They were not like any I’d seen – raving about the staff and Jody’s way of being more like a partner in your business than just an advertising publication. Jody met with me soon after I called. She listened to my goals and concerns, and then shared her thoughts and expertise with regard to what might be most effective for my unique business. I cannot say enough about what an asset Jody and her magazines are to our communities and businesses." - Catherine Darras, Catherine Darras Hypnotherapy, San Juan Capistrano "With many options when investing my advertising dollars, I decided to interview and research the local publications before I made a decision. After several interviews, it was clear we would put our trust into Jody and South County Magazine. Jody is a delight to work with, giving above and beyond professionalism and attention to detail. I feel she truly cares about the success of my ad and my business. Thank you Jody, South County Magazine is the best!" - Mary McPherson, Awoken Life Brain Wave Optimization, San Juan Capistrano "Our company recently started advertising in South County Magazine and we have already received a great return on our investment! There are obviously many options when deciding where to place your marketing dollars, but for my money, I'm very happy to be partnered with a publication run by people who truly care about helping my business grow. Jody and her team worked with me to develop a campaign that would maximize my exposure to new customers and generate the best possible results. Thank you from all of us here at The Other Guys." - David Marzluf, The Other Guys Awning & Tint Specialists JUNE 2015

So if just reading this article is stressing you out or you can at all relate, Dr. Petersen can help! Following a complete exam and report of findings, Dr. Petersen will perform adjustments that will align the spine,

Healing & Feeling Less Stress by Kimmie Petersen oday we are doing more than ever before. Life is busy. Life is complex. We are cramming as much as we possibly can into each waking hour. Work days are longer for most and with technology, many are working from home even after their work day should be done. Our children are over scheduled with activities and many adults are simply trying to keep up. On top of these jam packed schedules, many are not getting adequate sleep each night. In fact, a 2013 Gallup Poll showed that a whopping 40% of Americans do not get the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep each night.

T

So, what exactly does all of this lead to? Have you ever felt your heart rate speed up when you're racing your child to soccer practice or trying to get to an office meeting on time? Chances are that your patience is shorter the busier you are, which could interfere with your relationships. Things are also more expensive and even buying organic can be a hard hit on your budget. It is no wonder that the main complaint we hear from patients is that they are under too much STRESS. Too many things to do, too much on their minds.

To add more to the mix, did you know that when you have spinal misalignment, that puts MORE STRESS on your nervous system and your body cannot perform at its best? Stress also affects the parasympathetic nerves (PSN). The question most patients ask is “How do I stop being so stressed?” Well, unless you’re going to call in sick and hide under your covers (trust me, we’ve all had those days), it’s probably a good idea to understand how stress is actually affecting your body and mood instead of just letting it get the best of you. It is also important to note that there are actually four types of stress: enviromental (noise, weather, etc.), physical (injury/pain), emotional and chemical (environmental toxins, & drugs). Chances are if you’re stressed, it’s probably a bit of all four.

To add more to the mix, did you know that when you have spinal misalignment, that puts MORE STRESS on your nervous system and your body cannot perform at its best? Stress also affects the parasympathetic nerves. These nerves-when in an optimal state controls the immune system, digestive system, slows the heart rate and decreases blood pressure. Yet another effect of chronic nerve stress is prolonged muscle contraction and tension. This muscle tension creates uneven pressures on the bony structures of the body, often leading the further misalignment of the spinal column. So if just reading this article is stressing you out or you can at all relate, Dr. Petersen can help! Following a complete exam and report of findings, Dr. Petersen will perform adjustments that will align the spine, releasing muscle tension, which will help the body return to a more balanced, relaxed state. These adjustments reduce spinal nerve irritation, and may be enough, in many cases, to convince the brain to turn off the fight or flight response, beginning the process of HEALING & feeling LESS STRESS. You will also receive relaxation techniques to use at home and nutritional supplement advice. Dr. Petersen feels that the body can heal itself if given the right tools and treated with excellent care. Dr. Petersen’s office also offers massage therapy & many insurance companies are paying for this preventative care so it can be quite affordable! Give us a call today and we will put you on a path towards a stress free life or at least Dr. Petersen will be able to dramatically decrease your stress with innovative Chiropractic care. You deserve peace-yes YOU! As always, wishing you wellness.

Dr. Petersen can be reached by calling (949) 388-1432 or visit Sycamore Chiropractic at 31461 Rancho Viejo Road, Suite 103 in San Juan Capistrano. We truly look forward to meeting you and assisting you in a more positive, pain & stress free life! JUNE 2015

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”

ReelTime Sight & Sound breaking free from the big box for your perfect home theater system by Betsy Sanz • cover photography by Melisa Chandler, Chandler Photography hen you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, did you plot your perfect flat screen location and find that the outlets were placed at exactly the right distance, with the perfect electrical scenario for everything you wanted to do? Could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?

Skip opened the doors at ReelTime Sight & Sound in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime Sight & Sound employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision. There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system. “You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.” Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process. “You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.” It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime Sight & Sound is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

Yeah, neither did I. Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do. If you want the home theater system that you envision, you need Skip Myers of ReelTime Sight & Sound, the guy you can lean on to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams. “Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of forty years in the

The Beveled Edge by Jody Robinson

ho would have thought such a (relatively) small change could completely transform the look and curb appeal of a home? In just a few hours and for less than the price of a new entry door system, Norton and Vicki Canterbury, owners of The Beveled Edge, start with a homeowner’s existing door, cut out a portion and insert custom art beveled glass panels.

W

and Vicki are “fully involved” in every job, working directly with each client to “make certain we create the vision they desire for their home.”

According to Norton, the collaborative design process includes the creation of full-scale templates for review by the client and glass selection, which may include just bevels and clear textured glass or full color. The privacy level that each customer desires in their leaded glass panels is discussed and impleAFTER mented.

What was once a solid surface is now a stunning entry defined by light, beauty and instant curb appeal. The San Juan Capistrano studio, showroom and manufacturing facility specializes in the aforementioned front door remodels, as well as interior doors and cabinet doors. “Any door, whether wood, metal or fiberglass, can be transformed into a functional work of art,” says Norton. “The Beveled Edge also offers custom etched glass, architectural glass, and heavy glass table tops.” A former Marine, Norton has honed his craft for the past quarter century – starting with an apprenticeship at a stained glass studio in 1983, followed by the launch of his own business three years later in San Clemente and culminating in his current location complete with a showroom and manufacturing facilities. Rich and Linette may not serve drinks poolside, but then again, with their 5-star customer service, maybe you just need to ask. Think of the possibilities – all because you made the decision to turn your backyard into the kind of relaxing place you’ve always dreamed of.

We’d hate to make them blush, but we’ve got to get the word out about what Rich and Linette do when they aren’t creating the backyard dreams for others. Since 1994, this husband-and-wife team have been part of “Men and Women of Action,” a volunteer construction and disaster organization. While still managing the family business, they’ve helped re-build homes, build schools, churches and medical clinics all over the world – from domestic locales like New Orleans after Katrina to Zambia, Brazil, Romania, Honduras and the Philippines. “This is our meaningful passion,” says Rich, who recently completed a couple of projects closer to home: A school in Fresno, church in Ontario and rebuilt the home of a pastor in McFarland, California whose home burned down due to arson.

The fantasy is easy enough - but where do you begin? How do you know where to start? That’s where Rich and Linette Tonti, owners of Pacific Paradise Pools, come in. They’ve been transforming people’s lives for over 25 years. They do everything from elegant Romanesque to the rock scape resort that families would vacation for. “Our mission is to help homeowners enjoy their pools and to maximize the fun in their backyards,” says Rich. “I am proud to say that we have some of the most professional, experienced and polite customer service staff in the pool and spa industry.” If you’ve got a worn out swimming pool that's been neglected or ready for a makeover, don’t worry, they also do major pool renovations. Rich, Linette and the Pacific Paradise Pools team strive to go above and beyond to ensure their customers are satisfied. They also work with professional designers and landscape architects to ensure you get the full HGTV effect. “We aim to please and make sure that we develop an outdoor living space that will compliment your home’s personality as well as provide years of enjoyment,” says Rich. They’re not the bragging type, but the truth is the Huntington Beach-founded and Fountain Valley-based business is an international award-winning builder, and has been honored on

“We decided when we met the pastor to help his family,” says Rich. “He ministers to a poor agricultural community, and we felt there was a great need." Together, the couple volunteer 10 to 20 hours a week stateside, and spend at least two weeks a year volunteering overseas. “We were both raised in Huntington Beach,” says Linette. “I graduated from Marina High School and Rich from Huntington Beach High School so it’s also especially nice when we have the opportunity to give back in our own community. We now have roots with our home church, Living Waters, in Fountain Valley and our youngest daughter is now a Baron at Fountain Valley High School so we see old friends almost every day in the community we serve.”

What to Look for When Hiring a Remodeling Contractor

Ask the contractor how many jobs, conservatively speaking, he completes each month. If he says four, then ask for at least 12 references for work completed in the last six to nine months. This is less than half the jobs completed in that period of time if his number is accurate, and is a large enough reference pool to demonstrate a pattern of pleasing clients. If he is unwilling or unable to provide such a list then he either exaggerated the amount of work he does or he doesn’t consistently satisfy clients. Tuttle’s Carpet One Floor and Home by Jody Robinson any local businesses boast great customer testimonials of recent transactions, but few can credit true “relationships” with clients dating back 50+ years.

M

Because expert installation is so important, Kevin and Mary Gail only work with highly trained professionals who can install complex jobs and handle high-quality materials.

Kevin and MaryGail Hentzen, owners of the Laguna Niguel-based Tuttle’s Carpet One Floor and Home, have had clients bring in their old invoices from carpet installations in the 1960s.

The company’s growth in more recent history can be traced to Kevin’s decision to move the operation to a more visible location Laguna Niguel in 1994. In addition to enjoying increased foot traffic, Kevin joined Carpet One two years later, which lent itself to capturing even more market share – for a variety of reasons. Carpet One is a co-operative that has over 1,000 stores worldwide. Although all are independently owned and operated, because they are a co-op, Carpet One can negotiate the best prices and warranties as a large group. For example, Carpet One offers “the Beautiful Guaranty” which allows the customer up to 120 days from installation to have the carpet replaced for ANY reason (even if they decide they don’t like the color). The carpet and the labor are covered. No questions asked.

Back then, the store was located in Laguna Beach and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Tuttle. In 1980, the Hentzen family purchased the business and young Kevin took over its dayto-day operations, working alongside his father, Gene. Under the elder Hentzen’s tutelage for the following decade, Kevin honed his skills by learning the intricacies of all aspects of the flooring industry. Today, Kevin brings more than 30 years of expertise to every job. His wife, Mary Gail, specializes in window coverings and with years of experience in their own right, staff design consultants Cathi, Nancy and Lori round out the Tuttle’s Carpet One team. “Much of our business is from customers that I’ve known for years. It is more of a relationship with the client,” says Kevin. “People enjoy the personal experience that you won’t find in a big box store. It is very rewarding to beautify people’s homes. It’s a great feeling when the client calls to say how much they love their new floor.” Tuttle’s Carpet One specializes in all types of carpet, hardwood flooring, tile, stone, area rugs, vinyl and window coverings. They carry top brands such as Karastan, Masland, Lees, Armstrong, and Hunter Douglas and offer the largest wool carpet selection in Orange County.

Another offer that only Carpet One offers is the “Healthy Living Installation.” This is a process that cleans the sub-floor with a HEPI-VAC and the installers then spray the subfloor with Healthinex anti bacterial spray. Then they use a special carpet cushion that minimizes symptoms from mold, mildew, allergens and pollens. The bottom line is that Tuttle’s Carpet One Floor and Home offers the great advantage of the buying power as a group while still retaining the independence and specialty of a small store.

Because Jose worked his way up through the ranks to become maintenance and distribution manager for CBM Carpet Cleaning and Handyman Service and eventually took over as the company’s operations manager, he has firsthand experience in every facet of the industry. As CBM grew, Jose received continual ongoing education training and earned his certification in order to be able to hire and personally train the company’s technicians and worked alongside several flooring franchisees in the testing of products. By 2012, Jose was spending much of his time on the road overseeing installations and restorations and wanted to work closer to home to spend more time with his family and Total Floor Care was born.

One of the perks of publishing South County Magazine is that I am provided a venue to share with our readership personal experiences with local business owners like Jose Bautista, owner of the (CITY NAME HERE) Total Floor Care. Jose helped restore our granite kitchen countertop to like-new condition (after someone who shall remain nameless left a can of cleaner on top of the counter long enough for the chemicals to mar the surface with a glaring white ring). When we moved into our new home a few months ago, we called Jose again – this time to see if he could work his magic in restoring the dull marble and travertine flooring in our entryway and master bathroom.

For Jose Bautista, owning and operating his own business is a true “family affair.” What started as a part-time position at his brother’s tile and carpet cleaning company nearly two decades ago has evolved into his own thriving business serving all of Orange County’s stone and granite repair needs.

“With proper care, we can extend the life of your flooring investment,” says Jose. “I pride myself on customer service and believe that’s what sets Total Floor Care apart. I provide free demos to ensure there’s a clear understanding of expectations. I also provide multiple options to customers and try to educate them on proper maintenance And again, his work more than exceeded our expectations – the results were such a dramatic improvement after the floors have been cleaned and we can’t speak highly enough of the care and time he put into the projects … you would have thought or restored. he was restoring stone in his own home. “I don’t leave until the job is well For Jose Bautista, owning and operating his own business is a true “family affair.” What started as a part- done and the customer is happy time position at his brother’s tile and carpet cleaning company nearly two decades ago has evolved into with the results. Big or small, every job is important to me.” his own thriving business serving all of Orange County’s stone and granite repair needs.

Happy 50th Anniversary Medicare! by Stephanie Frisch by the American public, but it’s not. Unless the federal government starts enforcing a mandatory educational course to attend and a test to pass to receive Medicare benefits, it very likely never will be.

Most people don’t realize the age of the Medicare program. It was first launched in 1965 along with Medicaid, with the first full year of enrollment being 1966.

This is why I think it’s important to take an educational approach when meeting with someone new to Medicare, someone that has only carried original Medicare due to lack of understanding of the risk of doing so, or an existing beneficiary that just enrolled in the first plan they looked without really understand what Medicare is all about. One of the best places to get an education about Medicare if you don’t meet with me is Medicare.gov.

Think back to what our world was like in 1965: The average life expectancy was 70.2 years, average cost of a new home was $23,300 and the price of a gallon of gas was .32 cents. So much has changed since then, but one thing has remained consistent for fifty years: Very few people understand the Medicare program.

This is a website dedicated to all things Medicare! It’s where I go when I don’t know the answer to my clients’ questions. Yes there is a lot of information there, and yes it can be overwhelming. But, if you just read a section at a time, starting around age 60 or so, I believe you could fully understand Medicare by the time 65 rolls around.

Now, you would think that a nationwide insurance program that’s been around for 50 years would be well understood

Or, you could just schedule an appointment with me, remember, my services are free.

Stephanie Frisch is the owner of Insurance 101 and is an independent insurance broker dedicated to helping others make “educated decisions” about their insurance choices when it comes to Medicare, Long-Term Care Planning, The Health Insurance Marketplace-Covered California and Life Insurance. Another key item used for diagnosis are the Stages of Sleep. Ideally it is good to have at least 20% REM Sleep. You may have heard of this, it stands for Rapid Eye Movement. This is the stage of Sleep were dreaming takes place, the mind's organization of memories, and retention of learning. You also need to have about 20% N-3 Sleep, or what is called "Restorative Sleep." This is when you get some real rest, at the same time growth hormones are released while your body is repairing itself. I very often see studies where nearly all Sleep is N-1 and N-2 Sleep, which I call "Junk Sleep." As with "Junk Food" - no real benefits come from it.

Understanding Sleep Apnea by Scott E. West, D.D.S., F.A.G.D. Diplomat of the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorder Disciplines

R

ecently in the media there has been a lot of buzz about Sleep Apnea. I would like to clear up some of the mystery surrounding this important medical issue and hopefully leave you with a better understanding as to cause, steps to treatment, and better health.

If it is found you have Sleep Apnea, your doctor will recommend CPAP therapy. CPAP stands for "Continuous Positive Air Pressure." It is a mask which fits over the mouth and nose, or nose only. It delivers air at a certain pressure to prevent the collapse of the airway. However, over 50 percent of those patients who know they should wear the mask either can't wear it or simply won't. So what can you do to get a better night's sleep? Find a dentist that has a good background in treating Sleep Apnea patients with "Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT)." OAT is the best alternative to the CPAP. And unlike the CPAP mask, compliance is over 95%.

So, let's review the symptoms of Sleep Apnea. 1. Waking up with a very dry or sore throat 2. Loud snoring 3. Waking with a choking or gasping sensation 4. Sleepiness or lack of energy during the day 5. Sleepiness while driving 6. Morning headaches 7. A restless sleep pattern 8. Forgetfulness, mood changes, and decreased interest in sex

Next, what are the medical effects caused by Sleep Apnea? 1. Hypertension 2. Heart Disease 3. Stroke 4. Depression 5. Diabetes 6. Alzheimer's Disease 7. Again, forgetfulness, mood changes, and decreased interest in sex 8. Premature Death

The following are some pointers for finding the right dentist. Has he worked closely with the Sleep Centers and medical doctors in the community? Is he able to interpret your Sleep Study, analyze your situation, and make an appliance customized to your needs? How many years has he been making Sleep Appliances? Does he work with more than one type of Appliance? And, what is his success rate? Finally, is he a Medicare provider with a staff knowledgeable in both Medicare and Medical Insurance? Essentially, treating Sleep Apnea properly will make a huge impact on your life. Don't wait any longer, call today!

If you are regularly experiencing any of these symptoms, see your doctor! Let him know how you're doing and ask about Sleep Apnea. Your physician will most likely suggest a Sleep Study. Here they collect all the data needed for diagnosis and answer some very important questions. The study will determine if you have Sleep Apnea, and if so, how severe (number of events per hour which are closing off your airway). The scale goes, 0-5 events per hour is normal, 5-15 is considered mild, 1530 moderate, and 30 and above severe. If you are having over 5 events per hour, treatment is recommended.

Yoga and Your Faith by Nicole Howard and Cara Fraser “Does yoga go against my faith?” If you are strong in your beliefs this is an important question to ask. We get asked it often here at APC. Our philosophy is that a healthy mind, body and spirit are vital in achieving a good quality of life. And we believe that yoga can be a great solution to this. The word “yoga” is first found in Hindu texts dating back to the 5th century B.C. The English translation of yoga means to yoke. In essence unite the body, mind and spirit. Yoga did originate in Hinduism and remains part of it today. However, times have changed and the majority of yoga practiced in Western culture today slightly resembles the original Hindu practice. There are a many types of modern yoga. Some of the most common classes offered at your neighborhood studio include Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Bikram and Iyengar. All have different purposes, but at their core they are based on the physical portion of yoga. The physical postures are known as asana and the breathing exercises called pranayama. The classes all vary in level of intensity from gentle to a hardcore workout. Allowing people of all ages and skill levels to participate. The word yoga usually coincides with the concept of meditation. There are many ways to meditate and most religions have some kind of form of it. In Western yoga classes the actual breath to movement is said to be meditative alone. At the end of the class there is also a chance to actually lie on the mat and meditate. This form of mediation is completely up to the participant whether that it is mindfulness, a prayer, or a quick power nap. Usually religion plays no role. Study after study proves that practicing yoga at least once week has an endless amount of health benefits. According to WebMD yoga creates strength, flexibility, corrects postural deviations, reduces stress, and improves heart health. Also WebMD states that mediation, also has a myriad of health benefits. Such as easing chronic pain, anxiety, stress, boosting immunity and mood. Yoga can do wonders for your physical health and beyond. It truly connects your mind, your body and your spirit, creating a better quality of life.

an Juan Capistrano-based business owners and residents Susan and Lou De Stefano started their full service catering company in 2014 with the slogan "One Call Does It All!" I can personally attest that the team at S & L Catering more than delivered on this promise for the South County Magazine "issue release" party last month held at Paradise Automotive Group.

The process couldn't have been simpler: we shared with Lou and Susan what we were looking for in terms of cuisine, the number of guests we expected and general information about the venue. Lou took it upon himself to visit the venue prior to the event so that he could determine the best presentation and flow for attendees. All our staff had to do the evening of the party was show up in time to greet guests and enjoy in the revelry. The artfully displayed dishes included specialty appetizers from several popular local eateries - including Prosciutto Scampi from Brio Tuscany Grille in Dana Point, Sun Dried Tomato & Goat Cheese Puff Pastry from The Vintage Steak House in San Juan Capistrano and yummy, Chips & Salsa from Ricardo's Place in San Juan Capistrano and perfectly-portioned "pie bites" from Marie Callender's. The couple, who started out in the local catering scene in 2011 (Lou served as catering manager for Ricardo's Place before branching out to launch S & L Catering) began their careers in an entirely different industry. Susan spent 25 years at TRW working on various programs training technicians for satellite launches at Cape

Stress and anxiety rob us of our time and connection to the people and things that really matter. Making money and paying the bills replace relaxation and meaningful time with our loved ones. Our children worry about their grades and pleasing not only their parents, but their teachers and friends. The truth is, I knew it in my head but wasn’t practicing it in my heart. It took a personal fall to activate all the good that was to come and put all that I had learned to work on every level.

Mastering Your Life: My Personal Experience by Mary McPherson There comes a time when we all ask ourselves what is going on in my life? Why has this happened, why can’t I focus, who am I? I believe the greater question should be...who am I becoming? Stress and anxiety rob us of our time and connection to the people and things that really matter. Making money and paying the bills replace relaxation and meaningful time with our loved ones. Our children worry about their grades and pleasing not only their parents, but their teachers and friends. Relationships start to suffer under the stress of making a living or getting good grades, and we lose touch with living a life of purpose, peace and connection. Several years ago I was one of the many people who lost it all in the crash of our economy. I felt lost to myself, even though I was well educated, successful and very capable, my life ceased to look like my own. I have been studying alternative practices such as meditation, herbal remedies, and motivational theory since the mid 80’s. Surely I knew how to heal myself from the monumental stressors of my new economic and personal position. In 1987, I was certified as a Motivational Coach with Robbins research, I also received certifications in Meditation at the Chopra Center and studied many forms of holistic health with master teachers all over the world. I knew it all right? The answer is no-I did not know how to find it in myself to recover. In a few short months, I went from a public name to wondering who I was. Questions I had never thought to ask myself suddenly crept to the surface. What is the point of it all? What am I doing here? But I found I was not alone in those uncertain times.

Today I am back, stronger and more centered and helping others to find themselves as I had to face the road of self-discovery. With technologies Like Brainwave Optimization™ that is designed to rebalance and harmonize brainwaves for greater cognitive performance and to reduce stress, I was able to see my way out of the position of hopelessness and into a life of Joy I never knew was possible. Today I am founder and director of Awoken Life Brainwave Optimization and Utopia Within Wellness Spa. We are also a teaching center with the goal of helping our clients learn the Art of Self Awareness. Using Advanced technology and ancient techniques we have helped hundreds of clients using many different modalities teaching them to Master their Life and reduce stress. Just a few of these modalities are Brainwave Optimization, Hypnotherapy, Motivational Life Coaching, Guided Meditation and Visualizations, The Bio Mat™ and the amazing Tibetan Singing Bowls. These processes are designed to relax the brain so it can heal itself. A life of Focus, Peace and Purpose - now that’s what I’m talking about. The Good News Replenishment of hormones to optimum physiological levels has been shown to alleviate symptoms of perimenopause, menopause and andropause. How do hormones fit into the aging process? Traditionally, we have been told that aging is inevitable and that progressive deterioration cannot be prevented. Fortunately, there is a revolution in science and medicine that now identifies aging as a disease. Mainstream medicine is now focusing on the prevention of the aging process rather than simply treating the symptoms of aging. One of the most important preventive therapies is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy for men and women.

On Perimenopause, Menopause and Andropause by J.A. Makena Marangu, M.D. or some, the years that encompass perimenopause, menopause, and andropause can mark a time of increased confidence, freedom and satisfaction. However, for many these years may be a time that poses challenges, particularly changes in energy levels and overall health. The good news is that there is an increased willingness to discuss these changes and to approach them in a positive and effective way.

F

Hormones are molecules that are manufactured in the endocrine glands, which include the adrenal glands, testes, ovaries, thyroid, pineal, and pituitary gland. As the body ages, the levels of hormones diminish. Specific hormone receptor sites in the cells tend to change with age and become less sensitive and more resistant to hormone stimulation, resulting in a decrease in cellular function, cellular repair, protein synthesis, and cell reproduction. Collectively, this results in the signs and symptoms of aging and can only be reversed by replacing our hormones to optimum levels. As the levels of hormones decline, so do our mental and physical capabilities. We lose energy, vitality, strength, and health. This deterioration results in osteoporosis, coronary artery disease, muscle loss, sleep disorders, depression, mood disorders, and decreased sociability in both women and men. By restoring these hormones to their appropriate levels, it is now possible to restore youthful zeal and energy, to strengthen our bodies and our minds. We can improve, even reverse many of the signs of aging that we have thought were unavoidable.

Unfortunately many of the hormones What is perimenopause? regularly prescribed are synthetic and Perimenopause is a highly individual experience. tical hormone replacement therapy. Your age-management physician can help you to achieve the quality of life you desire and deserve! How do hormones work to reverse symptoms of perimenopause, menopause and andropause? Hormones interact with each other to regulate the body’s functions. Your age-management physician will prescribe hormones in a perfect balance for your body. This is a case where One Size does not fit all. Your customized hormone program can eliminate the debilitating symptoms of perimenopause, menopause and andropause. Maintaining optimum levels of the following hormones can make a world of difference in your overall well-being and outlook: Estrogen and Progesterone – Estrogen has experienced a bumpy ride over the last four decades. Conclusions of studies such as the Women’s Health Initiative have left women scared and confused. But these studies have focused on the synthetic estrogen whereas bio-identical estrogen mimics exactly the estrogen produced by the body. Estrogen is essential for muscle tone, skin smoothness, hair texture, and sex drive. It may also help deter Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, and heart disease. Bioidentical progesterone should be regarded as the partner of estrogen. They balance each other and work synergistically to promote optimum female health. Progesterone boosts mood and well-being and helps stimulate bone growth and healthy heart function. DHEA – Studies have shown that this hormone has a beneficial effect on immune response, sex drive, metabolism, and emotional stability. DHEA’s effect on the immune system and its powerful antioxidant capabilities have demonstrated ageresisting potential. DHEA supports cognitive function, helps the body to cope with stress and protects against heart disease through its effects on the body fats and lipids. Testosterone – Although testosterone is the primary male hormone, women also benefit from its supplementation. Its levels decline with age in both men and women. At optimal levels, testosterone increases bone density and formation, enhances energy and sex drive, decreases body fat, increases muscle strength, lowers blood pressure and modulates cholesterol levels. Pregnenolone – Memory loss and lack of mental clarity can be some of the most frustrating aspects of aging. Studies show that pregnenolone may be beneficial against age-related cognitive decline. Melatonin – Melatonin regulates the circadian rhythm as well as the deep stages of sleep. Studies suggest that the immune system is stimulated during these restful periods. In the 1997 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, melatonin was extolled as the valuable antioxidant and a potential anti-cancer agent. Studies show that the melatonin can help to eliminate free radicals, induce youthful sleep patterns and possibly slow the aging process.

Thyroid – The metabolic hormone secreted by the thyroid gland regulates temperature, metabolism and cerebral function. Insufficient levels of thyroid result in fatigue, increased cholesterol levels, and an increased risk of coronary artery disease. Low thyroid can cause fatigue, constipation, dull hair, dry skin, and weak nails. Also, individuals suffering from low thyroid may feel constantly cold, particularly experiencing cold hands and feet. How to get started? Your age management physician will conduct an initial consultation that will include history and physical as well as laboratory work-up. Based on the results of these and other evaluations, your physician will formulate a hormone replacement program tailored just for you and your special needs. Your customized program will include prescriptions as well as recommendations for appropriate dietary supplements, exercise, and nutritional guidelines designed to restore your hormone and quality of aging to optimum levels. Your customized program will also include continued monitoring of hormone levels as well as symptoms.

Testimonials

The program is designed to help you feel, look, and live your best for years to come.

"In my 40s and 50s, I had a very stressful job in law enforcement. I suffered from migraines and my energy had started to wane. This was about a decade ago in an era when many physicians simply 'diagnosed" my symptoms as premenopause and menopause and sent me home with a prescription for synthetic hormones which only made my migraines worse. I met Dr. Marangu in 2002, who was clearly an innovator in the field of natural hormone replacement therapy - she put me on Bio-Identical hormones. It has literally changed my life - I haven't had a migraine in a decade. With Dr. Marangu's help, I lost 43 pounds in 4 months. My overall health has greatly improved, I feel better than I ever have and I'm blessed to be so healthy in my retirement and I have Dr. Marangu to thank for that." Sharon Ruiz, San Clemente "I knew my body was changing and didn’t know how to help myself. I was experiencing depression, catastrophic mood swings, crying for no apparent reason, mega hot flashes, and lack of libido, among many things. After seeing Dr. Marangu's advertisement, I made an appointment. Today, my body and life are back to normal and I have lost 38 lbs. Hallelujah! It is so amazing to experience life at 56 and feel on top of the world every day. Thank you Dr. Marangu so much for your care! - Kathy, Dana Point

With summer right around the corner, the atmosphere at our May Issue Release event was particularly festive in the Paradise Automotive Group showroom where guests noshed on delicious appetizers and desserts provided by the San Juan Capistranobased S & L Catering. SOUTH COUNTY DINING & ENTERTAINMENT cious - Italian food that tastes home-made! There were so many things to choose from, but I opted to get the Farfalle al Salmone (bow tie pasta with smoked salmon tossed in a cream and tomato sauce with a touch of vodka). It was so creamy, rich, and delicious! I highly recommend Casanova Ristorante and would love to visit again." David J. of Dana Point agrees with Pegah's assessment and adds "This place probably has the best Italian food in Orange County. It also has that east coast or European feel of service. These guys are professionals. Try the godfather tortellini and the calamari. Overall great food and service."

Casanova Ristorante and Cocktail Lounge Serving up some of the best Italian dishes this side of Venice by Ann Laurence

If you’re in the mood for delicious, authentic Italian fare served in a romantic atmosphere where the owners and staff make guests feel as welcome as a member of the family, experience Casanova Ristorante. Literally everything I’ve tried on the menu here has been nothing short of superb. The service is excellent – attentive and unobtrusive – the ambiance is warm and friendly and its popular cocktail lounge featuring an extensive, specially selected wine list (and full bar) has a loyal following among locals and visitors alike. And I'm not alone - judging from the scores of positive Yelp reviews: Pegah Y. of Washington D.C. gave her experience "5 BIG STARS! Casanova Ristorante is amazing! The food was deli-

Literally everything I’ve tried on the menu here has been nothing short of superb. The service is excellent – attentive and unobtrusive – the ambiance is warm and friendly.

Start with the Burrata Cheese platter which combines melt-in-your-mouth burrata with thin slices of Prosciutto di Parma, sliced tomatoes, arugula, olive oil and pepper. Another popular pick is the antipasto misto made up of a selection of cured meats and complementary cheeses or the Cozze Vongole alla Siciliana which arrives as fresh mussels and clams sauteed in white wine and garlic and a spicy marinara sauce. Popular entrees include the “Pink Lady Fettuccine” made with chicken and sundried tomatoes tossed in a creamy Alfredo sauce and the Rigatoni Mama Rosa which combines Italian sausage and mushrooms in a tomato sauce with a touch of cream.

A seafood aficionado? Options abound – ranging from the Linguini Vongole Veraci (long, flat pasta with baby Manila clams sautéed in a white wine sauce) and Farfalle al Salmone (bowtie pasta with smoked salmon tossed in a cream and tomato sauce with a touch of vodka) to the Linguini alla Pescatora (long, flat pasta with fresh fish of the day, shrimp, calamari, mussels and clams in a light tomato sauce. Portions are generous, but if you’ve saved room for a little something sweet … try the crème brulee with its perfectly carmelized top or the homemade tiramisu, a traditional favorite.

Casanova Ristorante is located at 33585 Del Obispo St. in Dana Point (at the corner of Stonehill). For reservations, call 949.496.0992 or visit www.casanovaristorante.com JUNE 2015

Exposing Taboos by Beverly Blake and Tom Scott xploring taboo subjects is a natural function of theatre and when handled with delicacy can both raise the audiences’ consciousness and level of understanding. Theatre has been exposing taboos from the very beginning. The early Greek play Oedipus Rex defined what we now refer to as the Oedipus complex which was a very taboo subject matter. In Shakespeare’s day incest was a topical taboo which was exposed in Macbeth.

JUNE 2015

In the Victorian era women’s sexuality was a taboo subject but reality was that they had the same needs as women of today. Because there was no socially acceptable way for them to discuss their needs a medical industry was created. Doctors were approached by married couples to treat the wife for what was called hysteria. The doctor would digitally manipulate the woman to a point where she reached what was called a paroxysm. Both terms, hysteria and paroxysm were euphemisms that were used to tiptoe around the real words which were taboo in that society. Eventually technology moved in to reduce the doctor’s physical effort with the introduction of the electric vibrator. While that was an immediate solution for the doctor, it took decades for the communication of ones needs to be an acceptable conversation. We invite you to be entertained by the exposure of this taboo subject in the Camino Real Playhouse presentation of In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play. This play is intended for mature adult audiences.
