourself a little more flavor and a little more cushion all at the same time will make for a much easier meal. Overall, a steak marinade can provide a great deal to meal. It adds a little more flexibility to your repertoire, it can give a variety of different flavors to one type of meat, and it makes the cook’s job a little easier when working with the meat on the grill. So, when you want to add a little something to your steak and bring out more flavor in an otherwise routine meal, a marinade can do the trick. It’s very easy, it only takes a little bit of preparation, and the rewards are well worth it. So, the next time you want to do something more with a steak, see what a good steak marinade can do for you. Popcorn Calories: A Good Choice CHICKEN PICATTA INGREDIENTS: • 2 Chicken breasts (skinless) • 1/3 cup Flour • 2 tablespoons Parmesan grated • Salt to taste • 4 tablespoons butter • 4 tablespoons Olive oil • 3 tablespoons Lemon juice • 1/2 cup Chicken broth or white wine • 1/4 cup brined capers • 1/4 cup Parsley chopped

Popcorn is a great option when watching one’s weight. When you are dieting it’s hard to figure out whether the foods you’re consuming are good choices. There are a thousand options in the grocery store. Labels declaring “light food”, “lite food” and after that there’s low-calorie, low-fat food, natural food, nonfat food and organic food. Beyond that, are you getting enough fiber? Enough roughage? It may seem as if iceberg lettuce and carrot sticks are your main courses until eternity. But sneaking in snacks of popcorn are not cheats! Here are some diet-friendly and calorie-friendly reasons why.

has made it very easy for weight-watching or diabetic people to monitor sugar intake without having to sacrifice a snack. It is important to eat popcorn snacks made with Splenda in moderation for two reasons. First, when you are counting calories and dieting, ideally you’d like to make a life change so that you aren’t reaching for junk snacks every time you get the munchies. Try reaching for your favorite fruit instead, it will still take care of the sugar craving. Secondly, low-calorie popcorn snacks and other snacks made with Splenda are loaded with sugar alcohol, which is a laxative. One little bag of tasty low-calorie low-carbohydrate popcorn, and you’ll be sorry for the rest of the day.

Popcorn is a whole-grain food, which makes it a great source of fiber. Unbuttered popcorn is about 50 calories a cup. You can eat popcorn guilt-free with those statistics. Popcorn works fast to curb your hunger between meals. Instead of starvation and fasting, popcorn is a great easy snack that you can eat a large quantity of and not have the scale show you a terrible number the next day.

Popcorn does contain carbohydrates and fat (from the oil used to pop it if you are doing it the old-fashioned way), but they are good carbohydrates and fats to have. Carbohydrates are bad when they come from highly processed, high-calorie and empty-calorie foods like white bread, white processed flour and any sugary snack favorite we have in the cookie aisle. So keep in mind that with all the diet labels that can be rotated around and slapped on your popcorn, it is still a great choice. Light food? Absolutely, light and fluffy and doesn’t sit heavy on you if you’re snacking before a meal. It also meets the above criteria of being low-calorie, low-fat, natural and containing fiber. If you go easy on the butter or skip it altogether, popcorn is a hot, low restriction winner for a dieting regimen.

DIRECTIONS: 1 Cut the chicken breast halves in half horizontally, butterflying them open. If you are working with large breast pieces you may want to cut them each into two pieces. If the pieces are pretty thick still, put them between two pieces of plastic wrap and pound them with a meat hammer to an even 1/4-inch thickness. 2 Mix together the flour, salt and pepper, and grated Parmesan. Rinse the chicken pieces in water and dredge them thoroughly in the flour mixture, until well coated. 3 Heat the olive oil and 2 Tbsp of the butter in a large skillet on medium high heat. Add half of the chicken pieces (you don't want to crowd the pan). Brown well on each side, about 3 minutes per side. Remove from pan and reserve to a plate, cook the other breasts in the same manner, remove from pan. Cover with aluminum foil and keep warm in the oven while preparing the sauce. 4 Add the chicken stock (or white wine), lemon juice, and capers to the pan. Use a metal spatula to scrape up the browned bits. Reduce the sauce by half. Whisk in the remaining 2 Tbsp of butter. Plate the chicken and serve with the sauce poured over the chicken. Sprinkle with parsley.

Unbuttered popcorn is a good staple for a low-calorie diet, but when you want to change it up a little, there are many things you can do to make popcorn an even tastier snack. Cinnamon, brown sugar, soy sauce, garlic and onion salt, iced tea mix, peanuts, raisins and trail mix are all options to make the snack a little sweeter or a little more savory. If you choose not to make your own popcorn snack at home, the grocery store has made eating sweet and smart a little bit easier. You can purchase sugar-free, reduced calorie caramel corn! Artichoke is the common name for a plant of the composite flower family. The artichoke grows wild in the south of Europe and is cultivated in the United States, primarily in California. The leaves proceed from the base of the stem and are long and somewhat spiny. The stem is up to 1 m (3 ft) high, branched, with large heads of violet-colored (sometimes white), thistle-like flowers at the summits of the branches. The thickened receptacle (heart) and fleshy bases of the scales (leaves) of the immature flower are the portions eaten.

Reena Nerbas

Dear Reena, My mother-in law gave me a carbon monoxide detector for Christmas. While I appreciate the thought, are they really necessary or should I trade it in for another smoke detector. She seems a little paranoid to me. Thanks, Otto Dear Otto, Great question! Recent statistics report 113,333 carbon monoxide poisonings each year in the U.S. Carbon monoxide is a silent and dangerous killer and if you do your research you will find that purchasing one or better yet more than one is a very smart choice. Since CO is colorless, tasteless and odorless (unlike smoke from a fire), detection and prevention of carbon monoxide poisoning in a home environment is impossible without such a warning device. Proper placement of a carbon monoxide (CO) detector is important. If you are installing only one carbon monoxide detector, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends it be located near the sleeping area, where it can wake you if you are asleep. Additional detectors on every level and in every bedroom of a home provide extra protection against carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not to install carbon monoxide detectors directly above or beside fuel-burning appliances, as appliances may emit a small amount of carbon monoxide upon start-up. A detector should not be placed within fifteen feet of heating or cooking appliances or in or near very humid areas such as bathrooms. Also available on the market are smoke and carbon monoxide combination detectors. In other words, the choice to install carbon monoxide detectors in your home can save your life; your mother-in law deserves a pat on the back (and perhaps a boxof chocolates). Dear Reena, What is the best way to transport food for potluck dinners? I made a casserole for my friend and by the time I arrived at her home, half of it had spilt onto my car mats. Also, do you have any suggestions about how to decide on a good potluck dish? Thank-you, Betty Dear Betty, When choosing a potluck dish pick something that won’t deteriorate if it has to sit for awhile at room temperature (or pose a threat of food poisoning). In other words, keep cold foods cold (40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder). Keep hot foods hot. If the dish needs to be warm, consider transporting it in a slow cooker or choose something that can be reheated in the microwave. If you’ve made something in a casserole dish with a lid, remove it from the oven where it’s been cooking, secure the lid and wrap the covered dish in several thicknesses of newspaper and put it in a snug-fitting box, cover the box with a heavy towel. Or use a cooler. They are insulated and, while most commonly used to keep things cold, can also be used to keep things hot. Pack right before you leave and don’t open until serving time. If you’re dealing with a crumb crust, invert an empty pie plate on top of the pie, then wrap a large sheet of foil around the two plates to hold them together. If you’re dealing with a fluted

crust, place a piece of double-stick foam tape on a baking sheet, place the pie on top, invert a large bowl over it, then tape the bowl in place. Note: If you won’t be able keep food adequately hot or cold, serve items such as dried fruit, nuts, peanut butter sandwiches, apples and bananas. Extra tip: If you have extra address labels kicking around the house, apply them to the bottom of dishes before taking them to potluck gatherings. After the empty dishes are returned, soak the label with a small amount of cooking oil, then wash off with dish soap and water. Hello Reena, This is a question that I am too embarrassed to ask any of my family members. When eating a mango, do you eat the peel? Also, what is the easiest way to peel a pomegranate? Lastly, what is dragon fruit? Happy New Year, Melanie

No problem Melanie, To eat or not to eat, that is the question. When it comes to mangos the peels are chewy and tough therefore most people (not all) discard the peel and dive into the juicy inside of the mango. Purchase pomegranates while you can, the season will soon be over. The fastest way to seed a pomegranate is to cut the fruit in half. Fill a bowl with cold water and break the pomegranate apart underwater. Rub seeds out with your thumb. The papery membrane will float to the top and the seeds sink to the bottom. Scoop out the seeds and eat them. Talk about healthy! The pitaya is more commonly referred to as the dragon fruit and is usually a dark red color, although some types of this fruit are pink or yellow. The skin is usually covered in scales, and the center of the fruit is made up of a red or white, sweet tasting pulp (looks kind of like white kiwi on the inside). The dragon fruit is best eaten by cutting the fruit in half and scooping the flesh out. Why not make a New Years resolution to try a new fruit once a month? Remember it takes at least 20 trials to acquire a taste for something unfamiliar.

Stress isn’t

always bad (NC)—Dr.

Hans Selye, a Canadian researcher and the father of modern stress research, suggests that stress is not necessarily a bad thing. He explains that it is not the “stressor” - the thing that causes stress - that determines the response, both physical and mental. An individual’s reaction to stress determines how bad or good a stressful experience will be. In his book The Stress of Life, Selye explains: “No one can live without experiencing some degree of stress all the time. You may think that only serious disease or intensive physical or mental injury can cause stress. This is false. Crossing a busy intersection, exposure to a draft, or even sheer joy are enough to activate the body’s stress mechanisms to some extent. Stress is not even necessarily bad for you; it is also the spice of life, for any emotion, any activity causes stress. But, of course, your system must be prepared to take it. The same stress which makes one person sick can be an invigorating experience for another.” Effective, healthy ways to prepare for or manage stress management include: • Techniques to calm the mind and promote a positive mental attitude. • A healthy lifestyle, including regular physical exercise.

• Key dietary and botanical supplements that support health and immunity. Technically speaking a stressor can be almost any disturbance to the body or emotions that triggers a number of biological changes producing the “stress response”. A healthy body has effective methods of counteracting everyday stresses, but if stress is extreme, unusual, or long-lasting, these control mechanisms can be over-whelmed and serious health issues can result. Expect to feel “stressed out” if your diet isn’t the best. Your body needs certain key nutrients to reduce physical and mental reactions to stressful situations. Experts recommend getting enough B vitamins, especially B5, B6, B12 and folic acid (a balanced stress formula of Bs, like B-Calm, is most convenient), omega-3 fatty acids (Omega-3s improve brain function and mood), healthy protein (insufficient protein can starve your body), and a good multivitamin/multimineral to prevent nutrient deficiencies. To boost your ability to handle and even enjoy the stresses of life, eat well, get plenty of sleep and exercise and give your body the nutrients it needs to face another day. newscanada www.newscanada.com

New Year

2010 resolution:

Eat breakfast, lose weight! (NC)—Mom

told you breakfast was the most important meal of the day and she was right! You may think that skipping meals would help you lose weight, but research suggests the opposite. Skipping meals may actually promote weight gain and some research indicates that people who skip breakfast are much more likely to have weight problems than those who don’t. So think about what gets in the way of a healthy breakfast. Here are two common roadblocks and some tips to overcome them:

Breakfast Roadblock #1… Not enough time. For those who seem to never have enough time in the morning for breakfast, the key is to keep quick, easy breakfast choices available. A great breakfast includes foods from three of Canada’s Food Guide food groups – especially a whole grain, such as Multi-Grain Cheerios, some fruit or fruit juice and a protein food like milk, yogurt, peanut butter or some nuts. These kinds of foods will give your body the energy it needs after fasting all night and keep you satisfied well into the morning. And if you’re watching your weight, it’s good to know that people who enjoy lots of whole grains tend to have healthier body weights than those who don’t. You can learn more about the benefits of whole grains at www.areyougettingenough.ca. Breakfast Roadblock #2…No appetite for breakfast. If you’re not a big fan of eating soon after you wake up you can wait a little while, but don’t postpone it too long. If this means you need to eat breakfast during your morning commute to work, plan a breakfast you can eat on the way such as an individual size yogurt, a juice box and a portable container with whole grain cereal to munch on. Running to catch the bus? Here is a recipe for jumbo breakfast cookies or bars you can munch on the way! Make these on the weekend when you have a few more minutes to spare so you’ll be able to grab them on weekday mornings as you head out the door. CHEERIOS BREAKFAST BARS OR COOKIESINGREDIENTS: 1 1/4 cups (300 mL) sugar 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter or margarine, softened

1/4 cup (50 mL) water 1 tbsp (15 mL) vanilla 1 egg 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) all-purpose or whole wheat flour 1 cup (250 mL) old fashioned or quick cooking oats 1 cup (250 mL) raisins 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each baking soda and salt 4 cups (1 L) Cheerios* cereal Method: 1. Heat oven to 375°F (190°C). Stir together sugar, butter, peanut butter, water, vanilla, and egg in a large bowl. 2. Stir in remaining ingredients except cereal. Gently stir in cereal. 3. Pour into ungreased 9x13-inch (23x33 cm) rectangular pan. 4. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool. Cut into bars. Makes: 24 2-inch (5 cm) bars/cookies Tip: To Make Breakfast Cookies: Make dough as directed above and drop by rounded 1/3 cupfuls (75 mL) 4-inches (10 cm) apart onto ungreased large baking sheet. Flatten dough to about 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick. Bake 11 to 13 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes before removing from baking sheets. The along with the wheel, the light bulb is one of the worlds’ most important inventions and if you like seeing at night more than driving, then you will no doubt view the light bulb without question as THE most important. The light bulb as we know it today is a product of the work of more than 10 notable inventors from Germany, the UK and the USA over a period of 182 years. It all started with an English Chemist, Sir Humphry Davy in 1809 who noticed that by passing electricity from a battery though a carbon strip, it glowed. This was the making of the first arc lamp. Humphry died in 1829, around one hundred and twenty years before seeing the light bulbs he was so instrumental in inventing, light up the trenches of World War 2. About 11 years after Davy, another English inventor, Warren De la Rue created a light tube by passing an electrical current though a platinum filament contained in an evacuated tube. While a successful model, this was highly impractical for widespread use due to the cost of the platinum filament. In 1854, all hats in the light bulb community were off in the direction of Germany. Henricg Globel, who by profession was a watchmaker created the first true light bulb, using a carbonised bamboo filament placed in a glass bulb. The term ‘globe’ in ‘globe light bulbs’ could have possibly been named after Henricg, although I am not at liberty to say. Another German, Herman Sprengel provided another breakthrough, inventing the mercury vacuum pump making a strong vacuum inside the bulb possible. This allows a longer life light bulb as it removes the effects of oxidation on the filament. The most famous of all the inventors who had a hand in the development of the

Issue #2V3- Jan. 14/10

Light Bulb and often (wrongly) handed the crown of inventing the light bulb is the American inventor Thomas Alva Edison who went on to pioneer other notable inventions such as the phonograph and the kinetophone (talking motion picture). For involvement in the development of the light bulb he invented a carbon filament that burned for 40hrs which he put in an oxygen-less bulb. By 1880 he had managed to extend the life of his bulb to over 1200 hours using a bamboo derived filament. Tungsten popped its head into the light bulb world in 1906 when the General Electric company of America patented their use. At the time however, these filaments were costly.

In 1910, an American Physicist by the name of William David Coolidge (or William to his friends) came up with an improved method of making the tungsten filaments. His improved method greatly extended the life of existing filaments and made them much more economical. The light bulb as we know it was made and continues to light up the dark nights In 1991 Phillips invented a light bulb capable of over 60,000 hours. That’s almost 7 full years of illumination. Even more if you switch it off when you go to bed. About the Author: Written by Rodney Munch Article source: http://www.isnare.com/?ai d=380647&ca=Home+Management

JOKE OF THE WEEK Hey Jason I have to tell you about my night on New Years, on New Year’s Eve, I was in no shape to drive, so I sensibly left my van in the car park and walked home. As I was wobbling along, I was stopped by a police officer. ‘What are you doing out here at four o’clock in the morning?’ asked the police officer. ‘I’m on my way to a lecture,’ I answered . ‘And who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at this time on New Year’s Eve?’ enquired the constable sarcastically. ‘My wife,’ I slurred .

The “Super Cars” Of Earlier 60’s and 70’s

Muscle car is a term used to refer automobiles that have high performance. This term was generally referred for cars of American, Australian and South African models of the earlier 1960s and 1970s. A muscle car generally describes a car with 2-doors rear wheel drive and normally is mid size. This car has a large and powerful V8 engine and special trim. This trim helps in achieving maximum torque on the streets and in racing competitions. Muscle cars were entirely different from small sport cars. Muscle cars were called the “super cars” of the time. They were very popular in racing the quarter mile which was their performance standard. Some of the popular muscle cars were Chevelle, Camaro, Nova, Road Runner and Cuda. Among these cars some of the fastest muscle cars were Road Runners, Chevelles and Chargers. These were called family cruisers. The power of these cars lied in their engine design. Men for their transportation used Camaros and Cudas, and initially these cars were sport cars. The Chrysler line of muscle cars was affectionately called the Mopar muscle car. These Mopar powered cars were a favorite of the muscle car owners because of their sleek design and the famous Hemi engine.

impressive in performance, they also came with a transmission controlled vacuum spark. This Chevelle SS454 was a powerful car that acquired a speed of 107mph in 13.12 seconds. It came with a 4 speed, 450 hp vehicle with 454LS6 engine. 1969 Camaro This car was number 6 in ranking when compared to other speedsters. The Camaro that was tested acquired a speed of 100mph in 13.12 seconds. And its engine was 427 ZL1. It came with a 430-horse engine. It also included a 4 speed manual transmission. 1968 and 1969 Charger A 1968 charger tested at a speed of 105mph and it acquired that speed in 13.50 seconds. The engine in this car was a 426 Hemi and it had an automatic transmission. The Hemi was

The Chevelle SS line of muscle cars from Chevrolet was also a sleek designed “Super Car” with the huge 454 cubic inch engine it fast became a favorite for muscle car owners. 1969 Road Runner This car was ranked 3 in muscle car category. 1970 Cuda It was 4 in ranking. Performance of this car was quite pleasing and most of the people liked its body style. It achieved a speed of 107mph in 13.10 seconds and its engine type was a 426 Hemi. Horsepower of this car was around 425; it was available in a 4 speed manual.

Tread Design Differences Modern winter tires are designed to have a tread that can maintain a more comfortable and quieter ride compare to their predecessors. Its circumferential grooves were made wider in order to efficiently drain water and expel snow at the same time. In addition, the grooves on the winter tires are made to be about 25% - 35% deeper than that of normal tires and thus provide better grip. It has a groove shape and special lug that allows more snow to be packed into the thread and expelled as it rotates for deep snow traction. It also has a high density and sophisticated spine design that help cut through the water in order for the tread compound to make a better contact with the road. It even has a rounder casing design to add traction by cutting into the snow surface.

Winter tires are designed for snow, cold, slush and icy weather conditions. They are essentially specialized tires that are designed to be used in the winter season whereas all season tires are meant for used in most conditions. Some myths to dispel: there are car owners out there who are under the impression that the all season tires of today are so good and can deliver the same performance as the winter tires, and that winter tires are only meant for cars moving in snow clad, mountainous parts of planet earth, these assumptions cannot be further from the truth. In particular, winter tires are made of superior rubber compound that have better traction compared to all season tires, and are designed to do well in cold temperature conditions. Special tread compounds are used in winter tires to improve traction. For some winter tires, soft studs tread fibers bite like metal studs are used and yet these compounds do not harm the road. The rubber’s flexibility is retained even when the temperature goes up to zero degrees. Having a more flexible (= rubbery / pliable) tread surface means having more control and traction. The winter tires have silica-based, micro pore compounds that is used to ‘bite’ through the water film and increases the traction in the ice and snow. All season tires have a different compound in which they have a average compound that provide good traction and better delivery in a wide range of road conditions. However, when temperature reaches below forty-five degrees Fahrenheit, the traction decreases. This is the point where all-season tire compounds begin to lose traction because it begins to harden.

Page 46

Conversely, all season type tires have different features. Its shoulder blocks and groove designs were compromise in order to meet the wear and cornering requirements of all season traction. It is less aggressive in terms of traction and is designed to deliver more comfortable ride. As a result of its design, it does not pack nor expel snow as effectively as winter tire does. Flatter tread designs of all season tire enhances a dry traction but does not cut into snow effectively. Furthermore, all season tires perform effectively for the whole year, catering to both dry and wet driving on the road as compared to winter snow tires that are designed only to perform effectively during winter. Conclusion Winter tires are more sophisticated than what most common people think - and as mentioned, today’s winter tires are more advanced and much quieter than their predecessors. Winter tires exist for good reasons are important for you to have them installed for safer journeys on snow and ice. Do not rule them out as marketing gimmicks by the tire companies - winter tires are definitely a necessity and a good form of safety insurance that you want to have in place for yourself and your family - they are worth their money. Do note that while you are using your winter tires, your all season tires are not used - thus there isn’t any wear and tear caused, and you will ‘save’ some mileage and therefore savings there. Remember, all season tires can never be the substitute for winter tires, winter tires are the only tires that will give you the desired traction for your vehicle during the winter season. Make sure you use the correct set of tires to match the requirements of different road and weather conditions. Drive Safe. The Limousine:

There are cars you use to go to the office, to bring your kids to school or to go grocery shopping. And then there’s the limousine. There’s a reason why car dealerships offering shiny limousines are a dime a dozen, or why the Internet is filled with companies offering limo and luxury car rental in Atlanta , New York and every other city in the world: it’s that the sleek, elongated cars are the ultimate status symbol. Some may crave the thrill and excitement a Formula 1 car brings, but when a man wants to exude power, confidence and luxury, it is still ultimately the limousine that he comes back to. What self-respecting rock star would arrive in a red carpet event in anything less than the best limousine available? How can a head of state expect to demonstrate his power if he doesn’t come to a state meeting in a long black stretch car?

The limousine had quite humble beginnings. Far from the glamorous and luxurious world it is now associated today, the limousine was actually named after a humble large cloak used by shepherds of the French province Limousin. The term “limousine” came to be associated with an automobile sometime in the end of the 19th century and by the early 1900s, a “limousine” was understood to be a covered automobile powered by gasoline. The limousine started rising to the top of the car hierarchy in the 1920s when the first “stretch limousine” was produced by Arkansas-based coach company Armbruster. Big bands and orchestras started using these oversized vehicles as their main means of transportation when they toured the United States (they were very useful for carrying instruments), thus establishing the first “link” between the music industry and the vehicle (now a favorite of rock and pop stars alike).

Page 54

The Rise Of A Status Symbol Soon, Hollywood too discovered not just effective the roomy limousine is when transporting film equipment and props, but also how glamorous and comfortable they can be. By the 1940s, the limousine has become the IT car of Tinsel Town and everyone who was anyone was riding in one. At the same time as it was gaining popularity among the golden men and women of Hollywood, the limousine has also turned the world’s political leaders, particularly, American presidents, into fans. Harry Truman, Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower for example, all rode 21.5 feet long Cadillac convertibles. During the 60s and the 70s, the limousine’s reputation as the rich and the powerful’s vehicle of choice was cemented. Many would tell you, that the limousine’s popularity, its rise as a status symbol, could be attributed solely to the vehicle’s features. It’s roomy interior offers passengers with comfort while traveling- a feature the privileged expects and demands. In the early years of the automobile when most cars were open and its passengers were exposed, the limousine’s covering provided passengers not only with added security but also privacy. Simply put, the limousine just screams luxury, privilege and style. Want further proof that testifies to the limousine’s lavish and extravagant nature? Vehicle etiquette dictates that a limousine can only be driven by a professional chauffeur and never by the owner, whose main and only task is to enjoy the ride and bask in the car’s luxury and opulence. Now, does any other kind of car have this kind of “rule”? About the Author: Written by Sheryll Cross Article source: http://www.isnare.com/?aid=211898&ca=Automotive

You think it gets cold here in Saskatchewan? The confirmed coldest temperature on Earth was recorded in Vostok, Antarctica at a brisk -89.2 degrees Celsius (183 Kelvin). Vostok's elevation is almost 3500 meters above sea level, and due to the density of oxygen being less towards the poles, the scientists are working at an effective height of 5000 meters above sea level. Why would we journey to such an inviting place you might wonder? Vostok is located 1300 kilometers from the true South Pole, but is very near the Magnetic South Pole. Scientists study actinometry; the measure of solar radiation in photons, geophysics; the study of the physical properties of the Earth, mainly electrical, gravitational and magnetic forces which also includes seismology, and climatology; the study of weather systems.
