In the cover story of the last issue of South County Magazine, we inadvertently identified Anthony Holguin of Raymond Photography as the photographer of all of the images used to illustrate the cover feature. ADVERTISER TESTIMONIALS "I keep hearing that print media is going away, but I can't find any evidence of that based on my experience in advertising with South County Magazine. For my business, it's been phenomenal - every time the magazine goes out, I consistently receive calls that have resulted in a steady stream of new clients. I couldn't be happier with my placement and encourage other local business owners looking for avenues to increase their customer base to look no further than South County Magazine." Candice Lopez, owner, Call in the Crew "We have been involved with South County Magazine since its first edition in January 2011. Monaco Jewelers was featured as the cover of the inaugural issue and we are still receiving positive feedback from customers - new and existing - who remember seeing our showcase. Additionally, we are very happy with our advertising relationship with South County Magazine and look forward many years of mutual success and continued growth" - Ron Pashaian, Monaco Jewelers, San Juan Capistrano "I've been using media advertising for 5 years. I'm used to having to wait a few months for any phone calls when I start in a new publication. I was so pleasantly surprised when my phone started ringing from the very FIRST ad that I placed with South County Magazine. Jody really has done a great job for me." - Stephanie Frisch, Insurance 101 Hidden in a historic district, I wondered how anyone would find us. Of course, there's nothing like word-of-mouth, but when we decided to advertise, I felt that South County Magazine was a good fit since it highlights all the best things to see and do in the OC. Sure enough, we began hearing from our visitors that they saw us in the magazine and decided to check out our zoo. South County Magazine is certainly something to crow about!" - Carolyn Franks, owner ZOOMARS Petting Zoo, San Juan Capistrano "Simply put, advertising in South County Magazine works. My participation has resulted in new customers and the process couldn't have been easier. Not only did the magazine offer design services at no charge, they created a great ad without needing much input from me because they took the time to really understand my business. The resulting ad does a great job of getting my 'message' out - I'm very pleased." - Betty Darroch, Mission Viejo Wigs, Mission Viejo "What a great magazine!!!!! With all the advertising I have done for Salon Bamboo over the last seven years, I love the response I have gotten from South County Magazine. Whether you are a new business or existing ... It's great when your customers notice your advertising!" - Jamie Springer, Owner of Salon Bamboo and Del Mar Beauty Supply, San Clemente “I really appreciate the help and support offered by Jody and her staff. Together we came up with not only a successful ad and editorial, but have generated enough business to increase our staff size. In the current state of the economy, it’s one thing to survive but thanks to South County Magazine we are thriving.” - Candice Loren, C. Loren Studios, Dana Point “I know when South County Magazine goes out into circulation because our phone starts ringing. We love it!” - Scott E. West, D.D.S.

“The same afternoon the publication went out into circulation, I received a call and signed on a new customer. The magazine looks great and allows me to target specific areas that we haven’t had much exposure into previously. We look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with South County Magazine.” – Mike Dougherty, Pacific Water Solutions, San Clemente "My advertising placement in South County Magazine has already made a difference in my business. I am able to reach a large number of potential clients. The editorial opportunity was a great way to introduce The Worth Collection to my target audience in a way that allowed me to share my 'story' and showcase my services." - Lesley Boyer, The Worth Collection, San Clemente JULY / AUGUST 2012

Independence Bank Commitment to community and personalized business banking by Jody Robinson • photography by Lana Farfan, Caught in the Moment Photography true “community bank," Independence Bank is everything you'd expect from a local financial institution with roots in the city it serves. The members of its friendly, dedicated staff are familiar faces at virtually every community-oriented event, its banking customers are reflective of the communities served by each of its four Orange County branches: The first branch and the corporate offices opened in Newport Beach in 2004. In early 2006, the South County Regional Office was opened in San Juan Capistrano. Next came the Fountain Valley branch and, November 2011, the Tustin office opened its doors.

“Independence Bank is a community bank that offers its customers a “small” bank experience coupled with the latest in technology,” says C. Lawrence "Larry" Thomas, first vice president and South County Regional Manager. "Most of our competitors are large banks that offer their customers a different experience. "The bank serves individuals and families as well as businesses. Among our team are experienced and knowledgeable business bankers. While the bank does not specialize in certain industries, we do have considerable experience with (and some special programs for)

certain industries such as medical/dental and small to medium-sized escrow companies." As is true of each of the Independence Bank branches, the San Juan Capistrano office shares the company culture of service - both to its customers and to the communities they serve. "We are fortunate to have great people at every level in the bank who are all dedicated to make our customer’s experience pleasant and successful," says Larry. "We are very involved in our communities through local chambers of commerce, service clubs such as Kiwanis and Rotary, and local organizations such as the Boys and Girls Clubs. Additionally, the bank offers a wide range of deposit and lending products for individuals, families and businesses." Toward that end, Independence Bank's online banking services and mobile banking adds the technical innovation that today’s customers demand. chine in the United States and withdraw cash. If there is a charge, we automatically reimburse it. If a customer needs a Notary Public, come to any branch and the service is free. "All employees of Independence Bank are dedicated to adding value to our community, our customer relationships and our shareholders. We will accomplish this by striving for perfection in all that we do, each and every day." From the accolades of its customers and awards received, it's evident that city leaders and business customers have recognized the efforts of the Independence Bank team in our community: Independence Bank was selected as “Business of the Year” in 2008 by the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce and Larry Thomas was selected as “Business Leader of the Year” in 2010 by the Mayor of the City of San Juan Capistrano. “When we opened our business in San Juan Capistrano, we wanted to work with a local bank that truly cares about their customers and local businesses," says John Gillotti, owner of Mission Grill in San Juan Capistrano. "Our bank is great to us and the community they serve. It makes a huge difference for us to have a banking partner like Independence Bank.” Sherry Behzadi, owner of Charisma Beauty Supply & Salon in San Juan Capistrano, agrees with John's assessment and adds "Independence Bank offers me great customer service and convenience. They know me, and I'm not just a number like with other banks. My banker is truly connected with my business and with my community. That's why I bank with Independence Bank." “The bank is profitable, well capitalized and well positioned to bring our excellence in customer service and innovative products and technology to individuals, families and businesses in expanded areas in Orange County and beyond,” says Larry.

Healthy Eating! BBQ Grill Cleaning Services by Jody Robinson To be honest, until Andre, owner of the South County-based BBQ Grill Cleaning Services approached me about possibly participating in the magazine, I'd never really given much thought to the cleaning of our home barbecue. But after hearing about the common accumulation of food particles that can contribute to making our otherwise delicious grilled dishes carcinogenic (can-

cer causing) and the insects, mice and other rodents who take up residence underneath grills where crumbs are plentiful, you can bet we'll be utilizing his services.

"A clean grill is a healthy grill," says Andre Vigel, who has been specializing in keeping grills sparkling for over a decade. "It is our mission to clean and restore barbecue grills in order to ensure safe barbecuing and the best tasting food directly from the grill." Scores of happy South County home grilling enthusiasts attest to the difference cooking on a clean grill can really make. And for my part, with two young children, I'm particularly concerned with the health aspects addressed by Andre's expertise. AFTER

"It doesn’t make sense to clean with products that bring toxins to the grill I'm supposed to be making clean, which is why all of the cleaning products I use are 100% nontoxic and biodegradeable," says Andre. "I believe not only in a clean grill, but also in a healthy environment, and it shows with every job the company completes."

“RESIDENT” RESTAURANT REVIEW by Dennis Murphy the new Mission Grill in San Juan Capistrano with my family, I couldn’t help but think it a lucky sign to hear an obscure Bob Marley song playing in the background. The music matched the laid-back vibe and inviting menu which featured many options - from authentic Mexican fare to pastrami sandwiches, custom burgers, soups and salads. A moment of nostalgia came over me when I noticed a number of bottled specialty sodas with names like “Bubble Up,” “Route 66” Root Beer and “Sioux City Sarsaparilla,” - any of which sound as though they'd be perfectly paired with the Mission Grill's Santa Cruz Beach Burger with caramelized onions.

Owner John Gillotti with wife Christina and daughters Eliana and Giovana here is nothing I like better than trying new restaurants in South County, particularly when the menu offers something for everyone. On a recent visit to

On this beautiful So Cal day, our choices called for traditional Tacos and Burritos in addition to Grilled Veggie Salads (Think grilled, roasted peppers and mushrooms draped over Romaine lettuce then tossed with an Italian Vinaigrette and served with a side of tasty Feta and Hummus). When it came to burritos, “Miguel’s Shrimp Burrito ($6.95) won the

day and arrives filled with grilled shrimp, rice, cabbage, pico de gallo and salsa verde. For kids 10 and under who need a little comfort food before seeing a movie or taking a train ride, Diego’s Chicken Strips with fries or the reliable mac ‘n cheese should do the trick. Located directly across from the Mission San Juan, the Mission Grill's most distinctive feature is an expansive outdoor patio perfect for organized gatherings and celebrations or a quick lunch on the go. Picture this: Kicking back under a canopy of red umbrellas, eating flavorful (and very reasonably priced) entrees while listening to Jimmy Buffet’s “Boat Drinks." (Also want to mention a super clean, easily accessible, ADAapproved restroom - typically super elusive when dining al fresco). We ended our delicious mid-afternoon outing with talk of a return trip already in the works! A longtime San Clemente resident, Dennis Murphy counts among his favorite pastimes exploring the many diverse culinary destinations unique to South County.

Personal Service, Timeless Style How South County local Lesley Boyer redefines the shopping experience by Betsy Sanz understand that women were entrepreneurial, and that a beautiful, versatile and quality wardrobe that fits a woman perfectly is the result of a keen eye and personal service. Fast forward thirty years or so and Lesley, a schoolteacher, found herself a single mother staring down the looming prospect of college tuition for her two sons, without the money to pay for it. She came across a company doing exactly what her mother had taken advantage of – a high-end clothing line, represented by personal shoppers and by appointment only. Lesley knew that she could be that representative (it was, after all, what she had grown up around) and send her kids to school with the extra income. A couple of years later, Lesley was acknowledged as one of that company’s top twenty representatives in the country, and she had a new career on her hands. Today, Lesley maintains a dedicated clientele on behalf of whom she keeps that keen eye out for the perfect garments made by Worth New York, a superior line of forward designs made of custom fabrics, produced to last. For two weeks at the beginning of every season, Lesley books personal appointments, works with the collection in her home to find the right style and fit for each client, and delivers the clothes personally when orders arrive.

esley Boyer’s mother was ahead of her time. While most of her friends were homemaking in 1950s Long Beach, she was a real estate maven and an entrepreneur. She was also a woman of impeccable style. At the time, the trunk show method of shopping was becoming popular. Sales associates representing exclusive clothing lines would book private appointments in their homes. There, ladies would choose the latest fashions to be delivered to them personally. The representatives kept Lesley’s mother at the height of fashion, as Lesley looked on. Students here range in age from young adults to seniors - including those looking for something different for people who have completed physical therapy and are easing back into their workout regimens. The Importance of Preventive Dental Care When it comes to early diagnosis and treatment of common dental diseases, an ounce of prevention is worth far more than a pound of cure

by Robert K. Faber, DDS

“D

on’t wait ‘til it hurts.” These words were the maxim for preventive dentistry, a concept popularized in the 70’s that now is the standard of dental care in the 21st century. Dental cavities and periodontal disease are two of the most common ailments affecting people of all ages. Dental cavities and periodontal disease are generally painless until the condition(s) have progressed to the point that the nec-

essary treatment is far more complex (and costly!) than it would have been if regular, routine exams and proper dental care were put into practice. Additionally, the necessary treatment to address more advanced cases often renders a compromised long-term prognosis for the tooth/teeth affected by the disease. Moreover, there are many scientific studies that have linked dental diseases to an individual's increased risk for strokes, heart attacks and other serious events that truly can compromise a person’s lifespan and/or quality of life. Early diagnosis and treatment is in the best interest of every individual's oral health, systemic health and economic health.

Today, many Orange County residents are experiencing economic challenges that have been unprecedented in most of our lifetimes. Watching savings dwindle, losing insurance benefits or losing one’s job understandably makes you want to tighten your belt. Unfortunately, dental diseases like cavities, and periodontal/gum disease continue to progress with no regard to your economic situation. If your goal is to maintain a healthy body and save your teeth for the enjoyment of eating the foods you love - as well as minimizing the cost of staying healthy, early diagnosis and regular preventive care is the obvious answer.

Robert K. Faber and his team of dental care professionals can help you with the financial aspects of receiving the care you need. Connect with him by calling (949) 493-3376 or visit www.capistranodentist.com. His offices are located at 31921 Camino Capistrano • Suite 21 in San Juan Capistrano

And, left untreated, they can increase your chances of a heart attack or stroke. Your doctor may have recommended a medical device called the CPAP mask. The CPAP mask is worn over your nose and mouth much like a pilot's oxygen mask. The air pressure from the mask opens the airway to allow the patient to receive an adequate amount of oxygen to keep the heart functioning normally throughout the night and to help the brain receive enough oxygen.

Understanding Sleep Apnea

Maybe you have already tried the CPAP, and as much as you try, it just doesn't result in a good night's sleep for you. Perhaps you have boxed it up and put it away in the closet thinking that one day you'll try again - because you know you have to do something - but what?

The “Turning 65” Epidemic by Stephanie Frisch It almost seems to be an “epidemic” - people telling me when we first sit down; “I can’t believe I’m 65, I don’t feel that old." I’m not too concerned when people have enough retirement income to help subsidize their “meager” social security checks for the next 20 or so years. I’m even not concerned when they tell me they have NO idea how Medicare works and that they didn’t know about late enrollment penalties, etc.; because I can help with that. But I get a sinking feeling when I hear statements like “I don’t know what I’m going to do, I can’t survive on my Social Security alone and when my husband was alive, he took care of this sort of stuff.” I also see a lot of single women “aging in” that have been divorced for 20-something years. These are the free-spirited women who enjoyed their teenage years during the early 60’s and raised their kids during the 70’s. At the time when they divorced, they were in their 40’s and the world was theirs! Their kids were grown, they had a job, they felt self-sufficient and in control of their lives. That picture has often changed drastically by the time I meet with them. Most feel defeated and hopeless and full of regret for their lack of planning and poor choices. I can help show them some options of low income subsidies that the government provides, but with 10,000 people aging into Medicare every day, those subsidies aren’t going make it to everyone that needs them. Medicare isn’t free, you pay a premium for your Part B and that amount varies year to year. Medicare A & B doesn’t cover everything, there are deductibles, co-insurance and benefit limits. Medicare doesn’t cover prescription drugs. You must provide yourself with a drug plan. If you’re in a skilled nursing facility over 100 days, it’s your financial responsibility. If you didn’t know any of this, then you owe it to yourself to set up a time to talk to a professional so you have an idea of what’s ahead of you. Trust me - we’ll all be 65 before we know it.

This San Juan Capistrano hot spot is known for having some of the most skilled stylists around. Vincent Newlan, owner, was inspired to open this shop after working in Beverly Hills for over 30 years. He’s been kind enough to take his talent our way and share it with our locks for over eight years now. Vincent Michael Salon has become so popular by word of mouth that plans to expand to another location are well underway for this fall!

Be advised: this isn’t your average salon. From the moment you walk in the door, it’s clear they want to meet you, get to know you, and help create a new look for you that you never even knew you could pull off! While they specialize in creative cut and colors, as well as Brazilian Blowouts and Keratin treatments, everything they do is practically an art. You’ll definitely want to indulge yourself in their incredible massage therapy, facial services, or even a relaxing mani-pedi combo. One thing’s for sure, you will not feel this fabulous from any other salon. It doesn’t matter who you are, each client is treated like their only client. s a girl who likes to shop, I’m reluctant to write this editorial feature and introduce South County’s fashion forward females to what I believe has been one of Laguna Niguel’s best-kept retail secrets for the past six months.

But after meeting the young couple who own and operate Collective Habit, I feel compelled to share their story … even at the expense of clueing the rest of the community into the array of great designer blouses, dresses, skirts, jeans and accessories they’ll find here - without the high price tags they’d typically find in a boutique shopping experience.

A consignment/exchange boutique, Collective Habit carries new and gently worn clothing and accessories for women – most bearing major brand names at a fraction of their original price.

The clothing Mitch and Ashley select (from customers who want to sell their items or those who would prefer to take store credit) are generally from within the last fashion season or two or classic, timeless pieces designed to enhance virtually any ensemble currently residing in your closet. The way it works is simple: Make an appointment to bring in your gently worn clothing or accessories and for the items Mitch and Ashley choose, they will give you the option of 30% of the price they believe they will be able to sell the item for in cash or 50% in store credit. I had a dress in my closet with the tags still attached that (for nearly a year) I kept thinking I was going to lose enough weight to wear. When I got over that silly notion, I brought it in to Collective Habit, took advantage of the 50% store credit and walked out with a beautiful new dress with tags attached that obviously came from someone with a similarmindset.

The store’s owners, Mitch and Ashley O’Leary are as personable and charming as can be (Ashley’s grandmother and the couple’s young children can often be found keeping their parents company in this true “family” business). There’s no high-pressure sales experience here. In fact, it feels more like you’re shopping in a friend’s closet. One look at the way ensembles are put together on display and it’s evident that Ashley has an eye for fashion, but it is her “huge heart and ability to make friends with everyone,” that

Dylan Del Prado, Tri4Epilepsy.com by Jody Robinson oy, the next time I need to drum up the motivation to achieve a goal, I just need to remember meeting Dylan Del Prado and witnessing what this remarkable young man has been able to accomplish in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

B

A Dana Point native, Dylan, 18, was diagnosed with epilepsy eight years ago. He has what his mom, Kris, calls “pretty severe” grand mal seizures (charaterized by unconsciousness, convulsions and muscle rigidity). Given his diagnosis, the last thing I’d have expected Dylan to list among his recent achievements is completing a triathlon – a multi-sport event (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run) involving tremendous physical strength and endurance. “I started doing triathlons for fun in the Summer of 2011,” says the recent Dana Hills High School graduate. “After the third race, I discovered I could use my participation in these events to help raise awareness about epilepsy..” When Dylan expressed an interest in participating in triathlons, his family (Kris, Dad Randy and sister Ryann, 21) was understandably worried that he could have a seizure while running, riding the bike or even more frightening, out in the water. “I can feel it coming on, so when I know it’s about to happen, I can call for help or get myself over to a safe spot,” says Dylan, who was able to get to the safety boat before a seizure during a recent event. During another triathlon, Dylan had a seizure while cycling. Once he regained consciousness, Dylan opted to continue – it was slow going, but he finished. “After I raced after my first half Ironman, it became my goal to get out there and show people that even with epilepsy that you can do stuff. I want to raise awareness so people understand what epilepsy is and what it isn’t.” Dylan initially participated in the triathlons without the appropriate gear (he didn’t have the money to purchase a good bike, full wetsuit or even new running shoes that most of his counterparts in the competition were sporting), but he didn’t let that stop him. It wasn’t long before his courage and determination caught the eye of the “powers-that-be” at the HITS Triathlon Series and sponsors like Race Day Transport, which ships participants’ bikes and gear to the event. He has since been outfitted with some clothes and a new bike (he retired the old BMX bike he had been racing on). Today, Dylan is hoping to gain additional sponsorship to raise the funds necessary to continue to participate in triathlons across the country and continue to raise awareness about epilepsy.

Dr. Roth's Patient 1. How did you perfect the laser BEFORE AFTER 6 MONTHS treatment for fungal nails? Ivar Roth, DPM: After performing thousands of laser fungal toenail treatments, I developed and refined a proprietary protocol coupled with the newest second generation FDA approved laser. The new laser with its digital readouts allows me to tell precisely how much energy is required to kill the fungus. With this information, I calculate a specific customized laser treatment tailored to each patient. This patient specific treatment means that no two patients are given the same laser treatment. In addition, I invented a new way to get rid of the fungal infection in the toenails. Before your laser treatment, I will perform Maximum Nail Reduction (MNR) which removes at least 80% f your fungus in a single office visit. This exclusive protocol is so effective that I applied for a patent and it is currently only available at my office. The initial treatment fee includes a second treatment session in order to ensure your success.

Dr. Roth's Patient 2) What is the cost for laser toenail treatment? IR: The treatments are broken down into two easy to understand components. The first is the examination and nail treatment which may be covered by insurance. The second part is the actual laser treatment which is not covered. A one-time examination fee of $500 is charged during the first session which covers both the fee for the initial examination as well as the follow-up office visit. There is a separate laser fee of $70 for each toe which is also paid upfront and covers two laser treatments. For example, treating one toe would be $570; however if all ten toenails are treated, the charge would be $1200. For severe infections, a third laser treatment may be necessary. Exclusive anti-fungal products are sold separately. You are not forced to treat all your nails as may be mandatory at other offices. BEFORE

AFTER 1 YEAR

Dr. Roth's Patient 3) Are there any other problems associated with fungal toenail infections? IR: Dry, scaly skin, cracked heels or thick calluses are common problems directly associated with infected toe nails. Dr. Roth has developed a unique bedtime skin treatment regimen to eliminate any fungus on your skin while you comfortably sleep. Simply apply Dr. Roth's specially formulated "Bedtime Skin Rejuvenation" gel and foot wrap before you climb into bed. Results will knock your socks off! BEFORE

Capistrano Children’s Dentistry

by Jody Robinson by Jody Robinson From the moment you enter Capistrano Children’s Dentistry, you know this is not your typical dental office.

“I know it may sound hard to believe, but I’ve probably heard over a 1,000 times from parents about how their kids get excited to come see us,” says Dr. Lee. “That is the best compliment we can ever receive as dentists. If the kids enjoy coming to see us, then they’ll grow up to be adults who seek out regular dental care, and that is our primary goal.”

Everything here is tailored for kids -from the cheerful murals throughout the office to the TV’s on the ceilings (children watch movies during their visit!). There are also video games, books and toys in the waiting room to keep kids and their siblings entertained. They even offer different flavors of toothpaste (birthday cake, chocolate and bubblegum to name a few) and have a “No Cavity Club” where kids can win prizes for staying cavity free.

The practice, which started in Irvine in the mid-80s, expanded to San Juan Capistrano in 2011 to meet the needs of a growing number of South Orange County families who were making the long drive to Irvine to see Drs. Lee and Chand.

Dr. Anna Chand and Dr. Clara Lee have created a place where kids feel excited about visiting the dentist. “My kids (ages 4 and 5) race to the door of Capistrano Children’s Dentistry and then at the end of their appointments, I have to drag them away. There is no better testament to the high quality care that they receive here.”

“From my own experience, there is no doubt that the dentists and the staff at Capistrano Children’s Dentistry, want to develop lasting and rewarding relationships with the families they serve.” “Our motto is to treat others as you would like to be treated,” says Dr. Chand. “If a patient or parent has any questions or concerns, we want them to feel like we’re trusted friends they can always reach by phone. We try to respect our busy parents’ schedules by seeing patients on time and we try to communicate effectively so that our parents can make wise and informed decisions for their child. In short, we want to provide high quality dentistry and customer service in a warm and friendly environment for our families.”

Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu Dana Point by Jody Robinson

elf development. Discipline. Self defense. Character development. These are all traits any parent would want to instill in their children and the main reasons why my husband and I chose to enroll our five-year-old son in Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu in Dana Point.

S

Open since December 2009 in the Blue Lantern Plaza (at the corner of PCH and Blue Lantern), the Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu studio specializes in self defense and Brazilian Jiu-JItsu for men, women and children of all ages.

In the few short months since our son started the program, he has truly thrived in the encouraging, fun atmosphere and in interacting with his fellow students and the instructors. What is particularly nice for the class of mostly 4 – 6 year olds is that there are three “coaches” on the mat throughout the 50minute class, so all the students receive individualized, personal attention. All of the instructors I’ve witnessed are incredibly patient, supportive and seem to have an affinity for teaching their art to children. “I attribute the success of the business to date to our people,” says Flavio Almeida, executive director, Gracie Barra (GB) Association and professor, GB Dana Point and GB San Clemente. “Gracie Barra has been an amazing magnet, attracting good people. From the staff to the students, every individual has been very committed to the team and their training, as well as the growth of the school.” Almeida, who has been practicing Jiu-Jitsu his entire life, says Gracie Barra has “transformed me and my family in so many ways and we

are really motivated to expose as many people in our community to the amazing benefits of the practice – from improved confidence, strength and coordination to personal discipline.” “We are dedicated to teaching martial arts at its prime form providing the best training experience possible,” he says. “All of our instructors undergo the ‘Gracie Barra Instructors Certification Program ‘ – an intense training to review and enhance their teaching skills and methodology. Our classes are run using curriculums and teaching methods developed by our founder Carlos Gracie Jr. and, most importantly, we have our students goals in mind all the time. Jiu-Jtsu is a tool for each team member to discover his or her own strengths and grow from their weaknesses and we are here to help them.” In terms of future growth, Almeida says he plans to expand the schedule of offerings to include cardio classes for men and women based on basic self-defense and martial arts. “This class will be a variation of what is commonly known as cardio kickboxing,” he says. “This summer, we will also add a Mixed Martial Arts Program with the goal of providing our advanced students with training so they can continue to develop their self defense skills.” Almeida adds that “martial arts training is not what most people think about when considering a new hobby.” “We pride ourselves of teaching Jiu-Jitsu for everyone,” he adds. “Martial arts can become a lifestyle that will improve your overall wellbeing as well that of your entire family.”
